Our sister publication Local Ludlow celebrates its first anniversary this month. Starting off in July 2018 as a 20-page magazine, it’s galloping into July 2019 as a 48-page magazine. We love having the three titles – Wye Local, Local Beacon and Local Ludlow – to produce each month. It certainly keeps us on our toes.

New in Town: XT Driver Training Welcome to XT Driver Training! My name is Roy and I am a Driving Instructor. I have been in the industry since 2002, originally known as 1st Gear School of Motoring. Unfortunately due to health circumstances I had to give up after eight years. However, I have now returned to the industry I enjoy. It is a great feeling taking a pupil from never having driven to passing their test and being confident on the road. I have many years’ experience of driving both here in the UK and on the continent, so I have a great deal of driver knowledge and I pass this on in all my lessons, so that not only are my pupils trained for passing the L test but also for driving for life. I am locally based in Eardisley, a few miles from Hay-on-Wye, and I cover all three local test centres

– Brecon, Hereford and Llandrindod Wells. My day varies depending on which location I’m working in with pupils, so I’m lucky to get to see different parts of the county and different people all the time, as well as keeping the training car clean and tidy. Previously I was in the Forces and moved into management early in my career; my management has been in Retail, Sales and Recruitment and I believe this has given me a great wealth of knowledge to bring to the role of Driving Instructor, in that I have ‘the patience of a saint’, so am confident and understanding when dealing with nervous pupils and enjoy working with and meeting new people. You will find me a patient, understanding and friendly instructor who enjoys working with people to achieve their goal in learning to drive safely. Get to really know... Hannah Price Hannah lives in Rhosgoch and works as a physiotherapist; treating people, horses, dogs, cats and the odd cow or bull! She loves where she lives and enjoys travelling throughout the county to see clients. Place of birth? Hereford. Where do you live now? Rhosgoch, near Painscastle. Marital status? Married to Ollie Price. Occupation? Physiotherapist; treating people and animals. Children? Two wonderful children – Nia (6) and Callum (4). Pets? Several horses and ponies, a German Shorthaired Pointer – Oscar, a cat – Mistletoe, and two guinea pigs – Fudge and Sniff Sniff. What was your favourite childhood television programme? I loved Going Round the Twist! Name one thing you miss about being a kid: No responsibilities and summer holidays lasting forever! Name one thing you love about being an adult: My children – watching them grow into wonderful people. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I’ve always looked in wonder at Red Kites – flying over where we live must be amazing. But I’d live near Gigrin Farm so I could be well fed! If you could have any superpower, what would it be? X-ray vision would be great for my job. But otherwise something to help others… What is usually your first thought when you wake up? ‘PE kit, lunches, book bag, coat/sun cream, money for trip, boots for horse visit, laser, ultrasound...’ Basically a run through of all the things I need to leave the house with on the school run!

Most exciting thing you’ve won? Riding Club Area Team Showjumping, and taking our horses to Ireland to compete in the Nations Cup. Are you a collector of anything? Nothing apart from animals! Two lessons life has taught you? Be kind and don’t pass judgement – I suppose we never know what someone else may be going through. What makes you grumpy? Lack of sleep. Have any bad habits? Being late... Which bad habits drive you crazy? My daughter biting her toenails! Do you believe in the afterlife? Yes. What book would you recommend to others? I LOVE The Horse Dancer by JoJo Moyes – and pretty much anything else she’s ever written. Best present ever received? My engagement ring. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would love to visit the Taj Mahal. The place seems absolutely breathtaking and magical. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Ride my horse on the beach, zip-wire at Snowdon, visit the Taj Mahal, see friends and family as much as possible, and enjoy life. Name one regret you have: None! What’s your favourite song of all time? Stereophonics – ‘Local boy in the photograph’. Have any hidden talents? Nope! What would be your dream job? My job is my dream job – I’m very lucky. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Planned a joint party for my little people, made cakes and party food, and collapsed in a heap when it was all over! Sum yourself up in five words: Hardworking, loyal, happy, determined (stubborn!) and helpful.

Local Talent: Janice Day Type of artist? Writer/entertainer. Range of products? A book, Getting It Off My Chest, Hay Jazz concerts, 1920s/30s cabarets. Price range? Hay Jazz concerts: £12. Private cabarets: negotiable. E-book: £3.99. How long have you been an artist? I’ve been performing in public since I was four. I won my first writing competition when I was eight and organised my first event when I was ten. With limited overheads (i.e. the tent collapsed) and only one audience member – who didn’t take his nose out of The Beano – it was a miracle that ticket sales were in profit at three shillings and sixpence, which I donated to the local Elderly Day Centre. It’s been downhill ever since. Where did you train or gain experience? I read English Literature at Birmingham University, did an MA in screenwriting at the London College of Printing and learned to entertain on the job. I was a dance band singer for many years: the original singer with the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra and Keith Nichol’s Cotton Club Orchestra, and then developed a musical comedy cabaret act called Mrs PinkertonLovely and her Little Stringed Instrument. Recently, I’ve been learning from my husband, jazz pianist Martin Litton, and my friend, musical educationalist Lucy Green. My specialism is the popular and dance band repertoire of the 1920s and ‘30s, commonly called Classic Jazz. I’ve performed at jazz festivals, clubs and concerts all over the world, until I took a career break to bring up my children and to focus on writing. My first book, a comedy cancer memoir called Getting It Off My Chest, was published by Old Street Publications. After some years as a commissioned screenwriter I’m now working on my second memoir, Butterfly With a Backpack, which is about growing up with ADHD before it was invented. Upon moving to Hay eighteen months ago I founded Hay Jazz which brings top classic jazz performers to St Mary’s in Hay for variety concerts. Artist statement: I am half-Welsh on my father’s side, so singing is in my blood. I’ve noticed that I am only content if I sing and write every day. Having profound ADHD makes life difficult in many ways, but the upside is a wealth of creativity. My mission has

always been to entertain, either by writing, singing or making people laugh. Where can your products be purchased? By email from day. janice@gmail.com or online at www.hayjazz.org and www.janiceday.co.uk. What has been your proudest moment? Getting signed by a top London literary agency; and a private moment: like most artists I am my worst critic, never satisfied with anything I do, but once I heard a vocalist singing on a practice tape for the dance orchestra I used to work for, and thought, “Who’s that? She’s good!” in the split second before I realised it was me. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? My book: Getting It Off My Chest: How I lost my breast and found myself, and an album I made with Keith Nichols, called I Like To Do Things for You. Have you any future plans for your work? To crowd-fund an album of songs backed by a 22-piece orchestra with Nelson Riddle-type arrangements. I’d like to start a monthly jazz club in Hay. I’m also the entertainments officer for Haydloniant, which is a community organisation dedicated to promoting local entertainers and I’d like to be instrumental in helping that to grow. I’d like to run a workshop to help inexperienced local talent with their performance skills. What advice would you give a local artist? Writers: self-publish and market your own work. Performers: try out your material at the Open Mic at The Globe in Hay. Take risks. Don’t believe you can’t do anything you want. You can. What other local artists do you admire? Writer Barbara Erskine, illustrator Lizzie Harper, mask artist Circo Gringo, singer/guitarist Justin Preece, early music singer Lucy Green, classical singer Catherine Hughes, singer/guitarist Kate Hardy, icon painter and signwriter Christina Watson, jazz pianist Martin Litton. Many more.

19/06/2019 21:35

Q&A with Graham Nolan River Flow Yoga How long have you been teaching yoga? I’ve been teaching for over 10 years and practising yoga for over 20 years. What made you decide to teach? When I found my first great teacher – I was inspired. I initially wanted to study yoga further, so did my foundation course with the British Wheel of Yoga. After that I did my diploma in teaching which took me over two years of study. At the same time I was working full time as a deafblind specialist, studying sign language and doing my diploma in deafblind studies. All of my studies and work seemed to weave together in my mind. I decided to try and use yoga as a way of supporting people who were congenitally deafblind. I have presented this work internationally and am passionate about the beauty of human connection and how yoga is a tool to help us develop deeper connections with ourselves and others. Do you specialise in a certain type of yoga? My training is very wide ranging and that’s why I chose it. I teach really gentle and accessible classes for older adults, and I also teach really strong Vinyasa classes for fit gym-goers. I believe yoga really is beneficial for everyone and try to run a range of classes to give a bit of something for everyone. I’ll always be nurturing in my classes, but I’ll also get you to challenge yourself; for some people that means learning to breathe and relax, for others it’s about holding planks and arm balances! Where has your teaching taken you? All over the world. I’ve been very blessed in my career and have presented my work at conferences and held lectures on deafblindness. Where are you based now? I’m from London originally but my home is in Glasbury. I have been incredibly lucky to be welcomed by a warm, open and beautiful community. I feel blessed every day to live here. Do you continue to train? Yes! I love learning and developing my knowledge. I’ve just graduated with my MSc from Groningen in the Netherlands. My thesis was about using yoga and mindfulness with social care staff to support them to become more beautiful communicators with people with profound disabilities.

It was all about human connection and touch, and as part of my studies I also qualified as a Thai yoga massage therapist. Explain the differences between the classes you offer? My gentle yoga and mindfulness class is really for everyone; I have students with macular degeneration, auto-immune conditions, depression and all kinds of physical disabilities. They are young and older, men and women. What they have in common is the desire to move and a willingness to be open to the benefits of breathing and meditation. My Vinyasa classes are fun, fluid and dynamic. I challenge my students physically with strength and flexibility. There is a monthly playlist to this class and laughter appears frequently and is actively encouraged (it’s great for developing core strength!). If someone hasn’t done yoga before, what would you say to them? If you are reading this magazine you are blessed to live in an area with so many great teachers. There are lots of different styles and disciplines and for me it is about finding the right teacher for you. If you like the idea of moving, learning about the power and beauty of your own breath, gaining strength and most importantly feeling relaxed and having fun – come check out River Flow Yoga. It’s welcoming and warm. Anything you want our readers to know? One of my favourite pieces of feedback from someone attending my classes for a while was the fact that they found getting their socks on in the morning much easier! It’s the simple things that make me smile! It’s not about getting your foot behind your head or doing the splits.

20 years on – still going strong! July issue already!? I PRAY the weather has improved as my birthday is imminent! (57).That’s really got me thinking. (You do think more ahead as you get older, as there is less of it!) Since the last article for the Wye Local we’ve held the Embodied Yoga Principles (EYP) Workshop and it was a knockout success. One of the most satisfying events ever. Marketed for no more than 10 ladies – as it is intimate work. All women were perfect to be there. Utterly receptive, and a joy to work with, they ‘got it’ completely, and were not afraid to share (a lot of the best embodiment work comes from brief discussion in pairs (the debrief), as it cements what they’ve just done physically. (Briefly: it’s taking Yoga practice – the psychological aspect – ‘off the mat’ and into real life, serving you as you wish for any occasion you need it.) In fact, it’s not just Yoga, but Tai Chi and martial art influenced also. I’m getting so excited for the future with very clear ideas about where to head. As decades pass, we tend to look for different experiences, so I’m happily taking complimentary courses to offer my client

base the same. This means the Club now caters in a very holistic way, for every aspect of health, and this so suits many of us anyway! Personally, I am actually very relaxed about exercise (I stop completely, no problem at all, if on holiday, say, and have clients who EASILY do more than me!) But I love ‘a bit of friendly competition’ and metabolic stuff! So now as well as a fully equipped gym with really nice, unusual equipment, a great variety of classes, and a lot of iron, we’re also providing gentle workshops in EYP, beautiful discussion on life and health with The Bean and Banter (where weight and fat loss are the least important of our concerns), and, coming up in July, Nordic Walking to get us out of the studio and into the amazing countryside right on our doorstep. My mission is to get as many as possible into weights, protect our bones and bodies, minimise impact work and start to blend and fuse what is already at my disposal. Look out, lots to come! Michael the Flying Red Squirrel Help support and protect our precious native red squirrel! On Saturday 13th July, wildlife enthusiast Michael Cunningham will jump out of a plane to raise vital funds for the Wildlife Trust Photo by Paul Harry of South and West Wales’ Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project. The aim of the Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project is to protect and expand the unique population of red squirrels in the Tywi Forest, one of only three key populations left in Wales. Grey squirrels now outnumber red squirrels by more than 320 to 1. This is a crucial time to save this iconic species. The five year Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project has built a solid volunteer base and has raised the profile of the red squirrel in Mid Wales; volunteers have donated over 10,000 hours of their time to the project. Volunteer surveys have helped to build a more complete picture of where red squirrels are thriving and where they are not. This is a crucial time

to build on the good work already achieved by the project, but funding is coming to an end. We currently have very little information about how red squirrels survive in the forests of mid Wales. The more we can find out about how red squirrels use the forest habitat, the better we can inform habitat improvements and hopefully increase the red squirrel population. Michael’s target of £5,000 will fund the purchase of vital equipment such as trail cameras for red squirrel detection and pit-tags to enable the project team to identify individual squirrels and develop a better understanding of red squirrel behaviour. BBC presenter Iolo Williams has shown his support for this ‘Nutty Skydive’, and you can too. Donate at Michael’s JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/michael-cunningham19. Our native red squirrels could be gone within your lifetime – we need to act now. To find out more please visit: www. midwalesredsquirrels.org and www.welshwildlife.org.

Planting Dahlias in July will bring instant impact and warm, vibrant colour to your garden. Easy to grow and tolerant of a wide range of soil types, you don’t need to be a gardening expert to plant, grow and enjoy these plants in your garden year after year. Dahlias can become very tall, so be prepared to support them as they emerge and grow. Always make sure that the dahlias are kept well fed and watered, dosing with a high potash plant feed as soon as the flowers heads appear. To keep them flowering for as long as possible dead head as the flower petals fall and expose a pointed bud. Don’t confuse these with the rounded buds which are the new flowers! Dahlia tubers can be left to over-winter in well drained soils but to be certain of having them again for the following year tubers should be lifted after the first frost have blackened the top growth. Dry them off in a frost proof shed or greenhouse and then store them in dry compost until spring. In March or April they can be started into growth in pots and planted out after the last spring frost. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Three Cocks.

Wild in July

All share a distinctive “ruff ” of leaves from four in a cross (as in Crosswort) to many around the stem in the Cleavers or Goosegrass that clings to your clothing at the least brush of an arm. Hardly a surprise then that they were grouped into a family of their own – the Rubiaceae. The arrangement of leaves around the stem is called a “whorl” by botanists and the example shown here displays a whorl of eight or more leaves below the flowering stems. This is Hedge Bedstraw which can make a splendid display in hedges as this plant was in Cwm Senni. It isn’t the commonest of species in our area though, making it even more special to come across.

Galium album Hedge Bedstraw, Briwydd y clawdd The Bedstraws are distinctive and widely varying at the same time, from the Woodruff that delights us in springtime woodland to Lady’s Bedstraw lighting up limestone areas and Crosswort adorning many of our Brecknock lanes in high summer.

The family has specialised species for most habitats, such as marshy areas and limestone rocks so we encounter a Bedstraw most times we are out recording plant communities. Brecknock at The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales: www.bit.ly/breconwild John Crellin

King of the Zulus comes to Brecon It’s not every day that a real life Zulu king comes to Brecon, but over the last few years a close personal relationship has grown between Wales and the Zulu nation in Kwazulu Natal, resulting in a visit this July of Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. Two years ago, Brecon saw the visit of Queen Mantfombi with an impressive 100-strong Zulu entourage. 2019 is the 140th anniversary of the Anglo-Zulu wars, known for the Battle of Isandlwana and famously for Rorke’s Drift, and to coincide with the anniversary a series of events are planned. Not usually open to the public, The Army Barracks on The Watton plays host to a cultural and historical pageant to welcome King Goodwill on Sunday 21st July from 1pm. Winners of the King Goodwill Youth Art Competition will be presented to the king. The event is free and will feature performances by local choirs and bands and will climax with Beating The Retreat. On Monday 22nd July, Brecon Cathedral stages a Welsh Concert with Brecon Male Voice Choir, harpist Emily Harris and soloists Emily Pugh and Ben Anthony. The evening starts at 7.30pm and is compered by Sir Tim Ackroyd. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 23rd and 24th, see performances at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon of Jerry

Pooe’s Cetshwayo. The musical is based on the life of King Cetshwayo, and tells the story of the AngloZulu wars, his subsequent capture and his visit to London and meeting with Queen Victoria. To commemorate this historical Brecon visit, a map has been designed by a local artist to show the sites King Cetshwayo visited in 1882. In addition, a children’s book written by Janet Holcroft, about the life of King Cetshwayo is released and includes artwork by pupils from Llanfaes School, Mount Street School, Cradoc School and Christ College. The King Goodwill visit to Brecon has been organised by Dorcas Cresswell and the Friends of the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum and has been supported by the Armed Forces Covenant and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The King Goodwill Pageant at Brecon Barracks has the support of Colonel (retired) Mike Snook and the Army and is a free admission event. Tickets for the Welsh Concert at Brecon Cathedral and the Cetshwayo Musical at Theatr Brycheiniog are available from the theatre box office on 01874 611622. A great experience Wye Valley Falconry is the brainchild of Luke Mammatt, a falconer from Hereford who has worked at a number of centres around the UK over a 14 year career. Luke has now returned, and brought his passion back to Herefordshire by establishing his own business.Yet he has no visitor centre or even premises; rather, he offers private experiences and events, where clients get to meet and fly various birds of prey such as hawks, falcons and owls. A private one-to-one experience will help you understand why birds of prey are some of the most fascinating predators in the world; a flying display will show you their amazing aerial agility and natural hunting techniques; an educational visit to a club or organisation (covering any age-group – nurseries to residential homes) will teach you about their evolutionary features, characteristics and behaviours; or why not take photographs in full flight? Photographic experiences can challenge the best to capture a falcon as it sweeps by at nearly 100mph! Luke also offers wedding services – your wedding rings can be delivered down the aisle by a barn owl which adds something magical to your special day. Whatever you choose, you’ll be sure to have a great experience with Wye Valley Falconry.

Llyswen & Boughrood Show is 60

ND – TAL RA CURRY NIGHT

RTH GA

THE S T

This year commemorates 60 years of the Llyswen & Boughrood Show – an amazing achievement. It is organised completely by volunteers and has been funded mainly by sponsorship and support from the local communities throughout its 60 years. Work for the committee starts in the autumn and continues through the spring, culminating in a busy week before Show Day in August each year. Many local people have been involved over the years either as volunteers or as competitors and the show has gone from strength to strength, making it one of the most popular small shows in the area. Over the years many wonderful memories have been created on Show Day – at the Show’s Afternoon Teas event earlier this year, it was amazing to see so many people with lots of brilliant photographs and memories come to share their experiences of the past 60 years. Everything collected at the event will be displayed at this year’s Show – go along and see if you recognise some of the faces from past and present. The 60th Show, taking place on Saturday 17th

August, will be packed with things to do and see – competitions for sheep, cattle, ponies, dogs, cookery, craft, flowers, vegetables, photographs and for children, even vintage engines! Schedules are available locally or have a look on the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Llyswen-BoughroodShow-170682619618199/ or the website at www.llyswenandboughroodshow.org.uk. There are also the beekeepers, the axemen, a wheelwright and exotic animals who will all be demonstrating their respective skills. There will be sports for all ages, including the Tug of War, generation relay and ‘wife carrying’ race (marriage certificate not required!). This year, following the normal Show day, the celebrations will continue into the evening with entertainment in the marquee: everyone is invited to join in the party. Do go along and join this celebration of the Show’s 60th anniversary, it promises to be a day full of competitions, a lot of fun, plenty of laughter and an evening celebration to round off the day.

Hay Music’s 100th Concert Hay Music was established in 2011 by John Stark, who, having moved to the area, was disappointed by the lack of regular classical music concerts in Hay. Booth’s Bookshop was the venue for the very first concert in April 2011. Since then Hay Music has presented a huge range of chamber music and choral concerts in different venues plus Chamber Music Festivals featuring the Fitzwilliam Quartet. We have featured musicians ranging from those with established international careers, to the best of the younger generation of artists. In July Hay Music reaches real maturity when presenting its 100th concert. To celebrate this ‘centenary’ there will be two concerts, presenting ‘Old and New’ faces of ‘classical’ music. The first, on Saturday 13th July at 7pm in Hay Primary School, features one of the largest groups of musicians Hay Music has hosted – the London CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) Ensemble. The programme, conducted by Gregory Rose, will include a range of recently written works, in two of which children from the School will be playing some of the

Swimming Pool & Jacuzzi

parts, being tutored in the weeks prior to the concert. CoMA pieces are exciting, unusual, engaging and often great fun! On the following day, Sunday 14th July at 3pm in St Mary’s Church, Hay-on-Wye, our 100th concert features one of the world’s greatest baroque violinists, Rachel Podger, accompanied by the renowned harpsichordist, Kristian Bezuidenhout, playing music by JS Bach, CPE Bach and Handel. Rachel has been hugely supportive of Hay Music since its establishment, so it is wonderful to have her play in this milestone event. John Stark is finally handing over the baton and has asked me to take over the reins of Hay Music, supported by a wonderful group of people who make these concerts possible. Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains This year is going to be a little different – a one day only event on Saturday 24th August – starting early to allow visitors to see stalls, demonstrations, etc., from 9am. On the town square, the Brecon Town Band will be playing from 9.30am, with the grand opening at 10am by Invictus Games Champion Steve Sebburn. Brecon Town Band will continue to play on in the square, followed by Paul Hartley and Carl John, with fun, games and Punch & Judy. There will be fundraising events, historical memorabilia on display in the Church Hall, and the usual array of stalls, this year also in the basement of the Town Hall. The Dog Show will be held on Jacqui’s field – an event which gets more popular every year. Crafts, demonstrations and animals will return again to the market, along with the ever-popular sheep shearing. The Fire Station – a fantastic and important

part of the community – will be opening for the public to view. Bell Gardening Club will as usual be in the Pool Room behind the Bell Hotel, with their spectacular show of fruit and vegetables. There will be live music from the ‘Auntie Depressants’ (music for all generations) from midday in the Great House Barns, with refreshment stalls. The Annual Duck Race will this year take place at 4pm on the River Enig. Following the Duck Race, the action moves to King George’s football field, where children’s activities will be held all day, for children’s sports and disco. The festivities will continue into the evening with a live band taking over for everyone’s enjoyment. All events and timings are subject to change, as there are still a few weeks of planning and organising. Check the Facebook page /TalgarthFestival for updates nearer the time, for events in the week leading up to the Festival and on the day itself.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth At the time of writing, we are experiencing one of the wettest Junes on record, with some farmers getting behind schedule with their shearing but distinct relief on the faces of local gardeners and allotment holders. We are lucky not to have experienced the flash floods that some parts of Wales have suffered, but it serves to remind us of how fortunate we have been over recent years in attracting significant levels of funding from the European Union and Welsh Government for the Flood Alleviation Scheme, delivered in phases by Powys County Council. Our Talgarth in Bloom volunteers are amongst those who have welcomed the rain, as the parched conditions of earlier weeks meant a serious watering regime was necessary last month. It is heartening to see the results of their planting and nurturing work, on the banks of the Ennig and all around the town. Also remarkable is the range of local people and members of the business community, who have been inspired to help, by giving of their time or providing sponsorship in cash or kind. Rosie Williams, Gaynor Weavers and the team are to be congratulated on their sterling efforts. I will join many of you in rooting for them on Friday 12th July when the Wales in Bloom adjudication is due to take place. Staying with the theme of volunteering, it was my privilege recently to attend the PAVO Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards at the Pavilion in Llandrindod Wells, during National Volunteering Week. I was delighted to host the winners of the Group Award category, the South Powys Veterans, who were praised for their dedication in delivering the Woodland Walk in the grounds of Bronllys Hospital, as well as the At Ease Veterans’ Garden. It could not have been more appropriate for them to win this accolade on 6th June, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. We

remain indebted to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in war for subsequent generations, as well as those survivors, who carry with them the scars of conflict every single day. Last year’s PAVO Group Award Winner, the Hay, Brecon, Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R) Group continues to do invaluable work locally and in just a couple of weeks’ time, they will be returning to Talgarth for a favourite fixture in the summer calendar. In what will be a freestanding event this year, fresh from winning the Mid Wales (South) League Championship, Talgarth Town FC will be hosting a tournament at King George V playing field, on Saturday 13th July with refugees based in Swansea and Newport. Details are still being finalised at the time of going to press, but HBTS4R, with support from Talgarth and District Regeneration Group, are looking forward to greeting our visitors again this year, in a spirit of friendship and good sport. We can expect our area to be very much in the media spotlight in the coming month or so, with the advent of the Royal Welsh Show and other events. I’m sure that we will play our part in welcoming tourists and other visitors from near and far. As well as showing our community in a positive light, it also gives a genuine boost to our local economy, which is to be warmly welcomed. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112 113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook @WilliamPowellLD and Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 5th July from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. Best wishes, William

News from Hay Castle Trust

Minnie’s delicious homemade traditional and inventive homemade cakes, bakes and pastries Available to order for special events, cafés, B&Bs and much more. We use free range eggs and butter in our cakes with gluten free alternatives available.

For Aspiring Lords and Ladies On April Fools’ Day 1977, the good people of Hay came together to proclaim Independence, with Richard Booth as King. On the day of his coronation the King knighted two small boys who happened to be in the crowd watching the ceremony. This marked the beginning of what is now known as the Hay Peerage. Richard and Hope Booth have continued this tradition for over 40 years with peerages recorded in a huge gold-edged ledger. For a fee people could become, for example, a Knight of Hay or a Duchess of Dulas. New members of the peerage receive a certificate with their new title in hand written calligraphy, signed by Richard, stamped with the Hay Independence stamp and finished with a wax seal. This year King Richard made the decision to hand over the responsibility and honour of issuing peerages to Hay Castle. Hay Castle will continue the tradition with all the original papers, stamps and seals. New names will be added to the historic ledger, and all proceeds will help fund the restoration and maintenance of the castle. For information on peerages, visit haycastletrust.org.

News from Kirsty Williams Recently I’ve been trying to do my bit to raise awareness of the importance of claiming pension credit. This is a particularly important issue in our part of the world. 26.6% of people in Brecon and Radnorshire are 65 and over (it’s 19.9% across all of Wales). As well as providing income support, pension credit acts as a ‘passport’ to other benefits. It will take on added significance from June 2020, following the announcement that the TV licence for people over 75 will only be available to those receiving pension credit. However, around 40% of people aren’t claiming pension credit when they could. This is around 1.3 million across Great Britain and would likely mean well over 1,000 in Brecon and Radnorshire. I believe the Westminster Government should take steps to address the low uptake rates, but I also think there are things that can be done at a community level. If you’re not claiming pension credit when you could, or you know friends or family members who this may apply to, then please consider if there’s anything you can do to help ensure everyone’s getting the support they need. Hay Festival may have been and gone, but July sees another big occasion in the Brecon and Radnorshire calendar in the Royal Welsh Show. Last month I attended NFU Cymru’s inaugural ‘sustainable agriculture’ conference, and used my speech to highlight the need for a full recognition of the benefits agriculture brings to the environment. We are often quick to talk about our beautiful countryside – we should be equally quick to recognise who helps keep it that way. Finally, I want to take a second to congratulate Hayon-Wye School for their successful lottery funding bid, which was confirmed last month. The grant will lead to the installation of play equipment. Well done to all involved. As ever, if there is anything you’d like to discuss with me please get in touch at kirsty.williams@assembly.wales or on 01874 625 739. This article is bilingual due to the Official Languages Scheme of the National Assembly for Wales.

Yn ddiweddar rwyf wedi bod yn ceisio gwneud fy rhan i godi ymwybyddiaeth o bwysigrwydd hawlio credyd pensiwn. Mae hwn yn fater arbennig o bwysig yn ein rhan ni o’r byd. Mae 26.6% o bobl ym Mrycheiniog a Maesyfed yn 65 oed a throsodd (mae’n 19.9% ar draws Cymru gyfan). Yn ogystal â darparu cymorth incwm, mae credyd pensiwn yn gweithredu fel ‘pasbort’ i fudd-daliadau eraill. Bydd arwyddocâd ychwanegol i hynny o fis Mehefin 2020, yn dilyn y cyhoeddiad y bydd y drwydded deledu ond ar gael ar gyfer pobl dros 75 oed sy’n derbyn credyd pensiwn. Fodd bynnag, nid yw tua 40% o bobl yn hawlio credyd pensiwn pan allen nhw wneud hynny. Mae hynny’n tua 1.3 miliwn o bobl ledled Prydain a byddai hynny’n golygu y gallai ymhell dros 1000 o bobl ym Mrycheiniog a Maesyfed fod yn gymwys. Credaf y dylai Llywodraeth San Steffan gymryd camau i fynd i’r afael â’r cyfraddau isel hyn, ond credaf hefyd fod pethau y gellir eu gwneud ar lefel gymunedol. Os nad ydych yn hawlio credyd pensiwn pan allech chi, neu os ydych chi’n adnabod ffrindiau neu aelodau o’r teulu y gallai hyn fod yn berthnasol iddynt, yna ystyriwch a oes unrhyw beth y gallwch ei wneud i helpu i sicrhau bod pawb yn cael y cymorth sydd ei angen arnynt. Efallai fod Gŵyl y Gelli wedi pasio am flwyddyn arall, ond ym mis Gorffennaf mae achlysur mawr arall yng nghalendr Brycheiniog a Maesyfed, sef y Sioe Fawr. Fis diwethaf, fe wnes i fynychu cynhadledd gyntaf ‘amaethyddiaeth gynaliadwy’ NFU Cymru, a defnyddiais fy araith i amlygu’r angen am gydnabyddiaeth lawn o’r manteision y mae amaethyddiaeth yn eu cynnig i’r amgylchedd. Rydym yn aml yn barod i siarad am ein cefn gwlad prydferth - dylem fod yr un mor barod i gydnabod pwy sy’n helpu i’w gadw felly. Yn olaf, hoffwn fachu ar y cyfle i longyfarch Ysgol y Gelli Gandryll am eu cais llwyddiannus am arian loteri, a gadarnhawyd y mis diwethaf. Bydd y grant yn arwain at fedru gosod offer chwarae. Da iawn i bawb a gymerodd ran. Fel arfer, os oes unrhyw beth yr hoffech ei drafod gyda mi, cysylltwch â ni kirsty.williams@cynulliad.cymru neu ar 01874 625 739.

News from... News from Brecon to Hay Cycle Path The initial feasibility study in January gave positive feedback on the project. We have subsequently sent out an engagement survey on our Facebook group and by email. This gained 218 responses and gave us some encouraging and useful information. Firstly, 95% of respondents felt ‘very positive’ or ‘positive’ about the route. We asked people to rank a series of attributes that the route might have. The top five of these were: Safe, Accessible, Away from the road, Family-friendly and Hard Surface. Caring for Ecology, All-weather and Business Opportunities also scored highly. When asked which section of line people would like to see up and running, over three quarters voted for Glasbury to Hay-on-Wye. In second place was Brecon to Talyllyn with 15%. 97% of respondents felt that the route would be a draw to tourists and 95% felt that they would use the route, nearly half suggesting that they’d use it at least weekly. Cycling

and walking were the favoured modes of transport, but others included running, e-bikes, mobility scooters, adaptable vehicles and wheelchairs, scooters or roller-skates. We will be liaising with local councils, Powys Council and the national park as we enter the next phase in the project. News from Drover Cycles It was great to see the children at Hay School being so active during the recent ‘healthy week’. There has been a worrying increase in levels of childhood obesity and mental health issues in the UK in recent years. Physical activity is one of the best ways to tackle both problems and the NHS recommends that children should get plenty of exercise. Unless they are asleep, of course, under 5s should not be inactive for long periods and even toddlers should be getting three hours’ exercise every single day. Replacing car or bus travel with cycling can be a brilliant way to get your little one moving. Riding a bike is loads of fun for youngsters so it’s good for improving mood as well as getting them huffing and puffing! A child’s health and development is so important,

you’ll want to make sure you get a bike that is suitable and safe. Sadly many bikes marketed for children are heavy and hard to handle. At Drover Cycles we recommend choosing a reputable brand and having your child measured to ensure the right fit. A good bike is a great investment as it will retain its value and so you’ll save money in the long run. There’s a thriving second hand bike market locally as more and more parents realise the benefits of a great kids’ bike! So, if you’re interested in getting your little ones on two wheels, pop down to Drover Cycles. We’re open seven days a week and have both new and pre-loved bikes in stock. News from Fairtrade Hay Fairtrade Hay is inviting new members to join the group, which meets in the Blue Boar every other month and promotes our status as a Fairtrade Town. One of our goals is to survey the shops, cafés, B&Bs and self-catering properties in Hay that stock Fairtrade products. The current list includes Eighteen Rabbit, Hay Deli, Number 2, Flow, Charlotte’s of Hay, Rosa Azul and Other Worldz. Across the border, the

Co-Op stocks a wide range of Fairtrade products and regularly contributes Fairtrade wine and chocolate for our events. If you would like to help with the survey, look out for the date of the August meeting of Fairtrade Hay in the next issue of Wye Local. Our twin town of Timbuktu is still under threat from Islamist militants, but the crisis has slipped from the headlines. One way we can help is by supporting Jump4Timbuktu, and by buying the Tuareg jewellery and leatherwork sold in the Hay Makers Gallery. This Fairtrade operation has been in place for more than ten years, and now more than ever it is vital that we use our purchasing power to buy Fairtrade, in order to help those in Timbuktu, and in other developing countries. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our next club meeting will be at Llowes Court on Wednesday 17th July at the invitation of Susan Briggs. Many of you know the beautiful gardens. We will be having a cream tea afternoon, 2.30–4.30pm, and a raffle. As always, small items donated for prizes are always appreciated. We hope you will join us.

Mia has said: “One of the most helpful things about Gwernyfed sixth form is being kept up to date with external opportunities and information. I first heard about Cambridge residential placements being offered to Year 12 students through an email, where I found it was targeted specifically to state school students with consideration for other factors like household income. I decided to try my luck and apply, and was very excited to hear back a few weeks later that I had got a place – to which I owe a lot to the support from teachers, in both writing references and their encouragement. Over the course of the residential, I will be attending academic sessions, meeting with current students, receiving university advice as well as a quiz night and punting! It should be a fantastic few days, and I’m very grateful I was informed about such a great opportunity”.

News from Gwernyfed High School This year, Year 12 have taken full advantage of opportunities afforded to them as part of Gwernyfed’s successful sixth form. We are proud of all of our students but notable successes this year have been: Georgia Allen being selected to study by the Sutton Trust at a prestigious American university during this summer (Georgia is being interviewed by S4C about this); Mia Gardner being selected to attend a residential course at Cambridge University; Amy Argent being elected onto the Welsh Youth Parliament; Year 12 media studies students interviewing celebrities live on BBC Radio Wales; Lewis Ball being selected for the Lord EdmundDavies Legal Education Summer Scheme 2019 and Harvey Draper also organising work experience

It is lovely to see our team being appreciated by the community! Call us on 01497 821 616 or find us on Facebook. News from Haygarth Surgery New Telephone System Good news – Haygarth Doctors will be installing a new telephone system at both Hay and Talgarth Surgeries. We appreciate that patients have been having difficulty in accessing the practice by telephone as the line is often engaged. The new system will be equipped with an auto-attendant facility where patients will be able to choose from the different options available. The new system will enable us to manage the incoming calls to the practice much more efficiently; therefore, we will be able to answer your call in a timely manner. All calls will continue to be recorded for training and quality purposes. Installation of the new telephone system will take place during August and we hope that there will be minimal disruption to our patients. The installation dates will be advertised on our website and Facebook page. We are hoping that the improved telephone access to the practice will also help reduce the number of patients who ‘Do Not Attend’ for their appointment. There will be many patients who have failed to get through to the practice to cancel their appointment as the line is often busy. During May there were 144 missed appointments. If you are unable to attend please contact the surgery to cancel your appointment:

to our fund either directly to the TIRC or we have collection jars at Hay Vets, The Olde Papershop, Orion Motors, Castle Hotel, The Honey Café and the Co-op. A big thanks to all. If shops and businesses would like to take a collection jar please contact the Centre. We are a self-funding, non-profit making organisation and our funds are raised from sales in our shop and a limited amount of advertising. We are very excited about our plans and looking forward to (fingers crossed) unveiling the refitted Centre in late summer/early autumn. The Centre may be closed for a short period while the work is undertaken. Advance information will be given on closures. Contact details for the Centre are 01874 712 226, www.visittalgarth.co.uk, email info@visittalgarth. co.uk and via the Facebook page. We are open six days a week, Monday to Saturday. New volunteers are needed. New to the area or indeed already living in the area and want to meet new friends and contribute to the community? Well, contact us at the TIRC today. News from U3A Hay What do we know about the Italian writer, and warrior, Dante Alighieri? Why is his best known work The Divine Comedy still in print and selling today when it was written in the Middle Ages? At the next meeting of U3A Hay, on Tuesday 16th July at 10.30am, Canon Chris Pullin will detail the fascinating and varied life of this son of the city of Florence in his presentation ‘Dante!’. After lunch, our afternoon session will begin at 1.15pm when Mari Fforde, Heritage and Learning Officer of Hay Castle Trust, will present ‘Hay Castle: Past, Present and Future’ to bring us up to date with the plans and progress of the major restoration of our treasured local landmark. Come and learn what has been going on under the Castle’s wraps and what will soon be revealed! The meeting is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors. Please do come and join us in the Music Room at Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. We do hope that we see you there!
