COMPTON REVVING UP EFFORTS FOR SPRING ELECTION

It’s that time again. For Compton residents, It’s time to start thinking about the electoral process that will take place in their backyard The upcoming Primary Nominating Election in the City of Compton is scheduled for March 5, 2024.

THE upcoming Primary Nominating Election on March 5 is a crucial event that will decide key roles in our governance, shaping the City of Compton's future," said Compton City Clerk Vernell McDaniel. "I urge all residents to participate actively and stay engaged in this vital democratic process." This electoral process will determine key positions in our local governance, including City Council District 1 and District 4, as well as a special election for the crucial roles of City Attorney and City Clerk. Registered voters will cast their ballots solely for the district they call home, ensuring a direct representation of their voices in local governance. Should a candidate fail to secure 51 percent of the votes for a particular office, a runoff election is slated for Nov. 5, 2024, involving the two candidates who received the highest number of votes in the Presidential Primary Election. Additionally, the timeline for

nomination papers is as follows: by Dec. 8, 2023, incumbent officers of the city must file their nomination papers. However, if such papers aren't filed by then, voters will have until Dec. 13, 2023, to nominate candidates other than the incumbents for those elective offices. As stated by the City Charter, the City Clerk has the responsibility of overseeing all city elections and plays a crucial role in processing nominations for the mayor, City Council, and all other elected positions governing our city, while also accepting campaign filings.

Planet Health Compton founder Roland Jackson remembered by city council By Dennis J. Freeman During its closing comments during a Tuesday, Nov. 28 meeting, members of the Compton City Council paid homage to a thriving small business owner who was having an impact on the city. It was a somber tribute as several council members reflected on the loss of small business owner Roland Jackson. According to Shavonna Brooks, Jackson’s partner, the Planet Health Compton Marketplace founder passed away after reportedly being involved in a fatal car accident. “I did want to close also in the memory of Roland Jackson which was one of my friends from back in the day,” District 1 Councilman Andre Spicer said. “Just want to send out love to Lynn Boone and the family. Although we don’t have the best relationship, I would never wish that on anyone.” Planet Health Compton Marketplace opened its doors in April of 2022. Brooks, in a conversation with The Bulletin newspaper, said she plans to keep the business open. In the wake of Jackson passing away from a reported fatal car accident recently, Brooks said she wants to keep the doors open to the vegan Hispanic and soul food cafe. Rams, Chargers players honored for work with local charities Each of the NFL’s 32 teams announced players who best represent their charitable efforts to local communities that they play and serve. For the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, that means two of the best at their respective positions. The Rams nominated wide receiver Cooper Kupp for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. The Chargers announced safety Derwin James as their nominee. Kupp joined forces with renowned LA-region chefs and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for

the 8th Annual Taste of the Rams event to combat food insecurity in Los Angeles. The evening raised almost $200,000 to provide essential assistance to families and individuals facing food insecurity in LA County and the funding helped the LA Regional Food Bank distribute hundreds of thousands of nutritious meals across LA County. It was the fourth consecutive year Kupp partnered with the LA Regional Food Bank and served as the event’s Honorary Chair. n Charities, see page 8
