COPENHAGEN: A.P MollerMaersk reports strong financial results for 2024 with growth across all segments and significantly improved profitability with EBIT increasing 65% to USD 6.5 billion. Results were driven by higher container demand and elevated freight rates in Ocean, top line and volume growth
in Terminals and solid improvements in most Logistics & Services products Given the strong results and the strength of the balance sheet, the Board of Directors proposes a dividend of DKK 1,120/share and also separately announced the initiation of a share buy-back programme of up to around USD 2bn to be executed over a period of 12 months.

NEW DELHI: The cargo handled at India’s major ports has increased from 581.34 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 819.23 million tonnes in FY 2023-24, achieving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3 5 per cent, which is comparable to global standards, the Parliament was informed recently
During 2023-24, the cargo handled comprised 33.80 per cent liquid bulk, 44.04 per cent dry bulk, and 22.16 per cent container cargo, Minister of Ports, Shipping,
and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply
augmentations of major ports are continuous processes involving the construction of new berths and terminals, mechanisation of existing berths and terminals, capital dredging to deepen drafts for attracting larger vessels, and the development of road and rail connectivity, he added

“Our ability to navigate shifting circumstances and ensure steady supply chains for our customers was put to the test throughout 2024. Our efforts were rewarded with record-high customer satisfaction. We successfully capitalized on increased demand while enhancing productivity and rigorously managing costs — all of which contributed to our strong financial performance. With three strong businesses — Ocean, Logistics & Services, and Terminals — plus integrated offerings across the supply chain, we are uniquely positioned to support our customers in an era where geopolitical changes and disruptions continue to reinforce the need for resilient supply chains,” said, Mr. Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller –Maersk.
Profitability in Ocean improved compared to the previous year supported by a significant increase in freight rates reflecting the situation in the Red Sea and strong volume demand. High utilization and cost discipline ensured that Ocean operations were streamlined and able to tackle uncertainties. Operational costs were stable year-on-year, offsetting the increased costs and additional bunker consumption of re-routing the network south of the Cape of Good Hope Logistics & Services demonstrated resilience in 2024
with momentum building steadily each quarter culminating in volume growth, higher revenue and improved EBIT margin compared to 2023. Revenue grew 7% supported by solid growth in Warehousing, Air and First Mile product categories while profitability benefitted from progress in most products.
Terminals delivered its best ever financial results in 2024 with EBITDA and EBIT reaching record highs. This was driven by significant top line growth due to strong volumes along with inflation-offsetting tariffs increases, a better customer and product mix, and higher storage revenue
Financial Guidance
Guidance is based on the expectation that global container volume growth in 2025 will be around 4% and that Maersk will grow in line with the market. It is further expected that 2025 is likely to show greater supplydemand imbalance with continued new deliveries in the container shipping industry and a potential re-opening of the Red Sea Nevertheless, this imbalance may be largely offset by supply-side drivers and strong market demand. For the purposes of the financial guidance, Maersk assumes that the Red Sea re-opens mid-year for the low end of the guidance and re-opens at year-end for the high-end. Maersk’s outlook for 2025 is subject to considerable macroeconomic uncertainties impacting container volume growth and freight rates
TOKYO: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. a n n o u n c e d t h e s i g n i n g o f a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Be Forward Co., Ltd. (President: Hironori Yamakawa; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) for pure car carrier book and claim service (Note) for used car transport to Africa Be Forward is the first customer to use this service, and agreed to promote decarbonization of marine transport by using LNG-fueled vessels through this project. The contract term is 5 years from April 2025.
This MoU will enable Be Forward, a company that
transports used cars to Africa, to claim the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction value associated with the use of LNG as fuel in MOL’s car car rier fleet as its own GHG reduction through certificate. While MOL will continue to reduce its own GHG emissions through the launch of new LNGfueled car carriers, it will pursue initiatives that contribute to GHG emission reduction for its stakeholders as with its partnership with Be Forward, and society as a whole, aiming to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.

JAIPUR: In a significant move aimed at bolstering economic growth, the Rajasthan gover nment has accorded industry status to the logistics sector This decision, approved by the state cabinet on Tuesday, is expected to create an investor-friendly regulatory environment, streamline operations, and improve ease of doing business in the state. The newly approved policy focuses on developing robust logistics infrastructure, enhancing multi-modal connectivity, and attracting private investment.
These efforts are geared towards strengthening the state’s logistical capabilities and facilitating better access to local and regional markets.
Ajitabh Shar ma, Principal Secretary (Industries), highlighted the sector’s pivotal role in economic and social development, as well as environmental sustainability
“The policy will drive economic g r o w t h a n d i m p r o v e l o g i s t i c a l efficiencies. Given the sector ’s anchoring role, the Government has
decided to extend industry status to the sector,” he stated.
To further this initiative, the
Corporation (RIICO) will allocate land specifically for logistics operations in its new industrial areas. Additionally, the industry department is considering introducing a scheme to regularise existing warehouses, thereby bringing them into the formal sector and boosting efficiency
Strategically located, Rajasthan provides access to 40 per cent of India’s
infrastructural linkage between the northern and western regions.
T
immense potential in its economic corridors, which are surrounded by thriving production clusters and intersected by national highways, state
Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The policy envisions leveraging
technology to optimise logistics routes, reduce inefficiencies, and minimise environmental impact while ensuring seamless movement of goods.
Key focus areas include enhancing warehousing, cold storage, dry ports, inland container depots, air freight stations, trucker lay-bys, and logistics parks. To attract private investment, the government has outlined a series of incentives under the Rajasthan Investment Promotion Scheme. These include exemptions from electricity and stamp duty, interest subsidies, and access to land at concessional rates.
Additionally, the policy encourages development through the PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) model to expand existing logistics capacities and create new facilities.
B y p r i o r i t i s i n g t e c h n o l o g y, innovation, and best practices, the Rajasthan gover nment aims to transform the state into a leading logistics hub, ensuring a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable logistics ecosystem.
MUMBAI: Strong infrastructure development through initiatives like PM Gati Shakti and National Logistics Policy will help India find a place among top 25 nations on the World Bank Logistics Performance Index by 2030, a report said. India ranks 38th in the World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI) out of 139 countries and aims to be in the top 25 by 2030.
The report highlights that strong infrastructure development through initiatives like PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy are going to be the key drivers to achieve this (India's aim to be in top 25 by 2030 in LPI).
The Indian freight and logistics market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 8.8 per cent to reach USD 484.43 billion by 2029, up from USD 317.26 billion in 2024.
India is fast emerging as a global logistics hub, marking a significant milestone in its journey toward becoming a developed economy under the government's vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, it stated.
At present, the logistics costs in the country account for 13-14 per cent of its GDP , the study said, noting that the government is determined to reduce this figure to single digits b y 2 0 3 0 b y e n h a n c i n g i t s infrastructure and streamlining supply chains
Aligned with the Amrit Kaal vision, India is advancing multi-modal transformation through high-speed roads, hyperloops, and new airports, aiming to cut transport times by 66 per cent and boost logistics competitiveness.
As the world's fastest-growing major economy, India is projected to
surpass Japan and secure the fourth spot by 2026.
Achieving this requires strong policy support, including PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy, it stated.
Under PM Gati Shakti, 434 projects worth Rs 11.17 lakh crore have been identified to enhance logistics efficiency across key economic corridors like energy, mineral, cement, port connectivity, and high traffic density sectors.
The report also suggested the best way to address challenges such as i n f r a s t r u c t u r e g a p s a n d fragmentation is to move towards innovative solutions and advanced technologies which can also position India as a global logistics leader.
For this a coordinated effort between the Government and private sector is essential, it said.
NEW DELHI: The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) has reached a significant milestone in freight train operations during January, marking a new benchmark in India’s logistics and transportation efficiency, the Railway Ministry said recently. According to the Ministry, a total of 391 trains were operated on an average per day on DFC tracks in the first month of 2025.
“While the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) operated 209 trains per day (average), the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) ran 182 trains per day,” it said.
A press statement issued by the Ministry on Thursday stated that this achievement reflected the increasing reliance on DFC for seamless and
efficient freight transportation, reinforcing its role as a backbone for industrial and economic growth.
“Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited was connected to DFCCIL at Station New Unchdih on December 9, 2023. In January 2025, 175 rakes were handled, the highest ever recorded, reflecting the growing efficiency of DFCCIL in meeting industrial demands,” the statement said.
It added, “The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) is playing a crucial role in supporting the Prayagraj Division during the Maha-Kumbh Mela, ensuring the smooth and efficient movement of both passenger and freight trains. With millions of pilgrims expected to visit Prayagraj for this grand religious gathering, the seamless operation of train services
becomes a top priority.”
According to the statement, by successfully diverting 100 per cent freight traffic from East Central Railway and North Central Railway to EDFC, the freight corridor provided much-needed relief to the adjacent zonal railways and enabled the smooth operation of Mahakumbh Special trains on the saturated routes.
Acknowledging the vital role that the EDFC is playing in decongesting the Prayagraj Division of North Central Railway (NCR), the Ministry said, “This strategic shift of freight traffic is not only easing congestion but also enabling the smooth operation of Maha-Kumbh Mela Special trains, ensuring devotees can travel conveniently for their holy dip in the sacred waters.”
H Y D E R A B A D : I m a b a r i Shipbuilding Co.,Ltd, Japan’s largest shipbuilder, is eyeing opportunities in Andhra Pradesh with a high-level delegation led by its President Yukito Higaki meeting Andhra P r a d e s h C h i e f M i n i s t e r N Chandrababu Naidu recently and discussed potential for investments, officials said.
The meeting comes a couple of d a y s a f t e r t h e U n i o n B u d g e t announced a slew of measures to promote India’s shipbuilding sector In December, the Andhra Pradesh
government finalised a maritime policy, including for shipbuilding Founded in 1901 and privately owned by the Higaki family, the group builds ships from 10 yards in Japan. The shipbuilder based in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, has constructed over 2,940 ships since inception.
Andhra Pradesh has adopted a cluster-based approach to developing shipbuilding and ship-repairing industries by allocating land in a port area or identified cluster area at tailor-made subsidized rate for the anchor units which require more than
500 acres and overall investment of over Rs4,000 crores Land may be provided on a long-term lease (30- 60 years) at nominal rate.
“Our policy does not focus on shipbuilding alone; it focuses more on shipyard development by offering incentives for creation of yard infrastructure,” Praveen Adhithya C V, Chief Executive Ofcer, Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB), said on 24 January
The state is seeking to supplement the Centre’s efforts to promote the shipbuilding and repair industry.

Further, Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra has been approved for development as a mega container port to cater to the requirement of handling new-generation mega-size container ships.
Based on consultations with major ports, state maritime boards, and the Ministries of Railway and Road Transport and Highways, 107 road and rail connectivity infrastructure gaps for major and non-major ports have been identified and included in the Comprehensive Port Connectivity Plan (CPCP) prepared by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in September 2022. These projects aim to enhance connectivity between ports and domestic production and consumption centres, the minister said.
In response to another question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister tabled data showing the total cargo handled
at both major ports run by the Central government and non-major ports managed by private companies and state governments over the last four years. There has been a steady increase in the total cargo handled at all ports in the country, from 1,247.72 million tonnes in 202021 to 1,540.23 million tonnes in 2023-24. While 819.23 million tonnes of this cargo was handled by the major ports, 721 million tonnes were shipped through other ports.
The minister further noted that the government has taken various steps to streamline logistics for exportoriented industries, such as the construction of new berths, terminals, and parking plazas; the mechanisation and modernisation of existing berths and terminals; the streamlining of processes through digitalisation; and the expansion of hinterland connectivity through rail and road.
