COMPTON ALUMNA IS A SUCCESSFUL LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR
When life gave her lemons, Karneisha Christian-Stewart literally used her father’s recipe to make lemonade – building a thriving beverage business in Compton called Pucker Up Lemonade Company. The Compton College alumna now also sells her many flavors of lemonade, iced tea, and infused waters at the certified farmers market hosted on campus every Wednesday.
“
WHILE I had never participated in other farmers’ markets, I feel the community is so fortunate to have Compton College in our backyard,” she said. “It was a no-brainer to participate in the farmers’ market on campus given my long relationship with the college.” She began her three-decade-long affiliation with Compton College at the age of 14 when she landed a job at the college’s Financial Aid Office through a state-funded summer youth employment program in the early 1990s. Being an ambitious and self-directed teen, Christian-Stewart pushed herself to finish high school early. While still in high school, she dually enrolled at Compton College n Puckerup, see page 8
Compton gets into holiday spirit with annual Christmas parade The 68th An nual Compton Christmas Parade took place on Dec. 9, 2023. Those participated include members of the Compton City Council, elected officials like U.S. Congres swoman Maxine Waters, local mar ching bands, and a handful of local celebrities. Candidates announced for Compton election races By Dennis J. Freeman Compton could have a big shakeup among its City Council members. Two of the council spots are up for grabs in the spring 2024 election. That's not all. Also in the mix for election are the City Clerk and City Attorney. LASD seek assistance for information in Compton murder A press conference was held by Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s homicide detectives to provide information about the murder of 23-year-old Miguel Angel Prado. The press conference was joined by the parents of victim, Maria Sanchez and Jose Prado, his siblings, Compton Station Captain Terrance Bell, and Mayor of Compton, Emma Sharif. The detectives are seeking assistance from the public for information that could lead to the apprehension and prosecution of individual(s) responsible for the death of Prado. On Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at approximately 12:46 a.m., Compton Sheriff ’s deputies
responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at the 100 block of E. Caldwell Street in the city of Compton. Upon arrival, deputies observed Prado in the driver seat of an SUV, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso. Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and began medical treatment of Prado. Prado succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
