NOVEMBER 2023
MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Cypress Woods Members, After much demand, we will continue Winning Wednesdays in the Grill Room through December. Pat Curcio has agreed to continue playing the piano, so we look forward to many more entertaining nights over the next few months. Also, Monday night is Cigar Night on the Terrace, so we will have beverage service available every Monday from November through April. The Communications Committee have worked extensively with Director of Communications Nicolette to create the new Source layout you are reading right now. These dedicated members and staff have put in a tremendous amount of work this summer to enhance communications, and it is clear from the Communications Survey that a large number of members rely on the Source to keep up with Club news. We hope you enjoy the additional information within, and we look forward to sharing much more with you in the coming months. We also launched our new Cypress Woods app last month. You may now make a dining or event reservation, reserve a pickleball court, sign up for a fitness class, and even link to Chelsea and Golf Genius all from your phone! You will have access to the roster and can see all your reservations throughout the club amenities all in one place. Staff are trained to assist you in setting up your device so please ask for assistance, we are happy to help.

MASTER BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Cypress Woods Members, The budget for 2024 was approved at October’s Board meeting. Owner Members will see an increase of $540 for club operations and $350 for club reserves which will bring total annual dues to $6908 for 2024. There is no increase to the cable and high-speed internet bill which will remain at $1032. Details of the budget are available on the Club website. Social Members will see an increase of $657 for a total of $2763, Annual Members Family will increase $1425 to $11,053, and Annual Member Single will increase $1335 to $10,362. We have also made two changes to the Social Membership amenities access; they may no longer bring guests to Open Play on the pickleball courts, and they will now have 25 days in advance of an event to make a reservation, while all other membership categories will have 30 days. The Board recognizes the substantial revenue that nonresident members bring to the club that directly affects the dues of the Owner Members. While the Board has made some minor changes to the amenities access this year, we have no plans to eliminate any nonresident memberships, and welcome all Members back for another year of fun at Cypress Woods. The Board will continue to review options to help alleviate the parking concerns at the club and are reviewing options to help address the functionality of the kitchen in its current layout. We have enlisted the help of some professionals in these areas to help guide the Club in the right direction. We will have more to report in the coming months as we review all options.

ON THE GREENS GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE Cypress Woods Members, We hope everyone had a safe and healthy off-season! The 2023 season has begun, and we are excited to see members returning and enjoying the golf course. Cart traffic will be an area of importance this year, we will need help from our membership. Adhering to signage and using the 90-degree rule will limit stress on turf and help playability throughout the season. When exiting the cart path, exit parallel to where your ball is and re-enter the cart path if possible. Try to avoid unnecessary driving on turf. As a reminder, this year's Farmers' Almanac predicts a strong El Nino for winter this year! How does El Niño affect golf courses? El Niño affects golf courses in several ways: • Increased rainfall creates wet environments and softer playing conditions. • Increased stress on greens and collars • Frequent plugged lies • Short roots and larger ball marks on greens • More “mud balls” in fairways • Less ball roll in fairways • Tire rutting from mowers and golf carts • Greater chance for disease on green's • Decrease ball speed The combination of wet, cool, and cloudy conditions can cause considerable turf stress. Turfgrasses need sunlight for growth. Prolonged cloudy weather causes turf to deplete carbohydrate reserves that are stored in roots, weakening the root system. Roots take up oxygen from soil and saturated soils make it nearly impossible for weakened roots to survive. We will continue working hard to keep up the conditions of the course for our membership. Pine straw installation along the roadway will begin in the upcoming weeks. Golf Course potting soil and flowers will be added and completed by November 1st. All palms on the course have been trimmed and removed from the golf course. Everglade palms will be trimmed over the coming weeks, these are the tall skinny bunched palms. Cart paths will continue to be painted and will be completed before or by December 1st. Bridges and stairs will be pressure washed to remove slick surfaces and protect the integrity of the wood. Golf course maintenance takes great pride in providing members with the best conditions possible and always looking for ways to improve your experience. Please do your part in helping us achieve this goal by repairing ball marks, sanding divots, and navigating the course safely and smartly. Let's have a great 2023-2024 season!

Christmas Gifts for Children at the Gargiulo Education Center If you are so inclined, please stop into the Clubhouse Administrative Office to pick up and sign out a Wish List card (or two!) with a child’s name and age on it, and purchase a ($30 to $50) gift on the Wish List they provide. Please wrap the gift and affix the label provided (with the Wish List card) on the gift and return to the Clubhouse Administrative Office by Friday, December 15. It’s as easy as that! The gifts will be delivered to the children at their camp on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. If you would like to volunteer to be a part of the delivery or you would like to visit the children at the Center any other time, please contact Sharon Lapierre at 920-204-4165 or Mary Asta at 212-750-5894.
You may have seen when some of the children have come to visit Cypress Woods for Dining Etiquette Lessons. These low- income, at risk migrant children are students who live in camps behind the Gargiulo Education Center. Their parents are hard-working, low-income tomato and potato pickers that do not speak English. They follow the work; therefore, the children are uprooted all the time. The Gargiulo Education Center is a pro bono agricultural, migrant, and at-risk after school program founded in 2000 under the umbrella of Redlands Christian Migrant Program. In 2014, the Gargiulo Education Center became its own 501c3, and several Cypress Woods members are volunteers and donors. Instead of returning home from school to empty homes, the Gargiulo Education Center provides academic enrichment opportunities in a safe and nurturing environment to low income, disadvantaged, at-risk students from kindergarten to high school (K-12) at no cost to the families.

CHEF’S CORNER
The History of Sourdough in the United States
The history of sourdough bread in the United States can be traced to the Californian Gold Rush where European immigrant miners instead used a sourdough starter to make bread over campfire. Sourdough bread became stapled in American culture when Bakery owner Isidore Boudin, a French master baker from Burgundy, France, developed the special flavor held in these gold miners’ sourdough starters. The establishment of the Boudin Bakery circa 1849, made San Francisco Sourdough famous. The Bakery is now a huge tourist draw card for visitors to San Francisco and for inspiration for home baker's wishing to recreate the famous sourdough flavor at home. The Boudin Bakery still uses the same sourdough starter in their bread today that can be traced back over 150 years to a gold miner's starter. The starter has continued to be refreshed daily with flour and water and continues to have the same characteristics as the original wild yeast, thought to be unique to San Francisco. The included recipe uses a Poolish, not a Sourdough Biga. It’s a bit easier.

Annual full-time tenant Lease Renewals to the same property require no additional fees, but do require submission of a new Rental Application and updated copy of the Renewal Lease at least 30 days before expiration date. COMMITTEES CORNER COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT The Communications Committee has been meeting monthly throughout the summer. Our biggest project was the development and implementation of the communication survey and we thank all those that completed and contributed comments and suggestions. There was a 58 % response rate to the survey which was excellent. We received 715 responses. Based on research guidelines, this level of response equates to a high level of accuracy in our data so that we can confidently make decisions and changes. Owners provided great feedback and suggestions in the survey for future Source editions. The survey showed that 75% of owners read the Source monthly and almost 50% of you want it in print format. We will be expanding the Source to 16 pages in season to be able to add more important content to keep everyone up to date and informed. We are having some additional meetings specific to making changes that we hope to roll out new changes and additions throughout this season. We see that emails and The Source are the main preferences for owners to get updated information. With Nicolette as our full time Communications Director now, we will be able to add to the frequency of our emails to keep everyone well informed. We received some great feedback on the website and know we need to do some work on navigation and content this season. We received some great feedback on Board meetings, including owners’ frustrations on audio issues, so we hope this new system we are using today will improve the ability for all owners to listen to updates from the Board and staff. We will be creating a full directory of contacts for staff, Board and committees so that it is easier for you as owners make contact with suggestions or concerns.
FINANCIAL FOCUS At Cypress Woods we are constantly evaluating technology and assessing whether the club could benefit from new innovations. The finance department is no different, and we are excited to inform you that the CWG&CC Mobile App is now available to download. Within the mobile app, Members have the option to view their monthly statements, and even open and view chits from their statements. Members will continue to have the option to pay online on the website and now also on the app. If you have any questions, feel free to stop in and speak with the Accounting Department.

Thank you to our members who have contributed articles and photos. Space is a commodity and is available for photos of Club members attending Club events, as well as Milestone Events (i.e. 50th Wedding Anniversary, 90th birthday...if you aren’t sure ask us). Submissions are due by the 10th of the month prior to the publication. Please email your items to office@cypresswoodsgolf.com (include names and captions with your photos).
