gdb Diamond Experts Conference 2024
Help to Grow: Management training returns to Crawley
Sponsored by
Welcome!
Welcome to the July/August Diamond Magazine, full as always of great news stories and updates from you, our valued gdb members!
As I write we are approaching a General Election and, whatever your thoughts are regarding the results, it is my hope that we can start letting go of some of the uncertainty of the past few months, and the effects of any changes moving forwards will be positive for you and your business.
Talking of positive change, I’d like to draw your attention to pages 20-21 where you can read how Crawley's £21.1 million Towns Fund is set to transform the local economy.
Our front cover this edition is
dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of our organisation, with plans to launch a new initiative to extend our reach and create a more inclusive business community to be revealed later this year!
On page 3, our Member Spotlight shines on Nick Swan, Managing Director of Love Water. As you can tell from Nicks photo, he is a larger-than-life character with a great sense of humour, and he’s on a positive mission to ensure we all stay healthy and hydrated.
A big thank you goes to the Gatwick School for their sponsorship of this edition of Diamond. Take a look at page 6 to find out ways in which you can engage with them to help inspire their students and our workforce of the future.
Focussing on the future, the Gatwick Diamond region’s unique selling points and investment potential were showcased at UKREiiF recently, with a delegation led by Gatwick Diamond Initiative. Page 7 summarises the collaborative commitment to driving future growth in our region.
And another showcase designed to highlight the diverse strengths of the Gatwick Diamond business community, bringing businesses from across the region together to learn and network, is the Diamond Experts conference. You can read about this year’s conference on page 11.
Last month our AGM moved back to June to bring it back in line with our fiscal year and I’m thrilled to report that a Special Resolution to adopt a new set of Articles of Association (rules that govern the way we operate the organisation)
was passed unanimously! Huge thanks to Council Member Andrew Manley for being the driving force behind this process of change, and to Mayo Wynne Baxter for going over and above with their support. You can see a copy of the new Articles here
At the AGM we welcomed some new and exciting additions to the gdb Council. We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of them and our existing council members who together bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to benefit gdb and gdb members. You can see our Elected Council Members on our website, with the addition of our co-opted members coming soon.
Our thanks as always to Creative Pod for the design of Diamond, and to all of you who have contributed your news, inspiring stories and advice to this edition.
And finally from me, this month sees us bid a fond farewell to Jeff Downs following many years as a member, Council Member, Chairman and Director of gdb. Jeff has been amazingly supportive and the source of much laughter during his time with us and it goes without saying that we will all miss him hugely. I am sure you will all join me and the gdb Team in wishing Jeff an exciting and enjoyable next chapter as he looks forward to the arrival of his granddaughters.
Happy reading and I wish you all a wonderful Summer!
Sally Brown General Manager
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
1. What appealed to you about joining gdb?
Many networking organisations that insist (or put "gentle" pressure!) on regular attendance as part of membership. With gdb you just go to the events that suit you when they suit you, and that suits me!
2. What was the thing that surprised you about gdb?
How over the years it has grown - While some members may not renew, I'm always surprised by the number of new members announced at each monthly meeting. It's clear there's consistently a net gain in membership.
3. What’s the biggest single thing you’ve got from being a member of gdb?
Meeting and getting to know good people that have become suppliers to Love Water, and some in turn have become customers of Love Water!
4. What difference has being a member of gdb made to your business?
It's helped create a ‘local’ awareness of Love Water I think, and it appears
Name: Nick Swan
Business name: Love Water
Description: Providers of drinking water systems for businesses and homes, including Bottled Water Dispensers, Mains Fed Water Dispensers and Filter Taps.
“gdb creates varied and professional events that make the membership worth every penny.”
that it has helped us to become the ‘go to’ company if a member requires a drinking water system for their home or business.
5. gdb puts on lots of different types of events - what’s your favourite? When I can make it and I feel like spoiling myself (!), I love attending the Networking at Ease events. I generally try to avoid having a big lunch during Monday to Friday, so this is my opportunity to let it go! Always nice food, and it's a great relaxed way to spend 10 minutes or so per course with a group of around six people, getting to know them over a few sips of wine!
6. What’s different about gdb compared to other networking you do?
gdb is more long term relationship building, which I like. If I can get to two or three events a month, I see regular faces that I slowly get to know more over time. It enables deeper conversations about them, their business activity and their life in general. I think that over the few years of being with gdb I have made a number of great business relationships, and if I need a particular product or service at
any time in the future, I would think of a gdb member first.
7. What’s your top tip for getting the most out of networking?
Be the first to ask about them, their business and show genuine interest. Ask a question and try to ask a further question from their answer. A question I often ask early on, as it often intrigues me, is "How did you come by your business name?" - Always a good one for getting someone to talk.
8. Besides the events, what else do you get out of your gdb membership? Since the excellent upgrade of the gdb website, the Love Water profile page is an ongoing reference to the products and services we offer. And of course, the other thing I get from gdb membership, is the pleasure of seeing how polite, well organised, professional and enthusiastic the gdb team are!.....It must be the water they are drinking???!

Why Businesses Need A Coach
At the June Crawley Business Breakfast, I spoke on the topic ‘Why Businesses Need A Coach’. As an Executive Coach, I make businesses more profitable by helping their senior team be happier
and more productive at work.
Coaching provides a regular, safe, completely confidential space to explore what is challenging you (or your team members) and make good decisions.
If you have never considered providing Coaching for your senior leaders, or indeed if you have not experienced the power of coaching personally, you may be sceptical about the business benefits and typical ROI. I believe that the benefits are typically:
Happier Employees
Coaching results in clearer career goals, improved confidence and more engaged, motivated and committed employees.
More productive
Coaching improves communication
skills, relationships with clients and stakeholders, conflict management, clearer boundaries, improved leadership and so much more!
More profitable
Happier and more productive employees make better business decisions which leads to increased profitability and retention.
The ROI is unquestionable. In a well-known ICF Report, over 86% of companies reported that they recouped their investment in coaching and more. Who in your team would benefit from dedicated 1:1 coaching support at this point in their career? And how would this benefit your business? Message me to explore how I can support you and your team on kerry@kerryjonescoaching.com
Strengthening Bonds: Richard Place Dobson's Team Day at The Hawth
Richard Place Dobson (RPD) recently organised a team day at The Hawth to reinforce their commitment to team growth and continuous improvement. This event blended learning, reflection, and fun, offering an excellent opportunity for the entire team to engage in meaningful activities.
The day began with an icebreaker where team members found as many similarities as possible with their colleagues. This simple activity improved camaraderie and set a positive tone for the day. Following this, the leadership team presented the latest company updates, sharing insights into RPD's evolution, including new strategies and initiatives.
A significant part of the morning focused on client feedback, hearing firsthand what clients appreciate and where improvements are needed. This session allowed the team to reflect on their services and adapt to better meet client needs.
The afternoon was entertaining, starting with exercises led by Joe Cheal from Imaginarium. These activities focused on identifying personality types,
crucial for effective communication and teamwork. Joe guided the team through an analysis of opposite personality traits, highlighting what makes these traits beneficial or challenging for clients. This exercise aimed to improve the understanding and management of different personality types within the workforce.
The team participated in various teambuilding exercises. These activities, designed to strengthen the group and provide light-hearted relief, were about having fun and building a more cohesive team.
The team day at The Hawth was a testament to RPD's core values:

Gatwick School Earns "Good" Rating from Ofsted
When you step into The Gatwick
School
and become part of the TGS family, education truly comes alive!
We are a truly unique institution, providing students with a culture that offers more chances and, consequently, more choices for their future. As an all-through school, we are one of only 109 state schools in the country that educate children from the age of 4 all the way to 16. This allows us to be part of not just their educational journey but also their journey through childhood into young adulthood.
At The Gatwick School, we believe in creating a culture founded on nurture and ambition. While we operate as two small schools, we come together as one big family. This structure allows us to offer students a phenomenal education by pooling our expertise and experience, ensuring a continuity of learning that helps students learn more, know more, and remember more.
Our unique setting enables students to build lasting relationships with staff, develop their knowledge through our all-through curriculum model, and benefit from phase-specific expertise. They also enjoy a broad range of opportunities, such as specialist classrooms and mentoring programs, which are only possible in a setting like ours.
Quality of Education
Our teachers have been praised for their ‘clarity and precision’, ‘expert subject knowledge’, and effective teaching methods. This is helping our pupils learn and remember essential knowledge, creating a solid foundation for their educational journey, every single day.
Behaviour and Attitudes
We have been recognised as fostering a calm and orderly environment where pupils feel safe and happy. High expectations and a culture of ‘mutual respect’ contribute to positive behaviour and attitudes. ‘Clear and consistent
routines’ ensure that pupils know what is expected of them and they are in an environment where they can ‘learn well’.
Personal Development
Singled out as a school that is committed to celebrating diversity and supporting the personal growth of all pupils. Including effective assistance for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Our school provides opportunities that ‘inspire awe and wonder’ and places a strong emphasis on literacy and reading, enabling students to ‘read with confidence and develop an enjoyment of books and literature’
Leadership and Management
Strong leadership has been instrumental in driving improvements. New staff have been recruited, and the curriculum has been refined to ensure pupils can achieve their best. Regular training for staff ensures that they are well-equipped to close gaps in pupils’ understanding. Staff feel empowered and enormously proud of the rapid improvements that have been achieved.
Early Years Provision
Young children receive a positive start with warm and nurturing relationships with staff, helping them thrive both socially and academically.
Come and See for yourself
We are formally inviting each and every member of our community to come and see for yourself just how transformative our school is for the children of the Gatwick Diamond Business Community. Your children. Our children.

Teeing Up for a Cause: Bluebird's Charity Golf Day
As the sun sets on another glorious summer, the excitement is building for the much-anticipated Bluebird Golf Tournament, set to take place on September 27th at the Mid Sussex Golf Club. This event promises to be a day of friendly competition, camaraderie, and, most importantly, for a good cause to help end social isolation through community transport provision.
The format is simple yet impactful: every business entering a team,
donating a raffle prize, or providing an auction item will earn valuable tokens. These tokens will be a testament to the collective effort in raising funds for worthy causes.
Any business or organisation within the gdb network can get involved. By nominating a charity or business within the Charities Group to receive your tokens, you ensure that your support directly benefits the vital work of Community Transport Sussex.
Contributions for the event are welcome and can be submitted at two key gatherings: the Charities Group Meeting on July 17th and the Members' Meeting on July 26th. These meetings not only provide an opportunity to donate but also to network and share the spirit of giving as well as brand visibility through sponsorship opportunities.
Golf days can make excellent team building days by improving internal communication.
Mark your calendars and polish your clubs, for the Bluebird Golf Tournament is more than just a day on the green—it's a chance to drive change and putt for a purpose.
Join us on September 27th and be part of something special.

"Now Let's Build on This!": Gatwick Diamond Delegation Success Triggers Business Rally Call
The Gatwick Diamond delegation has returned from a successful showcase at UKREiiF 2024, with new connections and partnerships poised to enhance regional growth and collaboration.
The Gatwick Diamond Initiative, along with local and regional authorities and private sector affiliates, participated in UKREiiF 2024 in Leeds from 21-23 May. During the event, the coalition, which included representatives from Gatwick Airport, Sussex, Surrey, Kent, and South London, successfully forged numerous new connections and partnerships. Our Wild Sussex
Sussex Wildlife Trust is excited to share its bold new strategy to create a Sussex rich in wildlife, valued and protected by everyone.
Sussex is a special county. Our coastline and seas, chalk downland, river valleys, ancient woodlands and lowland heathlands support a remarkable range of wildlife throughout the year.
For more than 60 years, our staff and volunteers have worked alongside local communities to support wildlife and create more places where nature can thrive. However, despite our collective best efforts, we have only managed to slow rather than stop the ongoing loss of nature, as we face the growing pressures of habitat loss, pollution, and the increasing impacts of the climate crisis.
Now is the time for an ambitious action plan to match the scale and urgency of the challenges we are facing.
Our new strategy, Our Wild Sussex, sets out our vision to turn the tide for wildlife. By 2030, nature in Sussex will be in recovery. At least 30% of land and sea will be protected and well managed for wildlife as we broaden our impact to deliver innovative wildlife projects which allow nature to thrive.
People are the key to nature’s recovery and a crucial element of Our Wild Sussex strategy. We cannot restore nature and address climate change unless more people of all ages, identities, cultures, backgrounds and abilities take action.
With more people taking action and supporting our ambitious plans, we will reach an important tipping point
where the decline of wildlife in Sussex will swing into recovery.
Our success will depend on all sectors of our Sussex community working together to deliver Our Wild Sussex
Microsoft Planner VS Microsoft Project – which to choose?
Microsoft Project has been one of my favourite workshop subjects since the late 90’s, but I am also enjoying delivering training on the newer, simpler Microsoft Planner. So how do you know which is best for your team and the work that you do? Here are a few things that I hope will help in the decision-making process:
Project complexity
Project is a comprehensive project management tool, aimed at experienced project managers working with in-depth plans that can include tasks, people and costs. This is perfect for those needing something with complex planning capabilities. Expect a steeper learning curve!
Planner is user friendly and perfect for simpler projects and small teams working collaboratively. It allows you to manage tasks easily without the need for significant project management experience.
Features
Project includes detailed Gannt charts, resource allocation, time and budget tracking with complex project structures and dependencies. If you are PowerBI users, Project integrates with this to provide project performance insights.
Planner provides basic task management features such as tasks, assignments, due dates, checklists, attachments. Team members can add
comments and receive notifications. It has a more visual approach using Kanban boards and it integrates with Teams and Outlook.
Cost
Project has to be purchased as a standalone piece of software and is not included in Microsoft 365/Office.
Planner is included in most Microsoft 365 subscriptions, but you can upgrade to gain additional features if required.
Summary
Both tools have significant benefits, so it really depends on the scale and complexity of your projects. Is simplicity and collaboration more important? Or is in-depth project management going to be the key to your success?
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your training needs, Jane Hames would love to hear from you.

Lime Finance Solutions opens new office in Manor Royal
Lime Finance have moved to new office space from where they can better serve the local business and property market.
Dave Farmer of Lime Finance said, “In a finance world where everything is becoming more automated and AI is on the rise everywhere, we are finding that our clients value a conversation, phone call or talking over a coffee more than ever.
There are few business or property finance proposals that are straightforward, there is always a niche or the client has something in particular they want to achieve.
This year we have seen a massive rise in businesses being offered the opportunity to purchase their existing premises, driven by landlords looking to sell and recognising that their best buyer is the existing tenant. This in turn gives businesses more security, control

In today's fast-paced business environment, maintaining physical health is more crucial than ever. As employees juggle demanding schedules, integrating fitness into the workplace is essential. Investing in physical health enhances individual wellbeing and drives organisational success, creating a win-win for employees and employers. Workplace fitness programs are an excellent starting point. These initiatives can range from simple lunchtime walking sessions to boost concentration and
creativity to structured fitness challenges and health workshops. Encouraging the use of stairs, promoting walking meetings, and offering fitness incentives can incorporate more movement into the workday, promoting physical health and strengthening team dynamics.
Studies show that prioritising physical health through engaging employee wellbeing initiatives leads to a healthier, more resilient workforce, resulting in fewer sick days and disruptions. Educating employees on nutrition,

providing healthy snacks, and promoting balanced meals can significantly impact energy levels and cognitive function. Ergonomics is another critical aspect of workplace health. Proper ergonomic setups, including adjustable chairs and standing desks, can prevent common issues such as back pain and eye strain. Investing in ergonomic furniture and promoting good posture reduces workrelated injuries and enhances comfort.
A commitment to physical health in the workplace shows employees their wellbeing matters, fostering engagement, motivation, and loyalty. By prioritising employee wellbeing, businesses cultivate a thriving environment where both individuals and organisations can reach their full potential.

Creative Pod: A Journey of 18 Years and Counting!
Who remembers turning 18? Well, Creative Pod certainly does.
In April 2024, Creative Pod reached a significant milestone, turning 18. To celebrate this achievement, they

It provided an opportunity for team bonding and idea sharing, and the team has already put these changes into practice.
This is no mean feat for Creative Pod. Most marketing agencies in Sussex typically last between seven and ten

Crawley’s Creative Playground collaborating with local residents to bring arts & culture to the town
Creative Playground is an arts project to engage more local people in arts & culture, where community engagement is at the heart of what we do.
Twice a year, we hold ‘Programming Parties’; these are events where local people are invited to engage in creative activities, refreshments and choose what happens in our programme. The Playmakers (Volunteers) were keen to celebrate the green spaces of Crawley. Based on all the conversations and ideas that were shared, responses to the themes of nature and gardening, it was decided that we would produce a
One of the ways we have been working with local people is to create an art installation. We have connected with Crawley group, Community Creations, to co-design and co-create an artwork that will be displayed inside a beehive. This hive will form part of an art installation named, BEES! The Colony, by outdoor arts company Artizani.
We are presenting an artwork installation called Crossings by world renowned artist Luke Jerram. As part of this artwork, there are real stories which audiences listen to told by people from
across the world. To root the artwork in Crawley, local resident Parveen Khan was interviewed by BBC Radio4 Producer Julian May and her incredible story has been recorded.
Both artworks can be experienced at Around The Lake Festival which is taking place on Sat 13 - Sun 14 July, with the exception of Crossings running until Weds 17 July.
Around The Lake Festival is produced by Creative Playground. With thanks to Crawley Borough Council and funded by Arts Council England. Creative Playground is part of Without Walls, a network of organisations bringing innovative outdoor arts to towns and cities across England. Find out more on withoutwalls.uk.com

The Human Factor
People are the backbone of any organisation, and your first line of defence. However, there is always room for mistakes and errors.
It’s natural for humans to make mistakes, however, there are ways to manage this - and education is key.
‘The State of Cyber Risk 2023’ shows that organisations generally understand the risks of cybersecurity, but there is a disconnect between confidence levels and preventative action. It also highlighted confusion about what qualified as a ‘risk’ (45% of respondents defined the term ‘risk’ differently).
This demonstrates the importance of education to tackle cybersecurity.
Reduce data breaches from phishing attacks
Phishing is a social engineering attack that preys on unsuspecting victims and can cause a lot of damage. The best way to stop a phishing attack is to educate employees on what to look out for.
Meet compliance requirements
If you fall foul of compliance regulations your organisation could face legal repercussions, such as fines or even litigation. Therefore, ensuring everyone knows about security protocol will help keep your organisation out of trouble.
Built trust with customers
Your customers will value and trust your organisation more if they know employees are clued up on security. By being knowledgeable about the risks, your customers will know they can rely on your expertise and will trust you to do the job correctly.
How we can help
Cybersecurity is important because without it your organisation can become vulnerable to attacks and other breaches – and awareness training is key to educate employees and avoid risks association with human error.
If you’re looking for help with cybersecurity, reach out to Extech Cloud today. Our experts can advise you on the ideal strategy to both educate and protect your organisation.

Accountant to drive and donate aid-filled ambulance to Ukraine
Paul Samrah, a consultant with multidisciplinary professional advisory firm Moore Kingston Smith, is raising funds to refurbish an ambulance, fill it with supplies and personally deliver it to Ukraine as part of a convoy leaving Kent
on Sunday 22 September.
Paul is fundraising £15,000 for Medical Life Lines Ukraine (MLLU) through the Moore Kingston Smith Community Foundation. These funds will cover purchasing, renovating and stocking the ambulance with medical and practical aid, including dressings, equipment and defibrillators, as well as the drive to Ukraine.
Paul commented: “The need for humanitarian aid and medical supplies is enormous. Through this initiative, we can provide practical and essential assistance, and make a real difference to the people of Ukraine. Every penny raised goes towards the ambulance, stocking it and getting it to the Ministry of Health.”
Dubbed the ‘Mega Convoy’, the fleet leaving in September is set to be MLLU’s biggest yet. So far, the organisation has
delivered 52 ambulances to locations and hospitals throughout the country including Kyiv City Hospital, Boryspil Neonatal Centre, Okhmatdyt Children’s Perinatal Unit, Kharkiv A&E and more. Paul recently retired on 30 April, marking nearly 43 years with Moore Kingston Smith. Based at the Redhill office, he was Brexit impact specialist and led the healthcare sector. As well as heading up the Wellbeing Committee, he chaired the Charity Committee and launched the Moore Kingston Smith Community Foundation in 2021. The Redhill team continues to be led by partner Ian Matthews, supported by directors Amy Marshall and Mandy Settle.

The programme is 90% Government funded to support SMEs with 5+ staff to grow. It is delivered online and face to face over 12 weeks and participants are supported by a one-to-one mentor to produce a growth plan.
Over 200 business leaders have attended the programme with the University of Brighton and after a successful programme in Crawley last year they are coming back to support local businesses in November.
Recent graduate Vicky Haines is Managing Director at Kingsway Care who are Gatwick Diamond members. She tells us about her time on Help to Grow.
“The programme has had a positive impact on the business and on me as a leader. Every module built on the one
before, the journey and logic of the programmes are easy to apply to build my knowledge and build the business. I loved the peer group sessions where we had the opportunity to discuss what we have learnt a few days before. There was so much application with this course – it wasn’t simply theory, but we were able to apply the content to our own business, which was invaluable.”
Vicky started to implement changes as she went through the course. “If I came across something new or that I felt we could improve, I usually went straight back to my team and implemented the changes immediately.”
Kingsway Care is a multi-awardwinning domiciliary care provider and a leading care provider in Brighton and Hove. Vicky is passionate about raising the profile of social care/home care, encouraging government, local authorities and the public to recognise
this is a sector to be valued and respected, ensuring that outstanding care becomes the norm for all.

Wind power surpasses fossil fuels for two consecutive quarters
Wind power has surpassed fossil fuels in UK electricity generation for two consecutive quarters, marking a significant milestone for renewable energy.
Data from energy think tank Ember shows that wind farms were the primary source of electricity in the UK in the first quarter of 2024, producing 25.3 terawatt hours (TWh), compared to 23.6 TWh from fossil fuels. Wind power accounted for 39.4% of total electricity, surpassing the 36.2% from fossil fuels. This trend continued from the last quarter of 2023, demonstrating a consistent shift towards wind power.
The combined output from wind and solar farms reached 27.1 TWh in Q1 2024, representing 42.2% of total electricity generation. However, renewable energy is subject to seasonal variability. Wind speeds typically drop in the summer, leading to lower wind generation, as seen in 2023 when wind generation fell
by 46% and 34% in the second and third quarters, respectively. A similar pattern is expected in 2024.
Despite this, increased solar output during sunnier periods is expected
to partially offset the decline in wind generation. Solar farms are projected to produce around 5 TWh in the second quarter, although wind farms generally generate more electricity.
To ensure stable power supplies, utilities may use more electricity from nuclear reactors, bioenergy facilities, and hydro dams, and potentially resort to natural gas and coal during highdemand periods in the summer.
As wind speeds pick up again after summer, wind farm output is expected to rebound, reaffirming their role as the primary electricity source in the UK. This cyclical pattern underscores the importance of renewable energy in achieving carbon reduction and energy transition goals.

Feed Your Body Clock: Aligning Meals with Your Circadian Rhythm to Boost Health for Shift Workers
Chrononutrition, a branch of science that merges nutrition with our circadian rhythms, offers valuable insights for managing health, especially in shift workers. It rests on the principle that eating times are integral to managing the body's biological clock, which regulates digestion, metabolism, and energy levels. For shift workers, whose schedules often disrupt these natural rhythms, adhering to chrononutrition principles could mitigate health risks.
Shift workers are at a heightened risk for several conditions, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, mood disorders, and increased fatigue. These risks are significantly influenced by disrupted circadian rhythms, as irregular or nocturnal eating patterns can confuse the body's metabolic processes. This misalignment often leads to inefficient
digestion and metabolism, escalating the propensity for weight gain and metabolic disorders.
However, with an understanding of chrononutrition, shift workers can take proactive steps to realign their eating habits and improve their health outcomes. Certain foods can drive fatigue, so learning about better food choices can be an important health and safety practice, particularly if your business employs a fleet of drivers.
By making informed food choices and considering the timing of meals, shift workers can enhance their mood and energy levels, and reduce the risk of chronic health issues.
Chrononutrition isn't just about what you eat; it's also about when you eat, turning meal timing into a powerful tool for better health.

Sussex Community Foundation hosts panel discussion events
Sussex Community Foundation recently hosted two panel discussion events, bringing together our stakeholders united by their passion for local communities in Sussex.
Focusing on East and West Sussex, the events highlighted the key challenges found in the Foundation’s Tackling Poverty report, and the vital role played by local charities in offering solutions.
The Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex,
Andrew Blackman welcomed guests at the East Sussex event in Hastings, whilst Deputy Lieutenant, Neil Hart gave the opening words at the West Sussex event in Chichester.
Both panels had representatives from local charities who see directly the real challenges faced by people in Sussex. Each panellist took questions and shared their insights and experiences from the front line of the voluntary sector.
Thanks to the participating panellists from Rotherfield St Martin, Hastings Voluntary Action, the Down Syndrome Development Trust, Springboard Project, Citizens Advice in West Sussex and Mid Sussex Older People’s Council.
Hannah Clay, Head of Grant Programmes at the Foundation said: “We, like many other funders, are overwhelmed by the current level of demand. Last year we gave out over £2.6 million to 449 groups across Sussex and we are grateful to all our donors and supporters who made this possible. However, we received over 1,000 applications totalling over £7.5 million in funding requested. It’s currently an extremely tough environment for our local voluntary sector and the gap between need and funding available is growing.”

Southern train connections between Gatwick, Crawley and the South Coast are now better, faster and smoother
On 3 June, Southern Railway introduced a number of changes to improve train services for passengers in Hampshire and West Sussex, including:
• Double the number of trains between London, Gatwick, Crawley and Portsmouth – now a half-hourly service (from hourly).
• Final stop extended to Portsmouth Harbour for better connections to ferry services and attractions.
• Double the number of weekday Littlehampton to London Victoria via Gatwick Airport services, which will now run half-hourly.
• More evenly spaced departures to cut waiting times, and better reliability and punctuality across the route. Customers, local businesses and stakeholders are already benefitting from our better, faster and smoother journeys; here’s what a selection have had to say:
Gary Mortimer Cook, Economic Development Officer for Horsham DC:
“A lot of our work is spent supporting the local visitor economy and we’re really excited by what Southern are doing to double the stops along the route between London, Gatwick, Crawley and the South Coast, including key tourist hot spots such as Amberley.”
Katrina Burton, Museum Director, Amberley Museum:
“We’re really pleased to see the introduction of half-hourly stops at Amberley railway station. Amberley Museum is right beside the station, so this will make a huge difference to our visitors, staff and volunteers, making it much easier for people to arrive by train knowing that they have much more flexibility in timing for their journey and better connections along the coast.”
Becca Hubbard Associate Executive Director of Marketing for the National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard:
“The new Southern Rail timetable improves rail connectivity across the South Coast, which is key to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in providing better and more sustainable travel to our visitors and staff. We very much look forward to welcoming more people into Portsmouth this summer to experience the incredible ships and collections in our care.”

How to protect your business
Business protection is indeed crucial for ensuring the longevity and stability of any enterprise. Mitigating risks associated with key individuals, financial losses, and unforeseen events is fundamental for sustaining operations and protecting the interests of stakeholders.
One critical aspect of business protection revolves around safeguarding
against the potential loss of key individuals due to serious illness or death. Statistics reveal a significant probability of such events occurring, which could have devastating consequences for the business. In these scenarios, business protection insurance plays a vital role. It can help the business weather the storm by providing financial support to cover lost revenue, profits, or debt obligations.
For businesses with multiple owners, the loss of one owner can raise complex issues regarding shareholding and business continuity. Shareholder agreements can offer direction in such situations, typically involving the purchase of the deceased owner's shares by the surviving shareholders. However, funding this purchase can pose a challenge. Share protection insurance steps in to address this challenge by providing the necessary capital to facilitate the smooth transfer of shares and ensure the business can
continue operating without disruption. By implementing proactive measures like business protection insurance, companies can fortify themselves against various risks and enhance their resilience in the face of adversity. This not only safeguards the interests of the business and its stakeholders but also fosters a secure and sustainable future.
If you would like to discuss business protection further, please get in touch with Mark Williams.

How Do Other People Perceive You? Leading Your Personal Brand
Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a leader… you are still a leader! Every conversation you have with someone else, you will lead for a while… especially if you are in ‘influencing mode’.
Aside from the content of your communication, you will be making an impression about yourself in the minds of others. This is what becomes your personal brand… and the ‘meaning’ of your personal brand is in the mind of the audience. Different people may perceive you in different ways.
So how do you take control of your personal brand, rather than leave it to chance? Obviously, we can’t control people’s thoughts and reactions to us… but we can be more proactive and purposeful in what we project.
So… how do you want to be seen? How do you want to be thought of and remembered when you leave the room? Take a moment and pick three
qualities/characteristics that you would like to be known for. Then consider what specific actions and performance would demonstrate each of these. For example, if you want to be known for being ‘positive’… you need to behave in that manner… consistently!
When I ask people to do this exercise, they often chose things like ‘reliable’, ‘good communicator’, ‘well organised’, ‘friendly’. However, let’s take those as a given… these are baseline qualities that everyone needs to demonstrate and deliver to.
Go beyond the baseline… how do you want to be perceived? Be bold here… because when combined, these qualities are your ‘USP’… what makes you stand out! How about inspirational, entertaining, intelligent, wise, leading edge, quirky, enlightening, compelling, engaging, confident…? But enough about me... (just kidding!)
If you don’t take control of your personal brand and drive it yourself… then others will make it up… one way or another!

Unlocking future growth: how Crawley's
£21.1 million Towns Fund
is set to transform the local economy
Crawley is delivering significant transformation through a £21.1 million investment from the government’s Towns Fund. The Crawley Town Investment Plan set out the vision for the Towns Fund’s innovative, regeneration projects that seek to unlock job opportunities and stimulate economic growth, benefiting and attracting local businesses, employees and residents.
1. Crawley Innovation Centre
The Crawley Innovation Centre in Manor Royal is scheduled to open in the autumn with interest building from prospective tenants. It will provide a state-of-the-art space for hi-tech SMEs and micro-enterprises, complete with R&D labs, prototyping workshops and co-working areas. The £4.5 million Towns Fund contribution aims to create more than 200 new jobs and support up to 40 businesses, fostering growth in sectors such as clean energy and quantum technology. Collaboration and partnerships with the region’s universities, colleges and businesses will be a further benefit.
2. Invest in Skills
Allocating £15.7 million, of which £4.5 million is supported by the Towns Fund, this initiative will enhance vocational training and higher education infrastructure at Crawley College. It will establish a Construction Hub in the new Institute of Technology building and will upskill the local workforce across Level 2, 3 and 4 skills training in construction, professional services and ICT/digital sectors, based on the requirements of today’s employers. The Green Village and immersive spaces have already seen learners and visitors experience new learning materials and courses.
3. Crawley Greentech Business Growth Fund
This £1 million fund will bolster the ‘green technology’ sectors by providing financial support of up to £175,000 to eligible small and medium-sized businesses. It offers grants for startups, prototyping and scaling up activities, aiming to foster new technology, innovation and job creation in Crawley.
4. Local Energy Community
Supported by £1 million as part of the Crawley Towns Fund, this project will create a new approach to decarbonisation through a local energy community. The Towns Fund will provide the initial funding for the installation of photovoltaic cells on commercial rooftops in the Manor Royal Business District, contributing to Crawley's carbon net zero goals.
5. Commercial Eastern Gateway
Delivering feasibility plans for new phases of commercial space, enhancing the town centre's capacity for high-quality office space and supporting professional services, building on momentum generated by The Create Building.
6. Station Gateway
The Towns Fund contributes £2 million towards the project, which will revitalise the area around the bus station, Friary Way, Station Way and The Martlets. It will create a more attractive space for the community and encourage further active travel with a redesigned bus station and improved traffic flows. A public consultation has been completed and construction is set to begin in summer 2025.
7. Manor Royal Gigabit Business District
With a budget of £1.95 million, this project will provide every business in Manor Royal Business District access to connect to gigabit broadband by deploying fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) to businesses of all sizes. This will ensure that businesses are competitive and help encourage further investment in the area.
8. Town Centre Cultural Quarter
The Pop-Up Culture programme hosts regular testbed events from a variety of genres and in diverse venues to attract visitors to the town centre. By March 2026, the project aims to complete feasibility studies, site delivery plans and a masterplan for a new Cultural Hub. This £450,000 initiative works in synergy with other creative industry initiatives to increase footfall, create jobs and enhance Crawley’s reputation as a creative place.
9. Manor Royal Business Environment Improvement Programme
This scheme focuses on environmental upgrades within the Manor Royal Business District. It will establish a network of micro parks, ensuring accessible outdoor spaces within a five-minute walk for all workers. The project aims to deliver 3,300 m² of new parks, 1,200 m² of improved public realm via six micro parks, two gateway upgrades and a walking trail with the support of £1.5 million Towns Fund.
10. Crawley Green Homes Retrofitting project
The £4 million budget will retrofit more than 1,500 councilowned flats with cavity wall insulation by March 2026, reducing CO2 emissions through a ‘fabric first’ approach. The 1,000th property will be completed this summer to reduce household heat loss by up to 35 per cent. This contributes towards Crawley’s Net Zero ambitions.
These projects are guided by the Crawley Town Deal Board, a group of more than 50 representatives from businesses, community organisations and public organisations.
The Towns Fund programme aims to build an attractive, resilient and innovative location, fit for the future. It is already delivering new business collaborations and opportunities between projects and organisations. As these projects continue to progress, they will ensure Crawley’s economic, environmental, technological, educational and place-making contribution in the region for businesses and investors.
Carbon Literacy Training: A Catalyst for Corporate Climate Action
A recent study by the University of Sussex Business School reveals a surprising truth about carbon literacy training: its power lies not just in knowledge transfer, but in fostering collaborative action.
Businesses understand the increasing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance, both for attracting investors and for appealing to environmentally conscious consumers. However, translating good intentions into tangible action can be challenging. This is where carbon literacy training comes in.
Last year, staff at the Business School followed a carbon literacy training course accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project. Group activities identified the sources of carbon emissions and agreed on practical steps to reduce emissions.
The study’s co-author, Dr René Moolenaar, commented: “The training had a limited impact on advancing knowledge in carbon costs and impacts. Likely, the School’s existing sustainability policy and practices and its prominent
status in sustainability research are the reasons behind this.
“However, we found that while participants' knowledge of carbon impacts was already high, the group activities were instrumental in creating a safe space for brainstorming and collaborative problem-solving. As a result, participants created an action plan to reduce carbon emissions, which the Business School is now actively implementing and monitoring.”
Key Businesses Takeaways:
Don't just focus on knowledge transfer: While understanding carbon impacts is important, the true value of training lies in facilitating collaboration and action planning.
Create a safe space for discussion: Encourage employees to share ideas and concerns openly, without fear of judgment.
Focus on solutions: Guide discussions towards actionable steps that your organization can take to reduce its
Tips for avoiding business underinsurance
Business underinsurance occurs when a business doesn’t have sufficient financial protection in its insurance policies, to cover its risks. It’s a serious problem that’s estimated to affect 80% of UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)*.
To limit your chances of falling into the underinsurance trap, we recommend:
1. Consult an independent insurance broker – they’ll be able to give you advice to ensure your business is adequately protected.
2. Review your requirements ahead of your renewal – keep a record of your assets and liabilities and check them annually.
3. Value property based on the rebuild valuation—not the market value. A qualified professional, such as a building surveyor, needs to do this.
4. Don’t underestimate the value of your
business’s assets to try to get cheaper cover—in the event of a claim, this could cost you far more than you’ve saved.
5. Be realistic about business interruption indemnity periods—while 12 months is the standard period, many consider 24 months more realistic.
6. Check your liability limits and contractual obligations – you may

find you are contractually obliged to have higher limits in place.
7. Be aware of new risks—for example, with cyber-attacks on the rise, it could be a good idea to consider cyberinsurance.
8. Have a disaster recovery plan in place—this will help speed up your business’s recovery and can avoid exceeding indemnity limits.
9. Factor in inflation when setting limits – rising prices could leave you out of pocket in the event of a claim. Review policy limits and look at what the inflation rate over the past year has been.
10. Include costs such as potential fees for solicitors, IT professionals and accountants – these may require additional cover.

How do you obtain your Cyber Essentials Certification?
In today's digital age, demonstrating your commitment to information security is crucial. The governmentbacked Cyber Essentials Scheme offers an excellent starting point for small businesses to show customers, prospects, suppliers, and insurers that they take cyber security seriously. Recent statistics reveal that businesses with Cyber Essentials Certification are over 90% less likely to fall victim to cyber crime compared to those without.
Understanding the Cyber Essentials Certification Process
Cyber Essentials is a self-assessmentbased certification completed through an online portal. The process involves answering around 90 straightforward questions, many of which require simple Yes or No responses. These questions cover five fundamental technical control areas:
1. User Access Control
2. Security Updates
3. Secure Configuration
4. Malware Protection
5. Firewalls & Routers
The self-assessment captures a snapshot of your company's current security posture, and no evidence is needed during the initial submission. The Cyber Essentials scheme is reviewed annually, with updates to the questions ensuring the program remains relevant.
Partnering with a Certification Body
To achieve certification, you’ll collaborate with a Cyber Essentials Certification body such as Sussex Tech Support. After completing the selfassessment, submit your answers to the certification body, which will review them for compliance with the scheme's standards. Upon successful evaluation, you’ll receive a digital certificate valid for 12 months, after which you’ll need to re-certify.
If you encounter difficulties while answering the questions or need to make changes to your IT network to meet the requirements, certification

Over the past 30 years I have experienced various personality profiling tools and have always been fascinated by their accuracy. People’s behaviour and the way they interact with each other also fascinates me so when the gdb Team had the opportunity to work with Pradeep Patel and DISCprofiles.UK recently, I jumped at the chance.
Pradeep told us “While it’s easy to understand that differences in people’s behavioural styles can lead to friction in personal relationships and sub-par team working, what is not so well realised is
that such differences create an overhead on the business and a resulting negative financial impact.
We work with your people and individuals to improve People Productivity by making them self-aware of their style of behaviour and its impact on others.”
Following completion of the training session the gdb team members gave the following feedback: “The questionnaire to establish your personality type was easy to use and follow and didn’t take too much time to complete.”
“I found it really interesting and useful to understand more about each different personality type and their preferred work/communication styles. It was a good opportunity to stop and reflect on how best we can work together as a team.”
“I like the web portal which allows you
to compare your DISC profile with others in your team really clearly, enabling you to see the areas in which you are similar and different. This tool will be useful for developing and working together. Also, on your DISC profile you are able to see in detail where you are on the chart, even having the option to listen to a podcast specifically about your style within your segment of the disk.”
“I found the DISC profiling very interesting, not only to learn about what drives, motivates or stresses me, but also what enthuses my colleagues and how best to understand their work patterns.”
Our thanks to Pradeep for providing us with this interesting session and the tools to help us better understand ourselves and the people we engage with.

Humanimal Trust
Humanimal Trust was established in May 2014 by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick who is known globally as a ground-breaking orthopaedic-neuro veterinary surgeon.
As a vet he personally experienced the deep divide between human and animal medicine but was frustrated by the lack of opportunities to share what he was learning from daily practice or the ability to benefit from the relevant
building surveys to project management and contract administration. We blend traditional service with the latest technology to deliver projects on time and within budget. Our adaptive approach and industry contributions make us a trusted ally to clients and partners. Join us on our journey towards excellence.
learning from human medicine. This laid the foundations for the work that Humanimal Trust does today, working to remove barriers and seeking to close the divide between human and animal medicine. Since those beginnings, the Trust has started to establish a powerful evidence base and to build understanding of both the principles and the potential of One Medicine.

Nutrivival
I am a former police officer - I was a detective on the murder squad with Essex Police and am now the director of Nutrivival (Revival through Nutrition!) working as a qualified nutritional therapist. There is a link!
The challenges of shift work led me to specialise in an unusual area called chrono-nutrition, which looks at the relationship between our 24-hour
body clock, what we eat when and the potential impact on our health. I help with combatting fatigue with nutrition and lifestyle medicine, address low mood and weight issues, and at reducing the increased risk to shift workers of chronic health conditions. Nutrivival provides nutrition consultancy and training for organisations with shift workers and I can work with individuals 1:1.
