On November 8, 2024, at the newly renovated Altos unveiled Alfabetos Probables, an evocative exhibition exploring humanity’s earliest attempts at communication.

In an intimate opening celebration, Casa de Campo’s community and Dominican art aficionados gathered to toast Fini’s artistic vision and his architectural legacy in the region. The evening featured a lively dialogue between Fini and Altos de Chavón’s manager, Luciana Goldfain, in which he shared insights into his creative process, likening his work to the innocence of a child’s first scribbles. Over the past 7 1/2 years, Casa de Campo’s racquet center has seen significant expansion in its service offerings and facility quality. The center now boasts 20 racquet sports facilities, including 11 clay tennis courts, one Har-Tru tennis court, four pickleball courts and four padel courts.

CASA DE CAMPO RESORT AND VILLAS celebrated the opening of two new padel courts at its racquet center on August 15, 2024. The friendly inaugural tournament brought together community members, marking a milestone in the evolution of this prestigious sports center.

With the addition of these new facilities, Casa de Campo’s racquet center now features four padel courts, doubling its previous capacity. This expansion allows for larger tournaments and provides a broader range of available times to meet the growing demand from clients.

Padel, a rapidly growing sport in the country, benefits from an infrastructure that supports play at any time of day. The racquet center’s courts are fully illuminated, enabling players to enjoy the sport even at night, with available hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Matías Territoriale, the director of the racquet center, expressed enthusiasm for the new additions and revealed plans for more tournaments to foster a sense of community among Casa de Campo’s clients and guests. “We aim to continue promoting an environment where our clients can enjoy padel and the camaraderie that the sport offers,” he said.

América Olivo is changing the narrative about waste and sustainability through her passion for art and commitment to the environment.

“Around us, plastic wraps, garbage is everywhere,” Olivo says at her workshop, a space filled with color and life, where creativity blends with environmental consciousness. Her words serve as a reminder of the urgency of the environmental crisis we face but also as a call to action. Olivo has been transforming waste into works of art, using materials like plastic, fabric and cables to create unique pieces that are aesthetically impressive and convey a powerful message about the need to care for our planet.

One of her most recent works, “The Pendant: Intertwined Stories,” was awarded a prize at the XXX National Visual Arts Biennial in 2023. This piece, woven from plastic waste collected from the streets of her community, is a moving testimony to the impact of rampant consumerism on our environment. HISTORICAL RELEVANCE The history of silversmithing in the Dominican Republic dates back to colonial times, when silversmiths arrived on the island from prominent cities in Spain, such as Seville, Valladolid and Toledo. The first silversmith arrived on the island with Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The Castilleja Art Foundation conducts an educational tour throughout the country to raise awareness of the importance of these pieces, exhibiting their own creations, such as lanterns, crowns, daggers and jugs, all crafted in their workshop in Seville.

During a visit to the Altos de Chavón Regional Archaeological Museum last May, they brought with them an exhibition titled The Splendor of Sevillian Silversmithing with the intention of showcasing the historical value of this art to the Casa de Campo community.

It is worth noting that in the Dominican Republic, the preservation of this heritage is not without challenges. Since the early years of the colony, events such as the invasion of the pirate Francis Drake in 1586 and the Treaty of Basel in 1795 have left their mark on the heritage of silversmithing in the country.

José Brihuega says that the corsair Francis Drake plundered the city of Santo Domingo, taking with him an incalculable number of valuable objects, while the Treaty of Basel was exploited by Fray Fernando Portillo y Torres, who ordered the collection of most of the silversmithing pieces existing at that time to send them to Cuba.

The threats still persist. Nowadays, thefts and the melting down of pieces to transform them into other objects further underscore the urgency of protecting these invaluable works of art.

ONGOING HERITAGE The Dominican Republic has a very important heritage of ancient religious silversmithing pieces. Many of them can still be appreciated today in churches such as the Catedral Primada de América de Santo Domingo, which has a museum with an exquisite collection. There are also notable pieces in the Church and Convent of Regina Angelorum, located in the Colonial Zone, as well as in the Alcázar de Colón, which houses a remarkable collection of civil silversmithing, including objects of great historical and artistic value beyond their religious context.
