Benefiting Fundación MIR, the 32nd Annual Magical Splendor Gala was hosted by Raysa and Alfy Fanjul at Casa Grande. The event was filled with whimsical touches, including candlelit pathways and guests dressed in elegant cocktail attire. Renata Soñé led the proceedings, which included presentations by Fundación MIR students, golf tournament prizes and a showcase of Naeem Khan’s Resort and Spring/Summer 2023 collections. Several dresses donated by Khan were auctioned off, raising additional funds for the MIR schools. The night ended with guests dancing and celebrating the successful gala.

En Casa Grande, Raysa y Alfy Fanjul fueron los anfitriones de la 32ª Gala Anual Esplendor Mágico a beneficio de la Fundación MIR. El evento estuvo repleto de toques extravagantes, incluidos caminos iluminados con velas e invitados vestidos con elegantes atuendos de cóctel. TEEING OFF FOR FUNDACIÓN MIR

The Fundación MIR hosted the 32nd annual Magical Splendor Golf Tournament at the Casa de Campo Country Club. After a string of rainy days, golfers were greeted by blue skies for a successful event. Each year, Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, her daughter Lyanne Azqueta and the whole Fundación MIR team do an incredible job putting together this tournament and raising money to support the education of hundreds of children at the Fundación MIR schools in La Romana. The tournament perfectly combines golf and community spirit for a good cause.

La Fundación MIR organizó el 32° Torneo Anual de Golf Magical Splendor en el Country Club de Casa de Campo. Después de una serie de días lluviosos, los golfistas fueron recibidos por cielos azules para un evento exitoso. Cada año, Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, su hija Lyanne Azqueta y todo el equipo de la Fundación MIR hace un trabajo increíble organizando este torneo y recaudando dinero para apoyar la educación de cientos de niños de las escuelas de la Fundación MIR en La Romana. POP-UP EXHIBITION OF LEGENDARY ARTIST AL HIRSCHFELD

David Leonard, curator and representative of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation, presented the work and career of 20th-century American illustrator Al Hirschfeld at the WAO Chavón Innovation Hub. The foundation was invited to Casa de Campo as part of the Artists in Casa initiative, showcasing diverse artists for the community in collaboration with the Patronato Benéfico Oriental. Guests enjoyed live music and Hirschfeld’s impressive drawings of recognized artists and Broadway shows.

RETRO JAZZ CONCERT

The Casa de Campo community celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Altos de Chavón Amphitheater with a concert by the Dominican group Retro Jazz. Led by Pengbian Sang, the band mixed popular hits with a unique twist, starting with “Ojalá Que Llueva Café,” an iconic merengue song by Juan Luis Guerra. The performance elicited continuous applause from the audience, making it a night to remember. The concert was a fitting tribute to the amphitheater’s 40 years of music history.

La comunidad de Casa de Campo celebró el 40 aniversario del Anfiteatro Altos de Chavón con un concierto del grupo dominicano Retro Jazz. Dirigida por Pengbian Sang, la banda mezcló éxitos populares con un toque único, comenzando con “Ojalá Que Llueva Café”, una icónica canción de merengue de Juan Luis Guerra. El espectáculo provocó continuos aplausos de la audiencia, completando una noche para recordar. El concierto fue un tributo apropiado a los 40 años de historia musical del anfiteatro.

Fernando Tamburini’s works filled the main room of WAO Gallery with magic. The mature pieces, with their sublime production and captivating colors, enchanted the enthusiastic crowd in attendance. Fourteen works were on display, showcasing the use of various materials and the departure from Tamburini’s original style. The attendees were thoroughly delighted by Tamburini’s imaginative themes, making the event unforgettable. The revenue generated from various projects and activities at WAO Chavón is directed toward social programs to empower communities in vulnerable conditions. These initiatives align with the organization’s mission and promote values that support community empowerment.

Las obras de Fernando Tamburini llenaron de magia la sala principal de WAO Galería. Las piezas maduras, con su sublime producción y colores cautivadores, encantaron a la entusiasta multitud que concurrió. Se exhibieron catorce obras, mostrando el uso de varios materiales y la desviación del estilo original de Tamburini. HOGAR DEL NIÑO WEEKEND SILVER EDITION

The 26th annual Hogar del Niño Weekend - The Silver Edition - was held on February 18, 2023. The event aimed to raise awareness and aid for the Patronato Benéficio Oriental’s organization and schools through fundraising activities. Attendees enjoyed traditional golf and tennis tournaments, yoga, the first-ever padel and pickleball tournament, and a sip and paint event. The day culminated in a beautiful dinner party where the winners of the various games celebrated throughout the day. Guests enjoyed a delectable meal, and after dinner, attendees didn’t take long to hit the dance floor and groove to the tunes of La Boba band, ending an incredible weekend of supporting a wonderful cause.

El Fin de Semana del Hogar del Niño - Edición de Plata - se llevó a cabo el 18 de febrero de 2023. El evento tiene como objetivo crear conciencia y recaudar fondos para la organización y las escuelas del Patronato Benéfico Oriental mediante actividades de recaudación de fondos. Los asistentes disfrutaron de los tradicionales torneos de golf y tenis, yoga, el primer torneo de padel y pickleball, y un evento de pintura y degustación de vinos. El día culminó con una hermosa cena en la que los ganadores de los diferentes torneos celebrados durante el día fueron premiados. Los invitados disfrutaron de una deliciosa comida y después de la cena, no tardaron en pasar a la pista de baile y bailar al ritmo de La Boba Band, finalizando un increíble fin de semana en apoyo a una causa maravillosa.

“CROMATISMOS” BY THE ARTIST EN CASA COLLECTIVE

CLAUDIA MESSINA, Mary Rosa Jiménez, Olivette Santoni, América Olivo, Rocío Jiménez and Florence Wiriath showcased their diverse styles and perspectives at the WAO Galería & Cultural Center. The artists challenged the audience’s idea of perfection by showcasing experimentation through thirty-nine works of contemporary art. Each piece demonstrated the artists’ unique criteria and techniques, allowing the viewer to appreciate a range of exciting visions.

LA ROMANA TOURIST PORT TERMINAL EXPANSION

THE CENTRAL ROMANA CORPORATION inaugurated the newly expanded areas of the La Romana Tourist Port Terminal with a $15-million-plus investment. President Luis Abinader and the company’s executives attended the event. The expansion doubled the passenger leisure areas, featuring a pool, themed bars and restaurants, shops and spaces for visitors to interact with local artists and artisans.

EL CENTRAL ROMANA CORPORATION inauguró las áreas recién ampliadas de la Terminal Portuaria Turística de La Romana con una inversión de más de $15 millones. Al evento asistieron el presidente Luis Abinader y ejecutivos de la compañía. La ampliación duplicó las zonas de ocio de los viajeros la cual ahora incluye piscina, bares y restaurantes temáticos, tiendas y espacios para que los visitantes interactúen con artistas y artesanos locales.

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT that a simple gathering over coffee and snacks among three ladies would become one of the most popular fundraising events in Casa de Campo? The well-known charity event, “Café de la Leche” for the Hogar del Niño, ended the year with a fantastic gathering hosted by Julia Martínez at La Casita Restaurant in La Marina.

¿QUIÉN HUBIERA PENSADO que una simple reunión con café y bocadillos entre tres damas se convertiría en uno de los eventos de recaudación de fondos más populares en Casa de Campo? El conocido evento benéfico “Café de la Leche” para el Hogar del Niño, cerró el año con una fantástica tertulia organizada por Julia Martínez en el Restaurante La Casita de La Marina.

18TH PQ ASSOCIATION GOLF TOURNAMENT

THE PALOS QUITAO ASSOCIATION celebrated a successful 18th edition of the PQ Golf Invitational Tournament at La Romana Country Club. The senior category was awarded for the first time, resulting in the first senior winners by gross score: Miguel Barbero, Alejandro Santelises, Alejandro Zeller and Juan Ramos. The quartet composed of Roberto Pérez Treviño, Rafael Luciano, Emmanuel Rivera and Kiko Cabrera was crowned this year’s overall winner.

LA ASOCIACIÓN PALOS QUITAO celebró con éxito la 18va edición del Torneo Invitacional de Golf PQ en La Romana Country Club. La categoría sénior fue premiada por primera vez, resultando los primeros ganadores senior por puntuación bruta: Michael Barber, Alexander Santelises, Alexander Zeller y Juan Ramos. GOLF ENTHUSIASTS visiting Casa de Campo’s Dye Fore golf course now have an even better reason to rejoice. The driving range recently underwent maintenance and added a few updates, making it even better. The upgrades transformed the range into a functional and serene space to relax and unwind.

The Dye Fore golf course is already a popular destination, thanks to its stunning views of the Dominican mountains, the Chavón River, the Marina and Altos de Chavón. The 27-hole course spans over 7,740 yards, including seven scenic cliff-side holes that drop 300 feet to the Chavón River below, offering breathtaking 360-degree views. The course is a delight for players of all levels, with challenges and unique features that make it a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

To improve the driving range, Casa de Campo collaborated with the Jerry Pate Design Company and its lead golf course architect, Steve Dana. Casa de Campo was fortunate to work with this company as the team is also highly skilled in landscape design, which was beneficial in the upgrades. The design of the fairway areas is now reminiscent of the shots encountered on the courses. The strategically placed targets and bunkers will challenge every golfer.

The shaded pergolas at the driving range, with their Pawleys Island rockers and wooden benches, provide a relaxing atmosphere for golfers to enjoy while practicing their swings. The spacious parking lot ensures that golfers have ample space to park their vehicles, while the beautiful trees offer shade to protect golfers from the sun’s heat.

So, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, make sure to stop by the driving range and take advantage of the updated amenities because it’s the perfect spot to elevate your game, sharpen your skills and prepare for an unforgettable round on the Dye Fore golf course.

El campo de práctica recientemente ha sido renovada y ha agregado algunas actualizaciones, haciéndolo aún mejor. Las mejoras transformaron el campo en un espacio funcional y sereno para relajarse y desconectarse.

Mayra González and Lashmi Desangles are two interior designers with extensive experience in the field. They were recently hired to work on the interior design of Casa de Campo Resort and Villas’ new premier suites, which opened in December 2023. Mayra González is a Dominican interior designer with over four decades of experience. In an interview, she described herself as dynamic, honest, demanding, committed to the quality of her work and a lover of creativity and harmony. Her career began in 1976 when she graduated from the Interior Design program at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña. The designer has worked on many projects, from office and modular kitchen design to hotel and villa remodeling. She has designed exclusive and attractive spaces that meet her clients’ demands for all these projects.

“Initially, and I say this because I have deep respect for all styles, I identify more with the contemporary style, with elegant and cozy environments, wide openings, the predominance of neutral colors accented by colorful details, clean lines, and a focus on integrating nature into the design,” says González. “Of course, every space has its unique qualities, and sometimes it’s appropriate to combine elements of different decorating styles, creating an eclectic look.”

One of the distinctive features of González’s work is her ability to feel the dynamics and flow of energy in spaces. She seeks balance between forms and volumes along with the integration of nature. “I observe various styles of decoration and apply some while adapting to others,” says González. “From my perspective, at the end of the day, I believe that what really matters is that the users of the spaces feel at peace.”

En una entrevista, se describió a sí misma como dinámica, honesta, exigente, comprometida con la calidad de su trabajo y amante de la creatividad y la armonía. Su carrera comenzó en 1976 cuando se graduó del programa de Diseño de Interiores de la Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña. “Inicialmente, y lo digo porque tengo un profundo respeto por todos los estilos, me identifico más con el estilo contemporáneo, con ambientes elegantes y acogedores, amplias aperturas, predominio de colores neutros acentuados con detalles coloridos, líneas limpias y un enfoque en la integración de la naturaleza en el diseño”, dice González. “Por supuesto, cada espacio tiene sus cualidades únicas y a veces es apropiado combinar elementos de diferentes estilos de decoración, creando un aspecto ecléctico”.

Una de las características distintivas del trabajo de González es su capacidad para sentir la dinámica y el flujo de energía en los espacios. Busca el equilibrio entre formas y volúmenes junto con la integración de la naturaleza. “Observo varios estilos de decoración y aplico algunos mientras me adapto a otros”, dice González. “Desde mi perspectiva, al final del día, creo que lo que realmente importa es que los usuarios de los espacios se sientan en paz”.

For González, the most rewarding aspect of her work as a designer is seeing a space’s transformation and its positive impact on its inhabitants. However, she also recognizes that due to her training, she tends to be a perfectionist, which can be frustrating when she fails to achieve the results she is looking for due to unfavorable circumstances. Therefore, she has learned to value flexibility and adaptability as key tools for facing interior design challenges.

Her work in the interior design of these suites is an example of her talent and ability to create exceptional and unique spaces. González managed to combine elegance and comfort in the new rooms of Casa de Campo Resort and Villas, integrating the nature surrounding the hotel to create charming and welcoming spaces where guests feel at peace. Her ability to fuse nature and movement in these rooms is reflected in luminous, comfortable and elegant environments that meet the client’s needs.

This project is an example of interior design’s value to the hotel industry and how good decoration can create unique and unforgettable guest experiences.

Para González, el aspecto más gratificante de su trabajo como diseñadora es ver la transformación de un espacio y su impacto positivo en sus habitantes. Sin embargo, también reconoce que debido a su formación, tiende a ser perfeccionista, lo que puede ser frustrante cuando no logra obtener los resultados que busca debido a circunstancias desfavorables. Por lo tanto, ha aprendido a valorar la flexibilidad y la adaptabilidad como herramientas clave para enfrentar los desafíos del diseño de interiores.

Lashmi Desangles is an optimistic, cheerful and hardworking person who loves design in all its expressions. Her passion for details, materials and space within her designs led her to become an architect. Since she graduated from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Desangles has worked at different architecture firms where she has had the opportunity to work on different scales, including residential, commercial and hospitality projects. “Over time, I found my passion in the details, materials and what happened inside the spaces I designed and I began to feel comfortable there and enjoy it,” Desangles explains. “I love being involved in a project from start to finish.”

Desangles’ experience and passion for interior design led her to work with Mayra González, who was responsible for decorating the new suites at Casa de Campo Resort and Villas. González and Desangles worked together to create a unique guest experience by providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere in each room. The inspiration for the rooms came from the surrounding natural environment, using warm tones and textures to create a connection with nature.

Desangles’ style can be defined as warm, modern, cheerful and human. She loves the variety and change trends bring and finds it fun how they return, reinvent themselves and mix. “My interior projects have a strong architectural touch in terms of the vision of the space itself; the interventions and details complement each other as a whole,” she says. “I try to make sure that my projects have clean lines and that everything is placed in a clean and welcoming way, and that each project responds to the environment, brand or client for which it was designed.”

Lashmi Desangles es una persona optimista, alegre y trabajadora que ama el diseño en todas sus expresiones. Su pasión por los detalles, los materiales y el espacio dentro de sus diseños la llevó a convertirse en arquitecta. Desde que se graduó de la Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Desangles ha trabajado en diferentes firmas de arquitectura donde ha tenido la oportunidad de trabajar en diferentes escalas, incluyendo proyectos residenciales, comerciales y de hospitalidad. “Con el tiempo, encontré mi pasión en los detalles, los materiales y lo que sucedía dentro de los espacios que diseñaba y comencé a sentirme cómoda allí y a disfrutarlo”, explica Desangles. “Me encanta estar involucrada en un proyecto desde el principio hasta el final”.

For Desangles, each project is unique and special, whether it’s a house, a hotel or an office. She reinvents each project by adapting it to the client’s style and personality and guiding them along the way.

For her, the most critical challenge a designer faces when arriving at a building or house is to analyze the existing space, its virtues and what needs improvement. When asked about her thoughts on functionality and aesthetics, she says, “Both aesthetics and functionality must balance like in a dance. Normally, functionality is given priority in spaces where it is important, such as a kitchen or an office area. Likewise, there are spaces where aesthetics is more important, such as a lobby or vestibule. However, I understand that most of the time you can make both work together.” Desangles loves working on different projects where she can learn something new every day, whether it’s a new technology or a new way of doing things. She believes that if you love what you do, you live happily. “I feel grateful for the diverse work opportunities I have been presented with and cherish all the collaborations I have had the chance to participate in.”

Working with Casa de Campo was an excellent experience for Desangles, and she enjoyed the collaboration. She considers creating a memorable experience for guests to be one of the most important things when designing the interior of a hotel. Desangles explains that with this project, they sought to “continue the marked style of Casa de Campo but in a softer and more current way. Always with elegance and warmth.”

El estilo de Desangles puede definirse como cálido, moderno, alegre y humano. Ama la variedad y el cambio que traen las tendencias, y le resulta divertido cómo regresan, se reinventan y se mezclan. “Mis proyectos de interior tienen un fuerte toque arquitectónico en términos de la visión del espacio en sí mismo; las intervenciones y detalles se complementan entre sí como un todo”, dice. “Intento asegurarme de que mis proyectos tengan líneas limpias y que todo esté colocado de manera limpia y acogedora, y que cada proyecto responda al entorno, la marca o el cliente para el que fue diseñado”.

Para Desangles, cada proyecto es único y especial, ya sea una casa, un hotel o una oficina. Reinventa cada proyecto adaptándolo al estilo y personalidad del cliente y guiándolos en el camino.

Para ella, el desafío más crítico que enfrenta un diseñador al llegar a un edificio o casa es analizar el espacio existente, sus virtudes y lo que necesita mejorar. Cuando se le preguntó sobre sus pensamientos sobre la funcionalidad y la estética, ella dice: “Tanto la estética como la funcionalidad deben equilibrarse como en una danza. Normalmente, la funcionalidad tiene prioridad en espacios donde es importante, como una cocina o una área de oficina. De la misma manera, hay espacios donde la estética es más importante, como un vestíbulo o recibidor. Sin embargo, entiendo que la mayoría de las veces puedes hacer que ambas funcionen juntas”. A Desangles le encanta trabajar en diferentes proyectos donde puede aprender algo nuevo todos los días, ya sea una nueva tecnología o una nueva forma de hacer las cosas. Cree que si amas lo que haces, vives feliz. “Me siento agradecida por las diversas oportunidades de trabajo que se me han presentado y aprecio todas las colaboraciones en las que he tenido la oportunidad de participar”.

Trabajar con Casa de Campo fue una excelente experiencia para Desangles, y disfrutó de la colaboración. Considera que crear una experiencia memorable para los huéspedes es una de las cosas más importantes al diseñar el interior de un hotel. Desangles explica que con este proyecto buscaron “continuar el marcado estilo de Casa de Campo pero de una manera más suave y actual. Siempre con elegancia y calidez”.

“MOST PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED when they find out that big blockbusters like The Lost City or Old were shot entirely in the Dominican Republic and in our facilities,” Albert Martínez Martín, CEO of Lantica Media, tells Casa de Campo Living.

Originally founded in 2010, Lantica Media works on approximately 15 productions a year, including foreign productions shot in the DR as well as Dominican projects that Lantica produces. Lantica Media operates Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios in Juan Dolio and is connected to the United Kingdom’s Pinewood Studios, where Star Wars was filmed.

The world-class Dominican studio is divided between two lots and is home to three state-of-the-art sound stages, a horizon water tank, a unique infinity view water filming facility that is located right by the Caribbean Sea, production buildings, make-up studios and more.

“We have serviced more than 50 foreign productions since 2010 and have produced around 23 Dominican films, some of them co-produced with partners in Argentina, Spain and the UK,” says Martínez Martín. The Dominican Republic is an attractive location for Hollywood productions, thanks to its stunning — and diverse — locations, production infrastructure, local talent and financial incentives. The global entertainment industry noticed. “Ten years ago, we would have one or two international productions per year,” adds Martínez Martín. “Nowadays, we host between 10 and 15 major international projects per year. To date, a number of big-budget Hollywood films have been shot at Lantica studios or with Lantica’s assistance, including the aforementioned The Lost City starring Sandra Bullock and M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, as well as XXX: The Return of Xander Cage starring Vin Diesel, Shotgun Wedding starring Jennifer Lopez, Arthur the King starring Mark Wahlberg, and NYAD starring Jodie Foster. Lantica’s most recent production? The Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, filmed at Casa de Campo and based on the 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze. While the remake was filmed in the Dominican Republic, the movie is set in the Florida Keys.

It’s not just the country that is an attractive movie location: Casa de Campo, in particular, is one, too. “I think one of the best benefits is that it has everything a production needs: great hotel, fantastic villas, many restaurants, phenomenal service and safety,” explains Martínez Martín. “It’s one of the most production-friendly places in the country.”

Casa de Campo offers a wealth of possible locations: Altos de Chavón, La Marina, the Chavón River and the best villas in the DR. Plus, it’s only 40 minutes away from Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios. Even if Casa de Campo isn’t featured in the shoots, it’s the preferred place for talent to stay during production.

Road House is one of the biggest productions shot in the DR to date. “We are also very excited about the film; it was an unforgettable experience for everyone at Lantica and for the more than 600 Dominicans we contracted to work on the project,” says Martínez Martín. “The film was shot mainly in the Guayacanes area and at Pinewood Studios in Juan Dolio.” It also used beautiful locations in Bayahíbe, Santo Domingo and, of course, Casa de Campo.

“Casa de Campo has been a great partner since the beginning,” says Martínez Martín. “The Casa de Campo team have been outstanding partners to Lantica as they share our values of striving for excellence, integrity and passion for what we do.”

PAST, PRESENT POLO AND CASA DE CAMPO

Celebrating its eighth year in 2023, the Casa de Campo Polo Challenge is a benchmark for national and Caribbean polo practice and competition. Casa de Campo Resort and Villas has three properly equipped polo fields run by a highly professional team. No wonder more local and foreign residents are taking an interest in the sport.

According to Fernando Arata, Casa de Campo’s polo director, polo enthusiasts come to Casa de Campo, purchase property, bring their horses, build their stables and join the club. This is because, unlike in other countries, the Dominican Republic’s climate and Casa de Campo’s facilities allow for year-round play. The Casa de Campo Polo Club is composed of villa owners on vacation and community residents — most of whom are wellknown Dominican entrepreneurs who consider polo one of their most cherished hobbies.

Celebrando su octavo año en 2023, el Casa de Campo Polo Challenge es un referente para la práctica y competición del polo a nivel nacional y en todo el Caribe. Casa de Campo Resort & Villas cuenta con tres campos de polo debidamente equipados y manejadas por un equipo altamente profesional. No es de extrañar que cada vez más residentes locales y extranjeros muestren interés en este deporte.

Según Fernando Arata, el director de polo de Casa de Campo, los entusiastas del polo vienen a Casa de Campo, compran propiedades, traen sus caballos, construyen sus establos y se unen al club. Esto se debe a que, a diferencia de otros países, el clima de la República Dominicana y las instalaciones de Casa de Campo permiten jugar durante todo el año. El club de polo de Casa de Campo está compuesto por propietarios de villas y residentes de la comunidad, la mayoría de los cuales son conocidos

“We start playing with the horses at the end of December and continue in January, February, March and April,” explains Arata. “We take a break in May and June before resuming in July, August, September and even October.”

Jason Kycek, the senior vice president of sales and marketing at the Casa de Campo Hotel, also points out that the competitive and high-level polo played at Casa de Campo positions the country as a model in the Caribbean for this sport.

“We’re anticipating an exceptional polo season, and we’ll continue supporting the Casa de Campo Polo Club with everything necessary to raise the level of matches and provide for those interested in practicing the sport at our facilities,” says Kycek. About 20 players rotate between teams, accompanied by sports professionals from Argentina, including Luis Alfonso Paniagua Jr., Luis Arturo Carbuccia, Leo Matos, Alexander Schad, Oscar Quintero, Tony Rivera, Enrique Bonetti and Rafael Pérez Diez.

During the early years of the Polo Challenge, Casa de Campo hosted some of the world’s best polo players, including Adolfo Cambiaso, Juan Martín Nero, Pelón Stirling and Milo Fernández Araujo. Their knowledge formed the foundation of Casa de Campo’s world class polo.

“Comenzamos a jugar con los caballos a finales de diciembre y continuamos en enero, febrero, marzo y abril”, explica Arata. “Hacemos una pausa en mayo y junio antes de retomar en julio, agosto, septiembre e incluso octubre”.

“Esperamos una temporada de polo excepcional y continuaremos apoyando al Club de Polo de Casa de Campo con todo lo necesario para elevar el nivel de los partidos, además de ofrecer facilidades a todos los que estén interesados en practicar el deporte en nuestras instalaciones”, dijo Kycek.

Alrededor de 20 jugadores rotan entre los equipos, acompañados por profesionales del deporte de Argentina, entre ellos Luis Alfonso Paniagua Jr., Luis Arturo Carbuccia, Leo Matos, Alexander Schad, Oscar Quintero, Tony Rivera, Enrique Bonetti y Rafael Pérez Diez.

A DEEP HISTORY

According to Dr. José López, renowned Dominican doctor and former polo player, polo in La Romana began on the Campo Alegre field in Higüeral at the end of 1966 and the start of 1967. But it wasn’t until 1974 that the first polo field was constructed in Casa de Campo.

Dr. López mentions that among the first players who formed the polo teams in Casa de Campo were Álvaro Carta, Calixto García, Ramon A. Menéndez, General Cabrera, Kalil Haché, Juan Luna, Fabián Martínez, Alfonso Paniagua, Rolando González-Bunster and Héctor Vargas, as well as visiting international players, such as Cacho Melo and Lito Salatino.

Dr. López, now the director of the Central Romana Hospital, is optimistic about the future of polo in the country, thanks to the advances made since its early years, primarily due to the constant effort made by Casa de Campo to keep the presence of this elite sport active in the country.

The sport of polo in the Dominican Republic continues to grow steadily with the establishment of several new clubs across the country, such as Cap Cana, Puntacana Polo Club, Benerito’s clubs, Tony Rivera and Víctor Vargas’ club La Potranca, Rafa Pérez Matos’ club and the oldest clubs, Sierra Prieta and Casa de Campo.

UNA HISTORIA PROFUNDA

Según el Dr. José López, renombrado médico dominicano y exjugador de polo, el polo en La Romana comenzó en la cancha de Campo Alegre en Higüeral a finales de 1966 y principios de 1967. Pero no fue hasta 1974 que se construyó el primer campo de polo en Casa de Campo.

El Dr. López menciona que entre los primeros jugadores que formaron los equipos de polo en Casa de Campo se encontraban Álvaro Carta, Calixto García, Ramón A. Menéndez, General Cabrera, Kalil Haché, Juan Luna, Fabián Martínez, Alfonso Paniagua, Rolando González-Bunster y Héctor Vargas, así como jugadores internacionales visitantes, como Cacho Melo y Lito Salatino.

El Dr. López, ahora director del Hospital Central Romana, es optimista sobre el futuro del polo en el país, gracias a los avances realizados desde sus primeros años, principalmente debido al constante esfuerzo de Casa de Campo por mantener la presencia de este deporte de élite activo en el país.

El deporte del polo en la República Dominicana continúa creciendo constantemente con el establecimiento de varios nuevos clubes en todo el país, como Cap Cana, Puntacana Polo Club, los clubes de Benerito, Tony Rivera y el club La Potranca de Víctor Vargas, el club de Rafa Pérez Matos y los clubes más antiguos, Sierra Prieta y Casa de Campo.

Businessman Tony Rivera, who has been playing polo since 1983, also has high expectations for the sport’s development. He notes that with Casa de Campo’s support, the sport has achieved excellent organization, allowing teams to compete in a premiere environment. Rivera further highlights the improvement in player quality and horse breeding over the years and the interest of new generations in the sport, positioning the country for high-level international competitions in the future.

A PROMISING FUTURE

Polo events at Casa de Campo attract personalities and sports fans. Families also incorporate these activities into their leisure time, encouraging a new generation to get involved in the game.

It’s worth noting the participation of young Dominicans who are following in their fathers’ footsteps, such as Julio López, son of Dr. José López; Alex Schad, son of businessman Alexander Schad; and Ramón Andrés Brenes, son of Oscar Brenes, among others.

UN FUTURO PROMETEDOR

Los eventos de polo en Casa de Campo atraen a personalidades y fanáticos del deporte. Las familias también incorporan estas actividades en su tiempo libre, animando a una nueva generación a involucrarse en el juego.

Vale la pena destacar la participación de jóvenes dominicanos que están siguiendo los pasos de sus padres, como Julio López, hijo del Dr. José López; Alex Schad, hijo del empresario Alexander Schad; y Ramón Andrés Brenes, hijo de Oscar Brenes, entre otros.

Cuando se le preguntó sobre su experiencia en el polo, Julio López dijo que ha estado montando caballos desde los 5 años y

Inspired by his father’s passion for the sport, his aspirations include developing as a player, breeder and rider. “My dream is to become one of the main polo horse breeders in the country,” he says. Julio has 14 playing horses and 30 for breeding. To him, playing polo with a horse he’s bred fills him with pride.

2023 CASA DE CAMPO POLO CHALLENGE

The Sapphire Cup recently took place with teams including La Potranca, La Romanza, La Carbuccia and Casa de Campo competing. In the finals, Casa de Campo and La Potranca went head-to-head in a thrilling match, and Casa de Campo ultimately came out on top with a score of seven goals to six.

The Casa de Campo team consisted of Alexander Schad, Leo Matos, Dennys Santana and Alex Schad, while Tony Rivera, Bijai Singh, Modesto Constanza and Julián Díaz played for La Potranca. Leo Matos was named the most valuable player, and Maquinita, owned by Leo Matos, was awarded the title of best horse.

The Polo Challenge continued with the Eighth Annual British Polo Cup, presented by the British Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (BRITCHAM) on February 25th, followed by the Casa de Campo Open from March 16th to April 8th, with 8-12 goals each.

In addition, the First International Women’s Polo Cup of the Dominican Republic was held on March 11th, 2023, at Casa de Campo in honor of International Women’s Day. The event will be followed by the Dr. José López Cup in August. These upcoming events promise to bring more excitement and competition to the Dominican Republic’s thriving polo scene.

CASA DE CAMPO POLO CHALLENGE 2023

Recientemente tuvo lugar la Copa Sáfiro, con equipos como La Potranca, La Romanza, La Carbuccia y Casa de Campo compitiendo. En la final, Casa de Campo y La Potranca se enfrentaron en un emocionante partido, y Casa de Campo finalmente salió victorioso con un marcador de siete goles a seis.

El equipo de Casa de Campo estuvo compuesto por Alexander Schad, Leo Matos, Dennys Santana y Alex Schad, mientras que Tony Rivera, Bijai Singh, Modesto Constanza y Julián Díaz jugaron para La Potranca. THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC may be known for its rum and cigars, but did you know it’s also making waves in the world of wine? If you’re a wine lover searching for a gastronomic experience, there’s no better destination than Casa de Campo. From its breathtaking views to its professional sommelier and exceptional wine and dining options, the resort promises an unforgettable experience.

Simone Pinton, an executive sommelier at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas and winner of the “Best Sommelier in the Dominican Republic” award in 2010, is responsible for managing relationships with various wine, liquor, and other beverage importers and distributors in the country. Simone’s passion for wine started at a young age when he visited his grandparents’ vineyard in Italy and participated in the various harvest traditions. “During the harvest season, the whole family would gather to pick grapes, then we would stomp them with our feet in large tubs to produce must and trigger spontaneous alcoholic fermentation,” says Pinton.

Simone Pinton, sommelier ejecutivo en Casa de Campo Resort y Villas y ganador del premio “Mejor Sommelier de la República Dominicana” en 2010, es responsable de gestionar las relaciones con varios importadores y distribuidores de vino, licores y otras bebidas en el país. La pasión de Simone por el vino comenzó a una edad temprana cuando visitaba el viñedo de sus abuelos en Italia y participaba en las diversas tradiciones de la cosecha. “Durante la temporada de cosecha, toda la familia se reunía para recoger uvas, luego las pisábamos con nuestros pies en grandes cubetas para producir mosto y desencadenar la fermentación alcohólica espontánea”, dice Pinton.

“Wine consumption per capita has grown significantly in the country over the years, although the most consumed beverages are beer, rum, vodka, whiskey, and tequila, it is gaining a very important level of consumption,” says Simone Pinton, an executive sommelier at Casa de Campo Resort and Villas.

In 2015, after working in several restaurants and hotels in Italy and the Dominican Republic, Pinton joined the Casa de Campo team. Pinton’s training includes several certifications: a diploma in hospitality and tourism in Italy, a certified AIS sommelier diploma, a WSET level 2 sommelier diploma and a mixology diploma in cocktails, among others. He is grateful to the Dominican Republic for providing him with many opportunities to grow professionally. Here, Pinton has furthered his career as a sommelier, participating in various workshops, courses and enogastronomic tours.

When it comes to his favorite wines to serve, Pinton enjoys recommending new and trendy wines to his clients, giving them the opportunity to taste wines that differ from the classics. Pinton also notes that all wines adapt well to the climate in the Dominican Republic due to advances in wine importation and conservation. Poorly crafted wines tend to suffer more in the country’s hot climate.

While the Dominican Republic may be known for its love of beer and spirits, a quiet revolution has happened. “Wine consumption per capita has grown significantly in the country over the years, although the most consumed beverages are beer, rum, vodka, whiskey, and tequila, it is gaining a very important level of consumption,” says Pinton.

THE FIRST EDITION of the Latin American Fashion Awards is set to take place on November 4th, 2023, at the iconic Altos de Chavón Amphitheater in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. The event is the brainchild of co-founders Constanza Etro and Silvia Argüello, who have spent the last three years bringing the project to fruition. Its mission is to honor the region’s heritage, celebrate diversity and inclusion, and bolster the future of the most outstanding Latin American talent helping to shape the fashion industry.

CASA DE CAMPO POLO CLUB hosted the First International Women’s Polo Cup of the Dominican Republic. The event will feature players from Argentina, Italy, Paraguay, the United States and Venezuela, making it a truly international affair. The seven-goal tournament was created by Argentine polo lover and Casa de Campo resident Carolina Rainer de Matos with the collaboration of the director of Casa de Campo Polo, Fernando Arata, and the director of the Women’s Polo Circuit in Argentina, Patricia Panzarasa. It is set to be a momentous occasion for women’s polo in the Dominican Republic and beyond.
