Judge grants woman’s request for restraining order against community activist Najee Ali

On Thursday, May 4, a woman was granted a one-year restraining order against community activist Najee Ali.

THE restraining order, issued by Commissioner Laura Cohen and served Thursday on Ali, who was in court, came after the woman requested the order on Mar. 3 in an attempt to stop Ali from harassing, threatening, and bullying her and her boyfriend after she broke off their four-year extramarital affair in January.

Ali has been married for seven years to Dr. Felicia Banks-Ali.

In court filings, the petitioner (victim) said, “Mr. Ali became very agitated and aggressive after I ended the relationship and sent me a series of threatening messages, including sexually explicit pictures and a video of myself, which were taken without my knowledge or consent.”

In court, Ali admitted to taking the photos and claimed they were a gag because the woman snored.

She continued, “In two of the photos, I am sleep. I have never seen these pictures or video before. Additionally, Mr. Ali texted that I am a whore, he hoped I would die, and that my parents would be ashamed. He also began calling and texting my boyfriend incessantly. Moreover, he sent my boyfriend the above-referenced pictures and videos. He, again, attempted to provoke my boyfriend into a physical altercation.”

The hearing in downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles Superior Court’s Dept. 94 took just about half an hour and was conducted in front of a full courtroom of witnesses.

To support her claim of

harassment and bullying, the victim provided numerous sexually explicit and threatening text messages from Ali that were read aloud in court by the judge.

Ali admitted to sending the text messages.

“Everything she sent you, Your Honor, I did send,” admitted Ali.

“So, for example, this one,”

Commissioner Cohen responded. “It looks like it was sent around 1:11. ‘Don’t come near you. You didn’t say that last week when you picked me up from Simply Wholesome and sucked my c---- in the back of your truck. I knew you was a h--. And you kept f----- me and kept telling me you didn’t have a boyfriend and he was moving out.’”

Ali responded, “Ahhh, yeah--because--ahh, I did say that. But you gotta keep context, Your Honor, that you know she lied about the boyfriend.”

Ali has been married for seven years.

In court documents, Ali’s victim told the court that, “Mr. Ali baseline nature is hostility

and aggression. He is too easily provoked. He can be calm and then becomes enraged in seconds. During our first sexual encounter, he choked me so hard, I could not breathe.”

Commissioner Cohen asked Ali, “Did you put your hands around her neck during your sexual encounters?”

“Ah, yes, I did. I’m not going to sit up here and lie, but it was something that she enjoyed,” Ali replied to the judge.

The woman testified in court that the first time he did that to her, she became extremely fearful of him.

Najee Ali pointed out to the judge that the Nation of Islam’s security team was in court with his victim and that a “blogger” had written an article about him he called "hit pieces."

Ali showed the judge a printed copy of an article he said was entitled, “Sexually explicit text messages detail blackmail attempt by activist Najee Ali.”

Ali held up his book and explained to the judge how a Congressmember had written

stop her from talking to this journalist. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told Ali to go back into the courtroom.

Ali’s wife asked for help, and once he was back in the courtroom said she wanted to leave before he came out because she was fearful he might hurt her in the parking lot.

Ali has had a number of requests for restraining orders filed against him dating back as far as 1988.

In 2006, Congresswoman Maxine Waters was granted a restraining order against Ali.

She told the Los Angeles Times that he had confronted her on several occasions, and she believed he was attempting to set her up. The restraining order also stated that Ali threatened to get her someday.

the forward to his book and how he was the one who got up at 2 o’clock in the morning to hold the hands of families and pointed to his work with the family of 19-year-old Jazmin Green who was shot and killed in South Los Angeles on Apr. 24.

Commissioner Cohen asked Ali how any of that related to his victim.

Prior to making her ruling, Commissioner Cohen said that she believed that the victim did not consent to the way Ali had sex with her and that Ali himself acknowledged sending the text messages. She found that Ali was abusive and that the victim had met her burden of proof to get a restraining order.

For one year, Ali has been ordered to stay 100 yards away from the victim, her home, her workplace, and her vehicle. He is not to contact the victim in any way or to have anyone contact her for him.

After the hearing was over, Ali saw that his wife, Dr. Felicia Banks-Ali, was in court and chased her out of the courtroom and attempted to

In court files, she said Ali is “attempting to create a situation that will appear to be harassment in order to sue me. He will stalk me. I’m very public.”

Before she passed away, Laura Hendricks, a merchant in Leimert Park, had to get two restraining orders against Ali for intimidation and harassment.

And even though Ali testified Thursday under oath that he was not threatening or violent, in 2016, during a meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission, Ali publicly threatened physical harm to Black Lives Matter leaders Dr. Melina Abdullah and Jasmine Abdullah (not related).

In a video of the incident, Ali can be seen calling Jasmine Abdullah a felon, referencing her 2017 conviction for attempted “lynching” which was later reduced to a misdemeanor.

Ali has been convicted of two felonies.

Ali also went to Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullor’s house forcing her to take her child and flee for fear

Optimism Prevails Among Minority Business Owners, Survey Shows

(StatePoint) Even as minority business owners face new economic challenges, including supply chain disruptions and inflation, results from PNC’s recent Economic Outlook survey show an impressive resiliency and positive mindset among these business leaders, according to Marshalyn Odneal, national sales executive for Minority Business at PNC Bank.

ACCORDING to PNC’s survey, more than twothirds (68%) of minority business owners feel highly optimistic about the prospects of their own company in the next six months, compared to just 60% of non-minority-owned businesses.

While business owners as

a whole remain cautious about the national economy, the gap between optimism among minority business owners for their own company versus the broader U.S. economy is 40 percentage points, significantly higher than the 31-point difference among non-minority owners.

“I have no doubt that minority business owners who were able to manage through the pandemic had to make unprecedented decisions related to staffing, business models and pricing. In doing so, they faced a Goliath – and won. It’s unsurprising that their mindset about the future of their businesses, despite current economic challenges, is optimistic,” Odneal said.

According to PNC’s survey, 65% of Black- and Hispanic-owned business owners stated they have a business plan suited to the current direction of the economy, significantly more than non-minority owned businesses (55%).

services and technology programs, among other benefits, according to the National Minority Supplier Development Council.

“Our survey revealed that 87% of Black-owned businesses are now MBE-certified, up from 69% last year. Three-quarters of Hispanic-owned business are MBE-certified, compared to 67% last year. Of MBE-certified businesses, 80% of Black- and 84% of Hispanic-owned businesses said that certification has been a helpful business development tool,” Odneal said.

“The truth is that the unique financial challenges minority-owned businesses have long faced were amplified during the pandemic. As a result, more minority business owners are now seeking Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification, which is also an important and needed resource,” Odneal said.

Businesses that become MBE-certified gain exclusive access to premium networking events, affordable consulting

PNC has taken significant steps in doing more for minority-owned businesses and providing necessary resources to help them overcome roadblocks.

As a part of its Small Business organization, PNC’s Minority Business Development Group’s mission is to deliver solutions and resources that foster financial wellness for

This highlights the importance of access to crucial resources for these business owners. The survey reinforces this point, showing that 86% of Blackand Hispanic-owned businesses interacted with or leveraged resources from the Small Business Association (SBA), a local chamber of commerce or a community economic development organization. Only 69% of non-minority business owners reported doing the same. n Survey Shows, see page 4

of their lives.

Convicted of multiple felonies, Najee Ali’s most recent stint in prison came after he was found guilty in 2008 of trying to tamper with a witness outside of his daughter’s preliminary hearing.

For that, he received four years. Jasmin Eskew, Najee’s daughter, was awaiting trial on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of leaving the scene of an accident stemming from an incident in July 2007 involving her vehicle and a group of motorcyclists on the San Bernardino Freeway.

As the Los Angeles Times reported back then, “Ali would have received two years in prison, but a prior robbery conviction in 1992 doubled his time to four years, Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said. The judge also found that Ali had violated his probation in a 2004 case in which he was convicted of felony

hit-and-run after leaving the scene of an accident while he was on bail for another charge of purchasing false documents to be able to get two driver’s licenses from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Ali has been arrested for rape three times. He told the judge that his full background was well documented in his book “self-published autobiography “Raising Hell — A Life of Activism,” and that the victim knew all about his past. A search of the book online using a Kindle produced 10 mentions of the word rape, none in reference to his three arrests for it.

During Thursday’s court hearing, Ali also told the judge that his pardon was on Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Black women experience violence at a rate 2.5 times more than white women. Study shows domestic violence impacts Black women at higher rates than any other race or ethnicity.

Black women also experience significantly higher rates of psychological abuse — including humiliation, insults, name-calling, and coercive control — than do women overall.

Sexual violence affects Black women at high rates. More than 20 percent of Black women are raped during their lifetimes — a higher share than among women overall.

Black women face a particularly high risk of being killed at the hands of a man. A 2015 Violence Policy Center study finds that Black women were two and a half times more likely to be murdered by men than their White counterparts. More than nine in ten Black female victims knew their killers.

small businesses within diverse communities. They’ve been able to do this, in part, through the PNC-Certified Minority Business Advocate initiative, a voluntary advocacy program that helps PNC employees understand the challenges facing minority-owned business owners.

“If the optimism of these entrepreneurs is realized and the U.S. business landscape prospers further down the road, minority business supporters must continue to execute against their mission and accelerate their efforts. The outlook is bright, but we must continue to do our part to advocate for these entrepreneurs and help their communities thrive,” Odneal said.

LAUSD educators ratify agreement

LOS ANGELES, CA

By an overwhelming margin of 94.13 percent, UTLA members — who include approximately 35,000 teachers, counselors, nurses, librarians and other members of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) – ratified a three-year tentative agreement on Friday, May 5.

AN estimated 27,171 total ballots were cast. Following eleven months of intense negotiations, UTLA’s bargaining team inked a temporary agreement with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. Voting was held in-person and online from May 2-4.

The 2022-2025 agreement includes a 21% salary increase for all UTLA members over three years; an overall class size reduction by two students in ev-

ery grade at every school; more college counselors, academic counselors, pupil services and attendance counselors, psychiatric social workers, and school psychologists; and enforceable class size caps for special education. “Families of Special Education students often look to the public school system to give their children the care and education they need, but Special Education has been on the backburner of receiving the support we desperately need,” said Deborah Schneider Solis, Special Education teacher at Arminta Elementary. “This agreement not only increases wages to address the educator shortage, but also enforces class caps for Special Education classes as well as additional support staffing. These improvements will help our most vulnerable students receive a good education that accommodates their needs.”

By participating in site pickets, boycotts, a 60,000-member joint rally and solidarity strike with SEIU 99, LAUSD employees spread the message about

the tough challenges educators are experiencing experienced in the face of an unprecedented teacher shortage and record-high inflation.

“This agreement demonstrates that when we stand together, we can transform our schools for the better. It acknowledges the impact of the pandemic, years of disinvestment and economic hardship, while standing firm on things school faculty need to provide quality education to our students,” said Cecily Myart-Cruz, president of United Teachers Los Angeles. “Our efforts to mobilize members, parents and community supporters were vital to our success. This contract will set the national standard for

all other educators to achieve liveable wages and solidify an equitable future where students are supported in a healthy learning environment.” UTLA’s contract demands were developed by members, parents, and community allies over months of meetings and dialogue to address the urgent needs of LAUSD students. In addition to implementing the biggest salary increase in 34 years, LAUSD has agreed to put in contract language that addresses community needs such as increased support for the Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP), housing and immigrant support, and the creation of greenspaces, including outdoor education spaces and programs.

Highlights of the agreement include:

• A 21% salary increase for all UTLA members

• Added staffing for student support – Social Workers, School Psychologists, Counselors, and more

• Competitive salaries to hire School Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, School Psychologists, Social Workers, Speech and Language Pathologists, Special Educators, Early Childhood Educators, Teachers, and more to fill vacant positions

• Joint work to identify unused LAUSD property to convert to housing, school-based supports, and advocate for Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers for unhoused students and their families, affordable housing, and tenant protections.

• Partnerships to provide legal and financial support for immigrant students and their families, plus steps for expanding services

• First ever enforceable Special Education caseload caps and reductions

Remembering the Children’s Crusade

Daddy,” the boy said, “I don’t want to disobey you, but I have made my pledge. If you try to keep me home, I will sneak off. If you think I deserve to be punished for that, I’ll just have to take the punishment. For, you see, I’m not doing this only because I want to be free. I’m doing it also because I want freedom for you and Mama, and I want it to come before you die.”

THIS teenage boy overheard talking to his father by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of hundreds of children and youths in Birmingham, Alabama who decided sixty years ago this week that they were determined to do whatever it took to stand up for freedom for their parents, elders, and themselves.

They were assaulted by fire hoses and police dogs, went to jail by the hundreds, and finally broke the back of Jim Crow in the city known as “Bombingham.” On this 60th anniversary of the Birmingham Children’s Crusade it is again time to remember, honor, and follow the example of the children who were frontline soldiers and transforming catalysts in the movement for civil rights and equal justice.

The Children’s Crusade happened at a critical time in the civil rights struggle in Birmingham. In April 1963 the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), together with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and its fearless leader Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, had started a desegregation campaign in the city.

There were mass meetings, lunch counter sit-ins, nonviolent marches, and boycotts of Birmingham’s segregated

stores during the busy Easter shopping season. Dr. King was one of several hundred people arrested in the first weeks of the campaign when he was jailed for violating an anti-protest injunction on Good Friday, April 12, and four days later wrote his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” But as the days went on with little response from city leaders, a new tactic was raised: including more children and youths.

Young people didn’t face some of the risks adults might, including losing breadwinning jobs, and college students had already proven to be extremely effective activists in cities across the South. But once it became clear that many of the children volunteering for meetings and training sessions in Birmingham were high school students or even younger, concerns were raised about whether allowing them to protest was too dangerous.

Dr. King later described the decision this way: “Even though we realized that involving teenagers and high school students would bring down upon us a heavy fire of criticism, we felt that we needed this dramatic new dimension. Our people were demonstrating daily and going to jail in numbers, but we were still beating our heads against the brick wall of the city officials’ stubborn resolve to maintain the status quo. Our fight, if won, would benefit

people of all ages.

But most of all we were inspired with a desire to give to our young a true sense of their own stake in freedom and justice. We believed they would have the courage to respond to our call.” Their response, he said, “exceeded our fondest dreams.”

For the children May 2 was “D-Day.” Black disc jockeys were key allies in encouraging and deploying their listeners, and class presidents, star athletes, and prom queens from local schools led the way as hundreds of children skipped class, gathered at the 16th Street Baptist Church, and marched into downtown Birmingham in groups of fifty, organized into lines two by two and singing freedom songs.

More than a thousand students marched the first day, and hundreds were arrested. Segregationist police commissioner Bull Connor’s overwhelmed force started using school buses to take the children to jail. But that first wave of children was only the beginning.

When hundreds more returned the next day, Bull Connor directed the police and fire department to begin using force on the child marchers. The decision surprised even those used to his meanness and brutality, but it was not enough to stop the marchers.

The searing heartbreaking pictures of children being battered

by powerful fire hoses and attacked by police dogs appeared on front pages around the country and world and helped turned the tide of public opinion in support of the fight for justice.

Marches and protests continued in Birmingham with children leading the way. As more were arrested and attacked others kept coming to take their place, leaving jails so overflowing some child prisoners were held at the city’s fairground and in an openair stockade where they were pelted by rain. On May 8 a temporary truce was called, and on May 10 an agreement was reached that released the jailed children and others on bond and paved the way for desegregation of Birmingham’s public facilities.

Hateful segregationists in the city did not give in quietly. Within hours, the Gaston Motel where Dr. King and other SCLC leaders stayed and Dr. King’s brother Reverend A.D. King’s home were firebombed. Four months later, a bomb was placed under the steps of the 16th Street Baptist Church with a timer deliberately set to go off Sunday morning. The bomb exploded as children were in the church’s basement preparing to lead Youth Sunday services, and fourteenyear-olds Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley and 11-year-old

Denise McNair were killed, with more than 20 others injured.

Months later, when an interviewer asked Dr. King how he felt after that bombing, he first described his despair at thinking if men could be that bestial maybe there really was no hope. But, he said, time eventually “buoyed me with the inspiration of another moment which I shall never forget: when I saw with my own eyes over three thousand young Negro boys and girls, totally unarmed, leave Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church to march to a prayer meeting—ready to pit nothing but the power of their bodies and souls against Bull Connor’s police dogs, clubs, and fire hoses.” He added: “I never will forget a moment in Birmingham when a white policeman accosted a little Negro girl, seven or eight years old, who was walking in a demonstration with her mother. ‘What do you want?’ the policeman asked her gruffly, and the little girl looked him straight in the eye and answered, ‘Fee-dom.’ She couldn’t even pronounce it, but she knew. It was beautiful! Many times when I have been in sorely trying situations, the memory of that little one has come into my mind, and has buoyed me.”

The same example that buoyed Dr. King should still inspire us today.

Lakers take commanding lead over Warriors

-

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Golden State Warriors 104-101 in Game 4 in the second round of the best-of-seven series. Game 4 turned out to be a marathon rather than a sprint for LA. The Lakers heated up and took over the game in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter.

WITH the win, the Lakers now have a 3-1 lead in the series against the Warriors. Golden Staten ow has to win the last three games of the series to try to continue to repeat as NBA champs. The star of the game for the Lakers was Lonnie Walker IV.

Walker came through at the end of the game and made one clutch shot after another to help the Lakers take control of the game. Walker scored 15 huge points, grabbed three rebounds and added two assists in the 27 minutes he was on the court.

Walker is the first Lakers bench player to score over 15 points in the fourth quarter of a playoff game since Kobe

Bryant did it. In a postgame interview, Lakers head coach Darvin Ham commented on Walker’s scoring outburst down the stretch.

“Lonnie came in and played well,” Ham said. “He fell out of rotation...but remained a trooper, professional, high spirited. When your heart and mind is in a good place, the body follows...kudos to him.”

During a postgame press

conference, Walker talked about carrying the offensive load in the fourth period for the Lakers.

“I got a lot of confidence in myself; I know my value,” Walkers said. “I know what I’m capable of doing by the grace of God and a lot of hard work and sacrifices and time.”

Los Angeles had a slower start in this game compared to the earlier games of the series.

The energy and enthusiasm coming from the Lakers did not reach optimum level until after the second half of the game. Both teams appeared to be flat and seemed off their game and tired during the first quarter.

There were countless missed baskets and rebounds that should have been grabbed. In the third quarter, Crypto. com Arena came to life. LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves all started to show more energy as Los Angeles took the lead, 59-57.

The boost of energy for the Lakers lasted until the end of the period with back-to-back clutch plays from James and Dennis Schröder helped Los Angeles gain confidence. The Lakers were no longer in the lead, but Golden State did not increase the gap by much.

Golden State star Stephen Curry seemed to give everything he had for the Warriors, coming through with a triple-double. Curry finished the night with 31 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. The other half of the Warriors’ dynamic duo, Klay

Thompson, had another off night, tallying just 9 points.

The Lakers took advantage of Thompson’s bad outing, especially in the final period. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Warriors had built an 84-77 lead. Walker, James, and Davis worked together to tie the game within the first few minutes.

After a turnover from the Warriors, Walker sprinted down the court for a layup with no one able to guard him. James made an impressive block and the Lakers’ aggression heated up. For the second time in the fourth quarter, the game was tied again with seven minutes to spare.

The game was an emotional roller coaster for both teams with a dramatic end. Ham addressed how the Lakers pulled off a third win against the defending champs.

Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether you sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916) 939-0772 or visit this internet website address www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case (TS# 3800-2). Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an "eligible bidder," you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916) 939-0772, or visit this internet website address www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case (TS# 3800-2) to find the date on which the trustee's sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee's sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an "eligible tenant buyer" or "eligible bidder," you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Review: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ lives up to the hype

The Guardians of the Galaxy were the goofballs of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before “everyone” wanted to be the goofballs of the MCU. The first film from 2014 pulled off the unlikely feat of introducing five new, disparate, uniquely funny heroes and making fans care about all of them.

THE original lineup was human Peter “Star-Lord” Quill (Chris Pratt), the anthropomorphic Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), living tree Groot (Vin Diesel), green assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), and blue powerhouse Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). Since then, the team has taken on Quill’s half-sister Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Gamora’s adoptive sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), displaced pirate Kraglin (Sean Gunn), and even Sovi -

et space dog Cosmo (Maria Bakalova).

They also lost Gamora at the hands of her own adoptive father Thanos, but a past version of the character traveled through time, so she’s still around, but doesn’t remember being part of the team, nor does she want to be.

The new adventure kicks off when Rocket is attacked by Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), the newly-created “son” of the vindictive High

Priestess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) of the Sovereign race, who wants revenge on Rocket for stealing from her back in “Vol. 2.” And Adam just goes right on the attack, driving the small target through a wall at first sight. It’s a nice change of pace from recent MCU outings where the villain tries to introduce themselves dramatically and the hero makes fun of them (looking at you, M.O.D.A.K.). Rocket can’t be healed without information

about his artificial biology, so Star-Lord leads a mission to his furry friend’s planet of origin to steal his records.

Gamora, now a space pirate, comes along, but only because she’s promised a fee. Star-Lord knows the mission is about helping Rocket, but he can’t help but get distracted by the possibility that spending time with Gamora will make her fall in love with him again. She’s not receptive to the idea.

Rocket, meanwhile, is forced to confront his traumatic past through a series of coma dreams. He started off as a normal, non-talking raccoon, but was given a series of painful technological upgrades by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) as part of an effort to create a sort of master race. He was best friends with his fellow tortured test subjects, otter Lylla (Linda Cardellini), walrus Teefs (Asim Chaudhry), and rabbit Floor (Michaela Hoover).

The team made a pact to stay together, and we haven’t seen these other characters before, so… don’t get too attached to them in these flashbacks. Ah, but how can you not? That High Evolutionary is as sick and cruel as he is megalomaniacal. He’s the kind of heel I want to see kept alive in the MCU just so he can be punished more down the line.

The Rocket scenes and later ones with the High Evolutionary’s exploits are true

tear-jerkers, but the tone, as always, is mostly humorous. I got some good laughs out of Mantis expressing shock at how long humans live, StarLord failing to sweet-talk a receptionist, and Drax negotiating the number of people he can kill on the mission. It all adds up to a highly entertaining first two-thirds. Then I started feeling the length of the movie: the jokes got less funny, the characters and their individual storylines got too crowded and confusing, and the movie certainly wasn’t retaining its appeal with its visually-mushy, commonplace-for-MCU action scenes.

After a string of disappointments, the MCU has given us a decent outing with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” but I’m still waiting for that special movie that reminds me of why it’s the biggest franchise in the (known) galaxy.

Grade: B“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, strong language (including the MCU’s first unbleeped F-bomb, which I think is wasted here), suggestive/drug references and thematic elements. Its running time is 150 minutes.
