PREPARE FOR EXTREME HEAT WITH “HEAT READY CA”

Stay hydrated and safe from the heat this summer

Sacramento, Calif. – High temperatures during summer are typical, but as the planet continues to become hotter and drier, Californians should be prepared to feel record temperatures and experience extreme heat events. Extreme heat is characterized as two or more days of hotter temperatures that are well above normal conditions for an area, with no relief or cooling off at night. Extreme heat can pose

MOLINA HEALTHCARE OF CALIFORNIA DONATES SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Molina Healthcare of California recently donated over 450 school and housing supply items to United Families of the Children (UFC) in support of the Molina College Angels program, which benefits foster youth transitioning from high school to college. Supplies donated included dorm kits featuring desk lamps, bed sheets, laundry baskets, towels and more.

“Molina is proud to partner with UFC to assist underserved students in achieving their educational goals,” said Abbie Totten, plan president of Molina Healthcare of California. “We are pleased to provide supplies and much needed resources, so that they can focus on their studies and future careers.”

Nationally, according to UFC, about 53% of foster youth graduate high school and only 3% go on to earn a 4-year degree. Without a consistent family base, foster youth often struggle to cover necessities such as housing, dorm essentials, books, and adequate meal plans.

“Dedicated partners like Molina are the kind of ‘friends’ United Friends looks to for support when our foster youth reach these milestones,” said Carla Palmer, director of development at UFC. “We are grateful for their financial support of our Summer Kickoff celebration and the genuine care that went into creating dorm kits for our college freshmen.”

LA County Board of Supervisors say no to racism

The supervisors develop a comprehensive plan addressing racism and creates a roadmap for a more equitable and inclusive LA County

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (Board) has unanimously adopted a groundbreaking Countywide Racial Equity Strategic Plan with five strategic goals intended to measurably improve the lives of residents and communities throughout Los Angeles County (County).

THE Board, acting on a motion by Supervisors Mitchell and Solis, declared its commitment to fostering meaningful and lasting change through the adoption of the Countywide Racial Equity Strategic Plan. Developed by the Chief Executive Office’s Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative, it outlines dozens of strategic goals and initiatives aimed to address structural racism.

Co-created with residents, community-based organizations, civic leaders, philanthropic organizations, academic partners, and public/private agencies, the plan presents a 10-year roadmap to foster a more equitable and inclusive County where all residents are healthy, experience justice, and thrive.

The creation of the Countywide Racial Equity Strategic Plan was a directive of the Board when a motion was unanimously adopted on July 21, 2020 to establish an Anti-Racist County Policy Agenda, declaring racism a matter of public health in the County. Moreover, ARDI was established and is charged with developing the underlying policy platform and implementing the plan in collaboration with department staff and leadership.

The County identified five strategic goals to be achieved through multiple initiatives over the next decade:

1. Increase Attainment of Postsecondary Credentials with Significant Labor Market Value

2. Reduce Adult First-Time Felony Convictions

3. Increase Stable Full-Time Employment Among Individual Adults

4. Increase the Percentage of Families with Incomes Above 250%

Federal Poverty Level

5. Reduce Infant Mortality

In addition to providing a new vision for achieving equity in Los Angeles County, the strategic plan outlines several historical factors that helped exacerbate racial disparities and inequity across the County. The plan reveals significant racial gaps in high school graduation, in year-round full-time employment, and much larger gaps in college enrollment, college graduation, family incomes, and homeownership rates.

“With our first ever Racial Equity Strategic Plan, Los Angeles County has actionable steps for moving with clear direction and accountability towards achieving racial equity and justice,” said Second District Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “I want to thank Dr. Scorza for leading the creation of this historic plan and the Board of Supervisors for approving my motion to establish a shared commitment across all County departments in owning our piece in making this plan a reality. It is the only way we can do the hard and necessary work of addressing long-standing injustices and creating meaningful change that can be seen and felt in the lives of our residents.”

“As the elected governing body of Los Angeles County, we must take a strong stance against racism to send a message that we will neither comply with nor enable policies

that exacerbate historic injustices,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, First District. “To that end, I am proud that we have a vehicle such as ARDI to espouse the values of anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion.”

“Los Angeles County is one of the most diverse counties in one of the most diverse countries in the world. That is our strength, but as long as racial gaps persist, we aren’t living up to our potential. This Countywide Racial Equity Strategic Plan deploys many of our best tools in our mission of creating a more just County for all of our communities,” said Chair of the Board of Supervisors Janice Hahn.

“Building a more equitable, just Los Angeles County requires intentional steps that lift up every one of our marginalized communities,” said Third District Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath. “I am proud to support the Racial Equity Strategic Plan and, importantly, to be part of realizing the change the plan envisions.”

“At its heart, this is about the County being introspective,” said Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “We need to consistently examine our practices so that our County departments can best serve some of the most challenged residents who live in disadvantaged communities—including rural areas. Adopting this plan will help en-

(StatePoint) The start of a new school year carries with it so much potential, particularly when students -- and their parents -- stay organized. Amid the back-to-school chaos, use these tips and gear recommendations to help keep everyone on track, whether they are at school, at home or on-the-go:

Notes and Big Ideas

Color-coded notebooks and binders, along with labeled dividers, can help you keep your coursework straight and your note-taking organized. Take your color-coding a step further by extending the concept to the tools you write with. Pilot Pen’s G2 gel pen is a go-to for busy students and parents with its smooth, long-lasting gel ink that’s able to keep up with busy schedules. Science has shown that writing a to-do list with an appealing color can lead to greater productivity. Inspired by color trends and color psychology, the G2 Harmony Collection colors were developed to promote balance, relaxation and hope, helping students get

more done, stay positive and achieve their highest potential this school year. G2 is available in four point sizes and over 35 colors, so it’s ideal for note-taking, writing down big ideas, goal-setting and more.

Planning and Scheduling

With the back-to-school season comes a flurry of planning and scheduling -- from after-school activities to field trips. Parents and kids alike can stay on top of all the last-minute changes with a desk calendar and an erasable pen. Pilot’s FriXion line of erasable pens and markers write smooth and erase clean, so you can edit plans as often as they change. It’s much easier to remember tasks and events when you’ve recorded the details in a central location, so start a habit of entering all activities into your calendar as soon as they’re planned. The smooth gel ink and precise point of the FriXion Synergy Clicker is great for detailed planning, while FriXion Fineliner brings colorful, mistake-free writing to notes and calendars.

Lockers, Backpacks and Desks

Use organizational tools anywhere school supplies are stored, such as lockers, backpacks and home study areas. Simple shelving and magnetic

door organizers can maximize storage potential in any locker, whereas a backpack with multiple pockets allows you to arrange items by subject. Periodically empty your backpack completely; you may be surprised by the loose papers you find at the bottom. Use the opportunity to re-order items as-needed and to wipe down the bag’s interior. Parents and kids should keep clutter to a minimum in home workspaces with filing systems and supply trays. This will help prevent important papers and other items from going missing and improve productivity.

Down to the Details

If you’re smudge-prone, use quick-dry ink for effortlessly clean lines. When it’s time to study, this will make reading your notes a lot easier. Pilot’s Precise Rolling Ball, available in capped and retractable styles, features a precision tip -- great for organized notes and homework.

For more back-to-school inspiration and tips, visit powertothepen.com.

Staying organized is easier said than done for families and students. However, relying on tools meant for the task at hand, whether that’s note-taking or event scheduling, can make it much simpler.

Davis Middle School students talk about their homeless project

City Councilman Jonathan Bowers (District 3) invited the Davis Middle School Tech Team to present their Sustainable Homeless Center Project to the Compton City Council in June.

DURING the regular monthly council meeting, eighth grade student Alexa Rodriguez, seventh grade student Juiliana Iniguez, and sixth graders Citlali Almejo and Jackelin Vigil talked about their plan to the Mayor and council members.

The Tech Team’s project, which was awarded second place at the City of STEM Competition in Los Angeles, provided a solution to the city’s homelessness issues by using STEM and sustainable resources.

The team designed the model homes using Tinkercad, an AutoCAD software, and 3D printed them. They imagined a center that would use sustainable materials, be self-sustaining, and rely on re-

Gus Newport

“I’m lucky for what my grandmother instilled in me: Don’t think you know it all, learn something new every day. I learned it by engaging with people and having an analysis, and understanding the integrated role that can be played by communities, universities, government, all kinds of people. We don’t live in a community that has reached its limit as to what’s best.”

GUS Newport, who passed away in June, was a warrior for social justice, equality, and peace who spent his life pushing local, national, and international communities to get closer to “best.”

He was a two-term mayor of Berkeley, California, a friend and colleague of Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Harry Belafonte, Angela Davis, Danny Glover, and Bernie Sanders, an honorary member of Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress, a member of the advisory board of the U.S. Conference on Apartheid, co-chair of the U.S. Peace Council, a vice president of the World Peace Council, and a master of community development in every sense of the term.

He was also a friend of the Children’s Defense Fund and a beloved presence and leader in intergenerational dialogues at CDF’s annual Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry, where he will be missed by those gathering this week. He loved CDF’s Haley Farm and its spirit of allowing people to experience the beloved community Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned.

His commitment to change began in his hometown, Roch-

ester, N.Y., where he became leader of the Monroe County Nonpartisan League civil rights organization in his 20s. Gus was helping defend nine Black Muslim worshipers who were arrested during a police raid on their Rochester mosque in 1961 when he met Malcolm X, who became a mentor and friend. He went on to help Malcolm X found the Organization of Afro-American Unity and last saw him in Harlem four days before was assassinated. Within a few years Gus had moved to California, where he worked with community programs in the Berkeley city government before running for mayor in 1979.

He was Berkeley’s second Black mayor, and his historic victory as the first successful candidate backed by the progressive Berkeley Citizens Action coalition helped set the tone for the city’s future. During his two terms he led

Berkeley to become the first U.S. city to divest from South Africa and the first to provide domestic partner benefits for LGBTQ+ families, and he fought for rent control, affordable housing, police reform, child care benefits, environmental protections, and more. He also had the opportunity to network with other progressive mayors, including the then-mayor of Burlington, Vermont, Bernie Sanders, who became a lifelong friend. Decades later Gus would be a supporter and surrogate for Senator Sanders in his Presidential campaign.

After Berkeley Gus continued working for change in communities across the country, from the successful Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood to rebuilding efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and continued his passionate support of international social justice campaigns, which even as

mayor had taken him from his anti-apartheid leadership to visiting war-torn El Salvador.

And in recent years his dedication to intergenerational dialogue and mentoring was clear in one of our shared commitments: he was a beloved fellow member of the National Council of Elders.

Vincent Harding, James Lawson, Phil Lawson, Dolores Huerta, and Grace Lee Boggs convened the National Council of Elders to share what we’ve learned from 20th century civil rights movements with young leaders of the 21st century and promote the theory and practice of nonviolence.

Members gathered in Greensboro, North Carolina in July 2012 to create a declaration of purpose, pledging to work with younger generations to do everything in our power to bring a greater measure of justice, equality, and peace to our country and world, and in 2020 issued a “Greensboro Declaration II”

renewing that commitment. We were clear-eyed about how far we still have to go to create the national and world community based on peace, love, and mutual responsibility we have dreamed about and worked toward for so long, especially in a moment when white supremacy, intolerance, and bigotry are again on a dangerous rise.

But we agreed “we are energized and hopeful as we collaborate with younger generations to create new lifeways and relations across the globe,” and we offered the second Declaration “as an encouragement to all people to join with us on the path toward that new world we still dream about.

Together, we can overcome as we open our hearts to find ways toward loving communities.” To put it another way, in Gus Newport’s words, we don’t believe we’ve reached our limit of what’s best. We do still believe, working together, that we will get there.

As a seasoned public administrator, Groomes has made significant contributions to the communities he has served on the East and West coasts.

Groomes has nearly 40 years of experience, which include previously serving as the City Manager for East Palo Alto and Carson. His expertise consulting and working in both big cities and smaller municipalities has resulted in major economic development impacts, fostering growth and prosperity for the citizens he has served.

Groomes is no stranger to Compton, having previously served as the interim City Manager in 2016. His prior experience in city grants provide him with valuable insights into the specific needs and aspirations of the Compton community. Mr. Groomes deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities that arise in local government will help him to serve in this pivotal role.

“I am delighted to return to Compton and serve as the City Manager for the next six months,” Groomes said in a released statement. “I will do all that I can to help our city thrive and work diligently to find a permanent City Manager who will bring and inspire positive change and prosperity in Compton.”

Groomes was appointed as interim City Manager following the recent removal of former City Manager Thomas from the role. However, due to policies related to CalPERS retirement regulations, Groomes will serve in this capacity for a period of six months. During his tenure in this leadership role, Groomes will be charged with leading the search for a permanent City Manager to ensure a smooth transition and the selection of a candidate who will make a lasting impact on Compton’s future.

“The Countywide Racial Equity Strategic Plan represents a commitment and roadmap for change that over the next decade will aim to improve life outcomes for all of LA County’s residents,” said Dr. D’Artagnan Scorza, executive director of Racial Equity for Los Angeles County and the Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative. “The County is continuing to set an example of how government can be a force for good, ignite progress, and create a future where every resident’s potential knows no bounds.”

With the adoption of the Countywide Racial Equity Strategic Plan, Los Angeles County furthers its commitment to create a more equitable, more inclusive, and more just community for all its residents. significant health risks, worsen California’s drought conditions, and increase the likelihood of wildfires.

As families enjoy the summer, it is critical for individuals to recognize the urgent need to protect themselves, their communities, and the environment. California’s Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications’ “Heat Ready CA” campaign aims to help prevent the worst effects of extreme heat emergencies and ensure the well-being of all, especially those in vulnerable communities.

The goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of extreme heat and encourage Californians to create extreme heat plans to stay cool, hydrated and ultimately keep individuals and their loved ones safer.

“Summer heat waves can be dangerous, especially for young children, older adults, people with chronic diseases and disabilities, outdoor workers, people who are unhoused and those who are pregnant,” said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás Aragón. “It’s important to protect yourself and your loved ones by checking in on friends and family who may need assistance, monitoring weather forecasts, staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors, and visiting cooling centers.”

The top three tips to beat the heat this summer and prevent

and frustration. If time and our multicultural leaders teach us anything, it is that courageous voices and principled activism can and do make a difference.

It is also clear that our resolve to support and advance a diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda on this campus will not be diminished or deferred by this court ruling. Nor will we allow a projection of an Asian figure as the face of this attack on affirmative action to drive a wedge between diverse voices that are inclusive of all people of color, including brothers and sisters in the API community, White allies, and others whose common struggle and connectedness to one another is solid and unbreakable.

If anything, the teachable

heat-related illness include:

• staying hydrated,

• visiting air-conditioned spaces, and

• knowing the signs of heat illness.

Those at greater risk of heat illness include young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with disabilities or chronic health conditions. Californians living in areas with limited access to shade or air conditioning are also at risk. Stay alert to headaches, fatigue, and dizziness, which may be signs of heat illness, such as dehydration, and can be avoided by drinking at least 2 cups of water every hour.

As part of California’s commitment to promote proper hydration during extreme heat, Heat Ready CA and Cal Fresh encourage individuals to explore ways to add flavor to water for a more refreshing taste, and are sharing a delicious watermelon and strawberry infused water recipe that makes staying hy-

Let’s all pull together and show our support for each other in these trying times. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO

PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-683-2468 option 1 or visit this Internet Web site www. servicelinkASAP.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-05617. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-683-2468 option 1, or visit this internet website www. servicelinkASAP.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-05617 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written

notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY

OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as

a courtesy to those not present at the sale.

If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or visit this internet website www.ndscorp.com/ sales, using the file number assigned to this case 23-00483-CECA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANT*: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are a “representative of all eligible tenant buyers” you may be able to purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.

First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 888-264-4010, or visit this internet website www.ndscorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 23-00483CECA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee.

Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as a “representative of all eligible tenant buyers” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

Disney comes to EssenceFest

STARS FROM “HAUNTED MANSION” AND “AHSOKA” MAKE APPEARANCE AT HERALDED CULTURE EVENT

BURBANK, Calif – Disney, the major entertainment sponsor of this year’s Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, put on a dazzling show for the thousands of attendees this past weekend with the director and stars along with footage from “Haunted Mansion,” opening in theaters July 28, Lucasfilm’s new Star Wars series “Ahsoka,” debuting on Disney+ on August 23, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” opening in theaters November 22.

ON Friday, “Haunted Mansion” cast members LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Rosario Dawson and director Justin Simien kicked off their Festival weekend by attending a haunting and frightfully fun Influencer Brunch at the Grand Oaks Mansion at River City Venues. There, they charmed the 100+ influencers in a Q&A moderated by ABC’s Race and Culture executive producer Nzinga Blake, mixed and mingled and enjoyed the themed food, specialty drinks and live entertainment.

Guests received special gift bags with mini posters, water bottles, fanny packs and

Fandango movie tickets on behalf of “Haunted Mansion.”

The film’s ensemble cast also includes Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Chase W. Dillon and Daniel Levy, with Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost. Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, “Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters. The film’s producers are Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, with Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers.

Friday evening on the mainstage at the Superdome, Simien, Stanfield, Haddish and Dawson took to the stage to

greet the thousands of thrilled attendees, discuss “Haunted Mansion” and introduce the film’s trailer, which caused major excitement when it was shown on the giant Caesars Superdome screens. The audience also appreciated a 30 second spot that highlighted new and upcoming movies and series from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm. The evening featured concert performances by headliner Lauryn Hill, along with Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Ari Lennox, Tobe Nwigwe, Jagged Edge and Guest DJ Clark Kent.

Saturday morning, the “Haunted Mansion” talent assembled on the Essence Stage at the Convention Center for a lively conversation, moderated by Angélique Roché, about the absolute blast they all had making the film, and screened a 30 second spot to the crowd’s delight. They encouraged everyone to stick around for the “Disney Studios Showcase” at the Essence Film Festival later that afternoon, where one lucky attendee would receive four tickets to the world premiere of “Haunted Mansion.”
