NINDITYO ADIPURNOMO Gender Artefact 2nd in rattan and sea grass, 130 x 100 x 65 cm, 2016 JAKARTAART

This three-dimensional work is part of the Gender Artifact series that I worked on in 2016, with a total of four objects that I have successfully produced. The objects are constructed by rattan pitrit, which is then wrapped with rattan weaving techniques and followed with various combinations of woven materials such as mendong grass and recycled ropes from packaging paper.
The main concept of this series is a form of critical thinking in redefining the stereotypes of social construction that are constantly changing and developing, that of social roles and relations of men and women, non-binary, and transgender. For me, the attributes of social roles of each gender can continuously develop following the creation of fashion expressions. Therefore the construction will not always be permanent!

In the early periods of my analysis of the hair bun (sanggul), I explored and exploited the ideas of forms from and to various forms of the bun (sanggul), creating several interpretations that were not only humorous and even serious, but even repellent. One of the interpretations that I like to exploit is that no matter how similar the two identical forms of buns (sanggul), they will indeed exude a diverse sensuality when they have been worn by two different women. I ‘believe’ that the buns (sanggul) become the ‘sex appeal’ of each wearer. This three-dimensional work contains objects which are identical but at the same time different that emerged from the bun mound, resembling various interpretations of the shape of the mound on the ground; For example, a mound of loose soil produced by insects in the soil.
