June 1, 2021 Update From City Manager: An invitation has been extended to 15 organizations to participate in a discussion regarding the concerns that have been shared with City officials and staff about agencies that provide meals, hygiene supplies, and clothing in public places. The intent of the meeting is that we work together to develop an approach that will address the needs of the individuals being served, continue to advance the mission of the charitable organizations while considering the concerns of all our citizens and businesses operating in our beautiful city. The meeting will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2021 11:30 AM-12:30 PM at the Riverwalk Center, 600 N Indian River Dr. Representatives from Public Works and the Police Department will also participate in the meeting.

Responsibility: City Manager June 1, 2021 Update A lease drafted by the City Attorney’s office is under review by the ORIGINAL FLORIDA HALL OF FAME HIGHWAYMEN, INC. for the use of 1234 Avenue D (Jackie Caynon Building) as a museum and African American cultural arts center. Staff anticipates presenting a final draft of the lease at the July 2021 FPRA meeting. Since the unveiling of the Highwaymen tag, 58 presale vouchers have been sold. The specialty license plate was authorized during the 2021 Legislative Session, and the required pre-sale process began October 16, 2020. The organization must sell at least 3,000 presale vouchers within 24 months, before the license plate will be manufactured and available for Florida’s motorist.

June 1, 2021 Update We have annual training on mental health strategies. It is also the intent of the Department is to have all of the Officers and Support Staff of the Department to be certified in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training. CIT involves working in a team with mental health practitioners, law enforcement, medical personnel, and other first responders. The focus is to provide the best services possible to the individual in a mental health crisis.

June 1, 2021 Update 3/21 Complete 7/21 The MLK, Jr. Commemorative Committee has received a Small Matching Historic Preservation Grant in the amount of $35,000 grant from the Division of Historical Resources. The funds are earmarked to be used for the Lincoln Theater restoration planning. The Lincoln Theater Restoration committee continues to meet regularly, maintaining oversite of the project, planning events to raise funds and scheduling a community cleanup for the theater.
