The Lethbridge War Memorial, better known as the Cenotaph, was unveiled in Galt Gardens in June 1931.
In the late 1990s, a debate developed as to whether to not the Cenotaph should remain in Galt Gardens or be moved. With a new City Hall to be opened, would a site outside the City Hall be a better location? Where the Cenotaph could be better seen and better protected?
The Lethbridge Legion created a 12person Cenotaph committee to discuss the issue and they recommended that it be moved near to the site of the City Hall, then under construction.
In May 2000, Lethbridge city Council approved the move in principle and plans were made. The relocation permitted refurbishment and repairs on the cenotaph, as well as a few missed names to be added and some mistakes to be corrected.
The Cenotaph was officially unveiled in its new location at the Remembrance Day ceremonies in 2000.

New West Theatre is a not-for-profit arts organization and registered charity dedicated to producing high-quality, accessible theatrical experiences in Lethbridge. As an affiliate member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, New West Theatre has been a cultural cornerstone in the community since its founding in 1990 by Brian Parkinson. What began as a single summer music-comedy revue has grown into a dynamic company presenting a full season of diverse productions each year.
As the largest single user of the Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Centre, New West Theatre presents its shows in both the 488-seat proscenium and the 180-seat black box theatre. Each season, the company welcomes up to 22,000 audience members from across Alberta and beyond, while employing over 100 artists and technicians annually. New West Theatre's commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement has helped cultivate a loyal audience base, while also fostering meaningful professional opportunities for theatre artists in southern Alberta.
New West Theatre’s 2025–2026 season includes an exciting lineup of productions, beginning with Decades: Remixed (August 7–23, 2025), a high-energy music revue that revisits iconic genres and unforgettable sounds from past decades. In September, the stage transforms into a comedic crime scene with CLUE (September 5–20, 2025), a hilarious whodunit based on the cult-classic film and popular board game. Holiday cheer takes center stage with Holiday Rock (December 11–28, 2025), a festive musical party full of laughter, dance, and seasonal spirit. Rounding out the season is The Birds & The Bees by Mark Crawford (February 17–21, 2026), a heartwarming comedy about family, love, and second chances.
With a mission to inspire, entertain, and connect through live performance, New West Theatre remains a vital part of Lethbridge’s cultural landscape. Through accessible ticketing, educational outreach, and community programming, the organization strives to make theatre an enriching and inclusive experience for all. Whether you're a lifelong patron or attending for the first time, there's something for everyone in the vibrant world of New West Theatre.

Each Spring, the Lethbridge Sport Council honours the sport community for their spirit, drive, and commitment of our athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and sport leaders. This year as we prepared for the 15 annual awards, we witnessed something truly exciting and significant. For the first time, we received an equal representation of female-to-male nominations across all categories. This is a powerful reflection of the increasing presence and impact of women in sports. In all we were able to recognize and celebrate 10 deserving individuals, 1 outstanding team, 1 hard-working sport organization, and 1 long-standing event. Congratulations to all the recipients and thank you to everyone who submitted a nomination.
