Roam Hicks Crushes TAT Monsoon Classic Pattern En Route to Title

TAT Desert Southwest director John Verbil; Cerbat Lanes owner Dan Nadeau; Champion Roam Hicks

True Amateur Tournaments made its first visit to Kingman, Arizona at Cerbat Lanes for the inaugural TAT Monsoon Classic held August 3rd & 4th, where Roam Hicks of Henderson, Nevada put on an impressive show from the first ball of qualifying all the way through to the Grand Finals, earning $5,200 for his efforts. The 42-year-old righty from the 215 & Under Division shot 296 in game 1 of the first qualifying squad on Saturday and never looked back, shooting 755 scratch to easily qualify in that squad.

The newly-designed 40-foot TAT custom pattern with a 3.86:1 ratio and 20.55mL of Kegel Fire oil produced generally higher scores than recent TAT regionals, but Hicks stood out from the crowd as he matched up exceptionally well with this pattern. However, cut scores across all divisions averaged 663, which is fairly typical for a TAT.

TAT Desert Southwest paid out

nearly $21,000 in cash prizes in this event along with many squad prizes such as Storm high-performance bowling balls, Coolwick bowling jerseys, B3 Performance lane packages, Tenpin Toolkit subscriptions, and a paid entry into the next TAT Las Vegas national event. There were 89 competitors who rolled 169 main event entries which consisted of six qualifying squads spread across two days with the TAT Finals on Sunday afternoon. After each two qualifying squads, a cut of 1-in-6 per division was made for the Sunday Finals with two cuts on Saturday and a final cut on Sunday.

The 27 bowlers advancing to the finals at 3 PM on Sunday were guaranteed at least $200 and bowled single-game eliminator matches against one to five other bowlers within their respective divisions, narrowing down the field until only one bowler remained in each division. Each division win-

Cirigliano Bowls a

300 During the Televised Finals of the PBA50 South Shore Classic

August 8, 2024, Hammond, INIt was a memorable show for No. 4 seed Dave Cirigliano, as not only was he making his PBA50 stepladder debut but he also bowled a 300 game. In the opening match, Cirigliano faced left-hander John Marsala, who led this tournament after qualifying. Marsala was able to put just two doubles together along with five spares and an open frame in the 10th for 201, as Cirigliano stole the spotlight. The right-hander from Phoenix, Arizona posted and repeated all 12 of his shots on the way to a perfect game, earning him a $1,000 bonus from the PBA.

“It is definitely one of those bucket list items I will tell you that. I really wasn’t nervous, which surprised me for my first time out here,” Cirigliano said. “There was a calm that came over me. Maybe my dad was watching from above.”

Cirigliano is no stranger to perfection. He is one of three bowlers to have rolled perfect games three times in the history of the USBC

August 4th the Strike Force Tour was at Bowlero Glendale with 104 total entries (80 qualifying and 24 parlays) paying out just over $6,000 in main and side event prize funds.

The finals would see Ming Shih put up his best game of the day to take home his 1st AHT SFT title for $525.00 (Not in Progressive Pot). Congrats to Chris Huskins on 2nd place for $650.00. Also congrats to Alec Johnson on 3rd place for $400.00!

ner was guaranteed a minimum of $1,000 and a shot at the $5,000 first prize in the Grand Final match between all of the division winners.

In the 50+ Senior Handicap Division, Perry Platko, 51, of Kingman made the cut with a 705 qualifying score (678+27) and reached the championship title match with a 257 (248+9), defeating Donald Wright of Palm Springs with 220 (204+16).

The winner of the 189 & Under Handicap Division was Isaias Galarza, 38, of Phoenix who qualified for the finals with a 689 handicap series (593+96) and advanced to the title match with a 223 (191+32) over Chuck Lucas of Surprise with 201 (165+36).

To reach the title match from the Scratch Division, Matt Brazeal, 30, of Kingman made the cut with a 692 qualifying score and advanced to the title match with a 209, defeating husband-and-wife challengers Brian Hare (206) and Adrienne Hare (189), of Rio Rancho, NM.

Eventual champion Roam Hicks rolled a 262 (255+7) to advance past Cat Rollins of Tempe with a 209 (186+23) and Kyler Adams of San Tan Valley with 165 (161+4) in the 215 & Under Handicap Division final match.

Each of the four division winners, guaranteed a minimum $1,000 payday, then faced off in a single-game match with handicap for the title and additional prize money. The title match came down to the final frames with any of three bowlers potentially winning the title, but Hicks persevered through pain in his forearm to make clutch spares that required Galarza to strike out in the tenth to force a tie, but he was unable to do so and Hicks came away with the victory.

Because Hicks was entered into the Progressive Pot, he not only won an automatic $1,000 bonus to achieve the $5,000 top prize, but he had a chance to win up to 70% of the remaining pot by throwing three strikes in a row across three lanes after his victory. He ultimately struck only once on three attempts to claim 10% of the $2,000 remaining in the pot, giving him a grand total of $5,200 for his victory. The remainder of the Progressive Pot will carry over to the next TAT Desert Southwest regional tournament, the TAT Fall Classic at Let It Roll Bowl in Phoenix.

Hicks, in recalling his performance, noted that he was getting over-under reaction with reactive resin during warm-up in the first qualifying squad and decided on his final practice ball to try urethane from the same spot on the lane. After seeing much better ball motion with that one shot, he stuck with the same urethane ball for the remainder of the event and

(continued from page 1)

felt that it gave him a “house shot” look with plenty of miss room that no one was seeing with reactive resin. He ended up throwing the first eleven strikes in game one of that set before finishing with a 6-count for 296, so it was a fortuitous last-minute ball change, indeed. He continued bowling other qualifying squads for which he had prepaid and averaged an astonishing 235 across the entire event, including the Finals, which was particularly impressive given that he was experiencing cramping with his right forearm during the Finals that forced him to ice his forearm between shots.

Hicks would like to thank TAT Desert Southwest and the TAT staff for running such a great and friendly tournament, and would especially like to thank his late mother, Leticia Hicks. This TAT win is for her! He also extends thanks to his dad, brothers & sisters, and good friends Kendrick, Buford, and Chris for all their support before and during the event, and to Krystine, who not only supported him during the event, but drove him home after his arm cramped up too badly to be able to even

drive.

TAT Desert Southwest would like to thank tournament sponsors Kingman Office of Tourism, Storm Bowling, Coolwick, TAT Las Vegas, B3 Performance, and Tenpin Toolkit for their generous prize giveaways during the tournament and for their support of True Amateur Tournaments. TAT also thanks Cerbat Lanes owners Dan Nadeau and Krista DeLeon, along with GM Patric Medeiros and the rest of their fine staff at Cerbat for their outstanding support of this event.

The next TAT Desert Southwest event is TATurday I, the first of a new single-day TAT event being held at Bowlero Via Linda in Scottsdale on September 14th. The next TAT Desert Southwest regional tournament is the TAT Fall Classic at Let It Roll Bowl in Phoenix on October 5th-6th. Flyers and entry forms for all TAT Desert Southwest events are available online at tatbowl.com/dsw.

Open Championships. He had a great ball reaction in his opening match, which allowed him to relax. Plus, after defeating Tom Adcock, Tom Hess and Parker Bohn III to make it to the show, he was enjoying the journey. “They definitely inspire me to keep working. Today was a good day,” he said.

In Cirigliano’s next match against Link, Cirigliano opened with a bad break leaving a 7-10 in the first frame. Link, who is also

right-handed, started with spare, strike, spare before getting three strikes in a row. Cirigliano went spare then a double before throwing his worst shot of the day leaving the 3-4-6-10 and getting just two. He got lined back up ending the match with seven straight strikes for 231. Link got a spare followed by three straight strikes and a single-pin spare to finish with 238 to advance.

Greenville, South Carolina to Host 2028 USBC Open Championships

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The United States Bowling Congress Open Championships will head to South Carolina for the first time in its storied history in 2028, as Greenville and the Greenville Convention Cen

ter will host the 124th edition of the event.

An announcement was made in April by USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy during the 2024 USBC Convention and Annual Meeting that Greenville was on the horizon for 2028, and the partnership was made official Tuesday during a press conference at Spare Time Greenville.

“We’re excited to officially announce Greenville, South Carolina, as the host of the 2028 USBC Open Championships,” Murphy said. “Our bowlers have expressed a desire to see the tournament head to new areas of the country, and our partners at VisitGreenvilleSC, the City of Greenville and Greenville County have been incredible in helping this come together.”

July 23rd announcement included remarks from Murphy, VisitGreenvilleSC President and CEO Heath Dillard and Greenville Convention Center General Manager Matt Hollander.

Several state and local officials from the City of Greenville, Greenville County and South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism also were on-site to welcome the tournament to

the area.

“Bringing world-class sporting events like this to Greenville has been a priority for our organization,” Dillard said. “We are looking forward to welcoming the USBC Open Championships bowlers and avid fans to enjoy all our community has to offer.”

The Open Championships attracts approximately 55,000 bowlers from around the world to compete each year. The tournament generates a prize fund of approximately $5-$7 million for competitors across three average-based divisions.

The tournament typically runs from March through July, with competition held daily. The event generates an expected economic impact of $70 million as bowlers make their way to the area to compete, explore and take in the local attractions.

The Open Championships has traveled all across the United States, but the tournament has only been within 200 miles of Greenville during its two trips to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1970 and 2003.

The 2024 Open Championships currently is wrapping up its 120th edition in Las Vegas. The 2024 event kicked off Feb. 23 and will conclude July 29, welcoming more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers to the South Point Bowling Plaza.

Championship; July 28, 2024

Kaven Massey and Hunter Jorgensen captured the most prestigious titles on Tour, winning the scratch and handicap divisions of the season-ending JBT Touring Players' Championship, hosted by Strike Zone at Sunset Station in Henderson, NV.

Defending champion Elias O'Hollaren won round one of the scratch division stepladder finals 230-205 over two-time Arizona Conference Bowler of the Year Cesar Padilla. Mac Kaurin, who in a rarity was the lone finalist from the Pac NW, looked to have the match won against Elias but a missed spare in the tenth flipped the script, with O'Hollaren escaping 204-193 to reach his second consecutive TPC title match.

Top seed Massey had only one previous win on Tour, but showed the best of the best how it's done all week, qualifying second on the two difficult patterns, staying there through the quarterfinals, and grabbing the #1 spot after the semifinals. Elias came out hot with a threebagger, but this time it was Massey turning the tables, recovering from an early open with a brilliant sevenbagger to put the match away. The 235-206 final was good for his second career JBT title and $2,800 top prize. He also won the 'check game' at the Celebration Dinner, helping him earn a whopping $3,520 on the weekend!

Two bowlers who had strong finishes to the season opened up the handicap stepladder finals, with Brianna Asfall winning a high scoring match over Pablo Ypina 266-243. Jorgensen then stopped Asfall in another big game 238-215 to advance to his first career title match. Top seed Noah Chargualaf, like Massey only a one-time champ, picked a great week to have the best JBT performance of his career, taking over the lead in the semifinals with great game after great game. That came to a halt in the final though, as Noah unfortunately struggled. Huntar took advantage of that, rolling a solid game to win the match and first career JBT title. With extras, he too crossed the $3,000 mark in earnings on the weekend!

Katelyn Abigania completed a(nother) dominant season with a title match win over Kendall Bollea for the Girls Scratch TPC title, crystal trophy, and $400 bonus. O'Hollaren

was consoled with the U17 win (yes he's doing all this and is still in U17) by beating JR Barczyszyn in a high scoring finale. O'Hollaren's great weekend continued with a win over Cesar Padilla in the 'T-12' rolloff, a bonus event held Monday for the top 12 all-conference point scorers, good for yet another $1,185 bonus. Do Hoon Kwon fired the only 300 game of the event, one of only 21 shot season-long on the Tour's demanding conditions.

Over $20,000 was awarded at the event, and that total was matched by an incredibly generous contribution from Strike Zone and Sunset Station, headed by the incredible Jerry Francomano, bringing the total awarded to a record-shattering $46,534 to the TPC

qualifiers of all ages and skill levels. Congrats again to all the bowlers who qualified for TPC, and the army of sponsors and helpers here and all season long that make this event and the full JBT season possible. What a finish to season 28, and season 29 is right on its heels! Check out the schedule at our website, email us to reserve spots, and come on down!

July 29, 2024: Well folks it was a fun one last night, we would see a season high 65 entries and after a bit of a hiccup the night went pretty smooth. In the finals we would see Andrew cain take 4th and Brandon Loss in 3rd. Then a great battle for first would see Ron Schloss beat Calvin Huggar in a exciting roll off! As always a huge thanks to all of you for coming, none of this is possible without your support and patience. Aswell a big thank you to Joey Shea for helping and Bowlero for hosting

August 5, 2024: Each week I am reminded how fortunate I am to host an event for such talented bowlers and how much I really do love it. Tonight was no different with an amazing lineup and great finals! Ron Schloss would go back to back and take 1st place again this week, Josh Kelsey in 2nd, Mike Hardesty in 3rd and Cortez Schenck in 4th. Thank you all so much for coming as always your support means the world! Thank you to Bowlero for hosting and Joey Shea for all his help.

August 12, 2024: Another Monday another awesome showdown, we would see 61 entries! A very well deserved win today for Keith Fung, who bowled phenomenally averaging 260 through 7 games. Timing Was Perfect. For Her Call Into MPUSBC Hall

Director Mesa Metro Association

Mesa, AZ. - As Sophia Petrillo of the television series 'The Golden Girls' would say: 'Picture It: Mesa, Arizona., Saturday April 14, 2018. It was the opening squad of the Arizona State Women's bowling tournament at Bowlero Mesa. And for one competitor, it would be a day that she would never forget. And neither would those who were in attendance watching the team event unfold.'

The bowling center had just completed a remodeling project, where new synthetic lanes were installed prior to the start of the Women's Open Championships. The new lanes hardly had enough time to get broken in, and just like that, an honor score was rolled on lanes 9 and 10 to kick off the tournament.

The series this competitor rolled included games of: 300279-224 for an 803 series. And to top this accomplishment off, this same competitor did it again the following week on Sunday April 22, 2018. During the singles and doubles event on lanes 35 and 36, she put together games of: 248300-268 for an 816 series.

"The 300 in team event was my first and I was blessed to have been bowling with and near many of my good friends who shared in the celebration. It was the first game and I remember I didn’t strike in practice and didn’t know what I was going to do to start," said Mandy Etem-Cirigliano, who was the competitor that rolled the 300 games. "To have my second 300 in the same event was unimaginable. That whole tournament was magical for me with all of the friends I shared the lanes with and I wasn’t really thinking about bowling. Just enjoying the experience."

It was moments like these that got her noticed by her peers, that would eventually lead to a nomination into the Metro Phoenix USBC Hall of Fame. The nomination and induction into the hall came on July 13, 2024, at the MPUSBC annual meeting.

"When I received the letter in the mail from the selection committee, I was quite overcome with emotion that I had qualified to join this prestigious group of bowlers in the Metro Phoenix USBC Hall of Fame," said Mandy, of when she found out she was going into the Hall. "It means a lot to me to join this prestigious group and to join my husband (Dave). My mom, (Debi), is also in the North County USBC Hall of Fame in California.

Giving this recognition even more meaning and connection with her."

She knew she had enough points built up from her accomplishments on the lanes, to get into the MPUSBC Hall. But it took a nomination from someone, and an approval from the board of directors to get her enshrined. That someone who nominated her for the Hall, was Shirley Braverman.

"Having my good friend and doubles partner, Shirley Braverman, who I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the lanes with for so many years was very special. She also wrote very kind words in the submission, and when she introduced me at the ceremony," she said, of her nomination. "Bowling with Shirley is an honor. She is a fierce competitor with an incredible heart for our sport and all those around her."

When it came time for her to give her acceptance speech, she wanted to make sure that she had all of her bases covered. Without having an emotional break down, while giving it.

"It was special to give my acceptance speech with my close friends and family there," she said, of her speech. "I was speaking to them and thanking them for all of their support so, I am grateful they were able to be there and be recognized for their contributions, too."

She also credits her husband, Dave Cirigliano, for her success on the lanes as well.

"When I met my husband Dave, he started giving me bowling lessons. This was awkward at first since I had already had numerous coaches in the approximately 25 years I had been bowling," she said, of his coaching. "I normally wouldn’t recommend being coached by someone you are romantically involved with, but he is the best and I wanted the best. Dave transformed my game and as I would say really taught me how to bowl. None of my accomplishments since we met would

have been possible without him."

According to Bowl.Com, she has had a composite average of 200+ since 2003-04. Her highest average to date, came during the 2016-17 season. When she averaged 226 for 90 games in the Ebonite Sun City Scratch Classic at Lakeview Lanes.

"The 2016-2017 season was very special. I bowled on a ladies team called the Strike Queens. This was the year of my highest average. I was bowling with three hall of famers and had to rise to the occasion!," she said, of remembering the 2016-17 season. "Surrounding myself with amazing coaches and talented bowlers has brought me success. I enjoy team events much more than singles events so, having great teammates who work together and encourage each other and have fun together is key. "The timing of getting into the MPUSBC Hall, was perfect. As I hope to have many years of enjoying bowling ahead of me. As of recently, I’ve had some health issues that have limited my ability to bowl and how I bowl. Hopefully, all of those will be behind us soon, and I can get back out on the lanes."

She says getting elected into any Hall of Fame, is a culmination of years of work and accomplishments. She feels the turning point in her career was winning her first Metro Phoenix USBC Queens at Lakeview Lanes.

"I hadn’t accomplished much before this and shortly after the Queens win, is when I started working with Dave and more success came," she said, of her first major title. "I’ve always looked up to my mom. She started bowling when we were really little and she was very good. I remember a picture of her winning the local queens' tournament and that picture was on my mind the day I woke up and won my first queens. Growing up. The three of us: (mom, Jolene, and I) went everywhere together. We traveled a lot

for bowling. Whenever we had a bad day on the lanes, mom would give us five minutes to be upset and then we had to let it go. I think this was good advice because it's not good to hold on to things. It won’t matter a year from now if you bowled bad today."

She has also become quite the fund-raiser off of the lanes in recent years as well. She got into raising money for 'Bowl For The Cure' after one of her co-workers was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I got involved in 'Bowl for the Cure', because my coworker was fighting breast cancer. I honestly thought we were going to have one bowling tournament. Then at the first event, people started asking about next year. So, I started planning to do it again and it's really grown from there," she says, of the two events she holds annually in Phoenix and Tucson. "We recently changed our focus to support all types of cancer and are now 'Bowl Over Cancer Arizona'. We will have the privilege of supporting cancer patients' rights here in Arizona! Our 2024 events are coming together and will take place November 2 and 3 at Bowlero Kyrene and Bowlero Tucson respectively."

2023 was also her best fundraising year to date. It got her national attention at the USBC convention in Las Vegas this past April.

"Last year, (2023) we raised $23,000 and that has been our highest to date. It felt really good to reach our highest fund-raising amount in our final year benefiting breast cancer," she said, of her efforts. To be recognized at the convention, was an amazing launching point for our team to now support all forms of cancer and cancer patients in Arizona." What would she like to accomplish in the game of bowling next? That remains to be seen.

"With some recent health issues, I’ve been having, I’m not bowling as much and have switched to bowling left-handed," she said. "This experience has allowed me to experience bowling as a beginner again and it has been so fun, and also very challenging. I hope to be getting back on the lanes more with whichever hand God gives me to bowl with. I’ve been missing all the fun and time with friends!"

And don't be surprised if the next tournament she wins, does in fact, come from her left-hand. We won't be.

Ten Years Before…

Ray Orf Suffered The Same Consternation As Glenn Allison

The date was February 6, 1972. Ray Orf rolled an 890 series. He was bowling in an adultchild league at Western Bowl in St. Louis, with his 7 year old son, Rich. Ray left a 10 pin in the first frame and converted the spare. He then rolled 35 consecutive strikes.

I can still remember the headline in Bowling Magazine. I must have read that issue at least a hundred times. According to an article written by Kevin Hong in 2015 (Feb.6, 1972: Ray Orf Bowls 890), Orf did not realize that he had eclipsed the previous all time 3 game set of 886, rolled by Allie Brandt from Lockport, N.Y., in 1939.

Ray was no slouch when it came to bowling. He won two national PBA titles — one in Dallas, Texas, and another in Tacoma, Washington. He finished second on four different occasions in the USBC Classic Team Event. In a city with the likes of Dick Weber,

Don Carter, Nelson Burton Jr. and Ray Bluth, Orf was named Bowler of the Year five times.

The 890 series was something that he should have been proud of accomplishing, but over the years it caused him much heartache, lost sleep and emotional ups and downs, stated Hong in his article. Roger Tessman of the ABC (now USBC) flew in from Greendale, Wisconsin, and filed a report saying that the lane conditions did not meet the standards in place for sanctioned competition in 1972.

Orf pled his case in front of the ABC’s High Score Committee during a meeting in Long Beach, Calif., but it was to no avail. He then

sued the ABC and settled out of court for an unspecified amount. Due to the terms of his agreement, Orf was never allowed to discuss the case nor reveal the size of his settlement.

Remembering Allie Brandt

While I was working for AMF, some of the employees at the Westerville plant in Ohio asked if I would join their team and compete in the annual USBC national tournament. AMF paid for everything, so how could I say no? My first USBC event was in St. Louis, in 1978. Rich Croci, owner of Boulevard Bowl in Petaluma, Calif., paid for all my expenses that year and our team did quite well. I remember receiving a key chain for my all events total of 1,907.

But beginning in 1980, I was part of the AMF team from Westerville. We bowled together 6 times during the decade, first at Louisville, Ky., followed by Memphis, Niagara Falls, Reno, Tulsa and Las Vegas. What’s interesting is that we usually bowled on Easter weekend, and we were often paired with a group from Lockport, N.Y., including Allie Brandt. He was a feisty man that stood only 5 feet 5 inches tall. We all stayed up for hours listening to his tales about bowling.

Brandt passed away in 1982, but not before we had a few years together at the USBC tournaments. Brandt’s 886 series (297289-300) in 1939 was a public relations bonanza for bowling, according to a post from J.R. Schmidt at bowlinghistory.wordpress.com. In addition to his small stature, Brandt weighed only 125 pounds. His size made the point that you didn’t have to be a muscle-bound giant to succeed on the lanes.

As the decades passed, Brandt’s series of 886 was analogous in many respects to Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs in baseball. Just like Ruth, you knew that if anyone ever beat Brandt’s total, there would have to be an asterisk. It’s interesting that while Ray Orf’s score of 890 in 1972 (four pins better than Brandt) was de-

nied, another famous bowler later that same year, John Wilcox Jr., rolled an 885 series (one pin less than Brandt), and that score was certified by USBC.

Just a few years after Brandt’s death in 1982, Tom Jordan rolled an 899 series at Nationwide Bowling’s Garden State Bowl in Union, New Jersey. That series (including a fourth game of 299) was approved by the USBC, almost 50 years after Brandt’s score. Today, there are a total of 39 perfect three game sets, including Robert Mushtare of Fort Drum, N.Y., who has done it twice.

Without getting into too much detail, the first 900 that was sanctioned in the modern era was in 1997. There were a total of three 900’s in the 1990’s, followed by 12 in the 2000’s, and 21 from 2010 to 2019. Since then, the number of perfect 900 series have dropped off dramatically, with one in 2021, and one in 2022 (bowl.com/records). What’s the reason? Less league bowlers, I guess, but it is nonetheless interesting how the number has dropped so much in the past few years…

Agent Ong Open Strike Back, October 17-20, 2024

Meet Matthew Zweig, the reigning champion of the Agent Ong Open, who is back to defend his title at this year’s “Strikes Back” event. With a track record of success and relentless determination, Zweig is ready to take on the competition once again.

Q: What are some of your most notable achievements in your bowling career?

Matthew: "I’ve achieved 21 collegiate team titles, a National Club Championship, and 2 PBA Regionals. Winning the inaugural Agent Ong title was a highlight, and finishing 5th at a National PBA event was a great experience."

Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Matthew: "Being named the 2021 PBA West Region Rookie of the Year. To make an immediate impact in my professional debut and be recognized with that honor was truly special."

Q: What do you consider your biggest asset as a bowler?

Matthew: "My biggest strengths are my creativity, commitment to making significant adjustments, and versatility in playing any zone the lane demands."

Q: How do you stay competitive with the evolving strategies in the sport?

Matthew: "I stay updated with what others are doing and make it my own. Keeping up with the young, no-thumb bowlers is a challenge, but I’m always seeking ways to stay competitive by focusing on my long-term goals."

Q: What would it mean to you to defend your title at the Agent Ong Open?

Matthew: "Winning it, of course! I’ve never come close to defending a title of this magnitude. To do so against the strong field we had last year would be something truly special."

Cheer on Matthew Zweig as he aims to repeat his success at the Agent Ong Open “Strikes Back” Event!

BowlTV PBA Regional Players Invitational Moves to Reno

The BowlTV PBA Regional Players Invitational will return to its old stomping grounds later this year.

The National Bowling Stadium (NBS) in Reno, Nev. will host the end-of-season tournament for the PBA and PBA50 Regional Tours.

The tournaments will be held Dec. 12-15, 2024 and feature a $125,000 total prize fund with a top prize of $15,000 and $10,000 for the PBA and PBA50 divisions, respectively.

“Reno Tahoe is absolutely thrilled to welcome the Professional Bowlers Association back to the National Bowling Stadium for the 2024 BowlTV PBA Regional Players Invitational,” Reno Tahoe President and CEO Mike Larragueta said. “The NBS has served the national and international bowling communities for nearly 30 years and, through this partnership with the PBA, the City of Reno, and Caesars Entertainment, we are proud to host the best bowlers in the country at the top bowling venue in the world.”

From 2015-2017, the National Bowling Stadium hosted the World Series of Bowling VII through IX. Legends from Hall of Famers Parker Bohn III and Tommy Jones, to today’s greats Jason Belmonte, EJ Tackett and Anthony Simonsen have won in the venue.

Most recently on the PBA Tour, the NBS hosted the 2021 U.S. Open and USBC Masters.

“Caesars Entertainment and our resorts in Reno (Silver Legacy, El-

dorado and Circus Circus) are honored to welcome the PBA back to The Biggest Little City in the World!” said Ken Ostempowski, the Senior VP and General Manager of the Silver Legacy, Eldorado, and Circus Circus-Reno. “Bowling is woven into the fabric of the Reno Community, offering the only National Bowling Stadium in the country. More importantly, the bowling community is part of our family, and we are excited to welcome them back home!”

The NBS and the Regional Tour have a storied history as well. Fifteen years ago, the 2009 RPI served as a qualifier for 2010-11 PBA Tour exemptions and spawned the careers of future PBA Tour champions Scott Norton and Ryan Ciminelli.

“We’re coming home,” PBA Tour Commissioner Tom Clark said. “The PBA and the National Bowling Stadium make beautiful music together. Thanks to the City of Reno, Reno Tahoe, and Caesars Entertainment, the PBA Regional program and this destination event will continue to grow.”

The top regional players in the nation will be competing for the Chris Warren RPI trophy, named in honor of the second-winningest regional player of all time. In addition to Warren’s 11 PBA50 Regional Tour titles, his 47 PBA Regional Tour titles are tied with Pete Weber for the most ever.

Patrick Dombrowkski is the twotime defending PBA RPI champion, while Bo Goergen is the defending PBA50 RPI champion.
