History Made at 74th Tucson Women's Open Championships By Mark Kerr TUCSON - History was made at the 74th Annual Tucson Metro USBC Women’s Open Championships, held at Lucky Strike Bowl. A total of 27 teams took part in the tournament, which bowled the weekend of January 27-28, a 15% increase in participation over the previous year. On Sunday January 28, the bowlers took to the lanes for the doubles and singles events for the Championships and witnessed great bowling by an individual. Michelle McNew, bowled back to back 300 games, on lanes 15-16, during the doubles competition. McNew had her first ever 800 series, bowling an 829 series. To show how incredible her bowling was, she threw 29 strikes in a row. Her series was 229-300-300. She bowled the historical games and series with an Extreme Envy. It was the first time in the 74 year history of the tournament that Back to Back 300’s were bowled in the competition. McNew and her partner, Rebecca Boyko, won both the Scratch Doubles (1358) and Handicap Doubles event (1533) in Division 1. Michelle, Rebecca, and their teammates, Jes-

Michelle has bowled four 300 games, three of them in a two week time frame. When asked, she said her father taught her how to bowl and coaching got her to where she is today with her game. In 2023, she was the runner-up in the Arizona State USBC Queens Tournament. Strike Force was at AMF Tempe Village February 4th with 109 total entries (76 qualifying and 33 parlays) paying out over $5,700 in main and side event prize funds. Peter Trofimuk bowled his personal best 256 scratch score to take home his 2nd AHT SFT title and $600.00 (not in progressive). Congrats to Ryan Griggs for taking 2nd place, in back to back Finals appearances, for $750.00. Also congrats to Joshua Williams on 3rd place for $450.00!

When she is not bowling and practicing, Michelle is very involved with the Cactus Junior Program at Cactus Bowl in Tucson, giving back and helping the future of our sport. On her bowling success, as well as success off the lanes, Michelle summed it up, “You can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it.” Michelle McNew has put her mind to it, achieving success.
