Inaugural TATurday at Bowlero Via Linda
by: John Verbil
Congratulations to Tim Eichhorn of Phoenix, who won the inaugural TATurday at Bowlero Via Linda September 14th for $2,955 today from the Scratch division by not only winning the title match for $2,500, but also throwing three strikes afterward to break the na-
scent Progressive Pot and take home an additional $455!
Great bowling as well to Caden Ament of Houston out of the 215 & Under Handicap Division, taking 2nd place and $1,000; Melody Rane of Phoenix out of the 189 & Under Handicap Division, claiming 3rd place and $750; and Joe

For those of you that remember, 2021 was the year that I dubbed Francois Lavoie the Face-Masked Crusader of Bowling. I compared Lavoie to Bruce Wayne, the alter ego of Batman, who was the more resigned, shy character portrayed in Bob Kane’s famous comic strips.
“The quiet, unassuming professional bowler from Quebec City, QC, weighs in at a mere 128 pounds distributed on a chiseled 5’6” frame,” I wrote in the column that appeared in March of that year. “But what Lavoie lacks in stature, he more than makes up for with his intense concentration.”
Steve Mackie, proprietor of Ten Pins & More, host for the 20th New Mexico Open, has the same sort of portrayal for Lavoie’s character: “He’s as cool as ice when addressing the pins. He credits his early coaching at the University of Wichita for developing a strong mental game, evidenced by his two US Open wins alongside a Tournament of Champions title.”

August 31-September 2 the 2024 AHT SFT Labor Day Major was held at Bowlero Mesa. There were 279 total entries (207 qualifying and 72 parlays) paying out over $20K in main and side event prizefunds!
Kaylene Almy ran the step ladder to take home her first AHT SFT Major title and $1,700.00! Congrats to Michael Rhoads on 2nd place for $925.00. Also, congrats to Charles Price for third place and $625.00!
Francois Lavoie
(continued from page 1)
Once again over this past weekend, Francois put all of those attributes to good use in winning his second consecutive title at the New Mexico Open. The victory was good for a record $13,500 first place prize. He joined John Young of Albuquerque as the only two time winners of this event. Young also won his titles in consecutive years, in 2004 and 2005.
Lavoie had to win three matches in the championship round, live-streamed by the incomparable Emil Williams Jr. (Why doesn’t the PBA hire this guy for their televised programs?). As Mackie reports, “Lavoie first beat Kevin Jenkins (Anthem, AZ), 201 to 182. Next up was top seed PBA star Jakob Butturff (Chandler, AZ), who lost to Lavoie by a 220 to 190 score, making the two even at one loss apiece.”
With confidence riding high, the “Caped Crusader” never missed the pocket in the deciding game and defeated Butturff with a 238 to 199 victory, and the first place prize of $13,500. This was actually Lavoie’s third win a row, following victories in PBA events in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Denver, Colorado, the previous two weeks.
Can you say, HOT, HOT, HOT!?
Current USBC Masters champion, DeeRonn Booker of Albuquerque, finished fourth after losing to Jenkins in the first game of the stepladder finals, 192 to 178. A list of all the finalists can be found on the Tenpins & More At Rio Rancho Facebook page.
In 2021, I used to wonder if Frenchy (an affectionate name given to Lavoie on the PBA Tour) would ever win without the face mask made necessary by the COVID-19 confusion. But within a couple of months he won once again in the Super Slam… without a mask! In that event, Lavoie de-
feated Kyle Troup in the championship match, 247 to 202.
What’s bizarre is that the announcers didn’t even mention the fact that all of the finalists were competing without masks. I guess everyone was so happy that things were getting back to normal, they didn’t want to jinx the moment by mentioning the lack of masks.
Through it all, Lavoie's approach to competition has remained the same. In an article posted on the PBA website by Jef Goodger back in 2021, Lavoie stated, “Coming here, I was thinking this (the Super Slam) was going to be a fun event and we’re all going to have a good time. Once we started bowling, all of a sudden I’m in competition mode and I really want to win.”
Can you say, COOL AS ICE?!
What a tremendous tournament, reminiscent of the great televised events of the past, with famous announcers like Chris Schenkel and Nelson Burton Jr., Jack Buck and Whitey Harris, Denny Schreiner and Mike Durbin, and let’s not forget Fred Wolf and Bill Bunetta. Filling in with color commentary for Emil Williams Jr. was Mike Miller, former PBA touring professional and brother to Dana Miller-Mackie, Steve’s wife. The televised show was exceptional, with incredible commentary that focused on the players, and not useless gibberish. A very professional event — congrats to everyone involved.

JBT Results; Desert Open; Glenfair Lanes; August 11, 2024
Cesar Padilla finally caught a cactus, while Cameron Carlo won in his first attempt, earning titles at the 2024 JBT Desert Open, the opening event of the 29th season of JBT competition.
Padilla was the dominant force in the scratch division, leading the twelve game, three pattern event for the third straight year, this time including the event's only 300 game. He selected Badger, the lowest scoring of the three pat terns, for the matchplay rounds. He rolled through those as well, getting by Keith Ylvisaker, Mike Jones in a 3-game thriller 202-201 in the decider, and Josh Abigania in the semifinal. Gavin Fernandez, a 2020 Desert Open champ, came out of the other half of the brack et, with wins over Gage Baker, Rene Canez, and JR Barczyszyn to reach the final. The finale was all Padilla, as he got off to a fast start and didn't look back. The twotime defending Bowler of the Year cruised to his 14th career JBT title, and long awaited first glass cactus trophy.
Jon Abigania went huge on the third pattern to grab the #1 seed, but newcomer Jeffrey Crowel stopped him in round two of match play. Crowley then lost to Zach Holzwarth, advancing to his first career title game. Carlo crawled from the 10 seed in the other half, getting by William Chondro, Xavi er Provencher, and rake Wilkins to reach the finale. In that game, he was able to outlast Holzwarth, picking up his first career JBT title with the victory.
Mini-cacti went to the subdivi sion champs. Katelyn Abigania fired 278 to beat Tayler Clark in Girls Scratch and Gage Baker stopped Jason Gootzeit in U17. Huge thanks to Jason and the Glenfair staff for all their support over the decades. Over $5,700 was awarded to all ages and skill levels? Want in on the fnn? Accomplishments:
Cortez Schenck has built an impressive career in the bowling world, with a list of accomplishments that many only dream of achieving. Some of his most notable victories include winning the 2018 US Amateur title and capturing a gold medal in the Master’s division at the 2018 World Youth Championships. His success started early, as he claimed the 2013 U15 Junior Gold Champion title and has continued to reach new heights. More recently, he became the 2022 New Mexico Open Champion and achieved the prestigious honor of being named 2023 PBA Rookie of the Year and 2023 PBA West Region Player of the Year. As a former Team USA member, Cortez has consistently proven his talent and commitment to the sport.
Agent Ong Open Memories: Reflecting on his experience at last year’s Agent Ong Open, one of Cortez’s fondest memories was sharing pizza with fellow competitor Kyle King after the Ong sweeper. The two discussed game strategies and areas for improvement, forming a lasting friendship in the process. Cortez also recalls Matt Herbert as a competitor he connected with during the event.
Why the Agent Ong Open? Cortez was drawn to the Agent Ong Open not just for its generous prize fund but also for the challenging competition, which he sees as a perfect opportunity to sharpen his skills. “Tough competition makes for great practice and provides learning experiences,” he says, noting that the tournament’s local proximity to the west coast makes it all the more appealing.
Keep an eye on Cortez Schenck as he continues to rise in the bowling world, with his eyes set on the next big win! Register Today: www.agentongopen.com

The Coffee Table Book
by Dave Williams
The year was 1994. Business was good at Nationwide Bowling Centers, a chain of bowling centers based out of Jersey City, N.J., directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan in New York City.
In fact, business was so good that I was afforded the luxury of having four college interns to assist not only with our graphic design and printing, but also with our website, mailing lists and outside sales.
Whenever we had a chance to chit-chat about trivial items of the day, I can recall the interns being amazed that I had never seen an episode of Seinfeld or Friends, two of the more popular sitcoms in the 90’s.
You see, while the interns went home after their afternoon gig at Nationwide Bowling, my day was only half done, as almost every evening was spent at one of the Nationwide properties, usually entertaining a new group for a company party and possible conversion to a bowling league.
One of the most famous episodes of Seinfeld that I missed during those years was “The Opposite,” that debuted in 1994. In the episode, Kramer decides to have a coffee table book published, about nothing but coffee tables!
Elaine’s company, Pendant Publishing, agrees to publish Kramer’s book, and as part of his book tour, Kramer appears on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. After kissing Kathie Lee on the lips, he takes a gulp of his coffee and spits it all over Kathie Lee, apparently because it’s too hot.
Kramer’s faux pas with Kathie Lee causes his book tour to be cancelled by Pendant Publishing. This is also the episode where George gets an interview at the New York
Yankees headquarters and criticizes George Steinbrenner about his style of management, thus landing him the job of Assistant to the Traveling Secretary.
As you can see, I’ve made up for all the times that I missed those sitcoms in the 90’s by virtually memorizing every episode through the reruns that now appear daily on Comedy Central, TV Land and Nick at Nite.
But, what does any of this have to do with bowling, you might ask?
Well it seems that a couple of enterprising individuals, author Chris Nichols, with Adriene Biondo, have come up with the ultimate coffee table book, about nothing but bowling centers. It’s called “Bowlarama - The Architecture of Mid-Century Bowling.”
Thanks to Elliot Kane, Marketing Associate for Angel City Press at the Los Angeles Public Library, I’ve been asked to write a review of the book that includes more than 200 pages (and at least that many photos) of bowling centers from the boom years of construction. There are so many memories in those pages!
Following a cornucopia of illustrations and photos in the first 30 pages of the book, the remainder of the pages are divided into eight subsections including: the introduction, a history of bowling, technology, architecture, interiors, entertainment, community, and the final chapter, fall and rise.
There’s a fascinating “Guide to Remaining Mid-Century Bowling Centers” on page 199 that actually lists many of the googie style locations that are still in operation. No doubt I will be returning to this page for additional articles, as Mr. Kane has provided me with many approved for publication photos… four of which are included as part of this column.
The book will be available on September 10th, at a cost of $40. At a time in my life when I’m trying to find ways to unload all of the materials I’ve collected in 70-plus years of hoarding (in a good way), there’s no question that I will be
purchasing this book to relive all of those memories that were forged during a lifetime of dedication to bowling.
