A new analysis by researchers at UCLA Health found that mortality rates of middle-aged Black Americans caused by the “deaths of despair” -- suicide, drug overdose and alcoholic liver disease – surpassed the rate of white Americans in 2022. Native Americans also had more than double the rate of both Black and white Americans that year.
THE results of the research, published in he journal JAMA Psychiatry, are the latest from UCLA Health to counter a nearly decade-old narrative that “deaths of despair” have primarily impacted white Americans.
The “deaths of despair” theory rose to prominence following a 2015 study that analyzed rising mid-life mortality, and decreasing life expectancy, in the U.S from 1999 to 2013.
The study became a focus of ongoing national discourse after it found white Americans had the highest mortality rates from these
causes at 72.15 per 100,000 people in 2013, which was two times that of Black Americans. The
Twenty-five counts of animal cruelty have been filed against Damian Wesley, owner of the non-profit Compton Animal Rescue
COMPTON, CA – Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón recently announced charges against Damian Wesley, owner of the 501(C)(3) non-profit organization Compton Animal Rescue, for animal cruelty and neglect of more than two dozen dogs.
“I am deeply saddened by the alleged animal cruelty committed by Mr. Wesley,” District Attorney Gascón said. “Our community relies on animal rescues to properly care for animals as they await their new homes.
The suffering endured by these innocent animals is incomprehensible and will not be tolerated in our community. Our office’s Animal Cruelty Section will work vigorously to seek justice in this matter.”

findings sparked a narrative that the rising death rates were primarily impacting less educated white Americans who were experiencing a perceived loss of economic and social status.
However, data for Native Americans were not included in the 2015 study or in the many follow-up analyses it triggered. Native American and Alaska Native populations was the highest at 241.7 per 100,000 people in 2022.
• · The rate of deaths of despair for Native American/Alaska Native populations has remained significantly higher than white Americans from 1999 to 2022.
• · Native American/Alaska Native had the highest mortality rates from suicide, alcoholic liver disease and drug overdose compared to Black and white Americans.
• · Deaths of despair in white Americans increased from 72.15 per 100,000 people in 2013 to 102.63 per 100,000
people in 2022.
Study coauthor Joseph Friedman, PhD, MPH, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said the results highlight the sharply rising rates of premature mortality related to mental health issues and substance use disorders with large racial and ethnic inequalities.
“The findings reinforce the notion that we need to invest in services that can address these issues and, ultimately, we need much more comprehensive access to low-barrier mental health care and substance use treatment in the U.S.,” Friedman said. “And we need to specifically make sure those treatments,
services and programs are implemented in a way that is accessible for communities of color and will actively work to address inequality.”
The data does not identify the circumstances behind these deaths, but Friedman said the increasing rates of deaths of despair largely relate to mental health and substance use disorders. Black Americans have been disproportionately affected by the drug overdose crisis. Other factors include differential access to health care and social services; an increasingly toxic illicit drug supply, namely fentanyl; and worsening economic insecurity.
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the 13 inductees in the Class of 2024 to be celebrated during this year’s Enshrinement festivities on August 16-17. The Class Announcement was made in Glendale, Ariz., the site of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Final Four.
PART of the Class of 2024 include Los Angeles Lakers greats. Michael Cooper, who served as the defensive stopper for the “Showtime” Lakers, finally made it into the Hall of Fame. The driving force behind the glam of the “Showtime” Lakers was Jerry West, who was recognized in his capacity as an executive. West is already in the Hall of Fame as a player.
“Without a shadow of doubt, the accomplishments of the 2024 class stand as a testament to unparalleled excellence,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “From showcasing unrivaled prowess on the courts and sidelines, spanning the high school, collegiate and professional ranks, to steering the course of basketball across an entire continent and to orchestrating a pair of dynasties, we are honored to pay tribute to these remarkable individuals alongside our esteemed award recipients.”
Cooper was named to eight NBA All-Defensive Teams, taking home First-Team accolades five times and winning Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1987. The former third-round draft pick (60th overall) out of the University of New Mexico spent his entire 12-year NBA career (1978-90) with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning five championships while routinely matching up with the opponent’s top shooter.
Following his playing career, Cooper entered the coaching ranks and earned WNBA Coach of the Year accolades in 2000 with the Los Angeles Sparks before winning back-to-back WNBA titles in 2001-02.
Here is a quick rundown on some of the accomplishments of Cooper and West.
MICHAEL COOPER –
The Class of 2024 will be enshrined during festivities in Springfield, Mass., the Birthplace of Basketball, as well as the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., on August 16-17. VIP packages and single-event tickets to the 2024 Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend are now available at hoophall.com/events/enshrinement-2024.
JERRY WEST – Previously enshrined as a player and as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic Team, West then went on to establish himself off the court as one of the most
successful executives in the sport’s history. West played a pivotal role as the architect of a pair of Los Angeles Lakers’ dynasties during the 1980s and 2000s, drafting key players like Magic Johnson and James Worthy, acquiring Kobe Bryant, signing free agent Shaquille O’Neal, and hiring head coach Phil Jackson. He totaled eight NBA championships in Los Angeles (1980, ‘82, ‘85, ‘87-88, 200002) and was named Executive of the Year twice (1995, 2004). Following his time in the Lakers’ front office (19792000), West served as GM of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2002-07 before earning two additional NBA championships as an executive with the Golden State Warriors (2015, ‘17). West is the first member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to be inducted as both a player and a contributor.

(StatePoint) Excessive heat. Emerging diseases. Severe storms and offseason illnesses. The environmental hazards associated with climate change threaten the physical and mental health of children and families — and can be a source of anxiety.
IT’S not just speculation. Communities are already impacted by such climate change effects as heat illness from dangerous temperatures, asthma hospitalizations from earlier and more severe pollen seasons, and trauma from severe wildfires and storms.
need to heal the planet, we are also talking about protecting our children’s ability to grow up in a safe, healthy world.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which has long recognized the impact of climate change on children, recently announced a new strategic initiative on environmental health and disaster readiness as a priority outlined by its Board of Directors for 2024. The AAP is recommending steps not only for communities and policy makers, but for families. As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, here are a few suggestions:
• Let kids know that their voices and advocacy can be powerful. Kids may be inspired to know that some of our most effective and powerful climate advocates today are children and youth. Support their engagement in local, state and national climate solutions.
• Reduce your own energy consumption and waste. Walking, biking, taking public transit, carpooling, and adopting a more plant-forward diet are all ways to help promote health for kids and the planet.

“When we talk with parents about what’s good for their kids, part of our job is connecting the dots between our changing climate and their children’s health,” said Dr. Samantha Ahdoot, a pediatrician. “All children need exercise, nutritious food and stable communities to thrive. But climate change poses new challenges for our patients, from struggling to breathe due to wildfire smoke to flooded homes from extreme rainfall events to extreme heat. When we talk about the
• Help your community adopt climate solutions. The AAP recommends a transition away from fossil fuels and toward clean, renewable energy like wind, solar and geothermal. Join forces with a local group to help bring clean energy to your school, town, state or even country. The AAP also recommends that communities incorporate healthy transportation systems, including public transit and walkable, bikeable pathways that allow children to be outdoors and active. Families can get involved at the local level to help create safe routes to walk and bike where you live.
• Show them you care. Let kids know that their adult caregivers—parents and pediatricians included—are committed to climate action solutions that protect their health and their world.
More information is available at HealthyChildren.org.
“What is healthy for the planet is also healthy for children,” Dr. Ahdoot said. “Pediatricians and parents share the same goal—to protect children’s health today, and ensure that they have a healthy future in adulthood. Protecting our planet helps preserve a healthy world that can provide all children the nutrition, play, and community stability that they need to thrive.”

students embraced girl power during the second annual Girl Empowerment Summit on March 28, where they heard from influential female community leaders and participated in breakout sessions and discussions designed to educate and inspire them to chase their dreams fearlessly.
THE Summit – organized by students from the Girl Empowerment Clubs at Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools – served as an inspiring conclusion to Women’s History Month celebrations across the
District, with Hosler and Cesar Chavez middle school students finding the courage to break barriers and carve a path toward powerful journeys.
“As women, we are told it’s always going to be more difficult to get things done, and that we will have to strive so much harder to accomplish our goals,”
Lynwood High School senior Alejandra Vega said. “It’s rewarding to collaborate with oth-
er girls and reassure one another that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
The day of leadership activities and networking kicked off with inspiring words from keynote speakers Celia Trevino-Goodman, an entrepreneur; Sandi Marques, a registered nurse at St. Francis Medical Center; Ana Bergeron, a registered nurse and advocate for nurses’ rights; Rita Soto, mayor
pro tem of the City of Lynwood; and Kendal Turner, executive vice president and chief financial officer of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.
“Don’t be worried about who or what you will lose,” said Turner, who shared her childhood experiences and emphasized the importance of resilience. “But look forward to the things you will gain.”
Similarly, Bergeron encouraged students to embrace opportunities for growth and build a community with like-minded women along the way.
“Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed,” she said. “There will always be people to help you if you want help, and there will always be people to teach you if you want to learn.”

Gone are the days of athlete reliance on corporations and media to promote their brand. Modern-day sports stars have everything they need to build their following at the touch of a button. Since the rise of multimedia and social media, self-promotion has taken over the sports world.
ATHLETICS is one of the capitals of entertainment across the entire globe. Major sports leagues like the NBA and NFL have done a fabulous job promoting superstar players to raise marketability. Over the last 25 years, we have seen a shift in the culture that has allowed athletes to enable themselves.
In the nineties, there was a basketball player named Michael Jordan. Jordan transcended the game in ways that no one had before. He was more significant than the team he played for or the league he played in. MJ’s greatness and persona on and off the court paved the way for the modern player to be more than just an athlete.
“I remember being in sixth grade and selling candy for at least two months so I could get a pair of the Air Jordan 4s… When you had a pair of Jordans in the 90s, you were the man… Just his off-the-court presence, everybody wanted to watch Michael Jordan. What was he doing? Chewing gum… Not only did people want to be like him on the court, but off the court, you wanted to be as close to him as you could (be),” said NBA champion Paul Pierce.
The success of the Jordan brand has led to the realization that the athlete is just as if not more marketable than the sport. Shaquille O’Neal became a renaissance man carving out a career as a rapper, actor, DJ, and NBA analyst to go
along with his many business endeavors. Lebron James has also created an empire of his own, dabbling in a little bit of everything off the court while being proclaimed a “player, GM, and coach” on the court. They have set the standard for the new age of athletes.
The past few decades have seen the introduction of new media like YouTube and Instagram. These multimedia websites have raised the climate of player empowerment to an alltime high.
“We Don’t need the big companies. They need us,” said Lavar Ball in an article he wrote for Slam Magazine in 2017.
Lavar famously launched his own apparel company Big Baller Brand for his three sons, Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo, in 2016. At the time, none
were NBA players, but due to highlight videos and extensive social media followings, the three young players were already stars. Lonzo became the first player to enter the NBA with a signature shoe.
Around the same time, we saw active players start their own podcasts. In 2017 Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye cohosted Road Trippin’, a show where they interviewed other members of the Cleveland Cavaliers while traveling to away games. JJ Reddick also started a podcast, The Old Man and the Three, where he interviewed the league’s top players while also telling stories about his playing career. Jefferson and Reddick have turned their behind-the-mic careers into big-time roles as ESPN analysts and are still releasing episodes of their shows.
“At the end of the day, I feel like that is what the fans want to hear from... no disrespect, shout out Stephen A, but they want to hear it from the athletes. They want to hear it from our side,” said Paul George on his new show, Podcast P. Fast forward to 2023, and most of the best sports content comes straight from the athlete’s perspective. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts started a baseball podcast, On Base, earlier this year.
Former All-NBA point guard Gilbert Arenas has a youtube show, Gil’s Arena, that has gained a lot of steam. Current NBA stud defenders Draymond Green and Patrick Beverly have also taken the podcast game to the next level, providing NBA analysis immediately after games at times on their programs, The Dray-
mond Green Show and The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone.
“The way I view my podcast is that I’m operating a business... So, it’s something that I take as seriously as I do basketball. And so, if I’m going to show up for the game, I show up for (the podcast), or it doesn’t work,” said Draymond in an interview with The Athletic.
Pat McAfee is another former athlete who built his brand through social media and Youtube. While playing in the NFL, McAfee was regarded as one of the most likable players in the league despite being a punter. He amassed a large Twitter following by being himself and interacting with fans.
McAfee was a great punter but has become a better sports show host. The Pat McAfee Show first aired in 2017 and has since become one of the most successful shows in sports media due to its personability and easy-going nature.
“Our show is what a lot of these suit folk now view as the future of daily sports talk... A few years back, none of these networks would even give me a meeting; now, we are the tip of the spear of what sports media needs to be in its next chapter,” McAfee said on his show after inking a partnership with ESPN last month. “I am honored that what the boys, our fans, and I have created has been studied, accepted, and ultimately appreciated by these multi-billion dollar networks with hundreds if not thousands of employees.”
According to RBC Wealth Management, the average athlete will retire from their sport before the age of 30. It can be challenging to grasp as a star athlete, but the reality is making money after their playing careers are over is essential. The more players can promote themselves and build their brand, the better, and there has never been a more opportunistic time to do so.

“We are grateful to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for their partnership in bringing this offender to justice,” said Marcia Mayeda, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control. “As animal lovers, we are always disturbed to discover these tragic cases. We remain vigilant in protecting animals from such abuse and neglect.”
On Jan. 3, 2024, search warrants were executed by the LA County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation and the LA County Department of Animal Care and Control at two locations in the city of Compton.
Each location was tied to Wesley and Compton Animal Rescue. Approximately 145 live animals and 12 animal carcasses were recovered during the search. The vast majority of animals were found to be severely underweight and suffering from various illnesses. Wesley is alleged to have seen the condition of 25 distressed animals and had time to act, but did not.
Wesley (dob 11/20/92) is charged with 25 felony counts of cruelty to an animal by neglect.

In the event tender other than cash is accepted the Trustee may withhold the issuance of the Trustee’s Deed until funds become available to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. Said sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed, advances thereunder, with interest as provided therein, and the unpaid principal balance of the Note secured by said Deed with interest thereon as provided in said Note, fees, charges and expenses of the trustee and the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-605-2445 for information regard-
ing the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site: www.servicelinkasap.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code, If you are an “eligible tenant buyer”, you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder”, you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-605-2445 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this internet website https://www.servicelinkasap.com, using the file number assigned to this case to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” of “eligible bidder”, you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is really a tale of two movies. No, not a Godzilla movie and a King Kong movie, rather a movie that follows the human characters and a movie that follows what the movie calls “Titans.”
The human portion is terrible, as is the human contribution to all American Godzilla movies (and I specify “American” because the human element in the recent Japanese installment “Godzilla Minus One” made it one of the best kaiju movies ever made). But the Titan portion makes for one of the best movies of the year.
LET’S get the human portion out of the way. Returning Kong expert Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) notices mysterious signals coming from Hollow Earth, the subterranean world where the giant ape lives. Her adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a confidant of Kong’s that communicates with him through sign language, picks up on a telepathic signal as well, one that tells her that Kong is in danger. The government allows Kong to pay a rare visit to the surface to have a tooth fixed by adventurous Dr. Trapper (Dan Stevens), provided he’s kept far away from atomic lizard Godzilla, who lives on Earth fighting dangerous “titans” and desperately wants to throw down with Kong in a battle that will undoubtedly cause massive damage. But the hurt tooth doesn’t explain the alarming signals. It’s time for Andrews to pay a visit to Hollow Earth, along with Jia, Trapper, and unofficial expert Bernie (Bryan Tyree Henry)
to find out just how worried mankind needs to be.
The humans spout exposition and exchange unfunny banter. The talented Hall is wasted on this stock scientist character. She brings no personality to the action scenes, and the few heartfelt moments with Jia are sincere, but unchallenging. I enjoyed the Trapper character at first, but the movie doesn’t know what to do with Stevens’ effortless charm. Bernie is just plain useless and annoying. The character is supposed to be “comic relief,” but I was far from relieved knowing that he was allowed to pollute this movie with his painful presence.
Balancing out the humans is Kong. He befriends a young ape (allegedly named “Suko,” though I don’t think anyone ever calls him that) that has been forced to work as a con artist by his master, the Skar King. The Skar King has laid claim to a world beneath even Hollow Earth, where other apes work as his slaves. His power comes from a crystal that allows him to control ice monster Shimo, against whom the apes have no chance. Kong challenges the Skar King for control of his empire, and the battle comes to the surface, where Kong has to recruit Godzilla to fight Shimo if there’s any hope of bringing the villains down. But Kong
and Godzilla aren’t over their own differences yet. Will the “x” in the film’s title come to mean “vs.” or “&”? As with many things in life, the answer lies with Mothra.
Almost all of Kong and Godzilla’s scenes play out without human interference, and in fact do not involve dialogue. The fact that the movie can communicate so much without words is highly impressive. As are the anatomy-smashing creature-on-creature action scenes, provided you can turn a blind eye to collateral damage.
It’s such a shame that there’s so much to detract from what “Godzilla x Kong:
The New Empire” does right. I can completely understand how some viewers and critics think that the humans are a deal-breaker for this movie as a whole. But just because I understand doesn’t mean I agree. I think that the creatures, especially Kong, successfully offset the humans. It’s close, but Godzilla and Kong manage to not be completely undermined in their own movie.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is rated PG-13 for creature violence and action. Its running time is 115 minutes. Contact
