Get to really know... Claire Gutteridge Claire Gutteridge looks after our lovely community in the Ludlow area for the Local Ludlow magazine.

of my favourite flavour left and I don’t want to share.

Place of birth: Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

Which bad habits drive you crazy: People who eat very noisily with their mouths open!

Marital status: Engaged to TV and Film action performer Wolfie Hughes. Occupation: Working for the Local Ludlow magazine. Children: One daughter Lucie, who is 13. Pets: 4 Horses, 3 dogs, 7 goldfish and a pond full of Koi carp! What was your favourite childhood programme: CHIPS. Many a happy teatime was had sat watching it! Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Not having a care in the world. Name one thing you love about being an adult: My mum can no longer make me eat liver and onions. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I think I would have to be a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are small but mighty and generally get to be pampered a lot. The idea of being carried around when I am tired also appeals to me! If you could have any superpower what would it be: The power to make my house tidy by clicking my fingers would be pretty amazing. What is your first thought when you wake up? I alternate between “COFFEE” and “I hate you alarm”. Most exciting thing you have ever won: I can honestly say it was a Cadburys crème egg for having the tidiest room on a school trip when I was 10. It doesn’t get more exciting than that! Are you a collector of anything: To-do lists. I seem to have hundreds of them. Two lessons life has taught: 1. Don’t plan how things are going to be in life. Generally life doesn’t go to plan. 2. No matter how hard your day is, try to find something to be grateful and happy about.

Do you believe in the afterlife: I definitely believe in the afterlife. I have had so many things happen relating to this, that it’s difficult not to. What book would you recommend to others: I love reading comedy so it would have to be The Tent, The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy. Best present ever received: I love my friend’s homemade perfumes and soaps made with beautifully rich essential oils. They’re a real treat. Favourite food or dish: I really do love food and the many flavours you can encounter by trying new dishes, so its hard to say I have one favourite food or dish. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would love to go see the Northern Lights in Iceland. Name one regret you have: Not travelling more when I was younger. Travel is so important. There are so many beautiful and intriguing places to visit. What’s your favourite song of all time: Tough question. I have a very eclectic taste in music and music has been a great companion to me, especially when growing up. I would have to say Cloud Busting by Kate Bush. Have you any hidden talents: I have been writing a book for the past two years. It’s a comedic book and based on real life events and observations. I found I could make people laugh with my writing, so a book seemed the natural thing to do next. List five goals on your lifes to do list: Pay off my mortgage, publish my book, finish renovating our house, travel more and practice more environmental sustainability at home.

What makes you grumpy: My alarm in the morning.

What have you done today to make you feel proud: Helping someone after a turn of bad luck. It doesn’t take much to be kind.

Have you any bad habits: I eat packets of crisps secretly at home. Mostly because usually there’s only one bag

Sum yourself in 5 words: Creative, chatty, powered by coffee.

Dads Legacy S.Rees Removals began 20yrs ago when my late father, Stephen Rees, decided to set up business on his own. Over the years he gained the trust of many of the local estate agents, solicitors and auction houses, doing everything from local and long distance removals, house clearances and auction house collections and deliveries. His plan was never to have a fleet of vehicles and numerous staff. He liked to meet every customer, and be hands on involved in every job, therefore ensuring the jobs went the way he had planned, and carried out with the utmost customer care.

S.Rees Removals & Clearances Est 20yrs... a name you can trust Looking for a reliable removal company? Or maybe you need the property clearing for new owners / tenants? Look no further! We offer a range of services to meet individual needs

I have worked alongside him for the last 6 years, which I have loved, and have got to learn so much. My whole family were devastated and shocked when suddenly he passed away on the 30th July 2017. I knew that he would have wanted me to carry on the family business, it was always the plan for the future, and so I did. Offering the same high standard service that he had prided himself on, and still working closely with all of the local professionals that he had built such good relations with. Myself and my staff, which are all family members, provide a friendly yet professional service. We can offer a full removal service, packing if required, over any distance. We can plan your move from start to finish if that’s what you require. We also do house clearances, offering advice on all areas involved in the process, and even offer a cleaning service leaving the property ready for estate agents or tenants. It is coming up to two years since we lost him and this business has been my focus. My customer reviews on Yell.com tell me that im managing to maintain his high standards, take a look for yourselves. Afterall, there is no better advertising than real customer reviews, and long may this continue. Article supplied by Corrine Rees

Stop the traffic for Ludlow 10

Ludlow will be closing its roads on Saturday 13th July to make way for the third annual Ludlow 10 event. The 10K course takes runners through quaint, medieval streets and past some of Ludlow’s finest landmarks for this special race that closes down the roads in the market town to create a unique experience for the area. The event is being organised by BeEndurance, who are the team behind the Storm the Castle duathlon, which takes place around Ludlow Castle in the Spring. Matt Green, who is one of the event organisers, comments on the Ludlow 10 event: “This race has a really unique feel. It starts at 7:15pm which means it is nice and cool for the runners, but it also means runners and spectators can keep the party atmosphere going with celebrations in to the evening, so everyone can come together for a great night out. “We wanted to create a running experience with

a difference. By closing the roads to unite the town, everyone can support the runners and take a moment to appreciate what a beautiful part of the world Ludlow is in. “The event is in its third year now, and we have been thrilled with the support we have received from runners and sponsors. There are still spaces available, so we urge everyone to visit our website to book yourself a place!” Estate Agent Samuel Wood will be sponsoring the ‘Fastest Local Athlete Award’ and accountants Thorne Widgery will be honouring the ‘Most Improved and Utterly Inspiring Athlete,’ with Breccon Carreg sponsoring the overall event. There will be medals and post-race massages for all runners at the finish line. The race starts at the Castle Square in Ludlow and spectators are encouraged to come and cheer on the runners. Visit ludlow10.com for more information.

Repair Café! Ludlow’s Repair Café runs every three months, alternating between the Ludlow Mascall Centre and Rockspring Community Centre. The underlying ethos for Repair Cafés is to move away from the ‘throw-away-society’ to attempting to repair items, extending their useful life so they are only consigned to land-fill when they absolutely have to be. In the past, when money had to stretch further, this repair ethos was prevalent and many of our volunteer repairers gained the experience and expertise and skills they bring to the Repair Cafés back then – but added to the practical element, there is also simply an enjoyment of fixing something! Supporting the team of ‘fixers’ is a vital ‘front of house’ admin team, too, who manage the reception process, greeting customers, booking in items brought for repair and, when necessary, organising a queuing system when items exceed available volunteer repairers – and all with a smile! The partnership between each of these teams underpins their enthusiasm and makes each of Ludlow’s Repair Cafés a pleasure to experience. Anyone can bring anything which is either broken or just not working like it used to – and the repairers will do their best to fix it. Repairs can’t be guaranteed so there is no charge but donations are requested to help cover event costs and keep the Repair Café going. Any surplus is passed to the Furniture Scheme. The next Café is on Saturday 27th July at the Ludlow Mascall Centre between 10am - 12.30pm.

Got something that’s not working properly or as it used to? Don’t throw it away – bring it to one of the Ludlow Repair Cafés We’ll fix it if we can!

Last Saturday of January & July (Ludlow Mascall Centre) Last Saturday of April & October (Rockspring Community Centre) 10.00am to 12.30pm

LUDLOW DRAIN SERVICES For all your drainage & sewage solutions

Ludlow Drain Services are a Specialist Drainage Company providing design, installation, repair and maintenance of all aspects of sewage – foul and storm drains across Shropshire, Powys and the West Midlands

The clock in the Buttercross, Ludlow.

• Drain Repairs and Maintenance

In January 1744 Ludlow Corporation ordered that William Baker of Audlum, a gentleman farmer, should build the Buttercross at the top of Broad Street. By March 1746 this work was complete and in October that year George Payne was paid £11 10s for making ‘ye clock over ye new cross’. George was a Ludlow clockmaker who, at that time, lived in the Bull Ring.

• Drain Cleaning and Unblocking

Once the new clock was installed, the hour of day could be checked by observing the dials that were fitted on the cupola over the Buttercross. However there was no audible indication of the time as the clock was not fitted with a strike mechanism. Each week George would have climbed to the top of the Buttercross to wind his clock. Yet it was not till 1748 that he was paid one guinea back pay for these labours. It was then agreed that he would be paid ten shillings and sixpence each year in the future for winding up, cleaning and keeping the clock in repair. It was clearly the intention of all parties that the clock would eventually be fitted with a strike mechanism, as George had left space for it in the frame of the movement. However, it was not till November 1774 that the Corporation paid him to make and fit ‘a striking part to the clock at the cross’. The clock struck on a bell that had been recycled from St. Leonard’s Chapel, Corve Street. Finally the people of Ludlow could, and still can, stand at the top of Broad Street and hear George Payne’s clock strike the hours! www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk www.ludlowhistory.co.uk

REVIEW

“An exciting fusion of ingredients” On one of the few dry days last month, we were invited along to see the newly refurbished Clive Arms to sample their food. It’s always nice to visit a freshly opened restaurant, to witness the excitement of both staff and diners. Beaming smiles from the staff on arrival, with instant approval on the decor from me. Bold choice of colours but not overpowering, whilst still retaining some character. We enjoyed our first drinks whilst perusing the menus. One being the menu that runs during lunch and evening, along with a lighter bites menu also running at lunch. The other being a specials menu. My partner James (and also taxi driver for the evening) was excited, as there was a lot to his taste. Both his dishes were chosen off the specials - crab and scallops ravioli as starter and beef fillet with sautéed foie gras for main. Indecisive me chose seasonal asparagus for my starter and butter roasted stone bass from the specials for my main. After our order was placed, it was nice to have a walk around. Bar area, restaurant, snug, private space for dining or meetings and a newly created space for outdoor dining. Spacious and open. Nice artwork was displayed on the walls in clusters of different styles and mediums. All in all, very sociable and relaxed. Our food was nearly ready so we were shown to our seats just to the right of the bar, two very comfy, padded benches with high backs. I can recommend these. I could have sat here in comfort for hours. Within a small time frame the Clive was getting full, with pre-booked dinners, guests staying in the on site accommodation and the odd walk in party. A nice relaxed, yet buzzing atmosphere.

James’s starter arrived. One giant ravioli parcel filled with crab and scallop, floating within a langoustine bisque, with spiced tomato fondue. At first James did question if the pasta itself was a tad on the undercooked side. Then came to the realisation that it was cooked to perfection. Cooking at home for the children, both of us often overcook our pasta to resemble a mush! The bisque was extremely flavoursome. We had a very happy James, along with a very happy me. My bed of super fresh, superbly cooked asparagus, drizzled with asparagus oil, with sauce vierge and onion ash, with a poached hen egg placed on top and ready to burst, was first rate. The combination of these ingredients and flavours made me wish I’d ordered two. Very rarely would you get the chance to order a fillet of beef with sautéed foie gras. Add in black truffle and James was in heaven. Served on a garlic brioche - very unusual James added and a drizzle of Madeira sauce. The foie gras was ridiculously soft. All the ingredients combined, all these strong tastes. James described the dish as very special and intense. At this point he didn’t even mind being the nominated driver for the evening! He was getting food drunk! My stone bass was served with crispy skin, a must in my eyes. It was placed on a chorizo and parsley cassoulet, with crispy capers on a bed of rainbow chard. The cassoulet had a slight kick to it with a slight smoky flavour and a soft texture, combined nicely with the crunchy stems of the chard. The fish was of fine quality, a firm white flesh. If I was to be picky and to order the dish again, I’d ask for no cracked salt on the skin of stone bass. I still enjoyed my main, but I do find cracked salt a little overpowering. Again this is because

Please mention the Local Ludlow Beacon when responding to adverts - 13 -

I’m used to cooking for our young family where salt is rationed! So not a criticism to the chef at all, just a note for others with a similar palate to me. Did we have room for dessert? Not really, but needs must. We couldn’t let our readers down on the final hurdle could we?! James had a slice of honey tart served with lavender and clotted cream. The tart was described as “sweet, soft and lovely” while said with a beaming smile. My red velvet micro sponge arrived with ruby chocolate pieces that the children would have pinched if dining with us. Good helpings of creamy ganache and buttercream sorbet. An exciting fusion of ingredients. The Clive Arms is part of the family businesses in Bromfield, which also include the Ludlow Farm Shop and sister eatery Ludlow Kitchen. All of the beef, pork and lamb come from their own farms and all free range poultry is sourced by friends 15 miles away. Oakly Park that surrounds the Clive Arms ensures their game requirements are met throughout the season. The Walled Garden supplies much of the seasonal herbs, fruit and vegetables. Situated just over half a mile away, maximum freshness and quality is

ensured. Anything else is sourced as locally as they can. These is music to our ears, as here at Cariads Local Ltd (umbrella to Local Ludlow), all our magazines ask local people to use what’s on their doorsteps and support the community in which they live. Our verdict: All the ingredients are of a very high standard. Each dish is all about the combination of the ingredients, with some really interesting ingredients giving each dish a wow factor of flavour and pushing boundaries. Menu prices are very fair, considering the quality - starters from £6, mains from £13 and a sirloin steak with the usual sides at £20. The main James chose off the specials menu (with foie gras) was £32. I asked him if he thought it was worth the extra £12 compared to the sirloin steak we saw pass our table on that evening. In his words “Definitely. I just hope it’s on the menu next time we come”. The presentation of every course would make other restaurants envious. The staff were very attentive, very smiley and happy. Thank you to all the team at The Clive Arms for making us feel extremely welcome, we’ll be back again very soon. Review written by Lisa Marie Badham

Land of Lost Content

Popular Culture began to be taken seriously back in the days of artists like Peter Blake, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and others of the Pop Art movement. That would be the around 50 to 60 years ago, but it is only very recently that the National Museums have begun to exhibit Pop Culture with anything like passion. The success of the David Bowie costume exhibition at theV&A spearheaded many other such shows featuring the Rolling Stones and the Mary Quant exhibition that it on now at the V&A. ‘Land of Lost Content’ in Craven Arms has just celebrated its’ 28th. Year, over the years, Stella Mitchell’s amazing collection of Popular Culture has been viewed by over a quarter of a million people.

The museum moved to Craven Arms 17 years ago, and from relative obscurity now comes top of local attractions on a popular online travel advisor site and draws interest from the BBC and galleries and museums around the country. ‘Land of Lost Content’ has loaned items for exhibitions in Wolverhampton, Hartlebury, Walsall, Emsworth, Chichester, Portsmouth, Woking and also

the Capitol. Stella has appeared on Television and Radio numerous times as an enthusiastic collector and expert. In 2011 items from her collection were loaned to the Festival of Britain 60th anniversary exhibition at the South Bank. Visitors to ‘Land of Lost Content’ (the name comes from the A. E. Housman poem ‘A Shropshire Lad’) speak gushingly of memories stirred by things they recognise from their own and their families’ lives. Children too love to see how their own cultural icons, the Teletubbies, Postman Pat or Shrek, fit into history. Over the past couple of years Stella has added new displays featuring clothing and items from the Swinging Sixties including items from Biba, Granny Takes a Trip, Mr. Freedom, Mary Quant etc. There are 37 major displays spread over the 4 floors of the Market Hall celebrating ordinary life through some of the most influential times through the 20th century and beyond. A great experience Wye Valley Falconry is the brainchild of Luke Mammatt, a falconer from Hereford who has worked at a number of centres around the UK over a 14 year career. Luke has now returned, and brought his passion back to Herefordshire by establishing his own business.Yet he has no visitor centre or even premises; rather, he offers private experiences and events, where clients get to meet and fly various birds of prey such as hawks, falcons and owls. A private one-to-one experience will help you understand why birds of prey are some of the most fascinating predators in the world; a flying display will show you their amazing aerial agility and natural hunting techniques; an educational visit to a club or organisation (covering any age-group - nurseries to residential homes) will teach you about their evolutionary features, characteristics and behaviours; or why not take photographs in full flight? Photographic experiences can challenge the best to capture a falcon as it sweeps by at nearly 100mph! Luke also offers wedding services – your wedding rings can be delivered down the aisle by a barn owl which adds something magical to your special day.Whatever you choose, you’ll be sure to have a great experience with Wye Valley Falconry.

Civil Partnerships vs. Marriage The number of same-sex civil partnerships has dropped dramatically since the law was changed to allow same-sex couples to get married in 2014 - but will the trend change when heterosexual couples are offered the ability to enter into a civil partnership? Anne Lewis, of the family law team at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, takes a look at the similarities and differences between civil partnerships and marriages. The most important similarity is that both provide legal recognition to a relationship between two people. In turn, both marriage and civil partnerships offer many of the same legal rights in respect of various areas of law, including financial remedy claims against one another in the event the relationship breaks down, parental responsibility, inheritance tax and intestacy rights.

of a married couple and a dissolution order being sought in respect of a civil partnership couple. Some countries do not recognise civil partnerships. Some associate marriage with patriarchy and a marriage can have religious connotations, whereas civil partnerships do not.

Both heterosexual and same sex couples may enter into a marriage in England, Wales and Scotland.

Those in a civil partnership can convert the same into a marriage whereas the same is not true vice versa.

The differences between a civil partnership and a marriage are not significant, but here are the main points:

What are the differences in respect of marriage entered into by a same sex couple as opposed to a heterosexual couple?

Currently only same sex couples can enter into a civil partnership, but this may change in the near future given the Supreme Court’s decision that it was against the human rights of heterosexual couples to be prevented from entering into civil partnerships. Civil partners cannot refer to themselves as ‘married’ and married couples cannot refer to themselves as ‘civil partners’. Civil partnerships are registered by the couple signing the civil partnership document as opposed to marriages where the couple exchange vows. Both parents are named on the civil partnership certificate whereas only fathers are named on the marriage certificate. In the event that the couple’s relationship breaks down and they seek legal recognition of the same, the legal terminology for the two differs with a decree absolute / divorce being sought in respect

Very little is the answer! The main two being that a same-sex couple cannot seek an annulment based on non-consummation; and a same sex couple cannot petition for divorce based on adultery, given the current legal definition of adultery being sexual relations between a man and a woman, one of whom is not party to the marriage. What if couples cohabit as opposed to marry or enter into a civil partnership? Common law husbands and wives acquiring rights through their cohabitation is a myth. Couples can formalise their financial arrangements by entering into a cohabitation agreement, but this does not offer the same rights and responsibilities as married couples or civil partners. Strength over size Here lies much gym mythology, misinformation and therefore misunderstanding. When I talk to most of my female clients about involving strength training as part of their personalised programme they are all concerned about becoming overly muscular / bulky and looking like an extra in an Arnold Scwharzenegger film. In reality and for a number of different reasons this never happens, but instead their muscles grow a little bit and take shape or ‘tone up’. So what is the difference between the two forms of resistance training? STRENGTH - Strength training is a workout programme that aims to improve your neuro muscular system in such a way that more muscle fibres are recruited at any one time, thereby increasing how much force the muscle can produce (you become stronger). SIZE (HYPERTROPHY) - Hypertrophy training is a workout programme designed to maximise muscle damage and growth. It is also referred to as training for size (you look stronger). AREN’TTHEYTHE SAMETHING? - Not really, beginners usually experience simultaneous improvement in both size and strength, but only up to a certain point. Bigger muscles don’t necessarily translate to proportionally greater strength and strongmen rarely look like body builders. Mo Farah, one of the UK’s greatest middle and long distance runners is surprisingly strong. He can perform squats with one and a half times his bodyweight on his back. For the average 12 stone man that is equivalent to putting 18 stone across your shoulders and squatting with it. At the other end of the spectrum, powerlifters tend to be stronger than bodybuilders despite having less muscle mass. BENEFITS OF STRENGTH TRAINING: 1. Become stronger and fitter 2. Protect bone health and muscle mass (reducing risk of osteoporosis and sarcopenia) 3. Help with weight loss: strength training increases your resting metabolism 4. Develop better body mechanics (proprioception): it benefits your balance, coordination and posture, reducing your risk of falling. 5. Help with chronic disease management: for example if you have arthritis strength training can be as effective as medication in decreasing arthritis pain.

6. Boosts energy levels and improves mood: strength training as with all exercise boosts mood because it increases endorphins, but can also help you sleep better. 7. Cardio vascular health benefits: musclestrengthening physical activity helps improve blood pressure. TRAINING FOR BOTH - When training for strength focus on using a heavier load (more weight) with fewer reps (less movements). As a guide I get clients to use weights that they can just about lift, with good form, between 3-8 times per set (between 3-5 sets with 2-3 minutes rest in between). Conversely, for hypertrophy you should be using lighter loads, but for more reps. So typically you will be looking to move a lighter weight between 8-15 times (3-5 sets with 1-2 minutes rest in between). As always there is a certain amount of crossover, but the above is a good basic guideline. Next month we will take a closer look at stretching and flexibility.
