Tina Williams First With 300 at Both USBC Open and Women's Championship

LAS VEGAS – Tina Williams of Pflugerville, Texas, has created a new entry in the record books for both the United States Bowling Congress Open and Women’s Championships after her performance Tuesday at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

She is the first competitor to record a perfect game at each national tournament after starting her doubles set at the 2024 USBC Open Championships with 300 on the way to a 750 series (300-227223).

Williams had her perfect game at the Women’s Championships during doubles at the 2021 event in Reno, Nevada. She finished that trip her highest all-events total through 19 trips to the tournament (2,195) and posted four finishes in the top 15, including a fifth-place

June 30th the Strike Force Tour was at AMF McRay with 103 total entries (74 qualifying and 29 parlays) paying out just over $6,000 in main and side event prizefunds. A nail biter Finals match as it would all come down to the tenth frame to determine our winner. Alex Benton would get a much needed strike to take home his 1st AHT SFT title and $1,050.00 first place prize. Congrats to Michael Pospeshil on second place for $500.00. Also, congrats to Dylan Taylor on third place for $300.00.

The 43-year-old right-hander followed suit with her performance this week at the Open Championships, recording her top all-events score through 16 appearances

with 2,048. She added 718 in singles and 580 in team.

The former Team USA member and three-time National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association AllAmerican at West Texas A&M also made the appearance one to remember by joining her husband – two-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour champion Stu Williams – with a 300 this year at the Open Championships.

Stu rolled his 300 on May 10 during his second game of singles for an 805 series (currently third in Regular Singles). The performance helped him into second place in Regular All-Events with 2,245, and he’s currently fourth in Regular Doubles with David Bartlett of Bloomington, Illinois (1,476).

JBT Results; Arizona Invitational; Let It Roll

Bowl; June 29, 2024

Aliyas Sargento and Brayden Sibilla earned $1,000 scholarships each as champs of the 28th annual JBT Arizona Invitational, hosted by Let It Roll in Phoenix.

After five games of qualifying, sixteen scratch and handicap bowlers advanced to physically and mentally grueling triple-elimination matchplay. Cayden Matherly bowled great to nab the top seed, and survived seven, bowing out to Dylan Donahue. Donahue and Asher Toberer exited in the next round, leaving Daryus Alo and Brock Bivins to play, in effect, a semifinal game while Sargento earned a much needed bye. Brock narrowly beat Daryus in that match to set up the one-game finale. Aliyas got a bad forearm cramp right before the start of the match, but bravely carried on, with the reduced power actually seeming to work in his favor on the demanding condition. Bivins, meanwhile, put up an outstanding 235 game, but Sargento wowed with a front-seven, 259 performance to capture the title, and an amazing bookend to his season, having won Desert Open to start it off last August.

Sibilla, already with a third place finish in this season's Mojave Invitational, qualified 8th here and caught fire, going through five rounds undefeated. In round seven, Thomas Glass and Isaiah Pino were eliminated, but the fine performances locked up a TPC berth for Thomas, and Bowler of the Year for Isaiah! With four bowlers left Abi Hunt bowed out in round eight, leaving a similar setup as scratch had, with Sibilla (now with two losses) enjoying a bye, while Pablo Ypina eliminated tough Christian Ortega to set up the final. Ypina was looking to match Aliyas as Desert Open and Invite dual champs, but did not have a great look on the final pair, and Brayden remained strong, for the win, and third JBT title of his excellent season!

Toberer's fine day included a win over Aiden Ruiz-Jimenez for the U17 subdivision win, while Mackenzie Paige beat Jadeyn Mabry for the Girls Scratch victory.

Cesar Padilla had a quiet matchplay round, but was uncatchable, coasting to his second consecutive scratch Bowler of the Year award. Huge thanks as always to the Let It Roll team for being

fantastic hosts for our Tour every time. Top bowlers now advance to the JBT Touring Players Championship, where the best of teh best will compete for our Tour's most prestigious title.

NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes

We got to bowl on brand new lanes and approaches! Lucky us! On Saturday, June 15th, 2024, the ladies began to arrive (some as early as 9:30!) at Plaza Bowl in Prescott! The ladies were excited, the staff was excited, and the place was sparkling! We were gathering to bowl 3 regular games on those brand new lanes!. Officers, Directors, and Bowlers were ready to CHECK IT OUT!

Check-in officially begins at 10:00 (but we’re always ready early!), but the ladies began arriving early as they came from all over State 48 to bowl! Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole was the first to greet them as she checked them in and got them to their lanes! Directors Ann & Kay Monagle were busy selling raffle tickets for 3 fab raffle prizes created by Prez Linda Tilley! VP Karen Blomgren was zoom-zooming around taking pics as Sgt. At Arms Pam Frendian was in CA celebrating birthdays. It’s always a busy, fun time, We don’t need music: the ladies’ voices as they greeted each other was musical enough!

We would like to wish the following NAZB members a superduper happy June birthday: Jan Watts (6/7), Kathy Lening (6/9), Jessica Harlow (6/10), Linda Nelson (6/12), Shirley Wiseman (6/12), Ann Monagle (6/13), Valerie Ames (6/13), Belinda Patrizi (6/19), Dawn Leuellen-Howle (6/22), and Judy Salyers (6/30). Now, let’s see how the ladies did on those Brand New Lanes! In Division #1 (ladies with averages up to and including 145), Delma Largent (710) came out on top, top, top! Congratulations Delma! She was followed by Stormy Goudreault (654), Patty Willis (652), Monika Menser (640), Michelle Broxmeyer (637), Toni Sherrill (625), Ann Monagle (619), Victoria Gassett (616), Carol Belanger

Twenty-two ladies out of forty-five placed in Division #1! That’s a great bunch of ladies! Congratulations!

Now, we’ll move on to the Division #2 (ladies with averages of 146 and above) ladies! The top bowler in Division #2 was Karen Blomgren (635)! Way to go Karen! She was followed by Cindy Humphrey (632), Deb DiFerdinando (622), Rita Holly (590), Karen Freyslaben (586), Belinda Patrizi (577), Norma Gillett (571), & Dawn Howle (571). Eight ladies out of fifteen placed in Division #2. Way to go ladies!

And we’re not done with winners! Norma Cox was thrilled to have her ticket drawn as the winner of the free entry for July’s tournament! Yippee! The following ladies put on their readers, checked their tickets, and came zooming up (loudly) as the winners of the raffle prizes: Kay Monagle, Kathy Houchin, Toni Sherrill, Karla Gibbons, Carla Little, Sande Bobango, and Karen Blomgren! Gotta love it!

Next month will find us again staying local (at least it’s cooler here!), but we’ll be moving to Prescott Valley to bowl 3 No-tap games at Antelope Lanes on Saturday, July 20th. We always bowl on the third Saturday of the month, and our tournaments always begin at 11:00A.M.

We’re an awesome group of ladies of all ages coming from all over State 48! Ladies do NOT have to be sanctioned to join this great group. They also DON’T have to be currently bowling in a league! If this sounds of interest to you, please contact Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole (928-227-1258). New members are always joyfully welcomed! Come along and join the fun!

“Our goal is always to give youth bowlers the best experience

possible, and we’re confident that the USA Bowling program will do so once again during the 2025 tournament season,” Barton said.

To register teams for a regional event, visit BOWL.com/USABowlingRegionals.

The winning team in each agebased division at each regional qualifier will earn a spot at the national event, which will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, right before the Junior Gold Championships.

Each event will include a seed-

ing round and match-play bracket. Teams will bowl eight round-robin Baker match games to determine seeding for the double-elimination bracket at each regional event. Match play will be best-of-three matches until a winner is determined.

USA Bowling lineups will consist of four players using a modified Baker format. Bowlers one and two will each bowl three frames (15-9 and 2-6-10, respectively) while bowlers three and four each bowl two frames (3-7 and 4-8).

Bowling On The River

A recent article at Dr. Jake’s Bowling Blog got me to thinking about what a glorious time it must have been in the 1930’s and 1940’s along the Russian River resort area in Northern California, when popular movie stars of the day would gather at the bowling centers located in Rio Nido, Guerneville and Monte Rio during the summer months.

There was Fred MacMurray, Raymond Burr, Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman, to name a few of the frequent stars to visit the bowling lanes along “The River.” MacMurray and Burr even had summer homes there. Somewhere in my bowling museum warehouse I have a shot of Reagan, Wyman and two other young silver screen stars sitting at a score table that was believed to be taken at River Bowl in Guerneville. Perhaps one of you has this shot, or can find it on the internet?

Dr. Jake’s article features the St. Paul House Hotel in Shakopee, Minnesota, with 8 bowling lanes. Founded in 1854, the hotel operated for more than 111 years in the popular resort area located southwest of Minneapolis. The lanes were added in 1936 when a major renovation was undertaken by a new owner, Frank Wampach, according to scottcountyhistory.com. Fire destroyed the hotel and bowling lanes in 1965, and the building was never restored.

The bowling center along the Russian River resort area that I remember so well was River Bowl, located on the main drag (River Road). It also featured 8 lanes and a coffee shop. The back of the building butted up against the Russian River. Almost every winter the entire building (and most of the town) would be flooded by the notorious Russian River and featured on television newscasts from coast to coast.

But in the summer, it became quite the meeting place for teens in the 1960’s and 1970’s, including our ragtag bunch of bowlers from Santa Rosa, Windsor and Sebastopol. On Friday we would meet up at L & L Lanes in Sebastopol and catch the Greyhound Bus for Guerneville. The round trip ticket was only 50 cents! Although we went to play all of the pinball games and hang out on the beach along the river, we usually wound up at River Bowl.

The center was managed by Elmo, who spent most of his time preparing for a lunch trade almost every day of the week. He was famous for his soups. While he was

busy in the kitchen, he would let us shadow bowl (without the pins) during the daytime hours. River Bowl had quite a history, even before Elmo’s famous soups. It reportedly opened in 1923, and played host to many dignitaries that came to rub elbows with the movie stars, or visit Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio.

Markarian’s River Club

Another interesting connection that we would make on those weekend excursions to the Russian River was with Teri Markarian and her younger brother Mark. They were the offspring of George and Pearl Markarian, who owned the popular Markarian’s River Club at the intersection of the Gravenstein Highway and River Road, next to the town’s only movie theater. It was a real family affair, with George’s three brothers sharing in the ownership of the club.

Pearl was one of the top woman keglers in the area. She bowled every Tuesday night in the Analy Bowlerettes league at L & L Lanes and entered her children in the Saturday youth bowling leagues. Teri’s friends Robin, Sue and Marlene would accompany her to L & L Lanes every Saturday to bowl in the junior leagues, and the girls became another reason for our frequent visits to Guerneville during the summer months.

Although we brought sleeping bags and thoroughly intended to sleep on the beach along the river, Pearl would have nothing to do with that, and insisted that we stay in the basement of their tri-level home. I can still remember her making each of us call home to let our parents know we would be staying at the Markarian’s for the weekend. We had many fun times at “The River,” and became very familiar with the movie theater next to Markarian’s River Club, as well as all the businesses on the main street that featured nothing but pinball machines, skee-ball and other amusement games.

Our motley crew went looking for some of those other bowling centers that were once located along the Russian River. The only other location besides River Bowl that we could find was the location in Monte Rio, although it had been closed and boarded up for many years.

What about you… Do any of you remember River Bowl, or any of the other locations that provided so much bowling enjoyment to so many people in the summertime?

2024 USBC Women's Championships Comes to Close in Reno

RENO, Nev. – The 2024 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships concluded its run at the National Bowling Stadium on June 30 after welcoming more than 14,500 bowlers to The Biggest Little City in the World.

The 104th edition of the event featured 3,668 four-player teams over 65 days, starting April 27.

The strikes added up over the course of the 2024 event, with a record number of 300s being rolled during the tournament – 11. The previous record was posted last year in Las Vegas with seven perfect games.

Exciting performances were put together across each of the tournament’s four average-based divisions (Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire) in team, doubles, singles and all-events competition. The USBC Women’s Championships adjusted its division and average structure for the 2024 event, highlighted by going from six divisions in doubles, singles and all-events to four.

All standings are unofficial and pending final verification.

A record score was posted in Diamond Team, as the members of Cal-Neva Girls of Tracy, California, rolled to a 2,846 total June 9 at the NBS. The group had games of 984, 898 and 964.

The team secured the record and lead by four pins, besting the 2,842 posted May 10 by Ballard vs. the Big C of Long Beach, New York.

Brittany Hillman, a 2012 Scratch Team champion, led the way with games of 276, 258 and 269 for an 803 series and was joined by Karen Reid (733 series), Andrea Castillo (701) and Brittany Tierney (609).

In the final frame, Castillo rolled three strikes in the anchor position to move the team to the top spot.

Hillman recorded one of the two 800s at the 2024 event, bringing the tournament’s all-time total to 15.

The second 800 helped push Sarah Klassen of Wichita, Kansas, to the lead in Diamond Singles on June 23.

Klassen, a 2021 Intercollegiate Team Championships winner at Wichita State University, had games of 245, 268 and 290 to finish with an 803 series.

The performance also marked the first 800 series for Klassen, who also claimed a bronze medal in singles competition for Canada during the 2021 International Bowling Federation World Championships.

On the day after Klassen’s run to the top spot, Sabrena Hershey of Gillette, Wyoming, finished her trek to the lead in Diamond All-Events by one pin, finishing with 2,199. Hershey, a former collegiate standout at Midland University, posted sets of 784 in team, 709 in doubles and 706 in singles at the National Bowling Stadium.

In Hershey’s final frame, she converted the 2-4-5 combination and recorded a nine count on her fill ball to pass the 2,198 posted by Kayla Pashina of Otsego, Minnesota, on April 30.

The longest tenure at the top of

the standings belonged to Erin Czuprynski of New Lenox, Illinois, and Amber Thompson of Danville, Indiana, in Diamond Doubles.

The pair took the lead on April 30 with a 1,474 total.

Czuprynski led the duo with games of 225, 257 and 288 for a 770 series, and Thompson added 268, 191 and 245 for a 704 set.

Two competitors are in position to claim multiple titles at the 2024 Women’s Championships after their run June 20-21 in Reno.

Melinda Walters of Sunrise, Florida, and Mary DeStasio of Coconut Creek, Florida, helped Diamond Dolls of Pompano Beach, Florida, to the top spot in Ruby Team with a 2,519 total.

The team rolled games of 882, 843 and 794, and Walters (596) and DeStasio (696) were joined in the effort by Pompano Beach’s Gloria DeMars (747) and Shaena Clement of Fort Lauderdale, Florida (480).

The following day, Walters and DeStasio were steady in their performance in doubles to take over the lead in the Ruby Division with 1,328. DeStasio had games of 225, 225 and 216 for a 666 series, and Walters contributed 244, 204 and 214 for 662.

DeStasio also finished in second place for Ruby All-Events with a 1,970 total.

Bianca Anderson of Stone Mountain, Georgia, used sets of 689 in

singles, 644 in team and 643 in doubles to finish in the lead for Ruby All-Events with 1,976. Her 689 in singles finished tied for second, as Susan Musgrave of Edmond, Oklahoma, posted the top total in Ruby Singles with 691 (248, 253, 190).

In the Emerald Division, three of the top scores were achieved during the final week of the 2024 tournament.

Lana Vigil of Dulce, New Mexico, took the lead in Emerald Singles on June 24 after rolling games of 192, 220 and 244 for a 656 series, and the members of Pick Up Artists of Powell, Ohio, powered their way to the top spot in Emerald Team on June 26 with 2,214.

The team improved with each game at the NBS, rolling scores of 694, 720 and 800. Kathryn Maliwesky led the way with a 610 series and was joined by Annette Ludwig (592), Maureen Malinowski (546) and Cheyenne Ludwig (466).

Cameryn Landers of Calumet Park, Illinois, and Chicago’s Marisol Garcia moved into the lead in Emerald Doubles on June 28, finishing with a score of 1,196. Landers had games of 248, 147 and 226 for a 621 series, and Garcia had 175, 200 and 200 for 575.

Genevieve Randal of Klamath Falls, Oregon, maintained the top spot in Emerald All-Events after posting sets of 617 in singles, 585 in doubles and 567 in team May 11-

SMART to Provide New Fall Bonus Scholarships

ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress Scholarship Management and Account Reporting for Tenpins (SMART) program announced a policy change to provide new bonus scholarships in the fall to active SMART recipients. Under the policy, when SMART deposited unassigned funds in provider accounts are not used by their expiration date, those funds will be distributed equally to active recipients in that state. SMART defines an active recipient as one who used funds in the preceding calendar year.

SMART Providers receive SMART deposited unassigned scholarship funds annually. If the provider chooses not to assign those funds to a recipient within two years, they expire. The first expiration of SMART deposited unassigned funds will take place July 31, 2024. Under this new policy,

12 to finish with 1,769.

The top score in Sapphire Team was shared by the members of Prairie Pals II of Bennett, Colorado, and Team Purpureus of Campbell, California, with 1,891.

Prairie Pals II featured Cheryl Campbell (438), Sophie Fernandez (476), Robin Russell (532) and Stephanie Wilson (445). The members of Team Purpureus included Paulette Petro (430), Jennifer Young (411), Kathy Nguyen (520) and Cheryl Rule (530).

Corina Edwards and Melodie Lowke of Robstown, Texas, finished with the lead in Sapphire Doubles at 1,064. Edwards had games of 161, 220 and 174 for 555, and Lowke added 157, 225 and 127 for 509. Kay Lynn Doney of Bozeman, Montana, rolled sets of 560 in singles, 543 in doubles and 496 in team to finish at the top of the standings in Sapphire All-Events with a 1,599 total.

Milwaukee’s Jennifer Kosoris was tied for second in Sapphire AllEvents with a 1,570 score, but she posted the top number in Sapphire Singles after recording games of 232, 202 and 170 for a 604 series.

There were several participation milestones at the 2024 Women’s Championships, as Rilla Yeater of Akron, Ohio, and Sandra Jones of Burleson, Texas, celebrated 50 years at the event. Jacquelyn Nelson of Siler City, North Carolina, became the sixth bowler to reach 60 years of participation at the tournament, while Onalee Kraus of Coldwater, Michigan, became just the second bowler to reach 62 years.

The 2024 event marked the tournament’s 13th visit to Reno and 10th appearance at the National Bowling Stadium.

The Women’s Championships will return to Las Vegas and the South Point Bowling Plaza for both the 2025 and 2026 editions of the tournament. Registration already is open for the 2025 tournament at BOWL.com/WomensChamp.

the expiring funds will be assigned to active recipients throughout the providers’ state.

The intent of this policy change is to quickly move expiring SMART deposited unassigned funds to recipients for use and keep the funds within the same geographic area. The amount of the new fall bonus scholarship will vary by state depending on the amount of expiring provider funds and number of active recipients within the state.

Earlier this year, USBC announced an investment earnings allocation of $7 million to provide

additional scholarships for youth bowlers in 2024. The $7 million allocation was consistent with funding provided in 2022 and 2023 and matched the largest investment earnings allocation in SMART history.

In addition to the earnings allocation, SMART also allocated an additional $1 million to the SMART Pell Grant Match program.

Active SMART recipients will see the new bonus scholarships posted in their accounts in September. For more information on SMART, visit BOWL.com/SMART.

GCU Continues To Achieve Its Bowling Goals

Editors Note: Ever since Ben Canfield arrived on the GCU campus 10 years ago. He has taken over a program that no one has ever heard of in 2015. Into one that has been getting noticed by the rest of the collegiate bowling community in recent years. He attributes this to putting in a lot of hard work along the way, and it didn't hurt to have a bit of good luck either.

Phoenix, AZ - Grand Canyon University (GCU), Head Bowling Coach Ben Canfield, has always had a simple but effective philosophy when it comes to securing opportunities in the game of bowling. And that philosophy is, it's about being at the right place at the right time.

It's hard to believe, but when GCU starts its Collegiate Club Bowling season later this fall. It will mark his 10th season as the leader of the Lopes' men's and women's bowling programs. And during his tenure he has turned the program into one that nobody really heard of. Into one that has been ranked nationally on a regular basis in recent years.

"I will be entering my 10th year as head coach at GCU this Fall. It has been way more than I expected from the start in 2015. We’ve accomplished so much, and I owe a lot to the student-athletes and Club Sports staff that have helped me along the way," he said, of his tenure at GCU thus far. "It was an adjustment. There were a lot of unknowns, but my experience as captain at ASU for two seasons helped me understand the ins and outs of planning a collegiate season. I would say I started to feel comfortable at the end of my second season. We won a couple of tournaments and had a solid showing at ITC Sectionals!"

His accomplishments as a bowler at ASU include four National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Academic All-American selections. A 2014-2015 Collegiate Club All-American second-team honoree nod and 2013-2014 Arizona Junior Bowlers Tour (JBT) Bowler of the Year. He also claimed 23 JBT titles and placed fourth in allevents at the USBC Open Championship in 2015. His teammates at ASU included: Jakob Butturff, Andrew Cain, and Michael Haugen Jr. They are all members of the PBA, and have won at least one regional and one national PBA title.

"My junior and senior years were pretty comparable from a statistical standpoint, but I was named a 2nd Team CTBCA All-American my senior year, so that sets it apart slightly. I had different relationships with each of those individuals. Haugen was an assistant coach for most of my time at ASU. He was tough on me and pushed us at practice while competing with

the team on a weekly basis," he said, of his own collegiate bowling career. "I always enjoy running into him nowadays. I bowled with Jakob for one year at ASU. We pushed each other that year as we bowled 100 games for average and only finished 14 pins apart at the end of the year. We also traveled and competed together as he got his footing on tour, which led to some great memories. Andrew Cain was a great mentor to me as I bowled at the regional level and dabbled at larger events, such as the World Series of Bowling. He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of life and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we got to spend together on and off the lanes. My collegiate bowling experience at Arizona State set the foundation for myself as a bowler and eventually as a coach. Jordan (Nassberg ASU's Head Coach), played a huge role in the progression of my knowledge of the sport at all levels."

So, when he arrived on the GCU campus to begin his coaching career. He wasn't sure how he would be looked at by his student athletes. Looked at as a father figure, or looked at as a big brother.

"That’s a great question. I think my role has changed as the years go on. The age gap between myself and the student-athletes is much more noticeable now. I’d say probably closer to a big brother figure currently," he said, of what it was like being the coach, when he first arrived on the GCU campus. "We have a great culture here within our team at GCU, and I lean on our student-leaders and my colleagues in the Club Sports Offices to handle the difficult situations that arise each year. It’s awesome!, when the kids call me coach. That’s why I do what I do and I am very grateful for the opportunity to impact their lives on and off the lanes."

When he arrived at GCU, they had a mixed Men’s/Women’s team. The first goal his director gave him, was to start a separate Women’s team. He didn't have to look too far to find the talent he needed to start the Women's program. Correen Acuff and Emily Ornelas where his first two recruits. Both still compete at a very high level in women's bowling in Arizona.

"Correen and Emily were instrumental in getting that team off the

ground and I am very thankful for their respective commitments to the team over the years!," he said, of his first two recruits. "That first 300 (in program history) was super cool. (It was bowled in the Rebel Classic at the Orleans in Las Vegas in 2017). Correen was and still is a friend of mine, so seeing her experience the joy of that at the collegiate levels was awesome to witness."

Acuff has also had success on the national level as well. At the 2023 USBC Queens, she finished fourth. In the stepladder finals, she defeated Dasha Kovalova 215190, in the opening match. Then lost to Carlene Beyer 202-170.

"Her performance at the 2023 Queens was even more impressive and we are proud of the connection she has to the Lopes Bowling program," the coach said, of her performance on the national stage. "The tournament was held in May of 2023 at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas, NV."

Grand Canyon College was chartered on August 1,1949, with 16 faculty and approximately 100 students in Prescott, Arizona. In 1951, the college relocated to a 90-acre tract in West Phoenix and was accredited in 1968 by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. Established as a Baptist-affiliated institution with an emphasis on religious studies, the school initially offered bachelor’s programs in education. Programs expanded to include the sciences, nursing, business, music and fine arts. It was during this time when the college started to develop a reputation for producing effective teachers, nurses and healthcare professionals in the Southwest.

"The Women’s team won their first tournament at the Rebel Invitational in January of 2017. It was the same event that Correen shot a 300 game at. That win gave the team a lot of vindication that all their hard work had paid off," he said, of his program earning credibility nationwide. "While the Men’s team won their first tournament at the Montclair Open in November of 2016. We took down two very successful programs, San Jose State and Arizona State, which made the win even sweeter. That win was a catalyst for our team as we strived to move up quickly through the col-

legiate ranks."

Since their initial tournament victories, the men's and women's programs have accomplished the following:

At the 11th Annual Devil's Duel (2022). GCUs' anchor bowler struck out in the 10th frame of the final game, to win the event by 1 pin. In 2023, the women's team took 3rd place at the Collegiate Club National Championships. The men's team in 2024, took 3rd place at the Collegiate Club National Championships. The men's team in 2024, also took 2nd place at the Fort Worth ITC Sectional Qualifier. It secured their second ITC Nationals appearance in program history. Because of the success GCU has had this past season, Coach Canfield. Was also named Collegiate Club Coach of The Year.

"It was incredibly humbling to be honored in that manner by my peers," he said, of being named Coach of The Year. "It’s hard to put into words what it means to receive an award, the NCBCA Coach of the Year. That is the one named after Gordon Vadakin with Gordon Vadakin’s (the best coach in collegiate bowling’s history)name on it. The Second Coach of the Year Award I won, was The Randy Widger CTBCA Coach of the Year."

The success GCU has had on the lanes the last couple of years, has also helped with its own recruiting process.

"Definitely. Our name is out there as a top program in collegiate bowling. We hope to continue to draw great talent and great students to GCU each year," the coach says, of recruiting talent due to recent program successes. "The entire program competed in six tournaments this year. That included two trips to Las Vegas and our home events at Glenfair Lanes. I thoroughly enjoying getting to watch our 30+ students compete at the same time."

GCUs' club dues range from $425-$1200 each year, depending on what team a student earns a spot in. GCU has received a ton of support from friends and family each year, which has led to very successful fundraising endeavors over the past few seasons. It has an endorsement deal with a bowling ball manufacturer, that helps out in product only.

Each collegiate coach has a goal of where they want their program to be within a certain time frame. Coach Canfield also has goals that he wants to achieve.

"I would like us to remain at the same level as we are now. We've consistently been the best team in the West Coast and can contend with the top teams in the nation" he said, of where he wants his team to be in five years. "My goal is for us to compete for a national championship each year and I think we have the bowlers and structure to do so."

PWBA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year Races Come Down to Final Stop in August

ARLINGTON, Texas – After six different locations and eight events, the 2024 Professional Women’s Bowling Association National Tour season has been full of highlights and intrigue as the PWBA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year races heat up with PWBA Tour Championship Week in Detroit, the culminating event on the schedule in August.

The season started off in May at Cedervale Lanes in Eagan, Minnesota, where veteran Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, took home the PWBA GoBowling! Twin Cities Open title over England’s Verity Crawley, who climbed the stepladder as the No. 5 seed to reach the title match.

Pluhowsky also won the PWBA Music City Classic as a part of the PWBA Classic Series – Nashville, earning multiple titles in a season for the first time in her PWBA Tour career. She leads the tour in top12 appearances with six and is tied with Crawley for most stepladder appearances with four.

The United States Bowling Congress Queens in Green Bay, Wisconsin, saw Pluhowsky take the top seed heading into match play, but she was dispatched by 2023 Rookie of the Year Hope Gramly of Aubrey, Texas, who became the No. 1 seed for the TV finals and earned her second Queens finals telecast in three years.

Defending champion Lindsay Boomershine of Brigham City, Utah, made the stepladder and attempted to become the first person to repeat as Queens champion since 1982, while Canada’s Felicia Wong made her first career telecast.

Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, also made the TV show, looking to claim her third tiara overall and first since 2010 to punctuate what has looked to be a resurgent season for the five-time major titlist.

But it was Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio, who was the last bowler standing, winning her first major and becoming the youngest Queens winner ever at 19 years old, breaking the previous record that Wendy MacPherson set in 1988 at the age of 20.

It was Martin’s second win at a PWBA event, after claiming victory at the 2021 BowlTV Classic to become the youngest athlete to win a national tour event. Martin took the longest road possible to victory at the Queens as she lost her first-round match only to rattle off seven-straight wins in the Elimination Bracket before becoming the No. 3 seed on the TV show.

After Martin took home the tiara, the PWBA Classic Series –Nashville rolled around, and it saw Singapore’s Cherie Tan put her stamp on the season, finishing no worse than third in all three Classic Series events, winning the 2024 BowlTV Classic and authoring the

second-highest 12-game qualifying total since the PWBA Tour’s 2015 relaunch of the tour (2,964).

The following week in Clarksville, Indiana, Lauren Russo of Ballwin, Missouri, averaged over 239 for 24 games en route to her first career PWBA title at the Southern Indiana Open.

The title match between Russo and 2023 PWBA Player of the Year Jordan Richard of Tipton, Michigan, was the second-highest combined scoring title match since the relaunch of the tour at 526 (267-259).

High scores were prevalent throughout the Southern Indiana Open as five 300 games were thrown in competition, including two by Erin McCarthy of Elkhorn, Nebraska. The five perfect games tied for third most at any one PWBA event and pushed the overall number of 300s thrown so far during the 2024 PWBA Tour season to 10.

Malaysia’s Sin Li Jane is not on the list of bowlers who have achieved perfection so far this season, but that’s about the only list her name isn’t at or near the top of.

Sin returned to the PWBA Tour this season after a four-year hiatus, and, so far, she has made her presence known in a big way. She won her first event back at the PWBA Bowlers Journal Rockford Open in a wire-to-wire victory.

She continued with a strong effort the following week at the USBC Queens, finishing sixth, one spot out of the stepladder finals.

In Nashville, Sin won the first event of the Classic Series, the Greater Nashville Classic, placed in the top 12 at the BowlTV Classic and was in the top 24 at the Music City Classic. Then, the following week, she placed 14th at the Southern Indiana Open.

At the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open in Indianapolis, Sin lurked in the shadows, staying within the cut to advance to match play before coming alive to win 16 of her 24 matches to clinch the No. 1 seed on the TV show. Once there, she went on to defeat Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova for her first career major and third PWBA title of the season.

Needless to say, the soft-spoken Sin came roaring back to the PWBA Tour with her performance on the lanes. In her three stepladder appearances, Sin has been

the No. 1 seed twice and the No. 3 seed once while going a perfect 5-0 in matches and averaging over 228.

Sin Li Jane has already carved out a piece of history for herself this season, but can she make even more heading into the final PWBA Tour stop in Detroit as she looks to become the first international Player of the Year in PWBA history?

She leads the tour in wins (3), earnings ($103,325) and points (79,850), while tied for first in match play appearances (5). Sin is also tied for second in top-12 appearances (5), tied for third in stepladder appearances (3), tied for fifth in cashes (7) and is eighth on tour in average with 215.81 in 208 games bowled this season.

Sin still must contend with Pluhowsky, who is only a few thousand points behind, a gap that can easily be closed with one good event. Crawley is also someone to watch. She’s about 26,000 points behind, a larger gap to close, but one good week can close it quickly.

Additionally, there are also players like Dasha Kovalova of Ukraine, Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona, Richard and more who could make a jump up if they have a great week in Detroit.

Over in the Rookie of the Year

race, Crystal Elliott of Palm Bay, Florida, is leading the pack in a strong class of new PWBA bowlers. Elliott has cashed in all eight events so far, making three matchplay appearances and earning a stepladder finals berth at the Twin Cities Open where she finished fifth. Elliott also has the 11th-highest average on tour this season with 213.58 in 192 games bowled, continuing her excellent 2024 as she won the United States Amateur Bowling Championships to earn a spot on Team USA and the NCAA Bowling Championships with Jacksonville State.

Other notable rookies having strong starts to their PWBA careers are Bailey Delrose of Crest Hill, Illinois, Laura Beuthner of Germany, Rebecca Hagerman of Loves Park, Illinois, and Cassidy Courey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, all of whom have cashed at least three times and made match play at least once.

Elliott has a comfortable lead in the ROY race with a 20,000-point cushion over Delrose, but as this season has already shown, anyone from anywhere can pop off at any time.

The PWBA Tour continues July 25-28 with the PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles in Houston, before the PBA/PWBA/PBA50 Jonesboro Trios event in Jonesboro, Arkansas, July 31-Aug. 3. These events will not count toward points but will count as a title toward their respective tours for the winners.

For more information on the SABC Mixed Doubles, visit https:// strikingagainstbreastcancer.org/ sabc-mixed-doubles-tournament.

For the Jonesboro Trios, visit https://pwba.com/national-tour/ pba-pba50-pwba-jonesboro-trios.

Duster led the way with games of 278, 243 and 258 for a 779 series, and Acuff added 239, 246 and 203 for 688.

"We had a great run in Regular Doubles today at the South Point Bowling Plaza!" Kyle Duster of La Mirada, California, and Derek Acuff of Surprise, Arizona, took over fifth place at THE USBC Open Championships, doubles event, on July 7, 2024 with a 1,467 total. Great bowling!
