Justin Pluchino Conquers Tough Pattern at TAT Morongo Classic

Arizona-based TAT Desert Southwest brought TAT back to the California desert in TAT’s first California event since 2019, where Justin Pluchino of Reseda, California emerged with the victory and $5,190 in the TAT Morongo Classic held at Canyon Lanes at Morongo from May 31st to June 2nd. The 28-year-old righty from the Scratch Division qualified for the TAT Finals with a 687 series, the highest scratch set of any competitor in the tournament, and then surged to his 2nd highest game of the event (238) on the tough pattern to defeat the other three division champions in the TAT Grand Finals. The event included Arizona representation in every division, including Chandler bowler Kyle Ponzo in the Grand Finals.

The 44-foot TAT custom pattern at Canyon Lanes with a 38-foot drop brush and 22.4ml of volume and a 1.7:1 ratio proved to be very difficult for most competitors to conquer. Cut scores varied widely from squad-to-squad and division-

June 9th the Strike Force Tour was at AMF Chandler with 97 total entries (78 qualifying & 19 parlays) paying out over $6,500 in main and side event prizefunds.

Great final match as it would come down to the tenth frame to determine our winner. Jonah Tafoya would hit a few key strikes to take home his 2nd AHT SFT title and the $1,000 first place prize! Congrats to Kyler Adams on 2nd place and also Michael Lemos on 3rd place.

to-division, but the average cut score across all squads and divisions was 621, which is significantly lower than the typical TAT.

TAT Desert Southwest paid out over $30,600 in cash prizes in this event along with many squad prizes such as Storm high-performance bowling balls, Coolwick bowling jerseys, B3 Performance lane packages, Tenpin Toolkit subscriptions, and a paid entry into the next TAT Las Vegas national event. There were 121 competitors who rolled 185 main event entries along with 87 entries in the VIP event and 25 entries in the Friday mini-TAT sweeper.

This event again included a VIP side tournament as part of the entry fee with one VIP squad on Saturday morning and one on Sunday morning. VIP squads are always on a fresh oil condition, and the VIP tournament is a 2-game beatthe-board event where only the highest score (with handicap) counts and all divisions are com-

20th New Mexico Open

Rio Rancho, New Mexico: The New Mexico Open bowling tourna ment will offer record prize-money of more than $76,000 when it’s 20th edition hits the lanes at Ten pins & More in Rio Rancho, Au gust 16-18.

Defending champion and twice runner-up, Francois Lavoie of Wichita, Kansas will be trying to join Albuquerque’s John Young as the tournament’s only two-time winner. (Young won the first two events in 2004 and 2005).

First prize is also a record $ 13,500, based on 192 entries, with prize-money paid one in every four entries. Last year the field size was 211 in the 24-lane Center. In last year’s championship match, local bowler, J D Nance, who had finished runner-up to PBA Rookie-of-the-Year, Cortez Schenck the prior year, had a chance to send top-seeded Lavoie to overtime, but lost after the French-Canadian threw a clutch tenth frame double for the nod 202-194.

Former PBA national tour champion, Mike Miller is preparing another testing lane pattern, evidenced in the past nineteen years with winning averages typically in the 205-215 range. Lavoie carded 210.4 in 2023.

Hope for a New Mexico victory received a boost after DeeRonn Booker, the pro-shop operator at Starlight Bowling, Bar & Grill. won the USBC Masters in Las Vegas earlier this year. And of course, Nance will be back to go “one bet(continued on page 6)

bined. Bowlers use VIP squads as a low-risk way to test out the lane pattern on a fresh condition while still having a chance to win some money if they should toss a high game, while also getting a feel for how they want to play the lanes in the main event. Steve Basdakis of Beaumont, CA grabbed the victory and $500 for his 270 score (242+28), with Abel Barajas of Banning, CA taking second for $250 with a 267 (221+46). Low-tocash in the VIP tournament was 220 and paid $30.

In the Friday night sweeper, 25 competitors got a head start on the pattern in a “mini-TAT” format that consisted of one qualifying squad followed immediately by finals rounds for the qualifiers. In the Finals, Pat Lombardo of Phoenix, AZ grinded out the victory from the 50+ Senior Handicap Division with a 206 (204+2) and took home $1,000 for his efforts.

The main event consisted of six qualifying squads spread across two days with the TAT Finals on Sunday afternoon. After each two qualifying squads, a cut of 1-in-6 per division was made for the Sunday Finals with two cuts on Saturday and a final cut on Sunday.

The 30 bowlers advancing to the finals at 4 PM on Sunday were guaranteed at least $300 and bowled single-game eliminator matches against one to five other bowlers within their respective divisions, narrowing down the field until only one bowler remained in each division. Each division winner was guaranteed a minimum of $1,000 and a shot at the $5,000 first prize in the Grand Final match between all of the division winners.

In the 50+ Senior Handicap Division, D.A. Smith of Fontana, CA made the cut with a 625 qualifying score (625+0) and reached the championship title match with a 212 (212+0), defeating Reny Alkonga of Beaumont, CA with 170 (162+8).

The winner of the 189 & Under Handicap Division was Carl Mangaran of Covina, CA, who qualified for the finals with a 680 handicap series (563+117) and advanced to the title match with a 204 (200+4) over Elton Cainag of La Mirada, CA, with 189 (158+31)..

To reach the title match from the 215 & Under Handicap Division, Kyle Ponzo of Chandler, AZ made the cut with a 650 qualifying score (638+12) and advanced to the title match with a 213 (193+20), defeating Tyler Veneracion of Irvine, CA with 194 (185+9) and Jeffrey Taino of Ontario, CA with 192 (168+24).

Eventual champion Justin Pluchino advanced past Brandon Mori of Chula Vista, CA by a score of 199-147 in the Scratch Division final match.

Each of the four division winners faced off in a single-game match with handicap for the title. All the

finalists entered the Progressive Pot, which increases with each tournament entry and was carried over from the previous event, the 2024 TAT Spring Shootout in Mesa, AZ. For this event, the Progressive Pot stood at $2,900. By entering the Progressive Pot, the winner was guaranteed $5,000 for first place instead of $4,000 with a shot at 70% of the remaining $1,900 in the pot.

One of the key features of TAT events is that bowlers only compete against others in their own division for the entire tournament until there is only one bowler left standing from each division. In TAT Desert Southwest regionals, each division winner is guaranteed at least a $1,000 payday before facing off against one another in the Grand Final match, which is one game for the tournament championship. Each of the four arrived with a bowling résumé that showed experience in pressure situations, setting the stage for an exciting final match. Smith, a lefty who is well-known in the Southern California bowling community with countless 300 and 800 games to his credit, faced off against Ponzo, a rising star in Arizona who was captain of the ASU bowling team this past season and owns three AHT Strike Force titles, along with Pluchino, another well-known Southern California force with numerous 300 and 800s, and Mangaran, who has two ABT titles to his credit.

All the finalists threw the ball well in the championship game, with only three splits and one missed single pin in the entire match, despite the difficulty of the pattern. The key to the match ultimately proved to be who could string strikes together, and Pluchino, who strung a 5-bagger across the middle of the game, was the only competitor to throw more than a double before the 10th frame. Nevertheless, the outcome was very much in doubt until near the end of the game, when eventual 2nd place finisher Mangaran was unable to convert a 3-10 in the 9th frame. Pluchino followed that with a Brooklyn strike to open the 10th and a spare to seal the victory.

Because Pluchino was entered into the Progressive Pot, he not only won an automatic $1,000 bonus to achieve the $5,000 top prize, but he had a chance to win up to 70% of the remaining pot by throwing three strikes in a row across three lanes after his victory. He ultimately struck only once on three attempts to claim 10% of the $1,900 remaining in the pot, giving him a grand total of $5,190 for his victory. The remainder of the Progressive Pot will carry over to the next TAT Desert Southwest event, the TAT Monsoon Classic at Cerbat Lanes in Kingman, Arizona.

Recalling his performance, Pluchino, a first-time TAT partici-

pant who recently threw his high series of 866 (266-300-300) at Winnetka Bowl, had observed that the people who played to the right could get to the pocket but were leaving weak 10s, so he resolved to play inside everyone. He threw a Storm Journey at 500 surface the entire event. He stated that his inside line to the pocket was giving him both the high flush strikes and the mixers throughout the tournament, and this was evident to spectators in the Grand Final match.

Pluchino thanks TAT Desert Southwest for bringing TAT back to California, and is looking forward to bowling the TAT Summer Classic in Las Vegas in July. He would also like to thank his good friend George Ritter for bringing him to this event.

TAT Desert Southwest would like to thank tournament sponsors Storm Bowling, Coolwick, TAT Las Vegas, B3 Performance, and Tenpin Toolkit for their generous prize giveaways during the tournament and for their support of True Amateur Tournaments. TAT also sends a heartfelt thanks to Canyon Lanes GM Paula Vidad, along with her outstanding staff, plus Morongo Resort Casino and Spa for their wonderful support of this event in so many ways. TAT looks forward to coming back to Morongo again in the future.

The next TAT event is the TAT Summer Classic in Las Vegas in early July, followed by the next TAT Desert Southwest tournament, the TAT Monsoon Classic in early August at Cerbat Lanes in Kingman, Arizona. Cerbat is under new ownership and they are very excited to be bringing the TAT to their refreshed center. Enter all TAT events online at tatbowl.com.

JBT Results; Gold Coast; June 8, 2024

Elias O'Hollaren and Isabella Smith wrapped up the Mojave Conference regular season with big wins at Gold Coast Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

Zach Greim made a successful return to the scratch division stepladder finals with a 227-178 win over last week's Mountain Invite runner-up John Green. Zach then stopped #2 qualifier JT Verde to advance to the final game. Top seed and good friend Elias O'Hollaren awaited. Elias and Zach have battled often since both were in U17 (Elias still is), but it was O'Hollaren who both owned this event, firing the only 300 game of the day to take a lead he never relinquished, and got the break in the title game, squeezing out a narrow 206-204 win. It's O'Hollaren's 18th career JBT title, the active leader in that category with a long time left to go!

TJ Hardy won an exciting round one against Nicholas Dorn, 231220, but the fourth place finish was all Dorn needed to qualify for the next day's Invitational- no small feat against an 80 bowler field. Newcomer Smith then threw all three strikes in the tenth to shut out Hardy 249-223 and advance to the title game. Top seed Dallas Zuniga had outpaced the high scoring field all day, leading six of the eight rounds. However, he could not find the look on the championship pair, while the rapidly improving Smith showed no signs of slowing down. Isabella win the game going away for the first title of her JBT career in her first attempt!

O'Hollaren doubled his pleasure by beating JT 199-196 for the U17 subdivision win, while Ashley Soto beat Lindsay Greim in a wonderful Girls Scratch final 233226. Big thanks to Louis and the team at Gold Coast for a great job hosting our Tour for the first time in quite a while! The field is now set for the 2024 Mojave Invitational, with $1,000 top scholarship prizes awaiting the champs! Gold Coast; Final Results and Scholarship Winners; June 8, 2024

Pluhowsky takes home Music City Classic title to conclude week in Smyrna

June 04, 2024, SMYRNA, Tenn.

- In a stepladder full of Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour veterans, Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, won the PWBA Music City Classic at Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tennessee, bringing a thrilling conclusion to the PWBA Classic Series – Nashville.

Pluhowsky was the No. 1 seed in the stepladder finals after ending match play with a 6,188 total, including 540 bonus pins for her 17 wins and two ties. She faced off against Stefanie Johnson of McKinney, Texas, in the title match.

Johnson started off the match with two opens to fall behind early as Pluhowsky kept things clean and began to pull away even as Johnson started to strike later in the match. Johnson left a 3-10 baby split in the ninth frame and failed to convert, leaving Pluhowsky the opportunity to end the match with a strike.

Slight disaster struck for Pluhowsky however, leaving a split of her own and bringing silence in the building with her own failed conversion and needing any mark in the 10th frame to clinch the title.

Pluhowsky did what she has done her entire career and threw a great shot that went a touch high in the pocket, leaving a 6 pin. She quickly picked it up and threw a strike in the fill ball to end at 204 and leave Smyrna with her second title of the season. fourth PWBA title overall and the $12,000 top prize. Johnson struck all three times in the final frame and ended with 193. She earned $6,000 for the runner-up finish.

The stepladder finals began with Missy Parkin of San Clemente, California and Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona. Both competitors went strike for strike with each other, but two straight opens of Parkin in the seventh and eighth sunk her chances, as Coté went nine straight strikes. Coté ended up winning 279-223, leaving Parkin with a fifth-place finish and $2,600.

Waiting for Coté was Singapore’s Cherie Tan, who already had a first-place and runner-up finish during the Classic Series and was looking for her second straight win.

Tan started off hot with four strikes in the first six frames and Coté opening in the second frame, but Coté started to claw back with three straight strikes in frames four through six. A light hit in the pocket for Coté left a 2-5 combo, which she converted, but Tan continued to strike and eventually lock up the win with a 236 to move on to the semifinals. Coté ended with 204 and bowed out with a fourth-place finish, earning $3,000.

The semifinals pitted Tan and Johnson against each other, and had the feeling of being a highscoring match before they started bowling with how well both competitors had been doing prior to the

Shannon Pluhowsky

stepladder.

Johnson quickly pulled ahead with seven straight strikes after a spare in the first frame, while Tan could not carry the corner pins and missed two single pin spares early to fall behind. Tan never had an opportunity to catch Johnson, even after ending with the final five strikes for 214. Johnson had already locked up the match by the eighth frame and finished with 257, leaving Tan with her lowest finish of the week in third place and earning $4,000, and Johnson moving on to the title match against Pluhowsky.

The win was extra sweet for Pluhowsky, as her family was there to see her take home the title.

“My youngest daughter and step-son have never seen me win so it was special to have them here along with my mom and oldest daughter, it’s nice to share the success with them,” said Pluhowsky.

Green Bay to Host 2025 Junior Gold Championships

Arena-Style PWBA TV Finals Viewing Experience Added to Opening Ceremony

ARLINGTON, Texas – Green Bay, Wisconsin, will welcome thousands of the nation’s top youth bowlers and their families as the host site for the 2025 Junior Gold Championships.

In addition to the Junior Gold Championships, all United States Bowling Congress Youth members will have the opportunity to compete in the Bowling.com Youth Open Championships, which will be conducted in Green Bay, Wisconsin, during a time frame very similar to that of Junior Gold.

The 2025 Junior Gold Championships will run July 11-19 at multiple bowling centers in and around Green Bay. The Youth Open Championships will take place July 9-11, 18-20 and 26-27.

Junior Gold week will kick off with fun-filled activities like the Product Showcase and trade show, which will take place at the Resch Center & Resch Expo in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin.

As an added treat, the 2025 Junior Gold Championships traditional Opening Ceremony will feature a special conclusion on the evening of Sunday, July 13, when up to 10,000 competitors, their families and bowling fans will have the opportunity to attend the live TV finals of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Green Bay Open, which will be contested

in an arena setting at the Resch Complex. All rounds leading up to the stepladder finals will be contested at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley from July 9-12.

Although Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the historic Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley have hosted several elite-level bowling tournaments over the years, the 2025 event will mark the first time the Junior Gold Championships will be contested in Wisconsin.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the 2025 Junior Gold Championships in the Green Bay area and throughout the region,” said Brad Toll, President and CEO of Discover Green Bay. “We’re sure the competitors, family members and fans will have a truly unique experience. We can’t wait to share our great community on the lanes and beyond.”

In addition to The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley, host centers for the 2025 Junior Gold Cham-

pionships will include each of the following locations: Bowlero Superbowl Family Entertainment; Bowlero Sabre Lanes; Buzz Social; Dale’s Weston Lanes; Revs Bowl Bar and Grill; Riviera Lanes,

and Rolling Thunder Lanes.

“Over the years, Green Bay, Wisconsin, has proven itself to be incredibly supportive of competitive bowling and more than capable of hosting the sport’s biggest tournaments,” said Gary Brown, Senior Director of Short-Duration Tournaments and Collegiate Bowling. “As such, it’s fitting that Junior Gold, the biggest, mostprestigious tournament in youth bowling, will take place in an area steeped in so much tradition.”

Testimonials: Why do our members enjoy being a part of the Arizona Bowlerettes? When asked, this is what they said: The camaraderie and enjoyment of seeing the different Bowlerettes each month brings me pleasure. love to see the different types of tournaments and bowling centers each month. Bowlerettes has been a big part of my life for more than 25 years. There is so much more to being a member of the Arizona Bowlerettes than just the love of bowling. look forward each month to meeting new members, and seeing and talking with current Bowlerettes that have met over the years. It’s fun and challenging to experience the different tournaments & lanes conditions at bowling centers other than my home house. have only been a Bowlerette for a few years but have bowled at so many centers never would have had an opportunity to bowl in if not for AZ Bowlerettes. My average has improved due to bowling on a wide range of conditions. It’s low maintenance too, only go to tournaments I’m able to, and only pay for the tournaments bowl in. The best thing is all the new friends I’ve made through AZ Bowlerettes.

20th New Mexico Open To Set Records

The Mackie Tournament Magic

It’s hard to improve upon perfection, but it seems that’s what proprietor Steve Mackie does every year when staging the New Mexico Open at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. This year’s event is scheduled for August 16th-18th.

Defending champion Francois Lavoie of Wichita, Kansas, will be trying to join a local star from Albuquerque, John Young, as the tournament’s only two time winner. Young was victorious in the first two events back in 2004 and 2005.

Lavoie, who was twice runner up in the New Mexico Open before finally taking home the championship last year, will join a field of more than 200 keglers shooting for a record $76,000 in prizes, with a first place prize of $13,500. Those prizes are based on a total of 192 entries in the event, but Mackie is confident the field will surpass 200.

You have to wonder if Mackie’s tournament will someday be a part of the PBA national tour, with total cash and prizes already knocking on the door for inclusion on the PBA senior circuit. During the 2023 season, the PBA50 Tour averaged $83,333 in total prizes per event.

In last year’s championship match, local bowler J.D. Nance, who had finished second to Arizona’s Cortez Schenck the previous year, battled Lavoie but lost when “Frenchy,” a native Canadian, doubled in the tenth frame for a 202194 victory.

Last year’s 3rd and 4th place finishers, Steven Novak of Louisville, Ky., and Fero Williams from Oklahoma City are also among early entrants. Another local favorite is DeeRonn Booker of Albuquerque, who won the USBC Masters in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Mackie reports that following eight game qualifying rounds, the top 32 will return on Sunday for doubleelimination bracket play, until only four remain… the unbeaten leader and three from the loser’s bracket, to contest the top four prizes.

Steve Mackie began his legend as a tournament manager while working for AMF in his native country of Australia. I would often hear of his incredible turnouts and marvel at his brochures and pamphlets, including the one I shared last year… Mackie’s ten page brochure used to attract sponsors for the 1984 Bowling World Cup in Sydney.

Steve was quite impressed that I had kept that brochure for more than 40 years. I guess no one ever told Mackie that I’m a bit of a hoarder when it comes to bowling memorabilia. Mackie asked if I might send the colorful handout his way, since he didn’t have a copy. I obliged by sending him the original… after I made a copy for my Bowling Warehouse Museum in Edison, N.J.

Mackie has not lost his touch in those 40 years. You can ask any of the participants and they will confer that Steve’s tournaments are first class when it comes to details. That includes the lane conditions which are provided by former PBA National champ and touring professional Mike Miller. Winning scores for the past nineteen years have ranged from 205-215, making everyone competitive. Last year’s winner Lavoie came in with a 210.4 average.

Brain

Emil Williams Jr. Will Be Back

Mackie confirmed that Emil Williams Jr. from BowlStreamTV.com will be on hand to cover all the action from start to finish on three different pairs of lanes, as well as the final double-elimination brackets on Sunday. Emil can be heard on the PWBA televised contests and provides a commentary reminiscent of the great announcers in bowling history.

On hand during the BowlStreamTV telecasts will be color commentary by Mike Miller, Dana MillerMackie and Steve Mackie. That’s a powerful lineup, to say the least. In addition, radio station KDSK 92.9FM will provide a two-hour live remote on opening day. Tournament entry forms are available at www.tenpinsmore.com, or call (505) 891-4462.

NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes

We were off to Camp Verde! It was a lovely short drive for the ladies coming from Prescott! On Saturday, May 18th, 2024, the ladies gathered at Shake, Rattle, & Bowl, located inside of Cliff Castle Casino, to bowl 3 regular games. We appreciated that the bowling center was totally ready for us as the officers, directors, and many of the ladies were there as early as 9:30A.M.!!

Check-in officially began at 10:00, and the ladies were anxious to get checked in and begin socializing with each other! Sec/ Treas Pam Cirasole was checking the ladies in and getting them entered for next month. Directors Ann & Kay Monagle were busy, busy, busy selling raffle tickets to the three great raffle prizes created by Prez Linda Tilley. Sgt. Cotton Bowl Roof Collapses; Tragedy Avoided at CG's Only Bowling Alley

Reprinted with permission from Casa Grande Dispatch

CASA GRANDE — The iconic Cotton Bowl bowling alley on Pinal Avenue is no longer in operation after the main roof collapsed on Monday evening.

Cotton Bowl staff alerted the Casa Grande Fire Department on Saturday morning that something was amiss with the structure and firefighters inspected the property before city staff condemned it.

Before Monday evening’s collapse, firefighters and staff were able to salvage some of the inventory and personal belongings. No one was injured or inside the building during the collapse and there were no fires or gas leaks as all of the utilities were turned off on Saturday, according to CGFD. There were no reports of adjoining properties damaged by the collapse.

As of Tuesday, the building was surrounded by barrier tape with the front and side entrances fenced off with “closed” signs. Pools of water could be seen to the rear of the property.

Fire Chief Dave Kean told PinalCentral that the building came down at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Monday and that a seri-

ous tragedy had been avoided thanks to the heads-up from Cotton Bowl staff and quick reaction from his fire crews. Kean said he was personally on-site to assess the situation.

“We received a call on Saturday morning to come out and take a look at some concerns that somebody had. Our officers went out and looked at it and then they actually called me out to look at it,” Kean said. “After I looked at it we went ahead and got a city building official out there because we wanted to condemn the building.”

Kean said the curved roof structure was a “bowstring truss roof,” which has been described as a

“fireman killer” and that it is rarely used in modern architectural practices.

“When one portion of the roof fails it tends to make the entire roof fail and that’s exactly what ended up happening here, that was my fear,” Kean said. “After we got everybody out we helped them get some belongings out of the safe areas of the building within 24 hours. By 48 hours, it ended up failing entirely.”

An emotional Robin Keeling told PinalCentral she and her family, who have operated the business, were shocked by the roof collapse.

“We were very conscientious

once the Fire Department showed up on Saturday about not letting anybody in and they were very helpful in safely escorting us as we tried to retrieve some of our goods,” she said. “Only firefighters and family members were allowed to go in. Some patrons were curious, but other than that nobody went in.”

Keeling said it is too early to decide what the family will choose to do with the building.
