Matt Jones Claims TAT Spring Shootout Title
In an impressive performance from wire-to-wire, Matt Jones of Phoenix claimed the $5,000 first place prize at the TAT Spring Shootout held at Bowlero Mesa on March 18th & 19th, and took home an additional $180 for breaking a portion of the Progressive Pot. The 40-year-old recent inductee to the Metro Phoenix USBC Hall of Fame managed to make a difficult oil pattern look easy by rattling off a 739 series in qualifying and following that up with a 703 in the first three rounds of the finals, finishing with a 238 in the 4th round (the Grand Finals), where each game of the finals was bowled on a different pair,
The 42-foot TAT custom pattern at Bowlero Mesa with a 36-foot drop brush and 26.6ml of volume provided a moderately playable 2.59:1 ratio that proved tricky for most, but a cross-section of bowlers with diverse styles did find a way to score on it. Cut scores were highest in the Scratch division, averaging +61 across the three cuts, which is a pretty typical cut for a TAT, while the cuts for the three handicap divisions averaged +27, on the low side and indicating that the handicap bowlers had a bit more difficulty figuring out how to overcome the challenges of the pattern.
TAT Desert Southwest paid out a record $36,500 in cash prizes in this event along with numerous bonus prizes such as Roto-Grip high-performance bowling balls, Coolwick bowling jerseys, B3 Performance lane packages, Tenpin Toolkit subscriptions, and a paid entry into the next TAT Las Vegas national event! There were 148 competitors who rolled 225 main

event entries along with 179 entries in the VIP event.
This event again included a VIP side tournament as part of the entry fee with three VIP squads across the weekend. VIP squads are always the first ones bowled after the lanes are re-oiled, and the VIP tournament is a 2-game beat-the-board event where only the highest score (with handicap) counts and all divisions are combined. Bowlers use VIP squads as a low-risk way to test out the lane pattern on a fresh condition while still having a chance to win some money if they should toss a high game, while also getting a feel for how they want to play the lanes in the main event. Michael Taylor, Jr. of Roy, UT came away with the win and $500 for his 269 score (265+4), with Bronson Etse of Ft. Bliss, TX taking second for $250 with a 268 (268+0). Low-to-cash in the VIP tournament was 230.
The main event consisted of six qualifying squads spread across

two days with the TAT Finals on Sunday afternoon. After each two qualifying squads, a cut of 1-in6 per division was made for the Sunday Finals with two cuts on Saturday and a final cut on Sunday.
The 39 bowlers advancing to the finals returned at 4 PM on Sunday. They were guaranteed at least $300 and bowled singlegame eliminator matches against one to five other bowlers within their respective divisions, narrowing down the field until only one bowler remained in each division. Each division winner was guaranteed a minimum of $1,000 and a shot at the $5,000 first prize in the Grand Final match between all of the division winners.
In the 50+ Senior Handicap Division, Patrick Lombardo of Glendale made the cut with a 621 qualifying score (609+12) and reached the championship title match with a 220 (220+4), defeat-

Strike Force was at Bowlero Mesa, April 7th with 125 total entries (109 qualifying & 16 parlays) with a 1 in 3.67 cash ratio paying out over $8,000 in main and side event prizefunds.
Meg Carlson would throw a clutch strike in the tenth to take home her first AHT SFT title for $1,400! Congrats to Kyler Adams on 2nd place for $800.00. Also congrats to Lordan Ferguson on 3rd place for $450.00.

ing Brian Waugh of Phoenix with 160 (158+2).
The winner of the 189 & Under Handicap Division was Melody Rane of Phoenix, who qualified for the finals with a whopping 745 handicap series (619+126) and advanced to the title match with a 209 (167+42) over Ryan Griggs of Phoenix with 177 (148+29)..
To reach the title match from the 215 & Under Handicap Division, Caden Ament of Houston, TX made the cut with a 659 qualifying score (599+60) and advanced to the title match with a 213 (193+20), defeating Kenny Koen of Tempe with a 190 (170+20).
Eventual champion Matt Jones followed up his huge 739 qualifying score in the Scratch Division by squeaking out a nail-biter of a division title match victory over Brandee Seifert of Spokane Valley, WA, 199-192.
Each of the four division winners faced off in a single-game match with handicap for the title. All the finalists entered the Progressive Pot, which increases with each tournament entry and was carried over from the previous event, the 2023 TAT Holiday Classic. For this event, the Progressive Pot stood at $1,800!
The Grand Finals championship match featured highly accomplished bowlers in every division, and it showed in the title match where none of the competitors showed evidence of the nerves that one would expect in a highstakes match. Nevertheless, Matt Jones surged to an early lead with an opening spare followed by a 6-bagger and looked to have it locked up until he left a 2-8-10 in the 8th frame that created an opening for the others, all of whom were not far behind. None of the other finalists were able to take advantage of that opportunity, though, and Jones then sealed the victory with a crushing first strike in the tenth frame, which was followed by an uncharacteristic show of emotion from the usually calmand-collected hall-of-famer.
Because Jones was entered into the Progressive Pot, he not only won an automatic $1,000 bonus to achieve the $5,000 top prize, but he had a chance to win up to 70% of the remaining pot by throwing three strikes in a row across three lanes after his victory. He ultimately struck only once on three attempts to claim 10% of the $1,800 remaining in the pot, giving him a grand total of $5,180 for his victory. The remainder of the Progressive Pot will carry over to the next TAT Desert Southwest event, the TAT Morongo Classic at Canyon Lanes in Cabazon, California. Jones, the owner of an astounding 270+ 300 games and 160+ 800 series, felt the pattern was very playable, especially on the fresh, as long as one stayed left
of the 5-board and used the track area as the breakpoint. He threw a Hammer Scorpion Low Flare to get a more smooth response off the breakpoint and adjusted his ball speed to make sure the ball was leading the lanes properly.
Jones would like to thank the TAT staff for providing regionals to bowl to get prepared for the national TAT, and would also like to thank Virtue Bowling Supply, Hammer Bowling, and Royal Flush Apparel for everything they do in providing him the tools to succeed.
TAT Desert Southwest would like to thank tournament sponsors Roto-Grip, Coolwick, TAT Las Vegas, B3 Performance, and Tenpin Toolkit for their generous prize giveaways during the tournament and for their support of True Amateur Tournaments. TAT also thanks Jamie Khalifa and his entire fine staff at Bowlero Mesa for their great support of this event.
The next TAT Desert Southwest tournament is the TAT Morongo Classic being held at Canyon Lanes at Morongo, adjacent to Casino Morongo in Cabazon, California. Canyon Lanes has hosted many great events, including numerous PBA regionals as well as The Morongo Open (presented by TAT) in 2019. TAT is excited to return to Morongo for this event and hopes to make it an annual event. Enter all TAT events online at tatbowl.com.
TAT Desert Southwest is also hosting a summer league at Bowlero Mesa, the TAT Challenge Trios, where you can bowl on TAT Sport patterns all summer long and bowl in “Taste of the TAT” tournament finals EVERY WEEK. See the ad on page 11 of this issue for more information.

JBT Results; Mesa East Bowl; March 30, 2024

Cesar Padilla remained red hot, while Caden Henk needed OT to win his first, in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at Mesa East Bowl.
Dylan Donahue began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 237-226 win over Harper Schmidt. Strikes kept coming in the semifinals, as Drew Merrell stopped Donahue 269-246. Top seed Padilla began March with a sweep at Desert Hills, and put on a strike clinic to lead this high scoring event. He kept it up in the finale, locking out Merrell in the tenth for a 237-224 win, and the 12th title of his JBT career.
RJ Grace won the opening round of the handicap division stepladder finals 227-214 over Keegan Olson. Logan Trujillo then beat Grace 243-186 to advance to the finals. Trujillo hasn't been in a title match since a doubleheader sweep in Albuquerque three seasons ago, and had his hands full with top seed Henk, as they engaged in a lower-scoring, back and forth match. Needing eighteen in the tenth to win, Trujillo spared but then got seven on the fill, resulting in a 193 tie. Caden took advantage of the second chance by coming up with his only double of the match, plenty to win the tiebreak and his first career JBT title.
Nathan Harnit claimed the U17 subdivision crown with a win over Gage Baker, while Jadeyn Mabry kept in rolling in Girls Scratch with a win ovr Mackenzie Paige. Huge thanks as always to the team at Mesa East for a super smooth hosting job. Want in on all this fun for all skill levels? Just check out our schedule and come on down!

Tucson Metro USBC Update
By Mark Kerr, PresidentTucson Metro USBC’s 2023-24 season reaches its conclusion, I reflect on the accomplishments in the sanctioned leagues, sweepers and tournaments.

The numbers of bowlers sanctioned in leagues have increased, as well as the numbers taking part in the scheduled Tucson Metro USBC tournaments, including the Welcome Back Tournament that began the season. In addition, thanks to the bowler's generosity, more funds for youth bowling and other bowling efforts were raised through 50/50 ticket sales at the tournaments.
More bowlers took part in the Sweeper Tournaments Tucson Metro USBC offered, for which we are appreciative of. We also like to thank the bowling centers, staff, as well as our sponsors: Visit Tucson, Park Avenue Jewelers, 643 Cards for their support, as well as Sahuaro Trophy, for their work on the awards that were presented this season and Desert Bowler giving the opportunity to write for and publicize our tournaments and bowling events.
Masters events were a part of the schedule, including a Super Senior Masters tournament that Tucson Metro USBC offered for the first time, and was won by Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer Steve Hiscox. Kary Harris, Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer, won the Senior Masters and our youngest ever winner for the Masters Tournament, 20 year old Dylan Donohue, beat an impressive field to be crowned champion.
The Tucson Hall of Fame Class of 2024 was inducted during the 80th Annual City Open Championships and Tucson Metro USBC congratulates them on their induction,
Thanks to the bowlers, league secretaries and coordinators, a record amount was raised for the Tucson Metro USBC In-League Bowlers for Veterans Link Tournament!
An increased number of awards were given out this season. Thank you to Tucson Metro USBC Board Member Gloria Harris, for processing the thousands of local awards achieved by bowlers during this season.
This season would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication by Association Manager and Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer, Steve Harris. Steve coordinated the tournaments, recaps, bowling centers, tournament scheduling and all other items needed. Thank you again Steve, for another year of service and commitment to bowling.
Tucson Metro USBC Board
Members: Kari Snyder, Tucson
Metro USBC Vice President, Gloria Harris, Stuart Duncan, Lino Nava Jr, Belinda Hiscox, Terry Snyder, Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer, Ken Lewis, Joe Beard, Joe Shelton, Lyn Peterson and Brandon Knapp, played an integral part for this season’s success and thank you all for your work and efforts.
Tucson Metro USBC has witnessed a lot of history made, on and off the lanes during the 202324 season and we were glad to be and play a part in these milestones and accomplishments. We also saw the passing of members of our bowling family during this season, for which our condolences go to the family and friends of those who have left us to go bowling at Heaven’s Lanes. It is one we will remember for a long time.
Lastly, a big thank you to the bowlers of Tucson and Arizona, who bowled in our leagues and tournaments this season. Without you, none of this would be possible.
ANNUAL MEETING: Tucson Metro USBC will be holding their Annual Meeting, Saturday, May 4, 2:00 pm, at the Kaycee Club, 601 S. Tucson Blvd. Elections for Board Members as well as discussions and consideration of submitted proposals will take place. For more information call 520-591-0622 or email am@tucsonmetrousbc.com .

GCU's Ben Canfield Named Coachof the Year

Congratulations to GCU's Ben Canfield who on April 6th was named the Club Team Bowling Coaches Association, Men's Coach of the Year! Ben had this to say about receiving this award.
"I am incredibly honored to be added to the list of individuals who have received this award. I owe a lot to the student-athletes who have committed their time and efforts to the GCU Bowling program over the past 9 years, as well as the assistant coaches who have helped me along the way.
A special thanks goes to Mathew and Riley for their dedication to this year's squad. No one sees or hears the numerous text and phone conversations outside of team activities we've had
throughout the season, but the results speak volumes. Our team's success would not be possible without my "assistant mops".
The support from my favorite assistant coach, my wife, Lacey is second to none. I am eternally grateful for our relationship and the selfless ways she supports the team!
Lastly, to my first true bowling coach, Jordan Nassberg. Thank you for the wisdom you've shared over the years and for always being available for a phone call anytime I want to run something by you.
"Can't wait to wrap the season up at ITC Nationals next week! Lopes Up!"

Sun City Bowling Association Honor Score Awards
Sun City Bowling Association (SCBA) offers honor score awards for our members for 800 series, 300 games, 11 strikes in a row and 700 series for women; and for those bowlers averaging 175 and under, awards are given out for 75 pins over average game and 150 over average series.
Due to the growth and interest in 9 pin no tap leagues, we have expanded our membership to bowlers in no tap leagues at Bell and Lakeview Lanes in Sun City. Awards will include a no tap conversation of 75 pins over average game and 150 over average series awards. This will also give our no tap members the opportunity to entry SCBA tournaments.
Also, SCBA has a secret num-
ber award which is open to all members. Each month, the secret number, which is the members membership number located on the member card is posted to the SCBA board at Bell and Lakeview Lanes. If your number is selected, call the number on the announcement to win a cash prize.
For the month of March, 800 series awards were given to Doug Irwin (813) and Tom Frigon (816). 300 game awards were given to Shelley Zarick, Dennis Nemec and Alan Wagner. 11 strikes in a row award was given to Gregg Owens (290). 75 pins over average games awards went to Rachel Trojanovich, Betty Peterson, Loretta Ramirez, Darrell Larson, George Cameron, Jodi DeLuca,

Sun City Bowling Association

Sun City Bowling Association (SCBA) was formed in May 1986, to promote continued interest in the sport of bowling and to encourage fellowship among bowling participants.
SCBA administers and oversees numerous noteworthy bowling activities and tournaments for Sun City bowlers. The SCBC provides special recognition for outstanding scores bowled in regularly scheduled league fames. Furthermore, the association participates in the instruction of bowling fundamentals and sponsors a hidden number contest with its membership.
SCBA Membership
SCBA membership is open to all Sun City AZ residents and guest bowlers who bowl at either Bell or Lakeview Lanes, with an annual fee of $2.00 for the fiscal year running August 1 through July 31. Applications are on the bulletin boards of both bowling centers, and may be submitted to either the front desks at the lanes or directly to any association board member anytime throughout the year. A membership drive is also held each fall in which all bowling leagues are approached requesting that bowlers join the Sun City Bowling Association. There is an annual membership meeting with a speaker, refreshments and door prizes held each October.

Calling all high school and college students!
The Agent Ong Open is beyond excited to introduce the William and Florence Ong Memorial Scholarship, a heartfelt tribute to Carl Ong's cherished parents whose values continue to inspire him every day. NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes

Those of us who live in the Prescott area enjoyed a gorgeous drive to the valley on Saturday, March 16th, 2024! The trees and ground were sparkling with snow, and the fog added a layer of beauty to everything we saw! When we arrived at Johnson Pavilion in Sun City, the NAZB members who live in the valley told us they enjoyed their fifteen minute drives to get to the bowling center! I suspect everyone was happy to gather together on this day before St. Patrick’s Day!
Check-in began at 10:00A.M., and the ladies still arrived early! Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole was ready to check the ladies in, while Directors Ann & Kay Monagle were busy selling raffle tickets to 3 great raffle prizes. VP Karen Blomgren was running around taking pictures of the ladies! Our significant others were either there to bowl or cheer us on!
We would like to wish the following NAZB members a very happy March birthday: Kay Monagle (3/1), Muffy Vallely (3/11), Toni Sherrill (3/11), Patty Willis (3/13), Brittani Smith (3/17), Cindy Humphrey (3/18), Stormy Goudreault (3/20), Brenda Hoff (3/24), & Jen Godbehere (3/25). Ladies, we hope your day was/is a super special one!
Despite the challenging lanes, the ladies were up to the task of conquering them! Here come our winners! In Division #1 (ladies with averages up to and including 145), Michelle Broxmeyer (685) definitely came out on top! Three cheers for Michelle! She was followed by Diana Carlson (642), Pam Dellinger (638), Sheevaun Goff (636), Delma Largent (614), Victoria Gassett (614),

Tony Sherrill (607), Monika Menser (601), Sande Bobango (595), Linda Nelson (588), Laura Byers (587), Juliette Piercy (585), Pam Cirasole (578), Brenda Lee (571), and Claire Mulliner (569). Wow, that’s a great number of winners! Fifteen ladies out of thirty placed in Division #1. Awesome bowling ladies!
And, here comes the Division #2 (ladies with averages of 146 and above) winners! On the top of that list was Deb DiFerdinando (639). Way to go Deb! She was followed by Peggy Albright (627), Cindy Humphrey (608), Valerie Ames (594), Brenda Hoff (593), Karen Freyslaben (582), and Belinda Patrizi (577). Nice going Division #2! Seven ladies out of fifteen placed in this division.
And we aren’t done with winners! Juliette Piercy was thrilled to win the free entry to our next tournament! The following ladies came up rapidly to collect their raffle prizes: Sande Bobango, Myrna Dragon, Kristie LaShier, Stormy Goudreault x 2, Diana Carlson, & Kay Monagle.
As this article is being written, our April venue has changed. We will be bowling at Antelope Lanes in Prescott Valley. We will bowl 3 No-tap games there on Saturday, April 20th, 2024. We always bowl on the 3rd Saturday of the month, and our tournaments always begin at 11:00A.M.
We are a spectacular group of ladies of all ages coming from all over State 48! Ladies do NOT have to be sanctioned to join this group, and you do NOT have to be a current league bowler! If this interests you, please contact Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole (928-227-1258). New members are always joyfully welcomed! Come along and join the fun!
A Pin By Any Other Shape Would Be… Counterfeit?
by Dave WilliamsIt’s interesting to note in our investigation of unusual bowling pins, that federal agents don’t learn to spot counterfeit money by studying counterfeit bills, but they instead study genuine bills until they master every detail of the real thing. It usually takes about six months, but once they have mastered the artistry involved in the creation of the bills, the counterfeit currency stands out like the proverbial sore thumb.
And so it is with the peculiar bowling pin that was presented to us a couple of weeks ago to determine the origin and date of the unusual design. What’s unusual about the design of a bowling pin, you might ask? Well, just like the counterfeit bill inspectors, I could immediately see that this pin was an irregular shape, with a longer neck and larger top portion to the pin than those approved by the USBC in 2024.
I remember as a youngster that my father used Crane’s Crest paper in his printing business. The paper provided for a beautifully engraved wedding invitation or social form, but the paper came with some qualifications. Unlike the other paper that was kept in a warehouse area upstairs, the Crane’s Crest paper was kept in a separate area that was climate controlled and secure. You see, Crane was the provider of paper for the United States currency, and my dad was required to account for every large sheet of uncut paper.
One summer my parents went vacationing to see friends in Montreal and New York. They arranged for me to meet them in Washington, D.C., before returning to California. It was a chance for me to see all of the monuments in Washington, and meet with our congressman from Northern California, Don Clausen. As a 16-year-old traveling first class across the country, it was quite an experience. I’m sure that my parents must have made special arrangements, because I was definitely catered to by all the flight attendants at Pan Am. What an airline.
A special treat once I got together with my parents in Washington was a guided tour of the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing, on the ground level. I remember standing next to a pallet stacked with sheets of uncut bills. The amount of money was in the millions. A fact that may surprise most is that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces more than $540 million each day, according to bep.gov. Almost half of that total is $1 dollar bills.
Just like the security involved in maintaining the nation’s currency, a trained eye is able to immediately spot an unusually shaped pin. When I received the photograph and request regarding the origin
and date of the bowling pin from Kari Smith of the Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, I sent out feelers to some friends in the bowling industry to see if they agreed with me on the unusual shape, and any thoughts they might have on the origin.
One of the first replies that I received was from bowling historian and feature writer for the International Bowlers Journal, J.R. Schmidt. “This is a new one for me,” wrote Schmidt, acknowledging the unusual shape. “One possible explanation is that some earlyday bowling proprietors made their own pins. Instead of saying a pin had to be exactly so many inches in circumference, the rule would say the pin had to be between ‘x’ and ‘x-1’ inches. The ABC Rules were printed in the Spalding Guides from the early 1900’s.”
So, once again the Spalding Guides are referenced, as they were with our investigation of the bowling lane that was installed about that same time at the Fyvie Castle in Scotland. I find it interesting that the width and height of the pin must have been listed, but an exact outline of the shape of the pin was apparently not included, or perhaps was not deemed critical by those in charge of the ABC Rules committee of the day.
Another early response that I received was from Kate Marie Harmon, the woman that originally submitted the pin origin request to the museum. “Thanks so much for looking into this for me,” writes Ms. Harmon. “Harold (Hal) Milbauer was my great grandfather. They lived in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His daughter and my grandma is Ruth Beiswenger, and her daughter, my mother, is Lisa Harmon.”
“As a young man, Harold was a milk man delivering milk by a horse drawn cart to little cubby doors in each house. It was like being a paper boy. Every home had a standing order and got fresh milk delivered,” said Harmon. In his spare time, Harold would dabble in bowling, and became quite proficient, according to Harmon.
“He was actually part owner of a bowling center for awhile, where he taught bowling. My mom sent me this excerpt from a book called, They Came To Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America’s Capital, by author Doug Schmidt: ‘A physical education instructor at Milwaukee Washington High School, Carol Miller (a member of the USBC Hall of Fame) got hooked on bowling in 1960 after escorting one of her classes on an outing to Capitol Pladium Lanes. Hal Milbauer was working there and he asked if I wanted to learn to bowl properly, so he started giving me lessons.’”
The rest, as they say, is history. Carol Miller averaged over 200 for thirty-plus years, and won the USBC all-events title at the 1967 national championship, and a doubles title with Jane Leszczynski of Milwaukee in 1974. Miller continued to work with Team USA as a coach

for many years, helping the program claim more than 25 medals in the 1970’s and 80’s. Miller passed away in 2022 at the age of 88.
So, where does that leave us with the origin and date of the mystery pin? While Schmidt’s assumption regarding the creation of the pin in the early 1900’s is the best premise we have for now, it is also interesting that the bowling pin does carry a name and trade mark: “Sure-Strike No.1 Regulation Pin, Milwaukee, Wisc.”
Perhaps the Sure-Strike organization carried out the wishes of a bowling proprietor, or group of proprietors, in the manufacture of the pins, in the early 1900’s. I wonder if that oversized head portion of the pin made it easier for the pins to topple, serving as a 1900 version of the double voided pin? I did notice in a posting online at MrBowling300.net, that the pin dimensions were changed in 1961, thickening

the neck by a small amount.
The post goes on to say that the combination of laminated maple, plastic coating, and thicker neck, added 4 or 5 ounces of weight. The void in the interior of the pin was a response to that extra weight, and eventually the double voided pin was introduced, creating a pin that actually builds momentum when rocking… defying gravity!
I wish Walter Ray Williams Jr., bowling’s answer to Albert Einstein, read my articles. With his physics background he could probably answer these questions, at the drop of a pin…

Starlite Lanes Keeps Bowlers Rolling through the Years
Completely renovated landmark is one of Arizona’s longest running alleys

(article reprinted from Flagstaff Business News, March 10, 2024)
Ten pins, 16 lanes and 66 years of bowling on Route 66.
That’s the numbers game for Starlite Lanes, Flagstaff’s only bowling center and one of the state’s oldest bowling alleys. But old, in this case, does not mean outdated.
Since buying the business in 2010, Starlite owner Ron Getto refurbished the building with a new roof, flooring, seating and other improvements. He also modernized Starlite with state-of-the-art pinsetters, cosmic lighting and a digital scoring system with lane-to-lane communication.
“Like anything, technology has improved the sport and recreation of bowling,” said Getto, a former hedge fund CFO, who has become the kingpin of Flagstaff bowling, even though he’s never been a bowler.
High-maintenance wooden lanes have been replaced by synthetic surfaces. Bowling balls have advanced from hard rubber, to polyurethane, to reactive resin, an advanced form of polyurethane.
Starlite opened as a BabyBoom-era bowling alley in 1957
On The Road Arizona
when the blue-collar game was exploding across America. It was the pickleball of its era. Sports pages were full of league standings and bowling columnists shared news about keglers, a now outdated term for bowlers.
Stay-at-home moms with beehive hairdos had morning leagues. Men hit the lanes after work. Kids bowled in Saturday morning leagues or at birthday parties.
Bowling alleys are no longer smoky, but bowlers at Starlite still enjoy everything from craft beers to White Russian cocktails at its Side Door Lounge.
The Starlite building, a midcentury-modern gem with a decorative brick screen wall, is oddly juxtaposed with the 1930s Museum Club log cabin. The unlikely pair of entertainment venues have been Flagstaff staples for many generations.
Bowling in Arizona goes back at least 145 years. State historian Marshall Trimble reported that Vogan’s Saloon in Tombstone had bowling as early as 1879. Downtown Phoenix had the underground Gold Spot Bowling Alley from 19391950.
Arizona Highways featured a story on Phoenix Bowl-Air, 14 out-
Facebook page by Peter Corbett, An Arizona Travel and History Blog

Let it Roll Bowl in Sunnyslope opened in September 1961 as Northgate Bowl with 32 lanes, a cocktail lounge and billiard room. This midcentury modern building is at 12th Street and Dunlap Avenue. It's an example of Googie architecture that was designed by Pierson & Miller of Phoenix, ac-
door lanes of concrete that opened in 1940. Twin 25-foot bowling pins anchored the Bowl-Air sign.
Bowling in Flagstaff goes back close to 125 years. The 1899 Verkamp Building southeast of San Francisco Street and Aspen Avenue had bowling in the basement, as reported by The Coconino Sun.
Drug stores operated in the building’s street-level space. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks occupied the second floor and the building became known as Elks Hall.
In 1916, rowdy behavior at a Southside pool hall led the Town Council to require pool halls and bowling alleys to close between midnight and 7 a.m. Violators faced three months in jail or a $300 fine, equivalent to $8,850 today.
Mountain Sports currently occupies the Verkamp Building. Few remnants of the bowling alley remain.
Other Flagstaff-area bowling alleys included:
• The Navajo Ordnance Depot, which built four lanes for its workers in 1944, according to historian John Westerlund.
• In 1961, Roll-A-Bowl opened in Winslow. It burned down in 1983.
• Northern Arizona University installed six bowling lanes in the North Campus field house in the late 1960s, and closed roughly 20 years later.
• Len and Ida Sonka opened Sky-Hi Lanes on Main Street in Sunnyside in 1957, a few months before Starlite. It closed in spring 2000.
Bowling alleys have gone dark across America through the past five decades. In 1980, the U.S. Bowling Congress estimated there were 10,000 U.S. bowling centers.
Now, the number is down to about 3,800.
The Arizona State Association of the U.S. Bowling Congress lists 40 certified bowling alleys in Arizona, 24 of them in metro Phoenix.
Getto, 62, said he grew interested in buying a bowling center when business conditions flipped and demand exceeded supply.
“I recognized what a great business it can be,” he said.
Now, Starlite is the only game in town and it relies on local bowlers to keep it profitable, including league and recreational bowlers.
A group of league bowlers — Scott Turco, Alex Herring, Franky Lynch and E.J. Ahrendt — were bowling on a snowy Tuesday night even though their league game had been canceled because of the storm. Most of the lanes were empty.
“We have a lot of fun bowling in the league because we don’t take it too seriously,” said Lynch, 34, a financial advisor with Strategic Financial Planning.
Starlite’s revenue split is 50% from bowling, with leagues contributing 15% of the bowling business. The Side Door Lounge adds 25% of revenue, food is about 20%, while arcade games, retail and a pro shop kick in 5%.
Starlite briefly had competition from Bowlski’s 66. It opened with 12 lanes in fall 2022 at Flagstaff Mall but has since closed.
Getto is already gearing up for the 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026. He’s planning a giant mural on an outside wall celebrating Flagstaff’s dark-sky heritage with whimsical spaceships shaped like bowling pins and bowling ball planets.
cording to Modern Phoenix.
Let it Roll Bowl also has Stacy's Dunlap Bar & Lounge, a comedy stage and the Kingpin Grill & Pizza. Bowling was wildly popular in the 1950s and 60s with dozen of bowling alleys opening in Phoenix, Tucson and in several small towns in Arizona.
