PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD APRIL 13, 2025
Assigned to Christ the King
As I mentioned earlier, I began working for the benefit of Christ the King Parish long before my official assignment date. Monsignor Geronimo Gutierrez, my pastor during my seminary acceptance process, had previously served as the pastor of Christ the King. He kindly offered to assist me with any helpful information. The first thing he did was connect me with one of the most influential parish leaders—a couple, Gilberto and Rosa Sanchez, who had been helping at Christ the King since its founding, 28 years prior They organized a meeting at their home with two members from each of the parish's communities—Hispanic, Vietnamese,and English-speaking—so they could meet me,and I could meet them.
The meeting was a complete success. I listened patiently to the wishes and comments of each attendee, leaving them delighted. I was well aware I was joining a deeply divided community, plagued by internal conflicts and favoritism.When it was my turn to address them,I spoke in an inclusive and conciliatory tone,reaffirming my pastoral focus from the beginning: to move away from division and separation, and begin to live as one unified community in Jesus Christ. —one bread and one cup—regardless of our ethnic differences.
This simple gathering drastically changed the divisive and aggressive attitude that had existed within the community, and among clergy and office staff. This attitude had permeated the entire parish. From the very first day, concrete measures were implemented. There was new office staff, including a representative from each of the three ethnicities comprising our parish community, so every person could be served in their native language. Another issue resolved early on was office scheduling discipline, and a new general manager was put in charge of finances and accounting. Transparency, discipline, and professionalism were immediately felt within the community.
Perhaps the most urgent matter needing attention during this adjustment period was the parish's significant foundational debt, which had gone largely unattended since the parish's inception.This debt was incurred to remodel a supermarket donated to the Diocese of San Jose, with the condition that it be converted into a Catholic Church. The original effort was promising. From the beginning, the parish had adequate facilities—a church seating 400 people comfortably, decent parish offices, and an event hall with a 250-person dining capacity or 400-person capacity for talks, retreats, or teachings. At the start of my assignment, the debt stood at over $3.6 million,with no significant payments made in 28 years.
We quickly began an activity outside the parish's normal operations. Working weekly as a team to sell lunch every Sunday after Mass has allowed us to reduce our financial nightmare to a balance of $2.5 million after five years of volunteer work. But this effort also brought an unexpected result—a tremendous benefit to the parish community as a whole. This activity united parishioners from all ethnic backgrounds toward a common goal, fostering a sense of unity and community strength that greatly benefits the parish.
Undoubtedly, other unofficial activities in the parish contribute significantly to fostering social interaction among parishioners. Listing all of them together might sound overwhelming—and it is.These activities consume countless volunteer hours and require significant financial resources. But here's the secret: these activities bring vibrancy to our community, making it feel alive and, in turn,drawing a large presence to our liturgical celebrations.
Occasionally, I hear comments—perhaps not ill-intentioned but ultimately constructive. The two most frequent remarks are: “Why do we need to change this? We've done it this way for over twenty-five years, and no one's said it's wrong,” and, equally persistent: “The priest is always talking about money!” To respond, let me simply repeat what I always say: “This is your community, your parish. It doesn't belong to me, nor will I take it with me when I leave—because you are the ones who remain! In the meantime, know that every resource you contribute to the parish returns to you in the form of services your families need. I assure you; I don't

keep a penny of it. So don't worry—it's perfectly fine to always encourage doing things better and to always put a little extra in the collectionbasket!”
Something we haven't been accustomed to emphasizing enough in the universal Church is the ultimate purpose of all parish activities in the Catholic Church: the Sunday celebration, where the universal Church commemorates the "Paschal Mystery" of Jesus Christ—His passion, death, and resurrection. This is the fundamental reason for our existence and our purpose. Vatican Council II calls the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist "the summit and pinnacle of all our Christian celebrations," and adds that from it flows all our strength,and towards it are directed all the desires and aspirations of our Christian spirituality
Thus, the transformation of our parish began with the Liturgy. I find it hard today to recall all the effort and stress that arose from the first major decision we made: the complete remodeling of our sanctuary.The physical transformation was well worth the effort, and the collective endeavor demanded the participation of everyone who wished to contribute. From the very beginning, it involved a multicultural effort. The sacristy was also remodeled to facilitate, lighten, and make more enjoyable the work of the volunteers involved in preparing the liturgy At the same time, many challenging but necessary actions began right there to improve the celebrations our community deserves.
I vividly remember the day I asked one of the choirs, among the several in the Hispanic community, not to perform at any liturgical celebration until they significantly improved the quality of their music. I distinctly recall saying: “People come to draw close to God, to pray and meditate.They don't deserve what you're giving them. Instead of helping, you continually distract them.” After many discussions and disagreements, this led to the establishment of a professional music ministry, which substantially improved our celebrations. This ministry also permeated all our Spanish Masses and spilled over to serve in English Masses, and now includes a bilingual children's choir that doesn't disappoint anyone with their music.This choir has become a seedbed for the future of the community As a result of all this, the quality of our celebrations now reaches a much higher level than what we were accustomed to
Improvements also extended to other areas of the parish that required immediate and indispensable changes. Some of these began by finally addressing the persistent pleas of children in the parish's catechetical program. Every year, they consistently requested an English program despite opposition from parents who didn't understand why their children weren't advancing in their maternal religiosity We successfully transitioned to a general English program for all communities, with special groups in native languages for those recently arrived in the U.S.By the end of the first cycle,everyone was delighted with the results.
One of the most successful activities was actually suggested by the young people themselves: offering guitar lessons for children, teens, and adults. Additionally, a bilingual children's choir was well received, generating significant family participation in its activities. Seniors also benefited from English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. While it may be challenging for them to greatly expand their knowledge,they develop a basic level of communication that significantly boosts their self-esteem.
Special mention must also go to the youth groups and younger children engaged in recreational activities while receiving lessons that surely help them grow intellectually and as individuals. We cannot overlook the spiritual and human development program aimed at parents of children in the catechetical program. The practical teachings for family life are so successful that, initially,parents attend because they are told it's mandatory,but by the end of the cycle,they don't want to leave.
Undoubtedly, even as I write these memoirs, I feel overwhelmed by the many activities we've undertaken.Yet, thanks be to God for so many servants in our community who have found refuge and perhaps discovered the value of service in their hands—to cherish and preserve. This is thanks to the dedication of the office staff, complemented by the volunteers who, after finishing their workday to provide for their families, still make time to come to the parish asking, “Father, how can I help?” Thank God they've found a safe place in the Church called community—one that supports and helps in difficult times, gives them opportunities to socialize with other families, lightens their daily load, and undeniably makes them better human beings, to the benefit of their families and society as a whole.
Additionally, I must mention other responsibilities I've undertaken, not just for the benefit of the parishes where I've served but also in collaboration for the benefit of the universal Church. One of these activities involved leading a missionary team dedicated to assisting indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico The aid consisted of funding and coordinating efforts to bring running water to settlements that dedicated significant portions of their daily lives to obtaining this vital resource.
