MESSAGE FROM amfAR

Welcome to the third annual amfAR Palm Beach gala.

We are deeply indebted to James and Lisa Cohen for graciously hosting us this evening at their beautiful home. And we are immensely grateful to you for joining us in support of amfAR’s efforts to bring the global HIV/AIDS epidemic to an end.

As we work to achieve that goal, this event serves to remind us that HIV remains a serious public health threat in the U.S. and around the world. On average, AIDS claims a life every minute. The state of Florida consistently has one of the highest infection rates in the nation, with close to 5,000 new HIV diagnoses in 2022 alone.

amfAR has contributed significantly to the fight against AIDS in Florida, awarding more than 100 grants in support of a range of projects over the past 35 years. Our recent round of grants in September 2023, for example, included an award of $480,000 to Dr. James Termini at the University of Miami for a potentially groundbreaking project that aims to boost the potency of powerful antibodies in an effort to cure HIV.

For the past 15 years, amfAR’s sights have been firmly set on a cure, and all proceeds from the gala will support the work of leading scientists around the world who are similarly dedicated to achieving that goal. Your generous support this evening enables us to advance this lifesaving work and inch closer to a cure for all 39 million people living with HIV.

With gratitude,

PIPERHEIDSIECK

CHAMPAGNE BRUT

PIPERHEIDSIECK CHAMPAGNE CUVÉE BRUT

Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut is an emblematic multi-vintage champagne, signature cuvée of the House. Fresh, elegant, and balanced, with a blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Meunier, and 20% Chardonnay, the wine reveals delicate notes of pear, citrus, and orange blossom. On the palate, it offers aromas of toasted bread, fresh almonds, and mint.

WINE

CHÂTEAU MALARTICLAGRAVIÈRE BORDEAUX GRAND CRU RED BORDEAUX GRAND CRU RED

The 2016 Malartic-Lagravière has a wonderful bouquet of perfumes. The fresh, harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. With just the right amount of salinity, the dense and silky mouthfeel is giving full expression to a long, enveloping tannic structure. The richness of flavors, red and black fruit, a hint of spice, and mocha-chocolate, becoming slightly smoky, combined with a superb balance, offers a sensation of exceptional freshness. A superb and elegant wine to drink now or to keep in the cellar.

CHÂTEAU MALARTICLAGRAVIÈRE BORDEAUX GRAND CRU WHITE BORDEAUX GRAND CRU WHITE

The Malartic-Lagravière white 2019 is a superb example of the great aging whites that the estate has been producing for years, with a touch of roundness due to the sunny vintage, which gives it charm and great elegance.

The nose is very expressive with floral notes and a very elegant hint of iodine. On the palate, the attack is lively and ample; the wine exhibits a beautiful body that is both rich and finely delicate. It develops superbly in the mouth with well-defined aromas of peaches, pears, and some subtly integrated vanilla notes, bringing a beautiful roundness. It is a very complete and intense wine, exuding a lot of charm and subtlety with a long saline finish.

RUMOR CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ RUMOR CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ

This vintage is elegant and light—with a nose of white flowers and citrus. After aeration, the notes evolve to peach and pomelo. The palate is clean and unfolds elegantly to a smooth finish, leaving citrus notes.

Barry Gibb rates among the most prolific, influential and acclaimed musicians ever to have lived. Guinness World Records and Billboard list him alongside only Paul McCartney as one of the two most successful popular songwriters of all time. As a member of the Bee Gees with his brothers Robin and Maurice, the trio sold over 220 million records, while writing 21 different songs to top the US or UK charts.

Born on the Isle of Man in the UK in 1946, Barry is a nine-time GRAMMY Award® winner and an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. When Wayne Newton covered the 18-year-old Barry’s “They’ll Never Know” in 1964, he became the first of hundreds of American artists to record Gibbwritten songs: everyone from Al Green, the Foo Fighters, Snoop Dogg, and Elvis Presley to Destiny’s Child.

The Bee Gees exploded internationally in 1967 with early classics like “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” and “Words.” What could have qualified as an entire career turned out to be merely a warmup for Barry and his brothers’ culturedefining, empirical phase a decade later. With late 70s tracks like “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “How Deep Is Your Love,” the Bee Gees combined harmony and melody with the rarest of abilities to move the heart as well as the feet.

Barry was also unafraid to give away songs most performers wouldn’t dare part with, be it Frankie Valli’s “Grease” or younger brother Andy’s “I Just Want to Be Your Everything.” Both were solo compositions, both became US number ones. The hits continued in the 80s and 90s, as well as entire albums of platinum-coated, Barrycrafted songs for the likes of Barbra Streisand (“Woman in Love”), Dionne Warwick (“Heartbreaker”), Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton (“Islands in the Stream”), and Diana Ross (“Chain Reaction”).

From equaling the Beatles’ six consecutive US number one singles, to being the only songwriters to have five songs simultaneously in the US top 10, the music of Sir Barry Gibb and his brothers is—and forever will be—etched into the very fabric of American life.

DIONNE WARWICK

AWARD OF COURAGE HONOREE OF COURAGE HONOREE

Dionne Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest US hitmakers charting on Billboard’s Hot 100 between 1955–1999. She is the second most-charted female vocalist during the rock era and one of the most charted vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Hot 100 between 1962–1998 (12 Top 10s) and 80 singles in total—either solo or collaboratively—making the Hot 100, R&B, and/or

Adult Contemporary charts. Dionne ranks #74 on the Billboard Hot 100’s “Greatest Artists of All Time.”

During her career, Warwick sold more than 100 million records worldwide and she has won many awards, including six GRAMMYs. She has been inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the GRAMMY Hall of Fame, the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and the Apollo Theater Walk of Fame. In 2019 she won the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award. Three of her songs—“Walk On By,” “Alfie,” and “Don’t Make Me Over”—have been inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. Warwick received a Kennedy Center Honor in December 2023.

A tireless advocate, Warwick served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. In using music to support her activism, Warwick performed in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World.” She also made recording history with Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder with “That’s What Friends Are For,” a number-one hit from 1985 and the first recording dedicated to raising awareness for AIDS. The single raised millions of dollars as a benefit for amfAR.

Currently, Warwick is working on a gospel album, the forthcoming Songs of Inspiration. The first single, “Peace Like a River,” was a duet with Dolly Parton. Dolly wrote the song and Dionne’s son/manager/producer Damon Elliott produced the single and co-directed the video. The second and current single from the album is a duet with Damon entitled “I Kneel.” Damon, who is a GRAMMY winner and Oscar nominee, wrote and produced it. The documentary, Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over, is currently streaming on HBO Max. Dionne has been dubbed the Queen of Twitter (now X) for her outspoken comments on social media, the basis for a recurring Saturday Night Live parody skit. Dionne continues to tour nationwide.

NANCY LORENZ

Cieli e Terra, 2023 Gold, pigment, jute on wood panel

50 in. x 40 in. / 127 cm. x 101.6 cm.

Nancy Lorenz (American, b. 1962) is a visual artist and John Simon Guggenheim Fellow who lives and works in New York City. She spent a graduate year in Rome in 1987 at the Tyler School of Art with a studio just blocks from the Piazza del Popolo.

Her works are a blur between typical craft practices and traditions of sculpture and painting. For Lorenz, who was trained in printmaking and painting, the most formative and enlightening experience for her artistic practice was the five years she spent in Tokyo. She says: “I became enamored with Asian crafts, and how a teacup can be just as revered as a painting.” Following this trip, Lorenz would begin working with the materials and techniques that would come to identify her career: mother-ofpearl inlay, gold and silver leaf, lacquer, and water gilding. Her style is characterized by its references to expressionistic abstraction, use of decorative pattern, and landscape elements.

Lorenz’s work has been exhibited at numerous museums and galleries, including a mid-career retrospective at the San Diego Museum of Art in 2018. Her most recent gallery exhibitions were at Gavlak Gallery (Los Angeles) and R & Company (New York). Lorenz frequently collaborates with leading international architects and designers, including Bill Georgis, Peter Marino, Brian McCarthy, Michael Smith, and William Sofield. Dustin Yellin (b. 1975, California) tells stories that weave together the diverse forces of nature and technology. Through his multidisciplinary body of work, which includes object making, painting, and animation, Yellin draws attention to the interconnectivity of all beings and things. His approach tunnels across traditionally siloed fields so as to crystallize the idea that the human world and all other worlds around us are a collection of enmeshed networks— even if many are hidden. Yellin’s glass works in particular, in which paint and images clipped from various print media are embedded within laminated glass sheets to form grand pictographic allegories, invite viewers to engage with the legions of their own consciousness and its embodied emotions, as well as that of our collective society and its infrastructures.

His artwork has been exhibited at Brooklyn Museum, Amorepacific Museum of Art, Museo Del Palacio de Bellas Artes, SCAD Museum of Art, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, City Museum, Colección SOLO, Corning Museum of Glass, and with Creative Time, among many others. Yellin is often featured in diverse media ranging from The New York Times to Artforum, Vanity Fair, and TED. He holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Yellin is the founder and director of Pioneer Works, a multidisciplinary cultural center that builds community through the arts and sciences. The artist balances descriptive poetry with a prescriptive social practice so as to span new ways of seeing and being, and build a bridge to a more holistic world.

He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

ED RUSCHA

METRO NEURO, 2022

9.3 in. x 12.6 in. / 23.6 cm. x 32 cm. (framed)

Ed Ruscha is an American artist whose oeuvre melds Pop Art iconography with the documentarian rigor of Conceptual Art. With a practice that spans drawing, painting, photography, film, printmaking, and publishing, Ruscha’s background as a graphic designer is evident in his subtle use of typography. He is perhaps best known for his artist’s books, such as Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963), as well as his word paintings, which skew the meaning of each word through color, background, and font. “I like the idea of a word becoming a picture, almost leaving its body, then coming back and becoming a word again,” he said of his inspiration.

Born on December 16, 1937, in Omaha, NE, he grew up in Oklahoma City before moving to Los Angeles to study art at the Chouinard Art Institute (now the California Institute of the Arts). Los Angeles as a place has proven to be a consistent wellspring for Ruscha’s imagination, which is deeply influenced by the culture and atmosphere of Southern California.

In 2016, he was the subject of a sprawling exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Titled Ed Ruscha and the Great American West, it included 99 works dealing with America’s captivation with the western landscape and manifest destiny. The artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

He continues to live and work in Los Angeles, CA.

5 ReasonsWE NEED A CURE

We won’t end HIV/AIDS without one

In spite of progress on treatment and prevention and the billions invested through international programs such as PEPFAR, 10 million people living with HIV still don’t have access to treatment. We know how to minimize the risk of HIV transmission via prevention tools, yet there were 1.3 million new infections in 2022. To end AIDS we need a preventive vaccine. And we need a cure.

The cost is unsustainable

Thousands are still dying

Le untreated, HIV remains a deadly virus. In 2022, 630,000 people died of AIDS-related illnesses—roughly one person every minute. If funding for global HIV treatment and prevention programs is cut, that number is sure to increase … dramatically.

Treatment for HIV remains a lifelong proposition and the lifetime medical cost of a single HIV infection in the U.S. is estimated to be around $420,000. This places an enormous burden on individuals and government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. While the cost of treatment is lower in many countries, those with limited resources are hard pressed to cope with the burden of HIV, on top of other prevalent diseases and conditions.

A cure will end HIV-related stigma

To this day, an HIV diagnosis comes with the added burden of stigma. Anti-stigma and HIV awareness campaigns seem to have little lasting impact, and stigma persists in every part of the world even though HIV is a treatable disease and people who are virally suppressed cannot transmit the virus to others. The availability of a cure that permanently removes HIV from a person’s body would remove stigma, too.

HIV is a driver of other deadly diseases

Since HIV depletes the immune system, it’s no surprise that the virus makes people susceptible to a range of other diseases and conditions. A cure for HIV would substantially reduce the incidence of o en deadly co-conditions, such as TB, hepatitis B and C, and cardiovascular disease.

Beyond the most urgent reason—to save lives—why do we need a cure for HIV?

An HIV RESEARCHER and ADVOCATE weigh in.

HIV has caused untold human suffering for over four decades, yet we now know we can beat it. In September 2023, for the first time ever, three individuals cured of HIV stood together in the same room. Seeing them united shoulder-to-shoulder and hearing their stories of achieving cure was inspiring. As an HIV researcher, this demonstrated the “why” in answer to the question of “why do we need an HIV cure?” We need a cure because the impact on someone who had previously lived with HIV, yet is now HIV-free, is simply life-altering. We can achieve this for everyone living with HIV. The time to cure HIV is now. —Dr. Jonah Sacha, Oregon Health & Science University, amfAR grantee

Living with HIV since 1995, for me, the world feels both fragile and resilient. Each pill is a testament to medical advances yet a constant reminder of my body’s vulnerability. The whisper of stigma is persistent, sometimes louder in my mind than in society. But amidst these challenges, there’s hope. New relationships are founded on deep understanding, communities bound by shared experiences, and an appreciation for life’s ephemeral nature. I’ve learned to harness strength from adversity, understanding that living isn’t merely surviving. I have learned to live with a renewed purpose and an unwavering will to keep thriving, but the hope for a cure is forever in my dreams. — Erika Castellanos, executive director of GATE (Global Action for Trans Equality)
