Locomotive 3651 Turns 115

If you don’t know this Locomotive by name, it’s the engine parked beside the Lethbridge Train Station/Health Unit on 1 Avenue South.

Locomotive 3651 was built in July 1910 by the Montreal Locomotive Works.

The locomotive started its list as CPR 1851 and had its number changed to 3851 in 1927 and then to 3651 in 1964.

For years the locomotive hauled freight on the Canadian Pacific Railway Mountain Division.

Locomotive 3651 has been on display in Lethbridge since 1964, first in Galt

Gardens and then in its current location for the past 40 or so years.

GEOMATIC ATTIC WIDE SKIES 2025

Since 2008, the Geomatic Attic has built a reputation as one of Lethbridge’s most beloved music presenters. Known for its intimate concert space tucked into an unassuming southside building, the Attic is where you go to really listen, where world-class artists play just a few feet from the front row, and audiences show up for the music, not the spectacle. But the Geomatic Attic has never confined itself to one room. Over the years, the organization has brought performances to churches, community halls, and heritage buildings across the city—most notably Southminster United Church, where its soaring ceilings and natural acoustics have hosted some unforgettable shows. This commitment to taking music beyond its home base reflects the Attic’s grassroots approach: meeting the community where they are, and letting the space shape the experience.

That spirit comes alive each summer with the Wide Skies Music & Arts Festival, a three-night celebration of live music held on the rooftop of Lethbridge’s downtown Transit Centre. With the prairie sky above and the sun setting behind the stage, it’s a uniquely Alberta concert experience. This year’s lineup runs from July 28 to 30, featuring performances by The Sadies, Shaela Miller, The Boom Booms, Kim Churchill, Wesli, Blue Moon Marquee, and perhaps a surprise guest or two. From gritty roots rock to global rhythms, Wide Skies 2025 promises an unforgettable mix of sound and scenery. Beyond the festival, the Geomatic Attic continues to build community year-round through inclusive events and artist support, partnering with SACLA on initiatives like the Community Cabaret and supporting students through the Lucky Star Guitars Digital Audio Arts Award.

PEOPLE IN SPORT

All the Volunteers making sport happen in our community

Volunteers are the backbone of sport in Lethbridge. At events like SportFest, where nearly 40 organizations came together to showcase the wide variety of local sport opportunities, the dedication of volunteers is on full display. Behind the booths, programs, and smiling faces are individuals who give their time freely—not for pay, but for passion.

Most sport organizations in our community are run entirely by volunteers. Only a handful have paid staff, meaning it’s volunteers who handle everything from coaching to event planning to board governance. They willingly give up their evenings for meetings and administrative work, their weekends for tournaments, and special days like SportFest to connect with the public.

Their efforts keep sport accessible. If these roles had to be paid, the cost of participating in sport would increase significantly—putting financial strain on families and limiting opportunities for many kids and adults. Volunteers give because they care deeply about sport and what it brings to the community: teamwork, leadership, belonging, and joy.

Their behind-the-scenes efforts make the magic of sport happen, and without them, many of the programs we rely on simply wouldn’t exist. When we celebrate sport in Lethbridge, we are truly celebrating the incredible volunteers who make it possible.

CELEBRATING TEAMWORK:

HOW VOLUNTEERS MAKE SPORT POSSIBLE

TEAMWORK—BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD—PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN MAKING LOCAL SPORT EVENTS AND PROGRAMS POSSIBLE.

THE BACKBONE OF LOCAL SPORT

Volunteers make local sport happen.

Organizing & Logistics – Scheduling, registrations, and event setup

Game-Day Support – Scorekeeping, field prep, and equipment management

Ensuring Safety – First aid, security, and athlete welfare

Behind every game, practice, and event, volunteers work together to make sport happen.

THE POWER OF WORKING TOGETHER

Sport volunteering is true teamwork—each role matters.

Organizers – Keep events structured and on time

Field Crews – Ensure playing surfaces are ready

Equipment Managers – Make sure athletes have what they need Support Staff – Create a welcoming and positive environment When the pieces come together, MAGIC HAPPENS.

LEND A HAND

Give back, have fun, meet people, and be part of something bigger.

Community Builders – Bringing people together & creating lasting connections

Many volunteers wear multiple hats, keeping sport running smoothly & allowing athletes & coaches to focus on the game.

JOIN THE TEAM

The Sport Volunteer Hub is always looking for new team members to help keep local sport rolling.

No special experience needed—just a passion for sport and a willingness to help.

OUTDOOR

Roving Gyms are free, inclusive, play spaces for children five and under and their parents or caregivers.

AN ATHLETE’S MESSAGE

To their parents

Thanks for coming to support me today as my friends and I play. I want you to remember a few things please:

I am here to have fun, please encourage me and all the other participants no matter which team or community we play for. You are representing me; please don’t embarrass me by being negative, shouting or swearing.

Please don’t stand too close to the field of play, this can distract me and I can’t concentrate.

Please do not question the official’s decision; our coaches will give us help if we need it.

Do not coach me from the side, my coach is here to teach me and too many instructions will confuse me.

I think doing my best and learning skills is more important than winning. Do not tell me the score or to focus; tell me to have fun. Praise me for good skills, sportsmanship, discipline and effort. These are the things that make me a real winner.

Do not criticise my mistakes as I will be scared to try things again. Mistakes will make me better as I can learn from them. Please do challenge any spectators that behave the wrong way. Tell them that we don’t allow negative behaviour.

We have a responsibility to look after our environment, please do not drop litter. Take it home to put it in a bin.

I hope to make you proud of me, please make me proud of you as well.
