amfAR WELCOME MESSAGE

Welcome to amfAR Gala Venezia.

We are thrilled to be back in this magnificent city and are deeply grateful to our sponsors, Event Chairs, and everyone who has made this gala possible.

People are often shocked when they learn that every minute of every day, one person dies from AIDS-related illnesses and two others become infected with HIV. In spite of tremendous progress, this pandemic is far from over.

That’s why amfAR’s work remains as important and urgent as ever.

The proceeds from tonight’s gala will support research projects by leading scientists in the U.S., Europe, and around the world who are working toward a cure for HIV that can be made available to everyone who needs it. That “everyone” means the nearly 40 million women, men, and children—including 140,000 here in Italy—who are living with HIV.

Biomedical research is expensive, and events such as amfAR Venezia generate critical funds that make our work, and our progress towards a cure, possible. So we are extremely grateful to every one of you for joining us at this wonderful gala and for generously supporting our lifesaving work.

Thank you and have a wonderful evening.

BOROLI BAROLO DOCG 2014

Achille Boroli’s 2014 Barolo reveals a large frame of dark fruit with plenty of dark cherry and cassis at its core. This is a full and generous wine in terms of mouthfeel, with hints of licorice and garden herb that make for pretty accents. The wine’s overall aromatic intensity is reined in, and you get even more character on the palate.

YVES SCHERER

l’amour et la guerre, 2023

Lenticular print in artist frame

65.75 in. x 50 in. / 167 cm. x 127 cm.

Yves Scherer (b. 1987, Switzerland) is a Swiss contemporary artist living and working in New York. He graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2014 with an MA in Sculpture, after receiving a BA in Sciences of Culture from the University of Lucerne.

Experimenting with different mediums and forms, Scherer discusses themes ranging from gender identity, personal life experiences, and emotions to Hollywood culture, public media, and spectacle. The artist questions the boundaries of privacy while exploring the tensions between reality and virtuality, particularly during this digital age of instantaneity. Scherer uses behind-the-scenes stories to render daily moments with a striking combination of intimate thoughts and familiar faces. His work reflects on a voyeuristic desire to peek into the seemingly impenetrable lives of celebrities, and surveys society’s fascination with entertainment personalities and breaks the mythicized barrier between the fan’s imagination and the celebrity.

Scherer’s work has been exhibited at international institutions and galleries such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; Swiss Institute, New York; and Kunstverein Wiesen, Germany. He is the recipient of a Förderpreis Bildende Kunst des Kanton Solothurn 2012 and the Swiss Art Award in 2015, and was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 “Art and Design” Class of 2016.

MR. BRAINWASH

Pop Flowers, 2016

Mixed media on canvas

58.5 in. x 40 in. / 148.5 cm. x 101.6 cm.

For more than a decade, Thierry Guetta, under his moniker, Mr. Brainwash, has been pushing the envelope of contemporary art, attracting the attention of critics and celebrities alike. Innovative and fearless, he uses elements from pop art’s past and the raw components of his street art beginnings to create larger-than-life exhibitions and collaborations.

The tipping point for Mr. Brainwash was his inclusion in the widely acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, which traces the evolution of the street art movement through artists like Mr. Brainwash and Banksy.

Mr. Brainwash navigates between the worlds of film, celebrity culture, music, and sports—designing album covers for Madonna and Rick Ross, partnering with brands like Hublot and Coca-Cola, and showcasing his art on television shows such as Billions and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

In addition to solo exhibitions, speaking engagements at UCLA, Columbia University, and Semi Permanent, Australia’s largest creative conference, and annual residencies at Art Basel, he recently inaugurated The Mr. Brainwash Art Museum—the first contemporary art museum in the world created and run by a living artist—with the ongoing exhibition Enter Through the Museum, a nod to Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Passionate about giving back to the community, he continues to donate artwork in support of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, created commemorative 9/11 murals, and partnered with Product (RED) to raise AIDS awareness. Mr. Brainwash also lends yearly support to organizations such as The Prince’s Trust and has worked with Michelle Obama and Pope Francis on youthfocused initiatives.

SLIM AARONS

Slim Aarons portfolio of 10 photographs of Italy (1954–1991)

Framed portfolio of C-type prints, estate stamped

32.7 in. x 44.5 in. / 83 cm. x 113 cm.

From an edition of 150

American photographer Slim Aarons (1916–2006) made his mark shooting the social influencers of his day in rich, saturated colors and stunning black and white. During his long career, he created iconic portraits of acting giants Melina Mercouri, Dolores Del Río, and Clark Gable, writer Truman Capote, jazz musician Louis Armstrong, and fashion designer James Galanos, among countless others. Frequently shooting for Town & Country, Venture, and Holiday magazines, he captured socialites and jet-setters soaking up the sun on the beaches of the French Riviera, skiing the slopes in Gstaad, and boating on Lake Tahoe. Habitués of Venice, Rome, and Capri also became inspirations for his images.

The first time Slim Aarons went to Italy, it was as a World War II combat photographer. He moved back in 1948 to work as a photographer in LIFE magazine’s new Rome bureau and went back and forth for 50 years to photograph his now-famous subject matter: “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.”

This collection showcases Slim Aarons’s decades-long love affair with Italy. From breathtaking seaside aerials to intimate portraits of celebrities and high society, Aarons’ photographs celebrate the “dolce far niente” of an Italian summer. This curated collection, selected specially for amfAR, is truly all about Italy.

ANDY WARHOL

Mickey Mouse, 1981

Screen print in colors with diamond dust on Lenox Museum Board 44.49 in. x 44.49 in. / 113 cm. x 113 cm.

Signed in pencil, numbered 122/200

Andy Warhol’s iconic images are deeply engrained in the global consciousness. What is less well known about the artist is that the sale of his works has raised millions of dollars for amfAR. But Warhol’s support of amfAR went beyond the generous donation of his artworks—in 1986, he hosted one of amfAR’s earliest fundraising events at the New York Academy of Art.

The pop artist held a life-long fascination with fame, both courting it himself while choosing to feature pop culture’s most well-known figures in various works—Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Queen Elizabeth II, and Mickey Mouse, arguably the most famous of them all worldwide and to this day.

This piece, Mickey Mouse, is part of Warhol’s Myths portfolio. In 1981, Andy Warhol strayed from his conventional work and decided to create a portfolio of 10 screen prints of fictional characters, mostly from old Hollywood movies and 1950s and 60s television shows. Including characters such as Superman, Howdy Doody, Dracula—and Mickey Mouse—it would become known as the Myths series. Originally created by Walt Disney in 1928, Mickey Mouse undoubtedly stands out among all the others as he continues to hold a special place in people’s hearts.

EMMANUELLE RYBOJAD

In Love / Red, 2023

LED, mirrors, Plexiglas

Cold white exterior / Red interior

47.2 in. x 41.3 in. / 120 cm. x 105 cm.

Edition 1/8 + 4 AP

Visual artist Emmanuelle Rybojad (b. 1991) has quickly become one of the rising figures in contemporary art. Her works have been shown in renowned galleries from New York to Singapore, as well as in Paris, London, and Geneva.

Self-taught, she immersed herself in art from an early age with a collector stepfather who introduced her to the great artistic movements. As an artist, she has developed a deep and plural curiosity—a curiosity that pushes her to consider art elsewhere than on the walls.

“The first piece I made was a coffee table for my apartment. I wanted something unique, not the classic furniture,” she shares. “As I started thinking about this table, I wanted to play with the different materials and to change their typical use. I was always fascinated by lights, reflections, and mirrors, so I naturally worked around those effects for this first piece.”

Resolutely contemporary, her works are imbued with a multi-generational modernity that challenges and encourages introspection. Inspired by the symbols of Pop culture and the ’70s, she opens her studio to new materials, experiments with processes, and works in various media: mirrors, Plexiglas, neon lights, LED.

“If I had to define my art in one word, it would be ‘accessible,’” she notes. “I want my art to gather and make people share and exchange. It’s an invitation to enter my world and everybody is welcome.”

As a passionate advocate in the fight against AIDS, he helped galvanize the art community’s response to the epidemic and remained involved with the Foundation for 20 years as a champion and benefactor. GENEVA PATIENT: NEW CASE OF POSSIBLE HIV CURE

A study that draws on the work of amfAR’s ICISTEM researchers reports a sixth possible cure.

Dr. Asier Sáez-Cirión, of Institut Pasteur and a member of amfAR’s ICISTEM, a consortium of European researchers studying HIV-stem cell transplant cure interventions, recently presented his research team’s findings that another individual, known as the Geneva patient, may have been cured of HIV via a stem cell transplant.

The male patient received the transplant in 2018 to treat an aggressive form of leukemia, was treated for graft-versushost disease with immunosuppressants, and then stopped taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) three years later. He has now been off ART for 20 months, and Institut Pasteur, Institut Cohin, and ICISTEM researchers will continue to monitor him to see if he remains free of replication-intact HIV.

amfAR established ICISTEM in 2014, a few years after the first person, Timothy Ray Brown, was cured of HIV via stem cell transplant. Two others cured by this intervention—Adam Castillejo, the London patient, and Marc Franke, the Düsseldorf patient—are both part of amfAR’s ICISTEM cohort of people living with HIV and cancer who received stem cell transplants. While curing HIV via stem cell transplant is a high-risk and costly procedure that is not scalable for the millions of people living with HIV, the research provides a wealth of information about what’s needed to end AIDS once and for all.

The Geneva patient may prove to be a breakthrough. Instead of receiving donor cells with the CCR5-delta32 genetic mutation, which renders cells almost impervious to HIV infection, like the other five individuals who have been cured, the Geneva patient received “wild-type” donor cells—ones without the protective mutation. Evidence that this strategy may work has been presented in another study.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University, led by amfAR-funded scientist Jonah Sacha, recently published an animal study of infection with the monkey AIDS virus, SIV, and a similar transplant not involving CCR5. One of four animals so treated had no detectable virus several years after ART was stopped and appears to have been cured. The authors concluded that so-called “allogeneic immunity,” a graft-versus-host response that occurs after a routine stem cell transplant, has “the power to eliminate immunodeficiency virus reservoirs.” If we can harness such immunity outside of transplantation in novel approaches to HIV cure, the intervention could be applied more broadly across people living with HIV.
