BTC at Cerbat Lanes in Kingman
April 29: Wanda Parsons was victorious at the BTC tournament at Cerbat Lanes, winning $1,750. Second place finisher, Jerome Davis gave it his all as he smashed the pocket in the 10th only to leave a demoralizing 7-10 split. Wanda prevailed as she was consistent all day long. Wanda won the women's and the seniors division and elected to proceed as a senior. That opened the door for the wonderful, Krysta Deleon to claim the women's division and 3rd place overall.
Stu
Two-hander, Frank Deleon took 4th place.
BTC extends a huge THANK YOU to Krysta, her family and staff for being gracious hosts. All went went well as usual at Cerbat Lanes. Like always, the food was delicious as well. We look forward to a return trip.
Thank you to all the Kingman area bowlers who participated and special recognition to those who made the trip from Vegas. We appreciate you all!!
Williams (continued from page 1)
Pflugerville, Texas, continued the momentum into singles, starting with 288 before connecting for the 13th perfect game of the 2024 USBC Open Championships in Game 2.
The 42-year-old right-hander remained in contention for the lead in Regular Singles and Regular All-Events as he prepared for his final frame, but a 6 pin on his first delivery in the 10th put the top spot in each event out of reach.
Williams converted the single pin and rolled a strike on his fill ball to finish with 217 for an 805 series, and he had 659 during his team competition Thursday to post an all-events tally of 2,245. The 805 and 2,245 moves Williams into second place in each event.
Joe Barket of Morro Bay, California, leads Regular Singles with 806, and 2019 Team All-Events champion Derek Magno of Cicero, New York, holds the top spot in Regular All-Events with 2,255.
The performance also helped Fran’s Pro Shop/Maple Lanes of Waterloo, Iowa, into the top 10 of Team All-Events with a 9,712 total. The team sits in ninth place, with Maximum Potential Pro Shop of Rome, New York, leading with 10,032.
Williams was joined on the lanes this year at South Point by Bartlett (1,984), Jason Peterson (1,887), Troy Fuller (1,865) and 2018 Regular Doubles champion Richard Eighme (1,731).
Across his six games on May 10th, Williams compiled a total pinfall of 1,586 for a 264.3 average in minors.
The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is
scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.

champs and finalists
Rene Canez and Seth Le picked up double points titles by capturing victories in the Best In The West tournament, in terrific Arizona Conference action at historic Cactus Bowl.
After fifteen all-matchplay games, the top six survivors advanced to a bracket style finals. In the scratch division, #5 Brendan Bobersky stopped AZ points leader #4 Cesar Padilla with a 2-0 sweep. In the other match, #3 Cayden Matherly bowled well, but could only stand back and watch as #6 Braxton Sexton blasted 300265 to advance, with the exciting perfecto being the first of his JBT career. The top two seeds then came in. #2 Rene Canez defended his turf by stopping Bobersky, while top seed Dominic Montoya remained solid as he had been all weekend, but fell in a 2-1 dogfight to Sexton, riding the home-crowd wave to the title match. The momentum ran out for him there, though, as Canez looked as sharp as he ever has, destroying the pins in a 2-0 title match sweep, earning the second title of his JBT career and $800 top prize.
The handicap finals also began with two seeps, as Peyton Lee defeated points leader Isaiah Pino, while Christian Ortega beat another Cactus bowler, Kim Davis. The win included an oh-so-close 299 game, the second time in two months he's flirted with JBT perfection. In the semifinal matches, #2 Seth Le was one 'e' short of Peyton Lee, but had no shortage of strikes, sweeping the match. In the other semi, Miguel Espinoza used a perfect 15-0 matchplay record to grab the #1 seed, but found himself in a dogfight against Ortega, escaping 2-1 to set up the title match. Both Seth and Miguel con-
tinued the excellent bowling, but a tenth frame double won game one for Seth, and re rode that momentum to a sweep, and the third title of his JBT career. A large brackets haul pushed him over $1,000 in earnings on the weekend, and his hot streak has boosted him all the way up to #7 on the all-conference points list!
A consolation event was held for bowlers missing Saturday's 10-game cut. Nathan Harnit and Shaiden Raymond bowled great to win their divisions, but the individual highlight was Mason Snow, who connected for the first 300 of his career, yay! The Brands of Brunswick, our title sponsor, offered three balls, claimed by Cameron Coleman, Canez, and Nathan Bravo. Harnit, his brother Nicholas, and Jadeyn Mabry all hit the '28' jackpot for a quick $100 bonus each. Subdivision finals, also with boosted prize funds, were won by Aiden Ruiz-Jimenez with a U17 win over Sexton, and Kendall Bollea, who finished 10th in the main tournament then beat Mabry for the Girls Scratch win.
Big contributions from the Arizona Army National Guard, and Tucson Metro USBC, helped greatly in $7,476 being awarded to bowlers of all skill levels and ages! Huge thanks to Cactus Bowl for a great hosting job, as well as the tireless Matt Hunt, who went above and beyond to have the center ready, and whose friendliest Mafia in the land put on a great show for everyone.
The field is now set for the 28th annual Arizona Invitational, with 71 qualifiers shooting for $1,000 top prizes, and berths in the prestigious Touring PLayers Championships, All-Star Teams, and Bowler of the Year all on the line!

We are thrilled to announce our expansion into Tucson, Arizona, and look forward to impacting the local bowling community. With over 10 years of experience in the valley and eight locations throughout Arizona, our efforts have helped grow bowling in many centers. We've also set trends that encourage other pro shops and bowling centers to elevate their product offerings. We're excited to bring this same commitment to Tucson and

The Tucson bowling community is incredible, yet often overlooked and under appreciated. Much like the sport itself, it has proven to be durable, reliable, and resilient over the years. It's filled with individuals who share a passion for bowling and connecting with others through the game. We believe there's no better place to continue our journey to grow the sport of bowling and redefine what customer experience should look like.

NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes
If you knew our schedule for the NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes, you would know that we relocated for our April tournament! “Stuff" happens, and when it does our Prez Linda Tilley goes into overdrive! We needed a new location on short notice, and Linda came through by arranging for us to bowl at Antelope Lanes in Prescott Valley on Saturday, April 20th, 2024! Whew, that was quick! And we couldn’t have been happier! Antelope Lanes was totally ready for us! Lanes were ready, and the folks that work there thought of everything! What a pleasure to bowl there!
Check-in began at 10:00, although there were a number of ladies there by 9:30! It’s socializing time! Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole was busy getting the ladies checked in and taking in entries for our next tournament. Directors Ann & Kay Monagle were moving fast getting raffle tickets sold! Prez Linda Tilley was welcoming new member Belinda Hutchings and taking shirt orders. Sgt. At Arms Pam Frendian & Director Rita Holly were zooming around taking great smiling pics of all of the ladies. What a wonderfully hectic time!
We would like to wish the following NAZB members a very happy April Birthday: Carol Belanger (4/2), Pam Frendian (4/7), Belinda Hutchings (4/7), Willie-Smith Kennedy (4/26), and Karen Blomgren (4/27). Ladies, we do hope your special day was/is spectacular!
We were bowling No-tap, which the ladies really enjoy. You could hear the cheers from one end of the center to the other! Here comes the first round of winners! In Division #1 (ladies with averages up to and including 145), Mysti Huston (795) took top honors! Congratulations Mysti! She was followed by Belinda Hutchings (750), Kristie LaShier (737), Claire Mulliner (715), Laura Byers (686), Linda Siegert (678), Rachel Culp (672), Ann Monagle (669), Brenda Schafer (663), Shirley Wiseman (661), Carol Belanger (659), Jan Bonifay (650), Carol Hollis (647), Linda Ruschat (640), Pam Cira-

Wow, that’s a bunch of winners! Twenty-four ladies out of forty-five placed in Division #1! Way to be ladies!
Next we’ll announce the Division #2 (ladies with averages of 146 and above) winners! The top bowler in Division #2 was Chris Healy (888)! Way to go Chris! She was followed by Peggy Albright (790), Dawn Howle (786), Karla Gibbons (760), Pam Frendian (755), Karen Freyslaben (695), and Melanie Estrella (675). Seven ladies out of fifteen placed in Division #2! Nice bowling ladies!
Two of our ladies had a 300 No-tap game which earned them a bowling pin (the kind you wear) from Prez Linda Tilley! Congratulations to Chris Healy and Dawn Howle! Way to crush those pins!
And here come more winners! Peggy Albright was smiling big time as she won the free entry to Camp Verde next month! The following ladies checked their tickets, hooted and hollered, and came zooming up to collect their prizes: Norma Cox, Donna Noel, Claire Mulliner, Chris Healy, Valerie Ames, Marsha Wimmer, and Kristie LaShier. Enjoy those prizes ladies!
Next month will find us on the road. We will venture to Camp Verde on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, to bowl 3 regular games. We will bowl at Shake, Rattle, & Bowl located in Cliff Castle Casino. We always bowl on the third Saturday of the month, and our tournaments always begin at 11:00A.M.
We are an awesome group of ladies of all ages coming from all over State 48! Ladies do NOT have to be sanctioned to join this grand group. They also DON’T have to be currently bowling in a league! If this interests you, please contact Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole (928227-1258). New members are always joyfully welcomed! Come along and join the fun!

Sun City Bowling Association (SCBA) held a 9-pin no tap tournament on Saturday, May 11th with over 80 entries. Winners will be announced in next month’s publication.
The 2023-2024 season for the SCBA Scratch Trio league is coming to an end after a very successful start of its inaugural season. SCBA sponsors this league, and it was formed with the goal to create a scratch league for bowlers averaging 220 or less interested in a competitive, match point style play. The original goal for the league was exceeded and all team spots were taken to fill the center. The format is four games, match point with line up low to high average and is held Sunday nights at Lakeview Lanes. Special thanks to Mike Dirmyer and the RCSC team at Lakeview Lanes for their assistance and support in putting this league together! If interested in joining the 2024-2025 season, or if you would like additional information, please reach out to Lakeview Lanes, or call Lynda Bettini at 480-225-3332.
Lakeview Lanes has a new senior scratch trio league for this summer, “Thursday Scratch Trios” starting May 23rd. This
is a three-game scratch league with max team average of 545. Lakeview Lanes is currently taking entries so reach out if interested.

Sun City Bowling Association
Sun City Bowling Association (SCBA) was formed in May 1986, to promote continued interest in the sport of bowling and to encourage fellowship among bowling participants.
SCBA administers and oversees numerous noteworthy bowling activities and tournaments for Sun City bowlers. The SCBC provides special recognition for outstanding scores bowled in regularly scheduled league fames. Furthermore, the association participates in the instruction of bowling fundamentals and sponsors a hidden number contest with its membership.
SCBA Membership
SCBA membership is open to all Sun City AZ residents and guest bowlers who bowl at either Bell or Lakeview Lanes, with an annual fee of $2.00 for the fiscal year running August 1 through July 31. Applications are on the bulletin boards of both bowling centers, and may be submitted to either the front desks at the lanes or directly to any association board member anytime throughout the year. A membership drive is also held each fall in which all bowling leagues are approached requesting that bowlers join the Sun City Bowling Association. There is an annual membership meeting with a speaker, refreshments and door prizes held each October.

June King of the Hill
by: Svet Vukomanovich
I am putting this out early so people can plan ahead. There will be the JJ Holman Memorial Doubles King of the Hill on 15 June 2024 at 10:00am. Entry is $130.00 per team ($65.00 per person). An optional $30.00 for High Games and an optional $20.00 for Singles. Single scores are from your individual double games.
The singles will be paid out after the first six games of qualification. Each bowler will bowl 6 games qualifying with the top 50% of the teams going forward and bowling 3 more games. Top 5 will make the Step Ladder Finals. The finals will be bowl in Scotch Doubles format. Hope to see many of you there.
The specs for the pattern is 47 ft, 28 Mil, and 2.62-1 ration. Pass the word to all. See you then.
While his daughter was busy winning the Metro Phoenix Queens David Hurley did a little bowling of his own at the Sun City Open. He fired 300 and three impressive sets of 740-752-774. He used the Storm Absolute and Absolute Power to get the job done. Ryan Riley of our Peoria location drilled both. Great bowling David!

Congrats! On A Job Well Done!
Editors Note: As the Senior Director of Association And Membership Operations, at the USBC. Mike Larsen has a lot on his plate to take care of these days in the world of bowling. Among those responsibilities include helping get the facilities ready to host the annual USBC convention at Southpoint in Las Vegas. If you were one of the 701 delegates that attended the 19th Annual Convention this year. What you saw when you got there, was the finished product of getting things ready for this years attendees. We at thetenpinexpress.com. were wondering all week, what it took to get everything ready for this years festivities. We were fortunate enough to sit down with Mike on Thursday April 25, to find out. Below is our conversation with him.
By Michael 'Chip' Begg Managing Editor, thetenpinexpress.com Director Mesa Metro Association
Q: How long have you been with USBC, and how long have you been handling Opps.
A: I’ve been with USBC for 15 years, started in 2008, and helping drive the convention since 2015.
Q: When do you start to prepare for the move to the annual convention. How many people are involved, and what is it like to coordinate all of the logistics.
A: There’s a lot of moving parts, as you may imagine, from staff coordination, to education planning and organizing, to working with the hotel staff to ensure all rooms and meals are ready, to communicating with attendees about all activities and registration. Planning is sort of year-round, but it gets really in gear in November of the prior year.
Q:How far out does Southpoint give you access to the meeting rooms. From start to finish, how long does it take to set up.
A: We get things built over the weekend before, so the event opens Monday with Registration and we begin setup on Saturday.
Q:How much equipment comes from Dallas. What are the logistics like in getting this done.
A We send a dedicated box truck with everything the week before. We couldn’t do it without the team here ordering, organizing, packing and getting the delivery scheduled.
Q: How many conference rooms do you rent. Do you always have enough of the things you need for the week. How much of the things you need for the week, stay here in storage until the following year.
A: We contract with the hotel a few years out for the spaces needed, South Point, The Orleans, Grand Sierra in Reno have all been great to work with over the years and ensuring the spaces we need are secured. Nothing really stays there in storage for the following year, we do ship things back that
are needed for other events we organize throughout the year. As an example, we ship a cage with IT stuff, computers, printers, network stuff, etc and those come back here because in just two months some of it will go to Junior Gold to operate that event.
Q: When did you decide to have the convention at the same time and site as the open. How has that worked out for the tournament bowlers and delegates.
A: It’s the USBC Board of Director’s Convention really, as it’s their Annual Meeting and they choose the site. I recall back in 2013 time period when the tournaments were both in Reno that the delegates asked to have Convention there also. Since then it’s been with one of the tournaments (Open or Womens) every year but one.
Q: How many staff members come from DFW, to work the convention. What is it like having everyone come out to Southpoint, and work the convention for a week.
A: It’s about 30 staff members in total, some are only there for a few days, while others are for nearly the week. It’s great being able to have some of our staff who doesn’t get to work with associations as much in the field be able to meet and learn about them, it’s a great experience.
Q: Are there currently any plans to take the convention to another site, like Reno or Syracuse. How many times has it been in Reno and Syracuse. The convention and or Open.
A: We will look at upcoming cities very soon for 2026, 2027 and 2028. With the recent announcements of the WC in Charlotte in 2027 and Greenville, SC in 2028 for the Open, we’ll see what we can do about getting a location there for the board to consider.
originally and are big Rangers fans, it was great to see them win the World Series. I’m a Mets fan, my family is from New York, but the Rangers are for sure my #2 team now as Globe Life Field is about ½ mile from IBC. No World Series games for me last year, tickets were a bit crazy, though I did finally get to take my wife and two girls to a game last season, we saw them play the last home game of the regular season so I like to think we brought them some good juju for the playoffs.
Q: What is it like working in bowling. Is it what you thought it would be like to work in bowling.
There will need to be convention and hotel space to host us in addition to the tournament.
Q: How far in advance, do you book facilitators. Are they scouted by staff beforehand, or recommended?
A: It’s about the same time frame as getting ready, we keep a list of educators that are suggested to us from other events or conferences. We start in the fall, our staff starts organizing our own sessions and we begin interviewing guest educators to see what messages fit for the time we are in and with the experience we are trying to provide. We’re always open to hearing about educators for us to explore.
Q: How much personal satisfaction do you get, when the job is done. And when you get a compliment.
A: It’s what makes it all worth it. Bowling’s volunteers are the local and state level really do drive so much of the service and participation in our sport, so to be able to put on a quality event for them is an honor to do. I’ve made so many great friends and connections over the years from the event and with my other work travels.
Q: Do you get a chance to bowl nationals while you are here.
A: USBC staff can bowl the national tournaments as a team building activity, and I do get to do that as I’ve bowled in many times in the past, I think I’m approaching 20 times soon. It’s fun to share the Open with newer employees who may not bowl so they get an understanding of how much the event means to the sport.
Q:Are any of you Rangers fans. How far is HQ from T-Mobile, and did you get to see them play in the world series.
A: Ha. We for sure have a few co-workers who are from the area
A: Sort of a fun question, there are definitely many things that I am a part of and service that I never would have imagined I’d be doing. Working for the National Governing Body can be very tough, but extremely rewarding. We often take a lot of the heat for things, even if it’s something we have limited or no control over. It just comes with the territory, and that’s not something I understood when I first started working here, I was just happy to be working in the sport. But now, I do have a strong understanding of the responsibility that comes with it, even though it can still be tough.
Q: Have you accomplished what you wanted to, by working in bowling.
A: I’ve gotten to be a part of more than I ever imagined over the years.
Q: If not, what would you like to accomplish during your career, and on the lanes.
A: On the lanes, shoot, just be able to keep bowling somewhat competitively every once in a while. With my work schedule and family, it’s not about me anymore on the lanes though.
Q: Can you provide a small background what you have done in the game.
A: I started bowling at the age of 4 in Merritt Island, Florida at Shore Lanes. I was pretty good pretty quick and really excelled and started to bowl in tournaments at around 10,11,12 and then into bigger events around Florida as a teenager and competing in Junior Gold (never very good though). I went to UCF to earn a degree in business and compete on the bowling team. We were really good my time there, just a great mix of guys who are lifelong friends now, and we were #1 in the country for a bit of time but never won the coveted Helmer Cup. I realized in school that I likely wasn’t going to be a pro bowler, considering I was 4-5th best on my own team. My only real success as an adult is a had a lucky game at the OC in 2012 and bowled a 300 during doubles.

Rolling Into The 70’s… A Look Back At The Final BPAA All-Star Tournament
by Dave Williams
A recent email from the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame caught my eye as I was scrolling through the headlines of the April Newsletter. The item was entitled “Rolling Into The 70’s,” and featured a photo of two men on a ladder outside Strike ’n Spare Lanes in Northbrook, Illinois.
I know those guys, I thought to myself, as I remembered many visits to Strike ’n Spare Lanes during my days at AMF. The two featured in the photo at bowlingmuseum.com were partners Charlie Crovetti and Art Bernardi, attaching All-Star banners to the outside bowling signs.
It was really a grand reopening of sorts, as Strike ’n Spare had been almost completely destroyed by fire just a few years before, in 1966. The duo decided to rebuild with 40 lanes, rather than 50, giving them more room inside the center for expansion of the East of Eden Restaurant, a popular lunch and dinner hangout in the rapidly growing suburbs just north of Chicago.
Within another ten years, Crovetti and Bernardi decided to sell the center to AMF Bowling Centers. Crovetti retired, but Bernardi stayed on as the night manager, before finally retiring in 1981. I can still remember putting together Bernardi’s retirement dinner and bowling fest at the lanes with Master of Ceremonies Sam Weinstein.
Always the showman, Weinstein had Chicago Tribune “special edition” newspapers printed for all of the attendees with a headline that read: “AMF Stock Crashes When Bernardi Announces Retirement.” It was quite an affair, with Remo Picchietti, Joe Kissel, Tom Kouros, Pat and Mary Bosco, Bill Spigner and even Jim Dressel from the Bowlers Journal in attendance.
After 29 Events, the All-Star Becomes the U.S. Open
There were many legendary events that took place at Strike ’n Spare Lanes. The 1970 BPAA All-Star was one of the last great events. It was the 29th meeting, with 192 men and 128 women competing in separate events. The winners of the grueling event were recognized as the national match game champions.
Bobby Cooper of Houston was the winner of the $8,000 first prize over Billy Hardwick of Louisville ($5,000), followed by Nelson Burton Jr., St. Louis ($3,500), Lindy Lundeen, Duluth ($2,500) and
Wayne Zahn, Tempe ($2,000).
Mary Baker, a top notch bowler from Long Island, N.Y., led the way for the women in capturing the $4,000 first prize over Judy Cook Soutar from St. Louis ($2,500), followed by Ann Feigel of Tucson ($1,500), Betty Kuczynski of Chicago ($1,300) and Pat McNeill from Durham, N.C. ($1,200).
The next year the men’s event was renamed the BPAA U.S. Open and was won by Mike Limongello of West Babylon, New York. It was Limongello’s 5th title in PBA competition. The women’s 1971 U.S. Open champion was Paula Sperber Carter. She won the event again in 1975, before deciding to call it quits with what doctor’s said was PTSD, or posttraumatic stress disorder.
MDA Telethon Memories From Strike ’n Spare Lanes
The MDA Labor Day Telethon was an annual televised event that raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The show was hosted on television by Jerry Lewis from 1966 until 2010. But even before those years of live national broadcasts, Universal Bowling and Golf, owned by Sam Weinstein, conducted an annual bowling broadcast between professional bowler Paul Krumske and Jerry Lewis from Strike ’n Spare Lanes. Here’s one of the half hour shows from 1959: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=V9iJkP8vGIE
It has been reported that Jerry Lewis raised more than $2.5 billion for MDA, including the bowling shows from Strike ’n Spare Lanes during the 1950’s and early 60’s. It has been said that the success of the bowling shows convinced MDA to stage the first national telethon from New York City in 1966.
In 2016, Lewis broke a five year silence by appearing in an online video for MDA, and announced that the MDA efforts must continue. It would turn out to be Jerry’s final appearance on behalf of MDA, as he passed away on August 20, 2017, at age 91.
Not a lot is ever mentioned about bowling when it comes to charities, but as you can see with MDA, or Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), the bowling community is most generous when it comes to brightening the lives of those in need.

The 2024 CAUSBC Scratch Masters Tournament was held on April 20, 2024 at Shake, Rattle and Bowl in the Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde. The tournament saw 38 bowlers bowl 5 games of qualifying on a 42 foot tough Kegel pattern. The field was cut to the top 8 who when competed in a double elimination bracket to determine the 2024 CAUSBC Scratch Masters Champion.
The top 8 after qualifying were:
1. John Richards +145
2. Ed Smaglik +98
3. Chris Stewart +93
4. Preston Davis +57
5. Kevin Wilson +46
6. Jayla Boyle +41 (only female in the field)
7. Ron Schloss +30
8. Carlos Villagran +14
Most of the bracket games were very close with some very good bowling, including a 279 (back 11 in a row) from Ron Schloss.
Kevin Wilson worked his way through the winners bracket while Ed Smaglik worked his way through the elimination bracket after losing his first match. Ed
Smaglik needed to beat Kevin twice to win. Both games were very close and came down to the 10th frame. Unfortunately Kevin ended up with splits in both 10th frames to give Ed the win.

Competition Underway in Reno for 2024 USBC Women's Championships
RENO, Nev. – The 104th edition of the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships kicked off Saturday at the National Bowling Stadium, with 53 teams taking part in the opening festivities from The Biggest Little City in the World.
The 2024 event will run across 65 days and conclude June 30. The tournament is expected to welcome more than 3,600 teams and nearly 15,000 bowlers to Reno to compete for titles across four average-based divisions (Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire) in team, doubles, singles and all-events.
It marks the tournament’s 13th visit to Reno and 10th trip to the National Bowling Stadium.
THE ROW Reno is the presenting sponsor of the 2024 USBC Women’s Championships.
An opening ceremony took place prior to the start of the first squad, which featured local and bowling dignitaries welcoming the tournament to Reno.
Speakers for the ceremony included THE ROW Reno Vice President of Casino Marketing Peggy Selvey and Vice President of Casino Operations and Community Relations Tony Marini, Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority Board Chair Charlene Bybee and President and CEO Mike Larragueta, City of Reno Vice Mayor Naomi Duerr and USBC Executive Direc-
tor Chad Murphy.
“It’s always an exciting time when the United States Bowling Congress returns to Reno Tahoe,” Larragueta said. “This decadeslong partnership continues to flourish, and we’re grateful to the USBC and to all the bowlers who’ve been a part of this journey.”
The excitement from the ceremony also featured a ribbon-cutting, the Mass Ball Shot and the ceremonial first ball by Patricia Wilson of Senoia, Georgia. Wilson and her teammates – Erika Ciminnisi, Candace Ciminnisi and Alicia Jackson – were selected as the honorary grand marshals to lead the first
2024 USBC Convention Concludes
LAS VEGAS – Delegates elected three board members, attended a variety of educational seminars and were on hand for a celebration of Glenn Allison during a jampacked 2024 United States Bowling Congress Convention and Annual Meeting, which concluded Thursday, April 25th at South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa.
The ballot for the USBC Board election originally had four candidates slated by the USBC Nominating Committee, however, one candidate withdrew from consideration prior to the convention, leaving Dennis Hacker of Longtown, Missouri; Chrissy Lee of Tampa, Florida; and Matthew Voltz of Fargo, North Dakota, as the final candidates for the board.
With three candidates for three open positions, all three were confirmed to the board in a vote by acclimation of the delegates. The board also announced the appointments of Hacker as president and Mike Cannington of Fort Myers, Florida, as vice president. Each will serve two-year terms in those roles beginning Aug. 1, 2024.
Team USA athletes elected David Haynes of Las Vegas and Matt Russo of Ballwin, Missouri, to the USBC Board, and the Athletes Advisory Committee filled a vacant board position by appointing Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio. Additionally, Christopher Floyd of Lockport, Louisiana, was reelected by the IBC Youth Committee to the USBC Board.
The new board members begin their three-year terms Aug. 1, 2024.
Convention week kicked off with exhibits and a trade show Monday, April 22nd, followed by a welcome reception for the delegates that evening. Day 2 got off to an energetic start when keynote speaker Marvelless Mark delivered a “rock-star themed” speech that had the delegates completely engaged while banging on drumsticks.
Tuesday continued with numerous educational seminars throughout the day and concluded with a fun-filled “Game Show” night for the delegates.
Wednesday featured the conclusion of the educational seminars in the morning, and a Meet the Candidates session for USBC Board candidates to start the afternoon.
Following the Meet the Candidates session, the first session of the Annual Meeting took place. That Wednesday afternoon session was highlighted by presentations from USBC charity partners Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), which provides recreational and therapeutic programs and services to America’s active duty and veteran service men and women, and Bowl for the Cure®, the year-round fundraising initiative sponsored by USBC in partnership with Susan G. Komen®. The always moving glow-stick ceremony honoring breast cancer sur-
squad of the 2024 Women’s Championships to the lanes.
Wilson knocked down six pins on the ceremonial delivery to officially usher in the 2024 tournament.
“I was honored to do it, even if I was extremely nervous,” Wilson said. “It was nerve-wracking, but it’s a sport that I love so I enjoyed doing it.”
There were some early fireworks to kick off the event in Reno, too, as a team in the Emerald Division lived up to its name – Untouchables of Grantville, Georgia. The team posted the early lead with a 2,081 total.
Joni Janssen led Untouchables with a 584 series and was joined by
vivors concluded the Bowl for the Cure presentation.
Thursday featured the final two sessions of the Annual Meeting. The presentation of Youth and National Recognition Awards took place during the morning session, including the Alberta E. Crowe Star of Tomorrow Award to Melia Mitskavich of DuBois, Pennsylvania, and the Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Award to William Smith of Smyrna, Tennessee.
Space Coast USBC (Brevard County Florida) was awarded the Association Excellence Award. USBC board member Glenda Beckett of Palmetto Bay, Florida, who also serves on the USBC Awards and Recognition Committee, surprised the Space Coast USBC delegates as part of the ceremony.
The morning session concluded with a report from USBC Board President Melissa McDaniel, followed by a series of committee reports, including presentations from the Strategic Planning Committee and from International Bowling Campus Youth Development.
The Business Report was delivered by Deputy Executive Director Jason Overstreet and, among other things, detailed the continuation of the USBC’s Why I Certify brand awareness campaign with all new stories to share from USBC members. A refreshed landing page can be found at WhyICertify.com.
The Annual Meeting continued in the afternoon with the Executive Director’s report from Chad Murphy. The highlight of Murphy’s presenta-
Sheri Pepper (522), Brenda Joiner (517) and Linda Nichols (458). The team had games of 617, 749 and 715.
The group was surprised and jubilant to see their team at the top of the leaderboard.
“It’s only the first day, but that’s still really cool for us,” Nichols said. At the 2023 Women’s Championships in Las Vegas, the team that took the lead on the opening squad in the Emerald Division ended up leading the rest of the way to take home the victory.
The members of Iowa 7 of Waterloo, Iowa – Teri Jennings, Shirley Bloodsworth, Kristi Reidy and Teresa Carriere – secured the win at the South Point Bowling Plaza with a score of 2,056, and the teammates returned for the opening ceremony this year and were presented with their gemstone trophy.
In addition to the excitement on the lanes this year in Reno, two bowlers – Sandra Jones of Burleson, Texas, and Rilla Yeater of Akron, Ohio – are scheduled to make their 50th appearance at the Women’s Championships, while Jacquelyn Nelson of Siler City, North Carolina, is scheduled to become the sixth bowler in tournament history to reach 60 years of participation.

tion was a tribute to USBC Hall of Famer Glenn Allison. Allison of Corona, California, set the participation record at the USBC Open Championships with his 72nd appearance in the event in February.
After a video tribute, Allison received a standing ovation from the delegates as USBC President Melissa McDaniel presented him with a commemorative gold, diamond and black onyx ring with the number “72” inscribed in it.
Following Murphy’s presentation, the meeting moved into the election and legislative segments. Board elections went as described above and there were no proposed bylaw nor rules amendments for the delegates to consider this year.
In other news from Convention week, the International Bowling Campus Youth Committee announced Seth Ketelsen of DeWitt, Iowa; Cody McCormick of Norwalk, Iowa; Sarah Nygaard of Lakeville, Minnesota; and Chris Pittard of San Antonio as its newest committee members.
The Convention concluded Thursday afternoon with a town hall meeting hosted by Murphy.
In 2025, the USBC Convention will return to South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas in conjunction with the USBC Women’s Championships, with the event scheduled to run from May 5-8.
