MESSAGE FROM amfAR
Welcome to the fourth annual amfAR Palm Beach gala.
Thank you for joining us this evening. We are profoundly grateful to the Palm Beach community, to our sponsors and supporters, and in particular to Ken Griffin for making this wonderful event possible. Your generosity provides critical support for amfAR’s pioneering research aimed at ending the global HIV/AIDS epidemic and addressing other pressing public health challenges.
While there is much more work to be done, we have made great progress in combatting HIV over the past 40 years. amfAR’s research has contributed to the development of powerful drugs that enable people with HIV to live long and productive lives. Eight people have been cured as a result of stem cell transplantation. Our overriding priority now is to develop a practical, affordable, and accessible cure that can be made available to all 40 million people who need it.
This is a time of great promise for biomedical research. Emerging technologies and once-unimaginable computing power could usher in a new age of innovation and discovery. As it always has done, amfAR’s research will continue to benefit the lives of people living with HIV while also contributing to the prevention and treatment of other diseases and conditions. Your support this evening will enable us to make judicious new investments that extend and save lives in the U.S. and around the world.
Enjoy the evening—and thank you for your generosity.
With gratitude,
T. Ryan Greenawalt

WINE
CHÂTEAU MALARTICLAGRAVIÈRE BORDEAUX BORDEAUX
GRAND CRU CLASSÉ RED GRAND CRU RED
The 2016 Malartic-Lagravière has a wonderful bouquet of perfumes. The fresh, harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. With just the right amount of salinity, the dense and silky mouthfeel is giving full expression to a long, enveloping tannic structure. The richness of flavors, red and black fruit, a hint of spice, and mocha-chocolate, becoming slightly smoky, combined with a superb balance, offers a sensation of exceptional freshness. A superb and elegant wine to drink now or to keep in the cellar.
LA RÉSERVE DE MALARTIC WHITE, 2020 LA RÉSERVE DE MALARTIC WHITE, 2020
The Malartic 2020s are characterized by excellent density, with concentration balanced by remarkable freshness. The tannins are sleek and elegant in this particularly well-balanced vintage. The whites exhibit terrific aromatic purity and truly stand out—they are precise, polished, round, and fragrant.
RUMOR CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ RUMOR DE PROVENCE
This vintage is elegant and light—with a nose of white flowers and citrus. After aeration, the notes evolve to peach and pomelo. The palate is clean and unfolds elegantly to a smooth finish, leaving citrus notes.

ANDREW BRISCHLER
Self Portrait (as Catherine, Pink), 2025 Gouache, colored pencil, and graphite on paper mounted to panel 66 in. x 50 in. / 167.64 cm. x 127 cm.
Andrew Brischler makes paintings and drawings that examine his own queer identity through the lens of American popular culture. With an art practice firmly grounded in drawing, Brischler is best known for creating graphically bold work that investigates how our cultural consumption is inherently linked to our autobiographies.

Self Portrait (as Catherine, Pink) depicts Elizabeth Taylor—amfAR’s Founding International Chairman— as Catherine Holly in the 1959 psychosexual drama Suddenly, Last Summer, based on the play by Tennessee Williams. In the film, Catherine is institutionalized by her venomous aunt played by Katharine Hepburn in an attempt to cover up a family secret. Co-starring gay icon Montgomery Clift as a tortured psychiatric surgeon, the film has been canonized by queer film historians for its high-camp melodrama and veiled references to homosexuality. As the title of Brischler’s Self Portrait series suggests, the artist implicates himself into the narrative of the film, examining his own 21st century queer experience through Taylor’s portrayal of Catherine, a character desperate for freedom, agency, and understanding.
Brischler holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, New York, and a BFA from the State University of New York, New Paltz. He was the recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Painting Fellowship in 2015 and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Arts Grant in 2013.
Most recently, he mounted a solo presentation with GAVLAK at the Independent Art Fair in May 2024. Previously, he has had solo exhibitions with GAVLAK Palm Beach (2023; 2019; 2013; 2012) and GAVLAK Los Angeles (2021; 2017; 2015); at The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, New York; at The Arts Club, London; and at 39 Great Jones, New York, New York. His work has been included in group exhibitions at The Bunker Artspace: The Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, West Palm Beach, Florida; the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, New York; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas; Nathalie Karg Gallery, New York, New York; and Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich.
Born on Long Island, New York, the artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

CHRISTOPHER MAKOS
Double Basquiat, 2024
Silver gelatin print gloss, collage of two unique prints
Approximately
54 in. x 73 in. /
137.1 cm. x 185.4 cm.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Christopher Makos grew up in California and went on to study architecture in Paris before briefly working as an apprentice for the famed Surrealist photographer Man Ray. His photographs have been exhibited in more than 100 museums and galleries, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Modern in London, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the IVAM in Valencia, Spain, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Makos became a prominent figure in the New York downtown art scene where he befriended and created raw, indelible portraits of the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, Halston, Patti Smith, Mick Jagger, and Andy Warhol. Many of Makos’s seminal photobooks feature Warhol: Warhol/Makos In Context, Andy Warhol China 1982, and Warhol: A Photographic Memoir, which chronicles his close friendship and extensive travels with the artist.
With an incredible eye for emerging artists, Makos is responsible for introducing the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to Andy Warhol.
Makos photographed Basquiat frequently and produced stunning portraits of the artist. But the photographer has also reinterpreted older prints of the subject, sometimes with a mixed-media approach or as a collage. For example, this double portrait of Basquiat plays off Makos’s iconic photo from 1984, Basquiat with Africa on His Shoulder
Said Makos: “Basquiat was a very interesting, soft-spoken, young African-American artist. The picture that I have of Basquiat holding the globe: it’s no accident that he’s holding Africa in the picture because in many ways, he felt like he was the token black artist. He understood that he was the black artist that everybody wanted but he wasn’t sure if they wanted him or his work.”

HILARY PECIS
Favorite Things, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
64 in. x 74 in. x 1.625 in. / 162.56 cm. x 187.96 cm. x 4.14 cm.
Hilary Pecis (b. 1979, Fullerton, California) makes paintings and drawings in which tableaus rich with interlocking fields of saturated color, geometric patterning, and bold linework provide views of sun-drenched domestic still lifes and landscape environments. Books crowding a coffee table, the remains of a dinner party, and terrains lush with Southern California succulents make frequent appearances in her work; these meticulously arranged interiors and vibrantly rendered exteriors amount to an overarching portrait of the self that identifies objects and locations as signifiers for human characteristics. Pecis combines distorted perspectives and surprising juxtapositions of hue, placing her work in dialogue with modernist art historical movements like Fauvism in which subjective and analytical tendencies are synthesized. At the same time, her interest in images sourced from her personal experience allows her to transform recognizable mise-en-scènes into vivid explorations that celebrate the quiet moments of everyday life.
Pecis has been the subject of solo exhibitions at TAG Art Museum, Qingdao, China (2023); Rockefeller Center, New York (2021); and Crisp-Ellert Art Museum, Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida (2019).
Recent group exhibitions include Map Reading of Painting, Daegu Art Museum, Korea (2024); Day for Night: New American Realism, Palazzo Barberini, organized by the Aïshti Foundation, Rome (2024); A Journey, Yuz Museum, Shanghai 2023); The Interior Life: Recent Acquisitions, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (2023); 13 Women: Variation I, Orange County Museum of Art, Costa Mesa, California (2022–2023); Common Ground: UCCA 15th Anniversary Patrons Collection Exhibition, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2022); Present Generations: Creating the Scantland Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio (2021); FEEDBACK, The School at Jack Shainman Gallery, Kinderhook, New York (2021); L.A.: Views, MAKI Gallery, Tokyo (2020); and High Voltage, The Nassima Landau Project, Tel Aviv, Israel (2020).
Her work is in the permanent collections of institutions, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio; Palm Springs Art Museum, California; and Aïshti Foundation, Beirut.
Pecis lives and works in Los Angeles.

THE POWER AND PROMISE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES
As a scientist working, until recently, in an HIV research lab in New York City, I have always been driven by the challenge of solving complex scientific puzzles and the possibility of having an impact on people’s lives in the process.
As the new director of research at amfAR, I’m delighted to be joining this storied organization at a moment when the frontiers of biomedical research are opening up in new and exciting ways.
Artificial intelligence is much talked about for its potential to shape our future. Its computing power could help unearth patterns and clues that could point to new ways of attacking HIV and other harmful viruses. Additional powerful technologies that could revolutionize our search for treatments and cures are also emerging. amfAR will be sure to capitalize on these technological advances wherever possible.
It’s deeply gratifying to be part of an independent research organization that is not averse to risk, that can quickly react as new scientific opportunities emerge, and that supports outstanding young researchers as well as seasoned investigators.
And it is humbling to know that amfAR’s work is made possible by the extraordinary generosity of individuals, like you, who believe in our mission and have faith in our ability to achieve it. I have every confidence that your generous support will be rewarded with new discoveries and breakthroughs— and a cure for HIV that can be made available to all who need it.
Thank you for your support.

Every celebrity who speaks up for a cause today usually gives a nod to using their “platform” for good. One could argue that Dame Elizabeth Taylor, amfAR’s founding international chairman, invented the platform, as we know it.
Taylor’s powerful, compassionate voice, alongside Dr. Mathilde Krim, amfAR’s founding chairman, undoubtedly spurred the U.S. government and others to take action—to invest in lifesaving research, treatment, prevention, and education.
Since then, many bold names have followed in Dame Elizabeth’s footsteps—Madonna, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Antonio Banderas, Milla Jovovich, Janet Jackson, Heidi Klum, Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Leonardo DiCaprio, Zhang Ziyi, Harry Belafonte, and the list goes on. Here is a sampling of quotes from some of amfAR’s recent celebrity advocates.

“There is no greater way to honor those we is no greater way to honor those we have lost than to stand resolutely with those have lost than to stand with those who are alive and fighting today.” who are
