“I wanted to advertise my new business in Ludlow. I spoke to Lisa Marie, who was very easy to talk to and kindly explained all I needed to know. She placed me in email contact with her colleague Nicole who assisted me with the design of my advert. With the experience from the team I found the whole process much easier than I had expected. I am thrilled about my advert and the finished look of the editorial. Thank you very much”

Q&A with: The Baron at Bucknell When did the Baron at Bucknell open its doors? The Baron has been a country inn since the 1980s when it was converted from derelict farm buildings. The current owners, Debra and Phil Wright, have had the business for over 12 years. Do you cater for different dietary requirements? As a family owned business the menu offers something for everyone – with some classic pub dishes and other dishes for a more adventurous palette. The menu includes gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Debra and the kitchen team are very experienced at catering for people with food allergies. What do you consider makes an outstanding chef? An outstanding chef is someone who can deliver consistently great food, day after day. Sourcing the best quality ingredients and creating fabulous tasting food, which also looks good. Simple food can still be outstanding! Tell us more about your current chef: Debra has run the kitchen with her small team for over 10 years now. She has a real passion for food and is very accommodating to customers’ specific needs and dietary requirements whenever possible. What is your favourite dish on the menu and why? All the food on the menu is delicious. Corbett’s of Shrewsbury steaks are the best you’ll ever have. We also do deliciously healthy vegetarian and vegan food and our traditional Sunday roasts from Andrew Francis of Ludlow are hard to beat. Your customer reviews are outstanding. What sets you apart from the rest? We really do care passionately about our business, and giving customers a fantastic experience. We are constantly looking at ways to improve what we do (even after 12 years). We believe that it’s our consistency and attention to detail which sets us apart from our competition. What do you feel makes your accommodation unique? Our bedrooms in the inn provide thoughtful, comfortable accommodation with a home away from home feel. One guest described it like having a hug, she immediately felt relaxed and at home. That’s the best compliment ever…

Our garden rooms provide a stunning location with added touches of luxury like a bean to cup coffee machine and wet room. But it’s the view from huge panoramic patio doors looking over rolling Shropshire hills which is hard to beat, especially when enjoyed from the hot tub on the deck with a glass of bubbly. We see your natural swimming pool is offered exclusively to Garden Room Guests - what feedback do you get? The garden rooms overlook a natural swimming pond, exclusively for guests in the garden rooms. Not everyone is brave enough to take the plunge but it is truly invigorating and a great way to wake up and get your metabolism going for the day ahead! Do you cater for events? We have two dining areas the restaurant with the original chase and runner and cider press dated 1770, and the conservatory, just off the lounge. Both areas offer stunning views of rolling Shropshire Hills. The conservatory can accommodate groups of up to 28 people and has direct access to the beer garden. We can also offer buffets or bespoke menus tailored to individual needs. Sum up The Baron in Bucknell in 4 words: Relaxed, Friendly, Unique, Luxury.

Q&A with: Ian Mackay

Ian Mackay: Electrician

Quick response, local and reliable No-obligation fixed quotes

Ian Mackay is an electrician who has recently moved to the Ludlow area with his wife and small baby. Here, he answers some questions about electrical work. What kinds of work do you do? Anything and everything, it’s the variety I love. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people work out the best solution for them, whether that’s by giving free advice; fixing a problem on the spot if it’s straightforward; or giving quick and clear quotes if more work is needed. Recently, I’ve done everything from installing downlights; to wiring a summer house; to installing security lights and electricity meters; to testing the circuits on a caravan park. Should I ask a qualified electrician to do electrical works for me? Absolutely! I know you would expect me to say that, but it’s really important - even if you or someone you know is really good with electrics, the chances are they don’t know the technical detail of all the regulations that need to be met in order for your electrics to be both safe and legal. Do I need to worry if I’ve had works done by someone I’m not sure is qualified? It might be worth getting a qualified electrician to do a safety inspection. They will be able to tell you if your electrical circuits are safe and, if they’re not, they will be able to advise on what needs to be done to sort them out. Is it a good idea to get my electrics tested? A surprising number of house fires are caused by faulty wiring. Even if you haven’t changed anything, cables can degrade over time, or mice can chew through them, for example. If you’re a landlord, it’s recommended that you get the wiring tested annually, or whenever a tenant changes. As a homeowner, it’s recommended that you get the wiring tested every ten years. Having an upto-date inspection certificate can be really helpful when selling your house, especially if you don’t have all the paperwork for any works you’ve had done.

me more time to devote to the campaign. As well as posting updates, petitions and developments on social media, we also looked for and promoted products that could help people reduce their plastic. Pretty soon, people were telling me that I should start selling these products myself. Plastic Free-UK was launched.

Do It For David Combating the issue of plastic pollution Wrapping our scarves tighter around our necks, we begin scanning the sand for bits of plastic and litter. Almost immediately we found an area where hundreds of plastic bottle tops had been washed up. It was a cold Christmas day, and our family had decided to walk the dogs at our local beach – Hells Mouth (Porth Neigwl) in North Wales. As always, we brought with us some bags to collect the plastic and debris that had been dropped by visitors or washed up with the tide. We felt heartbroken to see our beach littered with so much plastic, and an increasing frustration built inside of us as we realised the enormity of the issue, not just here, but around the world. There must be something more we could do. “What if everybody just picked up some plastic whilst on their daily walk, surely that would clear up a lot”. It was such a simple idea; but why would anybody listen to us? Then we thought about our own inspiration for looking after our environment – Sir David Attenborough. We had been watching David’s programmes on the BBC for years, but it was the revolutionary ‘Blue Planet II’ that really inspired us to take action against plastic pollution. We thought “Well, they might not do it for us, but they might do it for David!”. And thus, the ‘Do it for David’ campaign was born!

I began by stocking plastic free items such as: metal water bottles and lunch boxes, reusable straws, bamboo coffee cups, beeswax wraps and dental products, but I soon began to look for products that only use RSPO approved palm oil or were completely free from palm oil. I have found some amazing companies that hand make products in the UK such as soap, shampoo and conditioner bars, deodorant and skincare. I will not stock products that are tested on animals and I have a wide range of products that are vegan friendly. Within a couple of weeks of launching my site, friends and followers began to ask if I was going to sell my products at different events. I signed up to The Mother’s Day Market in Ludlow and I have to say that I had a lovely day. The other market traders were so friendly and helpful and I had some interesting and encouraging conversations with customers who were obviously very keen to do something to help our struggling environment. I also have a stall at Oswestry market once a month and I will be at The Shrewsbury Food & Drink Festival at the end of June. I will be back in Ludlow at The Food & Craft Market on 6th June. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response and have been greatly encouraged and inspired by the enthusiasm of our followers. We will not give up the fight and we look forward to some exciting new developments. Article supplied by Mandy Price

Since then we have been asking local businesses to reduce their plastic and asking consumers to “choose to refuse” plastic through our website and Facebook page, our visits to local schools and our two Plastic Awareness Days help in conjunction with Oswestry Town market. We have also organised a few litter picks. Following an extremely busy year, working full time as a teacher and promoting our Do it for David campaign, I had the opportunity to take early retirement. This gave

Uniquely and lovingly handcrafted gin!

Ludlow and the surrounding region is awash with multiple award-winning restaurants, bistros, pubs, delis and food producers; it will come as no surprise that it has become the spiritual home of Shropshire Hills Distillery, producers of Wardington’s Original Ludlow Gin. The company was launched in 2018 by Shaun Ward, well known for his work at St Laurence’s over the last 13 years, Shaun said: “It’s been an incredible 7 months, we’re so grateful for the support people have given us, we’ve lots planned for the next year and hopefully over the next few years we’ll find a permanent base which we can open to visitors.” “Having worked in Ludlow, I’d experienced first hand the amazing and passionate people that give the town its well deserved reputation for fine food. I love food and cooking, the idea of creating my own gin was just too good to refuse. I set about researching everything I could about the production of gin, the aim to launch at the Ludlow Food Festival 2018. Gin is all the rage, with 31 distilleries opening across the UK in 2018 alone. I’m often asked why it’s so popular. Well for me its two things, it’s quintessentially English as a drink, and secondly, people love the fact that it can be uniquely and lovingly hand-crafted.” So what makes Ludlow gin so special? As we discovered, it’s made in small batches in hand-made copper stills named Joy and Felicity, using only natural botanicals. Shaun’s passion is tangible: “I was certain that I wanted to create a premium gin, using only natural ingredients, no artificial sweeteners, flavours or colours. Distilling the gin myself means that I can control the process: Ludlow Gin is exceptionally smooth, of this I’m very proud. I originally set out to create the perfect martini gin, inspired by the classics like Plymouth, Palmer’s and Berry Brothers No.3. Wardington’s Original Ludlow Dry Gin has all the classic botanicals: juniper, coriander, orris, angelica, lemon, orange; a little cardamom, and a touch of gorse gathered which we forage from the surrounding countryside, it helps to give our gin a unique twist. Our gins are also certified gluten free and suitable for vegans. Even our labels are handcrafted by master printer David Lewis at Cherry Press on a 1950s Heidelberg press.”

Along the way Shaun created three contrasting gins: the heady and confident Triple Citrus and Pomegranate, the warming and complex Ludlow Spiced Gin with nine exotic ingredients, and finally the smooth and sophisticated Hibiscus, Orange and Pink Peppercorn. They are all made using the ‘London Dry’ method: using a quadruple distilled grain spirit, natural dried botanicals, predominately juniper, all distilled in a single shot process, nothing is added except for pure water to bring the distillate down to bottle strength. Traditional flavour profile gins have stood the test of time, they also provide the perfect base for cocktails, the juniper led notes singing through others flavours. So how best to enjoy your gin? “We really enjoy our gins served as a Martini by adding a quality white or red vermouth, shaken over ice; or better still, as a Negroni with additional bitters such as Campari or Suze; enjoy!” Article supplied by Ludow Gin

Final collaboration with conductor Thomas Payne

On Saturday 25th May, The Ludlow Orchestra will perform pieces by three great Russian composers, opening with Anatoly Liadov’s fascinating and mysterious tone poem Kikimora. Originating in Slavic folklore, Kikimora is a household spirit associated with nightmares and unexplained night time events. Pianist Daniel Browell joins the orchestra to perform Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on St Laurence’s beautiful new Steinway. Daniel gave his BBC Proms debut in 2008 and now works regularly with the BBC Philharmonic. He is currently Associate Head of Keyboard at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The orchestra is delighted at this opportunity to work with Daniel. After the interval, Dmitri Shostakovich’s passionate and powerful Fifth Symphony provides a real treat for both orchestra and audience. Thomas Payne conducts The Ludlow Orchestra for the last time after six memorable years together. Members of the orchestra bid Tom a fond farewell as he continues his work of ballet conductor with The Royal Ballet, on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House. Come along for this exciting programme and try out St Laurence’s new seats! Taking children abroad Families where parents are separated should ensure all necessary legal consents are in place before taking a child abroad - or risk being refused permission to leave the country. The warning comes amid heightened vigilance globally over fears of child trafficking and abduction and centres on Parental Responsibility (PR) where permission of all relevant parties must be obtained before a child can be taken out of the UK. Caroline Yorke, a family law solicitor who works in the Ludlow office of Lanyon Bowdler, said: “Immigration officials all over the world are now more aware of the problem of child abduction and trafficking. “Having the necessary written consent in place could prevent the hassle and heartache of an expensive holiday of a lifetime being delayed or cancelled at the airport. “When it comes to arranging summer holidays, in families where parents have separated, or someone other than a parent wishes to take the children away, it is absolutely vital to start planning a few simple steps to avoid stress and upset further down the line. “Most parents, married or not, share the legal concept known as Parental Responsibility. Certain court orders also give non-parents PR and no child can be removed from the UK without the express permission of every person with PR or the court. “Therefore, it is important to get that agreement in writing before booking any holiday overseas. “If it can’t be agreed then it would be necessary to apply for a court order granting permission for the child to be taken out of the country, which can take six to nine months, often longer. “Taking a child out of the country without the permission of all PR holders or the court is potentially a criminal offence and will have lasting legal and emotional effects for the whole family.” Caroline added: “Situations often arise where someone who is not the child’s parent wishes to take the child abroad, like the grandparents, but permission of all PR holders is still required. “I advise that the people taking the children away travel

with a document drawn up by a solicitor and signed by everyone concerned, stating that they understand the legal position and the necessary consent is given. “I always encourage separated parents to try to put aside their personal and financial issues and focus on the children, as they are the two most important people in the children’s lives – sometimes the only thing those two parents might have in common. “Even when they can co-parent openly and amicably it is important to ensure holiday plans are agreed at a sensible time in advance, to ensure everyone has booked the right dates off work and that older children with their own social lives know broadly where they will be. “A solicitor can advise on who has PR, negotiate and draw up agreements or assist with an application to court.” Caroline Yorke has a wealth of experience in family law and spends part of her working week operating out of Lanyon Bowdler’s Ludlow office. She is also a Resolution-accredited specialist.

SwS Antiques... Earlier this year I wrote about my experience of opening a new antiques business in Ludlow. Contrary to some people’s expectation, ‘fingers crossed’, the venture appears to be successful. Since then SwS Antiques has been extended and has now doubled in size. Since I first opened the shop, I have come to realise that: 1. My earlier observations about antiques being regarded as sustainable and the new ‘green’ particularly amongst young professionals, is borne out by my experience 2. I know less about what people like now than I did before - we are remarkably diverse in our likes, dislikes and enthusiasms 3. Antiques generally offer uniqueness. People are increasingly looking for difference, iconic and individual pieces whether furniture, art or artefact to express their own personalities or those of the recipient. 4. There appears to be an increasing momentum towards individual personal taste and away from trends, fashion and style

and his comment, “Dad, I don’t know why you don’t move to something smaller, you do realise than when you ‘go’ we’re just getting a big skip”. Fortunately, there are many others who do value such things, and that is how I source many of the items I sell. Article supplied by Peter L Marten SwS Antiques

5. In many cases a good quality antique will represent better value than new 6. Many of my clients share this view and recognise that antiques are more appropriate for period properties and individual gifts for someone special An interest in all things old is not universal of course, with many having no interest or regard for the past or even their own history. Whilst such attitudes may change with time, I think of various events in my own experience - family treasures passing from one generation to the next. When the next generation do not share the same affection, disappointment can follow. As an illustration, I recall an apparently reluctant prospective purchaser, for a property I was showing, admitting that he was solely motivated by a recent, perhaps thoughtless, remark of his son. He lived in a house which was his home and that of his father and grandfather before, and he had hoped that one of his four children would want to follow on in due course. Until that is, the fateful visit of his eldest son

The Heraldic Arms of the Corporation of Ludlow On Hosyer’s Almshouses facing east towards the west end of St Laurence’s church, there is a fine depiction of the heraldic arms of Ludlow in painted stone. These Almshouses were founded by John Hosyer, a rich merchant and member of the Palmer’s Guild. John Hosyer died in 1463 and in 1483 his executors gave the Almshouses to the Guild. In 1548 the Almshouses, like all the former property of the Palmer’s guild, were taken over by the Town Corporation on the Dissolution of the guilds in 1552. This is why the town arms are so prominent. The Almshouses were built by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard of Shrewsbury in 1758-9. The arms show a white lion lying (couchant heraldically) between three white roses, two above and one beneath the lion, all set against a blue background and surmounted by three gold-painted feathers (for the Prince of Wales). The lion, with shaggy mane and curved tail, fiercely bares his red teeth. The white lion is a Yorkist device. Here it represents the white lion of March. In 1328 Roger Mortimer of Wigmore was created Earl of March, his title deriving from the Marcher lordships spread across south Wales and the borderland between England and Wales, the area now known as the Marches. The white roses have white petals and white barbs. The white rose is another Yorkist device, and incorporated into the arms since the York family were lords of Ludlow. Richard, Duke of York, granted Ludlow a charter in 1449 and his son Edward (King Edward IV) another in 1461. Roses of different colours had been royal badges since the thirteenth century and white roses had been part of the Yorkist imagery from at least the early fifteenth century. www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk www.ludlowhistory.co.uk

Updating your CV In last month’s feature titled ‘what do you want’ we talked about the need to identify what you want to achieve before you can begin your fitness journey effectively so, in this month’s issue we are looking at your CV. I don’t mean your curriculum vitae but rather your cardio vascular fitness. To update or improve your cardio vascular fitness we must first understand the cardio vascular system.

CARDIO VASCULAR SYSTEM: So what is your cardio vascular system? Essentially it is the closed loop system of the heart and vessels within us all that are used for transporting blood to and from the tissues. It supplies the tissues with nutrients and oxygen as well as removing carbon dioxide and waste. Think of it as the central heating system in your house. The boiler (pump) can be likened to your heart and the pipework represent your blood vessels. INTERESTING FACT NO.1: If you could stretch out all of an adult human’s blood vessels, they would be about 60,000 miles long, enough to go round the world twice or 1/3 of the way to the moon! CARDIO RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: If you include your windpipe (trachea) and lungs in the cardio vascular system it is known as your cardio respiratory system. Together they allow the introduction of oxygen to and subsequent removal of carbon dioxide from the blood. INTERESTING FACT NO.2: The total surface area of an average adult’s lungs is about the same as a tennis court. SO HOW DO WE IMPROVE OUR CV FITNESS? Unsurprisingly the best way to improve it is through cardio vascular exercise, also known as aerobic exercise or simply ‘cardio’. Aerobic exercise uses oxygen to produce energy (aerobic respiration), unlike anaerobic exercise, which we shall cover next month. BENEFITS:There are a number of valuable health benefits associated with cardio vascular exercise such as lowering blood pressure, burning calories, improving your mood, lowering your resting heart rate and improving your stamina. In essence your cardio vascular system becomes more efficient and your heart gets stronger. In technical terms this helps us improve our VO2 max or the ability of our body to take in, transport and utilise oxygen.

Aerobic exercise can also potentially reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. “BRILLIANT BUT HOW DO I TRAIN AEROBICALLY?” I hear you ask. Well, energy for aerobic activity is produced slowly but in great supply and this mirrors how we should train our aerobic system: slowly but for longer periods of time (as a general rule we want to avoid training our anaerobic systems). Aerobic respiration powers activities in which your muscles are used in continuous rhythmic or repetitive movements, moderately increasing your heart rate and breathing while building your physical endurance. So get on your bike, go for a fast walk, moderate jog, swim or whatever you enjoy but try to maintain an effort where you can hold a fairly comfortable conversation. Next month we will take a closer look at anaerobic training. Article supplied by Andy Silvey - Andali Fitness

Shrewsbury Food Festival to serve up a new offering The Shrewsbury Food Festival will return on the 29th and 30th June for its seventh year, with 200 exhibitors, a bigger, better BBQ area, demonstrations, chef school, live music and lots of fun activities for kids.

We hope this means everyone will feel catered for, and that it pushes the experiences of everyone to try foods that have been produced in new and exciting ways, to meet the growing demand for free from products. “The food festival evolves every year and we hope everyone joins us for a fantastic weekend of food and fun this June.”

A new addition to the festival this year will be a ‘free from’ area, reflecting the food industry’s recent proliferation in that market. One in eight Britons are now vegan or vegetarian so it is fitting that the festival will be devoting an area to the movement.

There will be something for the whole family, with a dedicated kid’s zone, under 5’s play area, craft activities and sports. Children will be encouraged to engage with the journey of food and learn about our wonderful, local food producers along the way.

Shropshire Festivals founder, Beth Heath, comments, “Shrewsbury Food Festival is a day for everyone - young or old, foodie or just fond of food - and now for the first time ever, we are introducing a dedicated free from area.

Shrewsbury Food Festival will be held at Shrewsbury Quarry and around the town centre. Tickets are selling fast - purchase yours now at: www.shrewsburyfoodfestival.co.uk/tickets
