In 1890, Lethbridge was incorporated as a town.
In April 1890, the Board of Trade began to focus on the incorporation of the community and submitted its plans for incorporation to a meeting of ratepayers. Negotiations were undertaken with the coal company related to exemptions the company expected and decisions were made as to the boundaries of the new community. A Proclamation concerning the incorporation of Lethbridge was issued on 16 July 1890. The Board of Trade, as well as Elliott Galt, approved the proclamation.
All of this went before the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories.
On 29 November, the Assembly passed Ordinance Number 24 of 1890, ‘entitled ‘An Ordinance to incorporate the town of Lethbridge.” It received royal assent from the Lieutenant -
Governor that same day. A poll of duly qualified residents was required by the Ordinance, and it was duly done on 29 December, with the vote overwhelmingly in favour of incorporation.
Lethbridge was now a town, and held its first elections in February 1891. Lethbridge remained a town until May 1906, when it became a city.

Short Track Speed Skater , 2021 LSCAA Junior Female Athlete Award recipient, and National-Level Competitor
Born and raised in Lethbridge, 19-year-old short track speed skater Mikka Eaves has spent nearly her entire life on the ice. After growing up skating in local arenas and discovering a love for speed skating at just seven years old, she moved to Calgary at 16 to train at a high-performance centre. This past summer, her journey took her even farther east to Montreal, where she now lives, trains at the National Training Centre, and works part-time as a pharmacy assistant.
Mikka’s sport story started in figure skating, but a flyer her mother spotted introduced her to speed skating — the sport that would shape her life. Today, she is focused on her athletic career, though she brings with her eight years of coaching experience and hopes to build on that role in the future.
Her competitive highlights reflect her steady rise. In 2023, she earned the title of vice-Canadian Junior Champion in the 1000m, a result that placed her as the first alternate for the World Junior Championships. She is currently ranked 8th in Canada in the 500m, and she also holds the unofficial Alberta records in both the 1500m distance.
One of the biggest challenges Mikka has faced is the difference in competition depth between Western and Eastern Canada. With short track being far more popular in Quebec, Alberta skaters often miss crucial tactical development. Moving to Montreal has given her access to a larger, highly competitive training group — a change she describes as essential to her continued growth.
Looking ahead, Mikka keeps her long-term dreams, including representing Canada at the Olympic Games, close, but her focus remains on the steps in front of her. This season, she’s aiming for a top-10 national ranking and chipping away at the current 500m Alberta record of 42.9 seconds.

Powerchair sports are played by people with disabilities who use power wheelchairs. Powerchairs make sport accessible to athletes with a range of disabilities and eliminate performance differences usually associated with gender and age. Because of this, powerchair sports are considered some of the most inclusive sports: athletes of diverse abilities, ages and genders compete together on one team! (SIRC 2022)
From fast-paced ball sports to tactical movement-based games, powerchair sports offer competitive and recreational opportunities across many disciplines including hockey, soccer, football, and boccia. Each sport has specialized rules designed to highlight athlete skill, control, and strategy. Here’s what makes them stand out:
Specialized Equipment: Athletes use sport-specific chairs or attachments—such as footguards for Power Soccer or T-sticks for Powerchair Hockey—that allow for passing, blocking, and precision movement. Tactics and Teamwork: Success in powerchair sports relies heavily on communication, positioning, and strategy. Athletes learn to read the play, control speed, and make quick decisions under pressure. A Level Playing Field: Athletes are classified based on function, which helps ensure fair and competitive play while still allowing mixed-ability teams. Growing International Presence: Powerchair sports have national and international championships, and Powerchair Football is recognized by the International Paralympic Committee, with ongoing advocacy for Paralympic inclusion.
Powerchair sports offer opportunities for athletes of all ages—from youth programs to adult leagues—and provide a strong sense of community both on and off the court. Family members, teammates, and volunteers play an important role in building supportive, inclusive environments.
These sports build confidence, skill, and independence while offering the excitement of competition and the joy of teamwork. Athletes develop mobility skills, game strategy, and strong social connections in an environment designed so everyone can participate and thrive.

Clubs - Lethbridge Powerchair Sports offers soccer & hockey for individuals with physical disabilities.
Facilities- U of L North Gym
Events - Come watch the Lethbridge Powerchair Hockey Championship ~ November 23rd, 30th, and December 7th (1–3 PM). This is a ‘best of three’ series.
Join the action, cheer from the sidelines, or get involved behind the scenes— powerchair sports open the door to possibility for athletes and supporters alike!

The weeks leading up to Christmas can be filled with shopping, chores, and other preparations, but intentionally scheduling downtime for play can benefit children’s growth and make the season feel more magical. Carving out time in your calendar as “PLAY” encourages children to engage in independent play, play with others, and enjoy moments with adults alongside them.
Creative and imaginative activities include Santa’s Workshop, where children can make toys, wrap gifts, and write letters; a Christmas Bakery with playdough treats and decorations; and building cozy forts with cushions, blankets, and lights for reading or play. Fine motor activities such as ornament creation, homemade Christmas cards, and stringing popcorn or beads help children practice skills while adding to holiday decor.
Outdoor and gross motor play includes constructing snowmen and forts, going on winter scavenger hunts, and snowball target challenges. Dedicated playtime helps reduce stress, encourages connection, and balances the busy holiday season. Even short amounts of play can have a meaningful impact.
