¡Bienvenido

It’s both hard to believe and exciting to acknowledge that 2020 is quickly becoming a memory. Good riddance 2020 and welcome 2021—may you be the year we’ve been longing for. Still, in many ways, it’s been an unconventionally incredible year. I feel closer to my family and my work family—even though I’ve not physically seen many of them for far too long. At work, like so many, we’ve buckled down and gotten to reinvent ourselves as professionals, as colleagues, and as a business. I’ve gotten to spend copious amounts of time with my wife and little ones, which has been an incredible silver lining to all of this. Casa de Campo Resort and Costasur have also taken an impossible situation and done so much to secure the safety and comfort of all the residents and guests who live and love Casa de Campo. Reopening after its first-ever closure, Casa de Campo has done what so many successful businesses have had to do: adapt and grow, carefully finding a balance of service and luxury, while implementing comprehensive protocols to keep everyone safe. Their ongoing commitment to the health, safety, and engagement of our community is greatly appreciated. I, for one, am also grateful for all the challenges experienced and the lessons learned. While it could feel selfish to celebrate and be grateful when so many people and businesses are struggling and going through their most challenging days, it’s important to take a moment and be genuinely grateful for what we have, who we have around us, and the knowledge that better days are coming for all of us. We need to celebrate the wins as we get them. Looking forward to a new world in 2021 filled with boundless opportunity, good health, and happiness for all.

Es difícil de creer y emocionante reconocer que 2020 se está convirtiendo rápidamente en un recuerdo. Adiós 2020 y bienvenido 2021: que seas el año que anhelamos. Aún así, de muchas maneras ha sido un año increíblemente poco convencional. Me siento más cerca de mi familia y mi familia laboral, aunque no he visto físicamente a muchos de ellos durante mucho tiempo. En el trabajo, como tantos, nos hemos abrochado el cinturón y hemos conseguido reinventarnos como profesionales, como compañeros y como empresa. He podido pasar una gran cantidad de tiempo con mi esposa y mis pequeños, lo que ha sido un rayo de luz increíble para todo esto. Casa de Campo Resort y Costasur también han tomado una situación imposible y han hecho mucho para garantizar la seguridad y comodidad de todos los residentes e invitados que viven y aman Casa de Campo. High above the first hole of the private La Romana Country Club golf course, sits a spectacular newly renovated villa. The oversized terrace includes an outside kitchen with a BBQ area making this one of the villa’s main attractions, built for great gatherings and dinner parties. To complement the exterior is an infinite-edge style pool and jacuzzi amid the natural scenery that surrounds the property, perfect for hot days on our tropical island. The property has four bedrooms each with ensuite baths rooms, ready to be occupied and personalized by its new owners. The master suite opens up to the main terrace, whilst the second master has a terrace with a view of the green; guests will have no problem rising early and making their way to the backyard with a book in hand to enjoy the breezy morning hours.

ANA GARCÍA-SOTOCA PASCUAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE LA ROMANA - BAYAHIBE TOURISM CLUSTER “WE ARE READY TO WELCOME YOU ALL” Ana García-Sotoca Pascual was born and raised in Mallorca, Spain. She grew up among hotels, tourists and businessmen in the tourism industry. Since very young she was interested in travelling and seeing the world, which led her to choose a career in tourism. Three years later she moved to the Dominican Republic after being offered a job here. In 2010, while living in Bayahibe, she applied for the position of Executive Director of the La Romana - Bayahibe Tourism Cluster and has been working there ever since. The Tourism Cluster is a non-profit organization that seeks to bring together companies and institutions that are related to tourism directly or indirectly to achieve sustainable tourism development. “We work together to continue promoting our destination in a way that will benefit not only the members but also our community. When you come to La Romana or Bayahibe you immediately realize that it is unique. Not only can you enjoy the various hotels but also all that the town has to offer. The preservation of our natural resources, our culture, the community involvement in tourism development, is very important to us,” Ana explains. “We want tourists to come and fall in love with the destination and then come back because they enjoyed everything we have to offer.” Ana García-Sotoca Pascual nació y se crió en Mallorca, España. Creció entre hoteles, turistas y empresarios de la industria turística. Desde muy pequeña le interesó viajar y conocer mundo, lo que la llevó a optar por la carrera de turismo. Tres años después se mudó a República Dominicana luego de que le ofrecieran un trabajo aquí. En 2010, mientras vivía en Bayahibe, aplicó para el puesto de directora ejecutiva del Clúster de Turismo La Romana - Bayahibe y ha estado trabajando allí desde entonces. El Clúster de Turismo es una organización sin fines de lucro que busca aglutinar empresas e instituciones que se relacionan directa o indirectamente con la industria para lograr un desarrollo turístico sostenible. “Trabajamos juntos para seguir promocionando nuestro destino de una manera que beneficie no solo a los miembros sino también a nuestra comunidad. Cuando vienes a La Romana o Bayahibe, inmediatamente te das cuenta de que es único. No solo podrá disfrutar de los distintos hoteles, sino también de todo lo que la ciudad tiene para ofrecer. La preservación de nuestros recursos naturales, nuestra cultura, la participación de la comunidad en el desarrollo del turismo, es muy importante para nosotros”, explica Ana. “Queremos que los turistas vengan y se enamoren del destino y luego regresen porque disfrutaron de todo lo que tenemos para ofrecer”.

The La Romana Bayahibe destination stands out from the rest thanks to the work the Cluster has done throughout the years. Pre-Covid the tourist destination had the highest occupancy rate but most importantly the repetition rate was also high; the La Romana Bayahibe had the most repeat tourists compared to other destinations in the country. The tourists that visit also benefit from the many complimentary attractions that we have to offer such as the Saona and Catalina islands, Altos de Chavón, and the various worldrenowned golf courses. “We have noticed that tourists want to see and do more than just stay in a hotel, so throughout the years we have been preparing and adapting to be able to offer them what they need and want. We still have things to improve but this is proof that our strategy of developing more sustainable tourism is not misguided,” says Ana. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the travel and tourism industry have been amongst the most affected sectors due to global travel restrictions including many borders fully closed, as a way to contain the virus. When the Dominican Republic was affected by the pandemic, all businesses and organizations were struck with uncertainty; it was something new for everyone. We have had to adapt, modify, and relearn. “I think the hardest moment was when we saw that many businesses and hotels had to close. As a Cluster, we decided to focus on health and safety. We worked together with the Cestur, the National Police, and the Ministry of Public Health to prevent the virus from spreading in the tourist area, making sure that the population followed all protocols,” says Ana. When asked how they plan to continue promoting the La Romana Bayahibe destination amidst the world pandemic she states: “Being able to use social networks and our website to make ourselves known will help us a lot. Sadly our destination, despite being so beautiful, is not very known internationally. Along with sharing the various protocols put forward, we have focused on giving positive news on social media by sharing beautiful imagery of our destination so that people can at least escape for a few minutes from what’s going on around us and see all that we have to offer. It is also a way of motivating them to come to visit us as soon as all this is over or a vaccine is developed. The fact that we are a small destination, with small hotels that have around 500 to 700 rooms, means that tourists will feel more confident when deciding on a place to visit on vacation because they will not be around many people. All the hotels are following the health and safety protocols established by the government and all the international standards as well to ensure their guests’ wellbeing.” After reopening the hotels and airports the La Romana Bayahibe destination has welcomed numerous tourists, the majority Europeans who had returned to their countries of origin at the beginning of the pandemic but who work and live in the United States. Since they can’t travel directly to the States, they come here first, quarantine for 15 days, and then travel to the States; this has helped the country in terms of tourism.

El destino La Romana Bayahibe se destaca del resto gracias al trabajo que el Clúster ha realizado a lo largo de los años. Pre-Covid, el destino turístico tenía la tasa de ocupación más alta, pero lo más importante es que la tasa de repetición también fue alta; La Romana Bayahibe tuvo la mayor cantidad de turistas que repiten en comparación con otros destinos del país. Los turistas que nos visitan también se benefician de las numerosas atracciones complementarias que tenemos para ofrecer, como las islas Saona y Catalina, Altos de Chavón y los diversos campos de golf de renombre mundial. “Hemos notado que los turistas quieren ver y hacer más que quedarse en un hotel, por eso a lo largo de los años nos hemos ido preparando y adaptándonos para poder ofrecerles lo que necesitan y quieren. Todavía tenemos cosas por mejorar, pero lo anterior es una indicación de que nuestra estrategia de desarrollar un turismo más sostenible no está desencaminada”, dice Ana. Con la pandemia de Covid-19, la industria de los viajes y el turismo ha estado entre los sectores más afectados debido a las restricciones de viaje globales, incluidas muchas fronteras completamente cerradas, como una forma de contener el virus. Cuando la República Dominicana se vio afectada por la pandemia, todas las empresas y organizaciones se vieron afectadas por la incertidumbre; era algo nuevo para todos. Hemos tenido que adaptarnos, modificar y reaprender. “Creo que el momento más difícil fue cuando vimos que muchas empresas y hoteles tenían que cerrar. Como Clúster, decidimos centrarnos en la salud y la seguridad. Trabajamos en conjunto con el Cestur, la Policía Nacional y el Ministerio de Salud Pública para evitar la propagación del virus en la zona turística, asegurándonos de que la población siguiera todos los protocolos ”, dice Ana. Cuando se le preguntó cómo piensan seguir promocionando el destino La Romana Bayahibe en medio de la pandemia mundial, afirma: “Poder usar las redes sociales y nuestro sitio web para darnos a conocer nos ayudará mucho. Lamentablemente nuestro destino, a pesar de ser tan hermoso, no es muy conocido internacionalmente. Además de compartir los distintos protocolos propuestos, nos hemos centrado en dar noticias positivas en las redes sociales compartiendo bellas imágenes de nuestro destino para que la gente pueda al menos escapar por unos minutos de lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor y ver todo lo que tenemos que ofrecer. También es una forma de motivarlos a que vengan a visitarnos en cuanto todo esto termine o se desarrolle una vacuna. El hecho de que seamos un destino pequeño, con pequeños hoteles que tienen alrededor de 500 a 700 habitaciones, hace que el turista se sienta más seguro a la hora de decidirse por un lugar para salir de vacaciones porque no estará rodeado de mucha gente. Todos los hoteles están siguiendo los protocolos de salud y seguridad establecidos por el gobierno y todos los estándares internacionales para garantizar el bienestar de sus huéspedes ”. Tras la reapertura de hoteles y aeropuertos el destino La Romana Bayahibe ha recibido a numerosos turistas, la mayoría europeos que habían regresado a sus países de origen al principio de la pandemia pero que trabajan y viven en los Estados Unidos. Como no pueden viajar directamente, primero vienen aquí, se ponen en cuarentena durante 15 días y luego viajan a los Estados Unidos; esto ha ayudado al país en términos de turismo.

Next year will be challenging but Ana is hopeful that the recovery will be a speedy one. “In the Dominican Republic, we are living a relatively normal life but this is not what is happening in the United States and Europe. People who have spent months in their apartment without being able to leave are going to want to go on vacation and this will help us. People want to travel, but most are wary about it. This is why we will continue to share the various protocols that the hotels have implemented so they feel confident and come to visit us. Our destination might be small but it’s extraordinary with lots to offer; we are ready to welcome you all."

1 ½ oz. of vodka Orange juice

1 ½ oz. of vodka 1/2 oz. Kahlua ½ oz. Evaporated milk

PREPARATION Pour the vodka into a highball glass with ice and then add the orange juice and garnish with a slice of Orange

PREPARATION Pour the vodka and Kahlua into a whiskey glass or short glass with ice, then add the evaporated milk and stir.

PREPARATION

Pour the first two ingredients into a highball glass with ice and then add the grenadine around the edge of the glass.

Mix all the ingredients in a shaker with ice, place in cocktail glasses, and garnish with cinnamon powder and lemon zest.

Consecrated in 1979, St. Stanislaus Church is named after the patron saint of Poland in tribute to Pope John Paul II who presented the church with the ashes of St. Stanislaus for its inauguration. A popular choice for destination weddings, it was here that famous actress Celinés Toribio wed in 2009, with fellow actress Michelle Rodríguez as her bridesmaid. According to rumors, the late Michael Jackson also married here, but although the couple did stay in Casa in 1994, this is not where he married Lisa Marie Presley.

Opened in 2001, the Marina Casa de Campo marked a turning point in the development of both yachting and fishing activities in the eastern region of the country. The project was so successful that just a year later, an expansion of the Marina was approved and the wave breaker was cut and a second stage was constructed taking the project from 183 moorings to a total of 350 docks and capable of receiving ships from 30 to 250 feet in length.

This prestigious project is a dream come true, conceived by Italian architect Gianfranco Fini on his first visit to Casa de Campo after receiving an invitation from his friend Pierro Giacosa in 1989. Fini fell in love with the country and resort and presented his vision to Alfonso “Alfy” Fanjul, President of the Board of Directors Central Romana Corporation, in a fortuitous meeting aboard a river cruise boat up the Chavón River.

he Dominican Republic has plenty of interesting and unique traditions, that might be normal for us, but could seem unusual for visitors and residents from other countries. In this edition, we’ll be helping you get to know a little about our culture and traditions.

La República Dominicana tiene muchas tradiciones interesantes y únicas, que pueden ser normales para nosotros, pero que pueden parecer inusuales para los visitantes y residentes de otros países. En esta edición te ayudaremos a conocer un poco nuestra cultura y tradiciones.

La Vieja Belén La Vieja Belén is a legendary figure that only exists in the Dominican Republic. It is said she comes a week after the Three Kings ( January 6, Epiphany), bringing a simple gift to only poor children. La Vieja Belén es una figura legendaria que solo existe en República Dominicana. Se dice que llega una semana después de los Reyes Magos (6 de enero, Epifanía), trayendo un simple regalo solo a los niños pobres.

Carnaval The Dominican Carnival is without a doubt the most colorful of all celebrations that take place throughout the year. It starts in February, which is also the month that the Dominican Republic celebrates its Independence Day – on February 27th. El carnaval dominicano es sin duda la más colorida de todas las celebraciones que se realizan durante todo el año. Comienza en febrero, que es también el mes en que República Dominicana celebra su Día de la Independencia el 27 de febrero.

Virgen de la Altagracia Day The day of the Virgen de Altagracia is celebrated annually on January 21st, and each year thousands of faithful devotees of the Virgin travel from across the Dominican Republic to the cathedral in Higuey (Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia de Higüey), to worship, to pray, give thanks and ask for health or protection. El día de la Virgen de Altagracia se celebra anualmente el 21 de enero, y cada año miles de fieles devotos de la Virgen viajan desde toda la República Dominicana hasta la catedral de Higüey (Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia de Higüey), para adorar, rezar, dar gracias y pedir salud o protección.

Angelitos

A special tradition that can be done at any time of the year, but is most common during the festive season is the "Angelitos". In some countries, it’s a simple “exchange”, but for Dominicans, it’s a very fun and traditional activity that is always done amongst siblings, but also with friends and co-workers, a way to share presents in a party celebration. Una tradición especial que se puede hacer en cualquier época del año, pero que es más común durante la época festiva son los “Angelitos”. En algunos países es un simple “intercambio”, pero para los dominicanos es una actividad muy divertida y tradicional que siempre se hace entre hermanos, pero también con amigos y compañeros de trabajo, es una forma de compartir regalos en la celebración de una fiesta.

May Showers Traditionally, country people and more so older people have talked about drinking the water from the first rain in May for good luck. Tradicionalmente, la gente del campo y más las personas mayores han hablado de beber el agua de la primera lluvia de mayo para tener buena suerte.

Habichuelas con Dulce During Lent and Semana Santa (Holy Week), like in many other countries, the Dominican Republic commemorates Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection – but it is also a time when Dominicans love spending quality time with their families preparing an original and exquisite dessert and longtime Dominican tradition called “Habichuelas con dulce” (Sweet Beans)! Durante la Cuaresma y Semana Santa, como en muchos otros países, la República Dominicana conmemora el sufrimiento, la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús, pero también es un tiempo en que a los dominicanos les encanta pasar tiempo de calidad con sus familias preparando un postre original y exquisito y una tradición dominicana de larga data llamada “Habichuelas con dulce”.

La Bandera One of the most popular dishes in the Dominican Republic is lovingly referred to as ‘la Bandera Dominicana’ or ‘the Dominican Flag’. It is made up of traditional bean stew (habichuelas guisadas), white rice, meat (usually stewed chicken, beef, pork, or goat), fried plantains, and a simple salad of iceberg lettuce. Uno de los platos más populares en la República Dominicana se conoce cariñosamente como 'la Bandera Dominicana' o 'la Bandera Dominicana'. Se compone de habichuelas guisadas, arroz blanco, carne (generalmente pollo, ternera, ó cerdo guisado), plátanos fritos y una simple ensalada de lechuga iceberg.

Perico Ripiao The “perico ripiao” is one of the many versions of the Dominican merengue. It is the oldest type and it’s originally from the Cibao (northern part of the country) and consists of a group of three or four musicians with an accordion, a tambora, and a güira who perform a very catchy and rhythmic merengue. El perico ripiao es una de las muchas versiones del merengue dominicano. Es el tipo más antiguo y es originario del Cibao (parte norte del país) y está formado por un grupo de tres o cuatro músicos con acordeón, tambora y güira que interpretan un merengue muy pegadizo y rítmico.

Charamicos

Charamicos are an integral part of the Dominican Christmas season. A craft that came into being with the desire to decorate even in the most rural areas of the country. It all began in the 1970s. The “De Jesus family”, from Puerto Plata, began by creating the figures of the nativity scene using dried branches of wood. In time their work became so popular they started to elaborate Christmas trees, stars, baskets, angels, donkeys, and more. Initially painted in traditional holiday colors, red and green, soon after they could be seen in a variety of colors including grey, purple, and even orange. Es una característica muy propia de la época navideña en la República Dominicana. Es una tradición que nació fruto de la necesidad de adorno en las zonas rurales del país. Todo comenzó en la década de 1970. La familia De Jesús, oriunda de Puerto Plata, inició haciendo figuras que asemejan a los personajes del nacimiento y la sagrada familia, y a medida que sus obras artesanales calaron en el gusto de la población, entonces evolucionaron a los árboles de navidad, cestas, canastas, estrellas, bolas, ángeles y burritos, todos estos con colores no tradicionales, ya que en sus inicios los colores usados eran el rojo y el verde, ahora se han incluido el gris, morado y naranja. 86 CASA DE CAMPO LIVING

Christmas Eve Dinner

The Christmas Eve dinner or “la cena del 24” is probably the favorite and most special day in the month of December for all Dominicans. Why? Because you don’t only get to spend time with your loved ones, but the best part of all… the FOOD! Families go to mass in the afternoon, and at night a great banquet. La Nochebuena o “la cena del 24” es probablemente el día favorito y más especial del mes de diciembre para todos los dominicanos. ¿Por qué? Porque no solo puedes pasar tiempo con tus seres queridos, sino la mejor parte de todo ... ¡la COMIDA! Las familias van a misa por la tarde y por la noche a un gran banquete.

Aguinaldos

An “Aguinaldo” is a casual group of people, family or friends who merrily go from house to house, singing and knocking on doors to wake people up and invite them to join this musical celebration. For all Dominicans this is a tradition that has joyfully been adopted over the years… being woken up to this jolly holiday tradition, everyone happily joins the party to sing along with the “perico ripiao.” Un “Aguinaldo” es un grupo informal de personas, familiares o amigos que van alegremente de casa en casa, cantando y tocando puertas para despertar a la gente e invitarlos a unirse a esta celebración musical. Para todos los dominicanos, esta es una tradición que ha sido adoptada con alegría a lo largo de los años ... al despertar a esta alegre tradición navideña, todos se unen felizmente a la fiesta para cantar junto con el "perico ripiao".

New Years

This very special day is celebrated all around the world, but obviously each country has its own culture and traditions, so how do Dominicans celebrate New Year’s Eve? Buying new clothes for New Year’s eve, cleaning the house, painting, clearing the closets are just a few things they do to start the new year with good vibes and leave bad energy behind. Families also gather for dinner and to watch the fireworks that herald the start of the new year. Este día tan especial se celebra en todo el mundo, pero obviamente cada país tiene su propia cultura y tradiciones, entonces, ¿cómo celebran los dominicanos la víspera de Año Nuevo? Comprar ropa nueva para la víspera de año nuevo, limpiar la casa, pintar, limpiar los armarios son solo algunas de las cosas que hacen para comenzar el nuevo año con buena suerte y dejar atrás la mala energía. Las familias también se reúnen para cenar y ver los fuegos artificiales que anuncian el comienzo del nuevo año.
