Competition Winner of October competition: Sara Jones, Hay-on-Wye

Welcome to our November issue. Did you know Wye Local started 9 years ago? Once we enter the New Year I will have to start thinking how we’ll celebrate the 10th year anniversary. What a milestone and proud moment that will be. This month we say hello to our new designer Jess Ingham. Jess will be working on a freelance basis around other work commitments and her growing family. Just recently the Badham household came under attack of the horrid cold bug. It seems to be doing the rounds locally. Thankfully the team were able to carry on without me and get this issue out on time, with only a little help from me. Perhaps I’ll take a holiday next time seeing as they coped so well! Just before the October Half Term local families will have received a copy of our Cariads Family Magazine via their local nursery or school. Copies are also available in local outlets or you can view online on our website. I hope you find it useful for days out, shopping ideas, interesting articles, events…and more. A few new businesses join us this month: Herefordshire Care Homes, page 6; Edge & Rathbone, page 12; and Eirian Glass Studio, page 43. Please show your support to our new and ongoing advertisers. Clare has been busy speaking with local Christmas party venues, see pages 36 onwards. Some cracker venues to chose from for your family or office gathering. Lastly, have you purchased your Local Landscapes 2016 Calendar yet? Turn to pages 60 & 61 for more details, it’s a corker! Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Lisa Marie and Cariad Badham

This month’s prize up for grabs... The Old Railway Line Garden Centre at Three Cocks have very kindly donated a voucher to the value of £10 towards any purchase in the store. Please complete the word search on page 64 and send to us by 16 November 2015.

News from Talgarth by William Powell AM, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth In recent weeks we have enjoyed the kind of glorious sunny days that eluded us over the summer, and this, combined with the rich colours of autumn, has seen our town and its Black Mountain hinterland look at their best. However, whilst we have had some warmer days, the nights have been distinctly chilly and most of us will have lit our first fire of the season by now. For several weeks already, the Talgarth Christmas Lights Group has been hard at work – and the culmination of their efforts will be the grand switch on of the lights on the evening of Saturday, 28th November. I understand that Father Christmas’ Grotto will be on the Square from 5pm. A special feature this year is that free raffle tickets will be given out to all comers and the raffle will be drawn at 5.30pm. The lucky winner will have the honour of switching on the Talgarth Christmas Lights at 6pm. Recent days have also seen the now traditional Macmillan Afternoon Tea in Talgarth Town Hall, made possible by Cynthia Argent, Margaret Kite and their loyal band of volunteers. The event has become a really significant fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Care locally, by common consent one of the very best of causes, as well as being a thoroughly enjoyable occasion. It is only right that their sterling efforts are recognised, as well as those of Brecon & District disABLEd Club and the Dial-a-Ride service that it provides, as I flagged up in this column last month. The fact that existing groups of volunteers give further of their time for another charity is what community is all about. I have previously mentioned the dilemmas faced by Powys County Council, beginning to plan its 2016/2017 budget certain in the knowledge that painful expenditure and service reductions are on their way. The recently announced changes to PCC refuse arrangements are already causing negative

feedback – and the concerns held locally around the potential for increased vermin are real. I will do my utmost to mitigate the negative consequences of this and other changes, with particular emphasis on the needs of the elderly and the vulnerable. The County Council’s central problem is that, as a result of a renewed wave of public spending cuts from the UK Government that will be passported to us via Welsh Government in the next three years, a total of £27,000,000 will need to be saved. In an effort to involve residents in establishing budget priorities, the Cabinet has launched a Budget Simulator, which individuals can use as a tool for identifying potential savings. It is available as a link on the Powys County Council homepage – but others who prefer a more conventional approach can take part in the current consultation by emailing: consultation@powys.gov.uk or writing to the Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Wynne Jones, at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, Powys LD1 5LG. I very much look forward to seeing you at the forthcoming Remembrance Sunday services in Talgarth on 8th November or at one of the numerous community events in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if there is anything that I could help you with, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email: william.powell@assembly.wales or to call me on: 07703 112113. Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 6th November at 4pm at Talgarth TiRC. No appointment is necessary – but advance notice can help if the issues involved are complex. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you. Best wishes William

CHRIS DAVIES MP

News from Chris Davies -

Funeral Directors

C.C.JAMES

Your local MP

Well it’s that time again to let you all know what I have been up to in Brecon and Radnorshire. It has been yet another very busy month in Brecon and Radnorshire. I have been traveling from the top to the bottom of the constituency, trying to get around as many events as possible. As the show season draws to a close, I had the pleasure of attending many of these great local events that help build a big community spirit. I was very pleased to hear that Presteigne YFC were the overall winners in the YFC Section at Kington Show - very well done to them. I have also been meeting people in Ystradfellte, Beulah and Llanafan and I also had the honour of opening Nantmel Show. I have had a brilliant time visiting all the shows, fetes and carnivals this year and I wish them all the best for next year. I have also been at a cheque presentation for Cancer Research UK in Crickhowell, where the Crickhowell Vintage Society raised a massive £1,200. A huge well done to them. The farmers in the constituency all ventured to Builth Wells for the NSA Ram Sale, one of the biggest ram sales in the country, and I was pleased to hear that so many constituents had rams there on sale this year, proving Brecon and Radnorshire is home of agriculture in Wales. An issue which I feel will soon be imminent is the start of Schools re-modernisation programme. The local high schools in Gwernyfed, Builth and Llandrindod are a fantastic learning environment for our children. The “one size fits all” education model forced upon us by the Labour-run Welsh Assembly does not fit how education should be delivered here in Brecon and Radnorshire. I urge all of you to take part in the consultation process to keep our local schools open. Well that’s all for now but, if you would like to get in touch with me on any matter, please email chris. davies.mp@parliament.uk. Best wishes,

Hengardd, Pontithel, Three Cocks, Brecon, Powys

STREPTOCARPUS Streptocarpus is a popular, inexpensive and easy to grow houseplant which comes in a wide range of attractive colours. Flowering from spring to autumn, these plants will add colour and interest to your home for a long period of time. There are literally hundreds of varieties of streptocarpus and they are very collectable. As the common name Cape primrose suggests, streptocarpus originate mainly from South Africa, where they grow in wooded areas, enjoying moist soil and light shade. This is an easy environment to replicate indoors. Normal room temperatures are tolerated well. The biggest danger is overwatering because this kills the roots and causes the plant to wilt badly. Use either a soilless potting compost, or mix in some perlite for a more open texture to provide good drainage. Keep in good light but do not expose to direct sunlight as this will scorch the leaves, as will splashes of water. Healthy plants making active growth should be given a high potash liquid feed at a quarter the usual strength at every other watering. Pick off individual dead flowers, and cut out stems when they have finished to encourage the plants to produce more. Propagating Streptocarpus can be a simple and enjoyable hobby. It’s very easy to create dozens of baby plants, increasing your collection and creating new plants for gifts.

Looking to the West

‘Westward ho ho ho’ at the Brook Street Gallery, Hay-on-Wye, until 5 January 2016 Experienced curator Miranda Leonard formed her ‘pop-up gallery’ last year in Cornwall, and she has brought a selection of vibrant artwork to Hay-onWye this autumn. The exhibition features the paintings of Janet Lynch whose colourful expressive works inform us of the female experience; she uses allegorical subjects to express strong emotions and ideas. James Campbell’s work is deceptively decorative. His drawings and ceramic work have a strong link with West Wales where he spent his youth and are full of remembered images. Davida Smith is an etcher whose quiet aquatint

etchings are a soft and enigmatic evocation of the landscape. Two new potters from the West are Kim Donaldson, who makes sublime tableware in the majolica tradition, influenced by plant forms, and Richard Phethean, who throws and alters terracotta forms and uses hand cut stencils and layers of brushed on coloured clay slips. Three great Cornish jewellers are featured: handcut stones and simple, well-designed silver from Guy Royle; colourful and pretty work in semiprecious stones and silver from Duibhne Gough and contemporary hand-wrought jewellery from Debra Heywood.

News from Kirsty Williams

Quality Trips with

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon & Radnorshire A lot of people at the moment are very worried about parking in our towns. The proposals to potentially start charging people to park in the main car park in Talgarth have caused great concern to local businesses and residents. I raised this with the Labour Government in Cardiff Bay who confirmed that they would expect a full impact assessment before any such changes could be introduced – something I could find no record of on Powys’ website. There are also parking issues in Hay, Brecon and Builth. I am very concerned that Powys County Council has not fully considered the impact that parking charges have on the prosperity of local businesses. Powys County Council have also been in my sights over their ill-thought-out plans to limit bin collections to once every three weeks (they are even considering making it every four weeks). The Council have not put in place any real mitigation measures for these proposals. I am particularly worried that we will see an increase in fly tipping and litter as a direct result of the changes. I recently invited the Minister for Education to visit Hay-on-Wye Primary School. It was a good opportunity for the Minister to see the excellent teaching the school offers, despite buildings that are far from satisfactory. I took the opportunity to press for new buildings for the school and will continue to make the case with both Powys County Council and the Welsh Government. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who, last month, helped organise or attended a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Macmillan do amazing work helping the huge number of us whose lives are touched by cancer, and the coffee mornings are a great way of raising money for them. I attended one in Painscastle which raised over £1,600! If there is ever an issue you think I can help you with, do not hesitate to contact my office on Kirsty.Williams@assembly.wales or call 01874 625 739.

News from Glasbury Ward

by County Councillor James Gibson-Watt Well, it is 7 years since I was last a Powys County Councillor. My sincere thanks go to the people of Glasbury Ward for returning me at the recent by-election to represent them, I hope as a wiser (and older!) man. I must also thank my predecessor, Chris Davies, for the work he did in the Ward. The longer the by-election campaign went on, the more concerned I became about the vital local services the County Council provides. Indeed, since my return the Council received a very serious report by the Care & Social Services Inspectorate Wales, into the Council’s domiciliary care service, about which I heard a lot on the doorstep. Over the past few years service quality deteriorated appallingly, many smaller care providers were not paid by the Council’s main contracted providers, and a lot of public money was wasted. Some improvement has occurred recently, but much still needs to be done. We have not heard the last of this sorry saga. That issue, the continued threat to close Gwernyfed High School and the (in my view) very unwise move from 2 to 3-weekly refuse collections are the dominant matters of concern locally. I am pleased to report that the Council has now put all options for future secondary and further education in the Gwernyfed/Brecon area ‘back on the table’ for consideration. We can still retain Gwernyfed and its sports and community facilities. But it is vital that local people continue to make their views known. Please either write to the County Council Cabinet Member for Schools, Cllr Arwel Jones, at Powys County Council, County Hall, Llandrindod Wells LD1 5LG, or email him at cllr.arwel.jones@powys.gov.uk. First impressions can be misleading. But mine (second time around!) of Powys County Council is of an authority struggling to cope with 5 years of previous central government funding cutbacks and 5 more years to come. At times common-sense seems to have been abandoned in its decision-making. Whatever happens, I will do my best to ensure that common-sense plays a bigger part in all its future debates and decisions, which after all have such a major effect on all our lives. Please contact me at any time on 01497 820 434, 07971 048 737 or cllrjgw@powys.gov.uk.

Bore off! Here’s a little something you don’t know about me! Gyms bore me rigid! To clarify (quickly!); IF they’re run in the traditional way… Noticed the girl on the treadmill, coming in for years? She runs for hours yet her body’s exactly the same as when she started? See the lad doing concerted weights, then sitting for ages between sets? I mean what a waste of HIS time! I understand his methods, but there are newer, fresher methods to employ, which are effective, time efficient…and fun! I always ask my clients to tell me the instant they get bored, as I’ll always give them something new to do, but some resist change (or pain!) and stick to what they want to do and – sure enough – ennui WILL set in. OR they keep going for years (with wills of steel presumably!) – but plateau. It’s NOT even necessary to do a long workout. In fact let me share a ‘workout of the week’ I put up recently, that lasts just half an hour but will rev you up and give you something to work towards (and have real impact for fat loss and cardio benefits). Set your stopwatch ready to go. You’ll be working until it says 30 mins. Get on a rower. Do 250m. Get off,

do 15 press ups. Get on again for another 250m. Get off, do 10 press ups. Get on and do another 250, do 5 press ups, then last 250 – 5 press ups. Go to a treadmill and for the remainder of the 30 mins go as FAR as you can. Bang on 30 mins: record your distance. This system is transferable for anyone! Next time you did this you’d want to improve your transition times, and work that bit harder to improve YOUR distance (there’s no need to set yourself up against another). We hold a folder with 30 such challenges to liven up your routines! These short, sharp sessions (as well as mixing up gym with varied classes) will ensure you the BEST health and best chances of adherence. As with ALL smaller gyms we like to KEEP our clients, so ignore the cynicism you might come across in the media. Long-term clients are our lifeblood! Breathe new life into your routine – email me and I’ll gift you a pertinent-to-you challenge! mizzfit@mail.com Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Gym & Tonic Health Club

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer This autumn is coming a little faster than we want. Frost has been with us on a number of mornings and this sorts out some of the gardens – it certainly saw off the hanging baskets at the shop. Fortunately I had already arranged the winter baskets and, by doing this early, by the time I went to collect them they had grown quite well. I do this in the spring also, giving the nursery time to bring the baskets on really nicely before I collect them just in time for the Festival. It has been a very good year for apples and pears, we’ve had some lovely fruit brought in from local gardens of various varieties. The Grenadier cooking apples, I think, are almost nicer than the Bramleys but not as big or easy to peel. Discovery and Worcester eaters are well over and through October we’ve had lots of different Pippins, a good crop of American Mother and some lovely big Blenheim Orange. Also we’ve had Lord Lambourn and Laxtons, these latter two being somewhat smaller. After an early crop of chestnuts coming in very highly priced we should have the main crop in by the time you read this. Chopped up with a little chopped bacon and added to a good robust green such as sprout tops, you have a very easy stir fry meal. The sprout tops are good this year and some of the sprout stems are well advanced. I am hoping that by the end of October the local potatoes will be ready; they seem to me to be that much better than the ones from East Anglia. Whether it is an economy on the part of the growers or it is being done because of demand I don’t know, but we are getting more unwashed veg, particularly carrots and parsnips, and they are much nicer to eat. If you find the earth a problem when peeling the veg, I suggest popping them into a sink of cold water for 20 to 30 minutes before you start: this will soften the soil and make the job so much easier. At the end of this month we’ll be into the Christmas build up. The Day itself is a Friday this year so bear in mind that the wholesale markets will be running down their stock a few days before this – please don’t leave it too late to order what you need. Before all that, of course, is half-term and Hallowe’en which is a real children’s thing – I hope you all have fun making the pumpkin heads.

Jokes Gareth Sheppard of the General Building month & Plastering Specialist

Internal, External & Traditional Lime Plastering

by father & son (Colan & James Badham) A proud and confident genius makes a bet with an idiot. The genius says, “Hey idiot, every question I ask you that you don’t know the answer, you have to give me £5. And if you ask me a question and I can’t answer yours I will give you £5,000.” The idiot says, “Okay.” The genius then asks, “How many continents are there in the world?” The idiot doesn’t know and hands over the £5.The idiot says, “Now me ask: what animal stands with two legs but sleeps with three?” The genius tries and searches very hard for the answer but gives up and hands over the £5000. The genius says, “Dang it, I lost. By the way, what was the answer to your question?” The idiot hands over £5.

The annual Brecknock Family History Week took place in Brecon during September and was attended by many of the history societies located in the old county of Brecknock. The theme of the week was ‘local treasures’ and the stories and artifacts on display were fascinating. Talgarth Historical Society was one of those societies taking part.

With 2015 being the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt, Talgarth Historical Society has taken the opportunity to explore some of the Welsh connections, firstly with a visit to Builth Castle which is associated with a number of the longbowmen who joined the King’s forces, and then a talk by Bryan Davies, an expert on the Battle of Agincourt, for its October talk (on 29th October). This is followed in November with a talk by Jill Fawke on Tregunter House, a famous landmark in Talgarth until the house was razed to the ground in the 1920s. The year concludes with a ‘Dickensian Christmas Evening’ to commemorate the anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth on 17th December.

Wild in November

Protecting wildlife for the future

and these will be settling down for winter about now in a protective silk web. They will then emerge for more delicious Scabious leaves in the spring before forming a chrysalis later on. The butterfly used to be called Greasy Fritillary (from the shiny underwings) or even “dishclout” because of a supposed resemblance to a dirty dishcloth!

Marsh Fritillary Euphydryas aurinia Marsh Fritillary butterflies were seen atVicarage Meadows earlier this year, which was quite a surprise as the location was thought to be too remote for these not very active flyers. However, there is plenty of Devil’s-bit Scabious at Vicarage Meadows and in a few fields nearby and this is the plant that the caterpillars prefer to feed on. Caterpillars (see inset) were indeed seen recently

This is a declining species, threatened by the loss of suitable wet habitats so the sightings are very good news and emphasise the value of this reserve as a haven for plants and insects. There are work parties on the 3rd and 17th November for Woodland management at Pwlly-Wrach Nature Reserve. The 51st AGM of the Wildlife Trust will be held at Llandew hall on the 11th. REVIEW

A proper old-fashioned tea

The Secret Garden Tea Room It’s so nice to know that you don’t have to go any further than Market Street in Hay to sample a delicious home-made cream tea.The Secret Garden, run by Phyll Bowen of Painscastle Preserves, is what Americans would call ‘quaint’ and is reached by walking through Paraphernalia, the antiques shop at the front.

raspberry jam, and a jam I had never heard of before called Chuckleberry, which is grafted by a Bryngwyn company, Welsh Fruit Stocks, and bred from the redcurrant, gooseberry and blackcurrant bushes. A good flavour: so good that I bought a jar before we left. It won’t be long before we can buy the actual plants ourselves at Paraphernalia!

It’s not the first time that my twin sister Sally and I have ‘sneaked off ’ for a nice old-fashioned cream tea. It happened once before, long ago, when we were on holiday with the children in Devon.

Every morsel was delicious and sadly we couldn’t eat everything, but we did manage a very lemony citrus tart, a Welsh cake, some carrot cake with a wonderful orange butter icing, and a Victoria sponge. Oh, and a macaron! There were a couple of cakes we didn’t get around to eating as we were so full – perfect apple pastry rose cakes and some butterfly cakes – but Phyll kindly put them in a doggy bag for us to take home. They didn’t get given to the dog. Funny, that...

The table was set with an Old Willow tea service. Blue and white china looks beautiful set out on a white linen table cloth, with linen napkins and good cutlery, including a strainer for the loose-leaf English breakfast tea. The sandwiches and cakes were presented on a three-tier cake stand near a vase of pretty dianthus. We tried to take it slowly and pace ourselves so that we could savour every moment and enjoy the whole experience before we became too full, starting off with the rectangular-shaped ham sandwiches. Delicious ham that tastes like ham used to taste! Then egg and mayonnaise and then cheese and Phyll’s home-made chutney. Yum.

The jams and chutneys are made by Painscastle Preserves and are also for sale by the jar. The Secret Garden can cater for private tea parties, hen dos and baby showers. Painscastle Preserves Christmas Hampers are available, from £10 per hamper. A great idea! The old-fashioned home-made cream tea that we had is £12 per head, but Phyll reduces this to £10 for parties of six or more.

Then on to the home-made scones, the homemade clotted cream and delicious home-made

Phyll, a huge thank you from Clare and Sally for a wonderful old-fashioned tea. Perfect!

A weekend of roaring fires and good stories

Welcome to the warmth of advent with the Hay Festival Winter Weekend which runs 27–29 November with events across town and at Hay Castle. A weekend of roaring fires and good stories, great investigation, rigorous debate, books launched and a full programme of workshops and events for children. Prize-winning author Andrew Miller discusses The Crossing while Fflur Dafydd discusses the film adaptation of her bestselling Y Llyfrgell (‘The Library’) with actor Catrin Stewart (Dr Who, Stella). Paul Mason, Economics Editor for C4, suggests we are on the brink of a Post-Capitalist future, and Misha Glenny, the distinguished investigative journalist, discusses bringing justice and welfare to

gangland Rio. David Crystal leads us through a history of English punctuation with characteristic wit and clarity, and Bruce Robinson, the iconoclastic author and director of Withnail and I, finally solves the identity of the killer known as Jack the Ripper in his highly-acclaimed new book. Prizewinning writer Horatio Clare presents his new children’s tale Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot and prize-winning novelist Jenny Valentine presents her new book for teenagers Fire Colour One. Eat, drink, read and be merry! The full programme is online at Hayfestival.org. You can call the box office on 01497 822 629 or drop by the office on Lion Street to buy your tickets. Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains

The 20th consecutive annual Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains took place over the Saturday & Sunday of August Bank Holiday. The programme cover celebrated the occasion by illustrating miniprints from many of the previous programme covers from earlier years. The festival was opened on Saturday morning by Welsh Champion Fly-fishermen Paul and Patrick Sharman. Live music and dancing in Talgarth town square followed throughout the day, with community singing,Taiko drums, Celtic dancing and Country & Western catering for most musical tastes. The Gardening Show at the Bell Hotel proved popular and children’s entertainment was available in different parts of town including Punch & Judy in the town square and paint-balling and a bouncy castle in Doc’s Meadow. The food centre in the Great Barns and the Country Fair at the Cattle Market were universally popular. A display of local history was held in the Town Hall with some fascinating insights into the Talgarth of earlier years. Iron implements and tools from bygone times were also exhibited, courtesy of a local collector. St Gwendoline’s Church hosted the annual flower festival. Sunday highlights included the Festival Service at St Gwendoline’s Church, the annual Duck Race on the River Ennig, a firefighting display at Talgarth Fire Station and a craft fair in the Church Hall. Festivities ended on Sunday evening with an outstanding fireworks display at the Rugby Club.

News from... Glasbury Get-Together Club Our speaker for the September club meeting was Jacqui Wilding, a very enthusiastic lady supporting the ongoing plans for The Well Being Health Park at Bronllys Hospital site. A pleasing number attended the talk and responded well with questions invited by Jacqui. Plans and updates were available for all to see. Many thanks to Jacqui for a very informative talk. We look forward to The Well Being Health Park being a great success in the future. Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday 25th November, 2.30–4.30pm in Glasbury Village Hall followed by a raffle and tea and biscuits. Donations of small items for prizes would be much appreciated. The trip on 30th September was much enjoyed, with the benefit of a beautiful sunny day.The tasting of many ciders at Dunkertons in the old barn was very enjoyable, as was deciding what to take home with us. Penny, the lady in charge of sales, gave a short talk on the history of Dunkertons and the orchards, which we visited later.

We then moved on to Pembridge, and enjoyed lunch at Ye Olde Steppes. After lunch we travelled on to Burton Court in Leominster for a guided tour of the manor house, its history and gardens. We are hoping to have a theatre trip soon, but we do need interested people! Would anyone be interested in Swan Lake at Cardiff Millennium Centre, 11th–14th November? The list for Christmas Lunch is also now ready: please sign when attending the meeting, or give us a ring – Gloria 01497 847 726 or Judith 01497 847 274. New members welcome! Gwernyfed High School Open Evening Success! On 30th September Gwernyfed High School opened its doors and welcomedYear 5s and 6s to its annual open evening. The evening began with an interesting video depicting ‘a day in the life of a Gwernyfed pupil’, followed by Mr Williams’ speech welcoming prospective parents and pupils, attributing the school’s success to the ‘Gwernyfed Effect’.

What is the ‘Gwernyfed Effect’? The staff challenge the students to succeed and are relentless in expecting high standards. We believe that the students can and will achieve their potential through hard work. We support all of our students regardless of ability and we find that the pupils gain in confidence and self-belief. The new Senior Student Leadership Team (Megan Jones, Miles Finch, Dan Draper, Scott Dunster, Rhianna Hughes and Millie Jones) gave a short presentation on extracurricular activities, additional learning support, mentoring and inter-house activities as well as Miles’ speech about what life at Gwernyfed has meant to him. Sixth formers then took small groups of parents and pupils around the school on a tour, informing them about topics such as our uniform, timetable and homework. Parents commented on how well the sixth formers led and answered any queries they had. Visitors were then able to enjoy touring the school, where departments showcased their subjects with information on the courses as well as enjoyable interactive sessions. These included icing cakes in Hospitality, experiments in Science, questionnaires in Geography and competitions in PE.

Year 13 pupil Miles Finch commented “The open evening was a huge success due to the efficiency, friendliness and commitment shown by the entire sixth form and staff. It was excellent to see the positive reactions from all the parents; very well done to all the sixth form.” The evening was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by the many visitors. If you would like to come and visit Gwernyfed and see the ‘Gwernyfed Effect’ in action then please contact the school for a tour on 01497 847 445. Coming soon: School production of The Wizard of Oz – 23rd & 24th November at Theatre Brycheiniog. Hay & District Dial-a-Ride Our AGM was very well attended on 6th October where we bid a fond farewell to Mr Jeffrey Babb and Mrs Kate Hainge who had been hard-working Trustees since 2013. Lesley Moore is taking over as Chief Executive and a new Chairman will be announced after the Trustee meeting on 20th October. We also said goodbye and thank you to Chrissie Bentley who has retired from volunteering after 5 years’ service. We are always looking for more drivers or passenger

Hay History Group Thank you to everyone who turned out to enjoy the Hay History Weekend back in September. What a fantastic event! In total we recorded nearly 1,000 visitors, and our partners Hay Theatre Co., the Freemen of Gwent, the Cavalry of Heroes and Hay Castle Trust were all delighted to have received such support from a local crowd. Our next event is the Smith-Soldat Memorial Lecture, taking place at 4pm on Saturday 28 November as part of the Hay Festival Winter Weekend, which runs 27–29 November. Our guest speaker this year is landscape historian David Lovelace, who uses a combination of ancient maps and modern digital technology to reveal the hidden history of landscapes. His talk, exploring the history of the Herefordshire landscape, will follow on from a Hay Railway Tour being run by members of Hay History Group earlier in the day (11.30am–1.00pm). This links to another Hay Festival event about British railways, with author Simon Bradley, whose book The Railways: Nation, Network and People will also be discussed at the Winter Weekend. Funds raised by H2T are being well used as the school year gets underway in Timbuktu. The Girls Bursary Project enters its third year with all the students successfully moving up a year grade and those leaving our three partner schools continuing education in other settings. Full details at hay2timbuktu.org.uk. Twelve computers are on their way to Timbuktu, funded by local support, to enable students to talk directly to students here, and the funds sent to provide English lessons will help this communication. The Medic’s maternal health projects continue to have a big impact and funds raised at December’s ‘Food for Thought’ event at Booths will assist in this work. Plans are underway to welcome visitors from Mali in 2016: the involvement of the people of Hay is important to this visit. Please send your ideas and offers of help to info@hay2timbuktu.org.uk and think about becoming a Friend. Homemade gift ideas... Reindeer Noses Mason Gift Jars

Edible Birdhouse If you are quick you can craft one of these DIY edible birdhouses to give as a last minute homemade gift idea for a garden lover or bird watcher. These make stunning DIY gifts for Christmas or all year round for birthdays, Mother’s Day, or any other gift occasion and make a great DIY spring craft project. To start you’ll first need to buy an unfinished wooden birdhouse from a craft store. Drill two holes in the top of the birdhouse and string thin rope or heavy ribbon or twine through the holes and knot securely in a loop. This allows the birdhouse to be hung in a tree or another favorite location. Next, gather all of your edible ingredients you’d like to include on the birdhouse for the birds to eat. You can buy birdseed and millet in bulk as well as apples and oranges. For the apples, slice then soak in lemon juice and salt so they don’t brown then dry in an oven on low heat. For oranges, simply slice and dry in the oven. You can also use dried fruits you’ve purchased including cranberries, pineapples and raisins – even coconut! Once you have all of the ingredients to go onto your birdhouse, you’ll need to make the paste to adhere them to the birdhouse base. To make the paste, combine 3 Cups Wheat Flour, 2 Cup Waters, and 3/4 Cup Honey. If honey is too expensive in your area, you can substitute it with corn syrup. You can multiply or divide this recipe to make more or less of the paste depending on how many houses you plan to make. Now that your paste is made, all that is left is to apply the paste to the birdhouse and press the seeds and dried fruits into the paste! Allow to dry, add some decorative ribbon and a gift tag, and present to your recipient!

You will need: Chocolate balls, red gumballs for Rudolph’s nose, brown pipe cleaners, tags, hot glue gun, mason jars, ribbon, googly eyes and red bright pom poms. Wrap tape / paper around the jar and paint brown. Then glue on the googly eyes and nose so that your reindeer has a face! Wrap the ribbon around the lid of the jar. Use the pipe cleaners for his antlers. Cut them up and glue them to each other and stick them on the top of the jar. For the labels, glue the little tag reindeer on the square tag and write your message! Fill the jar full with the chocolate balls and red gumballs and enjoy!

L OCAL L ANDSCAPES 2016 CALENDAR

All photographs taken within the Brecon Beacons National Park

Our beautiful surroundings and the superb talent has made this possible This is our 8th year of producing the Local Landscapes Calendar. The combination of our beautiful surroundings and the superb talent has made this possible.

Every year I question will it come to fruition? Will this be the year that we don’t get to press as we just haven’t had the quality of photographs sent in to our annual photo competition? Well eight years on, we’ve not let the growing buyers down yet. Within the 2016 Calendar we include an amazing array of scenes such as the Black Mountains, Elidir Trail, Llangorse Lake and Talybont Reservoir. We even include the Wellington Bomber Memorial. Each of the 12 images have been taken within the Brecon Beacons National Park. In May this year our first batch hit the shops. Many copies purchased by visitors to the area. Our aim,

for them to take them home and when they are reminded day upon day in 2016 of what a beautiful area the Brecon Beacons National Park is, they’ll return. And who knows, maybe even purchase another calendar! This time of year we see sales take a positive increase. Local people buy them for friends and family. Some sent nearby, some sent all over the world. We have a stall at the various local fairs in the run up to Christmas. For us this is a chance to meet our readers as well as selling our calendar. We try to ask where each one is being sent if it’s intended as a present. Many go to New Zealand and Australia, last year one went to Guatemala! Please do buy your copy in the coming weeks. We hope to be at a few fairs in the Festive season so please come and say Hello.
