Payson Jacobson's Triple Crown
by: Wendy Orth
Winning an event in a bowling tournament is every bowler's dream. Winning three events at a national level tournament as a junior bowler, well that is simply amazing. That is exactly what Payson Jacobson (15 years old) did this past summer at the National Youth Tournament in Indianapolis.
Payson is a junior bowler in the Prescott Valley Junior Bowlers League. Last spring Payson qualified for both Junior Gold and the National Youth Tournament through the State and Regional Pepsi Tournaments. Payson started with Junior Gold which consisted of bowling in four different bowling centers on four different oil patterns. Payson finished in the middle of the group of 700 bowlers. He says of his experience at Junior Gold,
“Going to gold was very benefi-
cial to my game, and I know what I need to work on moving on. I even learned a new release to work on which I am going to work on a lot this year. My biggest takeaway is that I need to be able to hit the ten pin no matter the oil pattern and my consistency in being able to hit the same board every time. Also just knowing when to adjust.”
Payson leveraged his experience at Junior Gold to really hit

the ground running at the National Youth Tournament a few days later. Payson started doubles with the front 10 for a 289 and finished with a 648. He followed that up with a 621 in singles and a 512 in team giving him 1781 (a 197 average) in all events. These scores were enough to earn Payson 1st place doubles, 1st place singles and 1st place all events in the U15 Handicap Division. When asked why he thought he did so well at the National Youth Tournament he replied “I did really well in the youth nationals because it was on a normal house pattern. And after all of those really hard oil patterns in junior gold switching back to a house pattern that was a lot more reliable it finally felt like the ball was doing what it was supposed to be doing. Even if I missed half a board to the left or right it would still go right into the pocket. There were also a lot fewer people so I

NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes
By Karen Blomgren, NAZB VP
The ground was a rumbling as you got close to Plaza Bowl in Prescott! 70+ ladies had PACKED THE PLAZA on Saturday, August 19th, 2023, for their final tournament of the 2022-2023 season. With the house being PACKED, and a yummy banquet to follow, we bowled an 8-pin No-tap tournament so we wouldn’t be late for FOOD! Nine ladies received their 300 pin for bowling (you guessed it) a 300! Those ladies were Karla Gibbons, Loretta Hood, Chris Healy, Karen Blomgren, Karla Gibbons (yup, she got TWO 300 games!), Bobbi Bowerman, Pam Frendian, Judy Salyers, & Dawn Lewelllen-Howle. Way to go ladies!
The officers & directors were ready, ready, ready for the ladies as they began to arrive. The ladies came to chat and the ladies came to bowl! Smiles were in abundance! The check-in table was ready as the ladies zoomed in. VP Karen Blomgren was standing in for an ailing Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole, and she collected tournament fees and renewal fees. She also handed out our schedule for next season - we are ready to go for 2023-2024! Next to Karen sat Prez Linda Tilley. She was handing out our 2023 pins along with some other Bowlerette goodies. She was also handing out tickets for the drawing for a free entry for September. Next to Linda sat Director Ann Monagle who was selling lots of purple 50/50 tickets, and next to Ann was Director Gracie Dominick who was selling orange raffle tickets for 3 great prizes including a gift certificate donated by our Pro Shop. Director Kay Monagle made sure we were all up to our tasks!
Next to the raffle prizes were the birthday goodies that VP Karen Blomgren had set up for the ladies for the August birthdays. Happy birthday to: Michelle Wells (8/7), Vera Maxwell (8/7), Laura Byers (8/18), Naomi Bronson (8/18), Linda Hughes (8/24), and Cathy David (8/28). Happy birthday ladies! Hope your special day was a super special one!
Time for some super special congratulations! Bowlerette Rita Holly qualified for the USBC Senior Championships held in Green Bay, WI. Rita placed 2nd in the Senior Championship for her division!
WAY TO GO RITA!!
And it’s time for winners! We’ll begin with the top winners in Division #1 (ladies with averages up to and including 145). The lady on top was Patty Willis (919). Congratulations Patty! She was followed by Monika Menser (911), Sande Bobango (895), Carol Hollis (883), Belinda Patrizi (876), Jen Tidroski (875), Shirley Stephenson (857), Jen Godbehere (841), Mary Robinson (836), Carol Belanger (831), Rita Holly (809), Dawna Solymos (800), Grace Dominick (798), Joan Comfort (790), & Michelle Wells
(784). Fifteen ladies out of fortyseven placed in Division #1. Truly awesome bowling ladies!!
Next comes the ladies in Division #2 (ladies with averages of 146 and above). Karla Gibbons (977) (2 300 games!) came out on top, top, top! Fantastic bowling Karla! She was followed by Bobbi Bowerman (873), Karen Hauswirth (899), Pam Frendian (888), Chris Healy (887), Cindy Humphrey (877), and Loretta Hood (874). Seven ladies out of twenty-one placed in Division #2! Ladies, you set our heads to spinning!
And if it’s more winners you want, then more winners you’ll get! Raffle tickets were located, readers were plopped onto noses and tickets were announced! Kay Monagle was the happy winner of a free entry to our September tournament! 50/50 and raffle winners came rather quickly as their numbers were announced: Jan
Bonifay, Shirley Stephenson, Mary Robinson, Naomi Bronson, Stormy Goudreault, Toni Sherrill, & Norma Cox! Enjoy those prizes!
The ladies will begin their 20232024 season on the road. We will travel to Camp Verde to bowl 3 regular games at Shake, Rattle, & Bowl located in Cliff Castle Casino. We’ll be there on Saturday, September 16th, 2023. If you happen to be in the area, please stop in and watch the fun! Bowling begins at 1:00 pm. You can’t miss us in our colorful shirts!
The NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes are a grand group of ladies of all ages from all over Northern, Central, & Western Arizona. Ladies do NOT have to be sanctioned to bowl with this group. If this sounds good to you, please contact Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole (928-227-1258). New members are always joyfully welcomed!

was a lot less nervous.”
Payson said his biggest takeaway from the National Youth Tournament is that he “knows (he) can bowl a 300” and that there is the Junior Bowlers Tour (JBT) where he can get more practice on those difficult oil patterns. He plans to work on his spare game and attend more tournaments to improve his physical and mental game this season.
All of Central Arizona USBC (CAUSBC) Association membership is very proud of what Payson accomplished and look forward to seeing what else he can do as both a bowler and a young man.
Payson would like to say “Thank you to everyone who helped to get me there!” Congratulations Payson.

Elias O'Hollaren and Avery Domaguin, both of San Diego CA, and Benjamin Lang of Bellevue WA, captured our most prestigious titles at the 2023 JBT Touring Players Championship, hosted by Strike Zone at Sunset Station in Henderson, NV.
After twenty games of grueling bowling on four different patterns, four scratch and handicap bowlers, and three U17 and girls scratch bowlers, advanced to their stepladder finals. In the scratch division, Andrew Guba won round one over Sebastian Huffman in a battle of Las Vegans 212-179. In the semifinal, O'Hollaren not only ended Guba's run but his JBT ca reer, as he beat him 221-197. An drew finishes with a dominant 11win season Tour-wide, coasting to scratch All-Conference Bowler of the Year in his final season of eligi bility.
Top qualifier and fellow Cali fornian Michael Marmolejo had edged Elias by just eight pins for the number one spot, and was looking to consolidate his So Cal Invitational win with back to back majors. However, he could not consistently find the carry he needed on the tough pattern, while O'Hollaren's late string was plenty for a 213-179 final decision and the TPC title, the 11th of his stillyoung JBT career.
Another California bowler, Ezekiel De Guzman, began the handicap finals with a win over Arizona's Evelynn Bollea. British Columbia's Annabelle Chui brought the international flair to the finals, but could not find the carry, as De Guzman won that match to advance to the finals. Benjamin Lang has gone a few years since his last win, but had a breakout tournament to qualify first for the semifinals, and hang on to that spot for the stepladder. The title match was lower scoring and came down to the final frame. When Ezekiel did not convert his tenth frame spare, it was heartbreak for De Guzman and elation for Lang, who claimed the TPC crown and $2,500 scholarship prize.
Defending champion Koryn Marquez looked to make it two in a row in Girls Scratch with a semifinal win over rapidly rising star Tamia Yeager. Top seed Avery Domaguin had other ideas though, as the spectacular San Diegan beat Koryn for the title and $400 top scholarship prize in addition to
her many other accolades.
U17 was often redundant in a good way this year as some of our best Tour-wide happened to be in this age bracket, and the TPC was no exception as all three U17 finalists made the regular scratch top 12. O'Hollaren beat Bud Sicard in a rematch from last year, to get to top seed Daryus Alo. Elias beat Daryus in a well-bowled final, and

The Agent Ong Open: A Bowling Extravaganza with Prizes Beyond Imagination!
Attention all bowling enthusiasts and aspiring champions! The highly-anticipated Agent Ong Open, powered by Complete Bowling Events, is just around the corner, and it's gearing up to be an unforgettable showdown on the lanes. With a jaw-dropping prize fund and thrilling highlights, this tournament promises to be an event like no other. Get ready to roll your way to glory!
1:5 Cut Ratio with a Minimum of $550 Low to Cash!
First and foremost, let's talk about the numbers that matter. The Agent Ong Open features a remarkable 1:5 cut ratio, ensuring that your chances of making it to the money are incredibly high. But here's the kicker – even if you don't clinch the top spot, you won't walk away empty-handed. The minimum cash prize is set at an impressive $550. That's right; this tournament guarantees that your skill and determination will be rewarded.
1st Place Prize: $10,000!
The grand prize that awaits the ultimate champion is a staggering $10,000. The glory of being crowned the best bowler in the Agent Ong Open is matched only by the substantial cash prize. Prepare to give it your all and aim for that top spot, because the rewards are monumental!
4th Place Prize: $2,000!
Even if you find yourself just shy of the championship title, securing the 4th spot on the leaderboard is no small feat. The consolation prize is a fantastic $2,000, ensuring that the competition remains fierce throughout the tournament. Every frame counts!
Maximize Your Opportunities with Strategic Entries!
Here's where your entry strategy can truly make a difference. Bowlers have the flexibility to choose when they want to compete. Bowl on Thursday for an
initial entry fee of $225 and reentries at $175. If you make the 1:5 cut, you'll not only be in the money but also have an extra entry in your pocket, putting you $150 ahead with just one complete entry and re-entry.
If you opt to start on Friday or Saturday, the initial entry fee is $275, with re-entries at $175. Even in this scenario, making the 1:5 cut ensures that you're ahead by $100, with two complete entries. In other words, a modest $275 investment could potentially result in a whopping $10,000 prize – nearly 40 times your entry fee!
Last Chance: The Desperado Squad!
For those who find themselves on the brink, the Desperado Squad offers a final opportunity to make the cut. To be eligible for the Desperado Squad, participants must have bowled in
at least two main event squads. With an entry fee of $100 and a 1:8 cut ratio, this is your last chance to secure a spot in the main event. The official cut score will be determined after the Saturday, 6:00 PM Squad, so don't miss this thrilling showdown. It's your chance for redemption and a shot at the grand prize!
Additional Tournament Highlights
But that's not all! The Agent Ong Open offers even more excitement:
"Sweep The Rack"
Sweeper:
On Thursday night at 8 PM, bowlers can showcase their skills in this intense tournament. With an entry fee of $100, three games of competitive bowling, and a 1:6 cash ratio, the firstplace winner is guaranteed a
substantial $1,500 prize. What's more, the "Sweep The Rack" Sweeper will use the same oil pattern as the main event, providing a valuable opportunity to practice under tournament conditions.
The Action Match: Witness an epic showdown between Robert Smith and Greg Thompson Jr. as they go headto-head in a high-stakes battle. With $1,000 per game and five games in play, this thrilling match takes place on Thursday night, October 19th, 2023, immediately following the Sweeper event.
All of this excitement will be live-streamed throughout the week by BowlStreamTV, ensuring that fans and supporters can follow the action from anywhere in the world.
The stakes are high, the prizes are colossal, and the competition promises to be fierce. Will you be the one to claim the title and the $10,000 prize? Don't miss your chance to be a part of this thrilling event! Mark your calendars, register today at www.agentongopen.com, and get ready to roll for glory!

A Pillar Finally Achieves Perfection; Erik McNair shoots 300
By Dustin J. Markowitz
The sport of bowling has always been one to feature a variety of tragedy and triumph. The world loves a good story and more often than not, it’s the horrors of the bowling community come to light. From centers being shut down, the loss of our heroes in the game and questions about the future of the sport, a day hardly goes by where one doesn’t get bombarded with despair and darkness. It’s with this fact that the stories of triumph mean so much more in these trying times. On August 29th, 2023, one of these stories occurred.
Erik McNair is a staple of bowling in Laughlin, Nevada. A competitive bowler originally from Southern California, Erik grew up from the junior program and learned the value of bowling both on and off the lanes. Upon mov-
Erik McNair
ing to the area, Erik worked hard to help bring together the bowling community. Through his business 928 Powersports, Erik has donated thousands of dollars for causes such as the growth of the youth and community outreach programs all the way to helping bring the PBA back to Laughlin. He is also the current president of
the Colorado River United States Bowling Congress and has volunteered countless hours of his time in effort to bring together a stable and successful association for those who bowl in it.
However, for all of his successes off the lanes, one thing had eluded him on the lanes and that was a perfect 300 game as an adult.
“The last 300 game I shot was when I was 17 years old,” explained Erik. “I was bowling the JAT at the time and I’m now 52. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been struggling so bad I just figured my chances were long gone.”
August 29th was a hot and balmy night in Laughlin when the Quickdraw Trios league took to the floor. A full house filled the summer league as Erik prepared to bowl on the end pair of 33 and
34. Jokes were always abound about the struggles on the end pair and Erik himself was no exception bemoaning the night ahead. However, there were no jokes in the air as Erik took out his Motiv Pride Empire and began the 2nd game with the front 10 strikes. While most bowlers would be excited to be in this position, a small sense of dread came over those who knew Erik. “I had the front 10 twice over the last several years and both times I ditched it on the 11th shot,” reflected Erik. “The mental part just got to me and I felt the same way here.”
This time would be different though as Erik buried the 11th strike and eventually shot his coveted 300 game.
While 35 years between perfect games may not be a record, the impact of this one certainly felt record breaking to those who saw it. The roar of those in attendance defined a moment as this pillar of the community finally achieved the goal he so often sought. For someone who loves the game as much Erik does, it was also a moment of relief and reflection on his view of the game. “The older I get, the more these things mean to me. Bowling is just such a wonderful sport and I’m happy I can continue to be part of it. I love this game and I love the people involved with it too.”

New Mexico Open; August 18-20, 2023 Third Championship Round A Charm for Francois Lavoie
Rio Rancho, NM: After finishing second twice, Francois Lavoie of Wichita added his name to the winner's list at last week's 19th New Mexico Open at Tenpins & More with a clutch tenth frame double for a 202-194 win over last year's runner-up, J D Nance of Rio Rancho.
Lavoie pocketed a tournament record $13,090 for his victory from the record $73,430 prize-fund.
The two-time US Open winner also added legacy to the previous winners representing Kansas in Devin Bidwell 2011 and Lonnie Waliczek 2012.
Lavoie, who will bowl for Team Canada in the November World Championships in Kuwait, savored the win after losing to Jakob Butturff in 2015 and Dylan Taylor (by a pin) in 2021.
In earlier matches covered live by Emil Williams BowlStreamTV. com, Fero Williams of Oklahoma lofted his way to a 208-169 win, relegating Kentucky's Steven Novak to fourth place and a $2,650 pay-day.
Nance, the second seed following a final bracket round loss to Lavoie, fired an eight-bagger to drop Williams to third 259-215. Williams received $3,250.
To win, Nance needed to beat Lavoie twice. It looked likely to go to O/T as the local southpaw, with a boisterous crowd on his side, was up by 24 pins after the French-Canadian left and missed a washout conversion attempt in the sixth frame.
Nance then left a 6-pin and 7-pin as Lavoie doubled with a different ball, to pull back to within twelve pins. Nance caught a little too much of the ball at release and left an unfortunate pocket 6-8 in the ninth as Lavoie spared - now one pin the difference.
Nance left and spared a wash-

Nance collected a check for $ 6,810 as back-to-back runner-up.
High game honors went to Arizona's Matt Jones whose 297 was the only game above a couple 279's on the special tournament lane condition set down by former PBA player, Mike Miller.
High average was authored by Michael Fitzgerald at 218.0 over 15 games, followed by Nance 217.25 over 20 games. Champion Lavoie carded 210.4 for his nineteen games.

He’s Back…
The Man Behind The Mask Wins $13,090 at New Mexico Open
by Dave Williams
During the COVID years I wrote about Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) member Francois Lavoie on more than one occasion, dubbing him “the face masked crusader,” a tongue in cheek reference to my childhood hero Batman.
Francois, or Frankie as his friends call him, was so dominant while wearing a mask that it’s surprising that his fellow PBA members didn’t fight harder to abandon the face mask rule at their earliest possible convenience.
His career peaked in 2021, when as a 6 year veteran of the bowling wars, he amassed a total of $375,145 in earnings. Since then his career has come back to earth, winning only $30,100 in 2022. I searched for an earnings record in 2023, but all I could find was a $3,000 victory in a regional event in Overland Park, Kansas (will the PBA website ever catch up?).
It’s as though the face mask gave Lavoie some sort of mystical strength, just like the Batman’s cowl. Frankie, a soft spoken French Canadian now living in Wichita, Kansas, seemed to have an advantage over the other competitors when wearing a mask, just like the caped crusader known as Batman.
Don’t Call Him A Christian Rocker
Another famous individual, Alice Cooper, who was born Vincent Furnier in Detroit, Michigan, in 1948, rose to fame by recording such songs as He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask), in 1986. Many interpretations of the lyrics have been made over the years, but one that seems fitting is Cooper’s addiction to alcohol. The repeated warning of “he’s back” could emphasize the return of the dreaded alcohol into Cooper’s life.
Cooper is actually the son of a clergyman in the Church of Jesus Christ. Once termed one of the hardest partying men in music, he credits his return to faith in the mid-1980’s with saving his marriage, and miraculously curing him from his addictions, according to an article that appeared at eightieskids.com.
His doctor told him that he would die if he continued to drink. However, if he stopped drinking, his internal problems, over time, would naturally heal. Cooper recalled that upon leaving the hospital, he went straight to a bar. “I sat down and I ordered a Coca-Cola, waiting for the craving (for alcohol) to come… and nothing happened.”
Cooper continues, “I had my CocaCola, and I left. I thought, by tomorrow this thing’s going to hit me like an avalanche. I’m going to wake up needing a drink. Thirty years later, I have never had that craving. Even in the most pressured situation, the thought of having a drink has never occurred to me. So I really believe that the Lord just took it away from me.”
Contrasting his newfound faith with
his profession, Cooper stated, “I don’t do Christian rock, but I’m a Christian that does rock.”
Lavoie Is Back With Win At New Mexico Open
After finishing second twice in the New Mexico Open, Lavoie proved the third time was the charm in claiming $13,090 for his victory from the record $73,430 prize fund. His runner up fin-
ishes came to Jakob Butturff in 2015, and Dylan Taylor in 2021. His loss to Taylor was by only one pin.
In the televised finals covered by Emil Williams and BowlStreamTV.com, Fero Williams of Oklahoma bested Steven Novak of Kentucky by a score of 208-169. Novak took home a paycheck of $2,650 for fourth place. Next up was local favorite J.D. Nance from
Rio Rancho, N.M., who put together a string of eight consecutive strikes against Fero for a 259-215 win. Williams garnered $3,250 for third place.
In the title match, it came down to the final frame, where Lavoie needed a double plus one pin to take home the victory. He promptly buried two strikes solidly in the pocket, and then a nine count on the final roll, for a 202-194 victory. Nance received $6,810 for his runner up finish.
What a clutch performance by Lavoie. Just like Alice Cooper, Frankie has demonstrated that he no longer needs the mask to be a dominant player in a professional bowling tournament.
