Irrigation Water Reaches Lethbridge, 1900

One hundred and twenty-five years ago, on 4 September 1900, irrigation water reached Lethbridge.

The start of the project was in 1893 when the North Western Coal & Navigation Company merged with the Alberta Railway & Coal Company to form the Alberta Irrigation Company.

Work then got under way to get permission for the project and to ensure financing and labour was in place.

An agreement with the LDS Church helped ensure the labour was there, with Mormon settlers receiving land and money for helping to construct the irrigation system.

Lethbridge Town Council and residents also stepped forward and agreed to contribute $30,000 to ensure 20,000 acres in and around Lethbridge received water. This meant that a branch canal was dug to Lethbridge.

Construction on the system started in 1898.

When the water finally arrived in Lethbridge in 1900, even though it was a cold, miserable day, several Lethbridge dignitaries awaited the water as it crossed the town boundary and toasted the occasion with champagne.

Lethbridge Community Taiko Association

Taiko, the powerful and energetic art of Japanese drumming, has had a presence in Lethbridge for many years. What began as a shared passion among a few dedicated drummers soon evolved into something more lasting. Recognizing the need for formal support and funding to sustain their growing interest, a small group of enthusiasts came together to form a society dedicated to promoting Taiko in the community.

In September 2007, this e ort became o cial when the group received not-for-pro t society status. They named their new organization the Lethbridge. Community Taiko Association (LCTA). The association quickly established an adult kumi-daiko drumming ensemble and, since 2008, has been supporting its members and performances across the community. Today, LCTA has grown from fewer than ten founding members to nearly 20 registered drummers. The association continues to o er opportunities for adults of all experience levels to learn and enjoy the art of Taiko. Through exceptional guidance and ongoing fundraising, LCTA remains committed to the sustainability and growth of Taiko in Lethbridge.

The drumming group, now known as Lethbridge Community Taiko (LCT), bene ts from the leadership of music director Marc Vantol, who brings extensive experience and instruction. Together, the association and ensemble continue to bring the spirit, rhythm and joy of Taiko to audiences and participants alike.

BLOG

SUMMER FUN ON A BUDGET: PLAYFUL IDEAS FOR FAMILIES

A summary of an article on the Lethbridge Plays blog, submitted by Carlie Ramotowski, Lethbridge School Division

September is still summer in Lethbridge, and there are endless opportunities for affordable family fun. Simple activities like backyard water play—sprinklers, kiddie pools, or nature “soup” made with leaves and flowers—spark creativity and laughter. Sidewalk chalk can transform driveways into hopscotch paths, obstacle courses, or race tracks. The Lethbridge Play Map makes parkhopping easy, while free Park Pop-Ups bring games and crafts to neighbourhood parks. Explore the changing colours along the city’s river valley trails., or enjoy engaging programs at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, Galt Museum, Family Centre, and Lethbridge Public Library.

Old-fashioned fun also brings summer magic: picnics, baking cookies, painting rocks, fort building, backyard camping, scavenger hunts, homemade popsicles, gardening, and lemonade stands. These low-cost activities encourage play, learning, and family connection.

With creativity and local resources, you can fill the days with joy—no expensive trips required. Whether running through a sprinkler, exploring a new park, or sharing a homemade treat, the memories you create will be priceless. Grab the chalk and let the fun begin!

Start September with Healthy Habits

A Great Opportunity to Re-start Healthy Routines

Active Transportation - Is there a way to regularly walk, bike or scooter to school, work and activities? Leave the car at home when possible and build physical activity into your daily transportation

Make the Most of Busy Schedules - If your kids are getting back into extracurricular activities, spend time being active while they are busy - commit to walking or jogging rather than sitting and waiting

Schedule Physical Activity - Just like any important appointment, prioritize your health by scheduling physical activity into your week and then don’t cancel on yourself! Improve your commitment by planning to do it with a f riend

Heal thy Snacks and Meals - Take time to prep good food and pack snacks and lunches the night before so you’re ready to go in the morning

Sleep - Remember that everything is better (thinking, reasoning, patience, energy, emotional control, physical and mental health) when we get enough sleep Adults should target 7-9 hours per night, and school-aged kids need 9-11 hours

7+ years

Our recreational dance program runs from September to June. Class styles include ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, Acro, and hip-hop!

PEOPLE IN SPORT

Chris McIntyre 2025 Volunteer in Sport Award Recipient

When Chris McIntyre first stepped into coaching, it wasn’t because he had a long history with the sport. In fact, he’d never played volleyball. But he saw a need and decided to step up. That decision — to help out however he could — set the tone for a lifetime of volunteering in school and community sport.

Chris has since coached teams in volleyball, basketball, badminton, cross country running, slow pitch, hockey, and, for the past 13 years, ringette. He jokes that he’s had less to do with hockey, the sport he grew up playing, than just about any other — and he’s completely okay with that. His approach to coaching isn’t about expertise in a specific sport. It’s about being present, being supportive, and helping kids build confidence through movement and teamwork.

“There’s something special about creating a space where kids can connect, grow, and feel like they belong,” Chris said. “Sport gave me a lot growing up, and I just wanted to give some of that back.” What keeps him coming back year after year? For one, the athletes. Many of them he’s coached for several seasons. “They’re just so coachable. They’re good people. You can’t help but want to show up for them, even after a long day. Even for those late-night practices.”

Over the years, volunteering in sport has shaped Chris as much as he’s shaped the athletes he’s coached. It’s also reminded him that learning never stops — even for the coach. “I’ve learned so much from the athletes, their families, and other coaches. I’ve become a better person because of it.”

When Chris received the Lethbridge Sport Council’s Volunteer in Sport Award, it hit home in a different way. “This one really got me,” he said. “It made me think back on all those weekends away, early mornings, and latenight practices, and realize just how much it’s meant to me.”

Chris doesn’t volunteer for the recognition. But we’re glad he got it. Because behind every confident pass, every new skill mastered, every team huddle — there’s someone like Chris making sure the game can happen at all.

If you’re looking for a sport that blends precision, strategy, and fresh air, disc golf could be your next favourite pastime. Originating in the 1970s, disc golf has grown into a popular recreational and competitive sport played in parks, forests, and open fields around the world. Here’s what makes it stand out:

The Basics: Players throw a flying disc from a tee toward a metal basket with hanging chains that catch the disc. The goal is to complete each “hole” in the fewest throws possible.

Specialized Discs: Much like golf clubs, discs are designed for different shots—drivers for distance, mid-range discs for control, and putters for short, accurate throws.

Varied Courses: Courses range from beginnerfriendly park layouts to challenging wooded or hilly terrain that demands careful shot selection. Scoring and Strategy: Wind, elevation, and obstacles all affect the game. Players must balance power with accuracy to succeed.

Low Cost, High Accessibility: With minimal equipment needed and many free public courses, it’s easy to get started.

A Game for All Seasons Why Try Disc Golf?

Disc golf is played year-round in many regions, with some players even using brightly coloured discs to stand out in the snow. Its mix of exercise, mental focus, and time in nature make it appealing to players of all ages and abilities.

It’s affordable, social, and adaptable—perfect for casual outings with friends or competitive tournaments. Whether you’re aiming for your first birdie or chasing a championship title, disc golf offers a satisfying blend of fun and challenge. It is also perfectly informal. No need to book a tee-time, when the mood strikes, you can go play!

Take aim and see how far your disc— and your skills—can go!

OF THE MONTH MONTH

Lakeview Greenstrip 3120 Lakeridge Blvd South

This is the southern portion of the Lakeview Green Strip connecting the river valley and coulees and Henderson Lake Park. The playground features slides and climbing apparatus.

Play Favourites:

Angelica (almost 3 yrs) loved the curvy slide best

Parents loved the quiet neighborhood the park is located in and that there is a lot of green space for children and families to do a variety of different activities.

Parents loved that the playground has a variety of equipment including three slides and several climbing structures.

Park Perks:

This playground is great for any season as it has a hill that offers many fun activities such as rolling or running down it or tobogganing in the winter. With its big open space, this park would also be great for games such as tag, obstacle courses, or flying kites.

Play and Stay!

The park has nice walking paths and a baseball diamond right across the street. It also has another playground close by which could add variety and fun as well.

Pro Tip:

You may consider bringing along an umbrella for additional shade, some lawn chairs and a picnic lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables. Balls, kites, and bubbles would also be fun things to pack.

The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Plays will be featuring a different playground in our city all summer long! Visit our website to see all the great parks and their amenities!

“I am having so much fun, this is a nice park” ~ Angelica, almost 3
