Komplexe Zeiten Complex Times

To build simply – is that even possible? Can building be an easy task today, given a building culture shaped by standards, an oversupply of construction materials, and industrial production methods? Construction and building services engineering are becoming increasingly complicated. Nevertheless, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has established a research group dedicated to “Simple Building”. It may seem absurd – research is commonly conducted on complex topics. But the question they’re investigating is how the principles of simple construction can be applied without restricting users’ comfort and behaviour.

This topic was also the subject of intensive discussions in our editorial office, which are reflected in the contents we chose for this issue. We immediately agreed on the holiday home in Fanø by young Danish architects Lenschow & Philmann, which not only reveals a clearly structured floor plan but also the building m ­ aterials in their raw state (page 40). The memorial in Gardelegen by BHBVT, with its 72 cm thick walls made of lightweight concrete, won us over with its simple details (page 32).

The monolithic structure, however, required a lot of building material. The temporary homes in Barcelona have a smaller ecological footprint. They consist of reused shipping containers, which are finished with a simple, polycarbonate panel facade (page 22). For our Technology feature, Jakob Schoof describes how some buildings manage without heating systems (page 56), and in our Green Special we present Great Britain’s largest social housing development built to Passive House standards.

It’s not easy to define the term simplicity in our affluent ­society. We hope that this issue will provide you with some food for thought in that direction.

Einfach bauen. Geht das überhaupt? Kann man in einer Kultur, die von Normen, einem Überangebot an Baustoffen und indu­ striellen Fertigungsmethoden geprägt ist, noch einfach bauen?

Konstruktion und Gebäudetechnik werden schließlich immer komplizierter. An der Technischen Universität in München erforscht ein Lehrstuhl das einfache Bauen. Das klingt zunächst absurd, wird in der Regel doch eher an komplexen Themen geforscht. Die Frage jedoch ist, wie die Prinzipien des einfachen Bauens aussehen können, ohne Komfort und Verhalten der Nut­ zer einzuschränken. Darüber haben wir auch in der Redaktion ausgiebig diskutiert und die Inhalte für dieses Heft entspre­ chend ausgesucht. Sofort waren wir uns über das Ferienhaus in Fanø der jungen dänischen Architekten Lenschow & Pihlmann einig, die einerseits einen klar gegliederten Grundriss entworfen haben und andererseits sämtliche Baumaterialien in ihrem Roh­ zustand zeigen (Seite 40). Bei der Gedenkstätte in Gardelegen von BHBVT mit ihren 72 cm dicken Wänden aus Leichtbeton überzeugten die einfachen Details (Seite 32). Allerdings braucht die monolithische Bauweise viel Material. Einen geringeren öko­ logischen Fußabdruck haben die temporären Wohnhäuser in Barcelona (Seite 22). Sie bestehen aus wiederverwendeten Schiffscontainern, die mit einer simplen Fassade aus Polycarbo­ natplatten veredelt sind. In seinem Technikbeitrag beschreibt Jakob Schoof, wie Häuser ohne Heizung auskommen (Seite 56) und in der Rubrik Green Special stellen wir Großbritanniens größten sozialen Wohnungsbau im Passivhausstandard vor.

Es ist nicht leicht, den Begriff Einfachheit in unserer Wohl­ standsgesellschaft zu deuten. Vielleicht liefert dieses Heft ein paar Anregungen, sich dazu Gedanken zu machen. Mich würde das sehr freuen.

or ten years in a row, Vienna has been rated as the city with the highest quality of life ­worldwide. It benefits from low crime and good infrastructure, while 500,000 Viennese in ­subsidized housing guarantee social peace. The Alt ­Erlaa ­estate boasts the highest level of housing ­satisfaction: 93 % of its residents find it to be “very good” or “good”. Built in the 1970s, it has ca. 10,000 residents today. In 1968, Harry Glück, Kurt Hlaweniczka, and Requat & Rheintaller planned this social housing ­paradise on an area of 24,0000 m2 as a dense, ­futuristic structure in a large park. Mit ihrem Wohnhaus im gotischen Viertel, dem ältesten der katalanischen Hauptstadt, errichteten Archi­ tekten und Stadtverwaltung jetzt das erste Gebäude des Pro­ gramms auf einem von zwei Brandwänden gefassten Eckgrund­ stück. Bisher war die Fläche als Erweiterung eines öffentlichen Platzes genutzt worden.

Auf einer Tragstruktur aus Stahl, die im Boden verankert ist, lagern – wie auf einem Tisch – zwölf Schiffsontainer über vier Ebenen. Ein weiterer Container auf dem Dach beherbergt die Haustechnik. Das Twistlocksystem, das sonst auf Schiffen, der Bahn oder Lastwagen die Container auf dem jeweiligen

assembly and disassembly for new deployment in a new con­ figuration. In collaboration with the municipality they designed a residential building in the Gothic Quarter, the oldest part of the Catalan capital. Located on a corner property delineated by two fire walls, it represents the first building of the program.

Previously the area was used as an extension of an adjacent ­public space.

A steel structure serves to stack twelve shipping containers across four floors. A further container on the roof contains all mechanical equipment. The twist-lock system commonly used on freight ships, trains and trucks to keep containers in place connects the modules with each other and the structure. The

Vom Bauen in engen Gassen Building along narrow alleys

The site in the historic core of Barcelona posed two challenges to the construction process and foundation work: Difficult soil conditions and narrow, lively alleys.

A swampy site, artificially infilled with different types of clay prevalent in many parts of the city and a high groundwater table required deep foundations.

Due to the proximity of neighbouring structures this work had to be undertaken with a minimum of noise and vibrations. In order to avoid excessive earthworks typically required to create the necessary floor slab the architects opted for a minimally invasive type of foundation based on micropiles. A sensible solution for constrained site conditions, they can be created with relatively small and lightweight drills.

Only narrow and highly frequented alleys offered construction trucks and machinery access to the site.

Die Lage des Grundstücks im historischen Kern von Barcelona brachte zwei Herausforderungen für den Bauablauf und die Gründungsarbeiten mit sich: Schwierige Bodenverhältnisse und enge, belebte Gassen.

Ein sumpfiger Baugrund, künstlich aufgefüllt mit verschiedenen Arten von Ton, wie er in vielen Teilen der Stadt zu finden ist, und ein hoher Grund­ wasserspiegel erforderte eine tiefe Gründung, die wegen der engen Nachbarbebauung möglichst lärm- und erschütterungsarm erfolgen musste. Um größere Aushubarbeiten zu vermeiden, die bei einer

Bodenplatte erforderlich gewesen wären, wählten die Planer eine gering invasive Gründung mit Mikro­ pfählen. Sie war auch mit relativ kleinen und leichten Bohrgeräten und unter beengten Platzverhältnissen gut auszuführen.

Die Zufahrt von Transportern und Baumaschi­ nen auf die Baustelle war nur über schmale und viel befahrene Gassen möglich. Durch die Vorfertigung fast aller Bauteile in einer Werkhalle hielten die Pla­ ner die Bauzeit vor Ort sehr kurz. So vermieden sie Verkehrsbehinderungen und den Einsatz eines gro­ ßen Turmkrans. Prefabrication of almost all construction components in a workshop enabled the planners to keep the on-site construction time short. This helped avoid traffic disturbances and the use of a large tower crane. Right after the foundation work was completed in August of 2019 the structure for the ground floor area was assembled. A transporter with a mobile crane delivered the containers, completed to 85 per­ cent, including prefabricated ductwork. A central ­service module on the roof bundles all ductwork for building services. Twist-lock connectors serve to con­ nect the containers to each other and the structure.

dungsarbeiten im August 2019 konnte die Tragstruk­ tur, die das Erdgeschoss bildet, montiert werden. Ein Transporter mit mobilem Kran lieferte die zu 85 % fer­ tig ausgebauten Container mit vorgerichteten Versor­ gungsschächten an. Ein zentrales Servicemodul auf dem Dach bündelt die gesamten Leitungen der Haus­ technik. Twistlock-Verriegelungen verbinden die Con­ tainer untereinander und mit der Tragstruktur. Dazu klinken sie in die genormten Eckbeschläge der Con­ tainer ein und verriegeln mit einer 90-Grad-Drehung formschlüssig. Die Grundstruktur war in weniger als zwei Tagen errichtet und die Laubengänge und Log­ gien, die die äußere Schicht der Fassade aus Poly­ carbonatplatten tragen, konnten montiert werden.

Wie viel Technik braucht ein Haus? Und vor allem welche Technik? Vor zwei Jahren sagte Dietmar Eberle dazu in einem Interview: „Wissen ist Hightech. Nicht die Schraube, die man braucht, um das Wissen zu befestigen, sondern das Wissen selbst.

Das Haus ist voll mit hochwertigem Wissen und daher auch Hightech.“1 Das Gebäude, auf das er anspielt, wurde 2013 in einem suburbanen Gewerbegebiet im Vorarlberger Ort Lustenau fertiggestellt. Es ist ein sechsgeschossiger, kalkverputzter Kubus mit 24 m Kantenlänge, großen Lochfenstern mit tiefen Laibungen und hohen, offen gestalteten Innenräumen. Der größte Teil der Flächen wird als Büros genutzt, unter anderem für die örtliche Niederlassung von Eberles Büro Baumschlager Eberle Architekten. Außerdem gibt es in den Obergeschossen eine Wohnung und ein Yogastudio. Eine Kunstgalerie und die Mitarbeiterkantine der Büros im Erdgeschoss komplettieren den vielfältigen Nutzungsmix. Außergewöhnlich ist das Haus vor allem aufgrund dessen, was ihm fehlt: Ganz ohne konventionelle Heiz-, Kühl- und Lüftungstechnik, nur mit den Mitteln der Architektur selbst und mit automatisch gesteuerten Lüftungsklappen in den Fassaden soll es seinen Nutzern ganzjährig Innenraumtemperaturen zwischen 22 und 26 °C bieten – und das ohne Einbußen bei der Luftqualität in den Innenräumen.2 Dieses Ziel haben Baumschlager Eberle Architekten inzwischen zum Markenzeichen gemacht. Mit dem Kürzel 2226 bezeichnen sie alle Gebäude, die

2226 Lustenau

How much technology does a building actually need?

And, most of all, what kind of technology? In an interview held two years ago Dietmar Eberle offered an answer: “Knowledge is high tech. Not the knowledge of how to connect something, but instead, knowledge as such. The building is full of high value knowledge, and therefore, also high tech.”1 The building that he refers to was completed in 2013 in Lustenau in the Austrian Vorarlberg region.

It is a six-storey, lime-rendered cube measuring 24 metres along its sides and featuring deeply recessed windows and tall interiors with an open plan layout.

The greatest share of interiors serves as office spaces, among others for the local branch of Eberle’s firm, Baumschlager Eberle Architekten. The upper floors house an apartment and a yoga studio. An art gallery and the office cafeteria on the ground floor complement the diverse mix of uses. The building is exceptional most of all due to what it doesn’t possess: conventional heating, cooling and ventilation technology is absent. Nevertheless the building is supposed to provide interior temperatures ranging from 22 to 26 degrees Celsius throughout the year, exclusively by architectural means and supported by automatically controlled ventilation flaps, without impairing the interior air quality.2 Baumschlager Eberle Architekten already turned this aim into a brand. The number 2226 denominates all buildings that follow an identical climate concept.

A consulting firm markets the concept and offers advisory to clients and architects alike. In the meantime the architects completed three further new ­buildings of the 2226 type. In 2018 an office building with training centre was established in Emmenbrücke, close to Lucerne. In 2019 a therapy centre with ­apartments was completed in Lingenau in the Bregenzerwald area. And finally a residential building was erected in Dornbirn. This offers the opportunity for an early assessment: How do these heater-less buildings work, which preconditions in terms of construction do they need to meet, which experiences in operating them have been made thus far?

Heater-less buildings – how do they work?

The office building in Lustenau is a prototype for the 2226 concept: The building volume is compact, its envelope is airtight, it features a low U-value and comprises large, exposed thermal mass. An optional advantage are tall interiors with an open plan layout.

These characteristics are typical to buildings from the late 19th century in central Europe. However, they ­seldom achieve the same degree of energy efficiency. They lack an essential element: the automatic control of building services based on algorithms that the architects optimized within their deliberations, spanning many years. They are the precondition for the buildings to meet current energy standards and comfort criteria.

The most important heat source of a building are the individuals that occupy it, including their household appliances and IT equipment, artificial lighting, and to a lesser degree, sunlight that enters the building through its windows. As calculations

positive. Avoiding any and all heating and cooling systems also prevented exceeding the ambitious budget. The result of this endeavour: at ten Swiss francs per square metre, the rent for apartments in the building is roughly half the Basle average. Rents for apartments in new buildings in the city are even more expensive.

How sustainable is the concept?

Since its opening 2226 Lustenau’s climate concept inspired the imagination of countless architects. It also garnered skepticism and disapproval. In 2014 Robert Lechner, board member of the Austrian Sustainable Building Council, stated: “The realised system comprises two motors each for every openable window, totalling 200 motors for ventilation alone. [...] Elsewhere in the building heat generated by occupants and appliances contributes to heating in summer and in winter. Said appliances are more so intentionally turned off than on. Thermal insulation?

The solid exterior wall is 80 centimetres thick, twice of what is typically required. The building is, in fact, insulated, yet in a rather elaborate manner.”4 The architects counter this argument by explaining that the ventilation motors are durable, require ­little maintenance and are easily accessible in the case of a defect. Further, they need only a fraction of the space that typical building services would otherwise occupy. “Artificial lighting is used only under ­special circumstances as a supplemental heat source, such as during long periods of vacancy or long office downtime during winter”, adds Yasemin Yalcin-Chauca. What about the grey energy that Lechner refers to by calling the thermal insulation “elaborate”? For numerous new buildings that follow the 2226 concept, ecological assessments are available spanning 60 year life cycles. The results are within the range of tolerance for buildings that match the Swiss 2000 Watt society concept. They perform similarly well as energy efficient new buildings that meet the Swiss Minergie-P-Eco sustainability label criteria.

Still, this refers to model calculations. The decisive issue will be whether electricity consumption in the buildings remains comparably low and whether the electrical motors will be as durable as assumed.

In the absence of robust and publicly accessible post-occupancy data we currently have to rely on the architects’ sporadic reports.

Further, in some of the Earth’s climate zones the concept reaches its limits. The building engineering physicist Lars Junghans researched whether 2226 Lustenau could be realised as an office building in different US cities.5 Results show: regardless of whether it is located in Chicago, Seattle or San Francisco – in any and all cases the building would require active cooling and in harsh Chicago winters heating systems in order to provide comfortable interior temperatures throughout the year. 2226 doesn’t offer a single solution for the entire planet. At least for the central European context, however, it is a highly promising approach to reducing to what can be considered normal levels the excessive technological expenditure that construction currently entails.

Tragende Fertigteile aus Recyclingbeton Precast Elements Made of Recycled Concrete

Hybridwand aus Holz und Beton Hybrid Wall Made of Wood and Concrete

Das Fertigteilwerk Beton-Betz hat als Hauptpartner in einem EUProjekt mitgewirkt, das die Entwicklung von Beton aus recycelten Sekundärrohstoffen fördert. Nun wurden vom französischen Projektpartner Vicat Cement die ersten Bauteile mit entsprechender Güteüberwachung produziert. Die Betonfertigteile haben einen 100 %-igen Anteil an recycelten Gesteinskörnungen und Zement. Zusammen bilden sie eine Schutzwand an einem Rastplatz an der französischen Autobahn A31 Richtung Luxemburg. Die Wand ist 27 m lang, 1,4 m hoch und 15 cm dick und besteht aus fünf einzelnen Elementen à 2590 kg. Sie trägt die Inschrift „Thionville – Porte de France“. Der Beton weist die Mindestwiderstandsklasse C25/30 auf; seine Expositionsklasse wird XC4 sein. Für die Buchstabenstruktur wurden eigens Einlegeteile aus PVC angefertigt.

Eine Hybridwand aus Holz und Recycling- (RC-) Beton entwickelte das Unternehmen Innogration. Die Dämmfunktion übernimmt in diesem Bauteil die Holzständerebene mit Zellulosedämmung. Die Betonplatte hingegen fungiert als thermischer Speicher und als Dampfsperre der Fassadenkonstruktion.

Dadurch vereint die Hybridwand die jeweils positiven Eigenschaften der beiden verwendeten Materialien.

Die Hybridbauweise ermöglicht aufgrund der statischen Beanspruchung die Verwendung von Beton mit Zuschlag aus 100 % rezyklierter Gesteinskörnung. Die Holzbauteile und einzelnen Betonplatten werden im Werk vorgefertigt. Erforderliche ­Leitungen beziehungsweise die Leerrohre dafür sind bereits in dem Betonbauteil integriert. The Beton-Betz precast concrete plant has been a main partner in an EU project that promotes the development of concrete from recycled secondary raw materials.

Now the French project partner Vicat Cement has produced the first components with corresponding quality control. The precast concrete elements consist purely of recycled aggregates and cement. Together they

form a protective wall at a rest area on the French A31 highway in the direction of Luxembourg.

The wall is 27 m long, 1.4 m high and 15 cm thick and consists of five individual elements each weighing 2,590 kg. The concrete is minimum resistance class C25/30, and its exposure class will be XC4. Special PVC inserts were made for the inscription letter structure.

Innogration has developed a ­hybrid wall made of wood and ­recycled concrete. The insulation function in the component is provided by the timber-frame construction level with cellulose insulation, while the concrete slab acts as thermal storage and a vapour barrier for the facade construction.

The hybrid construction method enables the use of

­ oncrete with a 100 % recycled c aggregate due to the static load.

Timber components and the individual concrete slabs are prefabricated in the factory. Required pipes and ducts are already ­integrated in the concrete component. The facade wall was used for the first time in the energy-autonomous building type InnoLiving.

The guidelines provided by Graphisoft for its Archicad software cover the geometric quality of the building model and determine the accuracy and informa-

tion level of the different work phases and the processing stages – design, implementation planning, etc. – in which this information should be contained.

The guidelines can be adapted and supplemented.

S-Construct, an augmented reality app, aids with the installation of Schöck products. The components are placed on the construction site at the intended location and in the installation direction using a tablet or mobile phone. If necessary, the app displays the statically-permissible tolerance range for the installation and adjustments. Architects and structural engineers can check the planning and execution on their digital terminals. Photos of the installation document the “as-built” situation. The processing status of individual products can be tracked in the installation plan.

Das Ulmer Unternehmen Formicore hat sich auf den 3D-Druck von Architekturmodellen aus regenerativen Rohstoffen (Biopolymere aus Maisstärke oder Glukose) spezialisiert. Gedruckt werden Wettbewerbs-, Umgebungs-, Städtebau- und Präsentationsmodelle – direkt aus den 3D-CAD-Daten von Architekten und Planern und in nur einem Schritt. Nach dem Architekturdiplom 2000 an der Universität Karlsruhe absolvierte er ein Volontariat bei der Architekturzeitschrift AIT und war dort als Redakteur und Leiter Corporate Publishing tätig.

2009 stieß er zu Detail, wo er unter anderem die Zeitschriftenund Buchreihe Detail Green zum nachhaltigen Bauen und die Zeitschrift structure zu Themen der Tragwerksplanung verantwortet hat. Für die aktuelle Ausgabe hat er die verworrene Geschichte des Berliner Flughafen BER (Seite 8) kommentiert und den Technikbeitrag zu Häusern ohne Heizung (Seite 56) verfasst.

dunkelschwarz Das junge Architekturbüro mit Sitz in Salzburg wurde von Erhard Steiner (*1983), Hannes Sampl (*1985) und Michael Höcketstaller (*1984) gegründet. Die drei entwickeln Projekte in verschiedenen Maßstäben und Themenfeldern, die sich durch eine rohe und konsequente Formensprache auszeichnen. Geplant und umgesetzt haben die Architekten öffentliche Gebäude wie Kindergärten und Schulen, Sakral- und Kultur­ bauten aber auch Privathäuser, Wohn- und Gewerbebauten, sowie Sanierungen von Bestandsgebäuden.

Die Arbeit des Trios wurde mit diversen Architekturpreisen gewürdigt. Es erhielt unter anderem zwei Best Archi­tectsAuszeichnungen für den Kindergarten in Unterach am Attersee und die Bergkapelle Kendlbruck im Salzburger ­Lungau. Aktuell arbeiten das Büro an der Realisierung der ­Talstation Schafbergbahn in St. Wolfgang und an diversen ­anderen Projekten, wovon einige aus gewonnenen Wett­bewerben hervorgehen.
