Play Equity Fund allocated state funds for upgrade to LA County parks

The Play Equity Fund has been allocated $1 million in the state budget to assess park, recreation and open space improvements in the future on County of Los Angeles-owned land adjacent to the Yvonne Brathwaite Burke Sports Complex in the Windsor Hills community.

This budget allocation to the Play Equity Fund was made possible through the leadership of State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas. This public investment will allow the County to assess the site’s viability for future use and determine the possibilities with the property.

“Because of historic impacts from inequitable investments and racialized land-use orders, about three quarters of communities of color in Los Angeles are considered park poor,” said Senator Smallwood-Cuevas. “Access to green space is not just a matter a having a

place of recreation. It’s a matter of environmental equity and justice.”

Senator Smallwood-Cuevas attended a ceremony recently that celebrated securing the funding to assess the site. She was joined by LA County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell and Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation Norma Edith García-Gonzalez.

“This $1 million investment represents a shared County and State commitment to deliver the benefits of parks and open space to LA County’s highly urbanized communities of color that, to this day, still face a significant level of exposure to environmental hazards and health vulnerabilities, said Supervisor Mitchell. “As we look ahead towards the major sporting events in our region, I look forward to continuing to work with public and private partners to advance

park and play equity across LA County.”

Leaders from the Play Equity Fund, as well as several students from ICEF View Park High School also attended the celebratory event at the property off Fairfax Ave. in recognition of the opportunity presented by this new public investment.

“As we celebrate this critical first step, we are grateful to Senator Smallwood-Cuevas for her leadership in Sacramento and for her vision of all communities having access to healthy, equitable recreation spaces,” said Renata Simril, president of the Play Equity Fund. “Partnerships will be crucial in moving this project forward. The Play Equity Fund is thankful to Supervisor Mitchell for her continued leadership in advancing equity in all its forms and for being a champion for all of us.”

New California campaign aims to improve Alzheimer’s Disease care, prevention and detection

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) launched the Take on Alzheimer’s campaign in late February.

THE awareness campaign is aimed toward educating all Californians about brain health, the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, and ways to improve communication between patients’ loved ones and health care providers.

Over the next 20 years, the impact of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dimensions (AD/ ADRDs) on the State of California will increase dramatically, according to the CDPH. Longer life expectancies and the aging of the baby boomer generation will lead to an increase in the number and percentage of Californians who will be 65 years of age and older. Since the primary risk factor for AD/ADRDs is older age, a significant increase is anticipated in the numbers of people who will be living with the disease.

“It’s critical to build dementia expertise into programs and services supporting our state’s increasingly diverse older adult population, including family caregivers and our workforce,” said Susan DeMarois, Director of the California Department of Aging in a press release.

“Widespread prevention, screening and detection will enable more families to make important social, medical, financial, and personal decisions and we want our aging network to be well equipped to meet their needs.”

In 2019, approximately 660,000 Californians over 65 years of age lived with AD/ ADRDs, which accounted for roughly 11% of the disease’s prevalence across the United States (5.8 million people).

Between 2019 and 2040 a doubling in the number of Californians living with AD/ ADRDs is expected. This increase will affect all regions of the state across various demographic groups.

Women are especially impacted by the disease, making up nearly two-thirds of diagnosed Americans. Other groups disproportionately impacted include older Black Americans, who are twice as likely to develop the disease.

In the next 20 years, the number of people living with AD/

ADRDs is projected to triple, growing to 91,071 people. Latinos are one-and-a-half times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than White older adults.

Additional CDPH estimates indicate that between 2019 and 2040:

California’s population will grow by 16%, while the population of people living with AD/ADRDs will expand by 127%;

• The number of Californians over 75 years of age living with AD/ADRDs will more than double, growing to over 1.3 million.

• The number of Californians between 55 and 74 years of age living with AD/ADRDs will increase 26%, growing to 194,975 people.

• The number of people living with AD/ADRDs in California’s fifteen most populous counties (those with a population of 700,000 or more) will at least double.

• The number of Californians living with AD/ADRDs will increase by 11% for women, growing to 917,482 people; and increase by 8% for men, growing to 609,197 people.

• The number of people living with AD/ADRDs more than double for Californians who identify as Asian American/Pacific Islander, growing to 241,106 people.

The Take on Alzheimer’s Campaign aims to reach these disproportionally impacted communities through multilingual and multicultural advertising, partnerships with

community-based organizations and engaging trusted ethnic media journalists. The campaign also plans to educate these communities about brain health, the signs of aging, and ADRD symptoms to make a positive impact on them and their loved ones by promoting brain health and benefiting from early detection and diagnosis.

“This campaign will empower our diverse communities to support brain health, better understand and the difference between signs of aging and symptoms of dementia and encourage individuals to have important conversations with their loved ones and health care providers,” said

CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer, Dr. Tomás J. Aragón in a release.

The campaign also believes starting honest and empathetic conversations with friends, loved ones or a healthcare provider can be critical to improving outcomes and combating fear and stigma associated with AD/ADRDs.

Based on population-level evidence, the sex health conditions and behaviors that increase risk for cognitive decline and AD are midlife hypertension (age 45-64), physical inactivity, midlife obesity (age 45-64), diabetes, smoking (age 45 and older) and poor sleep (less than six hours a night).

Visit TakeonALZ.com to learn ways people can help reduce their risk and take charge of their brain health before or after an AD/ADRD diagnosis.

CSU Chancellor Mildred García honored as women’s HERstory Maker

California Legislative Women’s Caucus recognizes García for groundbreaking achievements in honor of Women’s History Month.

(March 11, 2024) — California State University (CSU) Chancellor Mildred García was honored on March 11, by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus as a 2024 California Woman Making HERstory.

The Women’s Caucus recognized García alongside fellow women HERstory Makers during special Women’s History Month commemorations on the floors of the State Assembly and State Senate.

Chancellor García is being celebrated for her groundbreaking role as the first Latina leader of the CSU system and the first Latina to lead a four-year public university system in the nation. She also served as the system’s first Latina university president at CSU Dominguez Hills from 2007 to 2012. And from 2012 to 2018 she was president of Cal State Fullerton.

Prior to her appointment as chancellor, Dr. García served as president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), where she was the first Latina to lead one of the six

presidentially based higher education associations in Washington, D.C.

“I am honored and humbled to be recognized as a California Woman HERstory Maker alongside other remarkable women whom I deeply admire,” said Chancellor García. “I take seriously my role as the first Latina to lead

not only the nation’s largest and most diverse four-year university system, but the first Latina to lead any four-year university system in the nation. It is my hope that everywhere that CSU’s students look on our 23 university campuses, they see opportunity, inclusion, and encouragement, and perhaps, their future selves.”

Black women call for end to the D.A. Fani Willis witch hunt

Over 100 women have signed on to a statement in support of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Signers include Shirley Franklin, former Atlanta Mayor, and civil rights leader, Helen Butler. The statement reads as follows:

We, the undersigned women, fully support Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and call for an immediate end to the unwarranted investigations into her personal life, as it bears no relevance to her professional responsibilities.

When Black women ascend to positions where their voices can be heard, their presence seen, and their power felt, it often unsettles certain individuals in this country. We are currently witnessing a concerted effort to scrutinize and attack Black women in positions of power, finding any issue or flaw, no matter how small, to use against them. In Charles M. Blow’s New York Times column, “The Persecution of Harvard’s Claudine Gay,’ he refers to this phenomenon as the “Wonder Woman requirement”—the relentless pursuit of the slightest imperfections to persecute Black women who rise to high positions.

We knew that the first Black woman to become the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia would face challenges, especially when prosecuting powerful men. We simply request that DA Fani Willis be afforded the same dignity and respect as her peers, or merely treated with the same level of respect as previously shown to her. There was no scrutiny of her personal life when she prosecuted and locked up Black teachers, or when she indicted Black gang members. Let’s not alter the standards just because she’s pursuing wealthy, politically-involved men. Remove the unfair burdens placed on Black women and stop subjecting us to higher standards than others. We are not Wonder Woman.

Black women have endured centuries of oppression, from slavery and Jim Crow to various forms of bias. We’ve been the backbone of the fight for civil rights and women’s rights. We’ve

Richardson leads Chambers in Senate 35 race

San Pedro, CA – As of the latest results on Saturday, Laura Richardson has secured the top spot in the General Election in November and will face-off against a quitter who placed a distant second.

Despite a primary smear campaign of lies and halftruths by her opponent the disgraced former Compton Councilwoman who quit halfway through her first term, Laura emerged in first place and shocked the political establishment. The numbers speak for themselves – Richardson -22,695 – Chambers – 19,481.

The desperate attacks against Laura did not stop the

monumental endorsement of Mayor Karen Bass and securing Congresswoman Maxine Waters placing Laura in her highly acclaimed Voter Guide. The journey is not over and we are ready to continue to organize and navigate the challenges ahead in the November runoff election.

After the most recent vote count update by the County Registrar of Voters, Laura stated “I am thrilled at the latest vote count and remain optimistic that our message will continue to resonate with voters. Voters are tired of the mudslinging and want to know how you can help them with living wage jobs, af-

fordable housing, high cost of living, eliminating homelessness and the high cost of health care. However, we understand desperate campaigns do desperate things and I look forward to taking my positive message to the voters”.

I want to thank our legion of grassroots volunteers and supporters who propelled our people powered campaign to victory in the Primary Election. The journey is far from over as we continue the hard work that catapulted us into first place.

Richardson has secured a broad coalition of validators and endorsements.

Toothaches and cavities can cause pain, infection, and ultimately affect overall wellness, including children’s behavioral health. Mental health and oral health can be intertwined; mental health conditions like anxiety and depression can lead to poor oral health, and dental health problems often exacerbate behavioral health issues.

AS a parent or caretaker, there are steps you can take to protect your child’s oral health today – and overall health tomorrow.

Through the dental health benefits provided through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), children will have access to essential oral health care, including regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, X-rays and more.

SCHEDULE ROUTINE DENTAL CARE

Routine dental care is essential to preventing and treating many of the most common oral health issues children experience. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that a child’s first pediatric dental visit occur before their first birthday and that as they get older, they see the dentist twice a year for cleanings, X-rays and treatment.

Regular dentist visits can help identify and treat potential issues early. Once your child is old enough, visits can also include preventive care like sealants, which help stop cavities from forming.

Use the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ ‘Find a Dentist’ tool to find dental providers in your area that accept Medicaid and CHIP.

PRACTICE HEALTHY HABITS AT HOME

Encouraging good dental hygiene is another way you can reduce your child’s chances of experiencing negative side effects from poor dental health. Helping them brush their teeth twice a day and flossing regularly can keep cavities, gum disease and tooth decay at bay.

During pregnancy, you can even positively impact the health of your baby by taking care of your own teeth and gums. Daily brushing and flossing and regular dentist visits contribute to overall health and protect your baby’s teeth.

GET INSURED WITH MEDICAID AND CHIP

Your child may qualify for free or low-cost health coverage through Medicaid and CHIP. The Connecting Kids to Coverage National Campaign wants families to experience the security that comes with knowing their child’s dental care and

other preventive services are covered.

Medicaid and CHIP cover more than 39 million children in the United States and have helped ensure that more than 94% of the nation’s children have health coverage, even when their family may experience barriers to access like language differences and low health literacy. Enrollment is open yearround, meaning your family doesn’t have to wait to see if you qualify. Dental care isn’t the only thing covered— preventive care, emergency care, behavioral health care, vision care, vaccines, prescriptions, and pre- and post-natal care are all covered when your child is insured through Medicaid and CHIP.

Eligibility varies by state and depends on family income and how many people are in your household. In most states, children up to age 19 with family income up to $80,000 per year (for a family of four) may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. You can learn more about finding coverage at InsureKidsNow. gov and explore the Find a Dentist tool to find care near you.

Your child’s smile shouldn’t be a source of stress. For peace of mind, take care of even the tiniest teeth with regular check-ups, healthy habits and health coverage, like Medicaid and CHIP.

It’s time for Congress to reform pharmacy benefit managers

It is difficult enough for patients to navigate our healthcare system and afford the high costs of care without the profit-driven practices of insurance companies and their Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) making things exponentially worse.

CONGRESS should do something to hold these shadowy groups more accountable for the so-called business practices they use to drive up profits while threatening access and affordability for vulnerable patients.

Our family has unfortunately been on the receiving end of these harmful practices, with my

uncle recently recovering from a stroke on top of living with diabetes. Broken PBM policies make it more difficult for him and millions of other patients to access the care and treatments they need to stay healthy and improve their quality of life.

been able to avoid government oversight for far too long, allowing them to dictate precisely where and when patients can access certain medications through policies like prior authorization and patient steering.

accessing physician-prescribed medications, therapies and treatments, patient steering puts up additional barriers to care for patients by limiting access to vital prescriptions to the pharmacies owned by or affiliated with PBMs.

Even more shocking is the fact that, as the healthcare middlemen working between drug manufacturers and pharmacies, PBMs will negotiate with manufacturers to secure rebates and discounts on prescriptions, which are intended to be shared with patients to help reduce outof-pocket expenses at the pharmacy checkout line.

To me, that’s a sign of a broken healthcare system. Fortunately, there is legislation in Congress that could help address this issue. The bipartisan Help Ensure Lower Patient (HELP) Copays Act, which has been introduced in both the Senate and the House, would rein in and reform PBMs, bringing some much-needed oversight and accountability over these groups and practices they use to maximize profits while driving up costs and undermining access for patients.

While prior authorization can lead to lengthy delays in

However, PBMs will almost always find ways to withhold those savings, simply absorbing them to inflate their profit margins instead. That leaves millions of vulnerable Americans on the hook for higher out-of-pocket costs.

As someone who has seen firsthand the negative impact PBMs have on prescription drug access and affordability, I’m grateful to Rep. Nanette Barragán for cosponsoring the HELP Copays Act in the House and hopeful that she and the rest of California’s congressional delegation will help ensure Congress passes this muchneeded legislation without delay.

The SEC’s unreal expectations for Californians will crush our retirement plans

Mutual funds have been foundational to American investors for the past 100 years. Millions of Californians put their hard-earned dollars in mutual funds and exchangetraded funds (ETFs) to invest for college, a house down payment, and retirement. Mutual funds made investing accessible, presenting the first effective way for the middle class to pool assets to save for their future.

But the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) proposed reworking of how mutual funds are priced, bought, and sold threatens to permanently damage these products and risk the financial future of over eight million families in the Golden State.

The SEC wants to require swing pricing, a heavy-handed requirement that would force funds to swing their price, artificially changing their net asset value. While this proposal is already damaging for investors across the country, it’s especially

It shouldn’t be this way, but unfortunately PBMs have harmful for Californians and other West Coast investors. As part of this aggressive proposal, the agency will force funds to implement a hard close for orders at 1 p.m. PT.

Some industry experts even believe this deadline could mean cutting off retirement plan participant trading by 7a.m. PT! On days when funds have a lot of money flowing in, investors would be charged a higher price than normal to invest. On days when funds have money flowing out, investors would receive a lower price than normal when selling their shares.

This expectation that the SEC has set for the West Coast is totally ridiculous. 1 p.m. is the middle of the workday. And if the experts are correct and participant trading is cut off at 7a.m, we’ll need to make trades before we even have our coffee in the morning! Do they really believe that we can just drop everything we’re doing to meet their biased, East Coast deadlines?

Imagine choosing to sell

or buy a portion of your fund shares and not even knowing the final price until the following day because of the time you logged on, forcing you to trade blind. For the millions of households in California who use mutual funds to save for college or retirement, this confusion would become the reality.

These price changes could discourage people from investing in mutual funds because it’s uncertain when or by how much their prices might change. Its inherent

unfairness has already drawn criticism from both Democratic and Republican members of Congress.

And it’s not just mutual funds that are being targeted by the SEC. Other open-end funds, like ETFs, would be harmed by the liquidity risk management portion of their proposal. This means that how funds measure their liquidity—or ability to sell their investments—would change significantly, ultimately saddling investors with higher costs, unexpected tax bills, and lower returns. It would also make some of the most popular and liquid funds in the world, such as S&P 500 index funds, unviable when they reach a certain size. The SEC has failed to show how this proposal benefits investors, explain why we need swing pricing, or even demonstrate the problem they are trying to solve. There is no evidence that mandatory swing pricing, hard close, and liquidity risk management will do much to change investors’ responses to the ups and downs of the

economy. Making markets more resilient to the challenges that arise in these situations should be the highest priority for government regulators.

The proposal is not supported by data, nor does it address the costs Californians will face when looking to save for their future. People who have put their trust and hardearned money into dependable mutual funds may now have to face the harmful consequences of an unnecessary new rule.

The SEC’s proposal is bad news for the financial futures of the eight million households in California who own mutual funds or ETFs. As the SEC rushes to finalize its proposals ahead of the 2024 election, they need to take a close look at the very people they’re harming with their rules.

UCLA’s Adem Bona named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year

Bruins’ sophomore forward/center has averaged 12.4 points, 6.0 rebounds per game

UCLA men’s basketball sophomore Adem Bona has earned firstteam All-Pac-12 Conference honors for the first time in his career and has been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.

Bruins’ guard Sebastian Mack was selected to the five-person All-Freshman Team in the league’s announcement of the year-end Pac-12 awards.

This marks the second consecutive year in which UCLA has produced the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, Jaylen Clark was honored as the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Bona has become the third UCLA player to have been named the Defensive Player of the Year (joining Russell Westbrook from 2008, and Clark from 2023). Bona was one of five players named to the league’s All-Defensive Team.

In all 31 games for the Bruins this season, Bona has averaged 12.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game, the second highest blocksper-game average in the Pac-12. He has shot 58.5 percent from the field, totaling 57 blocks, 34 steals and 38 assists.

Rams to showcase Matthew Stafford documentary

The Los Angeles Rams announced their new documentary feature, “Matthew Stafford: Locked In” that gives fans an unprecedented look into the life of the Super Bowl-winning quarterback during one of the most intense stretches of an NFL season.

The show will debut Thursday, April 18 on the Rams’ digital platforms, local broadcast stations, and on NFL Network.

The team unveiled the trailer today at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals in Austin, TX as part of a discussion

featuring Summit House Co-Founder Steve Cundari, Director Justin Polk and Rams Chief Marketing Officer Kathryn Kai-ling Frederick. The

discussion was

The feature will premiere

on the Rams’ channels and NFL Network on Thursday, April 18 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, with an encore on Friday, April 19 at 12 a.m. ET/Thursday, April 18 at 9 p.m. PT. The show also will air later in April on NFL Channel.

“While we set out to pull the curtain back from one of the most intense stretches of our season – two games in five days – as our season unfolded, we recognized we had a bigger story to tell,” said Frederick.

“Matthew Stafford: Locked In not only looks at Matthew’s leadership through those five

days in December, but also showcases all aspects of Matthew and his world during the entire back half of the season, including his return to Detroit. Much like Matthew led us to a winning record and the playoffs with an amazing team around him, we had to assemble the right team to tell this story. We are grateful to Matthew and Kelly for opening up their lives to us and to Justin and Steve for joining forces with our in-house Studios department for this unprecedented look at our quarterback,” she added.

The Official Election Canvass is a 30-day period in which the RR/CC processes and verifies all outstanding ballots to ensure that every eligible ballot cast by Election Day is counted. With the continued updates, the races in Compton are close. In the County Clerk’s race, incumbent Vernell McDaniel is picking up steam and has gained ground on frontrunner, Satra Zurita. The budget calls for $200 million for the ITC from the Federal Transit Administration.

“Today the Biden/Harris Administration demonstrated their commitment to the ITC Project and their faith in the City of Inglewood and its partners to deliver this transformative investment for our community and region,” said Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts. “We are grateful for the support, and we will use it to further energize our work.”

The budget proposal comes on the heels of the Biden Administration’s approval in December 2023 for the project to enter the Engineering Phase of development with a pledge of $1.009 billion in federal funds once the project completes that phase and enters into a multi-year funding agreement with the federal government.

The Fiscal Year 2025 funding suggested in this Budget will be the first installment of those funds; its inclusion in the spending plan indicates the Biden Administration anticipates the multi-year agreement will be completed during the fiscal year.

“Our project team is on track to finalize our funding agreement with the federal government. We are working with our partners to secure the remainder of the needed funds to match this significant federal support for the ITC and expect to have the commitments we need in hand soon,” concluded Mayor Butts.

TENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same

lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three

steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 877-237-7878, or visit www. peakforeclosure.com using file number assigned to this case: CAHLF-23019806 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 118442-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. Alvin Ailey sets up residency in SoCal at The Music Center

The Music Center continues its 21st season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center with a tremendous seven-performance engagement by the illustrious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater that will captivate audiences over five days, March 20–24 at The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

THE New Yorkbased company will begin its exclusive four-year Southern California residency at The Music Center by showcasing an exhilarating repertory in two programs, blending audience favorites and Ailey classics with three works making their Los Angeles premieres; the two programs will alternate among the seven performance dates.

The first program (Program A) includes the L.A. premieres of both Ode (choreography by Jamar Roberts, 2019) and Are You in Your Feelings? (choreography by Kyle Abraham, 2022) as well as the signature masterpiece Revelations (choreography by Alvin Ailey, 1960); program A will be performed on March 20, 22, 23 (matinee) and 24 (evening).

The second program (Program B) includes the L.A. premiere of new work CENTURY (choreography by Amy Hall Garner, 2023), a restaging of Dancing Spirit (choreography by Ronald K. Brown, 2009) with Revelations as the capstone; program B will be performed on March 21, 23 (evening) and 24 (matinee).

“The diverse pieces that Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will perform, including three works never before seen in L.A., convey the company’s passionate spirit and the dancers’ extraordinary technique. Once again, the Ailey company will showcase its incredible art-

istry that has made it a cultural phenomenon,” said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO of The Music Center.

“I also want to congratulate Ailey on its 65th anniversary, which coincides with The Music Center’s 60th year, and its continued success in inspiring audiences. We will proudly present this company for many years to come, as it shines a light on the power and beauty of the performing arts,” Moore added.

In May 2023, The Music Center and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater jointly announced the company’s commitment to perform for four consecutive years at The Music Center’s iconic Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, beginning with the current 2023–2024 season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. The multi-year residency is the first of its kind in The Music Center’s 60-year history.

The Los Angeles premiere of CENTURY, the first work by choreographer Amy Hall Garner for the Ailey company, is a deeply personal piece inspired by her grandfather’s 100th birthday. Taking a cue from his spirited essence and set to the music of Ray Charles, Count Basie, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and more, CENTURY is a pure dance work celebrating life, resilience and joy.

Ronald K. Brown’s Dancing

Spirit (2009) pays tribute to the profound influence of Judith Jamison, a former Ailey dancer and artistic director, with a moving work that echoes the title of Jamison’s autobiography. Set to music by Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis and War, Brown’s evocative choreography uses movement from Cuba, Brazil and the United States to conjure dancing spirits who embody Jamison’s elegance, dignity and generosity.

Kyle Abraham’s Are You in Your Feelings? (2022) is a celebration of Black culture, Black music and the youthful spirit that perseveres in everyone. Scored to a “mixtape” of soul, hip-hop and R&B and featuring beloved musical artists like

Jhené Aiko, Drake, Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar, Jazmine Sullivan and Summer Walker, the critically acclaimed work resonates with the themes of love and relationships.

“A lot of these songs are the songs that I play when I’m at my lowest and at my highest,” said Abraham. “I wanted to find a way to thank those artists for their music and thank our culture for their contributions to this world in which we live.”

Ode (2019), choreographed by former Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts, offers a meditation on the beauty and fragility of life in a time of growing gun violence. This tender, engrossing work will be staged with an all-female cast donning Roberts’ own

tume designs and will feature a jazz score, including Don Pullen’s Suite (Sweet) Malcolm (Part 1: Memories and Gunshots).

In true Ailey style, each engagement in this new Music Center residency culminates with the American masterpiece Revelations, which has become a must-see since its debut in 1960.

Beloved by generations of audiences, Alvin Ailey’s signature work is a tribute to his heritage and childhood memories of growing up in the South. His masterpiece moves audiences with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, and evokes timeless themes of determination, hope and transcendence.

“I know firsthand the profound and positive impact of an Ailey performance, having been inspired by Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece Revelations as a student growing up in the Los Angeles area,” said associate artistic director Matthew Rushing.

“After my three decades with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, it is an honor during the company’s milestone season to lead the extraordinary dancers back to The Music Center stage with a repertory full of dynamic choreographic voices in the city where our legendary founder Alvin Ailey took his first steps into the world of dance,” Rushing went on to say.

To engage and inspire students and educators with dance and movement, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s residency will include a special matinee performance for approximately 2,500 middle school and high school students on Friday, March 22.

The Music Center has arranged for Ailey to provide an AileyDance for Active Aging workshop for older adults in partnership with non-profit organization EngAGE, Inc., at The Piedmont Senior Apartments in North Hollywood.

Tickets to performances are available for purchase now by visiting musiccenter.org/ailey or calling (213) 972-0711.
