30 countries now ready to accept BRICS currency

SHANGHAI : A growing number of countries are showing interest to join the BRICS Alliance and accept the new currency. BRICS could soon be co me B RI CS + as t he South African Ambassador, Anil Sooklal hinted that the alliance could expand this year. The decision to allow other countries to join the bloc could be taken at the next summit in August in South Africa. Sooklal confirmed that more than a dozen countries have formally and informallyappliedtojoinBRICS.

The alliance would become stronger after expansion as their GDPs would race ahead of the U.S. and other Western powers. This could put the dollar and the Euro on the back foot as developing

nations might end reliance on the USD. Therefore, BRICS stands in a better position to usher in a new global financial order than at any timebefore.

According to the latest report, 25 countries are ready to join BRICS and accept the new currency for international trade. The countries that have shown interest to join the BRICS alliance are Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sudan, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay,Venezuela, andZimbabwe. BRICS comprises five countries

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Therefore, a total of 30 countries are now participating to dethrone the U.S dollar from its globalreservestatus.

If these many countries ditch the dollar and begin cross-border transactionswithanewcurrency, the USD could be hit. The dollar could weaken on a global scale and find no meanstofunditsdeficit.Thesoon-tobe-released BRICS currency could have the power to eliminate the dollar’sdominanceinternationally.

The countries that are interested to join BRICS are also oil-rich nations. Therefore, thealliancecould force European countries to pay with the new currency for oil and not the dollar.

Indian Railways to rationalise Container Tariff to attract more Cargo

NEW DELHI: With the aim of increasing container movement substantially, Indian Railways is finalising new policy initiatives and rating structure to include more commoditiesinfreightbasket.

The proposed policy envisages changes in the existing one with introduction of new types of goods carriers such as double stack dwarf container, cube container and open top container besides rationalisation ofcontainerrates.

Container tariff is being rationalisedtobringmoreharmonyin the container ecosystem, said a seniorRailwayMinistryofficial.

Indian Railways has an ambitious plan of increasing loading from 4.14 million tonnes (MT) to 6 MT per day. In 2022-23, the railways has achieved 1,512 MT which is 4.14 MT perday.

Now according to the plan, the railways wants to increase the loading to 6 MT per day in order to achieve2,200MTby2025.

Accordingtotherailways, inorder to achieve this, the national transporter has to target freight commodities which are traditionally not coming to the rail system. To achieve this, the railways cannot relyonmineralsandoressuchasiron oreandcoalonly.

As per the National Rail Plan, in the national freight ecosystem nearly 35to40percentisthebalanceofother goods.Thisisroughly2,000MT.

However, the railways barely capture3to4percentofthisbalance. If the railways has to achieve 6 MT per day, it needs to capture at least20percentofthebalanceofother goodsinthenationalecosystem.

Other goods include automobiles, white goods, FMCG, electronics, commercialfoodgrains, agriproducts andengineeringgoodsamongothers.

The existing railway wagons including covered ones are not suited to capturing this traffic. In addition, the railways owned terminals are also notideallysuitedtocapturethistraffic.

Therefore, the railways is relying on containerisation to attract other goods.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the railways has taken many initiatives covering both container operation and its rating to increase container traffic.

However, outofthetotalcontainer traffic of the railways, nearly 70 per cent to 80 per cent is exportimport traffic. A very small percentageisdomestictraffic.

So, the railways is planning to bring in policy initiatives and rating structure that will increase domestic containermovementsubstantially.

Accordingly, a new approach in both policy and rating of container traffic is being worked out in the Railway Board and likely to be announced soon. The idea is to include more commodities in containers with the introduction of more types of containers such as doublestackdwarfandcubeandopen topcontainer.

India remains a bright spot, economy expected to grow 6.7% in 2024: United Nations

NEW DELHI: India’s economy is expectedtogrowby6.7percentinthe calendar year 2024, supported by resilientdomesticdemand, according to a UN report which said higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investment and exports this year for thecountry.

The World Economic Situation andProspectsasofmid-2023released on Tuesday said India’s economy, the largest in the South Asian region, is expected to expand by 5.8 per cent in 2023 and 6.7 per cent in 2024 (calendar year basis), supported by resilient domestic demand. However, higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investment and exports in 2023,itsaid.

The flagship report issued in January had said that India’s GDP is

projected to moderate to 5.8 per cent in 2023 as higher interest rates and global economic slowdown weigh on investment and exports. India’s economic growth is expected to remain“strong”evenasprospectsfor other South Asian nations “are more challenging.” India is projected to grow at 6.7 per cent in 2024, the fastest-growingmajoreconomyinthe world, theflagshipreporthadsaid.

Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Hamid Rashid had said at a press conference that India is a “brightspot”intheworldeconomy.

The mid-year assessment said that prospects for a robust global economic recovery remain dim amid stubborn inflation, rising interest rates and heightened

uncertainties. Instead, the world economy faces the risk of a prolonged period of low growth as the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the everworseningimpactofclimatechange and macroeconomic structural challengesremainunaddressed.

According to the report, the world economy is now projected to grow by 2.3 per cent in 2023 (+0.4 percentage pointsfromtheJanuaryforecast)and 2.5 per cent in 2024 (-0.2 percentage points), a slight uptick in the global growth forecast for 2023.In the US, resilient household spending has prompted an upward revision of the growthforecastto1.1percentin2023. Industry wary of rate revision for transport of vehicles via Railways

NEW DELHI: Road transport has traditionallybeenthedominantmode of transport to ferry the vehicles from the manufacturing hubs to various destinations in India due to its flexibility and accessibility. Gradually, automakersareshiftingtorailwaysto carrytheirvehiclesfromthefactories to market destinations mainly to cut logistics cost, meet sustainability targets and comply with emission norms. This also allows them to reduce the transit time, ferry larger volumes of vehicles in one go and ensuresafetyduringtransportation.

Chetak Group, which has been in the industry for over four decades, is also considering to venture into The company caters to auto OEMs including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, JCB, Kia,

Honda,amongothers.

The rail freight rates have also remained stable for the past 10 years, which has been a major support for the industry. However, the Ministryof Railways has revised the rates of haulage charge, increased the freight by 20% for the movement of Bogie Covered Autorake Double Decker Wagon (BCACBM) from the current financialyear.

“Automobile manufacturers have internal targets for utilization of railways and have been working towards achieving that. But with this rate revision, manufacturers may need to re-look at their targets and might shift their volumes to other modes of transportation,” Rajesh Menon, Director General, Society of Indian Automobile

Manufacturers(SIAM) said.

“Automobile sector was not anticipatingsucharevision.Rather,a revision in a phased manner would have been more appropriate, year-on-year basis, for business planning,”hesaid.

Industryexpertsbelievethatsuch a rate revision has come up at a time whentransportationviarailwayrakes was increasingly becoming a preferred mode of transportation. This rate revision may serve as a dampenerinthegrowth.

Bal Malkit Singh, ChairmanCore Committee & Former President,AllIndiaMotorTransport Congress (AIMTC) said that the 20% revision in rates signifies that the current freight structure is not viable inthelightofrisingoperatingcosts.

Exporters expect to see 11-13% growth in current fiscal

NEWDELHI:TheIndianindustry remains upbeat about exports in FY24 even as it stares at slowdown in demand for textiles, jewellery, engineering goods and chemicals fromtheUSandtheEU.

Exporters expect a growth of 11-13% in FY24. Cotton textile and apparel exporters expect 8-10% onyear growth in FY24. India clocked $450billionexportsinFy23.

Exporters expect business to resume fully after July, pinning their optimismonrecoveryintheadvanced marketsandimprovedorderbook.

“We expect $900 billion exports for the full year, of which $500-510 billion would be goods and around $400 billion services,” said Ajay Sahai, director general, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), adding that the first and second quarters of the calendar year wouldbeslowforexports.

Exporters said many clients had deferred their shipments from the last fiscal to this financial year and thoseorderswillstartflowingsoon.

Sahai said the volume of orders is lower but the frequency is higher. “By September, we will push orders

forChristmasandnewyear,”hesaid.

EEPC India Chairman Arun Kumar Garodia said the RussiaUkrainecrisis, slowdowninadvanced economies, high interest rates and geopolitical tensions will continue to adversely impact trade. “The order book will improve from July. We expect to end the full year with growthhigherthanlastyear,”hesaid.

India’s goods exports shrank 12.7% on-year to $34.66 billion in the first month of FY24, dragged by sluggish demand and recession in major markets while the trade deficit felltoa20-monthlowat$15.2billionin April.

“Looking at the uncertainty, the Government has not fixed any export targetforthecurrentfiscalandwould only forecast, but exporters and industry were asked to give their own targets,” an official said, adding that anoverallstrategybothforgoodsand servicesexportswasneeded.

The share of India’s services exports in overall global services exports has risen from 4% to 4.4%, saidWorldTradeOrganization. SectoralOutlook

Cotton textile and apparel exporters expect 8-10% on-year growth in FY24 after a slow first quarter.

“April was sluggish in terms of demand. There is not much demand internationally. We expect some pick up and exports to increase 8-10% over the last fiscal,” said a representative of the cotton textile industry.

Around 70% of India’s cotton textiles go to the US and the EU but demand is down almost 10% on the retail side, especially home textiles while readymade garments’ demand isdown10-12%overlastyear.

“Commodity prices have fallen, which impacted exports. However, gas prices in the EU and inflation are stabilising. This will help push demand for discretionary spends,” said a representative from the synthetictextileindustry.
