MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Cypress Woods Members,

Thank you to all the members who attended the Annual Meeting in person and online in March. The new Board was announced with Diane Tache as President, Don Simard as Vice President, Mike Latimer as Treasurer, and Greg Applejohn as Secretary. Heather Perras, Linda Kantor, Phil Oreste, and Mary Romano return, and are joined by new comers Greg Applejohn and Mike Kiernan. The Board has begun deliberations on committee assignments and plan to announce their selections in the coming weeks.

Thank you to Barry Stivers who completed his second stint on the Master Board and also to Bev Ricketts who has served for the past 6 years as Secretary and Vice President. We thank them for all the time and effort that they dedicated to the club during their tenure.

On a personal note, I am delighted to return as General Manager to Cypress Woods after 7 years. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here during my last tenure so returning was an easy decision for my family and I to make. I have already had a chance to reconnect with so many of you in recent weeks and I have also enjoyed meeting so many new faces too. I plan to spend much of my time in the coming weeks and months working with the employees, committees, and board as I assess club operations and the member experience. Please feel free to stop by and discuss any concerns or question you may have. I value your input and I look forward to doing all I can to help keep Cypress Woods the great club it is today.

Controller/Director of Finance Update

I am pleased to share some exciting news regarding a recent development in our leadership team. After an extensive search for the controller position, which was listed as Director of Finance for Cypress Woods, I am delighted to announce that we have found an exceptional candidate to fill the role. Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to interview two highly qualified candidates, both of whom brought valuable expertise to the table.

Reflecting on my previous tenure here at Cypress Woods, I identified certain areas where enhancing our management structure could benefit the club significantly. Ensuring the continued prosperity and excellence of our establishment is always a top priority for me. In situations where the General Manager may not be available to address member concerns or emergencies, it is essential to have a capable individual who can step in seamlessly. Thus, I have made the decision to create a new position at Cypress Woods: Assistant General Manager/Director of Finance. These roles are interlinked, and having a qualified candidate in this dual capacity will provide invaluable support and synergy for the future growth of our club. I am thrilled to announce that we have successfully filled this pivotal role with the appointment of Kyle Angell. Kyle brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to our team, and his return to Cypress Woods marks a significant milestone in our journey towards excellence. His dedication and professionalism will undoubtedly contribute to fostering one of the strongest leadership teams this club has seen.

In the coming month, Kyle will be dividing his time between Cypress Woods and Colliers Reserve until Sean finds his replacement. Once the transition at Colliers Reserve is finalized, Kyle will be fully dedicated to his role here at Cypress Woods. I am personally excited to take on the role of mentor to Kyle as he pursues his aspirations of becoming a General Manager. His decision to return to Cypress Woods is a testament to the strength and appeal of our club, and I am confident that together, we will achieve great success. Thank you for your continued dedication and support. Should you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Sincerely,

MASTER BOARD OF DIRECTORS

NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow Members,

As the end of another outstanding season comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank Don Simard for his time, efforts and leadership this year as our Master Board President. Through pain and recovery from a severe injury and surgery, Don never missed a beat in making decisions and working to make this club a wonderful place, we all call home. Don has been instrumental in working with the committees and management to initiate the outdoor painting of the clubhouse, pro shop and fitness center, the beautiful new landscaping at the clubhouse and the reconfiguration of the parking lot to increase our handicap parking and regular parking spaces for all. This project has been approved by the entire Master Board and will begin late summer into early fall. This project will be at no cost to the owner!

I would also like to thank Barry Stivers and Bev Ricketts for their insights, commitment and leadership as Master Board members. Between the two of them, they have served our community for over a decade. They have worked daily, giving up their time, to assist in making decisions to enhance the member experience at Cypress Woods. We will truly miss their wisdom and experience.

A final thank you to the committee chairs and the committee representatives this year. Their volunteer commitment to Cypress Woods is greatly appreciated. We hope you will consider joining one of these committees next year or if you have a specific talent to enhance our club, please reach out to any board member or our management team.

As your new president, I hope to continue the momentum with our communication and transparency efforts. I also hope to engage our owners in informational focus groups to gain feedback on our aging amenities and to continue the strategic planning process. If you missed the most recent board workshop, please check out your email with a link to a short video on the kitchen along with the minutes of the meeting. The Master Board will continue to study options to determine priorities and funding to update our valuable assets and amenities.

I am excited to serve as your president this year and I am always interested in your ideas and opinions regarding your member experience at Cypress Woods. Whether you are staying at Cypress Woods for the summer or you are heading to other parts of the continent, stay safe, stay well and cherish the fond memories you made this season.

With many members packing up to head north for the summer, others look forward to reciprocal season and the chance to try out many of the private clubs in the area. In just under a month, clubs will begin to make reciprocal agreements for the months of May through October. At the end of April, a list of the clubs we will be reciprocating with will be available online and in the Pro Shop. Please remember that you represent Cypress Woods, our staff, and all our members. With that understanding, we ask that you please be polite and courteous when playing other clubs as we are their guests for the day.

The Crème Brûlée Controversy

Crème Brûlée, which translates directly into “burned cream,” is a baked dessert made from heavy cream, eggs, sugar, and vanilla. It has a pudding or custard like consistency, and it’s topped with a crunchy layer of melted sugar that should crack when tapped with a spoon. The dessert is served cold with the caramel top being warm.

The centuries old recipe still has its origin disputed by many countries. France is generally considered the birthplace of today’s known recipe of the rich dessert. The first appearance of a recipe for Crème Brûlée came in 1691, out of a cookbook belonging to a chef to French Royals. Francois Massialot transcribed the early Crème Brûlée recipe in a cookbook called “Royal and Bourgeois Cuisine.”

According to some Culinary Experts his recipe was probably not the first instance of the dessert. Another dish of Spanish origin called Crema Catalana dates to the 14th century and is thought to have inspired Creme Brûlée due to their similarities. The only difference is that Crème Brûlée is made with cream, while Crema Catalana is made with milk.

England is also country that Claims to be the birthplace of Crème Brûlée. They believe it was invented at Trinity College in Cambridge. There the dessert is referred to as “Trinity Burnt Cream.” Crème Brûlée shows up in a lot of recipes and cookbooks under this name around the 1630s. This would mean that Massiatot’s version was 60 years behind the times, it would seem.

Crème Brûlée Recipe

Ingredients (serves 8-10)

1 qt Heavy Cream

1 cup Granulated Sugar

1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract or 1 Vanilla Bean cut in half

12 ea Egg Yolks

Pinch of Salt

Sugar as needed for finishing

1. Heat oven to 250 degrees. In a saucepan, combine cream, vanilla bean or vanilla extract and salt; cook over low heat just until almost at a boil. Let sit for a few minutes, then discard vanilla bean if using.

2. In a bowl, beat yolks and sugar together until lightly fluffed. Stir about a quarter of the vanilla cream into this mixture, then pour sugar-egg mixture into cream and stir. Pour into 8 to 10 ramekins (5-7 ounces) and place ramekins in a baking pan or similar pan.

3. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the centers are set. Cool completely. Refrigerate for several hours and up to a couple of days.

4. When ready to serve, top each custard with about a teaspoon of sugar in a thin layer.

5. Place ramekins in a broiler 2 to 3 inches from heat source. Turn on broiler. Cook until sugar

COMMITTEE CORNER

The Audit Committee received audited financial statements on March 11 by the professional accounting firm. A $114,000 operating surplus was identified for 2023. Auditors provided a clean opinion on the audit report. The audit report was shared at the annual homeowners meeting in March and is available for viewing on the Cypress Woods website.

The Finance Committee will be busy during the summer, meeting 3 - 4 times in August and September to work through the budget process. Monthly financials for February were not available due to the departure of the Club’s controller. There is an active search for a new controller who will generate the necessary reports to be reviewed. The financial committee continues to review the current portfolio of investments and existing controls and processes. There is currently $6 million in reserves. Further to the Board Workshop in March, the finance committee will assist to explore the funding options for various projects such as a kitchen expansion and upgrades to the recreational areas.

The Golf Committee is pleased with the progress on pin removal when putting. The GPS has continued to support pace of play. Carts can no longer drive close to the green or in the parking lot. The GHIN handicap system is in place and members must post scores within 24 hours of their round. The 2024-2025 list of events was discussed at the March Committee meeting.

The Long Range Golf Course Refurbishment Committee is an ad hoc sub committee of the Greens and Grounds Committee. It was established in May 2022 and work is now starting to progress. A plan will be developed which will be presented to other committees, staff and owners before going out to bid. The Committee has been working with Chris Clark Construction and recently visited Wildcat Run to tour the course to see how the refurbishment will be done. Our irrigation is over 20 years old and will also be replaced as part of this project. The Putting Green outside the Pro Shop will be the first area to be refurbished during the Summer of 2024. This summer, the golf course will also be surveyed and drone images will be taken. During 2025 the driving range will be redone and then in summer of 2026 the golf course will close and the major work will be completed. The committee welcomes any comments from the members.

The Communication Committee is helping to identify content for the spring (April/May) and summer (June/July/August) editions of The Source. The App continues to be a helpful communication tool. The summer projects for the committee include discussion and re-design of the Cypress Woods website to make it more user friendly and encourage more use by members. A “new” community guidebook will also be developed this summer with important information the owners can keep in their homes as a reference tool. The Committee is working with the House Committee on the end of season events and dining survey.

The Recreation Committee reports an excellent winter season with lots of activity and participation. The committee is looking for any community member who may be qualified and interested to provide AED and CPR training. The committee is requesting the Board to consider revisions to the Spa (hot tub) rules regarding children to be updated to “children must be accompanied by an adult” Members should adhere to the club rule and refrain from reserving of lounge chairs at the Pool or fitness equipment in the fitness center. The Gazebo chairs are reserved for dining members between the hours of 11 - 5. Water Aerobics continues to run through April. The spring pickleball court schedule is now in effect. Replacement of the flags on the pickleball courts to a more effective windsock was requested. It was agreed that members could bring guest(s) to the beginner pickleball lesson area as long as the member was present and the guest fee has been paid. The South West Florida pickleball spring league is now underway. There are 6 Cypress Woods teams participating.

The Strategic Planning Committee presented a review of the Strategic Plan at the March Board Meeting. There have been many accomplishments during the last five years when the original plan was created. An updated SWOT analysis highlighted the Club’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Members should review the document found on the Cypress Woods website and are encouraged to provide feedback on “what are the critical issues facing Cypress Woods.” An email has been created for your comments strategicplanningcypresswoods@gmail.com.

The House Committee had Chef Matt attend the March meeting to further discuss buffet menus for the next year. A House Committee survey will be sent to members in early May to ask members opinions on the 2023-2024 activities and dining and encourage new ideas. The committee will work through the summer to design the options for 2024-2025. A new line dancing activity was added to complement the Ben Allen Band event on the tennis courts. Winning Wednesday returns on May 1st for the summer.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE

Cypress Woods Members,

Hello from the golf course maintenance staff. The weather has certainly not been the best this year. We have been spoiled over the last few seasons with warm temperatures and no rain. Hopefully, now that we are out of this El Nino pattern, we will have a great finish to our season.

Taking care of our course has been more important this year than ever. With the slower recovery of turf, filling divots and repairing ball marks is crucial. One comment that continues to come up is golfers yanking flag sticks out of the hole which damages the edge of the cups. It takes no more time to pull the flagstick straight out correctly and carefully. When you consider how many rounds we play daily, the cup edges naturally get worn, so please help us keep them at their best by removing the flagstick properly.

Greens are recovering from the El Nino weather, and the Tees and Fairways are starting to green up and grow. We have been spraying multiple fertilizer apps on these areas and others that need it. This will get our Bermuda off to a great spring start. Once the Greens start to grow, we will begin vertical mowing to promote lateral growth and help with thatch layers. If you have played recently, you may have noticed small holes punched in the greens. This helps with water movement/ management as well as thatch control. In the growing season, we will continue to do this periodically as needed, but the holes will cover over in 2-3 days and will not affect the ball roll. This process is required to provide the best putting surface possible.

Also, please continue to fill divots and repair ball marks on the greens. Thank you.
