AQUÍ NI ALLÁ” EXHIBITION BY ANA SOFIA BATLLE

The recent exhibition “Ni aquí ni allá” by Dominican artist Ana Sofia Batlle at WAO Gallery & Cultural Center in Altos de Chavón was a great success, drawing in the local community and art enthusiasts alike. Batlle’s abstract paintings explored the relationship between humans and nature, using layering techniques to convey the complexities of individuality and our connection to the world around us. The exhibition featured 16 pieces that represented the union of one and several elements, exploring the relationship between individuality and collectivity, and capturing the feeling of being trapped in one place, even as one seeks to move towards different stages of life. Visitors could enjoy the exhibit from April 28 to May 22, 2023, and proceeds from the exhibit went to supporting the Patronato Benéfico Oriental’s social programs.

La reciente exposición “Ni aquí ni allá” de la artista dominicana Ana Sofía Batlle en la Galería y Centro Cultural WAO de Altos de Chavón fue un éxito rotundo, atrayendo tanto a la comunidad local como a entusiastas del arte. Las pinturas abstractas de Batlle exploran la relación entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza, utilizando técnicas de superposición para transmitir las complejidades de la individualidad y nuestra conexión con el mundo que nos rodea. La exposición presentó 16 obras que representan la unión de uno y varios elementos, explorando la relación entre la individualidad y la colectividad, que captura la sensación de estar atrapado en un lugar, incluso mientras uno busca avanzar hacia diferentes etapas de la vida. Los visitantes pudieron disfrutar de la exposición del 28 de abril al 22 de mayo de 2023, y los fondos recaudados se destinaron a apoyar los programas sociales del Patronato Benéfico Oriental.

LAUGHTER AND NIGHT GOLF AT CASA DE CAMPO’S COMEDY NIGHT GOLF

Casa de Campo Resort and Villas hosted an unusual event, Comedy Night Golf, where night golf and comedy merged to create a cheerful and vibrant atmosphere for attendees. The event started with night golf, in which golf enthusiasts enjoyed the experience of hitting illuminated balls at LED-lit targets on the field. Later on, the audience enjoyed the most anticipated show, in which comedians Flex Alexander, Buddy Lewis and Chris Spencer performed, entertaining the audience with their jokes revolving around various topics related to adult life. This event is one of the novelties Casa de Campo has planned for its guests’ enjoyment.

Casa de Campo Resort and Villas organizó un evento inusual, Comedy Night Golf, donde el golf nocturno y la comedia se fusionaron para crear un ambiente alegre y vibrante para los asistentes. El evento comenzó con golf nocturno, en el que los entusiastas del golf disfrutaron de la experiencia de golpear bolas luminosas en dianas iluminadas con LED en el campo. Más tarde, el público disfrutó del espectáculo más esperado, en el que actuaron los comediantes Flex Alexander, Buddy Lewis y Chris Spencer, que entretuvieron al público con sus chistes sobre diversos temas relacionados con la vida adulta. NAUTICAL ENTREPRENEUR MAURO CASLINI RECEIVES ITALIAN HONOR

Mauro Caslini, a nautical entrepreneur and resident of Casa de Campo, was awarded the Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia by the Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The award, presented by the Italian ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Stefano Queirolo Palmas, is the second civil honor of Italy and is given to those Italians abroad who promote shared friendship, collaboration, culture and language between Italy and their country of residence. The ceremony took place at the Marina Casa de Campo Yacht Club and was attended by top management of the Central Romana Corporation, Casa de Campo, officials of the Dominican Republic Navy, and family and friends of Mr. Caslini.

Mauro Caslini, empresario náutico y residente de Casa de Campo, recibió la condecoración Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia de manos del presidente italiano Sergio Mattarella. La condecoración, entregada por el embajador italiano en la República Dominicana, Stefano Queirolo Palmas, es el segundo honor civil de Italia y se otorga a aquellos italianos en el extranjero que promueven la amistad, la colaboración, la cultura y el idioma compartidos entre Italia y su país de residencia. La ceremonia tuvo lugar en el Club Náutico Marina Casa de Campo y contó con la presencia de altos directivos del Central Romana Corporation, Casa de Campo, oficiales de la Armada de la República Dominicana, y familiares y amigos del Sr. Caslini.

CASA DE CAMPO POLO CHALLENGE 2023 CONCLUDES WITH THRILLING FINALE

The Casa de Campo Polo Challenge 2023 concluded with the Casa de Campo team winning the Casa de Campo Open Cup after a thrilling match against the Power Infrastructure team. The event, which attracted hundreds of visitors, was held during the Semana Santa holidays and featured top-notch teams such as McDonald’s 3J and La Patrona. The winning team was composed of Alex Schad, Leo Matos, Pablo Avalos and Dennys Santana; the llatter was named the most valuable player. The tournament was organized by Casa de Campo’s polo director, Dr. Fernando Arata, and it has solidified the resort’s reputation as a benchmark for polo in the Caribbean.

El Casa de Campo Polo Challenge 2023 concluyó con el equipo Casa de Campo ganando la Copa Abierta Casa de Campo después de un emocionante partido contra el equipo Power Infrastructure. El evento, que atrajo a cientos de visitantes, se celebró durante las vacaciones de Semana Santa y contó con equipos de primera categoría como McDonald’s 3J y La Patrona. El equipo ganador estaba compuesto por Alex Schad, Leo Matos, Pablo Ávalos y Dennys Santana; siendo este último nombrado como jugador más valioso. El torneo fue organizado por el director de polo de Casa de Campo, Dr. Fernando Arata, y ha consolidado la reputación del complejo como punto de referencia del polo en el Caribe.

18TH MCDANIEL TENNIS TOURNAMENT BY PBO

The 18th McDaniel Tennis Tournament by PBO was held from March 9 to 12, drawing community members to support the McDaniel Tennis Program’s initiatives and witness competitive matches between the players. The tournament supports the education of Casa de Campo’s ball boys and the players’ health insurance. This year’s final match was between Francisco Concepción and Nando Botello versus Edwin Guerrero and Jordany Castillo, with the latter pair emerging as winners. Every participant was awarded prize money, and runners-up and winners received trophies. The awards ceremony brought together sponsors, players, ball boys and their families to celebrate another successful McDaniel Tennis Tournament.

Del 9 al 12 de marzo se celebró el 18º Torneo de Tenis McDaniel by PBO, que atrajo a miembros de la comunidad para apoyar las iniciativas del Programa de Tenis McDaniel y presenciar partidos competitivos entre los jugadores. El torneo apoya la educación de los boleritos de Casa de Campo y el seguro médico de los jugadores. En la final de este año se enfrentarón Francisco Concepción y Nando Botello contra Edwin Guerrero y Jordany Castillo, resultando vencedora esta última pareja. Todos los participantes recibieron premios en metálico, y los subcampeones y ganadores, trofeos. La ceremonia de entrega de premios reunió a patrocinadores, jugadores, recogepelotas y sus familias para celebrar otro exitoso Torneo de Tenis McDaniel.

FIRST-EVER LADIES POLO CUP HELD AT CASA DE CAMPO

The first-ever Ladies Polo Cup of the Dominican Republic was held at the Casa de Campo Polo Club, featuring a highly competitive match that saw the T Pack Ladies Polo Team defeat American Express with a score of 4-3. The event also celebrated women and raised funds for the Patronato Benéfico Oriental’s Madres Maravilla program, which empowers single mothers in the tourism industry who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament received support from various sponsors and featured offerings from top-notch brands. Spectators were treated to delicious treats and a stylish tent, while individual players were recognized for their outstanding performance.

El Fin de Semana del Hogar del Niño - Edición de Plata - se llevó a cabo el 18 de febrero de 2023. El evento tiene como objetivo crear conciencia y recaudar fondos para la organización y las escuelas del Patronato Benéfico Oriental mediante actividades de recaudación de fondos. Los asistentes disfrutaron de los tradicionales torneos de golf y tenis, yoga, el primer torneo de padel y pickleball, y un evento de pintura y degustación de vinos. El día culminó con una hermosa cena en la que los ganadores de los diferentes torneos celebrados durante el día fueron premiados. Los invitados disfrutaron de una deliciosa comida y después de la cena, no tardaron en pasar a la pista de baile y bailar al ritmo de La Boba Band, finalizando un increíble fin de semana en apoyo a una causa maravillosa.

COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER FOR ADOPT-A-CRIB PROGRAM

The Minitas Beach Club in Casa de Campo hosted the annual Adopt-a-Crib dinner on February 24, celebrating funds raised for the Hogar del Niño organization. The exclusive cocktail party recognized the contributions of Casa de Campo residents and villa owners to the Adopt-a-Crib program, which supports the education and care of children in La Romana. Every person in attendance has donated at least $1,000 annually to the program, which cares for more than 200 babies and over 1,700 children every day. The event showcased the community’s unity and generosity in supporting the Hogar del Niño mission.

El Minitas Beach Club de Casa de Campo acogió el 24 de febrero la cena anual Adopta una Cuna, en la que se celebraron los fondos recaudados para la organización Hogar del Niño. El exclusivo cóctel reconoció las contribuciones de los residentes de Casa de Campo y los propietarios de villas al programa Adopta una Cuna, que apoya la educación y el cuidado de los niños en La Romana. Cada uno de los asistentes ha donado al menos 1,000 dólares anuales al programa, que atiende a más de 200 bebés y más de 1,700 niños cada día. El acto puso de manifiesto la unidad y generosidad de la comunidad a la hora de apoyar la misión del Hogar del Niño.

2023 MIR SUGAR BAZAAR

THE MIR SUGAR BAZAAR in Casa de Campo supported Fundación MIR’s schools in La Romana. The event featured a ladies’ luncheon and fashion show hosted by Lian Fanjul de Azqueta. Attendees shopped for gifts and enjoyed a catered lunch. The fashion show showcased clothes from El Faldellin by Surelis and designer Ala von Auersperg. All this, including fundraising for a great cause!

EL MIR SUGAR BAZAAR en Casa de Campo apoyó a las escuelas de la Fundación MIR en La Romana. El evento contó con un almuerzo de damas y un desfile de moda presentado por Lian Fanjul de Azqueta. Las asistentes compraron regalos y disfrutaron de un almuerzo. En el desfile de moda se exhibieron prendas de El Faldellin de Surelis y de la diseñadora Ala von Auersperg. Todo esto, ¡incluyendo la recaudación de fondos para una gran causa!

FEID ROCKS ALTOS DE CHAVÓN WITH “FERXXO NITRO JAM TOUR”

FEID’S FERXXO NITRO Jam Tour electrified the crowds at Altos de Chavón during the traditional Semana Santa concert in Casa de Campo, complete with neon green lights, smoke and fireworks. Accompanied by two DJs and a guitarist, Feid performed hits like “La Inocente,” “Prohibidox” and “Te Mata.” Puerto Rican artist Yandel also made a surprise appearance, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended the event produced by Gamal RD.

EL FERXXO NITRO Jam Tour de Feid electrizó a la multitud en Altos de Chavón durante el tradicional concierto de Semana Santa en Casa de Campo, completo con luces verdes neón, humo y fuegos artificiales. Acompañado por dos DJ y un guitarrista, Feid interpretó éxitos como “La Inocente”, “Prohibidox” y “Te Mata”. El artista puertorriqueño Yandel también hizo una aparición sorpresa, dejando una impresión duradera en todos los que asistieron al evento producido por Gamal RD.

MCDANIEL TENNIS TOURNAMENT SPONSOR APPRECIATION COCKTAIL EVENT

THE MCDANIEL Tennis Tournament by PBO held a sponsor appreciation cocktail event at La Terraza Tennis Center to celebrate the successful fundraising event, which supports programs for young players. The cocktail event featured sponsors, players and an exciting doubles match. The tournament has been running for 18 years and has already made a significant impact on Casa de Campo’s ball boys and players.

EL TORNEO DE TENIS MCDANIEL by PBO organizó un cóctel de agradecimiento a los patrocinadores en el Centro de Tenis La Terraza para celebrar el éxito del evento de recaudación de fondos, que apoya programas para jóvenes jugadores. En el cóctel participaron patrocinadores, jugadores y un emocionante partido de dobles. El torneo ha estado funcionando durante 18 años y ya ha tenido un impacto significativo en los recogepelotas y jugadores de Casa de Campo.

ALTOS DE CHAVÓN’S INDEPENDENCE DAY FESTIVITIES

THE DOMINICAN Independence was celebrated in Altos de Chavón’s main plaza, featuring traditional food, live music by Orquesta Caribe, carnival dancers and drummers and a cigar-rolling demonstration. The evening ended with a dazzling fireworks display, making it a true reflection of Dominican culture — vibrant, lively and filled with joy.

LA INDEPENDENCIA dominicana se celebró en la plaza principal de Altos de Chavón, con comida tradicional, música en directo de la Orquesta Caribe, bailarines y tamborileros de carnaval y una demostración de liado de puros. La velada terminó con un deslumbrante espectáculo de fuegos artificiales, fiel reflejo de la cultura dominicana: vibrante, animada y llena de alegría.

Each year, Casa de Campo hosts the Sugar Tournaments. These two prestigious, invitation-only annual events have become the most glamorous, exclusive and important events in the Casa de Campo social calendar. Each event gathers an extraordinary group of people from around the globe who come together for a week of friendly competition, cocktails and fine dining at Casa de Campo’s numerous restaurants and a wonderful dinner and prize-giving celebration at the end of the week-long festivities.

But the Sugar Tournaments are much more than that: their purpose is to generate donations for Fundación MIR, a charity that runs three schools in La Romana, serving over 1,500 students. The fundraising event provides critical support for the foundation’s mission of improving access to education for disadvantaged children in the Dominican Republic. By supporting Fundación MIR, the Sugar Tournaments help to make a real difference in the lives of these students and their communities.

Cada año, Casa de Campo acoge los Torneos Sugar. Estos dos prestigiosos eventos anuales, a los que sólo se puede asistir por invitación, se han convertido en los acontecimientos más glamurosos, exclusivos e importantes del calendario social de Casa de Campo. Cada evento reúne a un extraordinario grupo de personas de todo el mundo que se reúnen durante una semana de competición amistosa, cócteles y buena comida en los numerosos restaurantes de Casa de Campo y una maravillosa cena y entrega de premios al final de la semana de festividades.

Pero los Torneos Sugar son mucho más que eso: su propósito es generar donaciones para la Fundación MIR, una organización benéfica que dirige tres escuelas en La Romana, que atienden a más de 1,500 estudiantes. Mission International Rescue Charities is a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of marginalized communities in the Dominican Republic. Since its establishment in 1990, MIR has partnered with and funded social programs, serving women, youth and children in La Romana and the eastern region. The programs provide essential services, including housing, medical assistance, education and technical training to those in need. With the support of benefactors and individual contributions, MIR continues to make a significant impact on the lives of the most vulnerable members of the community. The organization’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life in these underserved areas highlights the vital role of non-profit organizations in promoting social justice and equity.

The Sugar Tournaments comprise a series of annual events, including the Sugar Golf Tournament led by Alfy Fanjul, the MIR Bazaar and Ladies Luncheon hosted by Lian Fanjul de Azqueta and the Sugar Shooting Tournament headed by J. Pepe Fanjul. Originally, “The Sugar” was just another golf tournament in Casa de Campo, founded in 1984 by Alfy Fanjul and Don Creamer. In 1990, Alfy Fanjul won the tournament and donated his winnings to his sister, Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, to purchase “Casa Paz.” Since then, the Sugar Tournaments

In 1988, J. Pepe Fanjul hosted the first Sugar Shooting Tournament in honor of the opening of the improved shooting facility, the Casa de Campo Shooting Center. The facility, originally situated near the Casa de Campo polo fields, now features a sporting clays circuit with over 200 stations, two pigeon rings, skeet and trap facilities and an alternative to a traditional sporting clays course called the “Five Stand.” The Sugar Tournaments, with their mix of sportsmanship and philanthropy, exemplify the power of community-led initiatives in promoting social welfare.

Fifteen years later, following the appointment of the new director of shooting, Shaun Snell, a new shooting facility was opened at Rancho Peligro, a beautiful 10,000-acre wilderness reserve outside of the resort where live bird shoots could take place, owned by the Central Romana Corporation. Rancho Peligro boasts six different drive locations to show the best possible birds and was designed by Shaun Snell in collaboration with J. Pepe Fanjul; its opening has allowed the Sugar Tournament to grow from a four-day event to a six-day event.

SUGAR GOLF TOURNAMENT

This April, Alfy Fanjul hosted the 38th Annual Sugar Golf Tournament at Casa de Campo, welcoming over 300 guest golfers from around the globe to participate in a tradition that has stood the test of time. This year, the ladies competed on the Dye Fore (Lakes/Marina) and the Links, while the gentlemen played on the Teeth of the Dog and the La Romana Country Club course.

Following the tournament, golfers and their guests gathered at the La Romana Country Club for a highly anticipated party and prize-giving ceremony. Amid a vibrant atmosphere filled with friendly conversations and laughter, attendees sipped poolside cocktails while first-time participants mingled with seasoned veterans who have been competing for over thirty years. Alfy Fanjul, the esteemed host, expressed his unwavering support and his gratitude to the guests for their attendance before the buffet-style dinner commenced.

Joined by his daughters, Crista Ryan and Lillian Fernandez, and his longtime friend Jamie Niven, Alfy Fanjul presented the winners of the tennis, padel tennis and golf tournaments with a variety of impressive prizes, including elegant jewelry crafted by Everett Designs for the women, custom-tailored suits designed by Paolo Pontiggia for the men and well-deserved trophies.

In the ladies’ tournament, Paola Del Vecchio and Marina Gelati emerged as the winners, with Crista Ryan and Maria Jose Oliva as the gross winners. Meanwhile, in the men’s division, a rare tie occurred, with the team of Lin Rogers and Ramón Brenas and the team of Rolando González-Bunster and Kevin Mahaney named the co-winners of this year’s Jamie Niven Cup.

SUGAR SHOOTING TOURNAMENT

The annual Sugar Shooting Tournament, hosted by J. Pepe Fanjul, follows the longstanding tradition of its sister event, the Sugar Golf Tournament, which is hosted by his brother, Alfy Fanjul. This year marks the 36th anniversary of the tournament, and guests hailing from the United Kingdom, Texas and Florida were privileged to enjoy the world-class shooting facilities at Casa de Campo, as well as Rancho Peligro. Given the impressive group of world-class shooters in attendance, much discussion centered on the various styles of shooting found around the globe.

After a week of shooting and social gatherings, the conclusion of the tournament was celebrated with a dinner held at Casa Grande, which was hosted by J. Pepe Fanjul and his wife, Emilia Fanjul. The evening began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner. J. Pepe Fanjul and Casa de Campo’s director of shooting, Jake Pike, announced the winners of the various tournaments in a cheerful and exciting atmosphere. Unlike the participants in the Sugar Golf Tournament, the shooters had, until this point, no idea who had won.

In its early years, the Sugar Shooting Tournament exclusively recognized individual tournament winners with trophies. However, the tournament committee expanded its recognition to include the Gubelmann Cup, donated by James Gubelmann, with the aim of motivating participants to engage in multiple events. James Gubelmann opined that the additional award would spur enthusiasm among the attendees. In addition, the High Overall Cup was introduced in 2013 to incorporate the European-style Driven Bird Shoot and all other events, further raising the tournament’s prestige. It is noteworthy that shooters may not win more than one event.

When it was time to hand out the prizes, J. Pepe Fanjul stated, “I’m very happy to see you all here again today. It’s been 36 Sugar Shooting Tournaments, and I think we all loved it and enjoyed it. It keeps getting better and better. I want to thank my wife, Emilia, for organizing this event and also credit the staff at the Shooting Center for their diligence and hard work. Jake Pike, the shooting center director, has done a fantastic job organizing this tournament. I’m very proud of how everything has turned out.”

Awards were given to the individual winners of the different categories. Before awarding the Gubelmann Cup, James Gubelmann stated, “What a wonderful week we’ve had here. We’ve been coming here for 26 years, and 20 years ago, we started the Gubelmann Cup with the help of Pepe and his desire to get more people involved with some of the local shooting. This year I must’ve shot more than 600 rounds of shell, and I have to tell you, it’s exhausting, fun, exhilarating and wonderful. I want to thank the Fanjul family for letting us all do this; all of you are wonderful.” The cup was awarded to Andrés Fanjul Jr., with the highest overall shooting score in the events held at the Casa de Campo Shooting Center, exclusive of the driven pheasant and partridge shoot at Rancho Peligro.

Meanwhile, the High Overall Cup was awarded to Mason Berry, with the highest overall shooting score in all the events at the Shooting Center and Rancho Peligro. “This is our tenth year coming to the Sugar Shooting. It was an absolute joy to come back and compete. The sporting clay, in particular, was really tough this year, but fair, and it was really great to earn a good score there. I want to congratulate Andrés on his back-to-back records. The honest competition of competing with Andrés is what brings me back every year, and it’s so much fun; thank you to the Fanjuls,” stated Berry when receiving his award.

This year’s Sugar Tournaments might have drawn to a close, but their positive impact will continue to be felt throughout the year. We look forward to next year’s tournaments!

WAO CHAVÓN, WAO GALLERY AND THE ACTIVATION OF THE REGIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

CHAVÓN IS CULTURE. It has been that way since its creation, so each administration that arrives there must ensure that its raison d’être is maintained over time. Xiomara Menéndez Dajer, president of the Patronato Benéfico Oriental, understands the task well. Xiomarita, as she is affectionately called by her friends and family, has taken on the task of managing two important cultural areas in Altos de Chavón, the Regional Archaeological Museum and the art gallery, now called WAO Gallery, together with a great team. But in addition, she created an extra one — the WAO Chavón, a workspace for the community.

Chavón es cultura. Así ha sido desde su creación, por lo que cada administración que llega allí debe velar porque se mantenga su razón de ser a través del tiempo. Xiomara Menéndez Dajer, presidenta del Patronato Benéfico Oriental (PBO), ha comprendido muy bien la tarea. Xiomarita, como cariñosamente la llaman sus amigos y familiares, ha asumido junto a un gran equipo la tarea de gestionar dos áreas culturales importantes en Altos de Chavón, se trata del Museo Arqueológico Regional y la galería de arte, que ahora se llama WAO Gallery. Pero, además, le añade una extra: el WAO Chavón, un espacio de trabajo para la comunidad.

“The idea of collaborating in all these respects arose as a result of the pandemic and the months of quarantine, which served as an incubator to be able to delve deeper into the needs of our community within Casa de Campo, but at the same time, to think about how to create that bridge that connects us to other communities and to the work that we have been doing through all our PBO initiatives,” explains Menéndez Dajer. “That’s when we decided to incorporate the WAO brand into our proposal in Altos de Chavón.”

WAO stands for “We are one.” And, according to the creator, it means assuming that we are all one with our environment. It is about connecting with the elements and with creativity, inviting awareness through all our senses.

And it all makes sense; since last year, there has been a resurgence of the arts in Altos de Chavón, thanks to the various activities and events that have taken place. The WAO initiative also adds to the various pro-fund activities of the PBO.

“At the WAO Gallery, we invite visiting artists to get involved with the social programs we sponsor, not only by committing a significant percentage of the works sold but also by volunteering their time to give talks or classes to the communities we serve and to our community,” Menéndez Dajer points out.

Meanwhile, WAO Chavón invites collaboration in a workspace for the community. Like other workspaces, its spaces can be rented as offices or meeting rooms, and its shared spaces can

WAO significa We Are One. Y de acuerdo con la creadora, es asumir que todos somos uno con nuestro entorno. Se trata de conectar con los elementos y con la creatividad, invitando por medio de todos nuestros sentidos a la sensibilización.

Y todo tiene sentido, desde el año pasado se ha notado un resurgimiento de las artes en Altos de Chavón, gracias a las diversas actividades y eventos que se están celebrando desde entonces. La iniciativa WAO también se suma a las distintas actividades pro-fondo del PBO.

“En WAO Gallery, invitamos a los artistas que nos visitan a que se involucren con los programas sociales que auspiciamos, no solamente dejando un por ciento importante de las obras vendidas, sino también ofreciendo su tiempo para impartir charlas o clases a las comunidades que servimos y a nuestra comunidad”, indica Menéndez Dajer.

This center is intended to generate income that can then be reinvested in the PBO’s social programs, such as the Villa de Transformación, in Villa Hermosa. This is a center that will serve as a base so that young people from that community who are in a state of great vulnerability can study, engage in new undertakings and create in a safe space.

LOVE OF ART

“Personally, I love art, I think art is a very important way to express ourselves as a language that often goes beyond the word,” says Menéndez Dajer. “I think the artist is also the one who perceives the work and allows himself to hear, touch or feel the message. Then the work becomes shared in a collaboration of the one who makes it and the one who perceives it — the audience. In my case, I can appreciate any artistic expression through any medium. I love to immerse myself in a work and just feel that shared world where I can be ONE with it, with the artist, with the message and the creation.”

When Menéndez Dajer took over the cultural management of Altos de Chavón, she thought big.

WAO Chavón también reúne personas o iniciativas amigables con el medio ambiente, invitando a la sostenibilidad de los recursos.

Con este centro se pretende generar ingresos que luego pueden ser reinvertidos en los programas sociales del PBO, como la “Villa de Transformación”, en Villa Hermosa. Este es un centro que servirá de base para que jóvenes de esa comunidad en estado de gran vulnerabilidad puedan estudiar, emprender y crear en un espacio seguro.

AMOR AL ARTE

“En lo personal, me encanta el arte. Creo que el arte es un medio muy importante para expresarnos, un lenguaje que muchas veces llega más allá que la palabra. Creo que es artista también el que percibe la obra, y se permite escuchar, palpar o sentir el mensaje; entonces la obra se convierte en una compartida, en una colaboración de quien la hace y quien la percibe: la audiencia. En mi caso, puedo apreciar cualquier expresión artística a través de cualquier medio. Me encanta sumergirme en una obra y solo sentir ese mundo compartido en donde puedo ser UNA con ella, con el artista, con el mensaje, con la creación”. Xiomara Menéndez Dájer, presidenta del PBO.

She included on her team an important Dominican museologist and art curator, Margarita González Auffant.

González Auffant, when called to direct the Altos de Chavón Regional Archaeological Museum, did not hesitate for a second to move to La Romana and take it on. This museum is a reference for Dominican museologists because it has an excellent collection of pieces that narrate the lives of the first inhabitants of the island. This center has maintained its prestige with research as well as recreational and educational activities for different audiences.

However, the museologist comments that, at some point, this museum lost its impact on the Dominican cultural world, especially before the pandemic. “So, I took on the direction of the museum as a challenge, with the aim of placing it again as a museum of projection, education and impact in the Dominican cultural world and, why not, at the international level,” she says.

And she has succeeded. The museum is breaking records for guided visits, with 1,968 schoolchildren from all over the country and 2,637 tourists in March 2023 alone. All this, in addition to the design and development of workshops, exhibitions, activities, camps, and more.

And, as the curator of contemporary art at WAO Gallery, González Auffant comments that this challenge came a little after being installed in Altos de Chavón.

González Auffant explains that contemporary art has always been present in her life, with a mother who is a philosopher and art historian, Margarita Auffant, and a great uncle, Rafael Auffant, who was the founder of the first Dominican gallery.

“In my home, they talked about art and artists all the time, and the job of contemporary art curator has come naturally, without neglecting the academic specialization,” she says.

From 2022 to March 2023, WAO Gallery held 16 exhibitions. They have presented a portfolio of a variety of quality artists, including young artists, such as Joaquín Basanta, Simón de los Santos and Vanessa Languasco, and established artists, such as Fernando Tamburini. The gallery also held collective exhibitions, such as “Chromatisms,” as well as photography exhibitions on conservationist themes with Eladio Fernández and photographs of the preservation of manatees by Fundemar.

González Auffant points out that the agenda is full for the remainder of the year 2023. They are already planning for the year 2024.

Al asumir la gestión cultural de Altos de Chavón, Xiomara Menéndez pensó en grande. Dentro de su equipo incluyó a una importante museóloga y curadora de arte dominicana, Margarita González Auffant.

González Auffant, al ser convocada para dirigir el Museo Arqueológico Regional Altos de Chavón, no dudó ni un segundo en mudarse a La Romana y asumirlo. Es que este museo es un referente para los museólogos dominicanos, debido a que tiene una excelente colección de piezas que narran la vida de los primeros habitantes de la isla. Definitivamente, este centro mantenía el prestigio con investigaciones y actividades lúdicas y educativas para distintos públicos. Sin embargo, la museóloga comenta que, en algún momento, este museo perdió su incidencia en el mundo cultural dominicano, sobre todo antes de la pandemia. “Por lo que asumí la dirección del museo como un reto, con la finalidad de colocarlo de nuevo como un museo de proyección, educación e incidencia en el mundo cultural dominicano y, por qué no, a nivel internacional”, detalla.

Y ha tenido éxito. El museo está rompiendo récord de visitas guiadas, llegando a manejar 1,968 escolares de toda la geografía nacional y 2,637 turistas sólo en el mes de marzo de 2023, al margen del diseño y desarrollo de talleres, exposiciones, actividades, campamentos etc. Y, como curadora de arte contemporáneo en WAO Gallery, González Auffant comenta que este reto vino un poco después de estar instalada en Altos de Chavón.

freeing creators in the search for new answers. The museum’s activities and guided tours contribute to a greater knowledge of Dominican culture, which reinforces national identity and a love of Dominican cultural heritage.

The same is true of the gallery exhibitions and the knowledge of Dominican and international artists that allows them to analyze different moments and styles of current art.

González Auffant’s passion is museums. She has studied them since her youth, having worked at the age of 18 at the Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Educational Services, where she began her career. She conceived more than seven Dominican museums and educational parks, including the Trampolín Children’s Museum, the Telecommunications Museum, the Ramón Cáceres House Museum, the General Gregorio Luperón House Museum and the Museum of the Virgin of Altagracia, next to the Basilica in Higüey. From an administrative point of view, she directed the Pago en Especie collection of the Museo de Hacienda y Crédito Público in Mexico and assumed the direction of the Museo Virreinal Alcázar de Colón in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo.

González Auffant explica que el arte contemporáneo está presente desde siempre en su vida, con una madre filósofa e historiadora del arte, Margarita Auffant, y un tío abuelo, Rafael Auffant, fundador de la primera galería dominicana. “En mi hogar se hablaba de arte y artistas todo el tiempo, y el trabajo de curador de arte contemporáneo se ha dado de manera natural, sin dejar de lado la especialización académica”, asegura.

Desde el 2022 hasta marzo del 2023, WAO Gallery ha realizado 16 exposiciones. En ellas se ha presentado una cartera de artistas muy variados y con calidad. Artistas jóvenes como Joaquín Basanta, Simón de los Santos y Vanessa Languasco; y artistas consagrados como Fernando Tamburini; también colectivas como “Cromatismos”; Además, exposiciones de fotografía de tema conservacionista, con Eladio Fernández, y las fotografías de la preservación de Manatíes de Fundemar.

González Auffant señala que la agenda está llena para lo que queda de este año 2023. Ya están programando la del año 2024, inclusive.

LEGADO

Aprovechando que el arte dominicano se encuentra en un excelente momento, ya que las crisis políticas, sociales y económicas que han surgido están liberando al creador en la búsqueda de nuevas respuestas, Chavón mantiene su contribución a la sociedad. Es que, con las actividades del museo y las visitas guiadas se aporta a un mayor conocimiento de la cultura dominicana, lo que refuerza la identidad nacional y el amor al patrimonio cultural dominicano. Lo mismo sucede con las exposiciones de la galería y el conocimiento de artistas dominicanos e internacionales, lo que permite poder analizar distintos momentos y estilos del arte actual.

La pasión de Margarita González Auffant son los museos. Los estudió desde su juventud, habiendo trabajado a los 18 años en el Museo de Arte Moderno en el Departamento de Servicios Educativos, donde inicia su historia. Ha concebido más de siete museos y parques educativos dominicanos, entre estos Museo Infantil Trampolín, el Museo de la Telecomunicaciones, La Casa Museo presidente Ramón Cáceres, La Casa Museo General Gregorio Luperón y el Museo de la Virgen de la Altagracia, al lado de la Basílica en Higüey. Desde el punto de vista administrativo, dirigió la colección de Pago en Especia del Museo de Hacienda y Crédito Público de México y asumió la dirección del Museo Virreinal Alcázar de Colón, en la zona colonial de Santo Domingo.

For cigar lovers, smoking is a pleasure. It is an activity that allows you to disconnect, to transport yourself to an intimate dimension where there is only calm and tranquility.

The Dominican Republic is home to not only some of the best cigar makers in the world but also top industry experts. Casa de Campo Living interviewed two of those experts, who, because of their experience in the tobacco sector, shared their knowledge about the pleasure of smoking.

There are several things to be considered when choosing a smoke, such as your mood, your environment, the weather — which also influences the smoking experience — and the beverage you have available at the moment, such as rum or coffee, for example.

Isis Lawrence, an employee of the Tabacalera de García cigar factory for 12 years, understands that the moment you light up a cigar is very personal — and if you have the opportunity, you can plan your smoke, including picking whom you enjoy that moment with, where you decide to smoke and whether or not you have a drink. Smoking can be social because it can be done among several people or with close friends. It’s all up to you.

This sentiment is shared by Rubén González, an entrepreneur in the tobacco sector and very well-known in the Casa de

República Dominicana, además de tener uno de los puros más atractivos en el mercado mundial, también tiene muy buenos expertos en la industria. Casa de Campo Living ha entrevistado a dos de ellos, quienes, por su experiencia en el sector tabacalero, nos comparten sus conocimientos sobre el placer de fumar puro.

Hay varias cosas que se toman en cuenta para elegir la fumada, como el estado de ánimo, el ambiente donde se esté, el clima, que también influye en la experiencia de la fumada, y la bebida que se tiene disponible en el momento, como ron y café, por ejemplo.

Isis Lawrence, quien es colaboradora de la fábrica de cigarros Tabacalera de García desde hace 12 años, entiende que el momento de fumar es muy personal. Y si se tiene la oportunidad, se puede planificar la fumada, se puede elegir a una persona como compañía, un lugar y hasta una bebida. La fumada puede ser social, porque se puede hacer entre varias personas, o íntima.

Este sentimiento es compartido por Rubén González, empresario del sector tabacalero y muy reconocido en la comunidad de

Campo community. He is the founder of Cigar Country, a cigar distribution company. González, although he is aware that everything in excess can be harmful, agrees with Lawrence that it doesn’t seem as harmful as other tobacco products if used responsibly and in moderation. “I’ve been in the cigar industry for seven years, and all my colleagues die of old age, working and healthy,” he says.

González explains that for him, smoking is about stimulating the palate. It is sensory. He indicates that an average cigar can last from 45 minutes to an hour, which forces you to relax and enjoy. However, Rubén González has been smoking since he was a teenager and does not consider himself a compulsive smoker, even though he always has to be trying new brands and products due to the dynamics of his job. The same goes for Isis Lawrence. She can smoke two or three cigars a day at most. González can smoke up to seven cigars a week, he says.

But smoking isn’t only about relaxation. It can also be about memories. “When I smoke alone at home, I try to connect with the cigar and look for what the cigar has for me ... those flavors, those nuances,” says Lawrence, who has been smoking cigars since she was 25 years old. “There are flavors that connect me with some experience.”

PREFERENCES

Smoking cigars is not complicated. At least, that’s how Ruben González sees it. He sums it up by cutting the part that is capped, lighting the other end and drawing in the smoke without taking it into the lungs. That’s it.

However, Lawrence is more specific. She explains that there are different cigar cuts, such as the v-cut, the traditional cut and the punch cut. She likes the punch, which is made with a tool that punctures the head of the cigar and makes a small circle where the smoke is sucked in.

When smoking, she uses the retronasal technique, which is, essentially, blowing the smoke out your nose. The technique gives more contact with the smoke, and the sensitive olfactory nerves can detect even more flavors and nuances. She also likes to light cigars with matches, although she understands that others prefer the traditional lighter. It all depends on the tastes of each person.

“The nice thing about smoking is that you allow that moment to be a moment of relaxation, learning, you don’t have to speed up the time,” she says. “You don’t have to force anything. It’s about sitting down and enjoying your cigar.”

Lawrence and González love to smoke at the end of the day. It’s the time when they have the most peace and quiet. And they both love to smoke natural cigars, without any flavor or chemicals, to appreciate the tobacco’s true flavor.

Rubén González, aunque está consciente de que todo en exceso puede hacer daño, coincide con Isis de que no es perjudicial si se realiza con responsabilidad. “Yo llevo 7 años en la industria y todos mis colegas mueren de viejo trabajando y saludable”, presume. González explica que para él fumar es estimular el paladar, es sensorial. Indica que un cigarro promedio puede durar fumándose de 45 minutos a una hora, lo que obliga al consumidor a relajarse y a disfrutar. Sin embargo, él fuma desde adolescente y no se considera un fumador compulsivo, pese a que debe estar siempre probando nuevas marcas y productos debido a la dinámica de su trabajo.

Lo mismo sucede con Isis Lawrence. Ella puede fumar por gusto dos o tres cigarros al día como máximo. González puede fumar hasta 7 cigarros a la semana, asegura.

Pero fumar puros no es sólo relajación, también puede evocar recuerdos. “Cuando fumo sola en la casa trato de conectar con el cigarro, y buscar que el cigarro tiene para mi… esos sabores, esos matices”, opina Lawrence, quien lleva fumando puro desde los 25 años. “Hay sabores que me conectan con alguna vivencia”.

PREFERENCIAS

Fumar puros no es nada complicado. Al menos así lo considera Rubén González, quien lo resume en solo cortar la parte que está cerrada e inhalar el humo, sin llevarlo a los pulmones. Listo.

“Smoking flavored cigars is like a 12-year-old whiskey mixed with Coca-Cola,” says González. “Usually, flavored cigars are cheap. I think anyone who adds flavor to the cigar, it is because they don’t appreciate the real flavor.”

WOMEN AND CIGARS: THE CHALLENGES OF A WOMAN AND MOTHER WHO SMOKES

Some time ago, it was said that cigars were for men. But that’s gone now, Lawrence proudly points out. Tobacco is a product that both men and women can enjoy with the same intensity and appreciation. There are many women in the tobacco industry today, as well as in the manufacturing sector, and there are also women leading tobacco companies and representing them around the world. And, of course, there are those who consume.

“Everything we women touch, we embellish,” says Lawrence, who feels that, in cigar clubs, where there is usually more of a male presence, women add a special touch. She affirms that women in the tobacco industry enjoy a lot of acceptance, and that is what has allowed them to play a very important role in this sector.

THE DOMINICAN INDUSTRY

When questioned about the current state of the tobacco industry in the Dominican Republic, Rubén González points out that it is at its best moment because the pandemic brought about a “boom” in cigar consumption.

“Cuba fared very badly with the pandemic because they didn’t handle it the same way we did,” says González. “Their factories were closed for months, and here, they only lasted four weeks at the most. The Dominican Republic has taken in-

cional y el ponche. A ella le gusta el ponche, que se realiza con una herramienta con la que se pincha la cabecita del cigarro y se hace un pequeño círculo que es por donde se succiona.

Con relación al humo, utiliza una técnica llamada retronasal, que consiste, esencialmente, en soplar el humo por la nariz. Esta técnica permite un mayor contacto con el humo, y de esta manera, los nervios olfativos pueden detectar aún más sabores y matices. También le gusta encender el puro con fósforos, aunque entiende que otros prefieren el encendedor tradicional. Todo depende de los gustos de cada quien.

“Lo bonito de fumar es que tu permites que ese momento sea de relajación, aprendizaje, no hay que acelerar el tiempo. No hay que forzar a nada. Eso es sentarse y disfrutar tu cigarro”, manifiesta.

A Lawrence y a González les encanta fumar al final del día. Pues es el momento en el cual tienen más tranquilidad. Y a ambos les encanta fumar puros naturales, sin ningún tipo de sabor o químico, para así apreciar el verdadero sabor del tabaco.

“Fumar puros con sabor es como un whiskey 12 años mezclado con Cocacola. Por lo general, los puros saborizados son baratos. Creo que el que le añade sabor al puro es porque no le gusta. No aprecia el verdadero sabor”, comenta González.

UNA MUJER Y MADRE FUMADORA: RETOS

Hace un tiempo atrás se decía que los puros eran para hombres. Pero eso ya pasó, resalta con orgullo Lawrence. El tabaco es un producto que tanto el hombre como la mujer lo pueden disfrutar con la misma intensidad y apreciación.

Actualmente hay muchas mujeres dentro de la industria del tabaco, como en el sector de manufactura, también hay mujeres que lideran empresas de tabaco y que la representan por todo el mundo, y claro, están las que consumen. “Todo lo que las mujeres tocamos lo embellecemos”, garantiza Lawrence, quien siente que, en los clubes de fumadores, en los cuales generalmente hay más presencia masculina, las mujeres le dan un toque especial.

Asegura que las mujeres en la industria del tabaco gozan de mucha aceptación, y es lo que ha propiciado que las mismas desempeñen un rol muy importante en este sector.

INDUSTRIA DOMINICANA

Al ser cuestionado sobre cómo se encuentra la industria del tabaco en República Dominicana actualmente, Rubén González señala que está en su mejor momento, porque la pandemia trajo un “boom” en el consumo del puro.

“A Cuba le fue muy mal con la pandemia, ya que no se manejó igual que nosotros. Sus fábricas duraron meses cerradas, y aquí solo duraron como 4 semanas como mucho. República Dominicana le ha quitado mercado internacionales a Cuba. Y creció en los que ya tenía”, argumentó González.

In 2023, tobacco started off on a good footing; in January, its foreign sales totaled US$79.1 million. This indicates a 17% increase, equivalent to US$11.5 million, over what was reported in the same month of 2022, according to the Dominican customs department, Dirección General de Aduanas.

“Tobacco and cigars are the products of agricultural origin that produce the most foreign exchange to the country, reaching more than UN$1,200,000,000, a product of the export of cigars to more than 140 countries that proudly carry a message of ‘Made in the Dominican Republic,’” Hendrik Kelner, the president of Procigar, told the local press.

CIGAR STORES IN CASA DE CAMPO

Within the Casa de Campo complex, a great variety of tobacco cigars can be found, sold by different stores.

Among them is the Fumo store, which is in El Pórtico de Sotavento in La Marina. This store has cigars of different brands, with prices ranging from US$6.00 to US$80.00.

Meanwhile, in Altos de Chavón, Dominican cigars can be found at the Dominican Things gift shop.

At Cabinet, there are accessories and a smoking area in addition to Nicaraguan, Cuban and Dominican cigars. Smoke ’em if you got ’em!

En este 2023 el tabaco inició con buen pie, pues en enero sus ventas externas sumaron US$79.1 millones. Esto indica un 17% más, que equivale a US$11.5 millones, con respecto a lo reportado en igual mes del 2022, de acuerdo a la Dirección General de Aduanas (DGA).

There are more than 2,000 distinct species of palm trees in the world. Approximately 142 are native to the Caribbean, 35 of them to the island of Hispaniola, of which an estimated 23 cannot be found in any other part of the globe, and 15 are listed as in danger of extinction.

This international symbol for the tropics and vacations — and the Dominican Republic — has played a significant role for humans throughout history, and as one of the world’s most wellknown and extensively cultivated plant families, it is also one of the most economically important plants. Modern palm tree species date back more than 60 million years and have been used by humans since our existence began. Evidence suggests that the first palms used by humans were the date palms of the Middle East more than 5,000 years ago.

The palma real (Roystonea borinquena), found throughout Casa de Campo, is native to Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. This palm tree is revered as a national symbol, with its palm fronds appearing on the Dominican coat of arms, as well as on those of a number of its provinces and the national university, the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo.

Hay más de 2,000 especies distintas de palmeras en el mundo. Aproximadamente 142 son nativas del Caribe, 35 de ellas de la isla de La Hispaniola, de las cuales se calcula que 23 no se encuentran en ninguna otra parte del globo, y 15 están catalogadas en peligro de extinción.

Este símbolo internacional de los trópicos y las vacaciones –y de la República Dominicana– ha desempeñado un papel importante para el ser humano a lo largo de la historia y, como una de las familias de plantas más conocidas y cultivadas del mundo, es también una de las más importantes desde el punto de vista económico. Las especies modernas de palmeras datan de hace más de 60 millones de años y han sido utilizadas por los seres humanos desde el comienzo de nuestra existencia. Las pruebas sugieren que las primeras palmeras utilizadas por los humanos fueron las palmeras datileras de Oriente Medio hace más de 5.000 años.

La palma real (Roystonea borinquena), que aparece en los alrededores de Casa de Campo, es originaria de La Hispaniola, Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes. Esta palmera es venerada como símbolo nacional, y sus hojas aparecen en el escudo de armas dominicano, así como en el de varias provincias y en el de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo.

Colombia’s national tree, the Quindio wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense) can grow up to 60 meters high; the coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica) of the Republic of Seychelles has the largest seed of any plant, known as the “love nut” and weighing up to 30 kilograms, while the raffia palms (Raphia) of Africa’s tropical regions grow leaves up to 25 meters long — the largest in the world. Meanwhile, here on the island of Hispaniola, the zombie palm (Zombia antillarum), an endemic and endangered species, has a trunk completely covered in spines.

Around the world, the fruits, leaves, and wood of palms are used in dozens of different ways. Palm sap can be fermented to produce palm wine, a practice that is common across Africa, India, and the Philippines, while the fruit of the areca palm (Dypsis lutescens), found in China and India, can be chewed for intoxicating effects.

Here in the Dominican Republic, palms are widely used in the construction of houses, in fencing and landscaping, and in crafting a wide range of woven products for domestic use and the tourist trade. To the side of the St. Stanislaus Church in Altos de Chavón, a Dominican artisan can be found weaving traditional baskets and hats out of the leaves of the Hispaniola palmetto (Sabal domingensis). This palm was used traditionally by the Taíno people, who used the dry leaves to create roofs for their huts, called bohíos. En toda la Casa de Campo, este estilo de techo de palma con paja puede verse en el restaurante Lago y en las diversas áreas de descanso repartidas por los campos de golf, así como en los cenadores de docenas de villas privadas. Originaria de esta isla, la palmera de La Hispaniola se conoce como “Palma Cana”, de ahí el nombre coloquial “La Cana” de la entrada principal de Casa de Campo. Pero esa palmera no es la única.

You may think you know what a palm looks like. Most are distinguished by the large evergreen crown of leaves at the top of an unbranched stem, but within this plant family exists an enormous diversity of physical characteristics — even among those that essentially look the same. Just take a look around the resort. As you whizz around in your golf cart, you will be astounded at the number of types you spot and how different they are.

With its long, thin, gracefully curved trunk and coconut fruit, the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is easy to identify. The world-famous coconut tree was introduced to the Dominican Republic in the 16th century when Europeans first reached the island. Meanwhile, the majestic royal palm or palma real, native to the country, stands proudly erect; thick, solid and very straight. Both are prolific across Casa de Campo; Minitas Beach is full of coconut palms, while royal palms, one of the most ornamentally valuable palm trees, are an essential feature in many Casa gardens. Used extensively throughout Casa in landscaping, a magnificent array of palm species can be spotted at every turn. However, most are not endemic or native to the Dominican Republic — or even to the Caribbean.

Also growing in abundance all across the resort are traveler’s palms (Ravenala madagascariensis). Instantly recognizable for their enormous paddle-shaped leaves, which grow in a fan formation, they are in fact not true palms and belong to the same plant family as the banana tree. Also commonly mistaken for a palm tree is the Japanese sago palm (Cycad revoluta). This ornamental plant is native to Japan, and the largest commercial plantation of it in the world is found in Sabana de la Mar, in the north of the

En el paisaje de Casa se puede observar una magnífica variedad de especies de palmeras. Sin embargo, la mayoría no son endémicas ni nativas de la República Dominicana, ni siquiera del Caribe.

También crecen en abundancia por todo el complejo las palmas del viajero (Ravenala madagascariensis). Reconocibles al instante por sus enormes hojas en forma de paleta, que crecen en abanico, en realidad no son verdaderas palmeras y pertenecen a la misma familia de plantas que el plátano. La palmera japonesa del sagú (Cycad revoluta) también suele confundirse con una palmera. Esta planta ornamental es originaria de Japón, y la mayor plantación comercial del mundo se encuentra en Sabana de la Mar, al norte de la República Dominicana, y es propiedad de Costa Farms, con sede aquí, en La Romana. While countless other endemic, native and introduced palm species can be found flourishing throughout Casa, in addition to those already mentioned, some others you may be able to identify include the hurricane palm (Dictyosperma album), spindle palm (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii), date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), pygmy date palm (Phoenix roebelenii), queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), footstool palm (Saribus rotundifolius) and bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii).

Many of the species that provide the magnificent landscaping we enjoy every day hail from far-flung corners of the world: the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis); the aforementioned footstool palm from Southeast Asia; the Mediterranean dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis), native to continental Europe; the Manila or “Christmas” palm (Veitchia merrillii) from the Philippines, named after its bright red fruit; and the Mexican fan palm (Washingtonia robusta), featured above, which grows up to 30 meters high, are just a few examples.

Palm trees are more than just a symbol of tropical getaways and relaxation. They are a remarkable and diverse plant family with a rich history. From endangered species found only on the island of Hispaniola to the towering palms of Colombia, the breadth of palm tree diversity is nothing short of incredible. In the Dominican Republic, these trees are an integral part of construction, crafts and landscaping, adding to the country’s unique cultural and visual identity. As we marvel at the various types of palms around us, let us also appreciate their many contributions to our lives and to the world at large. Whether it’s the stately palma real, the versatile coconut palm, or the Hispaniola palmetto, Casa de Campo is a treasure trove of different species, each with unique characteristics and uses.

Get ready for the upcoming Fundación MIR family weekend, a highlight of the summer season! On August 12, we will celebrate Mission International Rescue and its efforts to provide education, healthcare and housing for underprivileged youth in La Romana. This annual event is a perfect opportunity for family and friends to have fun in Casa de Campo. Residents, visitors and villa owners can look forward to a fantastic day of golf, a tennis tournament and a kids’ tennis clinic, followed by a traditional dinner and awards ceremony. NEW DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM LA ROMANA

RED Air and Laser Airlines are offering international flights from La Romana International Airport, providing greater access to more international destinations for residents and guests. RED Air will have two daily flights to Miami with an attractive fare scheme for customers residing in nearby areas, while Laser Airlines will operate flights between Caracas and the Dominican Republic with subsequent connections. La Romana International Airport has infrastructure and facilities designed to provide all airport amenities to travelers, including attractive commercial establishments and varied gastronomic spaces, making waiting times pleasant for customers.

RED Air y Laser Airlines están ofreciendo vuelos internacionales desde el Aeropuerto Internacional de La Romana, proporcionando un mayor acceso a más destinos internacionales para los residentes y huéspedes. RED Air tendrá dos vuelos diarios a Miami con un atractivo esquema de tarifas para clientes residentes en zonas cercanas, mientras que Laser Airlines operará vuelos entre Caracas y República Dominicana con conexiones posteriores. NEW SPA AND WELLNESS CENTER AT CASA DE CAMPO

THE SPA AT CASA DE CAMPO is set to open by the summer of 2023, offering guests an elevated wellness experience with cutting-edge treatments. Located within the beautiful Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, the spa features 13 luxuriously appointed treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy circuit and a “spa within a spa” for VIPs. The spa’s menu of treatments includes jet peel facials, triple detox therapy and binaural acoustic and dynamic stimulation. Guests can also relax and refuel at the spa cafe and juice bar and browse the retail spa and wellness boutique for products to continue their wellness journey at home. For more, see page 66.
