There are many interesting and unique things one can name about Casa de Campo — the incredible golf, the world-class shooting, the amazing amenities, the architecture … the list goes on and on. Ultimately, what really sets Casa de Campo apart is its people and its community. One moment, you can be sitting and enjoying an ice-cold Presidente after a grueling 18 holes on the Teeth of the Dog, and the next, you can strike up a conversation with a fellow golfer and commiserate about the number of balls lost, the viciousness of the wind or the newest model clubs that promised to shave a few yards but fell a little short. You just never know who that person might be and what wealth of interesting and unique stories they may have to share.

Over the decades I spent growing up on the property, I can remember having the most fascinating conversations with people, only to learn at a later date just who I had been talking to. I can remember having incredible conversations about the potential of the internet with Vint Cert, one of the fathers of the internet; touching on the sci-fi-esque potential of space tourism with Richard Branson; or sharing gripes about the difficulty of playing the Teeth of the Dog with Pete Dye, only to be told why he designed it that specific way intentionally. This can also lead to the most hilarious encounters, such as when my now-wife — who is British and knows nothing about American sports — asked baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez if the big ring he was wearing was for the Super Bowl. Which reminds me, you may also meet the person you decide to spend the rest of your life with, as was the case for me.

As we continue to celebrate 50 years of Casa de Campo, I want to recognize that the foundation that makes this place so special goes far beyond the surface; it is really made up of all the incredible people who work or live here, the guests who have left their mark and the vibrant community that, every day, makes this not just a destination but, for many, a home — their Casa.

Hay muchas cosas interesantes y únicas que se pueden mencionar sobre Casa de Campo: el increíble golf, el tiro de clase mundial, las increíbles comodidades, la arquitectura... la lista continúa. Pero lo que realmente distingue a Casa de Campo es su gente y su comunidad. En un momento, puedes estar sentado disfrutando de una Presidente bien fría después de 18 hoyos agotadores en los Dientes del Perro, y al siguiente, puedes entablar una conversación con otro golfista y lamentarte por la cantidad de bolas perdidas, la ferocidad del viento o los nuevos modelos de palos que prometían ganar unos metros pero se quedaron cortos. Nunca sabes con quién puedes encontrarte y qué riqueza de historias interesantes y únicas pueden tener para compartir.

Crecer en la propiedad me brindó la oportunidad de tener conversaciones fascinantes con distintas personas. Recuerdo haber discutido el potencial del internet con Vint Cert, uno de los padres de internet, el potencial de ciencia ficción del turismo espacial con Richard Branson, y las complejidades del campo de golf Dientes del Perro con Pete Dye, solo para que me explicara qué lo diseñó de esa manera intencionalmente. Estas experiencias también pueden llevar a encuentros más divertidos, como cuando mi esposa británica, ajena a los deportes americanos, le preguntó al superastro del béisbol Alex Rodríguez si el gran anillo que llevaba puesto era para el Super Bowl. De hecho, aquí también puedes encontrar a la persona con la que decides pasar el resto de tu vida, como fue mi caso.

Hogar del Niño Weekend

The 27th annual Hogar del Niño Weekend was held on Feb. 17, 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness and aid for the Patronato Benéficio Oriental’s organization and schools through fundraising activities. Attendees enjoyed traditional golf and tennis tournaments, yoga, padel and pickleball tournaments, and an upcycling workshop led by artist Jaqueline Severino. The day culminated in a dinner party at La Romana Country Club, where the winners and participants of the various games celebrated the days’ activities. Guests enjoyed a delectable meal and after dinner, attendees didn’t take long to hit the dance floor and groove to the tunes of La Boba Band accompanied by Adalgisa Pantaleón, ending an incredible weekend of supporting a wonderful cause.

El vigésimo séptimo fin de semana anual del Hogar del Niño se llevó a cabo el 17 de febrero de 2024. El evento tuvo como objetivo crear conciencia y brindar ayuda a la organización y escuelas del Patronato Benéfico Oriental a través de actividades de recaudación de fondos. Los asistentes disfrutaron de torneos tradicionales de golf y tenis, yoga, padel y pickleball, y un taller de reutilización de prendas de ropa dirigido por la artista Jaqueline Severino. El día culminó con una cena y fiesta en el La Romana Country Club, donde los ganadores y participantes de los diversos juegos celebraron las actividades del día. CASA DE CAMPO is really an extraordinary place. Growing up I remember Pete Dye more as our neighbor from down the street than I did the golf legend he truly was.

Pete Dye was one of the most influential golf course architects of the last 100 years. He was recognized as the father of modern golf course architecture due to his innovative and environmentally friendly designs, and his love of design gained him considerable respect and fame. For Casa de Campo, Pete Dye designed all four golf courses: Teeth of the Dog, Links, the private La Romana Country Club and Dye Fore.

The breathtakingly beautiful Teeth of the Dog course has been named the number one golf course in the Caribbean and is ranked by Golf Digest as the 20th best golf course in the world, outside the US.

CASA DE CAMPO es verdaderamente un lugar extraordinario. Cuando era niño, recuerdo a Pete Dye más como nuestro vecino de al lado que como la leyenda del golf que realmente era.

Pete Dye fue uno de los arquitectos de campos de golf más influyentes de los últimos 100 años. This Pete Dye classic stretches up to 7,471 yards of stunning scenery along a rocky Caribbean coastline. Teeth of the Dog was built in 1971, and three years later, it served as the host for the World Amateur Team Championship.

Dye’s second work, Links, is a moderately hilly track that features well-contoured greens and narrow fairways. La Romana Country Club was built for the private membership experience; though very challenging, it is also very playable for the average golfer.

Finally, the astonishing Dye Fore, built in 2003, measures a daunting 7,714 yards from the back tees. While playing Dye Fore, you will experience beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea, the Chavón River, the marina and the artisan village of Altos de Chavón. Dye Fore is comparable to Teeth of the Dog for its spectacular vistas.

BUT FOR ME, HE WAS OUR NEIGHBOR.

Dye’s home, Costa Vedre #10, was as unique as it was a beautiful property, overlooking hole number #7 of the Teeth of the Dog. The house was more of a small compound: a series of smaller structures each independent of each other, with thatch roofs and local rocks giving it a rustic style that blended into its surroundings which kept it spiritually anchored to the early days of the resort. It was a simple, magical oasis in time.

Dye had a special place in his heart for Casa de Campo. Beyond being a brilliant architect of some of the finest courses in the world, he was also a member of the community. Dye was also very humble, known for saying, “I created eleven holes and God created seven.” Those seven ocean-front holes show off Casa de Campo’s natural beauty and Dye’s humility. In that respect, he is reminiscent of Michelangelo: chipping away at the rocky coast of La Romana during

Altos de Chavón. Dye Fore es comparable a Teeth of the Dog por sus vistas espectaculares.

PERO PARA MÍ, ÉL ERA NUESTRO VECINO.

La casa de Dye, Costa Vedre #10, era tan única como hermosa, con vistas al hoyo número 7 de Teeth of the Dog. La casa era más como un pequeño complejo: una serie de estructuras más pequeñas e independientes entre sí, con techos de paja y rocas locales que le daban un estilo rústico que se fundía con su entorno, lo que la mantenía espiritualmente anclada a los primeros días del resort. It was not until I started my first publishing venture, that I thought to ask him for an interview, which he kindly agreed to.

While Dye passed away on January 9, 2020, at the age of 94 in La Romana, his legacy — and courses — live on. As Casa de Campo celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, let’s take a moment to look back on a 2007 CasaLife interview with the golf great. So as we celebrate Casa de Campo’s 50 years, here is our previously published conversation — and some of the images from his personal photo album. Like several in our community, I was fortunate enough to have been able to spend a little time with him on various occasions, and I’m further blessed to be able to share a little of that here.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH CASA DE CAMPO?

I came to the Dominican Republic in 1968 with the purpose of building a golf course in its capital, but the project didn’t materialize because the ground wasn’t the best, and there were lots of complications.

At the time, I asked to see other pieces of land that could work, and someone brought me out here to La Romana. It was difficult just to travel here. We had to go 10 miles north, cross the river and take some dirt roads through San Pedro de Macorís to get there. But when I

saw it, I knew it had potential. I immediately thought it was a great place to develop a resort, and naturally, everyone thought I was crazy ... so I went back to the States.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

I came back with a contract to fix an old nine-hole golf course located in the bean fields of Caletón. At the time, there were plans of building an industrial free zone down where Punta Aguila is, right on the ocean. So I took a trip there when they were just clearing out the land. I realized it was a great spot for a golf course and started pushing for it until [Teeth of the Dog] was built. Now, we’ve got 18 holes out here.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CASA DE CAMPO?

Here, you can find the best year-round climate in the Caribbean. It’s dryer, and you have the Chavón River right there as a water source for the golf courses. It’s difficult to find that combination anywhere else. At the time, this area was not being used — it wasn’t even productive for cattle! It was just sitting here, with all its greatness.

Throughout the last 15 years, I brought down several major resorts in the United States that decided to build here. … Claudio Silvestri [the former president of Casa de Campo] came down, and the first thing he did was to give its name: Casa de Campo Beach and Golf Resort.

Although there ain’t much of a beach here [laughter].

DO YOU FEEL IT SHOULD BE MORE OF A GOLF RESORT THAN A BEACH RESORT?

Definitely! I think we should highlight this aspect much more. Casa de Campo is an amazing golf resort, although everyone thinks it’s something else. It could be very beneficial for us to get international golf tournaments played here and let the world know we are into golfing. The magazines refer to Teeth of the Dog as one of the best golf courses in the world.

¿CUÁL ES LA HISTORIA DETRÁS DE TU PARTICIPACIÓN EN CASA DE CAMPO?

Llegué a la República Dominicana en 1968 con el propósito de construir un campo de golf en su capital, pero el proyecto no se materializó porque el terreno no era el mejor y había muchas complicaciones. En ese momento, pedí ver otros terrenos que pudieran funcionar, y alguien me trajo aquí a La Romana. Fue difícil llegar hasta aquí. Tuvimos que ir 16 kilómetros al norte, cruzar el río y tomar algunos caminos de tierra a través de San Pedro de Macorís para llegar aquí. Pero cuando lo vi, supe que tenía potencial. Inmediatamente pensé que era un gran lugar para desarrollar un resort, y naturalmente, todos pensaron que estaba loco... así que regresé a los Estados Unidos. ¿QUÉ PASÓ DESPUÉS?

Regresé con un contrato para arreglar un antiguo campo de golf de nueve hoyos ubicado en los campos de frijoles de Caletón. En ese momento, había planes de construir una zona franca industrial donde está Punta Aguila, justo en el océano. Así que hice un viaje allí cuando apenas estaban despejando el terreno. THE DYE FORE HAS NOT OFFICIALLY GOTTEN A RANKING — WHY? IS IT TOO YOUNG?

In order for any golf course to be ranked, there are certain things that must be done. We have to get the right people to come down here. We must invite the most prominent golfers in the world to visit us. You can’t just have a golf course sitting there. We cannot lose our momentum.

Yes, now there are several golf courses that have merit. When I came down here for the first time, there was only one course, at the Santo Domingo Country Club, and that was it.

Now, we have a lot more competition, and that is something good since the country is becoming known for it. But it will help if we promote golf events and attract professionals from around the world — not just Tiger Woods, but many more.

¿SIENTES QUE DEBERÍA SER MÁS UN RESORT DE GOLF QUE UN RESORT DE PLAYA?

¡Definitivamente! Creo que deberíamos resaltar este aspecto mucho más. Casa de Campo es un resort de golf increíble, aunque todos piensan que es algo más. Podría ser muy beneficioso para nosotros tener torneos internacionales de golf aquí y hacerle saber al mundo que estamos metidos en el golf. Las revistas se refieren a Teeth of the Dog como uno de los mejores campos de golf del mundo.

DYE FORE NO HA OBTENIDO OFICIALMENTE UNA CLASIFICACIÓN, ¿POR QUÉ? ¿ES DEMASIADO JOVEN?

Para que cualquier campo de golf sea clasificado, hay ciertas cosas que deben hacerse. Tenemos que hacer que vengan las personas adecuadas aquí. Debemos invitar a los golfistas más prominentes del mundo a visitarnos. No puedes simplemente tener un campo de golf sentado allí. No podemos perder nuestro impulso.

The Fundación MIR Golf for Education Tournament 2024 took place on Jan. 13 at La Romana Country Club. With over 100 players rallying for philanthropy, the event successfully brought the community together. IT WAS A SERENE EVENING IN 2022. A casual conversation among friends visiting Casa de Campo gave rise to an unprecedented event in the world of female polo in the Dominican Republic. Carolina Rayner, an Argentine entrepreneur and equestrian sports enthusiast, shares her captivating story of the creation of the first and second International Ladies Polo Cup at Casa de Campo and her challenges as a female leader in this competitive field.

FORGING AN IDEA: INTERNATIONAL LADIES POLO CUP

The spark that ignited women’s polo at Casa de Campo occurred during a conversation between Rayner, Argentine polo player Malena Colombo and Pato Panzarasa, director of the Argentine Women’s Polo Circuit and The Polo Box. They realized the need to organize similar events in Casa de Campo, not just as an excuse to gather but also as an opportunity to promote women’s sports in the region.

Enthusiastic support from Dr. Fernando Arata, the director of Casa de Campo’s Equestrian and Polo Center, turned this idea from a friendly chat into a reality. What started as a desire to reconnect transformed into the first International Ladies Polo Cup at Casa de Campo. In addition to the sporting event, this initiative also contributed to the Patronato Benéfico Oriental “Madres Maravillas” program, supporting unemployed women and empowering them to start their own ventures.

But Rayner has learned that finding balance is an ongoing process. Saying no, setting priorities and delegating are key skills that allow her to maintain a harmonious balance between her business responsibilities and her personal life.

“You need courage, persistence, knowledge of the polo world and a clear vision,” says Rayner.

The Marina Riverside in Casa de Campo hosted the annual Adopt-a-Crib dinner on Feb. 24, 2024 celebrating funds raised for the Hogar del Niño. The exclusive cocktail party recognized the contributions of the Casa de Campo community to the Adopt-a-Crib program, which supports the education and care of children in La Romana. Every person in attendance has donated at least US$1,000 annually to the program, which cares for more than 200 babies and over 1,700 children daily. The event showcased the community’s unity and generosity in supporting the Hogar del Niño mission.

On Feb. 2, Casa de Campo and WAO Gallery welcomed art enthusiasts for the captivating Hirschfeld’s Icons exhibition honoring the legendary American illustrator Al Hirschfeld. Curated by David Leopold of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation, the showcase featured 24 iconic works spanning theater, cinema, music and television, all captured in Hirschfeld’s distinctive linear style. Jason Kycek, the senior vice president of sales and marketing at Casa de Campo, emphasized the exhibition’s significance for art lovers, offering a unique opportunity to delve into Hirschfeld’s magic. XAVIER ROSELLÓ’S FUSION OF ART AND DESIGN

XAVIER ROSELLÓ is a trained interior designer and a passionate artist, and his artistic journey seamlessly integrates two distinct worlds, each enriching the other harmoniously. Ten years ago, Roselló was invited to join the Chavón School of Design as an international lecturer. This marked the beginning of a long-lasting relationship. This year, Roselló was appointed as the coordinator for the school’s interior and product design career path. His aim is to showcase and develop Dominican talent and empower young designers to stand out. Roselló’s work caught our attention during his recent visit to Altos de Chavón when he created a stunning series of illustrations of the artists’ village.

In this interview, we delve into the motivations and inspirations driving his artistic endeavors, exploring how he combines his personal artistic expression and his professional practice.

HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR ART AND INTERIOR DESIGN ARISE?

I am an interior designer with formal training and an artist by vocation. Having both hemispheres in my brain has benefited me, allowing me to complement my profession with my artistic expression. My design proposals for my projects have a significant dose of artistic expression, which helps me greatly in selling interior design, as this skill is uncommon in the profession. Understanding a formal creative process in design has given me high productivity in art and has helped me grow as an artist to the point of blurring what could be a boundary between one thing and another. I can’t remember when the passion for both arose, making me think I was born with that DNA. I have been nurturing, refining and perfecting it over the years. That’s what I’m about ... You should never stop improving.

Xavier Roselló, diseñador de interiores y artista apasionado, integra de manera fluida dos mundos distintos en su viaje artistico, enriqueciéndose mutuamente de manera armoniosa. Hace diez años, Roselló fue invitado a unirse a Chavón Escuela de Diseño como conferencista internacional, marcando el incio de una relación duradera. Este año, Roselló fue nombrado coordinador de la carrera de diseño de interiores y productos de la escuela, con el objetivo de destacar y desarrollar el talento dominicano y empoderar a los jóvenes diseñadores para que sobresalgan. El trabajo de Roselló llamó nuestra atención durante su reciente visita a Altos de Chavón, donde creó una impresionante serie de ilustraciones del pueblo de artistas.

En esta entrevista, exploramos las motivaciones e inspiraciones que impulsan sus esfuerzos artísticos, y cómo combina su expresión artística personal con su práctica profesional.

¿CÓMO SURGIÓ TU PASIÓN POR EL ARTE Y EL DISEÑO DE INTERIORES?

Soy diseñador de interiores de formación y artista por vocación. Tener ambos hemisferios en mi cerebro me ha beneficiado, permitiéndome complementar mi profesión con mi expresión artística. Mis propuestas de diseño para mis proyectos tienen una dosis significativa de expresión artística, lo que me ayuda mucho en la venta de diseño de interiores, ya que esta habilidad es poco común en la profesión. Comprender un proceso creativo formal en el diseño me ha dado una alta productividad en el arte y me ha ayudado a crecer como artista hasta el punto de difuminar lo que podría ser un límite entre una cosa y otra. No recuerdo cuándo surgió la pasión por ambas,haciéndome pensar que nací con ese ADN. Lo he estado nutriendo, refinando y perfeccionando a lo largo de los años. De eso se trata ... nunca debes dejar de mejorar.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DESIGN SPACES? WHAT FEELINGS DO YOU WANT TO EVOKE IN PEOPLE WITH YOUR WORK?

I am motivated by the desire to enhance people’s living spaces. My design process is centered around working with people for people. I always keep in mind that the spaces I create should enable them to eat and rest better, improve their self-confidence, increase sales in their businesses and allow them to relax during their free time. The spaces I design should provide pleasant experiences and sensations and serve as a corner of refuge for the users. I put myself in the user’s shoes to ensure I deliver designs that are functional and easy to use.

HOW DO YOU COMBINE DRAWING WITH INTERIOR DESIGN?

Drawing plays a fundamental role in my work. I begin by sketching in my initial meeting with the client, using my drawings to convey my ideas about volume, materiality and chromaticism. This helps me to guide my viewer through the creative process, starting with more artistic explorations and eventually arriving at the right solution.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?

One of my objectives is to showcase and continue developing Dominican talent in the area of interior design. I believe that most interior design projects should emerge locally. Still, I also recognize the importance of having a global perspective and profile, allowing us to export our work and remain competitive.

HAVE ANY ARTISTS, DESIGNERS OR ARTISTIC MOVEMENTS INFLUENCED YOUR WORK?

To me, good interior design begins with a solid understanding of architecture. Whether it’s the current big names or the pioneers who established interior design globally, their work is undoubtedly inspiring. Good design is something that stands the test of time, and there are many lesser-known designers who are doing excellent work. With the easy access to information that we have today, it’s clear that these design principles have been affirmed.

WITH WHAT MEDIUMS (MATERIALS, OBJECTS) DO YOU MAINLY WORK WITH?

I may sound a bit bohemian, but I prefer to start my designs with paper and a pencil. Later, depending on the project’s requirements, I supplement it with digital tools, materials and other elements. For me, there’s no better way to begin the design process than through freehand expression.

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

The creative process in interior design is often initiated by specific needs set by others. This leads to the formulation of a formal proposal, which is then developed through various stages, starting with an approach, followed by development and planning for execution. In contrast, the creative process in art is driven by a personal need to express oneself artistically. When it comes to my own artistic work, I draw inspiration from architecture and landscapes. My goal is to capture and reflect my perception of the place without losing its unique identity recognizable to anyone.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES OR SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS AS AN ARTIST AND/OR DESIGNER?

¿QUÉ TE INSPIRÓ A DISEÑAR ESPACIOS? ¿QUÉ SENTIMIENTOS QUIERES EVOCAR EN LAS PERSONAS CON TU TRABAJO?

Me motiva el deseo de mejorar los espacios vitales de las personas. Mi proceso de diseño se centra en trabajar con y para personas. Siempre tengo en cuenta que los espacios que creo deben permitirles comer y descansar mejor, mejorar su autoconfianza, aumentar las ventas en sus negocios y permitirles relajarse durante su tiempo libre. Los espacios que diseño deben brindar experiencias y sensaciones agradables y servir como un rincón de refugio para los usuarios. Me pongo en los zapatos del usuario para asegurarme de entregar diseños que sean funcionales y fáciles de usar.

¿CÓMO COMBINAS EL DIBUJO CON EL DISEÑO DE INTERIORES?

El dibujo juega un papel fundamental en mi trabajo. Comienzo dibujando en mi reunión inicial con el cliente, usando mis dibujos para transmitir mis ideas sobre volumen, materialidad y cromatismo. Esto me ayuda a guiar a mi espectador a través del proceso creativo, comenzando con exploraciones más artísticas y eventualmente llegando a la solución correcta.

¿CUÁL ES TU OPINIÓN SOBRE EL DESARROLLO DEL DISEÑO DE INTERIORES EN LA REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA?

Uno de mis objetivos es destacar y continuar desarrollando el talento dominicano en el área del diseño de interiores. Creo que la mayoría de los proyectos de diseño de interiores deben surgir localmente, pero también reconozco la importancia de tener una perspectiva y perfil global, lo que nos permite exportar nuestro trabajo y mantenernos competitivos.

¿ALGUNOS ARTISTAS, DISEÑADORES O MOVIMIENTOS ARTÍSTICOS HAN INFLUIDO EN TU TRABAJO?

Para mí, un buen diseño de interiores comienza con una sólida comprensión de la arquitectura. Ya sea los nombres actuales o los pioneros que establecieron el diseño de interiores a nivel mundial, su trabajo es sin duda inspirador. Un buen diseño es algo que perdura en el tiempo, y hay muchos diseñadores menos conocidos que están haciendo un trabajo excelente. Con el fácil acceso a la información que tenemos hoy en día, estos principios de diseño se han afirmado.

Through design, the spontaneous and transparent expression when entering a space that exceeds all expectations. With art, recognizing a three-dimensional place that is expressed on a two-dimensional support, using a technique that defines my character, just like any other form of expression.

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH CHAVÓN: THE SCHOOL OF DESIGN? HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE?

I graduated from Llotja — Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny in Barcelona, but I consider Chavón my true alma mater, as it aligns perfectly with my values and beliefs. Having worked in managerial positions across four countries, I am excited to join this academic institution and help raise its profile. The academy has always allowed me to work with and for the profession, and I am confident that this experience will be no different. I am committed to giving my best and collaborating with my colleagues to achieve our goals.

WHAT IS THE MOST SATISFYING PART OF WHAT YOU DO IN YOUR ROLES AS A TEACHER AND AN ARTIST?

Investing time in students, sharing both positive and negative experiences, learning from them and inspiring them just as my own teachers inspired me. I aim to enlighten students about the vast global opportunities available and empower them to understand that, as 21st-century learners, they can actively mold their professional profiles to stand out in the competitive job market.

COULD

YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS OF ALTOS DE CHAVÓN?

Altos de Chavón is pure inspiration, and I am sure it is not only for me. The place has a unique energy and layout that captivates artists, and I plan to return as often as possible. Personally, I have been moved by the place, and it has had a significant impact on my professional work. I intend to continue creating paintings of Altos de Chavón for a long time because there is still so much left to showcase.

HAVE YOU ENJOYED YOUR TIME AT CASA DE CAMPO?

¿CON QUÉ MEDIOS TRABAJAS PRINCIPALMENTE?

Puedo sonar un poco bohemio, pero prefiero comenzar mis diseños con papel y lápiz. Luego, dependiendo de los requisitos del proyecto, lo complemento con herramientas digitales, materiales y otros elementos. Para mí, no hay mejor manera de comenzar el proceso de diseño que a través de la expresión a mano alzada.

¿PODRÍAS CONTARNOS SOBRE TU PROCESO CREATIVO?

El proceso creativo en el diseño de interiores a menudo se inicia por necesidades específicas establecidas por otros. Esto lleva a la formulación de una propuesta formal, que luego se desarrolla a través de diversas etapas, comenzando con un enfoque, seguido de desarrollo y planificación para la ejecución. En contraste, el proceso creativo en el arte está impulsado por la necesidad personal de expresarse artísticamente. Cuando se trata de mi propio trabajo artístico, me inspira la arquitectura y los paisajes. Mi objetivo es capturar y reflejar mi percepción del lugar sin perder su identidad única reconocible para cualquiera.

¿TIENE ALGUNA EXPERIENCIA MEMORABLE O MOMENTO SIGNIFICATIVO COMO ARTISTA Y/O DISEÑADOR?

A través del diseño, la expresión espontánea y transparente al entrar en un espacio que supera todas las expectativas. Con el arte, reconocer un lugar tridimensional que se expresa en un soporte bidimensional, usando una técnica que define mi carácter, al igual que cualquier otra forma de expresión.

¿PODRÍAS HABLARNOS SOBRE TU TRABAJO CON CHAVÓN: LA ESCUELA DE DISEÑO? ¿CÓMO HA SIDO TU EXPERIENCIA?

Me gradué de Llotja — Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny en Barcelona, pero considero a Chavón mi verdadera alma mater, ya que se alinea perfectamente con mis valores y creencias. Habiendo trabajado en puestos gerenciales en cuatro países, estoy emocionado de unirme a esta institución académica y ayudar a elevar su perfil. La academia siempre me ha permitido trabajar con y para la profesión, y estoy seguro de que esta experiencia no será diferente. Estoy comprometido a dar lo mejor de mí y colaborar con mis colegas.

Very much — we love it here. It feels like a little paradise for my family and me. Our 4-year-old son particularly enjoys the beach, but there are plenty of other things we love to do, too. We have made some great friends here, which is why we keep returning.

CAN YOU SHARE ANY FUTURE OR ONGOING PROJECTS YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Currently, I am finishing a Buddhist center in the city of Bogotá, Colombia.

My family. Discovering new places with my wife and son and hosting friends.

I want to continue growing so that, hopefully, I leave a legacy with a vision of places that immortalize and make other people happy and inspire them — filtering through my eyes the beauty of places by capturing their essence.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS STARTING OUT?

To have passion for their work and be persistent because “if you really want something, it will happen.” As in everything, attitude is the main thing; well-done work knows no bounds.

Invertir tiempo en los estudiantes, compartir experiencias, aprender de ellos e inspirarlos, como mis propios maestros me inspiraron a mí. Mi objetivo es iluminar a los estudiantes sobre las vastas oportunidades globales disponibles y empoderarlos para destacar en el mercado laboral competitivo.

¿PODRÍAS HABLAR SOBRE TU COLECCIÓN DE DIBUJOS DE ALTOS DE CHAVÓN?

Altos de Chavón es pura inspiración, y estoy seguro de que no solo para mí. El lugar tiene una energía y un diseño únicos que cautivan a los artistas, y planeo regresar tan seguido como sea posible. Personalmente, el lugar me ha conmovido y ha tenido un impacto significativo en mi trabajo profesional. Pretendo seguir creando pinturas de Altos de Chavón durante porque aún queda mucho por mostrar.

¿HAS DISFRUTADO TU TIEMPO EN CASA DE CAMPO?

Mucho, nos encanta estar aquí. Se siente como un pequeño paraíso para mi familia y para mí. A nuestro hijo de 4 años le gusta especialmente la playa, pero hay muchas otras cosas que nos encanta hacer también. Hemos hecho algunos grandes amigos aquí, por eso seguimos regresando.

¿EN EL QUE ESTÉS TRABAJANDO ACTUALMENTE?

Actualmente, estoy terminando un centro budista en la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia.

Mi familia. Descubrir nuevos lugares con mi esposa e hijo y ser anfitrión de nuestros amigos.

From an early age, Anna Redman Pablo showed an innate interest in art and fashion, a passion that has led her to become a prominent emerging designer in women’s clothing and jewelry. Her trajectory has been marked by the constant pursuit of originality and authenticity, values that are reflected in each of her creations.

A graduate of Altos de Chavón School of Design and Parsons School of Design at The New School, Redman Pablo forged her path through a unique combination of artistic and technical training in fashion design. Her years of study have provided her with not only the skills necessary to materialize her ideas but also a solid conceptual foundation on which to base her creative work.

In 2018, Redman Pablo launched her first brand, ODAISM, which explored the intersection between clothing and jewelry with a fresh and avant-garde vision. However, her desire to better understand the workings of the industry led her to work as a junior designer at the Jenny Polanco company for a year and a half. This period of practical experience allowed her to acquire invaluable knowledge about the intricacies of the fashion world, preparing her for the next chapter of her career.

Under this label, she has consolidated her distinctive style, characterized by ready-to-wear garments and women’s jewelry that combine elegance with a touch of carefree spirit. Her designs, mainly made of linen, chiffon and silk, reflect her philosophy of dressing in a sophisticated yet effortless manner.

“The inspiration for a collection can come from any theme,” she says. “I feel that what makes it special is how you make it your own and faithful to you as a person and designer. I can’t imagine releasing pieces with which I don’t feel identified myself. I always seek for my work to stand out from others and be recognizable for having my essence.”

One of the most outstanding features of Redman Pablo’s work is her ability to merge different artistic influences in her collections. In particular, her collaboration with the INDÓMITA project in a collection inspired by the works of Dominican painter Guillo Pérez was a testimony to her ability to reinterpret Dominican cultural elements with her own unique style. Cecilia Svoboda is a Venezuelan fashion designer whose talent and passion for fashion have led her to stand out in the emerging scene of the country. Through a unique combination of personal inspiration and technical skills, Svoboda is making her mark in the Dominican fashion industry, creating collections that embody elegance, sophistication and a bold attitude.

Svoboda’s journey into fashion began in her homeland of Venezuela, where she discovered her love of design at an early age. However, it was not until 2014 that she made a radical turn in her life by moving to the Dominican Republic to pursue her university studies in fashion design and the marketing and communication of fashion at Altos de Chavón School of Design. For two years, she had the privilege of residing in Casa de Campo, an experience that would profoundly influence her development as a designer.

“Fashion is part of me,” explains the designer. “It’s something I live in my day-to-day life. For me, dressing is creating an attitude and a personality.” This deep connection with fashion as a form of personal expression is reflected in each of her creations. Inspired by the personalities of different women and her own life experiences, Svoboda infuses her collections with a

unique and emotional narrative that resonates with her clients. One of the recurring questions among the brand’s followers is whether designs by Jenny Polanco herself are still being executed. Carolina Socias’ response is clear: “It’s all Jenny, now more than ever. We constantly turn to the brand’s archives for inspiration for the development of our collections. This rich history allows us to reinterpret and play with pieces that have defined Jenny Polanco’s style over the years.”

As for the brand’s future plans, Quiñones Polanco reveals that the team is focused on international expansion. “Currently, we have eight stores of our own between Santo Domingo, Casa de Campo, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic, but our goal is to take the Jenny Polanco brand to new markets,” she says. “Our online store allows us to serve customers worldwide, and we are working to remain competitive in other destinations and continue to expand.”

In addition to its commercial success, Jenny Polanco has also been a pillar of support for emerging talent through the Jenny Polanco Foundation. Since its foundation in 2021, the organization has developed programs for young designers and artisans, providing them with the necessary tools to enter and thrive in the fashion industry. “We are proud of the achievements so far,” says Quiñones Polanco. “Our goal is to continue promoting the development of national culture through fashion and the plastic arts.”

Esta rica historia nos permite reinterpretar y jugar con piezas que han definido el estilo de Jenny Polanco a lo largo de los años”.

En cuanto a los planes futuros de la marca, Quiñones Polanco reveló que están enfocados en la expansión internacional. “Actualmente tenemos ocho tiendas propias entre Santo Domingo, Casa de Campo, Punta Cana y Puerto Plata, en República Dominicana, pero nuestro objetivo es llevar la marca Jenny Polanco a nuevos mercados”, dijo. “Nuestra tienda en línea nos permite atender a clientes de todo el mundo, y estamos trabajando para mantenernos competitivos en otros destinos y seguir expandiéndonos”.

ON JAN. 19, 2024, Casa de Campo and the Tennis Center unveiled an exciting array of new facilities, marking a significant milestone in the venue’s sports offerings.

Among the most notable additions are four pickleball courts and a hard court tennis court. These expansions not only broaden the options for racket sports enthusiasts but also address the demands and suggestions of the players themselves.

Casa de Campo Tennis Center, renowned for its 11 soft clay courts, diversifies its offerings with the inclusion of a hard court. Matías Territoriale, the tennis director, explains that the difference in ball speed between these two surfaces implies variations in the technique and physical condition of the players. “We cannot say it is easier or harder, but rather different ways of playing the same sport,” Territoriale says.

The construction of the new hard court tennis court was driven by suggestions from players, mostly from the United States, who use the tennis center facilities to train while enjoying their vacations.

Territoriale emphasizes that many major tournaments are held on hard courts, and the new addition will allow players to train under conditions similar to those at such prestigious events. “For example, the US Open has the same surface as this one,” he says. “The idea is for players to prepare for their tournaments here at Casa de Campo.”

In addition to the hard court, Casa de Campo is also embracing the growing popularity of pickleball, a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, padel, badminton and table tennis. The sport, which is widespread in the United States, has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. According to the 2023 APP Pickleball Participation Report, 14% of adults, or 36.5 million people, played at least once in the last year.

PADEL COURTS

According to Territoriale, the two upcoming padel courts will bring the total number of available facilities for this sport to four at Casa de Campo. On Nov. 23, 2022, the first two padel courts were inaugurated at Casa de Campo, and since then, the reception has been positive.

Padel is a family sport that has captured the attention of many families in Casa de Campo. “The holiday season was full of families practicing on the padel courts,” Territoriale says.

The tennis director is eager to have the two new padel courts ready to host the first tournament of this modality at Casa de Campo. In addition to the new courts, two additional bathrooms are included for the convenience of the players, strategically located near the pickleball and padel facilities.

CAPTAIN PETE MANUEL has had a passion for fishing from a young age, thanks to the influence of his father. The North Carolina native fondly remembers the day in Virginia Beach when his father took him fishing and they caught a white marlin. He was 12 years old. That experience marked the beginning of a life dedicated to deep-sea sport fishing.

Since 1975, Manuel has been on the water, honing his skills as a fisherman. In 1979, he acquired his first boat and has since continued to obtain larger vessels. The Delta Dawn, his current boat, was built in North Carolina and has been his faithful companion since March 3, 2000.

Sport fishing is an activity that has continued to grow over the years, with the United States leading the way, according to data from the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s 2023 Special Report on Fishing. In 2022, 54.5 million Americans ages six and above went fishing, an increase of 4 percent over 2021 and just under 2020’s high of 54.7 million.

Manuel’s life revolves around fishing and his family. In 2018, they moved to Casa de Campo, where they spend most of their time fishing in nearby waters and participating in tournaments. His wife, Laurie Manuel, and their children are integral parts of his fishing team, and together, they have won numerous awards in local and international tournaments.

Like Manuel, hundreds of American anglers choose Casa de Campo as their favorite fishing destination, and for good reason. In 2017, Casa de Campo Marina ranked 6th among the top 10 billfish fishing spots in the world, according to Billfish Report.

A SPECIAL SPOT FOR SPORT FISHING

The fishing season in this area of the eastern Dominican Republic runs from February 1 to May 30.

HIGH-CONSUMPTION TOURISM

Sport fishing is a high-consumption form of tourism, which means it is a good source of foreign exchange and specialized employment within the sector in the Dominican Republic.

Although there is currently no official data in the country reporting income from sport fishing tourism, Nuñez estimates that a single fishing boat could spend between 75,000 and 100,000 dollars on expenses related to this activity in a month.

UN LUGAR ESPECIAL PARA LA PESCA DEPORTIVA

La temporada de pesca en esta zona del este de República Dominicana inicia desde el 1 de febrero hasta el 30 de mayo.

De acuerdo con Virma Nuñez, marketing manager de Casa de Campo Marina, los estadounidenses son amantes del pez marlín azul, y durante el periodo de la temporada de pesca en La Romana, este pez de pico es casi inexistente en las costas de los Estados Unidos.

El marlín azul es el pez más codiciado por los pescadores que llegan a Casa de Campo. “Es un pez excitante, es un pez que pelea mucho”, dice Virma.

Además del marlín azul, en las costas de La Romana se pueden apreciar una gran variedad de peces que incluye el pez vela, marlín blanco, pez espada, spearfish, el hatchet-marlin. Y otros como, dorados, atún, guatapanal (wahoo), etc.

Actualmente, Casa de Campo tiene la marina más competitiva para la pesca deportiva en República Dominicana, brindando una experiencia integral al pescador y sus acompañantes.

Es que Casa de campo es un destino familiar y de ahí radica su ventaja frente a otros lugares del país y del mundo. “Una lancha para pesca puede costar entre 7 a 8 millones de dólares. Traer una lancha de Estados Unidos a Casa de Campo puede costar hasta 50 mil dólares. Sin sumar el gasto de combustible, el alojamiento, restaurantes, etc. Generalmente estas lanchas se quedan mínimo un mes y hasta tres meses. Definitivamente, es un turismo de alto perfil”, asegura.

Durante la temporada de pesca en la marina de Casa de Campo se reciben un promedio de entre 35 y 40 embarcaciones. Allan Gonzalvo, Asistente Encargado de Temporada de Pesca de Casa de Campo Marina, indica que es una cantidad significativa en comparación con otros destinos de la región del Caribe.

Los pescadores que llegan al país aprovechan la oportunidad para establecer récords personales, al mismo tiempo, las autoridades de la marina realizan diversas actividades como torneos de pesca, eventos de socialización y hasta un popular y divertido partido amistoso de softball.

NAVIGATING AND TECHNIQUES

For a fisherman to catch fish in La Romana, they must venture up to 24 nautical miles offshore. Usually, a fisherman spends about eight hours at sea during a fishing day.

A typical fishing boat is composed of a captain, several sailors, and the fishermen themselves. A variety of equipment is used, including rods, reels of different weights, lines, hooks and lures. In addition, different fishing techniques are employed, such as bottom fishing, bottom trawling, deep-sea fishing, spinning and jigging, among others.

In Manuel’s case, he has perfected his technique over the years using Shimano reels and natural bait. The addition of sonar has been a game-changer for him, making it easier to locate fish and increasing his success on each outing.

For those who do not have their own boats but wish to explore the world of sport fishing, they have the option to rent boats. This service is also available at Casa de Campo. Rental boats typically come with an authorized fishing guide who knows the country’s waters perfectly and ensures a higher chance of catches. Additionally, they can provide services and the appropriate equipment for different types of fishing.

A SHARED PASSION

Manuel’s love of fishing is evident in his commitment to conservation and active participation in the fishing community. For him, fishing is more than just a sport; it’s a way to connect with nature and appreciate the “beauty of God’s divine creation.”

Each day on the water represents a new adventure for Manuel, full of excitement and learning. He is grateful for every moment he spends on his beloved sea. “It’s the excitement of knowing that when you leave the dock to fish, what will we see and learn today?” he concludes.

NAVEGACIÓN Y TÉCNICAS

Para un pescador lograr capturar peces en La Romana, debe adentrarse hasta 24 millas mar adentro. Usualmente, un pescador pasa unas 8 horas en el mar durante una jornada de pesca.

Una embarcación de pesca típica está compuesta por un capitán, varios marineros y los propios pescadores. Se utilizan diversos equipos, incluyendo cañas, carretes de diferentes pesos, líneas, anzuelos y señuelos. Además, se emplean diferentes técnicas de pesca, como la pesca de fondo, el curricán de fondo, la pesca de altura, el spinning, el jigging, entre otras.

En el caso de Manuel, éste ha perfeccionado su técnica a lo largo de los años utilizando carretes Shimano y cebos naturales. La incorporación del sonar ha supuesto una revolución para él, facilitando la localización de peces y aumentando su éxito en cada salida.

Para aquellos que no disponen de una embarcación propia, pero desean explorar el mundo de la pesca deportiva, tienen la

opción de alquilar embarcaciones. Este servicio también se ofrece en Casa de Campo. Las embarcaciones de alquiler suelen venir con un guía de pesca autorizado, quien conoce perfectamente las aguas del país y garantiza mayores probabilidades de capturas. Para él, la pesca va más allá de ser un simple deporte, es una manera de conectarse con la naturaleza y apreciar la “belleza de la creación divina de Dios”.

Cada día en el agua representa una nueva aventura para Manuel, llena de emoción y aprendizaje. Él está agradecido por cada momento que pasa en su amado mar. “Es la emoción de saber que cuando sales del muelle a pescar, ¿qué veremos y aprenderemos hoy?”, concluye.

Renowned Spanish painter Carlos Alvarez Las Heras is celebrated for his distinctive figurative style and emotionally evocative works. In an exclusive interview, Alvarez Las Heras shares insights into his creative process and the significance of his exhibition Bachata de Humo y Flores in Casa de Campo at WAO Gallery last year.

COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY? HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR ART ARISE?

Like any child, I loved drawing and painting. My mother, who is a great supporter of my career, noticed from day one that it was something special for me and encouraged it. Unlike other children, when everyone stopped drawing and painting to pursue other interests, I simply couldn’t stop. At a very young age, I participated in a children’s art contest with an oil painting that reproduced a scene from my home — a lead soldier with flags around him and a pistachio green background. I would say that soldier was my first “work,” or at least the first one I remember (a disaster, by the way).

ARE THERE SPECIFIC ARTISTS OR ART MOVEMENTS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR WORK?

I grew up admiring Benito Escarpizo, a renowned artist from my hometown, León, with whom I was fortunate to spend a lot of time in his studio watching him work. From him, I also learned that painting was not just for children; I could see myself reflected through him. I also spent my youth reproducing many comics by Francisco Ibáñez, a sadly recently deceased Spanish cartoonist. Much of his comic strips are reflected in my work.

I try to maintain that connection with my childhood self, recovering its freshness and naivety. I also have a special bond with Vela Zanetti. His foundation is in my city, León, and I have had the opportunity to exhibit my work there. As a teenager, I was captivated by all the art movements in early 20th-century Paris, adopting their “anything goes” message.

¿PODRÍAS DESCRIBIR TU TRAYECTORIA ARTÍSTICA? ¿CÓMO

SURGIÓ TU PASIÓN POR EL ARTE?

Como cualquier niño, me encantaba dibujar y pintar. Mi madre, gran partidaria de mi carrera, notó desde el primer día que era algo especial para mí y lo alentó. A diferencia de otros niños, cuando todos dejaron de dibujar y pintar para dedicarse a otros intereses, yo simplemente no podía parar. A una edad muy temprana, participé en un concurso de arte infantil con una pintura al óleo que reproducía una escena de mi hogar: un soldado de plomo con banderas a su alrededor y un fondo verde pistacho. Diría que ese soldado fue mi primera “obra”, o al menos la primera que recuerdo (un desastre, por cierto).

¿HAY ARTISTAS O MOVIMIENTOS ARTÍSTICOS ESPECÍFICOS

QUE HAYAN INFLUENCIADO TU TRABAJO?

Crecí admirando a Benito Escarpizo, un renombrado artista de mi ciudad natal, León, con quien tuve la suerte de pasar mucho tiempo en su estudio observándolo trabajar. De él, también aprendí que la pintura no era solo para niños; podía verme reflejado a través de él. También pasé mi juventud reproduciendo muchos cómics de Francisco Ibáñez, un tristemente recién fallecido dibujante español. Muchas de sus tiras cómicas se reflejan en mi trabajo.

Intento mantener esa conexión con mi yo infantil, recuperando su frescura y su ingenuidad. También tengo un vínculo especial con Vela Zanetti. Su fundación está en mi ciudad, León, y he tenido la oportunidad de exhibir mi trabajo allí. De adolescente, quedé cautivado por todos los movimientos artísticos del París de principios

I also want to mention two important artists for me, Kirchner and Goya. Great storytellers of their time, even though their styles and eras were completely different.

WHAT MEDIUMS DO YOU PRIMARILY WORK WITH, AND WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO THOSE SPECIFIC MEDIUMS?

I stopped using oil paint a long time ago because the drying times hindered some magical moments, and I didn’t like using drying agents that accelerated the process artificially. So, I almost exclusively use acrylic paint on canvas. Sometimes, I use board or cardboard as supports, but that’s rare. I also use a lot of markers, pastels and chalk, which help me with the finishing touches.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE AND THE THEMES OR SUBJECTS YOU FREQUENTLY EXPLORE?

I have always been a figurative painter. It’s a broad category to include myself in, but I wouldn’t know how to label my painting. Some articles label it as expressionist painting, of which I am a faithful follower, and also link it to naïve art, of which I am an admirer thanks to masters like the Dominican Justo Susana, a painter whose paintings I would fill my house with. His paintings have the power to teleport me to his country.

WHAT IS THE MOST SATISFYING PART OF WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR ART?

Without a doubt, the drawing. Sometimes premeditated, other times spontaneous, but I always celebrate when the canvas already has the sketch of what I want to develop. Painting is a maximum enjoyment. But it can also be mechanical at times. Most of the time, you know exactly what you’re looking for, and you anticipate the result in your head. Painting a blue jacket results in a blue jacket. The challenge is making that jacket when the canvas is blank. That’s where the challenge lies. Achieving it sometimes takes hours, erasures and a lot of frustration, but always, achieving something with effort is much more rewarding.

Dejé de usar pintura al óleo hace mucho tiempo porque los tiempos de secado dificultaban algunos momentos mágicos, y no me gustaba usar agentes de secado que aceleraran el proceso artificialmente. Por lo tanto, casi exclusivamente uso pintura acrílica sobre lienzo. A veces uso tabla o cartón como soportes, pero es raro. También uso muchos marcadores, pasteles y tizas, que me ayudan con los toques finales.

¿CÓMO DESCRIBIRÍAS TU ESTILO ARTÍSTICO Y LOS TEMAS O SUJETOS QUE EXPLORAS CON FRECUENCIA?

DO YOU HAVE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS YOU’VE EXPERIENCED AS AN ARTIST?

I fondly remember the mural I created at the bus station in my city, León, which was 24 meters long and three meters high. It was a tough job that took almost a year to complete, where I recreated a journey through the city’s main monuments, mixed with giant human figures playing among the buildings. That work, titled “Bienvenidos” (“Welcome”), was undoubtedly a milestone in my career, which also fills me with pride every time I remember it, approaching my city and my people.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE CRITICISM OR COMMENTS ABOUT YOUR ARTWORK? HOW DO YOU BALANCE EXTERNAL

Siempre he sido un pintor figurativo. Es una categoría amplia para incluirme, pero no sabría cómo etiquetar mi pintura. Algunos artículos la etiquetan como pintura expresionista, de la cual soy un fiel seguidor, y también la relacionan con el arte naif, del cual soy admirador gracias a maestros como el dominicano Justo Susana, un pintor cuyas obras llenaría mi casa. Sus pinturas tienen el poder de teleportarme a su país.

¿CUÁL ES LA PARTE MÁS SATISFACTORIA DE LO QUE HACES CON TU ARTE?

Sin duda, el dibujo. A veces premeditado, otras veces espontáneo, pero siempre celebro cuando el lienzo ya tiene el boceto de lo que quiero desarrollar. Pintar es un disfrute máximo. Pero también puede ser mecánico a veces. La mayoría de las veces, sabes exactamente lo que estás buscando, y anticipas el resultado en tu cabeza. OPINIONS WITH YOUR PERSONAL ARTISTIC VISION?

You have to avoid letting opinions dictate the path to follow, whether good or bad, as either can lead to dissatisfaction. There are many examples of careers ruined by a negative critique that later became tremendously successful. However, being true to oneself is still something very few achieve. But it is undoubtedly the only recipe to feel secure in what you do and allows for evolving with total freedom.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ROLE DOES ART PLAY IN SOCIETY?

HOW CAN IT IMPACT INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES?

Art has always been a powerful and diverse thought engine, anticipating significant social changes despite emerging in times of great skepticism. Art is not personified in decorative objects. It stirs deep consciences and feelings, so the artistic community has a great responsibility to guide and lead these changes.

Recuerdo con cariño el mural que creé en la estación de autobuses de mi ciudad, León, que tenía 24 metros de largo y 3 metros de alto. Fue un trabajo duro que tomó casi un año completar, donde recreé un viaje por los principales monumentos de la ciudad, mezclado con figuras humanas gigantes jugando entre los edificios. Esa obra, titulada “Bienvenidos”, fue sin duda un hito en mi carrera, que también me llena de orgullo cada vez que la recuerdo, acercándome a mi ciudad y a mi gente.

¿CÓMO MANEJAS LAS CRÍTICAS O COMENTARIOS SOBRE TU OBRA? ¿CÓMO EQUILIBRAS LAS OPINIONES EXTERNAS CON TU VISIÓN ARTÍSTICA PERSONAL?

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO EXHIBIT YOUR WORK AT CASA DE CAMPO? HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN SO FAR?

I have known Casa de Campo for years. My wife is Dominican and has a family home where we enjoy small stays every year. We planned an exhibition that was supposed to take place in 2020, but the pandemic changed everything. Finally, under the management of WAO Galería, we set the new exhibition dates for 2023. I have had the opportunity to meet very interesting people, and I am very grateful to the WAO team for the facilities they have given me to exhibit my work in their gallery in Altos de Chavón.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION BACHATA DE HUMO Y FLORES?

Bachata de Humo y Flores is a play on words to pay homage to the country’s rhythms and its multiple contrasts, the latter identified as night and day under the title of smoke and flowers. The pure light that achieves colors that I only find here and the frenetic night where

Hay que evitar que las opiniones dicten el camino a seguir, ya sean buenas o malas, ya que ambas pueden llevar a la insatisfacción. Hay muchos ejemplos de carreras arruinadas por una crítica negativa que luego se convirtieron en tremendamente exitosas. Sin embargo, ser fiel a uno mismo sigue siendo algo que muy pocos logran. Pero sin duda es la única receta para sentirse seguro en lo que haces y permite evolucionar con total libertad.

EN TU OPINIÓN, ¿QUÉ PAPEL JUEGA EL ARTE EN LA SOCIEDAD?

¿CÓMO PUEDE IMPACTAR A INDIVIDUOS Y COMUNIDADES?

El arte siempre ha sido un poderoso y diverso motor de pensamiento, anticipando cambios sociales significativos a pesar de surgir en tiempos de gran escepticismo. El arte no se personifica en objetos decorativos. Remueve conciencias y sentimientos profundos, por lo que la comunidad artística tiene una gran responsabilidad de guiar y liderar estos cambios.

¿PODRÍAS CONTARNOS SOBRE TU CAMINO PARA EXHIBIR TU

OBRA EN CASA DE CAMPO? ¿CÓMO HA SIDO TU EXPERIENCIA?

anything can happen are the basis from which I developed the exhibition. Some of the works were executed directly in the Dominican Republic, and others in my studio in Madrid, although my heart was anchored in this wonderful country.

DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A FAVORITE PIECE? WHAT DISTINGUISHES IT AND MAKES IT UNIQUE?

I always say that my favorite piece is the last one I painted because it is undoubtedly the most current and, therefore, benefits from all my experience up to that moment. Specifically, it is a portrait of a young Danish woman whose father has commissioned a portrait of each of the six members of their family. Portraits are an essential part of my production, very rewarding, as it allows me to connect with the subject in a personal way, creating a bond that I try to capture in the final result of the work.

HAVE YOU ENJOYED YOUR TIME AT CASA DE CAMPO? WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED DOING WITH YOUR FAMILY?

Casa de Campo is an exceptional place of great beauty. It is also, from my point of view, a very well-prepared place to enjoy with family. We love going to the beach in the morning, returning home for a meal, and strolling through the marina or having ice cream with my children. We visited La Catalina and Palmilla, and I also took the opportunity to go to the cinema and see the premieres of Barbie, Elemental and Oppenheimer.

OUTSIDE THE ART WORLD, WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS?

Conozco Casa de Campo desde hace años. Mi esposa es dominicana y tiene una casa familiar donde disfrutamos de pequeñas estancias cada año. Planeamos una exposición que supuestamente tendría lugar en 2020, pero la pandemia lo cambió todo. Finalmente, bajo la dirección de la Galería WAO, establecimos las nuevas fechas de la exposición para 2023. He tenido la oportunidad de conocer a personas muy interesantes, y estoy muy agradecido al equipo de WAO por las facilidades que me han dado para exhibir mi trabajo en su galería en Altos de Chavón.

¿NOS PODRÍAS HABLAR SOBRE TU COLECCIÓN “BACHATA DE HUMO Y FLORES”?

“Bachata de Humo y Flores” es un juego de palabras para rendir homenaje a los ritmos del país y sus múltiples contrastes, estos últimos identificados como noche y día bajo el título de humo y flores. La luz pura que logra colores que solo encuentro aquí y la frenética noche donde puede pasar cualquier cosa son la base desde la que desarrollé la exposición. Algunas de las obras fueron ejecutadas directamente en la República Dominicana y otras en mi estudio en Madrid, aunque mi corazón estaba anclado en este maravilloso país.

I really like music. Whenever I paint, I am listening to music; I would almost say I like it as much as painting. And I love spending time with my children. They are still very young, and I always try to absorb some of their freshness. They have no filters.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE ASPIRATIONS AS AN ARTIST?

I have a relatively low profile in terms of ambitions. I want to continue learning and let life take me a bit. Getting more involved with new artists and meeting people who understand my language is very gratifying. I guess wishing that this continues to happen is more than enough for me. Oh, and also celebrating a retrospective when I turn 50. Gathering pieces scattered around the world and meeting those who live with them would be very emotional for me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ARTISTS WHO ARE STARTING THEIR ARTISTIC JOURNEY?

After finishing a piece, you have to put a new blank canvas and start from scratch. It can be really frustrating. Therefore, although inspiration and happy ideas are very romantic and idealized concepts, putting in a good handful of hours every day and being organized always gives good results. And as I said before, being true to yourself never fails.

¿TIENES ACTUALMENTE UNA PIEZA FAVORITA? ¿QUÉ

LA DISTINGUE Y LA HACE ÚNICA?

Siempre digo que mi pieza favorita es la última que pinté porque sin duda es la más actual y, por lo tanto, se beneficia de toda mi experiencia hasta ese momento. Específicamente, es un retrato de una joven danesa cuyo padre ha encargado un retrato de cada uno de los seis miembros de su familia. Los retratos son una parte esencial de mi producción, muy gratificantes, ya que me permite conectar con el sujeto de manera personal, creando un vínculo que intento capturar en el resultado final del trabajo.

¿HAS DISFRUTADO TU TIEMPO EN CASA DE CAMPO? ¿QUÉ HAS DISFRUTADO HACER CON TU FAMILIA?

Casa de Campo es un lugar excepcional de gran belleza. También es, desde mi punto de vista, un lugar muy bien preparado para disfrutar en familia. Nos encanta ir a la playa por la mañana, regresar a casa para comer y pasear por la Marina o tomar helado con mis hijos. Visitamos La Catalina y Palmilla, y también aproveché para ir al cine y ver los estrenos de Barbie, Elemental y Oppenheimer.

FUERA DEL MUNDO DEL ARTE, ¿CUÁLES SON TUS PASIONES?

Me gusta mucho la música. Siempre que pinto, estoy escuchando música; casi diría que me gusta tanto como pintar. Y me encanta pasar tiempo con mis hijos. Todavía son muy pequeños, y siempre intento absorber algo de su frescura. No tienen filtros.

¿CUÁLES SON TUS ASPIRACIONES FUTURAS COMO ARTISTA?

Tengo un perfil relativamente bajo en términos de ambiciones. Quiero seguir aprendiendo y dejar que la vida me lleve un poco. Involucrarme más con nuevos artistas y conocer personas que comprendan mi lenguaje es muy gratificante. Supongo que desear que esto continúe sucediendo es más que suficiente para mí. Oh, y también celebrar una retrospectiva cuando cumpla 50 años. Reunir piezas dispersas por todo el mundo y encontrarme con quienes viven con ellas sería muy emocionante para mí.

¿QUÉ CONSEJO LE DARÍAS A LOS ARTISTAS QUE ESTÁN COMENZANDO SU TRAYECTORIA ARTÍSTICA?

Después de terminar una obra, hay que poner un lienzo en blanco nuevo y empezar desde cero. Puede ser realmente frustrante. Por lo tanto, aunque la inspiración y las ideas felices son conceptos muy románticos e idealizados, poner un buen puñado de horas cada día y ser organizado siempre da buenos resultados. Y como dije antes, ser fiel a uno mismo nunca falla.

2024 SUMMER GOLF MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

Summer in Casa usually means that it’s time for golf course maintenance. Golf course closure and maintenance are essential for keeping our courses up to par and in tip-top shape, but just because they can’t be played on doesn’t mean they can’t still be enjoyed! The courses make for beautiful walks, especially along with Teeth of the Dog’s oceanside holes at sunset! The closures will rotate, ensuring one will always be open for a tee time while the others are out of commission. Refer back to our website for the schedule.
