Gatwick Diamond Business is networking done well! With a great mix of people and businesses, it’s an excellent opportunity to expand your network and build valuable relationships.

What appealed to you about joining gdb?

We are excited to have joined Gatwick Diamond Business because of the valuable networking opportunities and the chance to collaborate with local likeminded companies We have ongoing projects in the area, and we look forward to assisting in the region’s development. As a company we are currently looking to open offices in the Crawley, Manor Royal area We hope to contribute to the local growth and build our presence as a recognised brand in the Southeast

What was the thing that surprised you about gdb?

I was surprised by the depth and breadth of the membership, as well as the variety of events offered The gdb team are incredibly helpful and friendly, and their communication around events is excellent I was also pleasantly surprised by how collaborative other members are, always eager to support and work together

What’s the biggest single thing you’ve got from being a member of gdb?

The biggest benefit we've gained from being a gdb member is the enhanced network of suppliers From connecting with Stef at Sales and Marketing Engineers who is handling all our marketing needs, to M&E consultants, Neuro Ninjas, window suppliers, scaffolding companies, and local property agents The network has been invaluable to our business

What difference has being a member of gdb made to your business?

Being a member of gdb has made a significant impact on our business In our industry, project conversion can be a slow burn, but we’ve made fantastic connections with enthusiastic and well-connected people. Just being around other business owners, regardless of whether their businesses align with ours, has been a motivating and inspiring factor, helping us motivate and inspire our own team

gdb puts on lots of different types of eventswhat’s your favourite?

I’ve enjoyed many of the events, including the members' meetings and, of course, a cooked breakfast at Crawley College However, I think the Re-Energise Conference in January has been my favourite so far I really enjoyed the four guest speakers, and I was so inspired that I’ve invited Andrew from Action Your Potential to come to our office and to visit our live construction sites to speak with our teams.

What’s different about gdb compared to other networking you do?

What sets gdb apart from other networking events is the friendly and familiar atmosphere The gdb team goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome, creating an environment where building connections feels natural and enjoyable It's a supportive community that truly values making their members feel at ease

What’s your top tip for getting the most out of networking?

Jump in with both feet Focus on what you can do to help others, and the rest will naturally follow Also, make sure your elevator pitch is clear and concise no matter how interested someone is to find out about you and your services, its often best to keep it brief and engaging!

Besides the events, what else do you get out of your gdb membership?

I have a fabulous team around me at Carnegie Group, but being a business owner can be a lonely space. Regularly speaking with other business owners and leaders in a friendly and familiar setting through gdb gives me the opportunity to seek advice on challenges I may be facing or simply have informal discussions about processes or strategies that others may have already experienced It’s this sense of community and shared knowledge that truly makes gdb invaluable to me and my business

Building Safety Act Successes

The Building Safety Act and the introduction of the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) have transformed the requirements for works on HighRisk Buildings (HRBs) These changes apply not only to new developments but also to remedial and repair works Building regulation applications must now be submitted and approved before any work begins, adding significant complexity to the process

Obtaining Gateway 2 approval, a key milestone under the new regulations, has proven challenging for many in the industry The strict requirements and extended approval periods have led to a low number of successful applications However, Focus Consulting has risen to this challenge, achieving Gateway 2 approval for two HRB remedial projects

The path to compliance is not without its difficulties. Extensive investigations, detailed documentation, and rigorous approval processes can create hurdles for many projects However, our proactive approach, attention to detail, and commitment to maintaining the "golden thread" of information have ensured a smooth process Both approved projects are now underway, progressing in full compliance with the new regulations, and our team is preparing for the next milestone: Gateway 3 approval

For those facing similar challenges, the lessons learnt from our journey underline the importance of early planning, strong communication, and a collaborative mindset Additionally, our expertise in project management and contract administration has been instrumental in guiding these projects successfully If you are planning refurbishment or repair projects on an HRB and require support with the application process, visit our website, get in touch and we can help advise you

Two pop-up creative spaces launch in Crawley this Spring

Creative Crawley's Spring Season is set to invigorate the town with two new temporary pop-up spaces supporting the creative industries in Crawley and offering opportunities for local residents to experience free creative events and activities on their doorstep The team are currently working hard to adapt the existing spaces to make them fit for their new, temporary purpose From April to June they will be open to the public

In collaboration with Theatre Centre, there will be an artist maker space for emerging and established creative professionals in West Green This cultural hub will be used as a place for them to make their work There will be five resident artists and other creatives will be able to book hot desks plus large and small studio spaces

In County Mall, a new flexible event and hang out space will be popping up on level one (opposite Primark), in partnership with AudioActive who will be running their workshops for young people there alongside Creative Crawley’s programme of free, creative events in the space, which can all be booked now via their website. The space will also be available to hire, including a greenhouse meeting room

The spaces are being funded by a place partnership grant from Arts Council England and a Shared Prosperity grant from UK Government, supported by Crawley Borough Council and the Towns Fund At the end of the test period, Creative Crawley will reflect on and share the learnings, testing whether there is an appetite in Crawley for these types of spaces and how the financial model for them might work creativecrawley com

Go the greener way for business

You can make a big difference to the environment by doing something as small as taking the train instead of the car A simple switch on your next business trip could be up to 12 times better for the environment than driving

Working with the Rail Delivery Group, we have calculated that journeys between London and 10 stations across the network easily accessible via Gatwick Express, Southern, and Thameslink offer significant carbon savings compared to driving:

Carbon Emission Savings (GTR train to London v Car)*:

Bedford - up to 4.4 times fewer emissions

Brighton - up to 7 4 times fewer emissions

East Croydon - up to 7 5 times fewer emissions

Gatwick - up to 9 4 times fewer emissions

Hove - up to 12 times fewer emissions

Huntingdon - up to 4 2 times fewer emissions

Peterborough - up to 3 5 times fewer emissions

South Croydon - up to 5 times fewer emissions

St Albans - up to 5 4 times fewer emissions

Stevenage - up to 8 7 times fewer emissions

This is the number of times difference between average rail and petrol/diesel car emissions, expressed in kgCO2e per person travelling

From Gatwick we can connect you to hundreds of locations across the south east and for your next business trip you could be going the greener way

Not only will this help support your businesses sustainability goals, taking the train will allow you time to work with free Wi-Fi, catch up with colleagues and get you there more relaxed

To book tickets with no fees, download the Southern app or go to southernrailway.com

This data has been developed by Rail Delivery Group – in partnership with Thrust Carbon, 3Squared, Black Box Partnerships and the wider rail industry –as part of the rail industry’s Green Travel Pledge https://www.gatwickexpress.com/

Many employers give their teams volunteering days as part of their corporate social strategy - but it can often be tricky to find a charity to use them with. Charities themselves can find it hard to accommodate a big team day - run by small teams themselves with limited resources and space, it can be hard to support and guide a visiting team without having an impact on their own productivity - but they often need help with specific technical or professional tasks and projects that they themselves might not have the skills to achieve

Professional skills can make a huge impact to a charity’s infrastructure and sustainability - helping them to focus on delivering the support our local community needs

volunteering hours?

It could be Finance, Marketing, or Data Analysis, HR and Policy Writing... the list is endless - but for smaller local charities like Ten Little Toes Baby Bank, giving your expertise and time can be a real game changer You could really make a difference to the work we do, giving us the time and scope to expand our reach and help more families in need.

If you would like to be part of our journey, and you have volunteering hours to use in 2025, please reach out and see if your professional skills would make a difference You can get in touch with Ten Little Toes on thehub@tenlittletoesbabybank org and to find out more about other charities in the gdb Charities network take a look at the members directory

Beat the Bank: How Overpaying Pays Off Big

Overpaying a mortgage or loan can bring significant financial and emotional benefits By making additional payments beyond the required monthly amount, borrowers can significantly reduce both the loan term and the total interest paid.

One of the most appealing advantages is the potential to save thousands in interest For instance, overpaying even a modest amount each month can substantially reduce the interest accrued over the loan's lifespan.

On a £500,000 mortgage over 20 years at 6% interest, overpaying by £200 monthly would save you £39,000 in interest and reduce your loan term by 2 years.

It’s all about compound interest Einstein said; Compound interest is the eighth

wonder of the world He who understands it, earns it; he who doesn't, pays it”

“Because extra payments are usually applied directly to the principal, they immediately reduce the base amount on which interest is calculated

This isn’t about reinventing the theory of relativity, merely that a modest overpayment can make a huge difference In most mortgage agreements, commercial or residential, there is an allowance to overpay This is usually up to 10% per annum without any penalty.

Overpaying also builds equity faster This can provide peace of mind, particularly during uncertain economic times

It doesn't mean overpaying is right for everyone, there are always other financial, business or life considerations

However, it is a consideration that you should give time for. Most lenders never tell you the difference an overpayment can make, so we will One small overpayment for man, one giant leap for You get the gist

Are you or a family member a Tenant or Landlord?

The Renters' Rights Bill (RRB) is currently making its way through the House of Lords and is predicted to become law this year, the Bill has been described as one of the most transformative pieces of legislation

Designed to address concerns over unsafe housing and balance the power between tenants and landlords,

the Bill aims to offer tenants greater security while ensuring landlords meet new standards for landlords and tenants in decades

Abolition of Section 21 so called “No-Fault” evictions. Introduction of Periodic Tenancies and removal of Fixed Term Tenancies

New Grounds for Possession and Extended Notice Periods

Creation of the Private Rented Sector Ombudsman.

Mandatory registration on the Private Rented Sector Database Stricter rules around rent increases and their implementation

Prohibition of rental bidding

Decent Homes Standard & Awaab’s Law enforcement. Expansion of Rent Repayment

Orders with enhanced tenant protections

Pet ownership rights for tenants

Stronger penalties and fines for noncompliance

What should Landlords do?

To stay ahead of the curve and protect investments, landlords must be proactive in understanding these changes and taking steps to ensure compliance The best way to do this is by instructing an experienced, strong, Propertymark qualified team of letting experts, like Knights Estate Agents. The majority of Letting Agents are NOT qualified, and under the RRB correct guidance will become more important than ever

If you are a Landlord or a Tenant and you’re worried about the Renters Rights Bill, please contact us and we will be happy to answer your questions

New report highlights the key talent challenges facing smaller organisations

The Electronic Travel Authorisation If you don’t have the right people in place, solving your organisational challenges gets even harder. This is particularly true in professional services, where your people are your greatest asset

These challenges start with finding new talent In Nurturing and Retaining Talent, a recent survey by Helen Tuddenham Consulting, over two-thirds of respondents said they struggled to recruit suitable candidates

A new report, ‘Building a Stronger Future: Using Executive Coaching to Build and Nurture Talent in Smaller Organisations,’ discusses the survey's findings, supplemented by further research

urther highlights include:

● 61% of survey respondents said that they felt that their staff didn't have the right skills for the current or future needs of the business.

● 44% of firms that had used executive coaching saw increased profitability Not one respondent said that they had not seen any benefits

● Around half the survey participants had not used executive coaching or used it very infrequently, citing cost, expected return on investment and whether it would work in smaller organisations

● Research supports the argument that executive coaching is versatile and can address many organisational and talent issues. These include improving leadership skills, impact and influence, strategic thinking, confidence, and self-awareness It can be particularly beneficial to help people transition into new roles

● The cost of ineffective leaders can be significant - both financially and in terms of low morale and disengaged staff As costly, but perhaps under the radar, is the cost of leaders not reaching their full potential

Although the research was conducted specifically in the professional services sector, the

report will be relevant to any HR or businessleaderswonderinghowtheycan overcome business challenges by leveraging their team's leadership capabilities

Meeting Water Neutrality Requirements

Since September 2021, all new developments within the Sussex North Water Supply Zone are requiredbyNaturalEnglandtomeet waterneutralitystandardssotheydo not add strain to local water resources. The SNWSZ covers Crawley, Horsham, Steyning, and west to Petersfield While most businessesinCrawley’sManorRoyal Business District face these requirements, the eastern half is outsidethezone

Key strategies to help businesses meetwaterneutrality?

1.StartPlanningEarly Engageaspecialistwaterconsultant for necessary water neutrality calculations, which must be submitted to Planning These are verifiedbyathird-partyconsultant beforebeingsenttoNaturalEngland. The review process can delay the planningdecisionbyseveralmonths

2.

Assess Existing Water Usage

Water neutrality is based on comparing current water consumption with proposed usage The more wasteful the existing setup, the more scope there is for efficiency improvements. Two years of water bills are required for accurate calculations; without them, conservative assumptions may be used

3. Register with Your Water Supplier

Some businesses are unaware they’re not fully registered with their supplier, which can complicate water neutrality calculations Without proof of existing water usage, calculations may assume zero usage, negatively impacting the process

3 Water Efficiency Measures

After calculations, upgrading water fittings to efficient models is the next step. If this doesn’t suffice, consider rainwater harvesting for non-potable uses like toilet flushing

4.Offset Water Usage

If on-site savings aren’t enough, properties can be legally tied together

to transfer water savings These arrangements must be secured throughaS106legalagreement.

Does Copilot learn over time?

Having taken the world by storm over the past couple of years, every company wants to integrate AI into their business. Within this paradigm, Microsoft Copilot is a versatile and potent assistant that could be the perfect tool to meet your business needs However, this model is complex and intricate

How does Copilot work?

Type in a prompt and Copilot will answer. However, its answers are limited to the training data it is fed This process is complex and takes time to ensure responses are both accurate and helpful

Does Copilot learn and improve over time?

Copilot is constantly evolving and learning, although the knowledge cutoff for the free version of Copilot was April 2023 However, this is constantly changing with new updates and innovations

What data does Copilot have access to?

The knowledge cut-off for Copilot is April 2023, meaning that its training data is all from before that date. However, Microsoft Copilot can also search using Bing and extrapolate data from the internet through the browser

What are the limitations of Copilot?

All AI has limitations and Copilot is no exception. Here are the main ones:

·It can only generate text based on the data it can access

The text generated can sometimes be factually incorrect

Text can be repetitive

Due to the large dataset, Copilot can be biased.

·It has file size, word, thread size limitations within Microsoft 365

Copilot’s scope means that it can only search in specific places

Can Copilot be customised for specific business needs?

gdb Re-Energise Conference 2025

The room was buzzing and full of positivity as gdb’s Re-Energise Conference returned to Stanhill Court on the 23rd January. With a packed audience and a dynamic lineup of speakers, the event set the tone for an inspiring and forward-thinking year ahead

John Young, former BBC Southeast Today presenter and reporter, once again brought his signature professionalism and warmth as our Compere Our guest speakers each offered unique insights, leaving attendees motivated and ready to take on 2025

Kicking things off, Andrew Wright from Action Your Potential delivered a fascinating session on the neuroscience behind change He explained how training the brain can create positive habits, enhancing both mental and physical well-being - a powerful takeaway for both personal and professional growth.

Next, Bud Johnston from BOXLESS urged us to think beyond outdated box-ticking exercises and instead embrace future-focused decision-making He highlighted the importance of collaboration, amplifying younger voices, and ensuring accountability not just to shareholders but to society as a whole

Karen Dobres of Lewes Football Club then took the stage to share her experience as an “outsider in football”. She reframed imposter syndrome, arguing that it’s not a personal flaw but often the result of an unwelcoming environment

Her talk served as a powerful reminder for businesses to focus on creating welcoming environments where everyone can thrive

Closing the speaker lineup, Gary Peters from Love Local Jobs delivered an honest and heartfelt talk, reminding us that fulfilment comes from supporting one another, embracing vulnerability and daring to follow our passions With humour and authenticity, he shared stories from his journey into business, including a memorable encounter with Harry Redknapp and his 16-minute sting playing for West Ham!

It was fantastic to return to Stanhill Court and kick off the year with such inspiration A huge thank you to our Event Sponsors: BOXLESS, Carnegie Group, and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and to our Headline Sponsor, Richard Place Dobson, for making this event possible

Are you ready for the new right to neonatal care leave?

Managingthepracticalitiesandthe emotionsinvolvedwhenateam memberhasaprematureorsickbaby canbeverychallengingindeedWill newlawsontherighttoneonatal careleaveprovidesomemuchneededassistance? Whythenewright?

Subject to final parliamentary approval, inrelationtobabiesborn onorafter6April2025,parentswill nowhavethestatutoryrighttotime offworkiftheirchildrequires neonatal care As Government Minister,JustinMadders, putsit:

“Parents of children in neonatal care have more than enough to worry about without being concerned about how much annual leave they have left or whether they’ll be able to make ends meet.”

Exactly what are we talking about?

Under the new laws, all employees from their first day of employment will have the right to take up to 12 weeks’ leave if:

Their baby has been admitted into neonatal care within 28 days of their birth; and 1

They are in hospital for a continuous period of at least 7 full days 2.

Employees on neonatal care leave will not be entitled to their normal salary, however, they may be entitled to receive statutory neonatal care pay (£187.18 per week, or 90% of average weekly earnings), if they satisfy certain minimum service and earnings requirements

It will also be unlawful to subject employees to any other detriment

What now?

Employers should note that if an employee is dismissed because they take (or seek to take) neonatal care leave, the dismissal will be automatically unfair

Employers should be proactively reviewing their policies and procedures to make sure they are ready for the new laws

The power of showing up

Consistency is key to building strong relationships and establishing yourself as a reliable and trustworthy business contact You know that, right? But did you know that successful networking also takes time?

When you are consistent in attending networking events, you're more likely to be remembered and thought of when opportunities arise Why the reminder? Research has shown that less than half of those who start networking keep it up So, if your goal this year is to build your connections, it is crucial to remember that consistency is key

Engaging with connections on a regular basis ensures you are a familiar face Simply showing up to a monthly event a couple of times a year doesn’t demonstrate commitment There truly is power in simply turning up!

While you are building new connections, be persistent but also patient And think about the bigger picture, not just yourself Ask yourself how you can help the person in front of you

If you meet someone who is nervous, why not offer to take them to a few networking events? You’d be amazed how much someone can learn from shadowing

I helped someone in this way and a few months later saw them at one of my business shows, confident and smilingand quite happy to be networking

I recently met someone at a networking event who said he had attended several trade shows, introduced himself to the headline sponsor at one of them - and ended up bagging £250,000 worth of business!

Consistent engagement within a networking group or at a regular event can ensure you stay ‘top of mind’ What does that mean? Think of not just new leads and referrals but collaborations and partnerships

Networking is good for business - but only if you are reliable and put the effort in mike@brightonandhovebusinessshow.uk

New Development Opportunities within the Gatwick Diamond

The end of 2024 brought significant changes to planning policy; the rollout of the new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) has widened the scope of available, acceptable and developable land through the classification of parts of the Green Belt as Grey Belt DHA have been observing these changes in action throughout the first couple of months of 2025 - it is fast becoming clear that the new policy has opened up significant new opportunities on Grey Belt land, previously thought as ‘untouchable’ inplanningterms

Previously, schemes on Green Belt land always needed to make a very special circumstances case to be considered for most types of development Whilst that is still the caseinmanycircumstances,

the prospects are much better now where land can be shown to be ‘Grey Belt’. This includes previously developed land and/or any land which meets other tests, avoiding unrestricted sprawl of large built-up areas, the merging of towns and/or causing harm to historic towns

What does this mean for the Gatwick Diamond? DHA expect to see an overall increase in development applications on Green Belt land in which the definition can be met; this could mean in the coming years we will see a focus of development within the north of the Gatwick Diamond. DHA have already seen numerous refused schemes be turned round at appeal using the DHA have already seen numerous refused schemes be turned round at appeal using the Grey-belt definition to

CV Lies and Criminal Checks

One in three new hires fail at work according to CIPD magazine Personnel Today What’s going wrong? This article shares a few more vital statistics identifying a significant issue affecting anyone hiring permanent, part time or subcontracted support staff Other surveys of the employment market by HR Review show a startling decline in CV accuracy and Linkedin biographies.

Bad leavers fired by employers almost never disclose past conflicts or disciplinaries Such moves are framed with positive descriptions to develop new skills, improve pay or seek extra benefits Past employers will rarely describe real reasons for dismissal in fear of a discrimination claim

28% of job seekers anonymously admit to changing dates to hide an employment gap 93% of those who lied were not caught and almost half secured interviews.

55% enhance their past job roles to meet advertised requirements, fabricating achievements and overstating their scope of work and remuneration The results are often found during probationary periods when damage within teams, clients and suppliers may be too late to recover

My own professionally certified training in enhanced personnel background security checking has identified convicted criminals with unspent convictions obtaining senior positions of responsibility as managers and contractors.

Leaders for Growth – Growing Again

Founded by gdb previous Chair, Jeff Downs, Leaders for Growth is the forum in which established Business Leaders can come together to share ideas, problems and solutions in a safe space

gdb leaders meet six times per year –three times for a morning problem sharing and solving session and on three times a year with the addition of an expert speaker imparting wisdom on a specific business area with the group

Andrew Manley, who chairs one of the longer standing group, shares a long career in both large and small businesses as a Director and adviser and is also on the mentoring panel at London Business School, sees gdb Leaders fulfilling a particular need.

“Running a small or medium sized business is lonely place” says Andrew, “you may be big enough to afford a part time experienced advisor or Non-Executive Director, but even then the value of impartial

and experienced advice is invaluable. I see Leaders as almost akin to having your own board; you can share issues and ideas I am surprised at how often someone else in the group has seen the same issue and can offer personal advice or, if not, knows someone who can ”

Its not a group for sole entrepreneurs but more focussed for leaders who have stepped beyond the pain of early start up and who have issues emerging from developing teams, more sophisticated marketing plans and operational issues

“What I like about the group is that we meet under strict rules of

confidentiality

which means that the discussions can be quite intense and I like the fact that people are so supportive of one another” says Andrew.

In one case an individual had been given a 5 year prison sentence for a £2 million fraud and a ten year ban from Company Directorships His career included financial and business consultancy for charities and government bodies What does a basic criminal background record check involve? The UK Gov Disclosure and Barring Service now gives online applicants a same day report emailed to applicants and employers showing unspent criminal records and police records of cautions, reprimands and warnings for just £21.50. Cautions may include any offence not taken to court due to insufficient evidence That may include battery, stalking, theft, drug and drink related offences Can you afford NOT to ask for this simple fast check? You can view mine here

For more information email Clive@consult-smp com

Andrew works with Steve Jebson and they are now looking to reestablish the second group which was temporarily wound down last year Following some good marketing they are expecting the second group to take off by mid-year – if you are interested in joining, contact Andrew Manley or Steve Jebson or visit

Kindness is the Word!

‘Kindness’ is the Children’s Word of the Year 2024 (survey by Oxford University Press) It is also one of my favourite words, not just because of what it means, but where it comes from In effect, kindness is about treating others as kindred as if they are one of your kin… that the other person is one of ‘us’ not one of ‘them’ Kindness is inclusive

Kindness is an expression of compassion and empathy,

but it is not about cotton wool wrapping, ‘fixing people’ or trying to step in and take responsibility for someone else’s feelings, experience, life or world We cannot always stop other people from getting stressed or failing

Kindness is about helping someone to be resilient and bounce back rather than trying to prevent them ever having to deal with tough situations. Provide the help they need/request, of course, but without taking over completely Let us not disempower others (i e ‘killing them with kindness’) Please note this is a lesson I continually have to learn in life!

What does showing kindness in networking look like? Here are some examples:

1 Listening to someone (without immediately trying to solve their problem),

2.Helping solve a problem if asked (i.e. permission given),

3 Giving constructive, practical feedback when requested,

4.Recommending or introducing someone to others,

5 Speaking only positive stuff about others,

6 Warning someone about a risk or danger (even if this clashes with point 5),

7.Smiling and greeting folks as warmly as if they are old friends,

8 Welcoming folks you have not met before as if they are new friends,

9 Backing off and giving someone space if they need it,

10 Getting them a tea/coffee (or at least offering to).

Be kind to others and be kind to yourself!

Want a bit more kindness in your workplace?

Asset Protection Trusts: A Costly Illusion? Unravelling the Pitfalls.

“Asset Protection Trusts” – the pitfalls

Our specialist Private Client team have come across many clients who have received advice from third party advisors and consequently already prepared trusts referred to as Asset Protection Trusts (or similar) Often costing thousands of pounds to set up, many clients will have transferred their property, savings and investments into the trust itself The clients are referred to as the settlors of the trust

A large number of these clients do not appreciate they no longer legally own those assets – they have given them to the trustees Even if the settlors are also the trustees, they do not own the assets personally and they have lost the ability to use the assets in any way they wish to

The most common type of trust we see in this scenario is discretionary trusts. The trustees have absolute discretion to determine how the trust assets are used or distributed amongst the beneficiaries including when and how much, if any

Are there Inheritance Tax benefits?

Subject to some provisos, if the value of the assets transferred into the trust by any one settlor is less than the current Nil Rate Band of £325,000 there would be no immediate charge to Inheritance Tax but settlors should keep accurate records as their executors might need to know about these transactions many years later for establishing the Inheritance Tax liability on the client’s death There could be immediate Capital Gains Tax implications if advice isn’t sought beforehand too

It is quite common for the settlors to continue living in their property without paying rent to the trustees or to receive dividends paid on the investments which are now owned by the trustees. By doing so, they have retained a benefit in the asset. A gift whereby a benefit is retained is called a Gift with Reservation of Benefit (GROB) rules for Inheritance Tax purposes and so the value of the property will still be treated as part of the settlor’s estate on their death regardless of how long ago the gift was made.

Despite it often being the case that the settlors’ adult children are the only beneficiaries of the trust, the settlors’ executors will have lost the ability to claim the Residence Nil Rate Band on the settlor’s death despite the value of the property being aggregated with their estate for Inheritance Tax purposes because of the GROB rules

Overall, therefore, creating trusts of this nature can often have no benefits for Inheritance Tax purposes unless stringent conditions are met and instead can be quite detrimental so caution must be taken

Matt Parr

Despite it often being the case that the settlors’ adult children are the only beneficiaries of the trust, the settlors’ executors will have lost the ability to claim the Residence Nil Rate Band on the settlor’s death despite the value of the property being aggregated with their estate for Inheritance Tax purposes because of the GROB rules

Overall, therefore, creating trusts of this nature can often have no benefits for Inheritance Tax purposes unless stringent conditions are met and instead can be quite detrimental so caution must be taken.

Are trusts effective at protecting assets from being used to pay care fees?

If an asset has been given away in order to deprive oneself of that asset to avoid it being financially assessed for care fees, this might be considered a deliberate deprivation of assets In this case, the Local Authority can assess the settlor as if they still own the asset in question and the gift won’t be effective, regardless of how long ago the gift was

Unless there are legitimate tax savings or other overwhelming reasons to give assets away, such as the need to assist a vulnerable child to live securely, why else would one give away assets other than to avoid them being assessed for care fees? This is the case particularly as clients get older and the possibility of them requiring care becomes a more realistic prospect

Consequently, these types of gifts do not work for the purpose of protecting the assets from care fees most of the time

At least my executors won’t need to obtain a Grant of Probate on my death.

Sometimes executors need to obtain a Grant of Probate to deal with the sale or transfer of assets that once belonged to the deceased

If the deceased no longer owned these types of assets because they had given them away in their lifetime, it stands to reason that the executors won’t need to obtain a Grant of Probate to deal with them

Obtaining a Grant of Probate can be a relatively straightforward process and advice can be sought at the time which can make this even easier. Obtaining a Grant of Probate can cost as little as the Probate Registry fee itself which is currently £300

Avoiding the need for executors to obtain a Grant of Probate is very rarely a good enough reason in itself to create one of these trusts.

In conclusion, there are still scenarios in which gifting assets to a trust during your lifetime can be effective at reducing tax burdens and as a way of filtering assets down to the future generations, but advice should be sought before anything is agreed and put in writing as it is often very difficult to undo what has already been done

What can industries do better to engage the next generation of talent?

Businesses’ futures hinge on attracting and retaining the right talent But how can niche and lesserknown industries appeal to the next generation? Employers can start by understanding the perceptions and aspirations of school leavers and university graduates What do they want from a job; what are their longterm goals; and how do they view different industries?

Last year, The Fragrance Foundation UK and jobseekers’ app ERIC collaborated with Dr Sarah Otner from the University of Sussex Business School to explore these questions. Dr Otner, an Associate Professor of Innovation Management, led a survey and conducted interviews that together reached hundreds of 14–16-year-olds across the UK The research revealed that while many British teenagers have clear ideas about what makes a "good job" – such as reputation, challenge, good pay, work/life balance, and passion – few have access to effective careers guidance at school

Based on their findings, Otner and her team made several recommendations for improving industry talent pipelines:

1) Schools, not socials: Although many students use social media apps

like TikTok for information, they doubt their reliability. The research showed a strongdesireforin-personschools-based engagement from industries to demonstratewhattheydoandhowtoget started.

2)Beproactive:Industriesshouldnotwait forschoolstoreachoutForexample,The ConstructionIndustryTrainingBoardhas proactively worked to change outdated stereotypes and highlight workplace experience Theprogrammewaspraised byinterviewees.

3) Be honest and detailed: Industries should provide clear and detailed descriptions of a typical workday The Royal Opera House, for instance, showcasesavarietyofcareeroptionson YouTube, fromdancechoreographersto securityofficers

Pentagon makes major change to production capacity

Steady increase in production demand throughout 2024 and into 2025 has led Pentagon to make a notable change to their production capacity For over 20 years the UK based Plastic Injection Moulder have operated across a two-shift pattern with the factory operating 16 hours a day but from early February capacity is being extended across 24 hours

This is a huge milestone in their rich 53-year history of trading, the increased demand is being driven by the medical (non-clean room moulding) and aerospace sectors which continue to grow at pace Pentagon are technical injection moulders and the components that are manufactured on site are often part of larger assemblies, and commonly from engineering grades of thermoplastics

The business has always prided itself on the level of technical expertise that they offer customers and those who follow Pentagon’s business journey may recall the exciting news of their growing team of Setter Technicians back in 2024, undertaken to support the next step of growth for the business that we are seeing today and ensure the high standard of technical expertise across all three shifts

The third production shift will help to ensure that high volume medical mouldings continue to meet increasing customer demand while opening capacity on larger presses for new business going forward The shift will be overseen by one of the groups longest serving employees who has been with the organisation since infancy

The group are committed to continuing to deliver exceptional

service to their loyal and growing customer base and are excited to be able to offer increased production capacity going forward If Pentagon sound like a forward-thinking organisation that you would like to work with for your plastic injection moulding requirements their team of experts looks forward to speaking with you.

How Salary Sacrifice can offset rising employers’ National Insurance costs

In October 2024, Rachel Reeves announced a Budget decision to increase employer Class 1 national insurance contributions and lower the threshold at which these become payable

From April 2025, employers must pay 15% (currently 13 8%) on employee earnings exceeding £5,000 (currently £9,100) Together, these changes will substantially increase staff costs. While the employment allowance threshold will increase to £10,500, offering some relief for employers, most will need to either absorb or pass on this cost through price increases s there a way to mitigate some of this cost?

Yes, there is.

By reducing an employee's salary in exchange for pension contributions, both the employer and employee benefit from lower National

Iwhile maintaining the same level of pensioncontributions Thisprocessis referred to as 'salary sacrifice' or 'salaryexchange'

Consider an employee with a salary of £30,000 on a basic tax code, with pension contributions of 300% from the employer and 500% from the employee under a net pay arrangement

In this example, the employer saves £225inNationalInsurancecosts,and

the employee enjoys a £120 per year increaseintake-homepay

Inthisexample,theemployersaves£225 in National Insurance costs, and the employee enjoys a £120 per year increaseintake-homepay

Salary Exchange is a long-established conceptusedinvariousways, thatreally shows its worth in relation to pensions

To work correctly, it should become a permanent change in the employee’s termsandconditionsofemployment

Midnight and Sussex Wildlife Trust partner to support marine rewilding

Midnight Communications and Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) are collaborating to raise awareness of the charity’s pioneering marine rewilding project along the Sussex coast.

The Sussex Kelp Recovery Project (SKRP), delivered by Sussex Wildlife Trust and its partners, is the UK’s largestmarinerewildinginitiativeand aims to restore 200 square kilometres of lost underwater kelp forestsfromRyetoSelsey Kelp, large brown seaweed found along rocky shores, form dense underwater forests and are essential to maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, but are under serious threat, with the vast majority having disappeared in Sussex by the mid1980s

Through the pro bono partnership, digital PR agency Midnight is delivering media training, strategic consultancy and media relations to drive awareness of the importance of kelp to our local marine habitats The campaignbeginswiththepromotion

Tpromotion of Sussex Wildlife Trust’s first international Kelp Summit in April, where scientists and researchers will come together to share learnings at the University of Sussex.

Alex Hankinson, joint managing director at Midnight, said: “We’ve partnered with Sussex Wildlife Trust to help support our local slice of our beautiful oceans Everyone knows how vital coral reefs are to our marine ecosystem, but the same can’t be said of kelp forests We want to help change that, and to encourage businesses and the local community to get involved ”

The rewilding of the Sussex seabed is seeing early signs of success following the landmark Sussex Nearshore Trawling Byelaw in 2021, which created one of the largest trawling prohibited areas in the UK. Mussel beds are now recovering – the first stage in the process of marine rewilding –as well as the return of black bream and lobsters

Louise Colbran, fundraising and partnerships officer, Sussex Wildlife Trust added: “Kelp was once abundant along our coasts, supporting the marine environment and local fisheries We want to rebuild what was lost and create a thriving marine environment for the future This partnership with Midnight will help us to spread the word.”

Beachcombers out walking after a storm or high winds are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for kelp - look out for large, leathery brown seaweed It’s a sign our seas are starting to recover
