Winter Tires and Rotary Plows: Then and Now on the Prairie
When the snow piles up and the wind chill kicks in, the first question most of us ask is: Did I remember to put on my winter tires? January in southern Alberta doesn’t mess around, and every year, it finds a new way to remind us who’s boss.
But as we bundle up and brave the highways, it’s wild to think about how people managed winter travel more than a hundred years ago. Back in 1910, trains were the lifeline of the prairies, but snow could bring them to a standstill. The Glenbow Archives has some amazing photos from around Lethbridge that show just how tough it was
In one shot, a group of men is out there with shovels, clearing the tracks by hand. You can almost feel the cold seeping through their coats That kind of work wasn’t just hard it was exhausting and endless Then there’s the moment technology stepped in: the rotary snow plow This beast of a machine could slice through packed snow and hurl it clear of the rails, opening a path for the train to keep moving. It was a game-changer the best way to deal with the kind of heavy snow southern Alberta is famous for So the next time you ’ re scraping ice off your windshield or spinning your tires on a drift, just think: at least you ’ re not out there with a shovel, trying to clear a railway by hand.

PEOPLE IN SPORT
Reducing Barriers to access
Access to sport should be possible for everyone, and Lethbridge has several programs designed to reduce financial barriers for children, youth, and adults. Whether support is needed for registration fees, equipment, or transportation, these options help ensure all residents can participate in the activities that keep them healthy, active, and connected.
Canadian Tire Jumpstart offers financial support for children and youth ages 4–18, helping cover the cost of sport registration and essential equipment. Eligible families can receive funding for up to two activities per year, making it easier for kids to stay involved in the sports they love.
KidSport Lethbridge & Taber provides grants to help children and teens with the cost of sport registration fees, covering up to 50% of the total cost to a yearly maximum. When equipment is a barrier, KidSport can also help connect families to programs that support gear needs.
The City of Lethbridge Recreation & Culture Fee Assistance Program supports residents of all ages by providing help with the cost of registration, memberships, and even equipment for sport, recreation, art, or cultural activities. Eligible applicants may also qualify for a subsidized bus pass to reduce transportation barriers.
Additional grant opportunities, including ‘Every Kid Can Play’, ‘Their Opportunity’, and others listed on the Lethbridge Sport Council website, offer further avenues for families seeking support.
And coming soon — a Sport Bank will open in Lethbridge in the new year, offering sport equipment for families who qualify, making participation even more accessible.

BLOG
FUN WAYS TO PLAY IN THE SNOW: CREATIVE WINTER ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES
A summary of an article on the Lethbridge Plays blog, submitted by Carlie Ramotowski,
Winter may feel long and cold, but it offers families many opportunities to play, explore, and enjoy the outdoors together. With simple, low-cost ideas, a snowy day can become a colourful and creative playground. Children can use spray bottles with coloured water to decorate the snow, building fine-motor skills while creating art. Families can also sculpt snow animals, using imagination and natural materials to add details and personality.
Classic winter games like Fox and Goose encourage movement, balance, and cardiovascular fitness while keeping kids warm and active. Imaginative play can continue with snow “bakeries,” where children use old kitchen tools to make pretend pies, cakes, and soups. Creating snow racetracks for toy vehicles promotes spatial awareness and experimentation through building slopes, tunnels, and jumps.
Outdoor winter play supports children’s physical health, boosts mood and mental well-being, reduces screen time, and strengthens family connections. With a little creativity, winter becomes a season full of learning, exploration, and joy.

FEMALE HOCKEY
A Sport of Skill, Confidence, and Community
Female hockey continues to grow rapidly across Alberta, with more than 11,000 players lacing up their skates and the numbers keep climbing. Whether a girl is stepping onto the ice for the first time or has been playing for years, there are countless ways to get involved. Programs range from learn-to-play intro sessions to competitive leagues and development pathways, providing opportunities for every age and experience level.
Female hockey offers girls the chance to stay active, challenge themselves, and build friendships that extend far beyond the rink Here’s what makes the sport such a meaningful experience:
A Healthy, Active Lifestyle: Players build strength, endurance, and confidence while having fun in a supportive environment.
Positive Development: Hockey helps girls set goals, work toward them, and learn from both success and setbacks, skills that carry into school, work, and life.
Teamwork and Belonging: Working together toward shared goals fosters connection, responsibility, and camaraderie.
Leadership Opportunities: Female athletes learn to communicate, make decisions under pressure, and take on leadership roles that help prepare them for life beyond sport.
A Sport for Life: Many participants continue playing into adulthood through recreational leagues, coaching, officiating, or volunteering
A Game for Every Girl
Female hockey invites players of all backgrounds and skill levels to discover their love for Canada’s game. With growing programs across Alberta and increased visibility of women’s hockey at national and professional levels, there has never been a better time to get involved.
Why Try Girls Hockey?
It’s fun, empowering, and full of opportunities. Whether a girl dreams of scoring a winning goal or simply wants to stay active with friends, hockey offers a place where she can grow, succeed, and enjoy the game for life.
