The Holy Father’s August Prayer Intentions
Jesus already understood that people were not really concerned about the final count; their real concern was about whether or not they would be included among the redeemed. The Lord was also aware that in the deepness of their hearts a more important question was being asked, and what really mattered would be something like: “Lord, how can I be saved?” Will only a few besides me be saved?” Jesus’ answer is thorny, “strive to enter through the narrow door,” but the narrow door is difficult to enter, even after we have found it.

For small businesses We pray for small and medium sized businesses; in the midst of economic and social crisis, may they find ways to continue operating, and serving their communities.
If we argue that we were associated with Him, even when we did not believe in Him it will not be a valid argument. Familiarity will not take the place of that personal decision to trust in Jesus; a spiritual commitment is needed in order to make the difference between being the one wanting to enter through the narrow door, and the one who can actually go through it. Being known by Jesus goes beyond merely knowing about Him; it means walking with Him to Jerusalem, and being with Him at Calvary. Jesus suffering in Jerusalem is His own narrow gate. Jesus entrance through the narrow gate was painful and draining. It was there where suffering became part of the agony necessary to gain passage. At our Baptism, we Christian disciples were conferred with the responsibility of witnessing to the entire world the glory of God. People everywhere should be able to recognize God’s goodness in the way we live our lives and interact with them. Those who do not put any effort into “working out” spiritually will be on the outside pleading to get in. They will discover that just having been present where Jesus was teaching would not be enough. Today, let us offer the best of our efforts for entering through the narrow door into the banquet where He will recline at table with all of us present there. Strive to enter through the narrow gate!

En el Evangelio de hoy alguien le pregunta a Jesús, “Señor, ¿es verdad que son pocos los que se salvan?” Jesús entendía claramente que a la gente no le preocupaba realmente el saber el número correcto; la verdadera preocupación era si ellos estarían incluidos entre los redimidos. El Señor sabe que en sus corazones una pregunta más importante existía, que lo que realmente importaba era algo como: ¿“Señor, cómo puedo ser salvado?” ¿Cuántos, además de mí, serán salvados? La respuesta de Jesús asusta: “esfuércense por entrar por la puerta angosta,” porque la puerta angosta es difícil de entrar, aun después de encontrarla.Si no creemos en Él, el estar asociados conÉl, el saber un poco de Él, de nada nos servirá. La familiaridad sin fe, sin ninguna convicción, jamás tomará el lugar de una relaciónpersonal con Él. El compromiso espiritual es necesario para hacer la diferencia entre uno que quiere entrar, y el que verdaderamente cruzara la puerta angosta. El que Jesús nosreconozca va mucho más allá de saber acerca de Él; será necesario el haber caminadocon Él a Jerusalén. Su sufrimiento en la Ciudad Santa fue su propia puerta angosta. El camino a través de ella es doloroso y agotador porque pasa por el Calvario. Es ahí cuando el sufrimiento se convierte en parte de la agonía que nos lleva a entrar por la puerta angosta. El ser cristiano nos compromete, a través de nuestro bautismo, a testificar la gloria de Dios delante del mundo entero. Cualquiera que nos vea estará llamado a reconocer la bondad de Dios a través de nuestro testimonio. Aquellos que deciden no hacer nada por los demás serán los que se pondrán a tocar la puerta diciendo: “Señor ábrenos.” Descubrirán que el solo haber estado presentes delante de Jesús no será suficiente. Ofrezcamos el mejor de nuestros esfuerzos por merecerlo, entremos por la puerta angosta, hacia el banquete celestial donde el Señor compartirá la mesa con todos nosotros. ¡Esfuércense por entrar por la puerta angosta!

Trong bài Phúc Âm hôm nay, có người hỏi Chúa Giêsu một câu hỏi vì sự tò mò, “Thưa Thầy, sẽ chỉ có một số ít người được cứu rỗi sao?” Chúa Giêsu đã hiểu rằng người ta thực sự đã không quan tâm về số những người được chọn; mối quan tâm thực sự của họ là về việc họ có được bao gồm trong số những người được cứu độ hay không. Chúa cũng nhận ra rằng trong sâu thẳm nơi trái tim họ, một câu hỏi quan trọng hơn đã được đặt ra, và điều thực sự quan trọng như: “Lạy Chúa, làm thế nào tôi có thể được cứu rỗi?” Sẽ chỉ có một số ít ngoài tôi ra được cứu rỗi chăng? Câu trả lời của Chúa Giêsu thì nghiêm khắc, “Hãy cố gắng qua cửa hẹp” nhưng cửa hẹp thì khó khăn để qua, ngay cả sau khi chúng ta tìm thấy nó. Nếu chúng ta biện hộ rằng chúng ta đã liên kết với Ngài, ngay cả khi chúng ta không tin vào Ngài, nó không phải là một sự biện hộ hợp lý. Sự quen biết sẽ không thay thế cho quyết định người đó cậy trông vào Chúa Giêsu; một sự cam kết thiêng liêng cần thiết để phân biệt người muốn bước qua cửa hẹp và người thực sự có thể đi qua nó.
