Lynwood STUDENTS INSPIRED BY EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE

The Girl Empowerment Conference focused on female students to not be afraid to break barriers

LYNWOOD, CA.¬ – Lynwood

Unified School District’s female students were empowered to push boundaries and pursue their dreams during the district’s inaugural Girl Empowerment Conference on March 30, when students participated in workshops, received advice from alumni and connected with women who have broken cultural barriers.

“ YOU’RE never going to stop being afraid, but it’s what you do even when you’re afraid that makes a huge difference,” said keynote speaker and LAX Police Captain Karla Rodriguez, who shared her struggles growing up as an immigrant and defying cultural expectations as a captain charged with protecting the fourth busiest airport in the world and second busiest in the United States.

The students were in town to advocate for the Dream Act, pell grants, and the Reauthorization of Higher Education Act in Washington D.C.

“If I was able to get from where you are now to where I am today, you can do the same,” she said.

and Firebaugh high schools and aimed to inspire girls from Hosler and Cesar Chavez middle schools to break barriers and conquer their fears.

Middle school girls heard from speakers like Giselle Carrillo, who, in 2017, founded Los Courage Camps, which has provided hundreds of Los Angeles-area youths with the opportunity to learn the foundations of surfing.

“This was an opportunity to teach other children how to tap into something – courage,” Carrillo said. “We started to really see something light up inside of them after just one day in the ocean. Surfing has taught me that it is okay to live a life that brings you joy.”

Firebaugh High School alumna and founder of Speaking4Change Denise Gomez shared her inspiring story about her long battle with mental health, as well as her dedication to building healthy and strong communities that provide equal opportunities for success.

During the event, students engaged in breakout discussions, where they explored how to maintain a healthy mindset, avoid toxic friendships and stay motivated as they advance in their academic journeys.

After a lively lunch session, students also participated in a wide variety of workshops, including a vision board station, friendship bracelet crafts, painting and more, providing students with an opportunity to foster creativity and explore self-expression. Students also received an empowerment journal to help them document their progress and set goals.

“Empowering all students – but especially our female students – to believe in their own potential to achieve greatness is critical for our District in helping to develop tomorrow’s leaders,” Superintendent Gudiel Crosthwaite, Ph.D. said. “I want to thank our partners and speakers for sharing their stories, helping our young female students to feel empowered, confident and equipped to achieve their dreams.”

The event was supported by the Lynwood Partners Education Foundation and Lynwood Alumni Association.

California to advocate on behalf of their fellow students for increased federal investment in higher education.

Five members of Compton College’s Associated Student Government met with 350 fellow student leaders from across the country.

“The contribution of Compton College at the ASACC National Student Advocacy Conference was important for the students at their college,” said Phil Clegg, executive director of ASACC. “The Dream Act, Pell Grants, America’s College, and Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act are critical issues concerning community college students and ensuring they have the resources needed to fulfill their educational goals.”

Compton College Associated Student Government members advocated for key issues by meeting with the offices of Congressmember Robert Garcia and Representative Maxine Waters, as well as visiting the Hart Senate Office Building. During these visits, the student advocates discussed the importance of sustaining and increasing the Pell Grant and making it available yearround, and reauthorizing the law that gov-

EntreNous, the home of Compton YouthBuild, opened its doors in 2013 and enrolls on average 150 members full-time each year. Young people ages 16-24+ from economically distressed communities may earn an accredited high school diploma and enroll in two distinct apprenticeship readiness training programs (construction/trades and hospitality/culinary arts) to complete industry-recognized credentials.

EntreNous supports young people to successfully move towards achieving their personal/professional goals including the completion of the secondary program and post-secondary courses. Emphasis is placed on civic engagement and service to the community. Having overcome personal challenges, obstacles, and barriers, graduates of this program have developed a holistic understanding of themselves and their life goals, of what they want to learn, how to go about learning, and how to apply this learning to their daily lives. With the current battle over budget, spending and modifications to student financial aid programs, the student advocacy is timely. Students also encouraged Congress to pass the bipartisan Dream Act, providing a path to citizenship for children who were brought here by their families.

“I am so proud to talk about the opportunities Compton College offers, such as sending a student-led delegation to serve as a voice for our student population,” said Compton College Associated Student Government President Paul Medina, who attended the conference. “Having the support from the college made it possible for student government leaders to travel to Washington D.C. for this conference and advocate to members of Congress regarding programs and services pivotal for the success of community college students. Programs and services such as the increase of financial aid awards through the Pell Grants; a pathway for citizenship for undocumented, DACA, and dreamer students; additional funding for workforce and career education programs; and support for resources and

transfer pathways to HBCU and HSI campuses, which help in providing an equitable education.”

In addition to Medina, Compton College’s Associated Student Government delegation included Commissioner of Clubs & Organizations Sandra Martinez, Commissioner of Public Relations Tameira Franklin, and Compton Community College District Student Trustee Kendra Carnes.

The meetings and workshops held at the conference prepared the students for their meetings with members of Congress or their staff. Highlights of the conference included speakers from ForCollegeForLife, Inc. and Congressional Management Foundation.

Brad Fitch from the Congressional Management Foundation spoke to the group about ways they can enhance their grassroots organizing. Jasmine Williams spoke to student leaders about their campus roles and fulfilling the responsibilities of the positions they hold. Evan Austin and Casey Cornelius opened and concluded the conference by discussing strategies to improve leadership among students and combat apathy.

Public should beware of threat-based impersonation scams

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) is providing a warning for the public about scammers. Scammers will call residents and tell them they are LASD personnel (deputy, sergeant, detective, etc.) and demand payment of a fine for failing to respond to a jury duty summons or an outstanding warrant.

IN fear of being arrested, victims are scammed into making payments in the form of gift cards, Bitcoin, or pre-paid credit cards. The scammers use a fraudulent sense of emergency and pressure to coerce hard-earned money from unsuspecting people, many of them elderly. Often times, the scammers will use the names of real LASD personnel.

If you receive a demand for payment by telephone, email or other means of communication, to be made

in any form for any reason, from someone claiming to be a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department employee, do not comply. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel will never ask for payment over the phone or by email.

If you believe you were a victim of this type of crime, contact your local law enforcement agency and report the incident. Here are some tips to identify a potential threatbased impersonation scam and how to prevent yourself from falling prey to this scam or similar scams:

TACTICS:

• Scammers pretend to be from a government or law enforcement agency.

• They threaten victims with arrest for outstanding warrants or other legal issue.

• They pressure victims to purchase various types of gift/pre-paid cards or instruct them to purchase Bitcoin.

• Once a victim makes the purchase, the scammer instructs them to read the gift card numbers or bitcoin key over the phone.

• Once the scammer is satisfied, and they received the necessary information, the line is disconnected.

• Financial transactions with LASD are handled at patrol stations, court houses and custody facilities.

PREVENTION METHODS:

• If you are unsure if a call or email is real, verify the identity of the contact through an independent source, such as a phone book or online search. Do not use the contact details provided by the caller or in the message they sent.

• Do not feel pressured by a threatening caller. Hang up and verify their story.

• Never send money, give bank account, credit card or personal information such as date of birth or social security numbers to anyone you do not know or trust.

• A government agency or trusted business will never ask for payment by unconventional methods, such as gift or store cards, Apple gift cards, wire transfers, or Bitcoin.

If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 Tips” Mobile APP or “P3 Mobile” for the hearing impaired on Google play or the App Store, or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.

TO START parents Tips

Black for discussions about sex and healthy practices

Discussing sex can be difficult between most parents and their emerging adults. If your family is part of a Black community, openly discussing sexual health is nearly impossible. More now than ever, this needs to change.

APRIL is Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Awareness Month, which provides an opportunity to raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections and their impact on our lives while ensuring everyone has the tools and knowledge for prevention, testing, and treatment.

Transgenerational racial trauma, hyper-sexualized portrayals of Black people, and the devaluation of Black bodies as commodities have led to deep-rooted anxiety for Black parents when discussing sex. Most of our sex talks revolve around warnings “Don’t have (or think about) sex until marriage!” “Don’t come home pregnant!” or “Don’t get anyone pregnant!” Sex is part of life, and not talking about it doesn’t

make it suddenly disappear. We do a disservice to youth in Black communities by not providing a safe space for sincere discussions related to sex and sexuality.

In Los Angeles County, data from the Public Health Department for December 2021 to November 2022 shows that those aged 18-29 comprise 30% of reported syphilis cases, 45% of gonorrhea cases, and 33% of HIV cases. Although comprising only 8% of Los Angeles County’s population, Blacks have been disproportionately affected by STIs, including 20% of syphilis cases, 19% of gonorrhea cases, and 17% of HIV cases as of November 2022. Keep in mind that STIs could be transmitted during sex or from skinto-skin contact.

estly about sex shouldn’t be taboo.

4. Educate yourself. You don’t have to know the answer to every question but use honesty and transparency as guidelines to become their “go-to” to find the correct answers together.

5. Listen & validate. Listening without judgment will help youth feel more comfortable coming to their parents with questions. Before offering insights or advice, thank them for sharing with you.

STI Awareness Month is a prime opportunity for all parents to use these tips with the young adults in their lives; not only could it help them delay

sex, but it also increases the likelihood of using condoms which decreases STIs.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND 30-DAY PUBLIC REVIEW PERIOD FOR THE CITY OF COMPTON

2023-2024 ACTION PLAN AND SUBSTANTIAL AMENDMENT TO THE 2021-2022 AND 2022-2023 ACTION PLANS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Compton has prepared its draft 2023-2024 Action Plan (“Action Plan”) and Substantial Amendment to the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Actions Plans (“Substantial Amendment”). Under Federal Regulations at 24 CFR 91.105, the draft Action Plan and Substantial Amendment will be available for public review and comment for a period of no less than 30 days beginning April 7,2023 and ending May 9, 2023.

NOTICE IS HEREBY FURTHER GIVEN that the Action Plan and Substantial Amendment will be presented to the City Council for approval on the following date:

DATE: May 9, 2023

TIME: 5:35 p.m.

More Black youth are getting tested and receiving education, which are great ways to prevent the spread of STIs in our communities. The Black Health Initiative of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles (PPLA) believes in fostering strong family dynamics through fact-based health education programs and classes, reaching nearly 50,000 women, men, and young adults each year. However, as a PPLA educator, I recommend that Black families normalize conversations about sex and sexual health so that our young people know how to protect themselves.

Here are five tips for parents to start these conversations with their families about sex and healthy practices:

1. Talk early: Setting the groundwork early to discuss sexual attraction, gender identity, and personal boundaries helps young adults become more open about sex and sexual relationships.

2. Talk often: Breaking this topic down into small, frequent discussions can make this conversation easier to facilitate conversations about sex and sexual relationships.

3. Keep it together: Don’t be shocked by anything asked or discussed. Empowering young people to talk openly and hon-

At this meeting, the City Council will receive public comment on the draft Action Plan and Substantial Amendment that will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

BACKGROUND

The City is an entitlement community that participates in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) programs which require the submittal of a Five-Year Consolidated Plan as part of the City’s grant application to HUD which was approved and submitted to HUD in May 2020. The plan establishes a framework of housing, community, and economic development priorities for the City’s CDBG and HOME programs over the next five years. The Action Plan represents the fourth year of the 2020-2024 Five-Year Consolidated Plan. The Action Plan will appropriate CDBG and HOME funds to specific programs and projects for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The City’s annual allocations are $1,396,450 and $582,201 in CDBG and HOME funds, respectively, for the 2023-2024 fiscal year to implement programs and projects that benefit low- and moderate-income residents.

Since the adoption of the City’s 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Action Plans, the City has identified two (2) activities that it wishes to cancel totaling $20,000 to be reprogrammed in the 2023-2024 Action Plan. To approve this proposed change, a public hearing and public review period is required.

A ripe time

Defense Fund

This special holy season this year, as many people are observing Ramadan, Passover, and Easter during the same week, is also fifty-five years to the week after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. It is as useful as ever right now to return to his last Sunday sermon, delivered at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on March 31, 1968.

Dr. KING said its title, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution,” was based on the old story of Rip Van Winkle, who fell asleep for twenty years and slept right through the American Revolution—and he warned us that during upheaval in our own times we must not do the same.

As Dr. King spoke about the freedom revolution he saw happening around the world and the urgent need for America to finally end racial injustice, he addressed “the myth of time.” This was the idea that

only the passage of time would ultimately solve this, and Black people and their allies simply needed to be patient. Dr. King said there is an answer to this myth: “It is that time is neutral. It can be used whether constructively or destructively. And I am sorry to say this morning that I am absolutely convinced that the forces of ill will in our nation, the extreme rightists of our nation—the people on the wrong side— have used time much more effectively than the forces of goodwill.”

He continued: “It may well be that we will have to repent in this generation, not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say, ‘Wait on time.’ Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. So we must help time and realize that the time is always ripe to do right.”

He went to hell because he allowed his brother to become invisible . . . And this can happen to America, the richest nation in the world

King shared the parable of the rich man Dives, who went to hell, and the poor, sick man Lazarus, who laid outside Dives’ gate hoping for crumbs from his table. Dr. King said Dives didn’t go to hell because he was rich, but instead of realizing that his wealth was his opportunity to bridge the gulf between them, Dives walked by Lazarus every day and never really saw him: “He went to hell because he allowed his brother to become invisible . . . And this can happen to America, the richest nation in the world.”

Calling for the Poor People’s Campaign that would soon come to Washington, Dr. King added: “This is America’s opportunity to help bridge the gulf between the haves and the have-nots. The question is whether America will do it. There is nothing new about poverty. What is new is that we now have the techniques and the resources to get rid of poverty. The real question is whether we have the will . . . Ultimately a great nation is a compassionate nation. America has not met its obligations and its responsibilities to the poor. One day we will have to stand before the God of history and we will talk in terms of things we’ve done.

we built gargantuan bridges to span the seas, we built gigantic buildings to kiss the skies. Yes, we made our submarines to penetrate oceanic depths. We brought into being many other things with our scientific and technological power. It seems that I can hear the God of history saying, ‘That was not enough! But I was hungry, and ye fed me not. I was naked, and ye clothed me not. I was devoid of a decent sanitary house to live in, and ye provided no shelter for me. And consequently, you cannot enter the kingdom of greatness. If ye do it unto the

least of these, my brethren, ye do it unto me.’ That’s the question facing America today.”

Dr. King did not live to see how our nation would answer the question. On the day he was assassinated he called his mother to tell her the title for his next Sunday sermon: “Why America May Go to Hell.” Fifty-five years later, we are still waiting. But the time is still ripe to choose the right answer. This holy season of renewal is also a ripe time for all of us to recommit to being the tireless, persistent, dedicated co-workers with God who will help.

Why Lamar Jackson’s case feels familiar and unsettling

(NNPA) - If your salary isn’t aligned with your resume, you might understand the predicament of star quarterback Lamar Jackson. If you’ve ever seen someone less accomplished than you earn more money, you could fathom the palpable frustration around Jackson’s situation.

NOW, when it’s time for Jackson, an elite, record-setting player, to cash in at one of the most visible positions in professional sports, matters have gone sideways for no good reason. The Baltimore Ravens, the team Jackson has spent his entire career with, placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on him. The contract guarantees him a one-year salary of $32.416 million.

Jackson currently can negotiate with other teams, but no club has stepped forward with a better deal as of this writing. Of course, that contract alone would be fantastic for regular folks like us. Who in their right mind would complain about getting paid $32 million to play a kid’s game?

But given the tortured history of the Black NFL quarterback, Jackson’s arc this offseason seems tinged with a familiar frustration: Despite notable exceptions like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, when it comes to opportunity and money, Black QBs are often given short shrift.

Why Lamar Jackson Deserves to Be

Among the Highest-Paid QBs Jackson wants a fully guaranteed, long-term deal like the one the Cleveland Browns gave Watson last year. Given his lofty accomplishments, Jackson deserves the difference-making money his peers have received.

That’s why he demanded a trade. The hard facts demonstrate that he deserves to be one of the top-paid players at his position:

• Since Jackson entered the NFL in 2018, he has led the Ravens to a 45-16 regular season record, winning 74 percent of the games he has started.

• In 2019, his second year in the league, Jackson became the second-youngest player in NFL history to be named NFL MVP.

• His 2019 season is among the 10 best statistical seasons ever for an NFL quarterback.

• Jackson also has the most 100yard rushing games by a QB ever.

• He has six games where he has 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing, twice as many as any other QB in NFL history.

• Injuries have cut short his last two seasons, but he has still managed to lead the Ravens to a 15-9 record.

Why Lesser Players Make More Than Him

While Jackson is arguably the best player to emerge from his 2018 draft class, he has earned less money than higher-drafted players who are now backups. Baker Mayfield, the top pick in that year’s draft, has amassed a 31-38 record, a winning percentage of 45 percent.

Even more egregious is that Mayfield, now signed to his fourth team as a potential backup, has earned almost $16 million more than Jackson throughout their careers before this year – $48.4 million to 32.7 million. Sam Darnold, set to play for his third team as a backup quarterback, has earned over $16 million more.

Mayfield and Darnold earned more than Jackson because they were drafted higher than him. Mayfield went 31 slots higher, and Darnold 29. Players are paid four-year deals based on their draft slot, so if you went number one like Mayfield, you would make more than a player drafted with the very last pick in the first round, like Jackson.

Why His Team is Not Playing Fair

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, selected 25 slots higher than Jackson and perhaps equally accomplished, makes substantially more than him and undoubtedly any player from the 2018 draft class. Instead of being pulled into “dog-eat-dog” salary negotiations, the Bills rewarded Allen with a six-year, $258 million contract extension in 2021. As a result, Allen got paid after his third year in the NFL.

“We’re committed to Josh. So that shows there’s no trepidation on our part of, oh, let’s just extend it a year or two or anything like that. We believe in Josh,” said Bills GM Brandon Beane then.

By the Ravens’ actions, they don’t seem to believe in Jackson, who enters his fifth year with no long-term deal or security. There are reports that Jackson has turned down multiple deals, including a three-year, fully guaranteed contract. There’s also a belief that because Jackson does not have an agent, it has impeded his ability to get a deal done.

On Sunday night, the Ravens signed the talented and flamboyant wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. to a one-year

contract, which Jackson seems to endorse. A reconciliation between the two sides could still occur. Yet, Jackson’s case echoes a truth that many of us are familiar with: No matter your resume or level of accomplishment, not everyone is willing to pay you your true worth.

Honoring the Bravery and Sacrifice of U.S. Service Members

(StatePoint) Every year, the United Service Organizations (USO) honors junior enlisted service members who have exhibited a commitment to protecting and serving others both on and off duty.

NOMINATED by their command leadership, the seven 2022 USO Service Members of the Year come from every military branch, and government officials, military leaders and USO supporters recently celebrated their achievements at the USO’s Annual Awards Dinner in Washington DC, hosted by Drew Carey.

“From defending an Air Base to rescuing civilians in accidents and fires, these honorees have performed inspiring acts of heroism, exemplifying the values of both the USO and the Armed Forces,” said USO president and CEO, J.D. Crouch II.

Here’s what to know about this year’s honorees:

• USO Soldier of the Year: Sergeant Erick Ceja was responsible for enabling the first U.S. Patriot missile engagement in combat in more than 19 years after incoming enemy ballistic missiles were identified as threats to the Al Dhafra Air Base. He analyzed the incoming threat, manned his battle station to ensure all launchers were operating properly and led his crew members through a perfect assumption drill. His actions ensured the safety of more than 3,500 service members and Department of Defense civilians.

• USO Airman of the Year: Without hesitation, Staff Sergeant Blake M. Metscher climbed through an overturned minivan to rescue a trapped family suffering from head trauma and lacerations in a multi-vehicle highway accident. His actions were key to the victims’ survival and lauded by first responders.

• USO Coast Guardsman

of the Year: Maritime Enforcement Specialist Second Class Jacob Flores saved three lives on an uncharted section of the Rio Grande River while operating a Response Boat early one morning. Upon spotting two women and an infant struggling with no life preservers, Flores dove in to pull them from the unforgiving river despite imminent personal danger. His actions ensured the safety of all three victims who received emergency medical care after the rescue.

• USO Marine of the Year: Corporal Alec T. Cruz saved the life of a fellow Marine after responding to a 911 call

requesting medical assistance for an unconscious service member. He quickly placed her in the recovery position, evaluated her condition, and initiated CPR when her breathing stopped and a pulse could no longer be located. Cruz revived the Marine after two cycles of CPR and provided lifesaving support while awaiting medical care.

• USO Sailor of the Year: While off duty near his home base in Virginia, Cryptologic Petty Officer Third Class Ty Knight responded to the sound of gunshots from a drive-by at a nearby intersection. He and another sailor took action, supported the

survivor at the scene and remained with them until emergency officials arrived.

• USO National Guardsman of the Year: Specialist Solomon Doss responded to a fire early one morning while on duty as a police officer in Alabama. He brought an elderly woman who had become incapacitated due to smoke inhalation to safety before the building was engulfed in flames. His composure and rapid response saved her life.

• USO Guardian of the Year: Sergeant Octavio Cesar Castruita was off duty when he witnessed a pregnant woman cry for help as a visibly distraught man attempted to

seize her vehicle. He ran to the woman’s aid, then detained the offender long enough for emergency responders to take him into police custody. Castruita’s rapid response saved the woman and her unborn child from harm.

“America’s service members put their lives on the line to keep us safe. That is why it’s so vital to honor their service and sacrifice,” says Crouch.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ has some hope

Last week, I wrote in my review of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” that I wasn’t really familiar with the “Dungeons & Dragons” game, and that may have affected my enjoyment of the movie. There will be no such disclaimer for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” My brother and I were introduced to video games through “Super Mario Bros.” and “Donkey Kong Country.”

Ieven tried playing the games myself sometimes, in between watching my brother play and actually win. So, while I’m not saying that I picked up on every Nintendo Easter Egg in this movie, there wasn’t much that caught me off-guard. And that’s kind of the problem,

nothing here surprised me.

Brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) aren’t having much luck with their plumbing business in Brooklyn, but their fortunes could change if they can stop a massive flood. They follow the sewer system to a mysterious pipe, which they enter, only to be whisked away to the world of the Mushroom Kingdom, where they get split up.

On top of being lost, stranded, and separated from his brother, Mario is trapped in a world that centers around his least-favorite pizza topping.

Mario makes fast friends with scrappy Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), who suggests they go to get help from Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). She’s dealing with a problem of her own: an impending invasion by the evil Bowser (Jack Black) and his army of Koopas. Bowser has taken Luigi hostage, so Mario and Peach have a shared interest in his defeat. Mario and Toad accompany Peach on a mission to recruit the Kong army to combat the Koopas.

King Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen) agrees to loan Peach

his army if Mario can defeat his son Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) in an arena battle. An alliance is soon formed, but Bowser isn’t far off.

Bowser, for his part, is probably the funniest character in the movie, thanks to three words: Jack Black singing. He has a diabolical plan to marry Peach, which he plans to do by force, but he also wants to do it the right way, with romance and attentiveness. “Adventure Time” had a storyline like this, and arguably, so did “Beauty and the Beast.” But this is the first

one to throw in a Jack Black piano ballad.

Black’s performance is one of the few memorable things about this movie, the rest is pretty much disposable. Every time the movie gives us a funny joke or action beat, a lame one will come along to even it out, and vice versa. Very little falls above (or below, to be fair) the level of “middling.”

I’ll say this: it was a good idea to make this movie animated. You just don’t get this brand of bright colors and bouncy movements in real life. Plus, I’ve seen portions of the yucky

1993 live-action movie. I haven’t seen it all the way through, but I think it’s safe to say that this is better.

By the time you read this, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will probably be the #1 movie of the year at the domestic box office, after a killer opening over Easter weekend. I’m glad that something is taking down the MCU mush that was “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” especially given the whole MODOK fiasco. But I’d also like to see this movie taken down by something that I can recommend.

This movie comes close to breaking the streak of the world never getting a single decent video game movie, it really does, but the jokes and action, not to mention some stiff voice performances (Taylor-Joy could have used a few more takes, so could Black when he’s delivering straight lines) just barely make this movie an underwater level.
