A Ban on Book Bans: California Is Second State in Nation to Pass Law

Antonio Ray Harvey | California Black Media

Before Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill (AB) 1078, legislation prohibiting book bans in California, he told Assemblymember Corey Jackson (D-Riverside), who authored the bill, “I appreciate you and your leadership.”

“ REMARKABLE,” continued the Governor. “We’re living in a country right now in this banning binge, in this cultural purge that we’re experiencing, all throughout America, and now increasingly here in the State of California, where we have school districts, large and small, banning books, banning free speech, criminalizing librarians and teachers.”

Newsom said codifying AB 1078 into law shows that California isn’t just “pushing back

rhetorically” against what he describes as a “banning binge” happening across America.

AB 1078 also makes it illegal to censor instruction material and it mandates schools to provide access to textbooks that educate students about diverse cultures and people, according to Jackson, who was with the Governor when he signed the bill, Newsom said Illinois passed a similar bill that takes effect in January. California is the second state in the nation to make it illegal to ban books or restrict learning material that includes information about the LGBTQ+ community, or specific races or ethnic groups. However, AB 1078 takes effect immediately because the Legislature passed it with an urgency clause.

On Sept, .7, AB 1078 passed in both the Assembly (61 to 17) and the Senate (31 to 9).

“We're taking a firm stand against book banning in California's schools, ensuring that our students have access to

a broad range of educational materials that accurately represent the rich cultural and racial diversity of our society,” said Jackson, a member of the California Legislative Black Caucus, that day.

AB 1078 requires school boards across the state to receive approval from the state Board of Education before stripping any instructional materials or books from classrooms and school libraries or “ceasing to teach any curriculum.”

AB 1078 now extends to cover school libraries, prohibiting any censorship or removal of books, instructional materials, or curriculum resources that state law requires be reflected in instructional materials.

The bill's passage in both legislative houses demonstrates California's commitment to preserving academic freedom, fostering diverse perspectives, and discouraging the practice of book banning, Jackson observed in an Aug. 21 statement.

Jackson introduced the bill after Temecula Valley Unified School District attracted attention when most of its schools barred a state-approved history textbook that features renowned politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Milk was assassinated along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone on Nov.

27, 1978, 11 months after he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

On Aug. 14, parent groups opposing AB 1078 voiced their opinions about Jackson Bill and AB 5, the “Safe and Supportive Schools Program” at a rally held on the southeast lawn of the state capitol.

Newsom appoints women’s advocate to finish out Sen. Feinstein’s term

A trusted adviser to Vice President Harris and leader of the nation’s largest organization dedicated to electing women, Butler will make history as California’s first openly LGBTQ United States Senator and the first Black lesbian to openly serve in Congress in American history

SACRAMENTO —

Gov. Gavin Newson didn’t waste time in appointing someone to take Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat. Newson announced that Laphonza Butler — the president of the nation’s largest organization dedicated to electing women, EMILY’s List — to complete the United States Senate term of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, which runs through 2024.

Butler, a longtime senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris, labor leader, and advocate for women and working people, will be the

first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the Senate.

She will also be the first Black lesbian to openly serve in Congress in American history and the second Black woman to represent California in the Senate following Vice President Kamala Harris.

“An advocate for women and girls, a second-generation fighter for working people, and a trusted adviser to Vice President Harris, Laphonza Butler represents the best of California, and she’ll represent us proudly in the United States Senate,” said Gov. Newsom.

He continued, “As we mourn the enormous loss of Senator Feinstein, the very freedoms she fought for — reproductive freedom, equal protection, and safety from gun violence — have never been under greater assault. Laphonza will carry the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to break glass ceilings, and fight for all Californians in Washington D.C.”

Butler comes from a working-class family. Her father — a small-business owner — was diagnosed with a terminal illness and died when Butler was 16 years old. Her mother was

the household’s sole provider, working as a classroom aide, a home care provider, a security guard and a bookkeeper to provide for Butler and her two siblings.

With her selection to the Senate, Butler will step down from her role as president of EMILY’s List, where she was the first woman of color and mother to lead the organization. Prior to joining EMILY’s List, Butler ran political campaigns and led strategy efforts for numerous companies, organizations, and elected leaders — including for Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Butler was a key leader of Vice President Harris's presidential campaign. For more than a decade, she served as the president of the largest labor union in California — SEIU Local 2015 — a union representing more than 325,000 nursing home and home-care workers throughout the state.

Previously, Butler served as President of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW) and also as SEIU’s Property Services Division Director,

in which she was responsible for the strategic direction of organizing on behalf of more than 250,000 janitors, security officers, window cleaners, and food service workers across the country. Butler also served as an SEIU International Vice President and president of the SEIU California State Council.

Butler was the former director of the Board of Governors of the Los Angeles branch of the Federal Reserve System. In 2018, she was appointed to the University of California Board of Regents by Governor Jerry Brown, where she served until 2021. She served in various other roles, including as a board member for the National Children’s Defense Fund, BLACK PAC, and the Bay Area Economic Council Institute, and as a fellow for the MIT Community Innovators Lab.

Butler was named a “Champion for Change” by President Barack Obama.

Butler received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Jackson State University. Butler is married to her wife, Neneki, and together they have a daughter, Nylah.

Rest in Power: California Black Leaders Pay Tribute to Sen. Dianne Feinstein

Antonio Ray Harvey| California Black Media

Condolences and tributes poured in from California’s Black community after the passing of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Lawmakers, business leaders, and political service organizations expressed their condolences and sympathy to family, friends, and staff of U.S. Sen. Feinstein, 90, who died of natural causes in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 28.

On Friday, in a statement, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said, “In Senator Feinstein’s honor, I am directing the flags flying at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff.”

“I am saddened by the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein, one of our nation’s

great leaders and someone I was blessed to call a colleague and friend,” added Bass. “Senator Feinstein was a trailblazer on whose shoulders I, and women in elected office all across America, will always stand. She worked harder than anyone I knew on Capitol Hill, and she will be remembered as one of the most effective and impactful Senators in American history.”

Feinstein made history as the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from California. She served over three decades in the upper chamber of the U.S. Congress and was the oldest lawmaker on Capitol Hill.

“California lost a trailblazer and a giant today,” wrote Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA-12).

“Senator Feinstein broke glass ceilings for women in politics

and fought fearlessly for safer communities free of gun violence. My deepest condolences go out to her family and loved ones.”

Feinstein built a reputation as an independent voice, working hard to find practical solutions to issues confronting California and the nation. She was the first woman to chair the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, a position she held for six years beginning in 2009.

In 2017, Sen. Feinstein became the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee –the first woman to assume that role – where she helped shape policy on criminal law, national security, immigration, civil rights and the courts. She held that position until 2021.

“We have fond memories

to cherish of the work accomplished together on behalf of our most vulnerable and underserved communities.

The Senator is truly a trailblazer,” stated Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA) founding member and state President Dezie Woods-Jones.

BWOPA’s mission is to empower and educate African American women about politics encourage involvement, and address issues affecting the African American community.

Over 50 years ago, BWOPA charter members Hon. Ella Hill Hutch and Hon. Doris Ward collaborated extensively with Feinstein on a range of social issues during her time on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and as San Fran-

cisco Mayor.

Woods-Jones recalls Sen. Feinstein hosted BWOPA’s first annual board retreat.

“May her profound legacy of supporting women's rights and leadership continue to be front and center. Thank you for your years of service Senator,” shared WoodsJones.” May her profound legacy of supporting women’s rights and leadership continue to be front and center.”

Feinstein was instrumental in helping another Black political organization grow and become a force to be reckoned with in California politics, the Black American Political Association of California (BAPAC). The group is dedicated to amplifying the economic, social, and political influence of the Black

WITH the weather changing and kids back in school, there is no better time to focus on your health. Here are five tips to fall back into a healthier routine and conquer your weight loss goals:

Eat enough protein. Protein is the key to feeling full and satisfied, especially when you’re trying to lose a few pounds. That’s why finding a high-protein plan like Nutrisystem is so important. Nutrisystem is easy to follow, and offers a variety of protein-rich meals and snacks that taste great and are made in minutes –a great choice for the busy mom or dad on the go.

With up to 30 grams of protein, Nutrisystem’s Hearty Inspirations meals will control your appetite for up to five hours. With menu items like Sesame Beef & Broccoli and Bourbon-Style Chicken, you’re going to enjoy what you’re eating and lose weight.

Get moving with fun, 15-minute workouts. As a busy parent, finding time to exercise may not be top of mind. Committing to just 15 minutes daily will do wonders for your health and help you stay on track with your weight loss goals. Look for new and exciting workouts to try, such as Pilates, dance and boxing,

so that you don’t get tired of doing the same exercises.

You can also get the family involved. Go on an evening walk together or take all the boredom out of exercise and have a dance competition!

Stock your fridge with healthy, seasonal options. Fall is the perfect time to enjoy in-season fruits and vegetables. During the cooler months, you’ll find mouth-watering produce like apples, squash, salad greens, broccoli and Brussels sprouts that will satisfy your tastebuds. If you like trying new things, consider beets. Low in calories and high in fiber, vitamin C and potassium, beets make a great vegetable to add to your grocery list.

Nutrisystem plans allow you to add a variety of fruits and vegetables to your day, and offer hundreds of recipes, including some seasonal favorites, on its lifestyle blog, The Leaf.

Plan your menu for the week. You’re busy, so opt for easy, convenient options. That’s where planning your weekly menu using healthy and simple ingredients comes in. Make sure to include variety so you don’t risk getting bored. If you find yourself saying, “I had this last week. I don’t feel

like having that again,” you may find yourself ordering takeout.

Another option is to look for a service that will deliver nutritionally-balanced, portion-controlled meals to your door. Nutrisystem offers delicious, easy to prepare options that you can be confident will not only taste good, but help you lose weight.

Prioritize yourself. Being a busy parent can be exciting, but it could also mean having difficulty prioritizing yourself. Write yourself encouraging daily reminders and hang them around your home and workplace. Set aside time to read a book before bed. Do yoga for 15 minutes in your living room to unwind. Finding something new you love –be it meditation, crafting or listening to a podcast – can motivate you to stay committed to yourself.

For more great weight loss tips, healthy recipes and more, check out https://leaf. nutrisystem.com.

Utilizing these simple tips will help you balance your busy work and home life and guide you on your successful weight loss journey. If you slip up, don’t harp on your mistake instead, forgive yourself and start again.

Intuit launches food truck program with Compton schools

Educational Program

Empowers Underserved

Youth with Vital Financial, Technical and Entrepreneurial Skills

WHO knew the food truck could serve as a high school class? Innovative minds at Intuit and Compton Unified School District devised a plan!

Intuit launched a technical and entrepreneurial educational program providing a fully operational food truck to Compton Unified School District with a wonderful outdoor luncheon at Compton High School for several hundred students, providing free lunches from multiple food trucks, as well as handing out free hats and t-shirts to the students.

The food truck program provides a curriculum to teach high school students how to run and operate a small business. The food trucks are equipped with commercial-grade kitchens, allowing students to build real-world, hands-on skills and experiences in a professional context and setting.

Compton Unified was selected for the program Compton College student Crystal Moore is one of 10 student leaders selected for a 2023-2024 Dymally Institute Fellows program in partnership with California State University, Dominguez Hills. based on Intuit’s commitment to helping underserved students in its Prosperity Hub School Districts. Presently, just 25% of high school students are mandated to enroll in personal finance courses, with lower rates

in low-income areas. This contributes to financial challenges later in life, with only 34% of Americans passing a basic financial literacy quiz, a number that continues to decline. Students who engage in

the program are expected to gain valuable financial and entrepreneurial skills that will set them up for success and support their ability to prosper in the future.

"Our commitment to strengthening communities is a fundamental part of our mission to power prosperity around the world," said Dave Zasada, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Intuit. "We launched our Prosperity Hub School Districts program to address the disparity in educational equity including access to financial and entrepreneurial education programs. As an important component of our corporate

responsibility programs, this food truck program will help students develop technical and durable skills employers seek."

The food trucks will operate as a work-based learning experience, enabling high school students to gain practical experience while learning and applying the financial and entrepreneurial skills necessary to run a business.

Compton College student picked for Dymally Fellowship

The Dymally Fellows program provides training for current and future leaders

and facilitates international travel for students of color to help expand their worldview and higher education ambitions. This year, the fellows’ academic curriculum will focus on leadership training, advocacy, social and political engagement, mental and behavioral health and wellness, and economic development. Moore and the other Fellows have or will travel to different locations in California, Howard University in Washington D.C., and South Africa for conferences and educational

opportunities. “I applied for a Dymally Fellowship in search of identity and came

out identifying as a leader,” Moore said.

Moore, a non-traditional student and mother of one, currently serves as Compton College’s Associated Student Government president (ASG) for the 2023-2024 academic year. She is pursuing a double major in nursing and psychology. In the future, she would like to work as a nurse practitioner specializing in forensics and mental health. She is on track to graduate from Compton College with associate degrees in June 2024 and would like

How Much Is Laughter Really Worth?

Dr. James L. Snyder

Of all the things I prioritize in my life, laughter is at the top of the list.

WHERE my jokes don't fly too well is with The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. I try my best to make her laugh, and occasionally, I succeed.

Our birthdays are two days apart in July. We celebrated our birthdays at one of our favorite restaurants this past year.

After finishing our dinner, they brought dessert, and then The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage looked at me and said, "Do you feel old today?"

I reached across the table, took hold of her arm, squeezed it very gently and said, "I feel old now."

You might be surprised I was the only one laughing at the table.

Getting into trouble with some joke is not that bad. I haven't gotten into too much

trouble, but once in a while, I do.

I get these scam calls, particularly concerning Medicare upgrades. I got a call the other day, and they wanted to upgrade my Medicare plan so that I had everything I deserved. Then they asked me how old I was. That switch turned on the light bulb in my head.

"I really don't know," I said as thoughtfully as possible, "every year my age changes and I just can't keep up to date with it."

There was a pause on the other end of the phone line, and finally, that person started speaking French and told me a lot about my mother. Then there came the "click."

Several weeks ago, I had a dental appointment to fix some of my teeth. I went into the office on my appointed day, signed in, and took a seat.

Shortly, the lady at the desk asked me to come forward. She showed me a file and asked, "Is this you?"

I looked at the file, looked back at her, and said, "No, that

As some members of Congress showed they were willing to bring the federal government to the brink of a shutdown, with demands that include deep cuts to services children and families rely on, once again some people have accused them of acting like children.

Yet even five-year-olds understand that quitting the game and taking the ball home if the other players won’t give you your way is wrong. Refusing to fund the federal government is far from a political game, but a real threat that harms real workers, families, and citizens across the country.

In “Our God Is Marching On!,” his speech on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol at the end of the Selma to Montgomery marches for voting

is not me."

Looking a little frustrated, she said maybe she got the wrong file. "No," I said, looking at her. Then I pointed to my chest and said, "This is me and that is just paper with my name on it."

In minutes, I was called to go in, and one of the dentist's assistants took me to the room to prepare me for the process. Finally, she finished her work, and the dentist came in. I had three teeth that needed to be worked on. I sat in that

A measure of leadership

rights, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. urged us to “march on ballot boxes until we send to our city councils, state legislatures, and the United States Congress men who will not fear to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God.” Some of the men and women in Congress right now are failing this test. This is not the leadership we or our children deserve.

How I wish some political leaders did not treat children as just another special interest group who must get in line to make their case for why their health, safety, and education needs should be met. Is this the best we have to pass on to our children and grandchildren?

Dr. King also urged us to march on ballot boxes until God’s children are able to walk the earth in decency and honor. For that to happen, as he taught us, we need a revolution in values. Fifty-five years ago, another political leader, Sen.

1968. Senator Robert F. Kennedy

a crowd at San Fernando Valley State College during his 1968 presidential primary campaign.

Robert F. Kennedy, said this to students at the University of Kansas about the need to rethink how we measure American success:

“Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the

chair for maybe an hour with my mouth open and the dentist on one side of me poking in and his assistant on the other side doing what she was supposed to do, and it was a long process.

Finally, the process was over, and the assistant asked me, "How do you feel now?"

I responded immediately, "I feel like a woman."

The assistant looked at me with wonder and said, "What?"

"I feel like a woman because my mouth has been open for such a long time."

I tried to laugh, but my mouth was so numb I could hardly talk.

Later that day, I was reminded of what the Bible says. "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones" (Proverbs 17:22).

Much of our problems can be dealt with through a merry heart. We look for artificial medicine that does not get to the heart of our problems.

mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product . . . if we should judge America by that—counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for those who break them. It counts the destruction of our redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and the cost of a nuclear warhead, and armored cars for police who fight riots in our streets. It counts Whitman’s rifle and Speck’s knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.”

Sen. Kennedy continued:

“Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our

public officials.

It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.”

At the end of that speech, Sen. Kennedy paraphrased George Bernard Shaw with words that became synonymous with his Presidential campaign and his vision for leadership: “Some people see things as they are and say, ‘why?’ I dream things that never were and say, ‘why not?’”

Sen. Kennedy’s own political leadership was cut far too short. But the dream of a nation that measures its success in the health of our children, the quality of their education, and the joy of their play is still here. So is the need for leaders who share it.

-Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis signed a multi-year extension with the team over the summer. It’s easy to see why the Lakers are banking their future on Davis.

DURING the 2022-2023 NBA regular season, Davis averaged 25.9 points and nearly 13 rebounds (12.5) rebounds a game while riding shotgun to LeBron James as the Lakers played well enough to make it to the Western Conference Finals.

“In our conversations with Anthony, his desire to lead our franchise for the next several years became abundantly clear,” Lakers general manager rob Pelinka said when the team announced the contract deal.

“AD understands that his commitment to being the hardest worker, combined with his high character, is what will help define our culture for many seasons to come. It is a proud day for Lakers Nation

when we’re able to extend the contract of one of the game’s most dominant two-way players,” Pelinka added,

With James playing his 21st season, the Lakers are primed to make another postseason run with the core of their team returning. With his contract extension secured, this puts Davis into a leadership role with the team, something he embraces.

He also downplayed the significance of the transferring of that mantle when asked directly during the team’s media day at its practice facility in El Segundo, California.

“I think it’s the Lakers

team. I play for the Lakers,” Davis said matter-of-factly.

When posed with a question if signing his contract extension had any bearing on his summer and how he goes about working in the offseason, Davis said it did not.

“They offered an extension, I accepted. That was really it, you know,” Davis said. “My workout didn’t change, you know, because of the extension or anything like that. So, they say they contacted my agent. They then contacted me. We had a meeting. That was really it.”

The Lakers’ one-two punch of Davis and James should

prove to be lethal again in the Western Conference. James averaged just 27 points and 7.5 rebounds a game last season. With guard D’Angelo Russell and overachiever Austin Reaves back, the Lakers have their solid core of four players back in the fold.

The Lakers also added nice pieces around Davis and James that should compliment their play this season. Guard Gabe Vincent and veteran forward Taurean Prince are nice additions to the team. Jarred Vanderbilt and Rui Hachimura are expected to give the Lakers valuable minutes as well.

But the key to the Lakers’ success this season hinge on Davis and his ability to stay healthy. When healthy, Davis is perhaps the premier forward/center in the NBA because all that he does on the floor. He can shoot. He can pass. He is a ferocious defender. He can rebound.

So far in his tenure with the Lakers, Los Angeles has won an NBA title and advanced to the Western Conference Finals. For many other teams in the league that would be an incredible accomplishment. For the Lakers and their fans, it’s a nice little achievement.

They want more. Like in

an 18th NBA championship. Winning titles is expected for the Lakers. Every year. However, finishing the season as runner-up in the Western Conference to another ballclub gives this Lakers team a building block. The next step would be to playing in the NBA Finals.

To get there, though, Davis must be upright and playing. His health is critical to the Lakers’ success. Last season, Davis played in 56 regular season games out of a possible 82. That is the most games that Davis played in a season since his first season with the team. During that 2019-20 season, Davis played in 62 games.

That would be the Bubble Season, the year that Davis and the Lakers won the franchise’s 17th NBA Finals trophy. In summary, if Davis is on the floor, the Lakers have an opportunity to be dominant. Playing all 82 games during the regular season is something he strives to do every year, Davis said.

“Nothing’s changed,” Davis said. “Every year I want to come out and play every game and help the team win, especially my role. I know it’s a big piece to this team, and with me being on the floor, it definitely helps us.”

The Clippers undervalued leader is Russell Westbrook

PLAYA VISTA (Compton Bulletin) - Russell Westbrook's contract is one of the biggest steals in the NBA. Electing to stay in his hometown, the former MVP will play for under $4 million this season. The two-year deal signed in July makes Westbrook one of the most undervalued players in the league.

"Money is never a driver for me. Being in a place that was welcoming with open arms and an organization that welcomed not just myself but my family, which is most important to me. This is a group of guys that I love being around," said Westbrook

at Clippers media day. "It is hard to come by a good organization that is willing to come through and give anything that you may need to be successful and be around guys who want to win and understand the value of winning, so it was kind of a no-brainer for me."

A bit of a wild card, Westbrook's aura alone will make him a leader in the Los Angeles locker room. His intensity and tenacity have made him one of the greatest point guards of all time, but he has recently faced criticism for sometimes playing out of control. He also has never been efficient from beyond the arc in a league ever more reliant on the three, contributing to the

cheaper contract.

"Russ has been a great leader since he got here, day one, minute one," said Terance Mann. "Watching him play with so much confidence no matter what anybody says about him and how strong he

is mentally is definitely something I took out of his book."

Westbrook has already cemented himself amongst NBA royalty by averaging a triple-double for a whole season four times. He will attempt to add to his legacy by winning his first ring on a team desperate for championship jewelry. His lone finals appearance came in a losing effort as a member of the Thunder in 2012.

"It would be an unbelievable attribute to add. It would be a blessing to be able to do something like that, especially being here in Los Angeles," said Westbrook. "We just have to figure out ways to make sure collectively as a group we are

taking it step by step to get to that goal."

At 34, Russ is no longer the player he was in his prime. The point guard will suffer through offensively inefficient nights, but Westbrook can still be an incredibly impactful player on a talented Clippers team.

"I'm still as fast as anybody, can jump as high as anybody, can play at an elite level, and I still see myself as an elite basketball player in this league. I can do pretty much anything (offensively), and I can guard the best (defensively)," said Westbrook.

His teammates lauded his work ethic and repeatedly stressed the importance

“This is not about your rights as a parent. There is no such thing as a parental right,” said Nicolette Vochelle from Southern California and a member of BLEXIT, a conservative community organization co-founded by Candace Owens. Vochelle was one of the speakers that participated in the rally. “This is about our decisions as parents to raise our children as best as we possibly can and to choose the village and environment that they are raised in,” said Vochelle, expressing her opposition to AB 1078 and AB 5.

AB 5, which Newsom signed into law on Sept. 23, requires the State Department of Education to finalize the development of an online training delivery platform and an online training curriculum to advance LGBTQ “cultural competency” training for teachers.

According to BLEXIT’s website, the organization promotes economic independence, individual freedom, strengthening the nuclear family, and fostering a deeper appreciation for patriotism in Black American culture.

Vochelle told California Black Media that “Gov, Newsom, (Attorney General) Rob Bonta, and (Superintendent of Public Instruction) Tony Thurmond have zero rights to our children and it is beyond time that we remind them of that fact. We don’t give them another inch or second of our time to strip our children’s innocence. They will not be victims and they will not be confused. They will be protected.”

Jackson disagrees with Vochelle and other opponents of the legislation.

The lawmaker, who is openly gay, said AB 1078 will keep the path open to understanding, trust, equality, and knowledge in the classrooms. He believes that the bill will build a strong bond between schools and parents.

“California is the true freedom state: a place where families -- not political fanatics -- have the freedom to decide what’s right for them. With the passage of this legislation that bans book bans and ensures all students have textbooks, our state’s Family Agenda is now even stronger. All students deserve the freedom to read and learn about the truth, the world, and themselves,” Newsom said after the Legislature approved AB 1078.

who has dedicated herself to advancing the rights of women and workers. For more than a decade, I have had the privilege of working with her and I know that, during her tenure, she will be a strong voice who will bring a valuable and needed perspective to our nation’s most important policy matters,” Bradford said.

"I appreciate Governor Newsom for keeping his pledge to appoint a Black woman to this important seat, however, I am disappointed that Representative Barbara Lee was not selected. During her decades of elected service in Congress, Barbara Lee has been a leader who is simply unmatched in her values, vision and lived experiences."

over three hundred affiliated union and labor organizations representing more than 800,000 members, I am excited to announce that the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor has endorsed Michelle Chambers for State Senate. Michelle proved her support for workers as an elected official, and as a former union member she understands the issues facing California. We look forward to partnering with her in Sacramento.”

Chambers responded to the endorsement saying, “As a former AFSCME member, and elected official who collaborated closely with our public employees, I am overwhelmed with joy to be supported by the LA Federation of Labor. I have spent the better part of this year demonstrating with striking hotel workers, SEIU, SAG/ AFTRA and other fighting to fair wages and safety in the workplace. When I

get to the Capitol, labor can count on me to partner with them at the decision-making table.”

Chambers hails from a union family where public service was the ethos. She was a former member of AFSCME 2545, her husband, Todd, is a current member of the Association of State Supervisors and former member of AFSCME, her sister is a member of the Nurses Union, and her father retired after 40 years of service as a member of the Pipefitters Union.

Chambers was overwhelming elected to serve Compton City Council, District 1 with 65% of the votes casted on June 4, 2019. While serving on the City Council, Michelle approved contracts of over twenty-two million, including over ten street repair projects (the most during one term in history in the City of Compton), street reconstruction, city light-

ing projects, illegal dumping removal, graffiti abatement and affordable housing developments, just to name a few.

Dedicated to improving the employment rate within the City of Compton, Chambers describes herself as a moving force to ensure contractors hired residents with livable wages, including those returning from correctional facilities.

Assuring representation for the City of Compton, Michelle served on the following Boards and Commissions: The Public Safety Task Force Commission (CA Contract Cities), the Los Angeles County Sanitation Board, Sex Trafficking Task Force, Gateway Cities Council of Governments, Los Angeles County Transportation Committee, League of California Cities, Southern California Association of Governments.

community in California.

According to BAPAC Sacramento Regional Director Rory Kaufman, BAPAC’s growth and influence were bolstered by the support of former Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, former two-time Gov. Jerry Brown, and Feinstein. The organization was founded by Percy Pinkney, an outspoken champion for solutions to challenges facing Black Californians, who also served as a senior state field representative for Feinstein.

“The bottom line is that Dianne Feinstein helped keep BAPAC alive because she had Percy Pinkney on her staff,” Kaufman said. “If history serves me correctly, it was either

of what Russ brings in terms of the mental side of the game.

"His approach, personality, and competitive drive really rubbed off on the team from day one when he stepped into the facility," said Norman Powell. "He is a guy that is gonna say what is on his mind and hold everybody accountable and hold everybody up."

Paul George had his best season as a pro playing alongside Westbrook in Oklahoma City. The star forward pushed the organization to roll the

Brown or Feinstein that sent Pinkney to Indiana where he discovered an organization similar to BAPAC and brought it back here (to the West Coast) to start the organization.”

The California Black Women’s Collective (CBWC) also issued a statement on the passing of Feinstein. CBWC serves as a resource for lawmakers, elected officials, business leaders, and advocacy organizations.

“We are all saddened by the passing of Senator Diane Feinstein, who paved the way for women to serve their communities in California and nationally,” states Kellie Todd Griffin, founding convener of CBWC. “It is imperative that we all take a mo-

ment to honor her contributions that positioned California as a beacon for others to follow.”

Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Inglewood), vice chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) ,called Feinstein an “icon for her service and leadership.”

“Senator Dianne Feinstein dedicated her life to public service. As the longest-serving woman in the U.S. Senate, she was a trailblazer who served our state with strength, vision, and compassion,” said Bradford. “Her career was forged through the tragedy of gun violence which fueled her unwavering resolve to pass groundbreaking gun control. A true giant has left us.”

dice on the future Hall of Famer after he was bought out of his contract last year.

"Talk about somebody you know on a nightly basis that you're gonna get his full 100 percent effort if not 120, 130 percent. It was nice knowing that, especially on the dog days when you are just not feeling it, you might be under the weather, you might be tired, achy, whatever it is, those excuses would not creep in because the energy he brought on a nightly basis was contagious," said

George. "With his energy, communication, and leadership, he has a ton of value to the organization."

The Clippers are a deep team with a plethora of scoring options and have been title contenders ever since acquiring George and Kawhi Leonard in 2019. Injuries have played a significant role in the past season's demise, but the goal is again the first championship in team history. Westbrook's energy and leadership for a full season could help change the franchise's fortunes.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS:

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the Property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the Property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the Property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this Property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the Property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy

to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this Property, you may call 1.866.684.2727 or visit this Internet Website www.servicelinkasap. com, using the file number assigned to this case 23-00183-2FNT. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The real Property heretofore described is being sold "as is". The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real Property described above is purported to be: 3220 W. 85th St., Inglewood, CA The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The Kevin Hart Kollection comes to the LA Auto Show

The Los Angeles Auto Show will host the first public appearance of the Kevin Hart Kollection. Open to the public from Nov. 17-26, show visitors will be able to view 11 of Hart's personal favorites, all of which were custom-built to his specifications.

AN entire showcase hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center will be devoted to the Kollection, allowing attendees to be immersed in Kevin Hart's world. This will be the first time the comedian, actor and entrepreneur has invited the public to see his private ensemble of cars, which he has been building for more than a decade.

As a hardcore car enthusiast and huge fan of American muscle cars, the Kevin Hart Kollection will allow fans to see a number of cars Kevin is revealing in public for the first time.

Among them will be the 1970 Dodge Challenger Bane, which will come to Los Angeles for its public reveal after being shown at the 2023 SEMA automotive industry trade show. It will be the latest addition to Kevin's growing collection of vehicles, many of which he themes to create unique personalities.

"I'm pumped for people to see my cars in person," Kevin Hart said. "Some have been at the big hot rod shows, but this is the first time they'll all be together. And to do it at a major international event like the LA Auto Show was the ideal place to make it happen. I can't wait for fans to see them and find out which one is their favorite."

The majority of cars in the Kevin Hart Kollection have horror movie themes – Kevin's favorite genre. Each has been created by North America's top muscle car designers and builders. The 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner Michael Myers,

for example, was designed by Sean Smith and built by Salvaggio Design. It features a 940hp supercharged Hemi V8 and sixspeed manual transmission.

Painted sinister black, a Halloween orange theme appears on the hub cap-style wheels,

custom tires, billet door mirrors, Whipple supercharger and accents throughout the custom interior.

The latter features special leather imported from Italy with orange "blood splatter" effect. There's also a knife handle for the gear shift, and

a masked Road Runner emblem adds a cartoon element.

To give a sense of its stature, the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association declared Kevin's Plymouth its 2022 Muscle Machine of the Year.

Kevin's passion doesn't stop at American muscle. The

Kevin Hart Kollection will also feature two of the star's coveted Ferraris. These include a 2022 Ferrari SF90 Spyder and 2023 Ferrari 812 Competizione. Both of these supercars were specified by Kevin and include custom touches such as silver racing stripes over the black paintwork as well as carbon fiber wheels on the 812. Both cars add an exciting addition to the 2023 LA Auto Show and fans of the Prancing Horse emblem.

Additional Kevin Hart announcements are planned leading up to the LA Auto Show on November 17-26, as well as more entertainment and cultural exhibits and activations taking place across the show's one million square-feet of automotive experiences.

The intersection of lifestyle and the latest offerings from top manufacturers will create a diverse, festival-like environment where enthusiasts, families, car shoppers and the entire LA community come together to celebrate the city's world-famous car culture.
