What comes next? ¿Qué viene después?
It’s been an interesting, if not adventurous couple of months. The world has been rocked and changed in considerable ways, with more change certainly in store. Sadly, like everyone everywhere in the world, we have lost some beloved friends. Our hearts and prayers go out to their families—our Casa de Campo community has lost some incredible people and we will miss them greatly. While these tough times have kept us isolated, scared, stressed, and saddened, the good news is that Casa de Campo remains the epitome of that paradise—secluded and safe. For those lucky enough to quarantine themselves here, the availability of ample social distancing, picturesque views, and nature made things a very unique time to spend in Casa, despite the unusual lack of activities and gatherings.

For the most part, we have remained healthy and may have even had the chance to catch up on some work, reading, or lounging. We look forward to seeing—and embracing—friends and family again. We look forward to sharing stories, breaking bread, and creating memories together, what Casa de Campo is all about. I, for one, have been away from my Casa family for too long and look forward to seeing everyone very soon. I look forward to a breathtaking game of golf at sunset with a few close friends. I dream of dinner overlooking the Chavon river and a Sunday journey to Palmilla with the family. Whatever comes next for you, we look forward to helping you make your time in Casa de Campo so much better and live each day to the fullest. Carpe diem! See you soon! Han sido un par de meses interesantes. El mundo ha sido sacudido y cambiado de manera considerable, y más cambios seguramente nos esperan. Lamentablemente, como todos en todo el mundo, hemos perdido algunos amigos queridos. Nuestros corazones y oraciones están con sus familias: nuestra comunidad de Casa de Campo ha perdido a algunas personas increíbles y los extrañaremos mucho. Si bien estos tiempos difíciles nos han mantenido aislados, asustados, estresados y entristecidos, la buena noticia es que Casa de Campo sigue siendo el epítome de ese paraíso, aislado y seguro. Para aquellos que tuvieron la suerte de ponerse en cuarentena aquí, la disponibilidad de un amplio distanciamiento social, vistas pintorescas y la naturaleza hicieron de las cosas un momento único para pasar en Casa, a pesar de la inusual falta de actividades y reuniones. En su mayor parte, nos hemos mantenido saludables e incluso hemos tenido la oportunidad de ponernos al día con algo de trabajo, lectura o descanso. Esperamos ver, y abrazar, amigos y familiares nuevamente. Esperamos compartir historias, partir el pan y crear recuerdos juntos; todo eso que representa Casa de Campo. Yo, por mi parte, he estado lejos de mi Casa family durante demasiado tiempo y espero verlos a todos muy pronto. Espero disfrutar de un impresionante juego de golf al atardecer con algunos amigos cercanos. Sueño con una cena con vistas al río Chavón y un viaje dominguero a Palmilla con la familia. Lo que sea que venga después para ti, esperamos poder ayudarte a hacer que tu tiempo en Casa de Campo sea mucho mejor y vivir cada día al máximo. ¡Carpe Diem! ¡Los veo pronto!

Benefit Cocktail for Fundación MIR & Hogar del Niño Emilia and J.Pepe Fanjul hosted their annual cocktail benefitting the MIR foundation and the Hogar del Niño. During the event, funds are raised for both institutions via a raffle and donations. Among the various items that had been donated for the raffle were a set of earrings and a necklace by Oscar de la Renta, a water pearl necklace with sterling silver and 18k gold cross with sapphires by Everett Designs and other very attractive items. The

funds raised help with the development of more programs for the Mir Foundation and the Hogar del Niño. Both foundations aim to help children and their families in La Romana through educational services and programs. After cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, several guests donated money for the charities and the raffle began with lucky winners taking home beautiful prizes. It was a magnificent evening benefiting two beautiful charities!

Benefit Cocktail por Fundación MIR & Hogar del Niño Emilia y J.Pepe Fanjul organizaron su cóctel anual en beneficio de la fundación MIR y el Hogar del Niño. Durante el evento, se recaudan fondos para ambas instituciones a través de un sorteo y donaciones. Entre los diversos artículos que habían sido donados para el sorteo había un juego de aretes y un collar de Oscar de la Renta, un collar de perlas de agua con plata esterlina y una cruz de oro de 18 quilates con zafiros de Everett Designs y otros artículos muy atractivos. Los fondos recaudados ayudan con el desarrollo de más programas para
la Fundación Mir y el Hogar del Niño. Ambas fundaciones tienen como objetivo ayudar a los niños y sus familias en La Romana a través de servicios y programas educativos. Después de cócteles y entremeses, varios invitados donaron dinero para las organizaciones benéficas y el sorteo comenzó con afortunados ganadores llevándose a casa hermosos premios. ¡Fue una noche magnífica que benefició a dos hermosas organizaciones benéficas!

Adopt a Crib 2020
This year the traditional Adopt a Crib dinner took place at the new Marina Riverside Center. Guests flowed steadily into the party until it felt like the entire Casa de Campo community was present. Welcome cocktails and hors d’oeuvre were presented to them as they entered the beautifully decorated venue. Hosted each year by Xiomara Menéndez, the founder of the Patronato Benéfico Oriental (umbrella organisation to

the Hogar del Niño) with her husband Ramon Menéndez, the “Adopt a Crib” dinner is an exclusive occasion to thank the generous Casa de Campo residents and villa owners who support the “Adopt a Crib” program, which enables the daycare and educational facility in La Romana to care for more than 200 babies in their “crib room” (la sala de cuna) everyday, as well as a total of more than 1700 youngsters.

Este año, la tradicional cena Adopt a Crib tuvo lugar en el nuevo Marina Riverside Center. XXIII Hogar del Niño Weekend Hogar del Niño hosted another fantastic charity weekend filled with fun events innovating the way our community comes together for a good cause. This year the weekend started with a “Flea Market” at the Living Room by Good Vibe in Altos de Chavón an awareness-raising activity that aimed to highlight the negative effects of the fast fashion industry whilst providing a positive and sustainable alternative – it was great seeing how the community

responded to this event! That same day a group got together at the La Romana Country Club Pool area for a yoga class. Saturday was filled with golf and tennis tournaments galore, as well as a bike tour around Casa. Once the sun went down, guests enjoyed a brightly colored dinner party at the country club. The dinner celebrated the winners of the tournaments and had everybody dancing to the tunes of La Boba Band..

XXIII Hogar del Niño Weekend Hogar del Niño organizó otro fantástico fin de semana de caridad lleno de eventos divertidos que innovaron la forma en que nuestra comunidad se une por una buena causa. Este año, el fin de semana comenzó con un "Mercado de pulgas" en el Living Room by Good Vibe en Altos de Chavón, una actividad de sensibilización que tenía como objetivo resaltar los efectos negativos de la industria de la moda rápida al tiempo que proporcionaba una alternativa positiva y
sostenible: fue genial ¡viendo cómo respondió la comunidad a este evento! Ese mismo día un grupo se reunió en el área de La Romana Country Club Pool para una clase de yoga. El sábado estuvo lleno de torneos de golf y tenis en abundancia, así como un recorrido en bicicleta por Casa. Una vez que se puso el sol, los invitados disfrutaron de una cena de colores brillantes en el club de campo. La cena celebró a los ganadores de los torneos e hizo que todos bailaran al ritmo de La Boba Band.

How did you start in the industry?

I worked with a lady who administered homes in Casa de Campo; most of her clients had their own airplanes, so she also helped them with their flight details, and she taught me as well. Seeing how much I enjoyed it, my husband, who was a chief pilot, encouraged me to manage the planes as a career; therefore, I created my own business called Aero Base International. A few years ago I was approached by Universal Aviation, offering me a new job opportunity and vision, and I decided to take it.

What is the best advice you can give to some one who would like to work in this industry? You have to love what you do to get the respect of your industry and find your calling within it. This is a very detailed oriented job, challenging but so rewarding. I love it with my heart. I never get tired of looking at airplanes.

It’s not about money, it’s about honesty, trust and respect. These are things you cannot buy, fake, manipulate, it’s a feeling, a certainty that only hard work can build up. These are some of the things I live for, because when you earn people’s respect, it’s an honor, and is of great value. To have my clients say “I love the way you work.” and “I feel safe with you” means alot to me. It’s feel great satisfaction to be the first one to greet and meet Casa de Campo’s customers and make their entrance as comfortable and smooth as possible.

LA GUAYIGA Do you know what guágiya is?
D
o you know what guágiya is? We didn’t know what it was either until recently while speaking with a friend about our culture and gastronomy. He had asked if we had ever eaten panecico and cholas and continues by explaining that they are made of guágiya, a plant that is all around Casa de Campo. As it turns out, the decorative fern that we have always seen around Casa with a peculiar looking red-colored cone is known as guáyiga and imagine our surprise knowing that the root of this plant can be eaten!
¿Sabes qué es guágiya? No sabíamos lo que era hasta hace poco mientras hablabamos con un amigo sobre nuestra cultura y gastronomía. Nos preguntó si alguna vez habíamos comido panecico y cholas y continúa explicando que están hechos de guágiya, una planta que se encuentra alrededor de Casa de Campo. Resulta ser que el helecho decorativo que siempre hemos visto alrededor de Casa con un cono de color rojizo de aspecto peculiar se conoce como guáyiga. ¡Imaginen nuestra sorpresa al saber que la raíz de esta planta se puede comer!
The scientific name is Zamia debilis, from the Zamiaceae Family. It is native to the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. The plant does not exceed one meter and has the appearance of a palm or fern with a stem that protrudes from the ground and a large and tuberous root. For its reproduction, it produces cones in the shape of cob, which, after fertilization, can be used as seeds.
El nombre científico es Zamia debilis, de la familia Zamiaceae. Es originaria de la República Dominicana, Cuba, Haití y Puerto Rico. La planta no excede un metro y tiene la apariencia de una palma o helecho con un tallo que sobresale del suelo y una raíz grande y tuberculosa. Para su reproducción, produce conos en forma de mazorca, que, después de la fertilización, pueden usarse como semillas.

THE SCIENTIFIC NAME IS FROM THE ZAMIACEAE FAMILY. In the Dominican Republic, many people describe it as “food of the past” since the Taínos used the root to make a type of bread known as panecico. It should be noted that this plant and all its parts are poisonous in its raw state and must be handled with care. The natives developed a way to extract the venom from the roots after grating, and washing it and then they ground it and used it to prepare food. According to Charles D. Beeker’s research, an underwater archaeologist at the University of Indiana who came to the country in the 90s, one of the walls of the José María cave located in the Eastern National Park shows a pictograph of how the Taínos planted, harvested and made bread from this local plant. In our country, Chef Inés Páez Nin popularly known as “Chef Tita”, one of the many chefs that have been dedicated to rescuing our gastronomic heritage, recently published an article with information about the guágiya which she called “an ingredient of great nobility” and as “one of the ingredients that many do not know and that is part of my rescue of the native products of our country.” She goes on to explain in detail how to use the root to prepare Cholas along with coconut, water, salt, and the guáyiga flour (taking all the necessary measures for it to be suitable for consumption). There are still regions of our country where they use the guágiya to prepare panecico, with the same recipe that the Taínos used; but its use as food has slowly been lost over time. Today the guayiga is most commonly cultivated to be used as an ornamental plant due to the intense green of its leaves.

En la República Dominicana, muchas personas lo describen como "comida del pasado" ya que los taínos usaron la raíz para hacer un tipo de pan conocido como panecico. Cabe señalar que esta planta y todas sus partes son tóxicas en su estado natural y deben manejarse con cuidado. Los nativos desarrollaron una forma de extraer el veneno de las raíces después de rallarlo, y lavarlo para luego molerlo y usarlo para preparar alimentos. De acuerdo a la investigación de Charles D. Beeker, un arqueólogo subacuático de la Universidad de Indiana que llegó al país en los años 90, una de las paredes de la cueva José María ubicada en el Parque Nacional del Este muestra una pictografía de como los taínos la plantaban, cosechaban y elaboraban pan de esta planta local. YOUR HOUSE, HERE ARE A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO STAY SAFE
As we adapt to our “new normal” and commercial activity in the Dominican Republic are slowly reopening to continue their operations we must remember that we still need to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. So if you need to leave your home to work, run errands, take a short walk or bike ride around your neighborhood (following all safety measures when out), these tips are for you. When leaving your house: • Remember to wear a face mask, not only to protect yourself but others around you. • It is preferable to use long sleeves, and women are advised to wear their hair up. • If you go out in a private car, clean the door handles, the steering wheel with alcohol (at least 60%), or disinfectant wipes. • Do not greet with kisses or hugs or shake hands. • Be attentive to the indications of the local authority about restrictions given to mobility and access to public places, such as shopping malls, clinics, hotels, restaurants. Only visit places strictly necessary and avoid conglomerations of people. • Wash your hands with soap whenever possible or with alcohol-based gel after touching any surfaces, objects, handling money, and when arriving/leaving your destination. • Assign an adult to do the shopping. • Restrict visits to family and friends if anyone has respiratory symptoms.

• When you enter the house take off your shoes and wash the sole with soap and water. • Avoid touching anything and before having contact with your family members, change your clothes, and if you will not wear them again put them in a plastic bag or laundry bag, take a shower – all this to prevent contaminating the rest of the house. • Keep work clothes separate from personal clothing. • Bathe with plenty of soap and water – if not possible wash all the exposed areas • Hand washing according to protocols. • Disinfect items that have been tampered with outside the home – cellphones, reading glasses, sunglasses, etc and clean any areas or objects you might have been in contact with when entering your house. • If possible leave all your regular items to leave your house in one particular area, a chest or box. • If you purchased anything, disinfect the packaging and place it on a clean surface. Place the products in the fridge or pantry after being washed or disinfected.

The Casa de Campo Shooting Centre is a great place to be on a sunny day – because it’s shady, plus they have the new Five Stand Shooting Facility! You can do a round of “clay pigeon shooting” and you’ll be in and out of the bushes, so you can enjoy the sun, whilst not getting burnt! But to enhance your sunny golfing experience we recommend: •Book an early tee time! On a hot and sunny day you may not feel like doing any exercise – like walking, biking, golfing or tennis. So what can you do if you still want to get out and about? Well my suggestion is to hop into your golf cart and take a tour around Casa de Campo. This is fun for tourists and locals alike, if you’re new to Casa de Campo you’ll discover new areas you’ve never seen before and if you’re a local you can just relax and enjoy the scenery – it really is incredibly beautiful, even if you’ve seen it all before! Take a few beers to keep you company and you have the recipe for a nice relaxed afternoon! En un día soleado y caluroso quizás no se sienta con ganas de hacer ningún tipo de ejercicio – como caminar, correr bicicleta, jugar golf o tenis. For the active, SUP or rather Stand Up Paddle Boarding is the perfect activity for when its hot and sunny. You’re on the water so you get that cool sea breeze, and when you get too hot you can take a dip in the water and then continue paddling. SUP boards are available to rent from Minitas Beach (on page 55 you can find all the Casa de Campo water sport options).
After a hard week at work (yawn), the very best thing you can do on a sunny day is head over to a friends house – preferably one with a nice pool, jacuzzi, butler and plenty of drinks and enjoy their company whilst you alternate between sunbathing, swimming and being sociable.

The cobbled pathways of this beautiful attraction lead both visitors and residents on a cultural and artistic journey, offering so much more than just a wonderful view and a pretty church. ST. STANISLAUS CHURCH Mass: Saturdays 5pm & Sundays 6pm. Consecrated in 1979, St. Stanislaus Church is named after the patron saint of Poland in tribute to Pope John Paul II who presented the church with the ashes of St. Stanislaus for its inauguration. A popular choice for destination weddings, it was here that famous actress Celinés Toribio wed in 2009, with fellow actress Michelle Rodríguez as her bridesmaid. According to rumors, the late Michael Jackson also married here, but although the couple did stay in Casa in 1994, this is not where he married Lisa Marie Presley.

“This is the marina that I dreamed of buildingtwenty years ago and which finally came true.” The Marina Casa de Campo is set in 90,000 square meters of land where the Chavón River meets the Caribbean Sea. Certainly, one of the Dominican Republic’s most upscale marinas, La Marina, as it’s known by locals, is close to a multitude of scenic sea destinations such as Catalina island, Saona island, and Palmilla, a natural swimming pool, as well as waters ripe for sport fishing which has granted them an appearance in the annual Billfish Report since 2013.

Opened in 2001, the Marina Casa de Campo marked a turning point in the development of both yachting and fishing activities in the eastern region of the country. The project was so successful that just a year later, an expansion of the Marina was approved and the wave breaker was cut and a second stage was constructed taking the project from 183 moorings to a total of 350 docks and capable of receiving ships from 30 to 250 feet in length.

The high quality of service, excellent facilities, and ease of access at the Marina Casa de Campo have all contributed to its success. This prestigious project is a dream come true, conceived by Italian architect Gianfranco Fini on his first visit to Casa de Campo after receiving an invitation from his friend Pierro Giacosa in 1989. Fini fell in love with the country and resort and presented his vision to Alfonso “Alfy” Fanjul, President of the Board of Directors Central Romana Corporation, in a fortuitous meeting aboard a river cruise boat up the Chavón River.
