REBUKES COMPTON CITY ATTORNEY false claims

- City Attorney Eric Perrodin has had enough. At the conclusion of the July 25 City Council meeting, Perrodin sternly shut down a couple of widely spread rumors that had been manifesting for a while in council chambers.

WITH the City Council going dark for the month of August with no public forums, the city attorney made sure that the residents of Compton were left with an indelible message about what he deems as non-truths having a platform during council meetings.

The biggest thorn that has drawn the ire of Perrodin are the constant verbal attacks by some citizens who have openly questioned the valid-

ity of a couple of councilmembers.

The public comments section on the council’s weekly agenda has been a space for these factless assertions to grow. The two items that Perrodin wanted to put to bed for good were ver-

bal doubts being cast by local residents about where his residence is, and that District 2 Councilmember Andre Spicer had not legitimately beat former representative Isaac Galvan.

During the portion of the agenda set aside for council comments, Perrodin went hard at the naysayers, especially those who have questioned the validity of his residency.

“I’ve never been convicted of any crime,” Perrodin said. “And if you believe I do not live in the city of Compton, I would urge you to report that to any government authority that you think should indict me, whoever you think that is. [Because] there’s a lot of people coming to that podium and they’re running for election. It’s an agenda. It’s a lot of gamesmanship going on out there.”

In regards to addressing accusations that Spicer is not the real representative of District 2, Perrodin read off a portion of the summary from the written legal opinion that came directly from Judge Michelle Williams, clarifying the winner of the

Birthing life into a community garden

Students and members of the faculty from KIPP Compton Community School braved the heat on July 15 to dig and set up a community garden just across the street from the lower school. The KIPP Compton Community School has two locations and is broken up into lower and upper schools. The main purpose of building the garden is to teach students about the different food items that they can eat. It was also an opportunity for students to learn how they can grow their own food. Some of the items planted included hot peppers, cucumbers, carrots, watermelon, sweet potatoes, Elderberry, jalapeno, and Butternut squash. For more photos, please page 3.

Scholarship for premier Black architect Paul R. Williams launched

The Paul R. Williams Collection announces the launch of The Paul R. Williams Scholarship & Education Fund, an initiative created to inspire, support, and celebrate young people pursuing careers in architecture.

THE Fund is named for trailblazing architect Paul R. Williams, FAIA, who designed more than 3,000 structures across his five-decade career that began in the 1920s, including some 2,000 designs in his native Southern California. Even with the racist practices of the era, including those that barred him from living in many of the neighborhoods where he built homes, Williams became favored by affluent business leaders and celebrities, earning renown as “architect to the stars,” while also building affordable housing and public projects. This year marks the centennial of Mr. Williams’ becoming the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

With a goal of inspiring future generations through the legacy of Mr. Williams and other trailblazing figures within the field, the newly established Fund will introduce K-12 students to career paths within the field of architecture.

The fund will also provide financial support and mentoring to students of color on their journey to professional licensing, with scholarships for fourth and fifth-year architecture students attending one of the seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) offering an accredited architecture program, as well as at the University of Southern California, Mr. Williams’ alma mater.

The inaugural fundraising gala for the Fund will take place on October 11, 2023, in partnership with the landmark Beverly Hills Hotel, for which Mr. Williams completed a major renovation beginning in the late 1940s, including the iconic signage and design elements of enduring appeal.

Quote from Karen E. Hudson, Executive Director of The Paul R. Williams Scholarship & Education Fund: “I am often asked, ‘Why now?’ As caretakers of my grandfather’s estate, we have always tried to make decisions that he would make. Without a doubt, he would be heartbroken by the fact that 100 years after he became the first African American member of the AIA, Black licensed architects represent only 2% of AIA membership today. This effort is more than a tribute to my grandfather and other trailblazers in the field, it is a call to action.”

Kipp Compton Community School equips students with community garden

Bulletin) – Pulling up to the lower school of Kipp Compton Community School on July 15, the obvious was that it was hot. Really hot. Across the street from the lower school which is located at 1650 W. 134th Street, the distinct sound of shovels hitting hit was vibrant and clear.

THE rain of sweat drenched everyone out there trying to make something special happen. What was happening was officials, volunteers and students alike standing side-byside trying their best to make a community garden come to life.

“Today, we are building a community garden,” said Eryn Harris, who serves as a dean at KIPP Compton Community School. ”The goal for the garden is really to teach kids about

different food items that we can eat, and also getting the kids really involved in growing their own food and seeing things like starting from the ground and being able to see it flourish. I want them to be able to take it back and talk about it in science class, also in health.”

Some of the items that faculty, staff, students, and community volunteers helped planted in the garden included Butternut squash, watermelon, sage, rosemary, sweet potatoes, hot peppers, cucumbers, and jalapeno. The purpose in creating this community garden is for students to have healthier eating choices, Harris went on to say.

“I just really want to get them involved more so in eating healthier to be honest,” quipped Harris. “A lot of our kids…we eat a lot of snacks and junk food. I just wanted to give them like vegetables that are healthy for our students. I want to really to be able to like you can see that you can grow it and do it on your own. Another part of it is teaching them about ownership and taking pride in what they do.”

Dispelling Common Misconceptions About Hospice Care

(StatePoint) Hospice is intended to provide comfort and support to patients at the end of their life so that they can experience their remaining time in the best ways possible. Experts say that unfortunately, misconceptions about hospice often lead people to make uninformed decisions at a critical, complex juncture in their lives.

support and specialized medical care to those ready to forgo curative treatment. Research has shown that a person who spends time on hospice has a greater quality of life at the end of their life. And while the goal is not to prolong life, there are statistics that show that hospice gives patients more time compared to patients who had the same disease trajectory and didn’t receive hospice.

Myth: Hospice is only appropriate for the last few days of life.

Myth: Hospice is only for patients with specific diseases.

Fact: Anyone with a life-limiting chronic disease, from congestive heart failure to pulmonary disease to Alzheimer’s, can choose hospice.

Myth: Hospice ends when the patient dies.

Fact: Hospice providers often offer support to those who have lost a loved one. In the case of Interim HealthCare, bereavement services are offered for 13 months.

“ THERE is often an idea that hospice equates to giving up. But hospice is actually about taking control,” says Paul Mastrapa, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc. “It’s the job of the hospice team to understand what a patient’s goals for end-of-life care are, and help them live that last trajectory of their life the way they want to.”

To help patients, their caregivers and family members, and those in the healthcare industry better understand the services and benefits hospice provides, Interim HealthCare is dispelling some of the most common misconceptions:

Myth: Hospice means giving up.

Fact: The primary goal of hospice is delivering comfort,

Fact: Hospice can actually last for months, and entering hospice sooner rather than later translates to fewer hospitalizations, better symptom relief and greater comfort.

Myth: You must give up all your medications.

Fact: While the hospice care team will make recommendations about which medications are still beneficial to a patient at their stage of illness, patients and families get the final say.

Myth: Hospice is a place.

Fact: Hospice can entail in-patient care, but more typically, services are delivered wherever a patient calls home. The nurse, social worker, spiritual care provider, aide and other members of the hospice care team meet the patient where they are, be that in a residential home, an assisted living community or in another institutional setting.

Myth: Hospice work is draining.

Fact: When done right, hospice work can be extremely rewarding. Hospice care workers help patients and families find peace of mind, and reach a place of acceptance during a complicated and emotional time in their lives. Hospice workers believe in the mission of providing compassionate, patient-centric medical care and support to those at the end of their life, and they’re given a voice in the individualized care they provide.

The hospice market is the second-fastest growing healthcare segment nationwide, according to Bank of America research, which translates to a growing number of job opportunities. Hospice providers are currently recruiting candidates just starting out in their career and those looking to make a change. To learn more, visit careers.interimhealthcare. com.

So This Is Old Age

Dr. James L. Snyder

The other morning I got up; at least, I tried to get up, but the bones in every part of my body had organized a labor strike against me. I’m not quite sure what they were protesting.

AS I lay there groaning over these bones, I did not realize how many bones I had in my body. I’m sure some bones in my body shouldn’t be there, and I’ll have to ask my mother how they got there.

If I thought my bones were creaking when I was lying in bed, the bones were screaming a lot louder as I rolled over and got up. As I wobbled out to the kitchen, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage

some and said, “Well, old man. What’s it like getting old?”

Even at this stage in life, my mind is active, and I had a very quirky response to that question, but fortunately for me, I did remember not to mention it. My wife came to the door of my office and said, “Do you remember your doctor’s appointment for today?”

Maybe this is the reason my bones were creaking this

morning. They didn’t want me to see the doctor because they knew I would tell him about my creaking bones, and he might do something about it.

I never knew what old age was, but now I’m beginning to comprehend it a little bit more.

At the doctor’s, I complained to him about my creaking old bones and asked what I could do. He looked at me, smiled an old doctor’s

Bringing Truth to Light

On July 25, the day that would have been Emmett Till’s 82nd birthday, President Joe Biden hosted a White House signing ceremony for a proclamation establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument in Mississippi and Illinois. Three sites are now part of this monument honoring Emmett Till, who had just turned 14 when he was abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi in August 1955, and his devoted mother Mamie.

Her decision to defy authorities who wanted Emmett’s body buried quickly in Mississippi, and instead to hold his funeral in Chicago with an open casket to let the world see what his hateful racist murderers had done to her child, became an inflection point in the Civil Rights Movement. This new monument underscores our nation’s need to keep exposing and acknowledging the truth today.

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris

were joined at the ceremony by members of Emmett Till’s family, including his cousin, Reverend Wheeler Parker, Jr. The cousins lived next door to each other in Chicago and were best friends, and during that summer break Wheeler and Emmett traveled together to spend a two-week visit with relatives near Money, Mississippi.

Wheeler was with Emmett at Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market the day Carolyn Bryant falsely said Emmett grabbed and propositioned her after buying two cents’ worth of bubble gum, and he was in the room four nights later when Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam came to their family’s house, dragged Emmett out of bed at gunpoint, and drove off with him.

As he spoke at the ceremony honoring his cousin, Rev. Wheeler Parker, Jr. said:

“When I sat with my family on the night of terror, when Emmett Till, our beloved ‘Bobo,’ was taken from us, taken to be tortured and brutally murdered—back then, when I was overwhelmed with terror and fear of certain death in the darkness of a thousand mid-

smile, and said, “That’s the benefit of getting old and not dying. Just exercise more, and it will all go away.”

As we drove home, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage looked over at me and said, “Well, old man, what did the doctor have to say?”

“He told me,” I said with a rather sour smirk, “that I need to eat more Apple Fritters each day. That will take away the pain in my bones.”

Looking at me and not smiling, she said, “For your information, we will have broccoli for lunch today.”

Looking at her, I sweetly said, “Why don’t we go out for lunch today? We can go to the restaurant of your choice.”

She agreed, and we both smiled, and she pulled up at her favorite restaurant.

We got seated, ordered our lunch, and had a wonderful time together. The only prob-

lem with eating out with her is she always orders broccoli.

We were finished eating, and the waitress brought our check. I smiled at her and reached into my pocket for my wallet, and much to my dismay, it was not there. I forgot my wallet.

Just when you think you’ve got a problem solved, it turns out quite different.

“My dear,” I said as sweetly as possible, “I forgot my wallet. Do you mind paying for lunch today?”

That was the most expensive lunch I’ve ever had.

As I was thinking about this I couldn’t help but remember what David said. “When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long” (Psalm 32:3).

What I take away from this is, when I keep silent about my age there other things that are going to give away my secret.

nights, in a pitch-black house on what some have called Dark Fear Road, back then in the darkness, I could never imagine a moment like this: standing in the light of wisdom, grace, and deliverance.”

Rev. Parker is imagining a powerful moment for all of us. The first site in the National Monument, the Graball Landing river site, is in the area along the Tallahatchie River near Glendora, Mississippi where Emmett’s mutilated body was recovered. A memorial sign installed nearby in 2008 was destroyed and two replacements were repeatedly riddled with bullets and vandalized over the next decade, and these contemporary acts of white supremacy and hatred are also exposed here.

The second site is the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, where as many as 125,000 people attended Emmett Till’s visitation and funeral services, documented in the searing photographs and news coverage.

The third is the Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi, where Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were tried in

a segregated courtroom and acquitted by an all-white jury after just over an hour of deliberation.

Months later they both admitted their guilt in a paid magazine interview. No one was held accountable for Emmett Till’s murder, but together these three sites are a public, permanent reminder that the truth could not be buried.

During a week when the Florida State Board of Education approved new public school curriculum standards to teach children that enslaved people received a “personal benefit” from slavery, this message about the truth was not lost on anyone at the ceremony.

President Biden said: “At a time when there are those who seek to ban books, bury history, we’re making it clear—crystal, crystal clear—while darkness and denialism can hide much, they erase nothing. They can hide, but they erase nothing. We can’t just choose to learn what we want to know. We have to learn what we should know. We should know about our country. We should know everything: the good, the bad, the truth of who we are as a nation. That’s what great nations do . . . Only with truth comes healing, justice, repair, and another step forward toward forming a more perfect union.”

Rams Training Camp: Donald has a lot to prove

- In 2022, Aaron Donald recorded the lowest sack total of his illustrious career. In 11 games, Donald only registered five sacks. Last season was the first time since 2016 that Donald failed to reach double-digits in sacks.

IN previous seasons, the Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman managed to record sack totals of 12.5 in 2021, 13.5 in 2020, 12.5 in 2019, 20.5 in 2018, and 11 takedowns in 2017. Last season was not the Donald didn’t meet his standard of dominance..It felt more like an abbreviation rather than the norm for Donald.

So naturally, Donald feels some kind of way in regards to going out in training camp and re-establish himself as the best defensive lineman in the NFL. In speaking to reporters for the first time in training camp, Donald, a threetime Defensive

Player of the Year, feels like he has something to prove.

“I’ve got a lot to prove,” Donald said. “I didn’t have the season I wanted, obviously coming off of an injury and things like

that. I feel like to get to where you need to be, it’s like starting over from scratch again. It’s a brand new year. Last year was last year, but there’s a little fire lit into me.

“I got a little motivation towards that to push me to feel like I’m back on ground one. So I’m trying to get back to where I want to be as a player, as a teammate, as a team overall, and that’s been kind of pushing me a little bit.”

Durability has been one of Donald’s best attributes since he came into the league in 2014. Up until last season in which he missed six games due to an ankle injury, Donald had played in every single game over nine seasons except for two contests in 2014. That’s a pretty remarkable feat considering the physicality of the position Donald plays.

“It’s the first time I ever got injured, so it’s different,” Donald said about coming into training camp following his injury. “This offseason I made sure that I was healthy. I made sure I was able to do all the cutting I needed to do. I didn’t

want to be limited to anything.

“I feel good, I feel normal. It’s just more I haven’t played football in a while so it’s just reaction things, little things that you pick up from just playing the game and it’s coming back. I felt better today than I did yesterday and the day before, so it’s getting to where it needs to be.”

Going into his 10th season, Donald will have to suit up with a lot of new names and faces around him. Familiar faces like Greg Gaines, A’Shawn Robinson, Justin Hollins, Leonard Floyd, and Bobby Wagner will no longer be sitting in the trenches doing battle alongside Donald against opposing offensive linemen.

Those players have been replaced by the likes of Byron Young, Kobie Turner, Marquise Copeland, Nick Hampton, and Bobby Brown III. Donald acknowledges that this is something that he has to get used to.

“It’s really different,” Donald said.“Obviously not having the guys you had that had the experience and playing with guys for the past couple years and now it’s like brand new. So

just getting the feel for guys, trying to get games running the right way and communication things. It’s a process, but that’s what camp is for.”

So what’s the motivation for Donald going into training camp this season? There are a couple of things. For one, the season after they won the Super Bowl, the Rams nosedived into a 5-12 season in 2022. Donald himself was not at the top of his game.

With all of that going on, the Rams cleaned house and brought in a ton of new faces with core veterans like Donald, quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and offensive tackle Rob Havenstein being the anchors of the team’s new look. The motivation for Donald and the Rams is to shake off the tailspin they experienced last season and put their best football forward, Donald said.

“Right now we are just trying to get back on top,” Donald remarked. “Obviously, we didn’t have a [the] season we wanted as a team last year. Now you’re kind of looked over as a team, so I feel like we have got something to prove. So that’s the motivation right there.”

er individuals were charged with conspiracy to commit election fraud. Galvan was also charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with attempted bribery with an intent to influence an election. In a 2021 released statement, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon had this to say about the matter.

“Elections are the cornerstone of our democratic nation. We must do everything in our power to protect the integrity of the electorate process and to ensure that elections are free and fair,” District Attorney Gascón said. “The

people of Los Angeles County expect and deserve a government that is free of political corruption at every level.”

Since then the drama has continued. The judge overseeing the election case was reassigned earlier this year, according to 2Urban Girls. And with other incidents being unveiled over the last few months, that has given rise to supporters of Galvan to unleash their pent-up frustrations at City Council meetings.

During the July 18 council meeting several residents made some pointed remarks about Spicer and the 2021

election during the public comments portion of the meeting, flat out suggesting the councilman of not being legitimately elected into office.

The remarks were so disparaging that Spicer eventually felt compelled to say something.

“For clarity purposes, I won my election three times-primary, general and I had to go to court to prove voter fraud,” Spicer said. “A lot of people complain about voter fraud in the city of Compton. I’m the only one that actually proved it in a court of law. That is the reason why I am here today.”

ugly parts of our past; those who attempt to teach that enslaved people benefitted from slavery; those who insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, who

try to divide our nation with unnecessary debates. Let us not be seduced into believing that somehow we will be better if we forget. We will

be better if we remember. We will be stronger if we remember. Because we all here know: It is only by understanding and learning from

our past that we can continue to work together to build a better future.”

The truth must be brought to light.

“I’m proud of the support I’ve been shown since en-

tering this race,” Richardson commented. “Today’s fundraising announcement shows that I have wide range of support from residents, business owners, and organizations. I plan to continue to raise the resources needed to run a competitive and effective campaign to ensure that my message reaches voters.”

A recent survey of likely March 2024 primary voters in California’s 35th State Senate District conducted by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3 Research) shows former Congresswoman Laura Richardson to be a strong contender for this open seat.

“The survey found Richardson’s favorability rating to be similar to or better than most current and former

elected officials with experience representing communities within the 35th Senate District and better than candidates expressing interest but have not served higher than the local office,” said John Fairbanks.

Richardson was born in Los Angeles and lives in San Pedro. She was raised by a single mother after her parents divorced when she was two. Her mother was a member of the Teamsters and remains a retiree today. Laura graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned her MBA from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.

Richardson served on the Long Beach City Council

from 2000 to 2006, and while serving in the Assembly in 2007 after the untimely passing of Congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald, she was elected to the House of Representatives, representing District 37, where she served three terms before redistricting significantly altered California’s congressional map, resulting in the loss of African American representation for the first time in decades.

Senate District 35 includes the Los Angeles County communities of LAX, Inglewood, Compton, Carson, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Wilmington, San Pedro, and unincorporated communities of East and West Rancho Dominguez, Lennox, West Athens, Westmont, and Willowbrook.

“We are incredibly thankful for your support, and we’re eager to see the impact that this project will have on our students and our community. Together, we are

planting the seeds for a more sustainable and educated future. Thank you, The Home Depot, for empowering our district, our students, and our future.”

According to an official from The Home Depot, this

was one of the largest grants awarded in the Western region to date. The Team Depot volunteers were employees from various local The Home Depot stores including Compton, Paramount, Gardena, Torrance, and Hawthorne.

Some were even Compton residents and former CUSD students. In fact, one The Home Depot employee, Keishon White, was part of Compton Early College High School’s first graduating class, and recently graduated from UCLA.

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 855 238-5118 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan. com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-23-954798-AB. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 or visit this internet website www.ndscorp.com/ sales, using the file number assigned to this

case 23-30096-BACA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. AFN4790836 07/18/2023, 07/25/2023, 08/01/2023

Attorney for petitioner:

Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ is fun and scary

After nearly 20 years moviegoers and Disney enjoyers alike get to witness the brand-new reboot of one of Disney’s most well-known rides ‘The Haunted Mansion’. To get some things clear it is not a catch up of the previous film from 2003 starring Eddie Murphy or part of an extended storyline.

IT is simply its own story which is a great idea for a reboot. The approach of the newer film allows both versions to be their own self without allowing one to overshadow the other leaving them to have their own charm.

Just focusing on the 2023 version the audience starts the movie meeting Ben Matthias who was previously an engineer interested in the paranormal but lost that interest after the

death of his wife. Sooner or later about a few years later we meet a mother and her son (Gabbie and Travis) who arrive at their new home, a 19th century gothic style mansion located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The only issue is when they arrive, they are welcomed with presently active and intimidating spirits, almost too many to count. Due to these events they go searching for a team of experts to help make their mansion a home. First recruit

was Father Kent who convinces and pushes Ben to join and to eventually start his grieving process properly.

They do their searching and find Harriet as a medium that way there is communication between the living and the dead and lastly Professor Bruce Davis a historian that way they know what happened in the mansion and how to help let these spirits be at peace.

While there were new

‘Oppenheimer’ lives up to its billing

The other half of this summer’s “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, “Oppenheimer” did so well in its second weekend that it gets a full review all its own. Sure, it came in a distant second to “Barbie” both weekends, but with an estimated $174 million at the domestic box office thus far, it’s more than on pace to become the biggest movie of all time to never win a weekend. The unofficial, counterintuitive, and highly-unusual “Barbenheimer” marketing campaign (“contrast the glittery comedy with a drama about the atomic bomb”) certainly helped this film’s box office, but it’s a strong enough movie that I’d like to think that it could have been a hit even without its unlikely pink ally. Cillian Murphy (who I could tell from the first publicity photo was perfect, Oscar-ready casting) stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man credited as the “father of the atomic bomb.” Much like

“The Social Network,” the film intercuts its usually-linear historical portion with the framing device of two hearings, one involving Oppenheimer himself, the other involving nemesis Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.), chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. As Strauss is not a scientist himself, he and Oppenheimer never get along well professionally, but after a perceived derogatory comment made toward Albert Einstein (Tom Conti), he has it in for Oppenheimer personally.

Much of the movie is standard biopic territory: we follow Oppenheimer from his days at Cambridge getting advice from Niels Bohr (Kenneth Branaugh) to his role as director of The Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the bomb was designed and built. In his personal life, Robert takes up a relationship with the married Kitty (Emily Blunt) while having an affair with Communist sympathizer

Jean (Florence Pugh). Oppenheimer and his colleagues go through the expected setbacks and successes, culminating in a high-stakes demonstration and one of the most massive explosions ever put on film. Soon the bomb is taken away from the scientists and used in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, and Oppenheimer has to forever live with the knowledge that he played an integral role in arguably the most devastating event in human history.

There’s surprisingly little violence in the film, outside of an offscreen suicide and a sequence where Oppenheimer imagines the effects of the bomb. There isn’t even that much “action,” really, unless you count carefully-orchestrated test explosions. But make no mistake, this is one of the most intense films of the year. Sure, some of it has to do with the urgency of the arms race and the stakes involved, but it’s more than that. Direc-

them just meeting one another not that long beforehand there was always a sense of support and encouragement between them, something you do not see very often.

At one particular point each main character has a down moment with one of the other characters not that far behind to help them deal with their own personal demons while also trying to cast the literal bully of all ghosts out.

main human characters we luckily got to see plenty of familiar faces from the ride including Eleanor Gracey, the hatbox ghost played by Jared Leto, Madame Leota who was portrayed by iconic scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis.

Something that stuck out to me about this particular batch of mortals is how although they are not biological families besides Gabbie and Travis there is a found family trope in this very film. Despite

The balance of goodness with these mortals developing a new familial relationship and the terrors of their personal fears and the spooks from mainly Crump himself is what made this film so engaging.

Arguably, I believe what also stood out in this film was the scare factor. I, including other audience members, found ourselves jump scared and kept on our toes. Overall, the movie is a great representation of what PG-13 is. It has the factor where it can be for a broad audience children and horror loving adults can have a good time.

tor Christopher Nolan knows how to expertly craft a thriller, and his tight pacing and editing will make your heart pound whether it’s bombs or tempers that are flaring.

I’ll be honest, a lot about “Oppenheimer” went over my head, from science to politics to legalese to history. And even if I did know more about all these subjects, I still might get overwhelmed by the film’s crowded cast and all the time-jumping. Yet there was never any doubt that what was happening was of great importance, whether to

world powers or the world of one. And it’s all done with Nolan’s trademark crispness. The bomb-building and hearings may not be pretty or “sleek” necessarily, but you’ll get the impression that these things cannot be done by anyone other than the people doing them. If you’re looking for a “party” movie where everyone will find something to enjoy while they socialize and pay minimal attention, then “Barbie” is the way to go there. But if you’re ready to be transfixed by a film that will occasionally blow you to the back of your seat (seriously, this is the time to spring for a premium theater experience like IMAX), then “Oppenheimer” is the movie of the summer, maybe the year.

Grade: B

“Oppenheimer” is rated R for some sexuality, nudity, and language. Its running time is an even 180 minutes, in a precision that seems only fitting.
