BLOG

FROM PACKAGE TO PLAYTIME: THE JOY OF CARDBOARD CREATIONS

A summary of an article on the Lethbridge Plays blog, submitted by Carlie Ramotowski, Lethbridge School Division

Have you ever noticed a child more excited about the box than the gift inside?

To children, a cardboard box is much more than recycling—it’s a stage, a spaceship, a café, or anything their imagination creates. This kind of unstructured, child-led play offers more than entertainment; it plays a vital role in development. The Play Today: B.C. Handbook highlights that children’s play profoundly impacts all areas of growth, from cognitive and emotional development to creativity and social skills.

Cardboard box play supports learning in many ways. It encourages creativity and imagination, builds problem-solving skills, and promotes physical coordination through activities like crawling, lifting, and stacking. When children play together, they learn to collaborate, share, and negotiate. Even more powerful is when adults join in the fun—asking questions, participating in the child’s pretend world, and showing genuine interest. These shared moments strengthen communication, trust, and connection. In a world full of screens and structured schedules, a simple box reminds us that the richest play often comes from the simplest things.

OF THE MONTH MONTH

William Pearce

Park Playground

92 Grand River Blvd West

The park celebrates William Pearce, who in 1876, along with Dominion Land Surveyors, commenced laying out the grid system that included townships, ranges, sections and road allowances. He is known as the father of irrigation for his work in developing the layout for irrigation in the prairies.

Play Favourites:

Mia (23 months) loved practicing her balancing skills on the dinosaur sculpture. Rhiannon (11 months) liked crawling up and down the stairs.

Benny (11 months) loved spinning the giant blue and red beads.

Adults liked the variety of activities, and the big mature trees around that kept the playground shady and cool. The steps were low enough for little ones to climb up, even if they weren’t walking yet.

Mia found pinecones in the grass and loved sending them down the slide.

Park Perks:

While not an overly large park, it incorporates many natural elements such as a canal that is integrated into the pond. There is a small playground located in this park featuring slides, swings, and a climbing apparatus.

Stay a While

The nearby pond has a small gravel bed to allow gentle access to the water. After the playground, our playground testers spent some time climbing the big rocks and splashing in the water.

Pro Tip:

Bring a fishing rod! The park has a stocked pond and fishing dock. There are several good fishing spots for anglers of all sizes.

The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Plays will be featuring a different playground in our city all summer long! Visit our website to see all the great parks and their amenities!

www.lethbridgeplays.ca/playground-of-the-month

This Park would be great for a game of eye spy. The unique fish sculpture in the water and the colorful playground would provide lots of items to choose from.
