A MESSAGE FROM amfAR

Welcome to amfAR Venezia.

Thank you so much for joining us this evening and for your generous support of our lifesaving research.

A recently reported seventh case of a person being cured of HIV and a new drug that appears to be 100 percent effective at preventing HIV acquisition are important signs of progress on AIDS. But it will likely be some time before this expensive new medication becomes widely available to all who need it. And the cure case is once again the result of a high-risk stem cell transplant performed on a patient who had both leukemia and HIV.

What we urgently need is a safe and affordable cure that can be made available to the 40 million people worldwide who are living with HIV (including 140,000 here in Italy). And that’s the goal to which amfAR has been firmly committed for the past two decades. The funds we raise this evening will support and advance the efforts of dedicated amfAR researchers in Europe, the U.S., and around the world who are striving to achieve that goal.

We are deeply grateful to our generous sponsors, Event Chairs, and everyone who has made this amfAR Venezia gala possible. As always, our work and achievements are driven by our unwavering determination to end AIDS and by your commitment and support, for which we are profoundly grateful.

Grazie mille.

ANDY WARHOL

Mick Jagger Invitation (Portfolio of 10), 1975

Offset lithograph

40 in. x 16.25 in. / 101.6 cm. x 41.3 cm. (framed)

Each image signed by Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol

By the 1970s, Andy Warhol no longer relied on found imagery and had considerably expanded his range of subjects. He often took his own photographs and increased this “handmade” look by adding collage elements using torn strips of graphic Color-aid paper.

Warhol met Mick Jagger in 1963 when The Rolling Stones were not yet well known in the United States and particularly liked his photogenic “bad boy” image. He designed the provocative cover for the band’s Sticky Fingers album, which focuses on a man’s denimed crotch and a working zipper that opened. Thanks in part to the design, the album proved to be a huge success, selling millions of copies.

During his lifetime, Warhol was a steadfast supporter of amfAR, generously donating artworks that raised millions of dollars. In 1986, he hosted one of amfAR’s earliest fundraising events at the New York Academy of Art.

Fascinated by Mick Jagger’s celebrity, Warhol created the Mick Jagger portfolio in 1975. The set of ten “invitations” in the portfolio were signed by Warhol and given to friends as invitations to an upcoming exhibit.

JULIAN LENNON EXPERIENCE

PHOTOGRAPH + BACKSTAGE MEET-AND-GREET + VIP EXHIBITION TOUR

Someone To Look Up To, 2010

Archival photographic print

58.38 in. x 85.97 in. / 148.28 cm. x 218.36 cm. (framed)

Singer/songwriter, philanthropist, documentary filmmaker, children’s book author, UNESCO Peace Laureate, award-winning literacy advocate, and fine art photographer—all describe the multitalented Julian Lennon, a longtime supporter of amfAR. For amfAR Venezia, Lennon has donated one of his powerful, meditative photographs—Someone To Look Up To, taken in 2010 when U2 were working on new music at a house he had rented in the South of France. As he was conversing with Bono, Julian saw the photo of his father, John, in the background and realized the angle in which he was viewing them both told the perfect story.

The winning bidder will enjoy backstage access after the auction closes and a meet-and-greet with Lennon, who will sign the photograph and take a photo with the winning party.

The following day, the winning bidder and five guests will be led on a VIP tour of “Whispers: A Julian Lennon Retrospective,” an exhibition at Le Stanze della Fotografia, by Julian’s co-curator Sandrina Bonetti Rubelli and Anna Colussi of the official exhibition office of Marsilio Arte srl. The exhibition showcases a rich body of work that spans Lennon’s diverse artistic journey, from his early days in music to his extensive photography portfolio. This special afternoon includes a hosted sit-down luncheon at the café.

Lennon began his artistic trajectory at a young age with an inherent gift for playing musical instruments. He has released seven albums, starting with Valotte, which yielded two top ten hits and secured a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. In 2022, he returned with the critically acclaimed album, Jude.

A noted philanthropist, Julian founded The White Feather Foundation in 2007 to help preserve and protect Indigenous cultures, and its mission has since expanded to address education, health, clean water, and the environment. In 2015, in honour of his late mother, he launched The Cynthia Lennon Scholarship for Girls.

This fall, Julian will release his first-ever coffee table book titled Life’s Fragile Moments—a stunning collection of images that span over two decades of Lennon’s unique life, career, adventures, and philanthropic efforts, reflecting his multifaceted creativity and innate curiosity.

CHRISTOPHER MAKOS

Double Basquiat, 2024

Silver gelatin print

Approximately 54 in. x 73 in. / 137.1 cm. x 185.4 cm.

From an edition of two unique prints

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Christopher Makos grew up in California and went on to study architecture in Paris before briefly working as an apprentice for the famed Surrealist photographer Man Ray. His photographs have been exhibited in more than 100 museums and galleries, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Modern in London, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the IVAM in Valencia, Spain, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Makos became a prominent figure in the New York downtown art scene where he befriended and created raw, indelible portraits of the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, Halston, Patti Smith, Mick Jagger, and Andy Warhol. Many of Makos’s seminal photobooks feature Warhol: Warhol/Makos In Context, Andy Warhol China 1982, and Warhol: A Photographic Memoir, which chronicles his close friendship and extensive travels with the artist.

With an incredible eye for emerging artists, Makos is responsible for introducing the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to Andy Warhol.

Makos photographed Basquiat frequently and produced stunning portraits of the artist. But the photographer has also reinterpreted older prints of the subject, sometimes with a mixed-media approach or as a collage. For example, this double portrait of Basquiat plays off Makos’s iconic photo from 1984, Basquiat with Africa on His Shoulder.

Said Makos: “Basquiat was a very interesting, soft-spoken, young AfricanAmerican artist. The picture that I have of Basquiat holding the globe: it’s no accident that he’s holding Africa in the picture because in many ways, he felt like he was the token black artist. He understood that he was the black artist that everybody wanted but he wasn’t sure if they wanted him or his work.”

KENNY SCHARF

Vespa, 2024

1962 classic Vespa in grey quartz

Fully restored with white detailing

Kenny Scharf (born in Los Angeles, 1958) attended Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts and came of age in the 1980s New York downtown art scene alongside his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

A painter and performer inhabiting the visual worlds of both street art and popular culture, Scharf’s paintings gained him notoriety and established a vernacular language all their own. Often working with improvisation, he creates playful, gestural pieces that blend stylized motifs with references to the surreal, science fiction, and icons of popular culture. Many of his larger works still adorn New York streets to this day.

Scharf’s artistic treatment of this vintage Italian scooter extends his creative fascination with reimagining objects from everyday life, turning televisions, boomboxes, telephones, cars, clocks, and much more into vibrant canvases.

SEAN KOONS

Never Used Only Damaged, 2020

Stainless steel chain, acrylic, and spray paint on surfboard

74 in. x 22 in. / 187.96 cm. x 55.88 cm.

Sean Koons, the eldest son of Justine and Jeff Koons, was immersed in the art world from a young age, cultivating a profound understanding and appreciation for its myriad forms. His unique style evolved through years of experimentation with canvases, initially influenced by his deep connection to music.

Sean’s distinctive brush strokes and patterns emerged as he painted to the rhythm of music, translating each color into an instrument. His paintings became a symphony on canvas, with each brush stroke representing a note’s duration or the width of a sound. This musical foundation laid the groundwork for his intricate pattern work.

Today, Sean’s art is driven by intention rather than music. Each stroke is meticulously crafted to direct the viewer’s attention, creating a dynamic interplay between light and shadow. Every stroke is made to bring the viewers’ attention away from somewhere else, or to hide in the shadows of dark that are in plain sight. Though primarily focused on canvas, Sean has also ventured into sculpture, continuously expanding his portfolio with the exciting opportunities that come his way.

Koons applied his signature style to this one-of-a-kind surfboard—a colorful interplay of bold shapes and lines on the front and pithy graffiti on the back.

NICLAS CASTELLO

The Kiss Pink, 2024 Special compound material

15.94 in. x 29.52 in. x 7.99 in. / 40.50 cm. x 75 cm. x 20.30 cm.

Unique 1/1 edition

Niclas Castello is one of the most successful and well-known contemporary artists working today. With his impressive paintings and sculptures (such as “The Kiss” series, one of which is up for bid), now among the most viewed and sought after in the world, he is a visionary in everything he does. Like no other artist before him, he breaks new ground in art and combines painting and sculpture into an unprecedented, revolutionary unity. In doing so, he writes art history. With his so-called cube paintings, which consist of destroyed canvas works in Plexiglas cubes formed into a sculpture, he sets a significant milestone in art history.

Inspired by Neo-Expressionism and Pop Art, Castello’s sculptural works also show a closeness to street art. The fall of the Berlin Wall in particular has influenced the artist, along with many other cultural influences. Today, it is mainly the small things in his surroundings that inspire him.

Born in Thuringia, Germany, in 1978, Castello was drawn to the street art scene in Paris at an early age. In 2005, he went to New York and met the legendary patron and influential curator Arleen Schloss. Once a mentor to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, she also inspired Castello to achieve his best.

In February 2022, he presented his matchless sculpture The Castello Cube in Manhattan’s Central Park, installed for one day only. Made of 186 kg of pure gold, the material value alone is today worth $14.8 million and thus garnered worldwide attention.

Today Castello lives and works in Switzerland, but often travels to New York, Los Angeles, and Beijing for creative inspiration. His work is in many prestigious collections around the world, including the Deutsche Bank Collection, The Tomita Collection, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Sheats-Goldstein Residence).

CURTIS KULIG

Untitled “Venice left,” 2024 Oil on linen

48 in. x 96 in. / 121.92 cm. x 243.84 cm.

Untitled “Venice right,” 2024 Oil on linen

48 in. x 96 in. / 121.92 cm. x 243.84 cm.

Curtis Kulig was born in 1981 in Minot, North Dakota. At a young age he was encouraged to follow an artistic path by his uncle, American painter Phillip Salvato, and father Walter Kulig, a screen printer. Over a decade ago, his private plea “Love Me” became part of the urban fabric of New York City. A loyal audience ensued, embracing the declaration with hope and optimism on a global scale. His studio practice consists of several mediums, including painting, drawing, and sculpture.

In 2018 he collaborated with Grear Patterson and Yves Scherer on a group show called “Happiness.” In this show he debuted his self-help series with a collection of mixed media work. They are collage-like mixtures of harsh brushstrokes, emotive sketches, and a mix of found photographs. In addition, 36 Men, a video piece which features thirty-six men demanding love, was also displayed. In 2020 Kulig’s solo exhibition “All Smiles” debuted at Kantor Gallery in Los Angeles, connecting his signature take on “Love Me” with the iconic smiley in an array of colorful circular-shaped paintings. That same year Kulig completed the first act of the Target Series in which the artist creates a single painting each month to map his emotional state with the final act completed once Kulig turns 50, marking 180 paintings in total.

In 2022 he created an interactive installation for the Diriyah Biennale in Saudi Arabia. And in 2023 his sabbatical in Paris culminated in the exhibition “Harmonie et Désir,” curated by Léo Fourdrinier and featuring his oil paintings alongside works by Yves Scherer and Aristide Maillol at Pal Project in Paris. Kulig also appears in collaborations with Mark Gonzales, Max Blagg, Robert Longo, and the New Museum.

Kulig has been featured in Office Magazine, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal and is a frequent contributor of works to charity auctions including Free Arts NYC, (RED), The Art of Elysium, and The Tibetan Fund. In 2021 Kulig donated work to the Tribeca Film Festival curated by Vito Schnabel and has done special projects with brands including Cartier, Issey Miyake, Nike, and Tiffany & Co.

Fred Allard is a rising figure in contemporary art, with his work featured in 30 galleries worldwide, including Venice, New York, Dubai, and London. He also designed and operates his own 200 square-meter gallery in the south of France, near his studio.

Allard revisits portraiture to reveal the unseen: history, memories, and personality. His process involves identifying meaningful objects with his subjects and immortalizing them in transparent resin. The result is a polished, captivating sculpture filled with familiar artifacts and deeper meanings.

This approach allows him to create portraits of individuals, cities, families, brands, or companies. Many personalities, including Charles Leclerc, Raphaël Varane, Neymar Júnior, and Tony Parker, have trusted him to sculpt their portraits. Through his representations of contemporary society and its icons, Fred Allard has established himself as a portraitist of the 21st century.

Magical Evening–Paper Bag is the pinnacle of the luxury paradox, simple paper containing value and beauty. In his paper bag collections, Fred composes with actual bags from high-end luxury brands and fills them with popular symbols such as Coca-Cola and Chupa Chups. Finished, his pieces create a sumptuous blend of genres by transcending the codes of two opposing worlds.

TERRY O’NEILL

Sophia Loren, 1978

Gelatin silver print

24 in. x 20 in. / 60.96 cm. x 50.8 cm.

From an edition of 50

Estate-stamped on reverse

Terry O’Neill CBE (1938-2019) is one of the world’s most collected photographers, with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars, he photographed the front line of fame for over six decades.

O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars, and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion, and music that would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest print publications in the world.

He photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they were still struggling young bands in 1963 and pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton, and Chuck Berry. His images have adorned historic rock albums, movie posters, and international magazine covers.

O’Neill also excelled at capturing film actors at work (or taking a break from work)—a joking Sean Connery playing golf on a deserted lunar landscape film set during Diamonds Are Forever, Robert Redford relaxing while shooting Three Days of the Condor and conversing with former director of the CIA Richard Helms on New York’s East River Lane, and Audrey Hepburn lounging poolside in St. Tropez for Two for the Road. In this auction lot, O’Neill finds a wistful Sophia Loren in character on the set of Brass Target, a thriller filmed on location in Switzerland.

AIDS AT A Crossroads

The 2024 update on the global HIV epidemic from the United Nations shows that progress on AIDS is “highly uneven.” Here’s where we stand:

PROGRESS IS BEING MADE….

77%

people living with HIV are now receiving antiretroviral therapy

39%

fewer people acquired HIV in 2023 compared with 2010

Sustained access to treatment translated to the lowest number of AIDS deaths since their peak in 2004.

…BUT MORE WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE

28 the number of countries where HIV infections are increasing

3 Regions

In particular, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa are experiencing rising rates of infection.

43% of the 1.4 million children living with HIV were not receiving antiretrovirals

While children make up only 3% of people living with HIV, they accounted for 12% of all AIDS-related deaths in 2023.

At the end of the day, only a cure for HIV will end AIDS once and for all.
