2 Diamond Magazine

Welcome!

Welcome to the May/June 2024 edition of Diamond.

Although as I write this the weather isn’t showing any signs of improving (it’s actually grey and drizzly outside with no promise of Summer in sight!), the same can’t be said of the growth in gdb Membership, which has been going from strength to strength since the Autumn. We have welcomed new member businesses from across our region and are delighted to see previous member companies returning to enjoy the benefits of being part of our business community.

This edition of Diamond highlights

the prestigious Gatwick Diamond Business Awards 2024 which took place in March at The Grand, Brighton with Simon Brodkin as our hilarious celebrity host. You can see full details of this year’s winners on pages 6-9. Huge congratulations to them, and our sincere thanks once again to our 2024 Headline and Category Sponsors, whose support enables us to celebrate the good and the great from across our exciting and vibrant region.

For the second year running, we ran our GDBA Charity Draw with prizes kindly donated by JetBlue, Delta Airlines and the Grand, Brighton. Our thanks to them, to everyone who bought tickets on the night and to the RPD Foundation for managing the process. Almost £4,500 was raised which has been distributed to our eligible Charity Members who do such valuable work for those in need across our region.

And staying on the subject of charities, there are lots of great examples of members supporting local charities in the pages that follow, with a special mention to our very own Ciaran Donohue, who ran 10k last month to help raise funds for Family Support Work. Well done to Ciaran, and to everyone else who has offered their valuable support.

Our front-page this edition features train operator Southern who, in an effort to improve the existing rail timetable,

will double services between London, Gatwick, Crawley and Portsmouth from June. See full page 36 for more information about the changes and why they have been introduced.

On page 4 our Member Spotlight shines on Mark Blunden, BDM at Xpress Group. We are delighted to hear that gdb membership, regular attendance at events and strategic sponsorship engagement has helped Xpress Group raise their business profile across the region.

April saw the launch of Business Surrey, a Surrey County Council led initiative providing free and accessible support for all businesses in Surrey. I look forward to representing our Surrey Business members as part of the Surrey Business Leaders Forum alongside other leading Surrey-based companies. See page 23 for more information and a link to their brand-new website and our thanks to Surrey County Council for their sponsorship of this edition of Diamond.

My thanks as usual to Creative Pod for the design of Diamond, with additional congratulations to Matt Turner and the team as Creative Pod turned 18 in April! (see page 21). Thanks also to all of you who have contributed your news, inspiring stories and advice.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

1. What appealed to you about joining gdb?

I sampled gdb in previous employ having been introduced by Steve Jebson. It immediately felt like the place to be for business across the region. I insisted Xpress joined gdb during my interview.

2. What was the thing that surprised you about gdb?

Just how relaxed and friendly it all is. The stiffness and formalities of other networking groups isn’t there and clearly doesn’t need to be. It always feels like people having fun while doing business.

3. What’s the biggest single thing you’ve got from being a member of gdb?

A whole bunch of new customers. It works, simple as that.

Name: Mark Blunden

Business name: Xpress Group Creative Print and Signage

4. What difference has being a member of gdb made to your business?

It has upped our profile across the region. One of the first people I spoke to on joining Xpress said he had never heard of us. Some months later, he saw me again and said, ‘you are everywhere!’. Our membership and regular event attendance is a big part of why this happened.

5. gdb puts on lots of different types of events - what’s your favourite? The Experts Conference at Roffey Park. I like the mix of networking, talks, and stands. Mandi always ensures the sun shines too!

6. What’s different about gdb compared to other networking you do?

That it feels like a club open to all. A place where people want to come and make good contacts in a relaxed and professional group.

7. What’s your top tip for getting the most out of networking? Be you, relax and have fun.

8. Besides the events, what else do you get out of your gdb membership? We have sponsored some events and placed articles in newsletters and Diamond magazine. Volunteering as an ambassador also helps with profile and gives me a good sense of giving back to this fantastic business group.

Government reforms supporting apprenticeships

As you may or may not know, as of the 1st April, the government made some significant changes that will impact all SMEs when it comes to accessibility to apprentices.

These changes include the elimination of co-investment payments for businesses with apprentices under 22 years of age, as well as apprentices aged between 22-24 who have an EHCP. This frees up funds that can be used for a whole host of other training benefits for your business.

What are these benefits?

With the co-investment funds now freed up businesses can re-invest by offering above the minimum apprentice wage to new apprentices. Thereby this can, not only attract the best candidates to apply to ‘your’ business, but can also

increase retention of the apprentice. Another way employers can make good use of the newly available funds, would be to invest in more CPD for their current employees. Group learning sessions are a really effective way of upskilling a whole department on the same day and ensure that they have all received the same quality of training. Not only does this improve staff knowledge but can also act as a team-building/morale boosting activity when the course is provided by highly engaged expert trainers, like the ones we employ here at Rewards Training.

These are just a few of the many positive effects that the funding reforms can have on your business’s current employees and future talent should you decide to invest in your workforce of tomorrow.

Empowering diversity by embracing intersectionality

Intersectionality, a term coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, highlights the intricate interplay of various aspects of an individual's identity, shaping their unique experiences and challenges. Failure to acknowledge intersectionality results in overlooking the distinct needs of individuals navigating multiple marginalised identities.

Incorporating intersectionality

into organisational practices and culture is imperative. It enables your organisation to provide deeper, more nuanced understanding and cultivates empathy. It also allows for a fairer and more welcoming environment for all employees. Embracing it strengthens inclusivity, will help inform effective policy and practice, and will guard your business against tokenism and exclusion.

The immense benefits include enhanced understanding of different lived experiences, fostering empathy, and promoting respect for diverse identities; the cultivation of an inclusive culture that boosts employee engagement and drives innovation; huge improvements in decision-making by identifying biases and ensuring equitable outcomes; enhanced attractiveness for a broader

talent pool and strengthened customer relationships by addressing diverse needs; and the reduction in turnover and conflicts, aiding in compliance and risk management by promoting fairness and equity, thereby mitigating legal and reputational risks associated with discrimination.

In conclusion, by recognising and addressing the complex interplay of privilege and discrimination, your organisation will cultivate a diverse and equitable workplace where employees feel respected, valued, and empowered, regardless of their intersecting identities.

Such recognition will not only benefit your teams but it will, importantly, also contribute to societal progress.

team fosters transparency and trust. For instance, regular team meetings provide avenues for feedback, ensuring everyone's voice is heard.

Leading by example is equally important. Demonstrating integrity, empathy and appreciation for your employees' efforts sets the tone for workplace culture. Your leadership should inspire your people to embody these values, contributing to a positive atmosphere.

Encouraging collaboration and teamwork cultivates a sense of unity and purpose too. Be bold! Recognise

Emotional Regulation

This is the ability to maintain a good state; basically, be calm and present, or whatever state is appropriate for the situations we happen to be in. We don’t always notice when we do this well, but we certainly notice its absence.

Think: Mood Swings. Emotional Outbursts. Temper Tantrums. Losing our Cool.

And when we find all these things happening, it might seem impossible to control, as you’ll know if you’ve ever tried to reason with somebody who’s about to blow their top, whether that’s an overworked, stressed adult, a hormonal teenager or anyone with sensory overload.

You need a plan!

The trick is to notice what’s causing Emotional Dysregulation. EVERYTHING. All the little things that disrupt our sense of peace and happiness. Most of this will probably seem insignificant, but it all

adds up and we then find we’ve gone past the point of being able to stop an eruption.

These things might include:

y Worrying about things that might go wrong

y Being overworked

y Conflict with other people

y Unhealthy diet including high sugar / additives / fast food

y Lack of exercise

y Too much screen time

y Insufficient / Poor quality sleep

These are just some of the things that ‘add to our load’ and can contribute to or worsen the effects of any condition we are trying to manage, whether it’s anxiety, ADHD, chronic fatigue, IBS, insomnia, headaches, pain or stress.

When we learn to manage Emotional Regulation, our hormones balance out, our body functions better, then we can concentrate easier, have more energy,

do more, sleep better. Our relationships, jobs and lives get easier and we can feel and function so much better.

If you need help with Emotional Regulation, please get in touch.

The advantages of flexible energy purchasing for businesses

With utility expenditure high on the agenda, the importance of energy procurement strategies cannot be overstated. Flexible energy purchasing can offer businesses a strategic advantage over traditional fixed-price contracts.

Clients adopting a flexible procurement strategy can gain access to constant market monitoring, allowing them to adapt quickly to fluctuations and take advantage of dips in the market, spreading risk more strategically.

Businesses can gain valuable insights into their energy performance through their Wholesale Market Access (WMA) dashboard. Many energy procurement specialists provide this through customised client portals, providing transparency and empowering businesses to make data-driven decisions.

Flexible procurement specialists assess the client's risk appetite and tailor energy commodity price risk management accordingly. When choosing a flexible

energy manager, choose one who has experience in managing diverse energy portfolios. This adds a layer of security and optimisation to the overall energy strategy not just for the present but also for the future.

You’ll also want a flexible energy manager that communicates with you regularly and provides daily market insight reports. It’s important that you’re informed about market trends and legislation, allowing you to balance short-term and longer-term risk management effectively.

With tailored guidance from energy advisors, flexible energy purchasing also allows businesses to explore renewable and green purchasing options as they work towards their sustainability goals.

For an at-large chat about whether flexible energy procurement is right for your business, contact Control Energy Costs’ Client Relationship Manager, John Loizou at cec.uk.com

Double Innovate UK funding success for Sussex Innovation members

Two Sussex Innovation members were successful in the latest round of seed funding from the Innovate UK Accelerated Knowledge Partnerships programme, after submitting bids alongside the University of Sussex Innovation and Business Partnerships team to collaborate with researchers at the University.

Emotion measurement and analytics technology company Emteq is collaborating with Professor Martin Yeomans from the School of Psychology after being introduced to each other at one of Sussex Innovation's regular community socials.

Are you increasingly challenged by supplier ESG Questionnaires?

Large businesses are increasingly incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into their procurement processes, and tender documents are a key tool for assessing potential suppliers’ ESG performance and commitment. However, SMEs often lack the resources and expertise to address these demands comprehensively. Understanding the key areas of focus and proactive preparation are essential for SMEs to navigate this effectively.

ESG considerations in tender documents encompass environmental, social, and governance. Environmental aspects include climate change mitigation, resource management and pollution prevention. Social considerations involve employment practices, human rights and community engagement. Governance factors encompass corporate governance and transparency.

To prepare for ESG questionnaires, SMEs must conduct thorough internal assessments, identifying strengths, weaknesses and prioritising improvement areas. Foundational

practices, such as formal policies, tracking relevant data and raising awareness among employees are crucial. Leveraging industry frameworks, seeking external guidance and exploring government initiatives can provide invaluable support.

Starting with small, impactful changes allows SMEs to demonstrate progress effectively. Transparent communication of ESG commitment through various channels fosters trust and credibility. Continuous review and adaptation of strategies ensure ongoing improvement.

For SMEs it is important to focus on the material aspects that matter to their business and clients. This involves being transparent and truthful in all their transactions. Furthermore, SMEs should engage with their stakeholders to create strong and lasting relationships. This will provide valuable insights into their clients' needs and expectations, which can help improve their products or services. Ultimately, this approach can lead to increased customer loyalty and greater success for the SME.

Redundancy – What do you need to know?

With the pressure of increased overheads and costs, some employers are having to consider downsizing their workforce to keep their business afloat and are therefore having to consider making redundancies (sometimes for the first time).

However, it is not as easy as picking the poor performing employees and dismissing them or adopting a “last in, first out” approach. You need to establish a strong business case and have a fair approach to the redundancy process. Here are some of the considerations that should be at the forefront of employers’ minds:

1. Check redundancy is needed Have a business case, consider what the alternative options are.

2. Identify which roles are affected and ‘pool’ the roles for selection

It is important to identify roles not individual employees.

3. Place employees ‘at risk’ and commence consultation with them

Encourage your employees to suggest alternatives to redundancy. Ensure they are aware that redundancy is not a foregone conclusion.

4. Selection for redundancy

Construct fair and objective selection criteria.

5. Offer alternative roles

Consider the new legislation protecting returning mothers and new parents from redundancy in addition to new and/or vacant positions or changes to terms and conditions.

6. Calculate redundancy pay

From both a statutory point of view and with consideration to any contractual entitlements employees may have.

7. Dismissal and appeal

Employees have the right to appeal, you must ensure that the appeal Chair is appropriate and impartial.

The above is a high level overview of some of the primary considerations that

Redundancy can be a daunting process and employers who don’t follow correct procedures may be liable for unfair dismissal claims and compensation, therefore it is important to get it right.

University of Sussex service helps employers trial a 4-day week, improving staff wellbeing and performance

Could working fewer hours benefit your business?

Trials of a 4-day week, with no salary loss, are boosting productivity, staff wellbeing, and even gender equality. Evidence from national trials – and local trials here in Sussex – shows positive results: better mental health, improved focus, and higher efficiency.

In a 2022 UK-wide trial, 61 businesses with 3,000 staff adopted the 4-day week. Six months into the trial, 92% of employers had continued the 4-day week, and the latest results have shown that 18 months on, 89% are still operating in this way.

So why offer staff regular time off with no pay cut? Because a 4-day week can simultaneously improve staff wellbeing, workplace performance, retention, and recruitment.

Dr Charlotte Rae and her University of Sussex Business School team have

Wellness Strategy

The discourse surrounding mental health and wellbeing has increased significantly over the past couple of years, not least because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whilst the increase in transparency surrounding mental health is a positive shift, unfortunately some businesses do not have the appropriate structures in place to support their employees.

A recent report carried out by Headspace into mental health in the workplace highlights the impact that work can have on individuals with 77 percent of employees saying that ‘work-related stress has negatively affected their physical health’. With work impacting so significantly on both mental and physical wellbeing, it is important that companies are able to support their employees to prevent burnout and long-term harm.

helped local employers successfully trial and adopt the 4-day week. They support organizations throughout the journey, advising on restructuring, maximizing productivity, and measuring the impact.

Sussex 4 Day Week is the UK's leading quantitative research team in this field, using psychological insights to optimize trials and assess outcomes. Their work with 15 Sussex businesses shows significant impacts on mental health, sleep, and workplace performance.

Reduced hours led to better sleep, lower burnout, higher productivity, and increased work motivation. Importantly, they found links between improved wellbeing and performance: the more someone's sleep improved, the more their productivity went up, and the more their burnout reduced, the more their work motivation increased.

Visit www.sussex4dayweek.co.uk for case studies and a free guide to getting

‘4-day week ready’. The trial remains open – consider a 4-day week, 9-day fortnight, or other productivity-focused schedule. Contact:

charlotte@sussex4dayweek.co.uk

Managers are often the first point of contact individuals turn to if they require additional support at work; however, the report found that only 24 percent of HR leaders say that managers are required to take mental health specific training. This in itself can place additional stress on managers if they do not have the sufficient resources to address the situation.

These statistics highlight the value in putting a wellness strategy in place at all levels of the business so that employees know where to turn should things become challenging. The strategy could include bringing in a qualified Mental Health at Work First-Aider as an initial contact point, or encouraging employees to practice mindfulness. Prioritising the wellbeing of employees has an impact on workplace culture and productivity, the benefits of which are

felt throughout the company. Wellbeing practices are increasingly being viewed as a necessity by prospective employees as well as an essential part of an effective HR strategy. For further information please contact:

How do you make a town a better place to live for its residents?

In January 2023 we worked with 20 Crawley residents over 7 weeks to discover the change that people want to see in Crawley. The results underpin the vision and aims of all the work we do.

People told us they feel Crawley is an uninspiring townscape that is colourless and lacking in character. They said they want Crawley to be known as a place where creativity is visible across the town and where people feel inspired just by walking around.

In response to this, the project we run, Creative Playground Crawley, convened a group of volunteers (called Playmakers) specifically to work on a project to create a series of large scale murals across the town.

Watch a film here about the story so far. 350 local people have fed into the designs and have spoken to the 6 artists we commissioned (from a pool of 126 world-wide applications). Thanks to key partnerships we have secured the money to make them possible including Crawley Borough Council, Crawley Town Centre BID and Manor Royal

BID (alongside Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places funding).

The murals launch on 9th May. They are the first step we are taking to make sure everything is interesting in Crawley, even a walk to the shops. And we hope it might be a small move to make Crawley a better place for its residents.

Pop the Prosecco, Creative Pod Turns 18!

As of April 2024, the multi-awardwinning, Sussex-based marketing, design, and website agency Creative Pod is celebrating its 18th birthday. This milestone marks the significant passage of time and underscores the agency's unwavering commitment to creativity, excellence, and client satisfaction in the marketing industry.

Since its inception in 2006, the agency has worked with its clients to become their outsourced marketing department. They take pride in their approach, which has driven them to become a formidable force in the industry, earning accolades and acclaim along the way.

Reflecting on the journey, Matt Turner, CEO, said: “From my beginnings as a tea boy in Redhill to navigating the competitive landscape of Clapham Junction. I’m pleased that my perseverance and determination for creative ideas and unwavering belief that

‘marketing doesn't need to be boring’ has paid off.

The evolution of Creative Pod has been marked by a series of strategic acquisitions and expansion initiatives, each contributing to the agency's growing portfolio of services. From acquiring Gatwick Press, The Print Shop, in 2011 and 427 Marketing and Huga Digital Marketing in 2020, to the recent additions of 2UpFront in 2023, the agency's commitment to innovation and diversification remains unwavering.

To commemorate this milestone, Creative Pod unveiled a new anniversary logo at the beginning of April, symbolising its fun ‘coming of age’ side. The yearlong celebration also kicked off with a grand event on Brighton Palace Pier on the 25th of April, where the agency welcomed its client base and peers to celebrate the journey that has brought them to this moment.

New regime for building control introduced

With memories of the Grenfell disaster still fresh, the Government has set out a new statutory regime in regard to building safety. The Building Regulations 2010 (Building Regulations) were amended as from 1 October last year

following the Building Safety Act 2022.

Parties in construction projects should not make the mistake of thinking the focus on building safety simply affects residential projects. Changes to the Building Regulations affect all projects where the regulations apply. They identify a new regime for building control, overseen by a new ‘Building Safety Regulator’, and a new regime for ‘duty holders’ who are the client, the principal designer, the principal contractor, designers, and contractors. These duty holders will be accountable for the design and build of the project and must plan, manage, and monitor their work to ensure it complies with Building Regulations.

The new duty holder regime is similar to the CDM Regulations. Accordingly, a client will need to appoint a principal designer and principal contractor to perform the role under the amended Building Regulations and ensure they

Creative Pod has achieved remarkable success, and the agency is confident that the best is yet to come. If you want to work with them, contact:

creativepod.uk.com

are competent to perform that role.

The client must provide a signed compliance declaration confirming that to the best of their knowledge, the work complies with all applicable requirements of the Building Regulations. The principal designer and principal contractor must also provide signed compliance declarations confirming they have fulfilled their duties under Part 2A of the Building Regulations. Building control will not be able to issue any compliance certification without these signed compliance declarations.

Professional contracts and building contracts will need to be updated to reflect these new duty holders. JCT has announced an updated JCT Design and Build 2024 that will be published on 17 April to account for the new Building Regulations.

10k success for Ciaran and Family Support Work

Family Support Work, one of the gdb charity members, relies on voluntary income to fund all of its work throughout Sussex with families in crisis. Fundraising events form a large part of this, and FSW was thrilled to have gdb’s very own Ciaran running the Brighton Marathon 10k in early April.

Ciaran took to the windy streets of Brighton early on a Sunday morning and completed the race in a fabulous time of just under 55 minutes. Thanks to sponsorship from many gdb colleagues and members, Ciaran raised a wonderful £630 for FSW, which is being matched by a local Brighton-based funder. Two

How to make space for innovation

Previously having a reputation as a luxurious add-on for companies, recently, innovation has become business’ most invaluable tools.

Allowing your team space and time to innovate is a great use of resources; 20% of employees work better when motivated, and highly engaged teams boost company profitability by 21%. Here’s how:

Don’t add to the pile

Innovation shouldn’t add pressure onto existing workloads. Google's 20% time rule encouraged employees to focus on innovation one day a week. Although this was time for free thinking, it was still centred around the company's goals, and saw the genesis of Google News, Ad Sense and Gmail.

Take a field trip

Think about how you can create dedicated space for innovation; this could be getting out in nature, booking external creative spaces or by visiting an innovation hub. Experimenting with inspiring spaces can improve a team’s morale. Trials like Coworking Week in June at Plus X Innovation can be a great way to boost creativity thinking.

Mine for gold

Empower your team at every level and give all ideas equal respect and attention. You never know what might come out of it.

Internal or External Innovation

Rather than looking at internal and external innovation as separate, these options are more about how one can help bolster the other. Establishing partnerships with other innovators could broaden the scope of your internal innovation.

other runners took part for FSW with a total of £2770 being raised, which will enable 25 families to receive intensive support for a month.

Nikki Kerr, Director of Fundraising at FSW, said: “It was an absolute joy to have Ciaran running as part of team FSW and we’re so thrilled with his brilliant finish time as well as the incredible amount of sponsorship he was able to achieve. This just goes to show the benefits of being part of such a brilliant networking group where we’re always ready to help and support each other. Thank you Ciaran!” familysupportwork.org

5 Key Benefits of Outsourcing Your Back Office Finance Functions

Leading South East accountancy and business advisory firm Carpenter Box is seeing an increase in demand for its outsourced finance services. Joshua Bowen, Head of Outsourced Finance Function at the firm, provides his five top reasons for companies adopting this approach.

1. Efficiency and Savings

If your business’s progression is being restricted by the weight of back-office tasks, transferring finance functions, such as payroll, bookkeeping, financial analysis, and reporting to external specialists can lead to valuable efficiency and productivity gains. This includes reducing costs associated with hiring, training, and retaining full-time staff. The outsourcing model transforms fixed costs into variable ones, offering businesses the flexibility to pay for services as and when required.

2. Precision, Compliance and Expertise

Outsourcing finance functions can enhance accuracy and ensure regulatory

adherence, mitigating risks such as employee turnover, fraud, and noncompliance. The outsourcing model allows small businesses access to experienced finance professionals on a part-time basis, giving them the same advantages normally only afforded to larger entities with considerable staffing budgets.

3. Scalability

Outsourcing allows businesses to adjust their operations to meet changing needs. They can scale services up or down without being restricted by inhouse team limitations.

4. More time for core activities

Delegating back-office tasks allows businesses to focus on growth and strategic planning. With specialised providers handling these tasks, teams can dedicate their time to mission-critical areas, which can boost productivity, efficiency and streamline operations.

5. Access to technology

Outsourcing provides access to finance

The 5 types of fear that stop you taking action

At the root of most challenges my clients encounter, and the reason they are not taking positive action that gets better results, is fear.

Fear can be pervasive and mostly, clients are not consciously aware of it, making it more challenging to overcome. Our unconscious thoughts govern up to 95% of our automatic actions and reactions!

1. Fear of Rejection (by others, usually who we mistakenly regard as ‘better’ than us, feeling not ‘good enough’ and that rejection will harm us in some way).

2. Fear of Embarrassment (can trigger feelings of shame, being found out, anxiety in social situations, related to hyper-critical/negative view of self).

3. Fear of the Unknown (uncertainty and ambiguity, change. Our

brains value certain pain more favourably than an uncertain yet positive outcome).

4. Fear of Failure (things will be worse as a result of doing this, I won’t be able to support myself/my family, it won’t work for me specifically (but it will work for others), I’ll be ridiculed for failing).

5. Fear of Success

(it will be hard, busy, stressful, overwhelming, can’t maintain it, I’ll lose it/I don’t deserve it, I’ll be excluded if I am better than others).

If you are encountering a challenge in your business and experiencing inertia around a decision or taking action, take a moment to explore which fear might be present. Here are some coaching questions to help you take action:

y What is the worst case scenario I am worried about?

y How likely is the worst case scenario? (Usually, highly unlikely).

y What would be the impact of the worst case if it should happen? (Usually less than we project).

I hope this helps. Feel free to get in touch for more information: victoria@integrityec.co.uk

Shield Pest Control’s Guide to Protecting Older Building from Pests

Shield Pest Control is one of London’s longest-running and highly-regarded pest control organisations. Here, the team outlines the pests they often encounter within older buildings and how these are dealt with and prevented moving forward.

Common Pests

When operating within an older building, you must be aware of the pests you could encounter due to the building's ageing infrastructure.

Rodents can make their way through small nooks, leading to damaged items and contributing to the spread of disease. Certain ant species can be attracted to decaying wood, as well as woodworms which can wreak havoc on the structural integrity of historic buildings. Cockroaches can also be found in dark and damper areas of

older buildings - these can be difficult to eradicate once they establish a presence.

Prevention of Pests

Prevention is key when it comes to pest control in older buildings, protecting your business from potential damage and avoiding the hefty cost of restoration. Your building should be regularly

inspected for gaps that pests could use to gain entry. These openings should then be sealed with appropriate materials to block out unwanted pests.

Any leaks should also be repaired and drainage systems should be in place while ensuring that you have proper ventilation in effect to keep moisture levels in check.

Early detection can prevent pest issues from escalating, so it is recommended that your business schedules regular pest inspections from professionals such as Shield Pest Control. These experts will use targeted treatments that are the least intrusive, effective and gentle on the building’s infrastructure. Shield Pest Control’s qualified technicians can be available quickly across the entirety of the South East.

The Growth Guarantee Scheme

It’s fair to say that like most Government backed funding schemes they frequently get rebranded, are never well publicised, never properly understood and surprise, surprise, never well utilised.

The Growth Guarantee Scheme is one of these. It has had more names than Liz Taylor and a lower public profile than a disgraced celebrity.

But, it shouldn’t because it is a really good scheme.

This scheme works by giving a lender a guarantee to support commercial mortgage lending, whether that be a business buying their own premises or an investor buying commercial property to let out. In fact, you can use it for almost any purpose. By having a guarantee from the Government, the lender can then agree deals that they would otherwise decline and offer lower interest rates for the lending they agree.

Let me challenge an assumption...

Always a dangerous thing to do! If you're like me then you're constantly being told that it's critical to use SEO and Social Media for lead generation. Why? Because all that activity will, apparently, bring in leads, 'free', from cold. Bob's your uncle. Turn up the volume? Pay for ads. And yes, some businesses do thrive through search results. Some do thrive through social media. But will yours?

Try this simple sanity test… How much would you benefit from a free high-street shop front? Loads? Maybe search is your strategy. How much would you benefit from free flyers pinned to notice boards? Loads? Maybe social media is your strategy.

Diddly Squat?

Well, then you have to actually talk to real people, in real life. Pick up the phone? Absolutely. But only when you know what to say, and

who to say it to.

But how do you discover? What engages people? What turns people off? Answer? Socialise. Chat. Build relationships. Talk about what you do (that's 'talk about', by the way. Not 'pitch'!). You'll soon find out if your story plays well.

gdb events are fantastic - frequent, brilliantly organised and welcoming - but I know many people find 'networking' a challenge!

If that's you, remember: First, it takes time. Expect the first couple of visits to be uncomfortable. But do come back for a third time - the difference will amaze you. True. Why? Ask me.

Second, forget your 'elevator pitch' (ugh). Nobody cares. Relax. Chat. Inquire. Listen. Enjoy. Listen some more. Be patient. The right conversation will happen in time.

Support for gdb Leaders: Diamond Leaders for Growth

Diamond Leaders for Growth was established over five years ago, specifically aimed at established business leaders seeking two things: expert advice and ideas and (most importantly), a community of peers.

Leading any business can be a solitary place so the DLG groups are specifically designed to be “safe spaces” in which leaders can both gain from the wisdom of real experts, both from within gdb and from outside, and to also have the opportunity to learn from one another about how contemporaries have tackled the often-common problems of their businesses. With expert facilitation, Diamond Leaders for Growth peer groups offer much more than passive business advice.

New members bring fresh ideas and perspectives and are very much welcome.

Our first Diamond Leaders for Growth group is led by Andrew Manley of Prolifient Ltd. Andrew brings extensive experience in running peer group programmes. His Diamond Leaders for Growth group is aimed particularly at MD/Owner level with a broad growth agenda, responsive to the needs and contributions of group members. Andrew is working with gdb to build the group, lead each meeting, and coordinate expert contributions.

expert facilitation, Diamond Leaders for Growth peer groups offer much more than passive business advice.

DLG members tend to be engaged with their groups for several years building friendships and common interest. That does not mean that new members are not welcome however: to the contrary, new members bring fresh ideas and perspectives and are very much welcome.

Full details of how to join DLG and a list of the benefits of being part of this programme can be seen on the gdb website Support tab, along with details of our valued group leaders, Andrew Manley and Steve Jebson. But what better way to explain the value than straight from DLG member themselves:

Quotes from some existing members:

y “….the one day every two months when I can step back and have a real think about my business and where I am going”.

y “….I love hearing from real experts on such a wide range of topics in an environment where we can discuss things in detail with a flexible agenda and no great time pressures”.

y “….My group have become real friends and I hold the dates of meetings as the opportunity to meet them and exchange stuff I would often not share even with my own team”.

y “….Invaluable. Asides from the expert inputs, I am always surprised at how much I get from just talking ideas and concerns over with other owners”.

Our second Diamond Leaders for Growth group is led by Steve Jebson. His group is aimed at MDs & Business Leaders looking to build their leadership skills and benefit from a wider network of business influencers. The meetings focus on inspiring the group with market-shaping speakers, helping develop the group’s business acumen and challenging themselves, and their business, to take the next steps in scaling and growing. Advice for tackling stress in your business

1. Introduce new training

New training initiatives could help your business at a number of levels. You could target training at line managers to help them look out for stress and respond appropriately.

2. Conduct a staff survey

Asking people directly about matters that concern them can provide heaps of useful information on which you can act, and a stress survey exploring the causes is no different. It may help to give them the option for it to be confidential, and you’re sure to be able to draw a line between positive pressure and negative stress.

3. Perform a stress risk assessment

You’re probably already familiar with performing risk assessments in your business. If you don’t yet do one for

stress this could be a useful exercise, perhaps following on from a staff survey. Given that so many millions of days are lost each year to stress, laying this groundwork is a great preventative measure to minimise the impact in your business.

4. Offer an employee assistance programme

We are strong advocates of offering an employee assistance programme (EAP) as part of a benefits package. It is a lowcost package per employee that offers expert helplines for a variety of issues employees could face, including legal issues, counselling and… stress.

5. Flexible working options

Flexible working is not right for every business and will not be a silver bullet for every case of stress, but it may be

The Importance of Good Feedback

The source of the odour can be found and overcome (it might be a dead mouse under the desk and the person you are speaking to has no sense of smell themselves – not on this occasion).

This is a difficult conversation for me to have with you but I feel you would want to know.

The recipient interpreted this as they were a subject of malicious gossip. Ultimately that case ended up in the employment tribunal and even though the employer won the case there was a lot of unpleasantness and expense that could have been avoided if the feedback had been delivered more effectively.

Mayo Wynne Baxter raises almost £7,000 for Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS)

Money raised by leading Sussex law firm Mayo

Wynne Baxter could help Air Ambulance Charity

Kent Surrey and Sussex (KSS) pay for four lifesaving blood transfusions which could assist in preventing a patient from bleeding to death at the scene of a critical accident.

The law firm has raised £6,914 for the charity in a year with a busy programme of events.

KSS is an independent lifesaving charity, which has provided world-leading pre-hospital emergency care whenever and wherever it’s needed, for more than 30 years. They must raise £18.8m per year to be able to continue their life saving work.

Mayo Wynne Baxter selected KSS as its charity partner in May 2023 in a two-year partnership which has included organising fundraisers and raising the charity’s profile.

Dean Orgill, chief executive partner at Mayo Wynne Baxter said: “This is a fantastic effort from the Mayo Wynne Baxter team and we’re so pleased to be able to support the lifesaving work of this important charity.

“Every year KSS responds to more than 3,300 incidents where they provide cutting edge pre-hospital emergency care which could make the difference between life or death. Last year alone KSS treated 155 patients with blood transfusions at the scene of an incident.

“In total 88 per cent of its income comes from donations, so businesses like ours raising money for its vital work really does count.

“We’re looking forward to raising more funds for KSS in the year to come and supporting a charity which touches the lives of the people our team serves across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.” The money the law firm has raised so far could also pay for more than 70 emergency anaesthetics, allowing the KSS crew to take control of a patient’s breathing. This procedure would normally only be administered under extreme clinical conditions in a hospital environment but is essential in giving patients the best possible chance of survival, the best recovery and long-term outcomes.

Mayo Wynne Baxter has already held dozens of activities to raise money and raise the charity’s profile since the partnership started in May last year, including a Seaford Parkrun takeover, a Rugby World Cup Sweepstake, a silent auction at the Mayo

The enthusiasm of the charity and social committees combined is infectious.

The firm has plenty of other fundraisers in the diary this year, including a summer party raffle, a summer Olympics and will even take part in the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing the three highest mountains of Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours.

KSS are also committed to preventing loss of life though a number of initiatives and a team from KSS will be attending the Mayo Wynne Baxter staff conference to provide CPR and defibrillator training for employees.

or in a patient’s home, they will then transport the patient directly to the most appropriate hospital for their needs, including the South East’s major trauma centres, continuing life-saving care whilst flying.

KSS recorded its busiest year in its history in 2023, when it responded to more than 3,300 incidents, an average of nine patients every day.

Kerry Campbell, Corporate Relations Officer at Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) said: “As a local community charity we are delighted that Mayo Wynne Baxter, a local business, is supporting KSS, their local air ambulance.

“It’s great to hear that everyone is getting involved in a variety of fundraisers, from bake sales to Christmas auctions, quiz nights to 10k runs. The enthusiasm of the charity and social committees combined is infectious.

“The money that Mayo Wynne Baxter has raised so far is invaluable in our fight to save more lives. It costs over £51k a day to run our lifesaving service and most of that is funded by the communities we serve, including businesses like Mayo Wynne Baxter.

“We look forward to celebrating our one-year anniversary with them and raising even more vital funds.”

10 for TMD

This year marks Taylor-Made Dreams’ 10th anniversary and we are proud of that. With the help of our local community, we have been able to support so many families, providing over 2,000 bucket list wishes and over 1,400 support services since 2014.

There are still many families in Sussex, Kent, Surrey & Essex who would like our help, so in recognition of our tenth year, we have developed a calendar of events to help make this our biggest fundraising year yet.

Alongside a Fire & Lego Walk (May), Sky dives (June), Charity Golf Day (June) and places on the Royal Parks Half Marathon (October), we also wanted to create a campaign that could encompass the whole year and allow people to fundraise the way they want to, when they want to. “10 for TMD” encourages supporters to be creative in the ways they can

fundraise for Taylor-Made Dreams, by doing things in tens. This could be 10 runs throughout the year, Donate £10 a month, 10 days without social media, 10 weeks without caffeine, a challenge over 10 months like learning an instrument or training for an event.

No matter how big or small your fundraiser is, as long as 10’s involved we’d love to hear about it!

Once you’ve decided what your chosen fundraiser will be, we’d love to have videos of you committing to your challenge so that we can promote your wonderful fundraising and make a 10th anniversary video of everyone that takes part.

Simply start your video with the words “I am doing 10 for TMD by…” and tell us your plans, you can send to us via direct message on socials or via the email below. If you think you’d be up

Taylor-Made Dreams

Taylor-Made Dreams enables children to achieve their dreams when time is so precious. The charity was founded in 2014 by Suzi Mitchell in memory of her son, Taylor. Having cared for Taylor whilst helping him create his own wish list, Suzi recognised the gap in charitable services for bucket list wishes for terminally ill children and for therapeutic, counselling and support services for the whole

family. To date the charity has provided over 2,000 bucket list wishes, as well as holistic therapy/ counselling sessions, travel grants, medical sheepskin fleeces, family portraits, individual makeover photoshoots, silver dragonfly keepsakes, sibling support service sessions and technology loans for families in Sussex, Kent and Surrey.

Verdant Financial Planning

We are a medium sized full independent financial planning firm that operates in the Sussex and Surrey area, providing advice to individuals, businesses, trustees and charities. We help our clients from birth to the grave and all the points along the way.

We are built around our clients and pride ourselves on integrity, clarity, professionalism and our team. We also aim to give back to our communities and local sports teams with charitable work sponsorship and fund raising.
