As autumn settles over Lethbridge, our city transforms into a vibrant canvas of colour and community spirit. October brings crisp air, golden leaves, and a renewed energy for gathering, celebrating, and exploring all that our city has to offer.

This season, our recreation and culture calendar is brimming with opportunities for residents of all ages. From the excitement of Lethbridge Hurricanes hockey games to the excitement around Halloween, there’s something for everyone. Please remember to drive safely as the ghosts and goblins share their Halloween spirit in your neighbourhood.
As outdoor activities shift with the season, our parks and trails especially Henderson Lake and the river valley—offer stunning backdrops for walks, jogs, and peaceful reflection. Indoors, our community centres and facilities continue to host programs that promote wellness, creativity, and connection. October also marks a celebration of the arts. Casa Arts Centre’s fall exhibitions showcase local and national talent, while Celtic Jam Nights and youth art clubs invite hands-on participation. These events highlight the richness of our cultural landscape and the importance of artistic expression in building community.

Whether you're exploring nature, attending a concert, or discovering a new hobby, I encourage you to take full advantage of the many ways to connect, create, and celebrate this season. Let’s continue to make Lethbridge a place where recreation and culture thrive.
Warm regards, Mayor Blaine Hyggen

One hundred and fifteen years ago, on 3 October 1910, Lethbridge City Council passed a bylaw to replace the old street names with a numbered street system.
The address of every property in Lethbridge was changed as a result of that bylaw.
In 1885, when the settlement of Lethbridge was surveyed, every road was given a name. Most of the names were investors in the Galt company or staff of the company and their relatives.
Sir Alexander Galt and his son, Elliott Galt, saw this as an important way to connect the investors with the community and encourage them to stay active in the company.
However, by 1910 the company had grown dramatically and newcomers were finding it difficult to navigate the streets. As well, the post office was planning to start home delivery and
thought a numbering system would make their work easier. Further, it was thought that numbering the streets would make Lethbridge more modern and welcoming.
So, the numbered system came into effect with streets running north-south and avenues, east-west and the city being divided into two parts (north and south) with avenues numbered consecutively from either side of the railway.
Keep an eye out for some of the old names to still be stamped into sidewalks. You can find them in various places in older parts of the community.

What began in the mid-1980s as a small, passionate e ort in the home of Lethbridge arts educator Elizabeth Ginn has grown into an outstanding accessible arts education program, the Accessibility Modi ed Art Program for Adults (AMAPA). For Lexi Zeeb, coaching badminton is about more than skill development it’s about connection, growth, and creating opportunities for young athletes
Lexi has been coaching for five years, with the last two as head coach She works with the Lethbridge Badminton Club, volunteers in schools, helps with volleyball, and coached at the 2024 Alberta Winter Games. All of this she juggles while studying nursing, showing her passion for both sport and helping others
Her journey began as a high school athlete, where she competed at provincials Inspired by her dad, who founded the Lethbridge Badminton Club, and international coach Martin Lawrence, Lexi transitioned smoothly from athlete to coach “I enjoy coaching now more than playing,” she says “I love staying relaxed and teaching athletes ”
Her favourite memory so far is coaching at the Alberta Winter Games, where Southern Alberta fielded a full badminton team for the first time “It was so much fun for me and the athletes I got to see a whole new level of competition and learn from other coaches ”
Being a young coach hasn’t been without challenges, especially earning recognition from older athletes, parents, and coaches. But with time and experience, Lexi has built strong relationships and established herself as a respected leader What she values most is seeing her athletes grow, whether that ’s hitting a shuttle for the first time or finally defeating a rival team at zones.
This year, her dedication was recognized with the Coaching Excellence – Community Award at the Lethbridge Sport Council Sport Excellence Awards “I was so surprised and happy It really felt like I was being recognized for everything I’ve done, especially at such a young age It makes me excited to see how far I can go ”
For Lexi, coaching isn’t just something she does it’s a huge part of her life Her advice for new coaches is simple: “Have fun, and keep communication open Coaching is about supporting athletes physically, mentally, and emotionally ”

If you’re looking for a sport that blends explosive power with technical precision, speed skating might be your perfect match. With roots tracing back to 13th-century Scandinavia, it has grown into a highly competitive sport raced on both long and short tracks around the world. Here’s what makes it stand out:
Different Disciplines: Speed skating includes long track (400 m oval, one skater per lane, fastest time wins), short track (111.12 m oval, multiple skaters racing head-to-head), and marathon skating (often held on frozen lakes or canals).
Technical Gear: Athletes use long, thin blades— more than 18 inches for long track—designed for maximum glide. In clap skates, the blade is hinged at the toe, allowing for longer, more powerful strides.
Tactical Racing: Short track races often involve drafting, passing, and split-second decision-making, while long track focuses on efficiency, pacing, and time trial strategy.
Low, Aerodynamic Position: Skaters maintain a crouched stance to reduce wind resistance, demanding intense leg strength and endurance.
International Competition: Speed skating is a Winter Olympic sport with strong programs in countries like the Netherlands, Canada, South Korea, and Norway. In fact, speed skating (long + short track) is Canada’s most-medalled Olympic sport (79 medals)

Races are often decided by hundredths of a second, making concentration and technique critical. In short track, a single misstep or collision can change the race outcome in an instant.
Speed skating offers a full-body workout, builds cardiovascular fitness, and develops powerful legs and core strength. Whether you prefer the endurance challenge of long track or the thrilling sprints of short track, it’s an exciting way to combine athleticism with speed.
Clubs:
Lethbridge Speed Skating Association: Bridge Blades
Rinks: The Labour Club Ice Centre is the home rink for Speed Skating Practices in Lethbridge, and meets are typically held at Cavendish Farms Arena
Events: LSSA will host Bridge Bolt October 25/26th.
Take a glide into one of the fastest sports on ice—you might find your new passion!

Fall is the perfect time for families to head outdoors and enjoy the garden together. After months of watching plants grow, the harvest season brings fresh tomatoes, potatoes, squash, carrots, and even late strawberries. Beyond the food itself, gardening offers hands-on fun at any age and is proven to support both physical and mental well-being through time spent in nature.
Harvesting is especially exciting for kids, who can help dig up potatoes, pick crops, and suggest recipes. Being part of the process often encourages children to try new foods. Families can also collect seeds for planting or art projects, cut fall flowers for indoor bouquets, and prepare the garden for next season by raking, pulling plants, and adding compost.
Autumn is also the best time to plant bulbs for spring blooms. Kids can join in by choosing spots, digging holes, and covering bulbs with soil, sparking anticipation for next year’s garden.
Even without a home garden, local options abound. Community gardens, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and nature trails provide opportunities for play and exploration.
